[REQ] Devs to make our evos a fully functioning computer.

Well guys we all know how amazing these phones are with our devs apps, tweaks, roms, kernels, etc. People who dont have an evo simply cant understand how amazing these things are! Now with that said a little more work and i think that we can start the way in the next step of technology. As im sure most of us know there is a way to have bluetooth input options (keyboard and mouse) and we have the nifty HDMI out plug built into our phone. HOWEVER we have yet to find a way to have the entire screen able to be shown on a tv. If we can get our screen in its entirety to be transferred to your favorite xx inch HDTV, bluetooth mouse and keyboard, and the hdmi cord do we not have a computer? (maybe a computer for 2000-2002 but a computer none the less)
Is there anyone behind this idea? Any devs that can or want to assist? Im shocked at the lack of development on this compared to all the other areas we have improved our phones!

No, but it would seriously kick ass to be able to connect to the 800x600 7" touchscreen monitor in my truck and use it for a car pc (beside the win7 box I built for it). Google Navigation is way cooler than any windows app unless you need trip agenda's or other fancy stuff.
There's a guy who did a mymobiler type app but it requires the android sdk to be installed etc. Supposedly mymobiler is making an android version but again that would require windows to be preseting (along with the requisite computer). It would be cool to be able to connect directly to a monitor.

I really want this too!! I would be more than willing to pay for this or donate to who ever can make this happen. I used this feature a lot on my TP2 and assumed my Evo would also be able to do it. The fact that I wanted to do this, and the Evo has an HDMI output was a HUGE selling point for me. I was very dissapointed to find out that it did not do this out of the box. I assumed that a developer would have this solved in no time though, so it wasnt as big of a deal. Now, here we are months later and still unable to do this it is a big let-down.
I dont want it for using my phone as a computer, I can connect my 17" laptop to my 52" Sony LED if I want to do that. I just want to be able to hook up my phone for watching movies and for gaming and showing other things to a group of people who can not all gather around the Evo's screen to see it. I know we can watch movies through the gallery, but I dont like being limited....and not being limited is what I love about Android. Also, watching movies through Gallery has always been a but buggy for me, not sure why.
Anyway, I know this is a long post. BUT, this is on the top of my list as for things that I want to do on my Evo next. I am happy with my current ROM, Kernal, current apps, games, etc.. Evo Laptop Dock

Have you seen the Atrix laptop dock? I can't post a link. So, go to Engadget, search for Atrix, and watch the video they posted today.
Would you be interested in such a thing for your Evo?
I wonder if it's even possible. Beyond the technical details, Motorola might have a patent on the idea.

I got laughed at until I had someone make a quick CG video of what could be done with my dock. After that it was "when, where, how much". The Motorola dock is just the tip of the iceberg of my intended design.

I really like where this is going... Any laptop shell that will compete with Moto should have the host phone act as the trackpad/mouse in front, not back... HDMI in needs to be a tablet feature as well! NC2 i'm looking at you!!

I would would have bought this thing the same day I bought my Eva. Pls HTC, make something incredible.

That is the SAME exact thing I was thinking when I saw the Atrix, it's so awkward on the back and would be AMAZING as a multi-touch mousepad...
I also wonder if Motorola has a patent over this, I tried doing some research and I think a different company holds the patent to this kind of technology, even though the patent terms were very broad.
I really hope not, I am looking forward to see how competitors create similar accessories.
I would love to also see a tablet shell... because realistically I will never need both my phone and a tablet.

I can't imagine the Atrix webtop thing ever taking off. If you're gonna bring something the size of a laptop around with you that costs 500 bucks, you might as well buy and actual laptop that costs 500 bucks. The only thing that's cool is their desktop cradle thing, but again, desktops can be had for so cheap that do FAR more than moto's webtop does. It'll never catch on.

Maybe a mod using the Cr-48 notebook its about the same size we need a Dev to Hack it and maybe get it to Mirror the Phone then if we have someone make a custom cradle to attach to it. IMO

Everything is more expensive than it should at the beginning of a trend. Eventually, prices do go down and become affordable. This new concept is no different. I think that within the next 6 months these webtops will be as affordable as netbooks.

I thought the Atrix price point was a bit wishful as well...

That price point makes things very unpractical. I have an ipad 1 now. Got it for $200 bucks from a buddy because he just NEEDED to get the ipad2 so I am perfectly happy in the tablet department. Rooted evo with tether makes it easy to get files to my jailbroken ipad

yea.. honestly that atrix lapdock is expensive for what it does. and with the evo still not having full hdmi out on the device out of the box, i don't see it happening. and the ports on our phones would make it hard to make a lapdock in a good size as our fone would have to sit straight up if it were on the back, if it were up front, it would have to mount on the side or something and wouldn't be able to use the screen as a mouse pad.
seems like it would be cool. but i don't think it'll ever happen til the next evo after the 3d.

A laptop dock will NEVER make sense. Just get a netbook or laptop, which you probably already have.
What might make sense is a "desktop mode" that switches on as soon as you connect it to a stand alone monitor. No dock needed. They just want to make a few extra bucks by selling you a dock.

I'm thinking about getting the asus eee pad transformer when it hit the U.S,.

I must disagree here. I would love to have access to all my music, documents, programs, etc. at all times. I realize that you basically cam on your phone but sometimes it gets annoying having to type with my thumbs, or show pics/movies to my friends at 3.5 size.

Another reason to be glad you got the One X...

The MHL port on the HTC One X is a real MHL port.
Now, you probably didn't think you had to worry about such a thing, but owners of the Galaxy SIII have discovered that it has a fake MHL port.
There's more about this here, but the main take away is that you should avoid Samsung branded MHL accessories as some of them won't work with the real MHL.

Now, now. The SGS3's MHL port is fine and works as advertised. People are pissed that in order to use it they need to buy a new MHL adapter that's required on the SGS3 and all newer Samsung devices because they changed the design. People that have the HTC D100 MediaLink that no longer works on the One series feel the same way.
And speaking of "ports," until we get USB To Go working, people in glass houses shouldn't throw stones.

It was advertised as having an MHL port. There have been 100 different MHL products, shipping 50 million units in 2011 alone, and every one of them is compatible with the HTC One X.
Like all of them, the SGSIII is advertised as supporting MHL, but is compatible with none of them. You consider that to be working as advertised?
And what makes you think that Sammie will use the same connector on future products. They have never said that, and given that they don't feel confined by any requirement for compatibility, they are now free to use a new connector on every successive generation.
As for HTC's proprietary MediaLink, that's bad too, but HTC communicated very clearly with their users so there was no misunderstanding or false advertising.

And probably used by less than 5-10% of smartphone owners. I want my team to win as badly as you do but this really isn't that big a deal. And within a couple of weeks you'll be able to find new Chinese MHL adapters that work with the new pin out for $5. You also skipped over our lack of USB To Go which impacts just as big an audience. No phone's perfect and will please everyone equally. Samsung will sell just as many gazillion SGS3's with or without this "expose."

This has nothing to do with 'team'. I'm not even clear what you think my team is (I don't have an HTC One X).
I guess if I had a team it would be consumers and standards.
A vendor releasing a product that still has bugs (if that is the problem with your USB on-the-go) is pretty ordinary. A vendor under-cutting a standard and intentionally tricking their users the way that Samsung has is rather new.
If you think this is no big deal then you must roll over at anything. And if that is people's reaction when a vendor pulls a move like this then I guess they can get away with pretty much anything.
I also don't think it is the XDA way to say that others should just roll over and stop whining. That's the Apple (iSheep) way, not the XDA way.

Since this is a One X forum and your crusade is consumerism in general, you really don't belong here. There are plenty of real and far more significant issues we're having with HTC regarding warranties and quality and timing of repairs than to take on a crusade we have no investment in. This thread will be closed soon anyway.

But what's wrong with my promoting a consumer issue? I have no personal financial or professional interest in this - I'm putting an effort into this because I believe in standards. Is that really the sort of thing that deserves to be shut down?
As for why I put a message in the general forum for the One X it is because a One X owner could well purchase a Samsung MHL adapter thinking that it would work with their phone and it might not (depending on which one they get).
I know that you have more important issues, but every post doesn't have to pass a 'most important issue' test, particularly in the general forum.

I don’t see this as such a big issue. Because in most cases you need to buy a MHL adaptor anyway, so why not get the Samsung official accessory for $30 and be done with it? After all, $30 is not a huge amount when talking about a $700 phone; and its not something most people would want anyway. MHL is a wired connection, so even for those extremely few people who actually have a MHL capable device, adding a small dongle and connecting over HDMI is not going to add any bulk anyway. The only instance I would see this as a problem is if companies start to come up with small portable tablet extensions like the Padfone utilizing the MHL standard. But so far there are no such devices, and if it really becomes a hit, I’m pretty sure Samsung will release another simpler cable adaptor to support the standard MHL interface.
All in all, like BarryH_GEG said , there are far more pressing issues with One X compared to S3 than a small non conformity of a relativity new/unpopular standard (for which there is a working solution = buy the samsung adapter). When I was considering which to buy even though I knew about the MHL issue, I couldn't care less ; not because I don't use it (in fact I do have a generic MHL adapter for my One X), its because it was really not an issue worth considering.

So the feature works as intended? Great, then we don't need a thread for it...

[Q] Is there a way to get music apps (Spotify, Songza) to output through USB?

I just switched from iPhone to Note II and I'm pretty pissed I can't just plug into my cars USB port and have it play through the speakers anymore...
I have a 2012 Honda FIt that has a built in USB port and it worked fine with iPhone. When I plug in the Note II, I get a "Unsupported" message on the car stereo. Anyone have a workaround for getting apps to play through the microUSB properly?

Zing!.... But seriously though, I wouldn't mind and answer to this as well. Building a custom dash in my car and it would be hella convenient to just build in a little cradle to set my n2 in for my music. My head unit has the usb, but just pluging things together doesn't do it... Maybe a "dock mode" or something that is missing?
Edit... Why would anyone EVER suggest a product that has basically 1.5 stars? It's obviously crap.

No I read it. I just didn't take the time to post the whole thing from my phone. There doesn't appear to anything that will help you immediately to achieve what you want at this time other than using the cable I showed you or if you have Bluetooth use that or you can get a Bluetooth to FM transmitter. All things that will get the music to your radio.
after taking 5 minutes with a quick google search I turned up that until 4.+ android there was no way to do this. However, I don't think Samsung implemented it with the note 2 since I couldn't find anything about it. I did however turn up the items I mentioned.
It looks like if that is what you want and you aren't willing to invest in the way Android works Android isn't for you and you should probably return the device and get an iPhone again. The USB drive you mentioned probably uses the Apple protocol and USB mass storage protocol neither of which the note can perform. If you have a 3.5mm connector that would allow you to connect it as well. My wife's vehicle had this as an input option that I quickly changed to a Bluetooth connection with a simple like item from Amazon.
Android's Bluetooth protocol is amazing after ice cream sandwich, auto connecting to my vehicle's stereo everytime I start my truck and with Tasker/Automateit one can even have it auto launch your music apps. with the awesome battery life of this device, which the iPhone can't touch, I don't even bother to plug it in and just leave it in my pocket jump in and bam Pandora starts playing. When I turn off my truck it stops on it's own and I go about my day.
now that is not to say I am not incorrect and there is another solution that would get you going the way you want. However there are a lot of people on XDA way smarter at these phones than I am and none of them have Chimed in yet so that isn't a good sign because generally the really knowledgeable people waste no time Answering questions.
The 30 pin connector from your previous iOS devices have way more abilities than the 4 to 5 pin micro USB port does. Which is great but limits people to the Apple Ecosystem, which is great for Apple's pocket book. Not so great for a person wishing to move to another device. This is why I always tell people if you are invested in Apple just stick with them and if android then stick with android. Nothing funnier than an idiot *****ing because their Apps don't work anymore after changing from one to the other.

I am sorry I couldn't help you. perhaps being appreciative of my attempt would get someone else to help you rather than being rude about it. I was attempting to educate you that you didn't buy an iOS device and shouldn't expect it to act like one. Good luck now I will be surprise if anyone else even bothers with you with that attitude. You're the one that bought a phone before bothering to research it and assumed it would work like an iOS device. The phone works exactly like it SHOULD it doesn't however work exactly like you THINK it should. That is not a failure of the device.

I was being nice and it was the only thing that I found that would possibly do what he was asking. Seriously what is with all the hate for someone just trying to help out. Why wouldn't you put Bluetooth into something that you are building that is that path that Android has taken not the path of cables.

Dude, seriously, read what you just said. You were attempting to educate me that I didn't buy an iOS device; thank you Captain Obvious. I know what phone I have and that is why I posted in the Sprint Samsung Galaxy Note II forum.
I don't want it to "work like an iPhone". It's ridiculous for you to say that I'm crazy for thinking that my $700 (if purchased unlocked) smartphone SHOULD be able to output audio via the USB port like other smartphones (other Android and iPhones work fine in my car), thus using the DAC directly instead of having to use the lower quality 3.5mm headphone jack or Bluetooth A2DP.
Anyways, to anyone who wants to be helpful, I've found that the issue has something to do with the fact that Samsung seems to have changed the way that the Note II and S3 operate the USB port. Anyone have any ideas for restoring the previous functionality of the port? Thanks!

he was exactly correct....the protocol has not been implemented.
there is no way to know it will be.
give it time or go back to the iphone seems to be the only applicable responses...so pick one.
I too went wireless back in 2008 so can't be of much more help than that.
Everything I listen to works over my head unit via bt.

ok now wait...are you looking for dac ...hell thats been a samsung issue across multiple devices for a while...though i thought I read it was fixed now. it was an issue on the orig note..the skyrocket.. variants of the s2 seems like one or two more as well.

Otg let's your phone host usb devices. It's not what you're looking for.
There's a mod that lets you mount your sd card in msc mode...but it won't let you listen to streaming services.
I believe there's a kernel in the dev forum that enables usb audio. This would not likely interface with your car's usb port. What you need is a usb to 3.5mm splitter
It's just like plugging in via the audio port get this way you only need to plug one cable to you phone.

So you have had android devices that could play pandora, spotify and the like via USB? Ive never had a device personally capable of dping that. My wifes head unit can play Pandora but i think that might be Bluetooth only, it its definitely only Pandora though. I was able to mount as mass storage in the Android 2.3 days, but even with the USB audio in 4+ i doubt if any current market product has the capabilities to control the music like it does the iPhone. I'm sure iPhone uses proprietary software in your stereo to deccoe the audio stream and unfortunately Android is lacking in any manufacturers supporting it.

There are some aftermarket stereos that interface with android.
There is no magic cable that will make your stock stereo work with your Note's Pandora.
I'd like to know exactly what differences you notice between a 3.5mm cord and bypassing the DAC while using your stock audio system.

I would prefer to use the usb plug because I don't have to adjust my headphone output every time I plug it in and because I only need one cable to charge and listen to music. I have read that a lot of car stereos use the "iPod Out" feature of the iPhone and this is why it won't interface properly with Android devices. It's too bad someone hasn't been able to make an app/hack that would emulate this function and intercept the audio out from an Android phone. I can't believe that I'm the only one who is interested in using the usb plug built into their cars for the purpose of charging and listening to music from their smartphones... I guess it's time to spend the money on replacing my factory stereo with an aftermarket head unit with bluetooth.

I just fm transmit my music. I'm not sure of the bitrate difference between bt and a fm signal but it's useable. Then I can use my car charger.

Honestly I just got an iPod for music. Had the same problem and couldn't find a solution. I use spotify so I just download my tracks offline and play them through the iPod. Its also good to have something relatively cheap (its a 2nd gen) to use while working out, who wants to have this huge phone on them while working out. Its great for a lot of things but that iPod out is great considering I can change tracks using the steering wheel. For everything else I have my note 2.

[Q] Link Multiple Nexus 7's Car Install

So I am about to start my install in a 08 Chrysler Aspen. I have everything I need to swap the stock radio for a Nexus 7, I have been messing around with all the software and hardware for a week or so and think that most issues are worked out. I am running CM12 nightlies just because I am a bleeding edge type of guy and I like Cyangoenmod's implementation of extra features. They run on the ElementalX Kernel so that OTG charging and deep sleep are possible. Now the fun part that I have not seen anyone else do, that I can find anyway. I have two outdated, barely working, please replace me 7" no name linked DVD players in the headrests. Honestly, the market for those is utterly pitiful and overpriced, full of hardware that is practically obsolete, and runs on proprietary software. No thank you. Luckily I have two Nexus 7's, soon to be three.
I am software engineering student, so I have skills in that department, and I dabble in all things electronic. I can usually find a way to make anything work. So far on first thought I have successfully set up Nexus2 to wake from deep sleep when power connects, then via Tasker open Allcast Receiver. Which I can then cast media from Nexus1 to be viewed on Nexus2, then to Nexus3 via Koush's Mirror Beta. The great thing about Allcast and Allcast Receiver is that only a WiFi connection is needed, no need to have internet access. This setup works better than I expected, with very minimal lag on the Mirror( I tested this using my Gs3 as the third device). Ultimately I would like to pass video through hardware instead of software. Herein lies my question. I can accept a video stream, but I have been unable to find any examples of sending media to essentially a second monitor through hardware alone. I am sure there is a way through SSH, similar to this, but I would like 2 and 3 to be able to be used independently as I am going to make them easily removable. For example if my kids want to play a game , they can just take it out and it is back to normal tablet form.
If there is nothing available, the casting/mirroring route will suffice for the time being. I would just like something a little less vulnerable. Casting/Mirroring are relatively new and there are occasional crashes. Anyone who has young children knows that patience is not a word in their vocabulary. Plug and play, no crashes is my optimal goal.
Sorry for the essay, I hope that someone can help. I will post pictures of the install process here, and I'll start a new thread for a complete DIY.
One more thing, has anyone seen headrests made specifically to mount a Nexus 7? I can modify my current ones, but a prefabbed like this for iPad mini would be ideal.
