I tried 2 camera apps- camera zoom and hdr camera+,2 of the best camera apps on the market. Camera zoom offers an interesting feature of touching the screen to take picture, thus preventing oof pics,as mentioned in another thread. Hdr offers excellent color saturation, the hdr effect by itself doesn't offer anything special.
My opinion- Both camera apps lead to loss in detail or excessive graininess, picture quality is the best in the default app only,in terms of details and color fidelity. But I want the extra feature of color saturation. I want my pics to look bright and vivid like on the sgs and gs2.

So here's to clarify:-
The difference in quality is not obvious in the 5mp shot, its when you zoom out on an object.
1.In that case, stock camera app is noticeably better at capturing all the details.
2. Camera Zoom has a lot more options, i personally tend to never use them.
3.Stock camera app would be awesome if it had touch to shoot, it goes out of focus rather quickly, but that effect would not be obvious if you are in your room and shoot an object at a constant focal distance.
4. Here again, on 4.0.3 aokp(because thats what i use and love) stock camera first focuses then shoots on pressing the shutter, which gives pretty good pics, IMO, on par with camera zoom focus level.
5. My main gripe, is the color of the stock app. Its natural looking colors, perfect for most ppl, but I like my colors to be vibrant and saturated so that when i show my gallery to dumb ppl, they go "wooooow". HDR camera + gives nice saturated colors, thats what i would like in the stock camera, "saturate option". thats not there even in camera Zoom.
Unfortunately, there is little that can be done with the stock app. You could try changing the scene mode or the white balance and see if that gets you the desired effect. You could also use the editor built in to the gallery. Good luck.
Oh, and nice pics...corona and papa johns = one bad morning. Lol.

yea whr is it? Moreover I was referring to some devs working their magic on the stock camera app to add some more options.like saturation etc... colors, even though accurate, seem pretty dull here. Not bad, mind you, because it takes pics with high color accuracy, just that if it were more saturated, it would look better.

If we can get a full dump from a GSIII we can port it, assuming of course it doesn't require touchwiz libs/framework/etc.
Also have to get it to work with our front facing camera.

I think so too but otoh if working properly and efficiently it should save on the button usage and should save on a quicker screen off since screens are the battery munchers. And so far initial reviews say the gs3 is great on battery and many reviewers like the feature. If the gs3 had software buttons i would be an early adopter. Oh well. More nexus for me.

Not really. I've read somewhere that the way it works is that it snaps a pic with front camera just before the screen turns off and uses the same face detection the face unlock does.

Not to mention that it requires the sensors to stay active at all times, even when screen is off.
Basically, it uses the phone's gyroscope to detect how the phone is being held in order to keep the screen on. It's a very good app.

Actually with some software tweaks, it can possibly improve camera quality. The best way to tell the difference is to side load 4.2 and 4.1 camera apk and take a picture of the same thing under the same conditions and compare.
It's like saying, a apk made your phone faster? Software is just as important as hardware. They rely upon each other.
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using xda premium
I've actually had a few devices where a SOFTWARE upgrade has made my camera better. Droid Incredible, upgrade unlocked 1080 recording. Nexus 7... upgrade unlocked 720p recording...
It happens.
Of course software can improve the camera performance. Like white balance, exposure and such. Probably not the noise in the images though unless you add noise reduction. I prefer noise rather than smudge though. But we got enough of both already.

I just went to a new rom, so I currently don't have the 4.2 camera.
From memory, the quality wasn't that different for me, but I'd really agree in saying software can improve the IQ. Most of my pics turn out too bright and hence wash out the colour, a simple edit and changing the highlight slider to darker makes the pictures look much better. I mean, if the camera did this itself better, the pictures would turn out much better by default. Wish the 4.2 had HDR as well.
How do you guys share the photo-spheres?

HDR is 100% software based. All it does is take multiple pictures with different exposures in quick succession (3, 5, etc.) and combines different parts of each image into a final HDR image. There are already a bunch of 3rd party camera apps available on the Play Store that offer HDR modes and they work just fine on the GNEX.
While the final images may look better on the N4 because of the better sensor/optics of its camera, and while these images may be saved a little faster because of its faster processor (but the GNEX is also working with smaller file sizes, so even the speed difference may be negligible at best), I see no reason to believe this would not be possible on the GNEX, especially since it has that zero-lag instant shutter.
If the GNEX is able to handle Photosphere, it should be able to handle HDR just fine.
I know this is unrelated to the original thread, but it's still somewhat related.
I can't view my 360 panoramas like a virtual room... just like a normal panorama.. I see the button on there, but I click it and it doesn't do anything. I can upload them to Gmail though and view them fine on there.. Any tips?

I haven't had any problems with it. I even tested the video recorder, and nothing was wrong with it. Even viewing spheres is fine. My only nit pick is the rotation lag.
What problems were you reading? Maybe people are flashing newer or older versions.

So today I realized a neat trick with the camera. As all of you know some camera feutures wont allow the use of flash, a way to kinda overcome that is using the assistive light widget. Get the widget on the home screen, tap it go to camera and bam! You got an assistive light for your camera.

Macro, shots are for taking very close up shot of your pics. Usually for flowers, things you what to get the phone right up to. I wouldn't recommend zooming in to much. To be honest, what I've noticed are that general landscape pictures look good, even without the mod. Its when you try to get close ups and focus in on objects, is when things get haywire.

So I'm ASSUMING that the N900T has the same camera universally. So, if that's so has anyone successfully activated 4k recording on the T-Mobile version?

It's in the video settings when you're in the camera app. It's a little choppy on playback if you move around too fast, but it still looks amazing.

Your playback is in 1080p. Regardless if you record in 4K. Our screens are only 1920x1080p. You'd only benefit and truly see the difference if you playback on an actual 4K resolution screen.

I can see 4K on myyy 1080p. You just have to have good eyes to see the subpixels. And the downsampling makes it better too! /sarcasm

make sure to get a class 10 if you plan on recording 4k
Could some one with root post the APK, or titanium backup copy of the 4K capable camera? Thank you.

IMO, 60fps recording is much better right now than 4K recording unless you actually have a 4K TV.

played with some 4k video a few days ago. if you record 4k in low light and convert it to 1080 on a computer you eliminate a ton of the noise.
other than that im with you on the 60fps. Would love to see if this could go higher than 60fps.

I would like a copy of the stock 4K capable camera because my stock camera on my LG G2 is not 4K capable, but the hardware between our phones are very similar, so I wanted to give it a shot.

Lol that's not gonna work. First of all it's the touch wiz camera and only works on touchwiz. And second, you have to have the hardware (the actual camera)

The video is not even 1/2k (half k) but it should be YouTube's fault...
