Why are they called ROMs? - Droid Incredible Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Just a question I don't know the answer to.
I know ROM stands for read-only memory, but I can delete and write to parts of ROMs, no?
Haha, does anyone know why?

Why do we park on a driveway and drive on a parkway? Why is it called "rush hour" when your car barely moves?
I think with out root privilege and S-OFF you are not meant to write to these parts of memory.

I think that it stems from the days before phones has flash memory, they had eeprom(electronically eraseable & programmable read only memory) memory. Now that almost all memory is flash now, its a little different.
Sent from my ADR6300 using XDA App

It's called a driveway because you drive through it to get to your garage, it wasn't meant for parking.
And a parkway originates from the 50s, when people would use "parkways" to go out into the parks to have a day in the outdoors with a picnic and whatnot.
It's called rush hour because everyone rushes onto the street to go home, hence all the traffic.

ClubMz's Extreme Cell Phone Spy Gear 2010 Platinum???

Ok, so my wife claims to have installed ClubMz's Extreme Cell Phone Spy Gear 2010 Platinum on her laptop and cell. She claims to have been watching me for the last 5 months. I know I havent done anything wrong but find this creepy. I'd rather save the fight and not get upset or call her a crazy %$^ch. Is this legit? And how can I block her from spying on me? lol
looking at their website i would say it's not going to be very reliable software.
i've always found that if they need flashy graphics and they SCREAM at you what they do, it's probably crap.
here's a better question. if your wife is saying she has it on her laptop...why not look at her laptop and see what it does/doesn't do?
Use your own laptop and phone?
EDIT: So wait, how does this even work? Do both devices need Bluetooth enabled to get the data or what? And it doesn't look like you put it on your computer, so I'm not sure what she means by that. Looks to me like you'll have to have Bluetooth enabled on your phone and be close enough to hers for it to get the data. I wonder if just turning it off on your end will hinder her efforts.

I think you're right. It may only install on the laptop then you transfer it somehow to your phone. From what I read, it does require bt. But mine is always off. Did it only require bt to be enabled to install some hidden spyware on my phone? Maybe she turned bt on my phone while I was sleeping to get what she needed? I have no clue.

Also if your employer gets wind that wifey is snooping via your phone (this software uses weak encryption) that you can lose your job, and be liable for any private corporate information that could get leaked. So....

Ok here goes..
I've been using HTC devices since the days of the SPV E100.
Every phone I've had has been Windows mobile based.
Now I am thinking about getting WM7 phone but the hardware is just not quite right.
I managed to get a hold and play with a demo Mozart.
At the moment The mozart is fave because it fits snug in my palm and the camera is 8MP. But that is all. There are some bits I want before jumping in.
Processor ...Check
8 mp Camera ... check
Wifi N.. Check
Micro sd.....Errr if you feel like voiding your warranty
Hdmi out... Nope
FM in/out... Nope
OK now for question time.
Has anyone got a conversion chart to show how much space 1 min/ 5 min /10 mins of 720 video takes up on a Mozart?
Does WM7 switch to a removable storage mode like the old windows?

I can only answer the last question .
wp7 sees all the storage as one big drive (rom+sd) so lets say "512 MB rom + 16GB sd = 16.5GB of storage (we don't know where it is stored )
and remember ! , you can not swap the sd card and use the DATA on it after swapping.
fm in/out? do you mean an fm receiver? if so, it has one. but no, it cannot act as an fm transmitter.
Cheers

Yes it does but for some reason it only works with uneven frequencies. 105,1 105,3 105,5 etc. Unless I'm missing something obvious.
i got it working for frequency 103.2, so i don't think there is an issue with it.

This seems counter intuitive. Is there any legitimate reason for this?
ms simply does not allow swapping memory cards for "security reasons" and would like you to use their cloud. which provides you with 25GB(?) of additional storage. for that matter there is simply no need for more storage unless you want to beat the upcoming iPhone 5 with 64GB build in. who needs that?
the internal storag card is somehow "glued" to the device. so even if you find it its just not worth the hassle. for a big upgrade it might be worth to void the warranty, but not for a daily swapping.

WEll Im not a fan of the cloud, I prefer direct control over my own data. I feel the cloud is bad for data security and integrity. I do not see how a removable storage device is less secure than some random servers that could be located anywhere. And with my current phone I have the option to use "The Cloud" or my Sd cards or both. Why would anyone think it is beneficial for their options to be reduced? Why should I put my personal data into the hands of a complete stranger?
the argument behind the use of cloud over local storage is similar to the one of android vs windows phone.
basically, the reason they made the microSD cards not "hot swappable" is so that they can encrypt the whole card. this way, noone can just come around and take the card out of the phone and get all of it's contents.
in terms of cloud vs local storage and which is more secure, really, neither can be said to be completely secure if you're on the internet. that includes your phone. if your phone uses data, then it's not secure, that includes bluetooth. pretty much everything is hackable. though that is the worst case scenario. in terms of putting your information in strangers hands, you merely being on the internet is doing that. in the hands of google, microsoft, and any other service that tracks cookies, browser patterns, etc. so really, your information is everywhere.
Security is more than just whether your data is secure from hackers. It also keeps app developers' data safe from you. MS knows that they need good apps to sell the platform, and to get devs to put forth the effort they have to show that the platform won't allow the ease of piracy that Android users have become accustomed to. Yes, it is a tradeoff, and it might not be for you, but I do not see that changing anytime soon, so if you wanna go WP7, that's what you're looking at.
I have to admit that the idea really did not appeal to me in theory when I first heard it. No one likes the idea of giving up a freedom. However, after using my Focus for a while, I have found that, for me at least, it is far outweighed by the positive changes.
That being said, the last thing this forum needs is yet another thread devolving into a nonremovable storage bashing session vs. WP7 fanboy argument, so I'm just gonna suggest that you really honestly try out 7 before nailing it over a point or two. It is a much larger change from 6.5 than can be really explained by a quick bullet point list, and really deserves to be approached with a fresh mindset. If it works out, awesome. If it doesn't, then that's just where you're at.

That was posted in the loose hinge video thread in the General section. I was unaware there was a memory problem, but after a short Googling on the subject, turns out we only get 1.2GB of the promised 4GB.
Yes, I know the breakdown, 300MB for formatting, 1GB for FroYo, 1GB for future upgrades (or at least that's what the forums I all read said). However, after reading that statement from ihateusernames, I want to know.
Did they fix it? Do we get more memory now? I've got 1.09GB of free space on mine, and I've got really nothing more than a Chuck Norris facts app, all the Google apps updated, Angry Birds, ADW Launcher (the free one), ChompSMS, Beautiful Widgets and Feedr. So the usage would look about right for my phone starting with 1.2GB.
I've got the loose hinge problem as well, but instead of *****ing about it like so many people, I was going to use the method outlined in the G2/DZ General section, take it apart, stretch the springs and put it back. It sounds more fun than getting a replacement.
However, if they fixed the memory problem too, I'm gonna do what this guy is doing and just send the phone back. Two birds with one stone...hmm...there's a reason why that's a good saying.
No, there is no fix because nothing is wrong. That's what your going to hear. You probably just read an old post.

Oh well, this just means I get to see the guts of my phone and fix my hinge
Thank you!
No, it's not true, the memory is how it is. There is a 4 GB chip in there but it's setup from the factory as 2.2 GB of storage. This is exactly the same on both the G2 and the Desire Z (just that T-Mobile's advertising of the G2 was highly misleading).

My biggest problem is that I just don't see the reason not to have it. Other than the iPhone, pretty much every smartphone has had some kind of memory slot for years until recently. Having it is cheap and takes up very little space. Why limit users? Why not allow them flexibility?

Why complicate things with an extra slot? Why slow things down with external storage? Why? It's not only easier for developers, but for consumers too. You never have to worry...its just there. You don't have to go "Well, VZW only gave me a 2GB SD lets go spend another $30 on a 64GB"...its just there and most consumers need that cause most consumers are, sorry, dumb.

I'm sorry, but that post is just dumb. (Not you, your post.) How can it complicate things?(*That's a dumb statement.*) I think even the older generation knows what a sdcard is and how to use it in a mobile device, camera, etc.. so I know the younger generation knows. What can be complicated to some, is hooking up your phone up to the computer and browsing through all of those folders trying to find where their pictures are saved. (*Most wouldn't look in the DCIM folder.*) Why slow things down? I spent an extra hour or so at the Verizon store waiting for them to transfer all of my pics, songs, etc...off of my sdcard, when it could have taken me 2 minutes to the transfer the sdcard from my old phone to this one. (*Again, dumb statement.*) I guarantee you most people are using the same 16/32 sdcard they've had from a previous phone and they either sell or put the new one they get with a new phone away for storage. Not to mention how APPS2SD has saved plenty of people space on their internal memory and whatever other benefits that comes from that. Sorry, but I just can't let you call me a dumb consumer because I want options. If you ask me, a dumb consumer is one who doesn't want more options.
Guys, there really is no reason to debate or argue this. Either you support it or you don't. If you do, sign the petition, like the page, and post something positive.
If you don't, please just leave well enough alone (like I said in the original post).
You could just buy a phone that does have an SD card slot. They don't have a gun to your head. Google is moving away from expandable storage.
I don't think Google plan to add micro SD cards in the future as we head towards a cloud based storage system in the future, so if you want an SD card, you'll most likely have to buy a non nexus device, this rant won't do anything much
I don't know if it's that people don't read or if my expectations are just to high. *sigh*

No negativity here just opinion. I think manufactures should just include more built in storage. Flash memory is way faster than sdcards and I think that if there more of it, space would stop being an issue.

The only problem with this is that, the more the storage, the more the price of the phone. Imagine how much a 64 GB phone or tablet is going to be. I'm pretty sure at some point buying a 64GB sdcard would be cheaper. Plus, when you spend more money on that new 64 GB device that you want, now you have to spend all of that time saving it to the cloud or transferring it from the old device to the new one. Now when your space in the clouds begin to get to full, you now have to spend a monthly/yearly fee for more space. Sorry, but I don't see the benefits.

For all you lazy folks this is the main part
A pair of researchers at Erlangen University in Germany have shown that a trick known as a “cold boot attack” can read data from a Samsung Galaxy Nexus running the latest version of Android, even when the phone is protected by a PIN and has its storage disk encrypted. They call their technique FROST, or Forensic Recovery of Scrambled Telephones. By simply cooling the phone to around five degrees Fahrenheit and quickly rebooting it, Tilo Mueller and Michael Spreitzenbarth found they could read data from its memory including images, emails and web browsing history, as well as the key that in some cases allows them to decrypt the phone’s encrypted storage disk.

They wont find much worth having on mine.. a bunch of memes, a handful of music discogs, my contacts, a few sms messages that I haven't deleted yet.
I understand that these exploits have to be talked about, but at the same time they're sometimes talked about in such detail, anyone can easily replicate it.
On the other hand, I don't think the common thief would know about this security exploit. They'd probably just sell it as is.

That's not an exploit nor really news. They could have pointed out any electronic device with RAM chips, this technique is used for years for PCs.
But writing about mobile + Android + security is linkbaity enough for 2013.
Yeah, and how many people are gonna be like OMG I just got this phone now I gotta get the temp down so I can hax it?
Not really an exploit like said above.
