So android and mac don't play well together. Apple doesn't allow mtp to work on mac and google have not updated their android file transfer app in ages and it's extremely buggy. What apps and methods you guys use to make your life easier? I have been using an app called handshaker, it's a decent app but still not as simple and solid as plugging your phone on windows.
Install windows using boot camp. Problem solved. Best of both worlds then.

I dont want to install windows as i have a macbook air with 128 gb ssd and dont want to waste 30 gigs on windows since i dont really need windows at all.
the main problem is neither apple nor google is concerned with this matter which kind of sucks. i know there's probably a very less number of people using androids and macs together but i'd still love to see some solid solution.
Yea! I've been living with this problem too! Handshaker is nice. But transfer speeds are damn slow.
Well after 20 years of using Macintosh and about 5 of using android, the only way to get things working properly to install windows. Either using boot camp or parallel desktop emulator. Those are the only two fool proof solutions sadly, like it or not.
I agree, android transfer is completely crap for Mac. Having to disconnect and reconnect all the time in order to get one out of three times it works.
It used to work fine on Sony Z1 using 5.1 but marshmallow seems to be the issue to me.

This is sad. I gave up my Mac 2 years ago after trying to get a replacement screen for a 2010 Mac book pro and they told me $400. Bought a touchscreen Dell on sale for same price, windows 10 free upgrade, better processor and RAM, SSD, etc... Apple has always made a sleek looking, good product, but their lack of support without shelling or a ton of cash is why i left their desktop/laptop products. Android is why I left their phone products. They will probably never make anything to work with an Android device unless you pay them. Strictly apples to apples (pun intended).
I do hope you find a solution, cause I was thinking about replacing my wife's I Mac with a newer one, but if I can't use it ever, I'm going to find another win 10 machine.

I just use "File Manager" from cheetah mobile, downloaded from play store. Turn on wifi transfer, type the IP it shows you into your browser or ftp client, transfer files at 10-100x the speed of mtp.
Of course, both devices need to be on the same wifi, which isnt a problem in most cases.
Im sure some other file managers out there have the same function.

yes exactly i too had a 2010 macbook pro and motherboard died. apple customer service asked to pay 36k inr ($500) usd to get the motherboard replaced. he told me apple doesnt allow them to repair motherboards and they have to replace them. i ended up getting a macbook air but even i've decided when my current mac dies i'll switch over to windows.

That is outrageous! And the unibody design was so easy to work on, seriously, 9 screws and you could do anything your self. The price I was quoted was for just the screen, the installation I was going to do myself. Unfortunately, at the time I was looking, there really weren't better prices floating around. I was finally lucky enough to find a decent priced screen just this year, resurrected my MBP and daughter is using for school.
One day people are finally going to realize everything they (apple) make is from China, costs them nothing to manufacture, then they markup like 400%. People complaining about the EPI-pen lady, but she just took a look at a business model and decided to copy it... I'm personally very happy to give my money to a company like one plus where they obviously markup the price, but just don't rip you off straight out the gate, and then make you pay out the nose if something goes wrong.
Haven't had a single issue with my old OnePlus one, which is also under the control of my daughter, and my three is phenomenal as well. Samsung is also another company I'll never give money to in the phone department. My brand new note 3 bezel broke after I put it in one of the "authorized" cases they had. Asked them to fix, and they tried to charge me a ton of money. But the Samsung TVs, wow, no one can compare, so they've got me hooked there.
After writing all this I guess I'm just becoming some sort of hippie or something. Just tired of the greedy companies taking advantage...

To each their own. Ive never had a single problem transferring files this way. On the other hand Ive had problems with plugging it in an using mtp, either with drivers or just how ridiculously slow it is.
The wifi method, theres no drivers involved, is about as fast as you can get regarding transfer speed, and I dont even have to get off my chair to find a cable.

Good Afternoon,
My contract was up for renewal couple of days ago and I had my sights on getting and HD2 but my provider discontinued it and wont let me have it any more. They only WinMo phone they had was the HD Mini which I don't like so I have been forced over to Google Android.
Now while I have seen Google Andoid and do like the UI and what I have seen of it I am a VB.NET Programmer and make custom apps for my mobile that I rely on So I am a bit stuck when I get my new phone.
Has anyone has any sucess with gettin WinMo 6.1 onto the Desire, I know spec wise it can easily handle it (alot better then my current HD1) as ultimately thats what I think I want to do...
Regards,
Max
I doubt you will ever see windows on the desire.
It's like buying a state of the art tv and changing the settings to black and white and watching a movie from a video cassette player through a scart lead with a pair of headphones on.
lol not quite the same is it!
I was just wondering because in the last couple of years I have seen Google Android installed on many WinMo phones sucessfully so thought it must be possible the other way round.
Its not because I am a huge MS fan (ok I probably am) but mainly for being able to put my apps on the device. I run my own company and have my own customised tools like job timing and invoice generation all from my mobile (communicating with my backend sql server) and returning an invoice (which I then print out with my in car printer )
Try looking at this thread.
It gets asked almost weekly, and is getting exceedingly irritating for many because if you'd searched for "Windows Mobile", you'd have found it, and others like it, yourself!
My suggestion to you is that if you want a WinMo phone, sell or trade your Desire for an HD2.
Regards,
Dave
Sorry for asking such a frequent question. I normally do make use of search...
I suppose its going to be impossible to get a .net program working on android as well because if that was possible i would be happy lol

I believe there has been some work done on getting Mono (the *nix port of .Net) running on Android - Google seems to kind of agree (I searched)
John
You'd need to get someone to completely rewrite the boot system, and even then you wouldn't get all the hardware working, nevermind the fact that there's a completely different cache/memory structure.
Well, Novell will supposedly support Mono on Android at some point this year, which may at least get you partially there (see here)
Regards,
Dave

Was looking about £300 ono - phone is like new and I'd buy a new oem pouch for it too as the original one is a bit stretched
None of the accessories have been opened as I've had HTC phones before so not needed to use them. Only thing that wouldn't be with it is the CoPilot trial as I formatted the SD card so the mapping isn't there...whether you can download the maps from somewhere I don't know
Yeh I was looking at Mono before I read all of these posts. I don't quite fully understand how it works etc I am purley a Windows Engineer so never really touched Linux and the likes.
So with Mono can you still develop .net apps in Visual Studio and then run them using this 'Mono' and if it is that simple are there limitations. I need to do some more reading up on this and learn some more. Still got about 8 Days until T-Mobile deliver my Desire then got 7 days to send it back if I don't like it (which I am sure I will as I do like Android it was just the fact that my custom built software that was the issue)
I would take you up on that offer if I had the money
£300 is quite far out of my price range so sadly I won't be able to buy it off you. If I can have patients I can buy and HD2 fully working at some point during the next 14 months but prob nearer the end of that time and I can't wait that long lol.
Sending you PM. Im interested.

Yeh thanks for the offer if I had the money I would deff take it up or even shop around for one but got to rely on my contract and T-mobile for my phones :-(
At least they let me negotiate contracts with them. They normally give in to what I want. Probably the fact I have been a loyal customer with them for 7 years and brought quite a few customers to them

I don't know any professional programmers that would only know one language and not be able to migrate within a few days/weeks. Let WinMo 6 die, finally.
I am not a 'Professional' programmer still 'upcoming' programmer. VB.NET and ASP.NET are the two languages (although asp use vb.net) I know and still learning. I only recently (~3 years) started to fiddle with programming and all self taught my main job is Network Admin at the company I am employeed at which I am just developing them a mobile app but also registered as a sole trader and I have a couple of really useful apps that I programmed to help me run my business (like when I am out on jobs)
At the moment I have nowhere near enough time to learn another language.
I know this is very random and probably doesn't belong any where around these parts but since I own an evo what the hell. Well I own a windows vista machine its not the most powerful one out there but it served its purpose over the past few years. I'm Im downloading the sdk and I'm looking to get into writting apps for android and taking java/c+ dev classes to help me on my feet. I currently know a great deal about designing i.e photoshop, dreamweaver/css, html and a **** hair about flash/air. I want to make android games as my ultimate goal. So my question to you guys is, what kind of laptops are you devs or general users owning out there? My budget is is 1000 and I'm sure some mac fan boys will say apple but they are way to overpriced it seems as I never owned one so maybe I don't know what the hype is about. I do all my business from a very powerful windows 7 desktop. Like I said I'm just looking for some laptop recommendations from my fellow xda members under 1000 as I plan to kick start my app career with my evo. Thankx

Laptops are practically disposable. I'd say get the best you can for $500 and get a new one in two years with the other $500.
Apple laptops are not overpriced at all if you compare SIMILAR specs... Now i won't comment on the mac pro...
I compared it to a similar size and speced lenovo and there prices were the same..
Programing really isn't that intense... what else do you plan to do on it?
If your desktop will be your main... no need to spend a lot of money on a laptop.

Well I plan to do alot of this on the go as I'm attending college for these course so I need my laptop to be pretty darn strong. As I will be using most of the ish on my desktop(entire adobe suite cs5, maybe a game or 2 but mainly for designing and programming but on the laptop. Adobe products are pretty demanding when it comes to graphics and a good processors. I looked at the MacBook pro and its pretty beast I must say but is it really worth the 1400 just for the 13"? I saw some way stronger laptops with i7 processors alot cheaper. Now my laptop will be my main computer because I wont be packing my desktop around campus lol.

hah yeah... i have the 15". There customer service is the best.( Look at the surveys ) But the biggest advantage of the mac is the weight, and battery life. (i love my 8 hours of web browsing while in class )
I use mine for photography mostly, and some gaming. If you were to buy a macbook por i would wait a month or two... they should be uping that line soon (the 13 inch should be more in line with what others offer)

You could get a pretty powerful Asus with an i7 for that much. I would steer clear of Tiger Direct because most of their stuff is refurbs. They do have some nice deals on lappy's though. Check out Newegg too. They are very good customer service wise and if anything goes wrong during your purchase they are quick to fix it. You are going to get a much better deal online than in your big box stores like Best Buy.

Im gonna have to vote for ASUS also. They have a good range to fit performance or battery life or both. Got an Asus UL50V about 8 months ago, and it gets great battery life (which is what i was going for, about 8-12 hours). It also has a dual video card setup where i can switch on the fly between an integrated card for battery life, or a nvidia for better performance. On top of that, they gave me 1 year free accidental damage coverage.
But, if you are only going to be using it for programming then remember that it's basically word processing until you get to compiling. So unless you are developing massive projects, you won't need anything over the top.
Well, thats my opinion

i would say you can get alot more computer for your money if you went pc. i own a macbook from 2007 and i have not had a single complaint about it other than the fact that it was pricey. also you can always install windows on a mac and it runs windows pretty damn good. oh and one other thing haven't had any malware or virus problems.

You're probably right man, my biggest concern is a laptop with a dedicated graphics card at least 512mb preferably 1gb. Most these PC's I see have on the fly dedicated graphics so you can lower it and save battery if you don't need all the performance and switch on onboard graphics.

My Macbook has been nothing but great for college no slow starts, its there when you require it, will not freeze or let you down when you most need it. Theres less malware viruses ect for it so you feel a little more secure. Apple support is a plus this guys will fix any problem you have within warranty and aslong as you did not brake anything on purpose. Besides you can install virtual machine and run windows 8, xp, vista ect its like you have two computers in one.

Or you could build a hackintosh for home. Sandybridge has made building and using one with lion a piece of cake. Under 300 bucks for a nice mac mini performance machine. It's funny how people won't admit to owning any apple products in these threads for fear of being pounced on. At least this section seems better than most.

I work in IT and use them all the time. Actually fixing one right now. And from an IT stand point Macs are no good for buis. And you can run multiple OS's on any PC. That is not a Mac thing they just advertise it because they know you will need windows for something
Once you go MAC you don't go back to "PC"
been in IT since 1982.. been on MAC at my home office for 4 years now. I have 6 laptops of my own and 4 MACS also. 2 mbp, 1 macro, and 1 new while unibody for daughter at college.. I have serviced all pc's from Southern Cali to Washington DC. I have yet to fully need to break down a mac any place ... only hard drives if that. When I repair PC'S laptops at Colleges its always a windows' machine. The reason I switched over was the virus issues with PCs and the constant WTF i need to update today before I start working on my PC. Sure they both have trojans and mail ware. But PC's have viruses and MAC's do not. Meaning PC's can be made inoperable by malicious software a lot more often were as MAC will be used as pons in a greater hacking plan with implanted trojans.... but still operate. Many times without the user ever knowing. Last reason .. economics... take a look at the income scale of MAC user's .. usually a lot higher than your typical PC user. By no means am I saying PC users don't make more money than MAC users.. just are usually in my field experience in a more lucrative high paying career position than a trade "job". Granted you defiantly have infinite more options of software and best of breed hardware options building PC's. If you want to do what you want how you want .. build your own PC box. If you want to power up and get to work on the reason you power'd up every time you power up with out having to restart our machine after using it for extended periods of time opening and closing apps.. going in and out of hibernation/sleep mode for days on end..... MAC is the way to go. .................... on last note.. the pc are great .. mac's are great... the internet is bases off UNIX not DOS. MAC is based off UNIX. If dos went away.. PC would rule hands down. truly its not the hardware man.. its the software that's the issue. I for all OS's merging closely into one within the next 20 years... each upgrade of windows it becomes more MAC. its just how it goes. even Ubuntu with its unity desktop is following suite as well. out of all the computers in my home only one 2 year old Sony has Windows 7 Ultimate on it to flash my GPS and Pimped out Epizzal 4G's Touch.. LOL.. everything else Runs on OS-X and UBUNTU... .. http://forum.xda-developers.com/images/icons/icon6.gif
Did you guys know that in a few years windoze will be releasing Microsux X ... I had to contribute!
Switched in 2010 and haven't looked back since. 2010 MBP upgraded to 8Gb of RAM and a 256Gb Crucial SSD, its been plenty fast, and loaded Win7 on it, but recently pulled that off and put XP on instead.
I was so impressed with it when my PC bit the dust I replaced it with a 27" iMac.
Lol just do Hackintosh. I have one and it beats the crap out of my friend's mac. Go for SB-E and then buy an IB-E cpu.

same here... neVAAAAA going back to PC........ have the same 15 MBP did the same upgrade...also insalled Lion.. it just plain flies............
tried to bog it down by 1. dowloading 25 gigs torrent 2. burn 8.5 dvd 3. streaming music 4. streaming hd video 5 running AI to edit newspaper add 6. surfen web news sites 7. 3 machines RDP 8. backing up data to NAS 9. apple checking for updates.. ALL AT SAME TIME. AND THE MACHINE JUST KEEP SAYING "BRING IT!! BRING IT!" no lag what so ever!.
Sorry PC's.. since I'm not a big PC gamer.... My switch has been a long time coming.. I wish they would start the IM A MAC / PC commercials again too funny.. but all of them true. LMAO.:highfive:
No it's not true because you're comparing computers with intel processors that are far superior to all its predecessors. I can do the exact things you stated with my Core i7-920 machine with no hiccups as well because the jump from Core 2 duo/quad to first gen i7s was 20% increase in performance on average. 2nd generation and 3rd generation are 10-20% better than the first gen nehelams (depending on task).
It does not matter if it's a PC or a Mac. You'll be hard pressed to make any modern CPU from Intel or AMD choke in any way unless you're doing the most demanding of tasks where intel completely dominates.
An updated windows 7 machine from a QUALITY manufacturer (not the cheap hp/dell stuff in retail stores) will last as long as any MBP. There is a reason the commercials stopped. It just didn't work anymore against the improvements in Win 7.
Also i live in the state capital of CA and have family with seniority positions within the gov't and let me tell you. Even though literally everyone has an Ipad...
Out of the thousands of computers, I did not ever encounter mac's in huge quantities. Only windows or custom OS's.
Side note #1 - MBP's use SSD's which allow for insanely fast response times.
#2 - They do get viruses / malware and are usually the fastest to be hacked in any hacking competition due to extensive security vulnerabilities that they take forever to patch which is also one of the main reasons the PCvMac commercials stopped when MS got its act together.

been in IT since 1982.. been on MAC at my home office for 4 years now. Mac desktops are PCs... You know a personal computer. Just like Dells, HPs, Sony and the like. OSX is pretty but I'm not paying an arm and leg for a name brand. It's like Air Jordan sneakers. Every year its the same hing different colour higher price. Sometimes add some need giltz and glam.

Just bought both an MBA 13" 2012 edition and the Asus Zenbook UX31A. It's my first time using a Mac and I've been a pro-PC person all my life, but I can honestly say that the Air is better than the UX31A, which is the top Ultrabook out right now. The specs are pretty identical, but this is a lot more intuitive and they are basically the same price.
But since this thread is about Android phones, I'll say that I usually just run Parallels to Windows 7 for my Android stuff because I CBA figuring out how Heimdall works instead of Odin haha. Otherwise, I think it's basically the same. Macs are pretty good with automatically finding drivers.

I couldn't resist this deal but reading the reviews now was it really a good buy?

It was a hell of a deal, much better than most of us who have them got it for. You're asking us to tell you, after the fact, if it was wise? That's between you, your use cases, and your money. You should always know what you're buying, whather it costs $2 or $200...
With that said, if your use cases are anything close to what the tablet is good at, yeah, that's a hell of a steal.
Primarily movies and streaming media like tv shows and stuff.

Quite good for that, though you might want to get a microSD card if you want to store movies locally. Those will use up the internal storage quickly.
Yeah, this is a good price. Probably a student or teaching staff that's flogging it though.

Yeah but I never store movies seeing them once is enough lol. Plus you can find everything online these days so.

Indeed a very good deal. at that price the surface is the best tablet For me, I bought it because I moved to another country and didn't had a PC at that time. So for that it's a very good deal as you have a tablet and a pc at the same time/ I wanted to be able to use my USB device but also be able to browse my network drives connect via ssh to my apple tv,...

Plus you can get USB hard drives quite cheaply now, especially with the money you have saved on the surface in the first place. Stick movies on there for long term storage.
You will probably want the microSD anyway though, 32gb on a windows machine is very little. You can use 64gb microSD's in it I think, or just use 32 or less I guess.

I too couldn't resist. Mine arrived yesterday. While it has "REFURBISHED" stickers, both the unit and keyboard look brand new. The only minor sign of prior use is with the power supply.
I've been running RT 8.1 on my Dell XPS 10, so I knew what I was in for as far as the OS is concerned. In other words, I am very happy it jumped.

Buying what?
You might want to be more detailed for those of us reading on tapatalk...
I bought mine in the uk last weekend for £319 with touch cover, I knew exactly what I was buying, as I hate the ipad and have grown to detest android, even after having and hacking a dell streak, Motorola droid etc. I also used ios for years with jailbreak and in the week I have had the surface I have to say am very happy. if I had bought at $199 I would be singing from the roof tops as that's a steal. it is a tablet that divides opinion, because the world, cant see how not having to sync to the bloody terrible iTunes is a good thing. tonight I have rearranged the music on the usb stick, I use in my lexus, written a couple of lengthy emails with attachments, reviewed a couple hotels, and created half a power point presentation all from my tablet.
I can honestly say that the only thing I am missing from ios and android is bad piggies and I am pretty sure that Google and apple fanboys would say that's cause there app stores are better, they maybe but they make up or stale hardware.

At one point Rovio mentioned that Bad Piggies would release on windows 8, and the unity game engine does support both windows 8 and RT, no idea what happened to that.
Just picked one of these up and I gotta say it's one of the best things I've gotten for the android phone. Able to keep it with me and all my backups and such right in my pocket and not cluttering up my phone
.

That is nice! Might have to grab me one. My 32 gig in the phone is just not cutting it anymore.

Sweet!
interesting device. I'm not not sold on the transferring file thing. Yes, it's true, but a USB cable does the same thing, LOL.
I do think it's a nice way to be able to store files that one may use on both devices a bit more easily, especially for those that don't like hooking up their phones to a PC (this would not be this crowd overall).
Wish that Samsung being the world leaders in memory production and distribution they are would be paving the way of much higher memory. You think they would.
I think even dual memory chips would be awesome. Nokia did it like 6 years ago even.

At first I thought 'I don't need this', then that turned into 'hey, I should get one of those things' so I ordered a 32gb one on Amazon for about $20 including shipping.

If your like me and can't stand having all your backups on your phone/sd card taking up alot of space. Then this is a good device to have as you can still have your backups or whatever you like with you at all times. For me there's been a time or two where my Rom was working just fine but after a few hours out of the house my phone would lock up and keep doing it. And my backups were at home. With this device that no longer is a problem.
Oh yeah. This is something I'll be picking up.
