Did anyone get this so called update for the camera? My camera still looks the same to me. The camera is the worst I've seen for a 5megapixel. I guess this is proof that megapixels doesn't mean anything cause I had a 3.2megapixel blackberry that took pictures just like the Slide. Please let me know if you've heard anything about the update and if you have gotten it. Thanks.

Didnt know anything about an update for the camera, but I think the camera is great for what is it(better then the g1's for sure) To each his own i suppose.
Camera update?? Hmm... I agree though, the cam is great on mine. Make sure you tweak the settings (obviously) and clean the lens too. Some say it looks washed out, I say boost the color/saturation. Not sharp enough? Raise the sharpness. Factory settings are always horrible on any camera, phone or otherwise.

I wish we had HTC/dev release 720p for the slide. First the Nexus One got it from devs and it has a 5mp camera (most probably the same as the slide), and now HTC comes out with the g2 and desire z with 720p already with the phone on a 5mp camera. It has to be possible...

I might be wrong, but even though we have a 5 megapixel cam that doesn't mean we can record in 720p. I think the nexus ones camera and lens is more top notch than ours, but don't quote me on it. I could be wrong.

Recording 720p is not about the lens, it's about the speed at which the board and cpu can take the data and compress it and write it to flash all continuously. If the espresso/slide cpu isn't overclocked, it probably can't handle encoding a 720p stream fast enough.

Since the two processors are different ...
G2: MSM7230 at 800 MHz
N1: QSD8250 at 1,000 MHz
... and I know you shouldn't compare MHz unless they're the exact same chip... which one is better overall?
Also, disregarding clock speed, what chip is newer / better? Meaning if you underclock the N1 to 800MHz which one would be better?
I know there are benchmark programs out there for Android.
Anybody run one on their G2? How do they compare to N1?
Thanks,

Sweet... thanks.
From what I heard about the G2, before it came out was that it wasn't anything special and didn't offer anything over any other phone already out there.
So its up to par with N1 as far as speed goes.
It doesn't have a front facing camera like the Evo does.
How is the flash on the G2? I have seen the Droid's and the N1's flash and they're awesome.
I'll probably upgrade to G2 as soon as its rooted (permanently).

Well, the MSM7230 chipset is technologically superior due to it being manufactured with a 45nm process, versus the QSD8250 being manufactured with a 65nm process. It also contains the new Adreno 205 GPU, whereas the QSD8250 makes use of the Adreno 200 GPU.

whoa, how did u get quadrant to show the breackdown of each score bar in different colors?
ah figured it out
I tried 2 camera apps- camera zoom and hdr camera+,2 of the best camera apps on the market. Camera zoom offers an interesting feature of touching the screen to take picture, thus preventing oof pics,as mentioned in another thread. Hdr offers excellent color saturation, the hdr effect by itself doesn't offer anything special.
My opinion- Both camera apps lead to loss in detail or excessive graininess, picture quality is the best in the default app only,in terms of details and color fidelity. But I want the extra feature of color saturation. I want my pics to look bright and vivid like on the sgs and gs2.

Sent from my Galaxy Nexus
So here's to clarify:-
The difference in quality is not obvious in the 5mp shot, its when you zoom out on an object.
1.In that case, stock camera app is noticeably better at capturing all the details.
2. Camera Zoom has a lot more options, i personally tend to never use them.
3.Stock camera app would be awesome if it had touch to shoot, it goes out of focus rather quickly, but that effect would not be obvious if you are in your room and shoot an object at a constant focal distance.
4. Here again, on 4.0.3 aokp(because thats what i use and love) stock camera first focuses then shoots on pressing the shutter, which gives pretty good pics, IMO, on par with camera zoom focus level.
5. My main gripe, is the color of the stock app. Its natural looking colors, perfect for most ppl, but I like my colors to be vibrant and saturated so that when i show my gallery to dumb ppl, they go "wooooow". HDR camera + gives nice saturated colors, thats what i would like in the stock camera, "saturate option". thats not there even in camera Zoom.
Unfortunately, there is little that can be done with the stock app. You could try changing the scene mode or the white balance and see if that gets you the desired effect. You could also use the editor built in to the gallery. Good luck.
Oh, and nice pics...corona and papa johns = one bad morning. Lol.

yea whr is it? Moreover I was referring to some devs working their magic on the stock camera app to add some more options.like saturation etc... colors, even though accurate, seem pretty dull here. Not bad, mind you, because it takes pics with high color accuracy, just that if it were more saturated, it would look better.

Actually with some software tweaks, it can possibly improve camera quality. The best way to tell the difference is to side load 4.2 and 4.1 camera apk and take a picture of the same thing under the same conditions and compare.
It's like saying, a apk made your phone faster? Software is just as important as hardware. They rely upon each other.

I've actually had a few devices where a SOFTWARE upgrade has made my camera better. Droid Incredible, upgrade unlocked 1080 recording. Nexus 7... upgrade unlocked 720p recording...
It happens.
Of course software can improve the camera performance. Like white balance, exposure and such. Probably not the noise in the images though unless you add noise reduction. I prefer noise rather than smudge though. But we got enough of both already.

I just went to a new rom, so I currently don't have the 4.2 camera.
From memory, the quality wasn't that different for me, but I'd really agree in saying software can improve the IQ. Most of my pics turn out too bright and hence wash out the colour, a simple edit and changing the highlight slider to darker makes the pictures look much better. I mean, if the camera did this itself better, the pictures would turn out much better by default. Wish the 4.2 had HDR as well.
How do you guys share the photo-spheres?

HDR is 100% software based. All it does is take multiple pictures with different exposures in quick succession (3, 5, etc.) and combines different parts of each image into a final HDR image. There are already a bunch of 3rd party camera apps available on the Play Store that offer HDR modes and they work just fine on the GNEX.
While the final images may look better on the N4 because of the better sensor/optics of its camera, and while these images may be saved a little faster because of its faster processor (but the GNEX is also working with smaller file sizes, so even the speed difference may be negligible at best), I see no reason to believe this would not be possible on the GNEX, especially since it has that zero-lag instant shutter.
If the GNEX is able to handle Photosphere, it should be able to handle HDR just fine.
I know this is unrelated to the original thread, but it's still somewhat related.
I can't view my 360 panoramas like a virtual room... just like a normal panorama.. I see the button on there, but I click it and it doesn't do anything. I can upload them to Gmail though and view them fine on there.. Any tips?

I haven't had any problems with it. I even tested the video recorder, and nothing was wrong with it. Even viewing spheres is fine. My only nit pick is the rotation lag.

Next, is the home screen. Looks the same except for the Weather Widget is updated with newer pictures and as you can see the menu text is bolder now. Which makes it look 100 times better.
Another cool thing about the weather widget is if you click on it, it will bring you to these next two screenshots. One gives you a Today forecast for Day and Night. The other will give you a 4 day forecast.
The messaging application looks a little different now, the text in the front message page is a little smaller and in the actual message page it gives you a time/date for every message.
Notification Bar looks the same but it now displays previews of the pictures and the Sprint logo disappears when you scroll it up and down and the little three bars on the bottom turn ICS blue when you click on it.
This is the biggest enhancement for Jelly Bean, Google Now. This displays sports scores, the current weather, and it even will display any tracking information if you have it in your Gmail and plane tickets or movie tickets also.
Lastly is the settings, the On/Off buttons are switches now and when you plug your device into the computer now, that page looks a little different and has pictures.
The pictures do it a little justice but until you really use it and mess with it and feel the buttery smooth transitions and movements. The text throughout the phone is bold now which makes it pop a little more. If you want to see anything let me know and I'll take more screenshots.

You'll probably get a little higher on Antutu if you run it plugged in.

Well ive quit my progress with this ... Sorry but the project i been workin on is worth it ... Maybe someone else can take a look and take over .....
The last 2-3 post showing everything working is from my project I been Working on .... Didn't mean to get them intertwind ...
I've downloaded and installed the moto x camera apk... Everything seems to work except flick wrist,HDR,slow mo... Haven't tried all of the options since HDR,slo-mo, is greyed out... U can hold the focus ring and take multiple shots in a row ....
My problem is it starts at 1x zoom... Can someone fix that issue with it ? I don't have the knowledge to do it ...
I got it from this thread and they deserve all the credit....

Looks awesome. Would u happen to know which line to edit in shellnuts script so it opens this camera instead of the stock one? And what would that line consist of. Thanks dude

I honestly have no idea which line does but when u install the mod it installs it as another camera so u get the camera you using know or u can choose the moto x .... Pictures taken from either camera app all goes to your original gallery....
To me get best of both worlds 1 gallery 2 camera options ....
I can still see the autofocus issue with the Moto X camera Try flashing the camera mods and then use the camera?

I noticed that but even the moto camera doesn't focus after I close it and reopen. Just like the aosp camera. That's why I need shellnuts script to open it.
Here it is with that mod flash and the script u suggested ... Is it me or did that script clean up the Motorola camera and do nothing for stock....
1st is Motorola
2nd is stock AOKP with mods also HDR enabled ....

Know here's with stock AOKP with script and mod and HDR shut off ....

Know that HDR is off I'm having hard time deciding if there is any difference between the two ...

Using the script with the Moto X camera is better, but still not quite focusing like it should >_< WHY IS THIS SUCH A HUGE ISSUE?! Lol I mean, I know the answer, but still... Lol.

to me it's not the pictures I take are just fine.. IMO... they are plenty good enough for me... in fact even with the funky camera this is still the best phone I've owned even the camera surpasses what I'm used to so for me is all thumbs up... lol
so installing this you get dual camera apps that play well together? wanting to try it just unclear on that one thing

To be honest, what I've noticed are that general landscape pictures look good, even without the mod. Its when you try to get close ups and focus in on objects, is when things get haywire.
