48 Hours later, I broke my screen

Figures; just 2 nights after buying my GN, i managed to shatter the screen.
The sad part is I don't even remember it happening. WAY TOO MUCH GIN LAST NIGHT. Anyway, It looks like i dropped it face down, or tweaked the phone. Idk.
I took my case off so that it would be easier to get the phone in and out of my pocket. Bad move.
Has anyone else pulled a smooth move and done this as well yet? I have a feeling the screen of the GN is going to be easy to break.

I had a similar story with my Droid Charge. Don't remember explicitly what happened and then the next thing I know the screen was broken...
I bought the GN and got insurance this time. Expensive lesson to learn... =(

i guess we're going to need to put some heavy duty cases/screen protectors on this phone.

trying to see if i can claim through warranty before i go through insurance.

Do me a favor and squeeze your phone right now... there is no way your going to break it. And I personally enjoy the back. If they had used another back the phone would be thicker. As far as the screen is concerned, go with zagg.

Yup o fumbled it this morning. Bounced around a few times but luckily it only managed to scuff the bottom by the USB port. Not too bad but I never drop my phones.

Honestly, I'm gonna have to agree.
GN seems pretty damn fragile at this point.
Being young, I've dropped many phones. My last phone, a BB Storm2 (I know, I know), just got dropped face down last week. Maximum result of damage? The corner of the screen chipped a tiny bit.
With how exposed the GN screen is, and even because it's curved...
Reiterating again, I will definitely be investing in cases for this phone. Anyone have experience with cases that come in and out of jeans pockets easily?

I would imagine if it was face down and pressed on it would easily crack.

No they didn't. Ant phone can break if its dropped just right. The only thing you can do is be as smart and careful as possible and have insurance.

I can't agree anymore. Any phone can break if it is dropped just right.

I dropped it while hopping a wall earlier, not a scratch. It landed on the screen, but the contoured display worked.

simple fix.
dont drop the phone. I dropped my droid 1 like once and never dropped my TB. wont drop this one either.

But what I was saying. I agree on the battery cover. As far as build quality, of the three phones I own (don't like selling them), the droid 1 feels like the most solidly built. It also feels the heaviest due to the keyboard. As far as the screen, it's glass. Glass breaks or shatters. If you want a screen that doesn't break, get a plastic screen or we could have thicker glass. I agree with the others on how it's dropped. I've dropped my Incredible a few times on pavement, even face down. The only thing that saved it was the lips on the case. The curved glass may contribute. Screen protectors will not really absorb the impact to prevent shattering or breakage.
Bulletproof glass on phones? Lol.
It doesn't feel much cheaper to me though I don't like the battery cover but it probably is related to being thinner than say HTC.

48 hours later, and I've got a chip in my glass! I had a ring thrown at me, I was sitting on a couch and my Nexus was face up on the couch itself but half covered by my shirt. The ring just happened to land on it and bounce off. Tiny chip, but I'm so frustrated with myself about it! I dropped my Desire a few times on concrete and all that happened was small dents, now the tiniest little ring knocks it and there you go. Annoyed that I didn't have it facing down, or in my pocket! I hate screen protectors, I prefer pouch cases so I can just put it in there as much as possible.
Going to go to the store I got it from tomorrow and hope to swap it for a brand new one... Wish me luck.

So let me get this straight.....you go get drunk, damage your phone, and don't even know what you did to damage it, and it's Samsung's fault because the phone seems fragile?! You don't even know what you did to it. For all you know, you might have pretended to be scoring a touchdown and spiked the phone down to the ground. I don't see how this has anything to do with the phone being fragile as much as it has to do with you not being able to care for your things.

So you got too drunk and broke your expensive new phone, what's the point of making a thread about it?
Try drinking less next weekend, when you lose control of your limbs and start breaking things that your body telling you something.

Galaxy S3 Cracked Glass (Read this if it has happened to you!)

Ok everybody, the purpose of this thread is to dispel the MYTH that you can not replace just the front glass. Good news for my brethren who as I, have learned that Gorilla Glass hardly deserves the moniker.
My phone was dropped from a height of less than three feet with a Speck Candyshell case installed and the screen cracked. Luckily the digitizer and SAMOLED were still fully functioning. I wondered if there was a way to replace just the glass. If you take the time to google Galaxy S3 replacement glass, you will find a mixture of threads on the subject with most saying that only a professional could do so. There are a few youtube videos on the matter, including one proclaiming that it is impossible to separate and replace only the outer glass without destroying the digitizer. This simply is NOT true. Not less than one hour ago I did exactly that.
Supplies:
Replacement Glass (Can be found for less than twenty dollars complete with a plastic separator, phillips screwdriver, and 3m tape cut fit.)
Hair Dryer
Painter's Tape (Or any semi-sticky tape that won't leave residue)
Gloves
Small Flathead Screwdriver
What I did:
First I removed the back cover and battery from the GS3. I went into my small bathroom and misted it with a spray bottle in hopes that it would reduce the dust in the air. I set my wife's hair dryer to high heat and low speed. I heated the bottom corner of my phone first because there was a small chip that looked like it would be a good place to start prying the screen off. I used the small flathead to start the prying because the provided plastic separator was not sturdy enough to initiate this. You don't have to worry about scratching the display during this step because there is that nice gap between the display and the actual bottom of the phone as well as the top. So either of these two places would be an ideal starting point. As you SLOWLY pry the screen up you will notice a small gap of air forming between the glass and the display. As soon as the screen is just high enough to fit a plastic separator between the glass and display, do it. I can not stress enough, go sloooowwwww. If you do not remove the glass strategically and smoothly you will cause scratches or cracks in the SAMOLED glass (The actual display). Pry from the largest shards first. Once the screen was high enough for the separator I applied a lot of heat again, and especially focusing on the gap so more heat would reach the glue directly. Heat, pry, heat, pry, heat, pry. When the glass is almost separated resist the urge to speed up, it was hard for me too... It is OK if the original glass cracks a little more as you remove it, when this happens change spots where you are prying. The glass should come off as one sheet held by the glue and colored portions. Undoubtedly you will find tiny shards and perhaps a fleck or two of dust. This is where the painter's tape comes in. Use the tape to remove any debris off of the SAMOLED screen. Do not touch the actual display, not even with gloves. This will smudge what is left of the original adhesive and will lead to annoying marks under your glass after the process. I am not sure of a good solvent that would not damage the screen or I would have used it, mine has a few smudges under it. However, they are only visible when the screen is off. I then took the 3m tape provided with my glass and applied it to the two appropriate places on the phone. Next, I removed the backing off of the new glass and carefully applied it from the top to the bottom. I had to use my screw driver to keep the capacitive button ribbons under the new glass in their proper positions. Once the glass was on the phone I heated it all up one more time to make the leftover glue and the new adhesive softer. Then I applied firm pressure around the circumference of the phone only. I let my phone cool down and then replaced the battery and cover. Finally I turned my phone back on and enjoyed all the glory of my achievement when EVERY aspect of my phone was fully functional. My phone is now a hybrid pblue/white because for whatever reason the white glass was eight dollars cheaper than the blue glass. In my opinion, it looks great.
Ps For this operation the provided phillips screwdriver is not needed.

You should do a video tutorial and post in on youtube. Find someone with a cracked screen and offer to help. You will help many people and have tonnes of views

Happens with ANY tutorial really. People are still bricking their s3s. People are still flashing ROMs for the international version on our phones lol

If you lived closer to the northeast Texas area, I'd pay you to do that to my phone lol

My phoen cracked in similar fashion about 3 weeks ago.
I priced aorund and the fix around my area was 350 bucks to replace the entire screen,
I ended up spending 150 bucks more and bought it new again.
Had I known this then i would have def tried it.

I am up for replacing one to make a tutorial video. However, that would require trust on the part of the sender. Of course I would return the phone, because well, that would just be f***ed up. So, here is my offer; if anyone out there has a phone with cracked glass but fully functioning touch and display, send it to me minus the sim card, with the replacement glass, 3m tape, and the plastic separator. I will use your phone to make a tutorial video, and then ship it back to you with the couple of bucks you will provide for return shipping. If anyone is interested, pm me.
Disclaimer on this: Worst case scenario the SAMOLED will break and you will have to replace the screen/digitizer combo like originally. Likewise, I will not accept liability for any other damage to the phone, though I would take the utmost care with your device and do not expect to damage it in any way.
If nobody is interested, that is fine and I understand. However, this is not for my gain as my device is already fixed and functional. Also, the repair will be done within a week of receiving the phone so do not expect it to be returned as soon as I receive it. I am a more than full time mechanical engineering student and I have a pretty busy schedule.
Side thought: I wonder why all of the phone repair professionals say that this process is near impossible unless you are a professional like they are? For instance, this guy http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=es8gezSdKv4&feature=youtu.be . I am in no way a professional phone repairman and I typically lack finesse. Yet, this was pretty simple to me...

Great thread. I haven't had to deal with a cracked screen (thank goodness) but kudos to you for going out on a limb and trying something others said wasn't possible. Much appreciated that you posted up pictures and a walkthrough for this.

Skinomi Screen Protectors

Here is a review I posted on Amazon about my terrible experience with Skinomi that I wanted to share.
I purchased this protection kit after reading through many reviews, and looking around for something simple that also protects my device from scratches. Little did I know what was going to happen after installing the screen protector.
The rear panels have a texture to the 3M film that gives you a little better grip than the aluminum of the G Pad, and the installation instructions are not great, but a few videos on their youtube page will help out with this.
The problems started when I installed the screen protector as directed in the instructions both on their webpage and youtube page. I powered the device off and cleaned it as stated (you obviously can't remove the battery on the device and this is an optional step) then I proceeded to lightly spray the solution onto the film and screen after washing my hands and installed it. I used a plastic card along with a microfiber cloth to squeegee out the bubbles and liquid as directed. The only problem was that the LG G Pad got the liquid inside of it because my device would no longer power on (the screen would just flicker and it would shut off) I charged it and tried to boot the device to no avail. Keep in mind I did not douse the device in the spray, I used the amount that was stated I.E. lightly spray as is shown in the video.
I also did not get any liquid near the SD card slot, charging port or headphone jack (these are the only openings on the devices besides the back speakers. I am to say the least extremely upset that my brand new tablet was destroyed by the product that was bound to protect it. I am not new to screen protectors, let alone wet application ones. I have owned many over the years from the Zagg ones to a tempered glass protector and everything in between. This product cleary is at fault for their process involved, and I would not recommend it to anyone!
I contacted customer support via a phone call and I was told that its not their responsibility and there is a disclaimer on the box and inside. I looked high and low and could not locate the "disclaimer". I even took pictures and emailed it to them. I was met with a rude representative (4 actually) who constantly spoke over what I was saying, jumped to conclusions and otherwise were unhelpful. When I requested a supervisor I was told that all of them are in a meeting. I asked when the meeting would be over (but no one knew) clearly the representatives didn't want to address the actual issue. I am disgusted by the lack of support and the blatant disrespect that the company has shown toward its customers. I will be pursuing a solution through whatever means possible and spreading the word of their terrible products and practices. I wanted to share this story so others do not fall to the same fate or have their devices become inoperable due to a faulty product and a terrible company.

Update: I tried to call them back to speak with a supervisor but they blocked my cell number. When I call it says "the number can not be reached from your area code" this is a terrible company that blacklists any customers who call them out. I called from another phone at it went through.

I'm sorry to hear about your bad experience, I personally don't use screen protectors anymore. Gorilla glass and its competitors have become so good that as long as I don't keep my device in the same pocket with my keys everything is fine, and it looks much much better than with a screen protector that will always be scratched and have bubbles, it also feels much less smooth.

I feel the same way, I have a tempered glass on my Note 3 and I really like the feel of just glass. I use the G pad for my text books so I don't have to carry around 1000 page engineering books all day at school. I usually use one because I don't want to completely destroy the tablet with all f the constant moving around in my backpack. Thankfully I had a warrantee through SquareTrade which will cover the damages, but I still feel that other people should know.
I really like my G Pad and I wish that I did further research about the Skinomi protectors and wet application for the G pad so I could have avoided this. Hopefully if it can't be fixed I will have another one in a week or two, but I would be much more upset if I didn't have coverage for this. I am really meticulous when I apply these things so I am just disappointed that the G pad isn't sealed well and the fluid (soapy solution provided) is "very thin" in terms of its viscosity so it just goes into the tiniest of crevices. I might just throw my new one back into its TPU case and get a sleeve for it even though my backpack has a padded felt like pouch to prevent damaging the screen. The carbon back panels were really nice and not hard to install ones you figured out how to do the corners, but I will never use another wet application protector on a non water proof device.

I recall one of the guys on here had the same problem with another wet application screen protector. At the time it swayed me to buy a dry application Protector, but I've never been over the moon about it.
My youngest scratched it an hour after fitting when she drew across the screen with a kids pencil, which was shocking as kids pencils are so soft.
I bought a zagg in the sale last week and got it yesterday. You've made me nervous now.

I did get a refund for the protector (obviously since it broke my G Pad) and Amazon wasn't too happy with the way that Skinomi handled the situation. I can't call their number since I'm they blocked it, and their email response to me was "sorry we can't help you" and that was all.
Their customer service is on par with that of Comcast who time and time again have been rated as the worst company for customer service. Amazon told me to file a complaint against them so it can be investigated and if necessary they will take action. I am still shocked at how rude the representatives were, if you asked a question the rep would cut you off mid sentence with an answer to something that wasn't completely asked yet. Then if you ask then to please stop, the rep will say you are uncooperative and hang up or transfer you to another equally rude person. Also when I inquired as to why I couldn't speak to any supervisor I was met with a sarcastic/childish response. I always strive to be as polite as possible, but when you are constantly rude to a customer and belittle them, its understandable that I would be upset. (in their eyes if you weren't whispering you were yelling at them and it was "unprofessional")
I will definitely be taking my business elsewhere, but I wanted to get the word out about their lack of customer service and support for their own products. Especially when in my box there are no disclaimers (which were 'supposed to be in there'). I'm not blind, or dumb, but apparently I need to be able to read the invisible words on the box.
Lets hope that either the company changes for the better or people stop supporting them if this is how they act.

Hopefully Amazon will investigate, so it's definitely worth pursuing this.
I wouldn't be surprised, if they find in your favour, that they suspend or even ban Skinomi from their site.
I'm not sure how you would go about it but it would be great if this made it to the xda news /portal.

sorry to hear that happen to you. wow that crazy how it got in your screen because i just installed a skinomi screen protector that i won on there facebook contest and i didn't get that problem. so do you know how did the liquid get in the screen because there is actually a gap on the screen between the plastic casing. best of luck to you.

Personally, I think that screen protectors are a waste of money and they degrade the use of the device. The real threat to these devices is a cracked screen, and screen protectors won't prevent that. Unless you wear sandpaper gloves or you're very careless, you're not likely to scratch these screens.

I went with a $10 armorsuit protector from Amazon that was a perfect fit and looks good.
I like that it makes the display a little more matte and provides a little resistance. I also hate hate hate scratches of any kind, so I never feel bad about going with a screen protector or replacing one if it gets messed up. It does absolutely stop a screen from getting cracked, but the only screen I've ever cracked was when I accidentally left it in a pocket and knelled down on it, so that's not my biggest fear.

Do you keep your phone in your right or left pocket? I have started putting mine in my left pocket because of the steel brads on the watch pocket on most jeans and shorts. I got a scratch on my Note 2 when I first got it.
Just wondering if this could be the cause.

Not sure which pocket or if i had coins or keys that scratch it, just letting peeps know the screen isnt as hard as glass

I drive a lifted Jeep Wrangler with 35" Mud Tires. I was talking to a friend and dropped my Note 4 out the window. It fell probably 3 feet and landed on Asphalt. The only damage to it was a booger on the top right corner of the metal band. And that's with no case at the time.

Just out of curiosity, is there official documentation of what kind of glass the Note 4 has? I've seen articles that claim it's Gorilla Glass 3, but the documentation at Samsung and AT&T doesn't mention that, as far as I can see.

Instead, the lesson is to be careful about where the phone is put. I always reserve my front left pocket exclusively for the phone, and if I did otherwise I'd consider that an invitation for scratches.

I need to find a quick free scratch gone method. Help?

You should ALWAYS use a screen protector for your phone. No exceptions. It will eventually scratch and you will regret not having one on. You should also have it in a case, well at least a slim case.
This is a fragile $800 piece of equipment which you use everyday. All it takes is one careless misstep and you got a cracked screen or a dent in your brand new phone.

proctv1ty and morditz...i think you guys should get together in a rubber room and figure out how to get brain matter transference to work properly. Oh wait, I think that already occurred or just factory reset your brains.

For the first time since my first smartphone (original iphone) I didn't use a screen protector with the Note 3. The screen remained perfect. I highly doubt they used an inferior glass to the Note 3's. At the very least it should be the same pane except with the slight curve on the edge.
While I don't doubt your screen got scratched there must be an explanation beyond that of blaming the quality of the glass.

I have to disagree. You never put a piece of film/plastic over a display, camera lens, etc. It will distort image output. I used to be a diehard screen protector proponent way back when I had my HTC EVO. I always used the most expensive kind. I remember having to change my protector one time and taking that thing off, there was a tremendous difference in screen quality. From that moment forward, I have never used another screen protector. I've owned every version of the Note and screen damage has between superficial to none. I dropped my Note 3 dozens of times on every surface imaginable, and there's only a half inch superficial scratch on the screen. Protectors are not necessary in this day and age. What's the point of having a qHD screen is you're going to diminish it's beauty with a screen protector??

You're mistaken. There are plenty of exceptions, for people who are careful enough with their phones. I've never used a case and never broken a phone, and for the last several phones I've had, I've never used screen protectors and never gotten even the slightest scratch or blemish on my screen.
Yes, I'm sure I'll end up damaging a phone once every 15 or 20 years. But if I divide that expense over the number of years involved, it will come to less cost and inconvenience than if I'd bought cases and screen screen protectors all along.

I wonder if I'm the first person to Crack their screen. 2ft drop to tile floor. I've never broken a phone before. Funny thing is my case is supposed to be here today.

Never thought about that "watch" pocket on jeans. Maybe I'll switch the phone to the left pocket and keys and such go in the right.
Although, as mentioned above I've dropped this Note 4 out of a Jeep window and had no scratches. I've also dropped it in the Jeep and had it slide between the console, under the seat and rattle around until I could stop and dig it out. Still, no scratches.

2 things I get immediately for a new device: a good case & a screen protector- preferably a glass one.

Glass back just cracked like that!!

Got My new edge+ yesterday. I was happy as a child playing with it all day. In the evening I was ready to go to sleep, the edge was a bit warm of using it, not hot but just warm. Didn't play games or so, just usual apps installing, browsing, YouTube, etc... I wanted to check something on my surface pro which was on the kitchen table. I layed my edge next to it on the table on its glass back, no cover. While I was busy on my surface I heard strange noises, like things cracking. At first I couldn't see where it came from, It lasted several minutes. After I was done I took my phone to put it on the charger and I felt something strange on the back. DAMN, the entire back cover was cracked, not just a bit but scattered! Just like that! I went crazy, really. It seems that the metal band just crashed the glass back cover. I suspect the the colder surface of the kitchen table shrinked the warm metal band of the edge and so crushing the glass somehow.... How on earth am I going to explain this in the store where I bought it? They will say I dropped it, but I didn't for sure. You can't see any dent or scratch proving that. I will see how it goes tomorrow, will keep you posted. I'll make some pictures as well and post them here. This Is clearly a manufacturers faulty construction. So beware of warm devices on a colder surface!!

Wow that's amazingly unlucky . I don't get glass backs on phones. 90% of the time it's covered by a case so what's the point. I'd rather have a strong plastic back.

There could have been a hairline crack there all along, it doesn't seem likely that a 'warm' phone on a 'cool' surface would cause it, there would need to be some more extremes of temperature I am certain, else this would be a commonly reported issue.
I wish you luck back at the retailer, I would definitely consider insurance and at least a minimal case to protect the back, there are some decent transparent ones that don't spoil the look too much

Hairline might Be possible, i certainly didn't notice it. But how do you explain the crushing of the glass, that lasted for minutes? It wasn't a dry crack, it kept on cracking, I saw the splinters popping of even when I held the device in my hand. I really felt like it was being crushed. Also notice the edges of the glass, like there was a big pressure on it

Oh, BTW if you place any phone in your back pocket and sit on it it will stand a very genuine chance of damage.

Glass, all glass, is to a degree unpredictable. I have seen Navy war ship port holes 18" Diameter and 1" thick bounce off a concrete floor and not break. I have also seen the very same portholes be left overnight only to find one smashed to pieces with no apparent reason at all in the morning?
Same thing can happen with 50 grand watches, sapphire glass is second in hardness only to diamond yet tap it in the 'right spot' and bingo? Come to mention it same thing with uncut diamonds!
Problem here will be trying to convince the sales outlet that it may not be a customer error. Now that may take some doing.

Yup! Pretty much what I was thinking. Glass is a very temperamental material and I think this guy was just unlucky. Mobile phone insurance is essential.

Same thing happened to me! But on the front of my screen ;-; I didn't drop it ever and just sent it in to Samsung 2 days ago for a warranty check. It's been delivered to UPS but haven't been given any feedback yet from Samsung. I hope mine gets fixed or I will be pissed!

As a suggestion, could it be a faulty battery? My previous iphone 4s had the same problem, the old battery started to expand and caused the back glass to crack.

When people replace the screens they heat the glass back of the phone up to a pretty high level just to pull it off. I would say something other than heat caused the issue.

More to the point, why do you buy a lovely looking shiny brand new phone then proceed to double the thickness, double the weight and make it look absolutely hideous?
I don't see why people do it - It's a phone - Use it, it WILL get scratches and it WILL get the odd knock if you're not careful. I always use mine naked and if you're careful and just use it normally you'll only ever pick up one or two scratches that you have to look in sunlight to see, over the two years of the contract.
