Sprint Service Center - GPS Question - EVO 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I have a story to tell you all, and i would appreciate any help / advice that you could give me. (specially the forum members that work at sprint).
About 2 months ago, my EVO screen died. It went completely blank. If i would reboot the phone it would work for seconds, and then it would go back to black. So (since i'm always running custom roms - it's almost an addiction to be trying out a rom a week) I managed to plug it to my PC, restored HTC's stock rom; and took it to the closest service center. Within minutes, the tech (right infront of me) replaced the screen, didnt event payed much attention to the software and handed the phone back to me working and ready.
PERFECT.. a couple of days later, i realized that my GPS was not working. It would get stuck in waiting for GPS (in the navigation app) and then in maps. sometimes it would give me my location precise to 100 feet, or sometimes precise to 3000 feet, and place me in the general area, but not on the road. I figured; they probably messed up the GPS antenna, or something.
BUT, before i could take it back; my screen died again. BUT this time, it died all the way. I could not see a thing, so i took the phone as it was to sprint, and told them about both problems.
They replaced the screen again; but gave me a handwritten paper, that the GPS was not working cause i was running "custom software".
So now, i have my EVO that i love; but with non working GPS. My question is: Does sprint keep a record of what they found on that service call, and if i flash it to stock, will they not support the GPS problem? OR, do i maybe use some of the tutorials on ifixit.com and take it apart, to see if maybe i can see the problem.. OR, last option, do i take the blue pill, call azurion, and pay the deductible for a new EVO?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
ED!

i do not work for sprint but i do know they can put the information onto you account. I have had them place service information about repairs on the account. Whether this tech did or not is another question. Unless you can find someone to look it up and tell you you wont know. my opinion restore back to stock and then try if they say you had custom software or they cant then go the azurion route

gps failure

Got my desire a few days ago and the gps does not work. Fails to get a fix, gps icon flashes away forever but never fixes. Completely useless. Phoned HTC several times, some technical help people at HTC say there is a problem none are working, which is consistent with the fact a number of friends who all have the same problem with their desires and yet other HTC technical help say their is no problem but mine is broke and to return it for replacement. Anyone got any thoughts
I've been quite impressed with the GPS, fast lock and holds it. A steady 12 satellites even indoors. Certainly had no problem at all with it, UK Vodafone (although it may be a generic rom, no branding at all) handset.
are you standing outside and have a mobile network active to help with the positioning?
Sent from my HTC Desire using the XDA mobile application powered by Tapatalk
Something's wrong with your unit as the GPS lock (flashing to solid) is seriously fast, like 5-10 seconds outdoors, and 15-20 seconds indoors for me.
Have you tried downloading GPS Status from the market? That can help by indicating if you are tracking satellites etc.
im outside
I'm outside testing my gps, environmental factors can also be ruled out as iPhone 3gs was tested at the dame time and locations and worked flawlessly so its definitely my phone
Same problem here. GPS status shows sometimes up to 6 satellites but never get a lock.
How do you actually see the number of satellites?
I was using Copilot, you can check number of satellites and signal strength in the GPS settings while the app is running.

There are a number of free apps in the market. GPS Status, GPS Test,...
I'm also experiencing poor/none GPS service and lock.
It's been suggessted that I reboot, sit still (not moving in car) outside with a clear view of sky, and then allow up-to 10min for phone to get GPS lock and download/store empherical(sp?) gps data. From then it should get a fast lock.
Going to try that today.
I picked up my desire yesterday from T-Life Hay st Perth. I did stuff all with it all day cos i was at work. I got home, ran market, updated maps and went outside waiting for a fix. After 45 minutes I gave up. I downloaded GPS Test and it only found 1 satellite, with a weak signal, located half way between AU & US (judging by the display in GPS Test, which i understand is only so good!).
I started reading threads on it and tried everything. Hard reset, downgraded maps, nothing worked. So I charged it all night and then this morning when i woke up i took the battery out. 30 minutes later i put the battery back in, went outside and tried to fix, 15 minutes in.. nothing.
So i went to T-Life this morning on my way to work with the desire box ready to hand it back and ask for a new one. The girl and guy were a bit dumbfounded when i explained my prob, the chick went out back to talk to "the tech" and came back about 5 or 6 minutes later and told me:
- They're aware of the issue, EVERYONE is having it
- There will be a software update shortly (i asked when)
- It will be "sometime after the long weekend"
So I thanked her and left, after all if EVERYONE is having the problem, it surely can't be hardware.
Now, how many of you with Telstra desires actually have a GPS that can hold a location? from what i read this problem is ULTRA common.
Thanks Ruxton, saves me a trip to the T-Life store in Sydney today.
Just need to be patient then... not my strong side
I'd still call or drop in at least to make your issue known. If everyone accepts it's "going to be fixed" it'll take forever. Where as if everyone lets them know they have a problem, it'll probably gain higher priority to be fixed.

i suppose this marks my return to XDA devs after quite a while (if only it was under happier circumstances lol)
but yes, i too am having issues with the GPS. As I mentioned in the thread over on whirlpool, i went back to Telstra and replaced the HTC Desire unit yesterday and am still having the same issue with the new unit.
I also called HTC's customer support line, where I was told that they were aware of the issue and their senior engineers were working on it, but he didn't have any more information other than that.
I'll also swing back into the Telstra store later on as well. I guess the more of us that complain to them, the more they'll realise it needs to be fixed!
GPS on the Desire is perfect here.. get a lock, even indoors in seconds, very very impressed
HTC told me the same
htc have been giving me different stories every day! One day it is "your desire has a useless gps chip take it back for a replacement" then I'll call again within minutes and get another saying "gps is not yet working on desire models, we will be sending out a fix" I'd love to know which is the true statement! Seems pointless my taking the unit back if they are all the same. But reading through this forum it seems people do have desires with properly working gps. On hunting round the web ive not been convinced people who say their gps is working are not in fact confusing triangulation with gps. This forum will not have that confusion so I must conclude mine is a faulty unit and return for replacement. Would have been nice, after taking the plunge with htc from apple had the customer service not been unhelpful, vague and contradictory. T Mobile were no better, when I called them the guy claimed if I can get on the internet with wifi then my gps chip must be working!
have used the latest version of Google Maps with Navigation and no problem in the UK with the Orange Badged Desire handset. Sounds like a dodgy handset, can you get it swapped out under warranty?
Yes
Yes it can be swapped under warranty but that could well be a wasted excercise if in fact its a fault awaiting a fix, then the new handset is likely to have the fault also.

[Q] I dropped my phone, messed up the screen, what to do?

So today I dropped my poor Evo.. for the first time ever. I rushed home to get some things for a surprise birthday party, and I guess as I exited I dropped the phone. I freak out whenever my phone isn't in my pocket, but I guess I was in such a hurry I didn't notice this for thirty minutes.. once I got to the party. I freaked out, drove back, saw it laying there in the middle of the street where I had first parked.. picked it up to find that it still worked, but was dusty and the screen was busted severely. My assumption was that a car went over it going fast enough that the force didn't completely break it, which may be a crazy thought. But regardless, the screen is now messed up. What should I do? I carry the $7 monthly insurance with Sprint, I've had it since my Touch Pro days. BUT, my evo is rooted and flashed with a new rom. What steps should I take now to get a replacement phone? I know there are steps outlined somewhere around here, I had them saved, but I remember seeing a post about someone still getting screwed over even after flashing to a nonrooted rom. So what do I do, and how much will it cost me? All help greatly appreciated.
PS: I posted hours ago expecting to have responses by now, but I guess with the downtime my post was lost
There's a how to unroot your evo in two steps thread if you're really paranoid. You could probably just bring it to the sprint repair store turned off, pay the deductible, and get a replacement right there.
If the phone is that messed up, no one is even going to look at it ... just get it replaced. Either head to the Sprint store as suggested above, or go on-line and contact Assurion. Don't worry about be rooted, etc ... it won't matter.

[Q] Evo randomly reboots to white screen and vibrates 5 times?

Can anybody help me out with this? I've already searched but haven't found a clear cut answer on what to do.
For a while, I've had random events that cause my HTC Evo (running the latest stable release of CM7) cause my phone to suddenly show the "HTC Evo 4G" white screen, then go black and vibrate 5 times while having the green LED on, which never lets me do anything until I pull the battery out and start it up again. It used to only happen when I did specific things, like whenever I tried using Google Goggles at the store (and had to go through all the trouble of disassembling my 3 layer protective case just to pull the battery again). It even happened again yesterday when I was trying to use Goggles on a specific item, but it has happened before in other events since then, like when I was browsing my phone's running applications menu, or even one time when I was simply browsing the internet on it.
I've been taking steps to try and fix it, but I think it's been getting worse. I tried downloading CM7 and Google Apps again to flash on the phone to see if it fixed anything. I tried doing this again, but clearing the data and cache this time. I tried flashing the latest CM Recovery (since I stayed with 2.5.x.x for as long as I could remember), and I'm pretty sure it's gotten worse. There's points where I get to the CM7 boot animation and the phone then does the white screen and five vibrates again, and just a moment ago when I was sure I finally solved it after clearing data and cache, while filling out my Google account info, it happened again and I was greeted once again by that horrendous white screen and the five vibrates.
Now I don't know what to do. I still have S-OFF, but I have no plans to unroot. Can anybody think of suggestions? I've already tried Googling and haven't gotten anything useful enough to help me so far.
EDIT: I guessed it would help if I was a bit more specific. This started happening about two or three weeks ago after I tried using Goggles for the first time in ages. Since then, I've had this issue coming back over and over. It also puzzles me how Goggles usually works completely fine when I'm at home but causes the phone to go black and vibrates 5 times whenever I'm at a store.
Also, right now, I re-downloaded CM7 and Gapps from the CM mirrors instead of simply reusing the ones that ClockworkMod had saved for me already. I hope this somehow makes a difference.
Also, last edit, if I manage to solve this somehow, I'm going to definitely post the answer to what I did in case anybody else out there is having the same issue.
EDIT 2: Welp, re-downloading CM7 and flashing again didn't do anything to fix the problem. I'm going to try another ROM to see if the problem persists. I really want to stay with CM7, though.
Did you wipe everything? Cache and so on ect....?
I wiped everything and I'm still having the issue.
I also caved and I'm going to unroot because the retards over at the Sprint repair center refuse to look at it otherwise. I got my hopes up after hearing on places like XDA or the CM forums about how Sprint didn't care about rooted phones, but I guess the Sprint guys in my area do. I'm currently downloading unrevoked forever son and PC36IMG right now.
I'm just hoping I can get a new Evo after this, because there's a chance I could lose root forever after doing this. But I'm so certain it's a hardware problem.

Why would you lose root "for ever"?
Just curious ....

I had the same exact issue with my Evo over the past 2 weeks. But I never use Goggles and run MIUI pretty much exclusively. I was never able to fix it and it just got worse. I unrooted and still have the same problems.
I notice it happens on 3g data, I can't remember when it happened on wifi.
I am selling mine back to Sprint tmrw and using my upgrade to get the Nexus S for$50. Then hoping the Evo 3D comes out within 30 days.

I took it back to Sprint today, and after being treated like a second class citizen for rooting over and over, they managed to somehow fix the random reboots, but have initiated the OTA update for me. Now I'm sitting here with it and it's asking if I should install it now or later.
I'm hesitant because I tried to unroot earlier, and since then, the technician at Sprint said that it wasn't really unrooted or something (I remembered using unrevoked forever last year when I rooted). I'm scared that maybe I'll lose my chance at being able to root again if I accept the update or not. I'm also scared if I won't be able to get full root from here.
EDIT: SON OF A *****. I can't believe this. I applied the OTA update like a good boy and everything, and then the phone starts boot looping randomly again. This is the last straw. I'm going to go back to Sprint tomorrow and be more in-your-face about this problem. I'm through letting them treat me like **** just because I rooted my phone once.
I have a similar problem.....
My problem is random. My phone will go into constant reboot mode until I pull the battery out for 10 minutes. Just pulling the battery and putting it back does not help.
I also noticed that I am losing GPS signal occasionally. It is random too. The GPS will come on and work for about 5 minutes then just lock up. I have to reboot to get it working again and there is no rhyme or reason as to when it will stick (or wont) or how long it will last. It may work for 3 days and then not work a lick for 3 days.
The local Sprint store replaced the back red portion of my phone (the part with the camera lens and kickstand) stating it was an GPS antenna problem. I got 30 secs outside the store and tried the GPS....same problem. I went back into the store and showed them and they tried to convince me I needed AGPS on as well. AGPS always worked but is not as accurate as the satellite GPS. The repair shop refused to do more or order a replacement. I just got scammed out of $35.00 cause nothing is fixed.
I got so pissed, I called Sprint. They were terrific. They refunded the $35.00 the repair center charged me of the repair (the rip-off repair) and agreed to send a replacement phone. Awaiting arrival of the replacement but they are back ordered...so, maybe, I'll get a new phone instead of a refurb.
Long story short...I don't know what is causing your reboots. Mine could not be solved by software changes. My phone was rock solid until around a month ago. Then the GPS dropouts and reboots became more frequent until they became unlivable. I think you have a bad device and would seek replacement.
I had the same problem with mine about a month ago. It happened once about a month before that and then a month ago started happening a lot. I finally narrowed it down to how "hot" it was (body temperature in this case). So basically any time that I was in the car it happened. I was able to unroot (you have to make sure you to s-off on) and put a stock rom on it, and take it in with it happening. They took it for an hour and said they had not seen any issues. I finally convinced them and the replaced it with a refurb. I'm okay as long as it works, but it makes me wonder what happened. When I first got it I used fresh for about a week and then went to CM and was on it the rest of the time. I used an SBC kernel starting around the same time and am thinking maybe that had something to do with it... Just as a precaution I'm staying away from SBC kernels.
If I were you I would just go to the store and get a replacement if you can otherwise if it's like mine you won't be able to count on it working...
Good luck

[Q] Unbelievable - the LCD cracked!!

Unreal, can't believe this has happened. Bottom right hand side of my phone. Glass is fine and everything works but the key component that lets you see everything.. ruined.
Of course it happened two days before im supposed to fly off on holiday
This is a nightmare, need to now get some answers/fixes whatever.
Who will repair this thing? T-mobile my network provider or HTC? Do I even have a leg to stand on with any of this? Surely my consumer rights have to come into play, all i did was put it for charge and checked it ten minutes later to find it had cracked. If the battery or something has caused it to overheat surely it's their fault?
Can i leave it for two weeks while i go on holiday?
If i leave it for a whole two weeks will someone like the companies i mentioned refuse to fix it because i left it? With all that's going on i would really prefer to leave it till i get back. It won't get worse so this would be the best option for me.
My head is all over the place at the moment - What are my next steps now that i've found the LCD has cracked?
Just to add, i got the phone in November so it hasn't been a year yet.
I would really really, really appreciate any sort of help on this, even the slightest bit!
Sorry to hear, it's an awful feeling when such things happen just at the wrong time.
From other users experience and my you send to htc, which have an awful service center.. A mate and an xda member had his phone with them for a month before they decided to send him a new one, that's after number of phone calls and a believe a letter and from my experience then sent me my phone back in the same state as it was send.
Others have better experience with the network provider. And it shouldn't be a problem at all leaving it 2 weeks, I say that I confidence.
Sent from my Desire HD using XDA
Very reassuring, cheers!
So if HTC tend to give you a new phone then my next step after coming back will be to grab every last bit of data off the thing. Good thing apps are linked to your Gmail account.
I might just see what my network provider says so it gets done quicker. It would be good to have a chance of getting a new phone though, haha.
To be honest I have three ways of sorting this, get it fixed with HTC, get it fixed with t-mobile or try and get it fixed with mobiles.co.uk the place I got it from. Essentially carphone warehouse.
I always prefer going the official route i.e HTC and I may even wait a while for it. Anyway I have to call them first and see what they say.
Again, very helpful cheers.
Send it to htc. The others will forward it to them anyway. The repair centre has vastly improved recently. They changed locations a while ago which slowed everything down but it's much better now. They also send a courier to collect the device the next day (after reporting) so you could send it away now and have it repaired when you return. Hope this helps.
Sent from my Motorola Startac running Atari 2600 software!
Will they just repair it? I had a HD2 a while back and my screen cracked sent it off to HTC for repair they rang me couple days later and told me that accidental damage was not covered by warranty. I asked for it back as they were quoting silly prices. They may try to fob you off with this and try to say it your fault.
Ricey
If the repair centre CAN repair it, they definitely will (that is one of their main performance indicators, repair vs replace). Yes, send it to them direct, cut out the middle man.
If there is no obvious impact that caused the crack, ie it's not your fault, I'd recommend you research heat (?) as a contributing factor and take them down that path, so that they don't spend too much time on the diagnostics. Doesn't sound normal to me, but they may have prior experience.
My only experience of a HTC repair centre was excellent, although it was 2 years ago and for a WM Prophet . They were in front of where I was working at the time and they took 2 days to fix, not replace the phone.
Oh, and install Titanium Backup, and do a full backup to your card.
Cheers for the advice!
Will definitely get in touch with HTC before anyone else. It's got to be a heat issue but what if they refuse? Can i bring my consumer rights into it? The crack looks like someone has pushed on it from behind but there is no outside damage and i was sitting in the room while it was charging; nobody touched it. It was hot when i picked it up but it always gets hot around the back when i charge it. It's definitely a heat issue but god knows what they say.
Hope i can just explain that and they will help.
Haven't rooted my phone so cant get Titanium backup but tbh i might as well root and backup everything thenrestore it all to default.

[Q] How to contact HTC? - not dupe

I tried:
- Facebook -> no effect
- Twitter -> no use, only used for maketing, they don't answer
- Email -> The site (both local and global English) just throws me to the main page, and nothing happens. I get no mail that I submitted my message, I get no message on the website that my message was sent OK. I get nothing. Just throws me to the main page and that's it.
Tried both pages as I said, no effect.
There is also a phone contact, but I doubt I could reach anyone there.
The story:
I could use my phone and was satisfied with it (HOX) for half a year. Then it started dying, and spent the rest in service.
Been using my old Nokia ever since. (What a joke...)
Now I'm really, really fed up. Yes, I waited patiently weeks, months, read the fake/forged repair documents and whatnot...
But it's just useless. There is no effect whatsoever.
Even if they list that they changed the moon or... whatever, they did not. They spit lies in your face, in the form of a huge list on an A4 paper.
So I want to reach someone who could help me.
Story:
- Phone first had difficulties waking up in any weather/heat condition.
- After a while phone could not wake up in cold temperatures at all. (Not outside cold, just below 15C.)
- Then it started having glitching screen, and the lock-up issue did not go away.
- I changed the SIM cards and returned the phone.
Took them weeks to get it fixed, and when I got it back, I could not even turn it back on.
Asked the service that "wtf?!" and he said "you are right"... Just what the hell?
What the f. did the service people doing in there? Like... "well, let's write a lot of things on a list and that will surely fix it!"
So he took the phone back and the phone was in service again.
Fast forward weeks again, the phone is back.
- I didn't want to waste time with contacts transfer (it's an ass. HTC provides no tools, software support is outright ****.)
- So I sat down and I had glitches in the menu when scrolling. As I said I did not use the phone prior, because either I use one phone, or the other phone.
- And after a few minutes of use, when the chip started heating up (tegra), the phone locked up and the screen went off.
tl;dr: the phone been through many repairs and it's A BRICK. A PERFECT PAPER-WEIGHT.
If you are thinking of buying a HTC device: Don't do it man. It sucks.
The software you get is a joke (on PC), it does not help. MyPhoneExplorer is like the only way to KINDA transfer data, but even that fails. I'm a programmer, I spent days on fixing problems regarding this. I don't even know how a normal person could transfer their contact list.
And this is just one problem. As you can see build quality/quality and warranty is the other thing.
My entire county is crying on the local HTC wall that their phones are plagued with problems and no one cares about them. I want A PHONE after I paid so much money.
