I have heard a few people mention that their replacement phones don't suffer from the same hinge problem - that HTC might actually be fixing this issue in production and newly produced phones won't have loose hinges...anyone have any thoughts?
On a side note... I played with my phone yesterday when i got it, and despite the hinge (mines loose too), i was able to type upside down (and any other which way) because of the way my hands grip the phone - they keep the hinge in place, i bet many other users will be the same way.

FWIW: I'm on the side of "that's the way it's supposed-to/designed-to be". So it won't be "fixed" since there's nothing broken.
BUT: It's irrelevant if it's supposed to be that way or not -- all that matters is if the user likes it that way.
So: I tried the floor/display unit in a T-Mo store, deployed the keyboard and held the phone as I might if typing while reclining/in-bed, with the plane of the phone vertical and then tilted slightly beyond vertical towards me...and the screen flopped down/closed.
I held the phone the same way I hold my current TP2 when typing on the keyboard: with my index fingers wrapped behind the keyboard, not touching the screen. So...for me it seems like it would be a bit of a problem...or at least a downside. For someone who doesn't hold the phone like I do -- someone who supports the screen with their fingers -- it probably wouldn't be an issue.
YMMV.
Issue or not -- I doubt that future batches will change...until/unless they change the design.

The problem is, there is two clear distinct hinge conditions in the market now, as evidence in Youtube vids. One condition is loose hinge, where by holding it upside down by the lower half will cause the upper half to swing down, and the other condition is that its tight and will not swing down. This leads me to believe that the problem is more in manufacturing because if its design, it should exhibit only one condition all the time.
The phone is not supposed to flop down like that. I checked one out at the store, held it horizontal and it didn't budge.
My replacement doesn't budge when held upside down with the keyboard out.. it does do it when i have my gel case on but stays in place when the case is off.

I hope you guys are right, 'cause this "issue" is actually making me drag my feet about buying it...and this is the only new phone on the horizon that meets my needs (high-end with hardware keyboard on T-Mobile USA that's not WP7).
The only reason I'm not convinced yet (even though I'd like to believe) is that several people have posted that their hinge started out "firm" and then got looser.
In any case, it will be early-November before I buy so I bet that the "truth" -- whatever it is -- will be evident by then.
mine was tight when I got it, and magically later that same day, became extremely loose with no precursor
I don't think anyone can really say with certainty how the hinge is supposed to work. It does seem to be a prevalent "issue". I got a replacement phone (for an issue unrelated to the hinge), the replacement also has a loose hinge just like my first one. And as some people reported, even some units in T-Mobile stores have loose hinges.
I personally like G1's hinge much better. Wish G2 had the same type of hinge

I hated the G1 hinge, and personally like the design of the hinge over then more common slide, but we will have to see its longevity, right now the hinge issue isn't a major concern, the screen doesn't open crocked or have excessive play from side to side when opened, just opens to easily which I can live with
I have my second G2 and in my case both of the phones were loose to start. The one I received 2 days ago has loosened even more in spite of the fact that I hardly ever deploy the keyboard. While in a restaurant last night I had the G2 lying on the table and I reached over to pick it up and the keyboard just slid out. Which is way too loose for me. I am requesting a replacement because of this and also very poor or defective radio. This is a very good phone and I dont want to give up on it but only time will tell.
I've had my G2 since the release date and my hinge is strong. It doesn't flop down on its own. Even when I'm lying down the screen stays up on its own. Some are loose and others aren't.

why did you hate the G1 hinge? I've had G1 since it was first launched. It was (is still) sturdy.
My hinge is a little loose, if I hold it by the keyboard and give it a light shake it the screen drops about 3/16 of an inch. Now when the screen is open it will never close. I use the keyboard a lot and it doesn't seem to affect how loose it is.

I can do all the stuff you did in ur video and my hinge is loose. You were being very gentle with it. One shake and you know what would have happened lol.
That being said the hinge doesn't effect usage AT ALL. I'm also getting faster on this keyboard... at first I hated it because the G1 KB is better imo. ALso the modified HTC_IME virtual keyboard in the Nexus forum puts the iOS vk to shame.

mine seems loose too, it might jus be normal...I hope tmobile and htc are reading these kinda threads and they need to say something if its normal!
now on the other hand, has anyone read anything about the desire z? i mean its the same phone, does it have the same problems?
Here's a picture of a 2 G2s (I ordered a replacement and they are side by side). Which one has better hinges?

Both open fairly easily by the way. I'm convinced this is by design.
The one on the right? The one on the left, the screen part seems to drop down to the right more.. the right G2, the screen is flat..

Yep, the one on the right is the replacement and the one I am keeping. Mind you both will open if I pick them up holding the top/bottom half alone. I think we should all stop obsessing about this and enjoy the phone. That's what I am planning to do now.
Yeah, my G2 hinge is one of the loosest I've seen.. but luckily for me it doesn't hamper me at all in normal usage. If it does in the future I will get a replacement since I have the premium insurance plan.. but for now I'm loving it!

Well, my Touch Pro2 has apparently developed a Newton Ring over the weekend. I have never noticed it before, but it is quite obvious today under the harsh florescent lighting of my workplace. It's maybe half an inch from the edge of the screen on the sides and top, and maybe a quarter of an inch on the bottom.
Nothing undue happened to it this weekend. I've always kept it in the manufacturer's case, unless it was sitting on a table or being used.
I'm not really concerned about the ascetic problem, but I have seen in some places that the screen will eventually stop functioning? Is that correct? Should I look into getting this replaced?
Thanks for your time.
Hi
Are you sure the newton rings are in your display and not in your touch panel ? This is more prone to get newton rings.

Mine developed 2 a while back. They seemed to be smaller, but started to grow a little, so I just took it back and exchanged it. It should come with a year std warranty. As far as effecting the functionality of the phone, not really sure, but I'm sure it annoys the hell out of you like it did me. The funny thing is, not sure how mine happened. I BABY the hell out of the phone, so not sure what caused it.
And ATT says this is "user abuse"
Short version, escalated 3 time to a manager who replaced it right away. I have only had the phone since Jan 3rd.
The key to getting it replaced seems to be to tell them that device gets really hot when talking on it.
That was the first thing the manager asked me when I was transfered and he immediately issued a replacement, after being denied by 1st and 2nd level support.
I have a hard time believing that there is anything that I could do to cause a perfect rectangle to show up.

Very interesting...have you actually noticed any unusual warmth from the unit when using or charging it? My suspicion has always been that the mysterious newton rings are often caused by internal thermal conditions rather than external ones.
I haven't experienced one myself (knock on wood...), but I do notice that under certain circmstances the phone is noticibly warmer (like when charging while also running wifi or BT), and I'm thinking this could be the kind of thing that will lead to a visible newton ring, over time, even just a few weeks. The temp won't be enough to cause alarm, but if/when it happens enough, repeatedly, I imagine there could very well be a connection.
My take on it.
I work for a company that makes ruggedized, WinMo handhelds, so I have access to resources like engineers with 20+ years of experience.
My theory is that it is a materials/ manufacturing defect. Something is causing delamination of the digitizer overlay from the glass LCD. Could be heat, as the phone does warm up during charging and calls.
I have heard of similar issues with displays being shipped by air carrier in cargo holds being damaged while being shipped from Asia.
What I find most odd is that it is almost a perfect rectangle, this is not an "organic" failure. I would love to see what sits right under the display that is the same size as the effected area.
The other extremely frustrating part of this is the AT&T considers "ANY" screen defect to be user neglect, sight unseen and only after several escalations did I get any results. Now I am afraid they are going to get the old phone and then try to charge me for it.

You can take a look at the disassembly guide I attached, but even after looking at every shot of the guts it still looks like the only single component that comes close to matching in position and dimensions is the battery itself.
I just noticed for the first time that the phone they used for the teardown actually has a newton ring of its own...you can see it clearly in the first pic
My TMO TP2 got this a couple of weeks ago, and on Monday my touchscreen quit responding all of a sudden. I noticed that as i pressed on the screen at certain spots they started to stick to the LCD and making my screen unresponsive.
And for 2 days i had to use my phone without the touchscreen and resorted to Rhodium Keyboard Controller to assign keys to correspond to the soft keys on the screen. Text and email are impossible without the TS on the TP2 luckily I showed this to a friend of mine and together we figured out how to make it respond by moving my fingers on the screen to release the LCD from the screen.
So for the last few days, i have been on the phone with T-Mobile and some repair centers trying to find out the best route to take and I didn't realize that others were having the same problem. I almost filed an insurance claim to replace my TP2. Thankfully i may be able to save the $130 and use the manufacture warranty to get a replacement.
Has anyone had any luck using warranty to get yours replaced outside of your initial 30 day return period? This is my 2nd TP2 as the first one went bad also.
Thanks in advance

After talking to a first level rep and a retention specialist, who both refused to do a warranty replacement, the manager I escalated to asked me right off the bat if it heated up when talking. I of course said yes it does, and he sent a replacement.
Good luck, YMMV
My HD BLACKSTONE developed Newton Rings several months ago, but the screen only stopped responding since 4 weeks.
I sent It to repair service in Spain, not into HTC but into Movistar, the network provider.
They changed the screen and the digitizer under warranty, and sent It back in 15 days.
The only thing they have put on the delivery note is that this device (mine) has no longuer any warranty, out the problems relating the new screen, because they have detected the original sofware was modified (I flashed my HD hundred times...)
This is my experience.
So, it's been almost 6 months since my OP. I still have the same phone. The weekend of the original post, the touchscreen did actually stop working, and I noticed what looked like a hole in the layer above the screen. I took it into T-Mobile and went through customer service, and in the middle of being on the phone, the touch screen started working again. Not coincidentally, the hole / tear was also gone.
I have had this happen once more, and was actually able to kind of massage it out and get the screen working again. So I now am certain to take the phone out of my pocket before doing any heavy lifting, since both times it has happened I was moving boxes around.
I didn't bother to have it replaced, as current suspicions point to the fact that it would simply develop on the new phone too. I have definitely used it a couple times where it got very very warm, as in, warm enough that I actually pull off the back cover to help circulation. This is mostly with playing a high-resources game and charging at the same time.
my own Newton ring...................................);
My Tilt 2 has developed the same type of distortion on the right side of the screen. The ring is oblong and moves with pressure on the screen. It is most definitely more obvious under florescent lights. ATT maintains that I have damaged the screen by "pressing or tapping too hard". Like the rest of y'all, I have taken very good care of my device. It is always in it's case and always has a screen protector. They emphatically refuse to warranty the phone. The fee for factory repair was quoted at $377.00. The business care specialist states that there are NO KNOWN ISSUES with this device. Anyone have any ideas.
Newton Ring Fixed..................
Returned my Tilt 2 to HTC (AT&T is a substandard company with substandard customer service and should be broken up like Ma Bell was; As soon as my contract is up I WILL switch to Verizon for my service.) HTC replaced the touch screen at no charge other than the triage fee. Happy Days! AT&T pointed their fingers in my eye and said "physical damage" which was ludicrous, as the ring occurred overnight while my T2 was charging. Did I say AT&T service is really, really poor? Thank you HTC America.
I am planning to buy either MT4G or G2, I like the feel of the G2 more but since this is my last month in the US and it will be hard to replace the phone , I am worried about future physical problems. For those who had the G2 for more than a month , does the hinge really cause you any problems with normal usage? like texting , holding the phone , put it in your pocket? browsing the web? Does the screen close with normal usage? Did you notice any problems with building quality ?
nope, i think im one of the only ones that dont.
In my experience the hinge is really only a pain in the ass when you're actually inspecting it and testing it's quality, I mean I don't have a problem with it at all from day to day use. Other than the hinge it's a great phone to have and it would be a shame to let a little imperfection ruin it.
the hinge isnt a problem, its only a problem if YOU make it a problem (yes some do have faulty hinges) but in reality, this phone follows Murphys law and the laws of gravity. or w/e....my phone seems fine.
p.s. AS long as you use the phone in the intended way it was supposed to be used. then you shouldnt have a probem what so ever.
no. the hinge on mine work fine. I barely even open it thanks to swype.
hinge is so problem. if it's not this loose, this phone is ok. and what makes me frustrated is some can get not loose hinge but mine is this loose. it's hard to hold so the display doesnt fall.
holding the phone with keyboard closed is also like shaky.

Even with normal usage? like texting while walking or sitting?
Let me put it this way: I'm a 15 year old kid and I can't hold it with the keyboard open without holding onto the screen as well. So it'd be pretty much impossible for the screen to "fall" down on me.

The only down fall of the hinge is when you are in bed trying to txt or do something. But I found a way to cure that. I type with one thumb and the other thumb holds the screen up lol

never had a problem with the hinge ever.
I have issues with my hinge from time to time, If im holding my phone at a certain angle while using the hardware keyboard the screen somemtimes falls and it is a bit shaky, and for those who say just use swype what's the point of owning the G2 if you don't use the hardware keyboard at all???
The Hinge's poor design doesn't detract much from the overall greatness of this phone. But after holding DOZENS have G2's I'm pretty sure that's how they all are... nobody has a G2 hinge as tight as the G1 hinge, and it' impossible just based on the design.
It is a little loose even when closed if you press in the right spots.... it's not awful but some find it more annoying than others. My girl has a Droid 2 Global, and her sliding mechanism is as tight as a 14 year old Amish girl.... but her phone can't compete with mine on any other level.

14 year old Amish girl. Aha. WIN!
To be honest, the hinge will never be a problem thanks to swype.
Other than the few times i pull good old qwerty out to type my retardedly long password that contains symbols and letters and numbers, I always use Swype for everyday messages. It's so easy to use and so fast.
And if you do want to use the qwerty keyboard, here's a hint:
Put the inside bottom half of both your index fingers on the part of the phone where the top and the bottom are still connected together after the screen has slid up, and the top part of ur indexes hooked around the phone resting on the back panel. The pressure from the bottom part of your index fingers will keep the screen up.
This is the natural way I held the phone while typing and am surprised at people who complain about the screen sliding down while typing, cuz they would have to hold it pretty retardedly to get the screen to slide down.
I myself don't have a problem with the hinge. Some people might if they use a holster, so just be careful if you holster it. Also my wifes phone actually pops open in her purse which drains the battery sooner. I also had that happen while in my hoody pocket.
I have a simple, if not botched, solution for it though. When you get the phone, the cord and headset have a nice small black rubber band on them. Its the perfect fit for this phone. I just stretch it around bottom over the track pad. Its easy to pull off and holds the phone snugly closed.

Dear all,
After having experienced scratches on my phone's screen and reading countless of similar complaints by others, I have decided to petition HTC to do something about it.
The phone is supposed to have Gorilla Glass 2 which is scratch-resistant (not scratch-proof, I know) and so should resist the kind of scratches normal glass would endure from being in a pocket with keys. But it seems that HTC One X users are divided into two camps: The 'My screen is crazy durable! I can put it in the tumble dryer, take a hammer to it, etc.' camp and the 'I've got a scratch within an hour of having it. It was just in my pocket!' camp.
There is cause to believe some batches were simply defective.
Please take the time to sign this petition! Thank you.
Petition HTC One X Screen Scratches
PS - Don't bother saying:
1. It is not invincible or scratch-proof. It is only scratch-resistant.
Yes we all know this, but these scratches have occurred through normal use.
2. If you care so much, then why didn't you use a screen protector?
Because the whole point of having Gorilla Glass 2 is for users not to have to resort to using screen protectors which detracts from the beauty of the graphics.
3. You must have done something to it, MY screen is perfectly fine!
No, majority of those who have complained have either taken extreme care in using their phone, or used it in a way any other person would have. Most have also used HTC phones previously with no such problems.

First off, thanks Sebianoti for helping me post the thread. I hope this will garner enough support and attention.
Corning have responded to me and this is what they said:
Good Day!
We are sorry to hear that you've had a problem with your device. While Corning® Gorilla® Glass is better able to survive the real-world events that most commonly cause glass to scratch, chip or break, if subject to enough damage, Gorilla Glass, like all glass, can break. We recommend you contact your device manufacture to review your warranty and their repair program.
Thank you

I have emphasied in bold the crucial part - that it is better able to survive real-world events i.e. normal use.
I just want to say something, and it's purely for clarifications sake...
If I view my phone under a light (with the screen off) and move it about I can see hash marks over the entire phone screen - almost like the pixel arrangement of the screen. I'm assuming this is NOT what you're on about and you have actual scratches on the screen? If so, then I'm in the 'I have a perfect phone' camp but good luck...although I don't know if it'll do any good

Yes, that is not what I mean. I actually have three types of scratches on my screen:
1. Light tiny scratches which can't be caught on camera and aren't bothersome;
2. Big, long scratches which can be captured and don't bother use of the screen but is obvious; and
3. One 1cm vertical scratch which distorts the colour of the screen.

I think what we are seeing is scratching of the oleophobic coating which is on top of the Gorilla Glass, previous HTC phones didn't have this coating and so maybe that is why owners of previous models are saying they didn't get scratched so easily.
I'm sure someone posted they used an abrasive polish to try and remove the scratch and this then caused a bigger change in the glass appearance as they removed the coating from a larger area, so then continued to polish the whole screen to remove the coating. I'm not sure cosmetically what the final outcome was.
If I'm honest the oleophobic coating is a waste of time, it still gets covered in grease from fingers, and if it just means the screen appears to get scratched easily as the coating is softer than the glass, they should stop using it.
This problem isn't unique to the HTC One X, I found several references to similar issues, the iPhone 4S/iPad is prone to the same problem it seems. The difference is here we are incorrectly blaming HTC for inferior Gorilla Glass screens, in some cases it is suggested HTC haven't even used Gorilla Glass, when elsewhere it is recognised it isn't the glass getting scratched but the coating.

I think there's a percentage of people on this forum that are nuts. First, because their expectations are totally unrealistic. Second, for thinking a small group of people with unrealistic expectations are going to be able to garner enough support to force a multi-billion dollar company to change a devices design based on their whim. HTC puts out a product designed to serve the needs of millions and made choices in its design along the way. Don't like the choices they made? Don't buy the product. If you bought a Sony TV and didn't like the layout of the remote would you go on to a forum to start a campaign to have it redesigned? Why people feel that they should have some sort of say or control over how companies like Samsung and HTC design their mobile devices baffles me. The best way to send them a message is to simply stop buying their products.
First off, Would like to agree with point 1,2 and 3.
Secondly, I have no scratches since owning this device from release day.
Thirdly, what do you hope to achieve with a vote? Nothing will change. 1% of people with scratches will vote, 0.0001% of people without scratches will vote. 72% of statistics are made up. Getting a proportional representation is HARD.
Fourthly, This thread is pointless.
Fifthly, HTC, me, and 99% of the readers of your post don't care.
Sixthly, meh.

Look mate, this is about the quality...
If you get a phone would you be happy if it started getting scratches even tho it uses the best screen that protects against that?,
i don't think so, another aspect to look at this is, many of those who purchased the One X got it on a 2 year contract, if it starts
getting scratches due to no fault of your own then imagine what it will look like in a year or so,

I think the guys concerned over scratches that have happened that basically shouldn't of IF it was using GG2
therefore in the UK at least if a product is sold with certain claims and those claims are proven to be untrue they are liable.
different strokes for different folks but you gotta fight for your right to party

There are reports of the same issue (microscopic scratches) with GG2 on the SGS3 forum. The difference is no one there would even think about starting a petition. In fact, most of the stuff people post on the One X forum would be run-off the SGS3 forum soon after it was posted. They have a far more serious issue. The edge-to-edge glass on the front of the SGS3 is easily cracked under stress or when it's dropped. They discuss cases and ways of preventing it from happening, not starting campaigns to get Samsung to change the design.
By all means carry on with your crusade. But think about this, if HTC were to admit there was a fault with the display it would affect 100% of phones produced. Every owner could demand a new display. At HTC's cost of $150 per phone, assuming they've sold 500K so far, that's $75MM in profit lost. Do you honestly see that happening? They'd gladly accept you and a percentage of others never buying an HTC product before absorbing that type of expense.
Back to a more constructive note, after hearing about the possibility of scratches I started investigating screen protectors. I bought this one. The full body protection version also comes with a protector for the camera lens. That to me is a more serious design issue then the performance of GG2 which is out of both Samsung and HTC's control.
http://www.bestskinsever.com/htc-one-x-skin
Its wet apply, incredibly easy to put on perfectly, covers the curves of the display, is crystal clear once on, and feels almost the same as the naked display. I’m very picky about my display and I’d highly recommend it.
BTW, who and where find out that HOX (international version) got Gorilla Glass 2? i cant find such info
My phone has been through quite a bit, dropped spend all day in my work pants and no scratches at all. Maybe I just lucky but my last phone htc desire been through same treatment and that was scratched bad.

What?... the frustration... god damn it HTC get your facts together,
I emailed HTC a number of times, each reply said the same thing...
HTC One X is using Gorilla glass 1.
Yep, that's right csj85, no less. Wait, what? Some random dude on the internet? Is that what proof is these days? When I studied for my degree, nothing from the internet was allowed to be submitted as evidence or research material; yeah, not even Wikipedia!
I have an EVO LTE and I can assure you..this things scratches easily. I have a nasty mark directly in the center of my screen. Followed by minor marks along it. I take care of my stuff so this is insulting.

You guys amaze me. So you're actually suggesting that to prove a point about something as minor as whether a phone does or doesn't have GG2 someone photoshopped a tweet from HTC? There's an old adage, "people that can't trust, can't be trusted." Ponder that for a minute.
Mine has a small crack along one edge, I didn't drop it and no-one uses it but me. It's with HTC at the mo over the poor wifi issue but I'm hoping they'll sort the screen out too. I'm very careful with my phone, don't even take it out much but I'm thinking maybe there was a slight imperfection which I didn't notice and it propagated.

Sir i can assure you that the picture in question is in fact fake... I have the original right here!
Seriously though the screen can't scratch itself, it's glass! Look after it.
lol you guys...
So I am sitting in my chair at home and my phone slipped from my hand or something and I reached to grab it. Of course this just results in my hitting my phone and making it speed up as it falls against the plastic edge of my sliding glass door. It fell face first but the face wasn't hit. I had my Otterbox Defender case on it and the hard plastic edge of the Otterbox had two small dings in it.
Afterwards I noticed the touch screen sensitivity was not working properly. The screen is not cracked but something underneath it certainly it. It is not noticeable until the screen is off and even then it would be impossible to take a picture of it and post it for anybody to see here.
I do have insurance on it but I will have to wipe it and put the stock ROM back on it. I will also have to do something with the flash counter I guess.
There is no way this should have broken given what happened.
I will have to also place some blame on the Otterbox case. It has both a hard plastic guard on the screen and a softer one. There is absolutely no cushioning effect if the screen is hit. It just smacks the plastic case into the screen.
Maybe I could do the same thing a hundred times and it would never happen again.
Dam that sucks. I have the Otter box case too and I dropped my phone multiple times but everything was ok. Maybe something came loose from the glass digitizer like a flat wire.

original poster here....I had my wife take a picture of it. You can't see the cracks but I did notice that something is causing a 'bleeding' under the glass. I used my onscreen flashlight app and selected a color in order for the bleeding area to be more visible. This didn't happen until about 20 minutes or so after I dropped it.
The screen appears normal otherwise with the exception of the large smudge on the right and the lighter colored smudge on the left.
I will post a pic via tiny pic..lets see if it works

I would say that you are just very unlucky. .not that the phone is pathetic in any way.
The bigger the screen the bigger the chance of it breaking.
There are just as many folks like myself who have had their phone fall from much higher heights without incident. ..and consider ourselves lucky.
There are never any guarantees on this regardless of what case you have it in.
It's not bullet proof kevlar....it's glass and plastic.
Take it back and get a new one or something diffetent if your of the mind to if you feel the phone is too fragil for your liking.

It sucks that your phone took a hit but it's luck of the draw. It all depends on how it lands, what the impact point is, and how the impact is distributed. If the N2 had mass durability issues we'd have known by now as millions have been sold.
This one did just fine from 5'...
My phone's taken worse falls. Black ice and pavement at least 3ft off the ground. Worst it's ever gotten was a pinhole ding near the edge of the screen. Phone works fine otherwise. I don't use an Otterbox either, just those aluminum edge bumpers.
Considering that my iPhones (before I moved to Android) each had Otterboxes, I think the blame is mostly on Otterbox. My iPhones all had their screen/digitizer give out, crack or fall apart from the same type of falls when in the case, but oddly survive when they were naked. Don't get me wrong. Otterbox was awesome when it came to blunt force impact, such as getting run over, (Yes, I've accidentally run over an iPhone before...) but they just don't do so well from regular falls for some reason.
Sorry man... I'm just laughing my a$$ off right now... not because your phone is broken (that does definitely suck) but the fact that you had to come on here and lay blame on everything but yourself (the durability of the phone, how it absolutely should not have happened especially when you stated that you sped the phone's velocity after you dropped your very expensive device in the first place, and the Otterbox that supposed protect your phone). You made a mistake, you have the insurance, all good, right? Try stopping to smell the flowers instead of pissing all over them because you stubbed your own toe on the way over.
Bummer.:crying:
In the fall I was using my Note as a GPS device on my motorcycle...it actually fell off the handlebar mount but dangled by the powercord on the pavement for about 100 ft. at 20 mph. I was in SHOCK but it didn't get ANY marks...unbelievable.
I had a simple TPU case that extends just a bit above the screen.
I have no complaints about durability in my situation.
Its luck of the draw really. I bet there are hundreds of people out there who've dropped their note2 in far worse positions and nothing has happened.
Happened to me with my iphone 3gs. I dropped it probably over 10 times. It always fell out of one jacket I had. It fell on the corners, sides, face down and back down on concrete, tile, asphalt...etc. the one time it breaks ... it fell on my wood deck and cracked the screen.

The OP is right though... in terms of build quality.. this is a beyond cheap plastic gumball machine device...
I love my note 2, and i'm still keeping it.. the insides are just amazing.. but the outside? just embarrassing really..
Around the screen part at the top i'm already noticing a GAP/Crack forming i can stick my fingernail in and even make wider... it's frustrating as hell.

Yeah unfortunately, it's what Samsung had to do to make the device marketable. I knew what I was getting into which is why I have insurance on my Note 2. If Samsung made this device more durable, I'm sure the price would've shot up more than the standard $299 upgrade price which a lot of people think is quite a lot in the first place (like you said, the insides are awesome which is what the selling point really is). All Samsung products are flimsy from their TVs to their counter tops. They are functional, sleek looking, and for their electronics, fast.... But you have to be careful with them (check out how easily you can warp a Samsung LCD/LED TV just by holding it wrong causing light leak... But man, does it look great when it isn't busted) .

Yes, I do have insurance. I went to the Assurion site and filed a claim. Towards the end the site gave me a bunch of sh it about filling out and uploading a signed affidavit, providing a copy of my phone bill, a copy of my id, and a picture of the back of the phone under the battery (or a sales receipt or upc code from the box). The site says that takes up to 48 hours, then it takes 1-2 days to ship out, and then another day or two to arrive at my house. I had dealt enough with [email protected] replacing my warranty phone and taking a ridiculous amount of time. I ended up just going down and paying like $709 for a new one AND had the AT&T store do the insurance paperwork for the phone. I might get the phone Friday; who knows.
All I know is that I will have two Note 2 phones. I might take the one back that I just bought and pay the restocking fee. Or, it might be nice to have an extra just to screw around with different ROMS and not have to worry about staying up till late at night getting my phone functioning properly for the next day. I have a lot of learning to do with the Android platform. I don't like having my phone on me and not having it fully functioning without all my adjustments set and apps working properly. I am like OCD when it comes to that and it causes me anxiety for some reason.
I wonder if all these developers have a buttload of extra phones that they use in addition to their everyday carry phone. It seems odd that they would be doing all this experimenting on their everyday phones.
I'm shocked your phone broke like that, especially with a defender on it. Just recently my phone fell out of my waistband while I was running and bounced down the pavement without a case on it. Picked it up off the ground screen first and there wasnt a single mark on my screen. Got some nice gouges on the back and sides but my screen is still flawless. Made a thread about it with pics. I'm surprised people are getting worse results WITH hefty cases on them.

Other than the obvious fact that those of us who have dropped our devices are responsible, I still think it's the case. Otterbox may need to consider gel cushions at certain points of the case to have greater absorption of the shock of impact. The edges seems to be the most susceptible since there's no cushion at all. Just a snug, form-fitting hard plastic with a gel/rubber layer on top. That sudden impact still causes the phone to push against the hard plastic.
Just think of it this way; In an accident, head-on collision or being hit from behind, your head is pushed hard against your headrest. The headrest is cushioned with foam, but that foam will feel like hard plastic against the back of your head from the sudden force of movement. But the interior layer of the best Otterbox is hard plastic, so imagine what that must feel like during impact.
I never liked the defender cases due to the hard plastic inside. It would always leave wear marks on my phones somewhere. I switched over to the commuter which is a soft rubber with a hard outter shell. That's the way to go in my eyes.

First, I apologize for using this forum, but I don't know where else to post it, there's no nubia Z50 forum.
Basically, I bought this phone a little over a week ago (bought it on aliexpress) but I have noticed something rather quickly.
The curved edge has a HUGE and very intrusive dead zone. You see those edge mistouch protection options? Well, imagine you cranked it to the max and then some more, but had no way to turn it off.
The thing is, THE PHONE DOES HAVE THIS SETTING! I have turned it to zero, but it STILL feels like aproximately the zones in red in the following image are not responsive:

Like, when you try to type on the keyboard, the letters that are on the very edge do not respond to your touch, unless you touch it on the inner part of the key. See the video for a better understanding of this:
https://www.dropbox.com/s/8sic0dxvmg3v6qx/VN20230331_072546.mp4?dl=0
So, when you touch on the edge, it doesn't register inputs, but only sometimes... let me elaborate.
****
Mind you that I have dropped it ONCE, but rather lightly so it's not that. Also important to note, the phone received like 2 updates out of the box, and as I installed them pretty much immediately, I don't know if they were the culprits since I didn't have the chance to test the phone before they were installed.
***
Now, I believe it is a software issue rather than a hardware issue, which you mind find surprising considering all I've mentioned.
Why?
When I try a touch tester app (or the swipe function of the keyboard) and START a swiping movement FROM THE INNER PART OF THE SCREEN towards the edge, it registers my input just fine, I can even swipe along the edge just fine, again, as long as it started away from the edge.
But, when I START THE INPUT ON THE EDGE ITSELF (just as would happen when writing on the keyboard), it simply doesn't register it at all.
You can see it better on the vid I linked above, but it seems that it's some sort of hardcoded very aggressive curved edge misstouch prevention that cannot be turned off nor even tuned down.
I like the phone, and while this is not a total dealbraker or makes it unusable, it is very annoying and I may consider selling it if this has no solution. Any ideas? Does anybody with this phone has this problem too or something? I have not found anyone online talking about it.
Thank you.

I have a Vivo Nex 3 and a Mate 40 RS and I have similar problem like yours. However in these two phones I have the option not to use the edges for the display so the screen only covers the flat part of the screen. With this experience I prefer a phone with flat screen or just slightly curve like the samsung S22 ultra.

I think the curvature effect the contact between your finger and the screen. Therefore any phone with the curvature at the edge similar to the Z50 or the mate 40 RS you will have this kind of problem. That is the reason your phone software allows you to change the touch sensitivity at the edge.
I have the Nubia Z50 as of yesterday and on the curved edge of the screen you have to tap or touch this area with your finger perpendicular with the curve. If you try and tap it straight on it's hit and miss.

Thank you.
