gps failure - Desire General

Got my desire a few days ago and the gps does not work. Fails to get a fix, gps icon flashes away forever but never fixes. Completely useless. Phoned HTC several times, some technical help people at HTC say there is a problem none are working, which is consistent with the fact a number of friends who all have the same problem with their desires and yet other HTC technical help say their is no problem but mine is broke and to return it for replacement. Anyone got any thoughts

I've been quite impressed with the GPS, fast lock and holds it. A steady 12 satellites even indoors. Certainly had no problem at all with it, UK Vodafone (although it may be a generic rom, no branding at all) handset.

are you standing outside and have a mobile network active to help with the positioning?
Sent from my HTC Desire using the XDA mobile application powered by Tapatalk

Something's wrong with your unit as the GPS lock (flashing to solid) is seriously fast, like 5-10 seconds outdoors, and 15-20 seconds indoors for me.
Have you tried downloading GPS Status from the market? That can help by indicating if you are tracking satellites etc.

im outside
I'm outside testing my gps, environmental factors can also be ruled out as iPhone 3gs was tested at the dame time and locations and worked flawlessly so its definitely my phone

Same problem here. GPS status shows sometimes up to 6 satellites but never get a lock.

How do you actually see the number of satellites?

I was using Copilot, you can check number of satellites and signal strength in the GPS settings while the app is running.

There are a number of free apps in the market. GPS Status, GPS Test,...

I'm also experiencing poor/none GPS service and lock.
It's been suggessted that I reboot, sit still (not moving in car) outside with a clear view of sky, and then allow up-to 10min for phone to get GPS lock and download/store empherical(sp?) gps data. From then it should get a fast lock.
Going to try that today.

I picked up my desire yesterday from T-Life Hay st Perth. I did stuff all with it all day cos i was at work. I got home, ran market, updated maps and went outside waiting for a fix. After 45 minutes I gave up. I downloaded GPS Test and it only found 1 satellite, with a weak signal, located half way between AU & US (judging by the display in GPS Test, which i understand is only so good!).
I started reading threads on it and tried everything. Hard reset, downgraded maps, nothing worked. So I charged it all night and then this morning when i woke up i took the battery out. 30 minutes later i put the battery back in, went outside and tried to fix, 15 minutes in.. nothing.
So i went to T-Life this morning on my way to work with the desire box ready to hand it back and ask for a new one. The girl and guy were a bit dumbfounded when i explained my prob, the chick went out back to talk to "the tech" and came back about 5 or 6 minutes later and told me:
- They're aware of the issue, EVERYONE is having it
- There will be a software update shortly (i asked when)
- It will be "sometime after the long weekend"
So I thanked her and left, after all if EVERYONE is having the problem, it surely can't be hardware.
Now, how many of you with Telstra desires actually have a GPS that can hold a location? from what i read this problem is ULTRA common.

Thanks Ruxton, saves me a trip to the T-Life store in Sydney today.
Just need to be patient then... not my strong side

I'd still call or drop in at least to make your issue known. If everyone accepts it's "going to be fixed" it'll take forever. Where as if everyone lets them know they have a problem, it'll probably gain higher priority to be fixed.

i suppose this marks my return to XDA devs after quite a while (if only it was under happier circumstances lol)
but yes, i too am having issues with the GPS. As I mentioned in the thread over on whirlpool, i went back to Telstra and replaced the HTC Desire unit yesterday and am still having the same issue with the new unit.
I also called HTC's customer support line, where I was told that they were aware of the issue and their senior engineers were working on it, but he didn't have any more information other than that.
I'll also swing back into the Telstra store later on as well. I guess the more of us that complain to them, the more they'll realise it needs to be fixed!

GPS on the Desire is perfect here.. get a lock, even indoors in seconds, very very impressed

HTC told me the same
htc have been giving me different stories every day! One day it is "your desire has a useless gps chip take it back for a replacement" then I'll call again within minutes and get another saying "gps is not yet working on desire models, we will be sending out a fix" I'd love to know which is the true statement! Seems pointless my taking the unit back if they are all the same. But reading through this forum it seems people do have desires with properly working gps. On hunting round the web ive not been convinced people who say their gps is working are not in fact confusing triangulation with gps. This forum will not have that confusion so I must conclude mine is a faulty unit and return for replacement. Would have been nice, after taking the plunge with htc from apple had the customer service not been unhelpful, vague and contradictory. T Mobile were no better, when I called them the guy claimed if I can get on the internet with wifi then my gps chip must be working!

have used the latest version of Google Maps with Navigation and no problem in the UK with the Orange Badged Desire handset. Sounds like a dodgy handset, can you get it swapped out under warranty?

Yes
Yes it can be swapped under warranty but that could well be a wasted excercise if in fact its a fault awaiting a fix, then the new handset is likely to have the fault also.

Desperately lost and at wits end

OK, since Sunday when the clocks went forward my SatNav has stopped working. It has worked flawlessly for the past year and I suspect my GPS reciever has stopped working. However, when I start up TomTom Navigator it tells me it is "waiting for a valid GPS signal"
I have already:
Soft reset my device
Hard reset my device
Reinstalled TomTom Nav
waited for over an hour for it to aquire the satellites
downloaded the latest Epherimis info from QuickGPS
What next?
I have to say that Google maps does not seem to find any satellites either.
I am at my wits end and without my SatNav I dont know how to get back to normal sanity

flash radio 1.14
flash topix 3.5.6
Hmm, by the fact that your location stats you're in Cambridge UK I'd say you've got a bit of an issue as the clocks don't change until 28th March!!!
Sorry, guys
I should have stated two more things
1. I am currentlu=y using Topix 3.5.6
with Radio 1.13
And I have been in the USA for the past month. I have tried all combinations of clock i.e.
putting clock back an hour
unchecking daylight saving in synchrotime so the time is -5GMT
By the way US clock went forward on 14/3/2010
as stated before googlemaps no longer finds satellites either.
Can anybody tell me if the radio for GPS is the same chip as all the other radio's or are they separate chips (seems to me they should all be on the same chip)
Updating your radio updates all radio functions (phone/wifi/gps/bluetooth etc).
I'm in the UK too and using radio 1.17 with no problems at all.
gonna flash stock and see if that works, always did before so should now. If not then I will know my GPS radio is toast!
will this work with a bluetooth gps unit by the way?
its been about 2 weeks now since my first post in this thread and nothing I have tried has fixed my GPS. My phone is over a year old now so I dont think its under warranty any longer. Do you guys think I can get it exchanged under my insurance in the UK (I pay something like £26 a qtr for insurance from CPW) or should I just hold tight and wait for my upgrade in September and use a bluetooth GPS receiver in the meantime?
I don't want to shell out for a new GPS since I already have maps for Europe, UK and north America that I spent over £200 on.
Thanks for all you help so far even though I found no solution so far. :-(
why not claim the faulty phone if youre sure its def a hardware fault.
sell the replacement
buy what u want

not sure thats legal
course its legal
you have an insured phone that is faulty.
they replace it. thats the point of insurance.
then you can do what you want.
if one day you dont want that phone anymore, just sell it

HTC Desire FOTA update 1.21.405.2 PROBLEMS

Hi everyone,
Latest Desire update has ben bringin a lot of problems to a lot of people. Apparently Wi-fi is not working properly, missing apps in the market which are already installed on the phone, battery issues....to name few. This affects branded and non branded phones...as far as I know.
I already contacted HTC and Vodafone (because in this case my update came thru Vodafone with a different firmware number but in fact it's exaclty same update) and they are sending me back and forth to each other. Bad service... Both companies are not willing to help at this moment.
A good example are ADW Launcher and LauncherPro. Both launcher can't be found in the Market anymore (check comments on developer's websites). People are downloading apks from their websites directly. Also QuickSettings is not to be found anywhere.
Wi-fi is not working for some of us.
And some people mentioned that battery life has dramatically improved/got worse.
WHAT'S HAPPENING?!?!?!?!
Has anyone experienced similar problems??? And better one....does anyone has a solution? Preferably without having to root your phone.
Quite a few problems here already mate
Endless problems. My phone will now loose it's connection to Orange. I have to reboot the phone to get it back. Sometimes it takes 3 or 4 reboots. Switching to Airplane mode only works sometimes, but usually results in my phone then telling me I do not have a SIM card inserted! Poor. Every time this happens, Wavesecure thinks someone has swapped my SIM out, and locks the phone up. Had to remove wavesecure (which is actually ridiculously easy so I wont be putting it back on) and I miss most of my calls.
Factory reset my phone in anticipation of what I knew HTC support would say. Did not put on any apps, left it as factory reset, all default settings, did not set google sync up. 7 hours later...no signal. SIM card works just fine in every other handset I've tried.
Phone is going back to HTC on Monday. If it returns in the same messed up state, i'll be looking at getting it rooted and having a proper radio and customr 2.2 ROM installed. I decided against rooting to avoid any bugs/issues. Seems that it's the likes of XDA and MoDaCo devs who know what they are doing more than HTC do. But I am new to Android. Lesson learnt.
I've had about 19 phones since 1998, and this is by far the most expensive, and the first one that has struggled with actually being a phone. Pathetic. HTC you'd better shine with your customer support. I have two friends with HTCs on pre-order on the strength of this phone. Mess this up and they'll cancel their orders and I can't blame them.
Motorolla anyone? Can you make and recieve calls on them? Yes? Hmmmm.......
I have updated my Desire which has not been altered in anyway and it now has a nifty text count next to the persons name whom the conversation is to. However my Desire now has to load to conversation and texts every time instead of previously just popping up. It also lags when i send a text when it updates the conversation. Is there any way round this as the phone was perfect until this why fix what was not broken
Has anyone had problems with their GPS since updating? Mine wont work at all now :-(
Erm.... this is a little embarrassing but I feel I need to own up to prevent misleading anyone. As mentioned in my earlier post in this thread, I have arranged with HTC customer support to send my Desire back for repair. They pick it up Monday.
I bought a cheap £10 phone to keep me going. It arrived this morning. I put the SIM card in and powered up the phone.
"No SIM card instered" was the message it greeted me with. After numerous power-up and power downs, and some SIM card hoakee-coakee, it finally recognised the SIM card......then dropped the signal to Orange. EXACTLY what my HTC Desire did.
Doh.
I had tried the SIM card in another phone (my girlfriends Blackberry) when the problems first started and it had worked straight away. But the SIM card seems to be random in it's failures. Should have tested more rigorously.
Sorry guys but in my instance it seems I have simply a faulty SIM card. The first one I have ever had go wrong in 12 years, but there you go. I was too fast to blame Android/HTC.
Weird. I have none of these issues.
My WiFi works fine.
I don't know about missing apps, my phone came preloaded with 1.21.405.2
Also, my battery is AMAZING. Right now it's on 70% While it's not been charged for 10h 40m 33s. And that is with 3G and quite some instant messaging.
And I just searched the market for ADW Launcher and LauncherPro. Could find them both.
Hi,
I updated my desire yesterday and since then i cannot send texts and constantly seem to be on 'limited' service or a very weak signal. i am on 02 as are other members of the household who are not experiencing any problems.
I've tried the quick fix of putting it in airplane mode but makes no difference what-so-ever.

Good luck with HTC's crappy repair centre. Mine's been in three times and they've sent it back once with dust under the screen, and once with a scratch -- every time taking longer than a week.
Still having problems here-the signal is loads better today but still cannot send or recieve texts...the odd one will get through but thats after its been sat retrying for half an hour.
Can make and recieve calls no problem.
Have also noticed the display is very slow to respond on a swipe, sometimes takes several attempts to move between homescreens.
I wish I'd not bothered with the update...if it ain't broke.....

Sprint Service Center - GPS Question

I have a story to tell you all, and i would appreciate any help / advice that you could give me. (specially the forum members that work at sprint).
About 2 months ago, my EVO screen died. It went completely blank. If i would reboot the phone it would work for seconds, and then it would go back to black. So (since i'm always running custom roms - it's almost an addiction to be trying out a rom a week) I managed to plug it to my PC, restored HTC's stock rom; and took it to the closest service center. Within minutes, the tech (right infront of me) replaced the screen, didnt event payed much attention to the software and handed the phone back to me working and ready.
PERFECT.. a couple of days later, i realized that my GPS was not working. It would get stuck in waiting for GPS (in the navigation app) and then in maps. sometimes it would give me my location precise to 100 feet, or sometimes precise to 3000 feet, and place me in the general area, but not on the road. I figured; they probably messed up the GPS antenna, or something.
BUT, before i could take it back; my screen died again. BUT this time, it died all the way. I could not see a thing, so i took the phone as it was to sprint, and told them about both problems.
They replaced the screen again; but gave me a handwritten paper, that the GPS was not working cause i was running "custom software".
So now, i have my EVO that i love; but with non working GPS. My question is: Does sprint keep a record of what they found on that service call, and if i flash it to stock, will they not support the GPS problem? OR, do i maybe use some of the tutorials on ifixit.com and take it apart, to see if maybe i can see the problem.. OR, last option, do i take the blue pill, call azurion, and pay the deductible for a new EVO?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
ED!
i do not work for sprint but i do know they can put the information onto you account. I have had them place service information about repairs on the account. Whether this tech did or not is another question. Unless you can find someone to look it up and tell you you wont know. my opinion restore back to stock and then try if they say you had custom software or they cant then go the azurion route

p600 wifi turning off on of on off on....

Ok this started last night, tablet has been working flawlessly for the last 6 months or more.
What happened was, I wasn't able to use the Internet. Just wasn't working. And every 20 seconds or so it would flash up at the bottom of the screen "connected to (my router)".
So I turned wifi off and on, which usually fixed connection issues, but didn't help. I also restarted router, even though my computer and my phone isn't having any issues.
So then I went to the wifi settings screen to see if there was any way to reset networks. What I saw was this:
If i turn wifi toggle on and watch the screen, it would scan for networks, find the list... Couple seconds pass... Then the toggle would switch itself off and back on! And then it would start looking and finding networks again, and then off and on, and etc etc.
I have tried a factory reset and cache reset.
I have also downloaded the 4.4.2 stock rom and installed using odin for a totally new install.
Still does it.
Any suggestions? Seems very strange. It's under warranty but it seems like an odd hardware fault, seems more like software but I dunno.
Help me xda, you're my only hope.
I've been searching the Internet all day trying to find someone else havin this problem... But I seem to be the only one. And noone seems to have any suggestions.
At the moment I'm having to consider a warranty dispute, but that means however many days/weeks without the tablet which I use on a daily basis.
Not ideal Samsung.

Hey. I had the EXACT same problem. Even made a video of it and showed it to the service point personell. Turning on off on again and again, it also displays in the settings the switch just switches itself without any action of mine. It was a hardware defect. send it in and get a new one, better than being annoyed by it. Mine did it on a 5-10sec interval length...

Yeh mines probably every 5-10 seconds...
So this is definitly a hardware fault? In which case I'll have to get in touch with john lewis and hope they will do an exchange in store. If it involves having to send it off to samsung and waiting for it..
Anyway thanks for replying to the question, shame it wasn't better news haha!

yeah sorry to be the one to tell you this is a faulty device but it seems like this unit ain't free of errors and there quality control is somewhat sketchy.
Which android version are you running? I am asking because I run kitkat and also have relatively ****ty battery life. I use it for university so I have the screen on and write notes during lectures. Usually it lasted 7-8hours but for about a week or two it now only lasts 4-5 hours of screen time which is really ****ty.
I read somewhere that this might be a motherboard issue and if it is it might be somewhat corellated to our wifi problem. In my case they replaced the wifi module and gave me back my "old" device but this is having bad battery life so I am thinking about sending it in (again). I did however root so I would have to make use of the warranty provided by the seller, not samsung itself, since my knox is tripped.
(in Germany the sellers also must provide 6months - 2 years of warranty and there was a judgement in Europe that rooting must not have any influence on wether your device still is under warranty or not. sadly this only applies to the warranty provided by the seller, not the manufacturer)
Is your BT on and are you connected to a 2.4 GHZ network?
If so, turn off BT
I get random WiFi disconnects and reconnects from 2.4 GHZ networks when BT is on but not connected. Though, Ive never noticed the wifi switch going off and on.
I am running 4.4.2 or whatever, kitkat anyway.
Bluetooth is off, I never use it on my tablet. I dunno what network type I'm running, might be N or might be B/G, but whatever it is it what it has been for months as I havent changed any router settings lately.
I have restarted the router twice already in case this was a network problem, but the network wouldn't cause the wifi to toggle off and on, it would just cause disconnects etc. Least I assume so. I may try this just in case but like I said the network type hasn't changed lately
John Lewis are saying they won't exchange it, it will have to be sent off to Samsung for "repair". Meaning I'll probably get sent back a refurbished second hand one with a dodgy light bleed screen, as I expect they have hundreds of those lying around now.
Oh and it'll be up to 28 days. For a premium and expensive device that's less than 6 months old this just isn't good enough.

I had mine replaced as well but dont remember wether I got a new one or just my old one repaired... should have written down the IMEI I guess :-/
you're from Bristol, don't the EU rights apply there? If so your retailer should be obliged to replace or repair the device.

Anyways my replacement was done through Samsung and it took 6 days. But then again idk differences between UK and Germany...

[Q] 2 Stock HTC One M8's compasses unresponsive after 4.4.3 OTA

am I just astoundingly unlucky or is there a problem ! My first M8 (new last week on a 2 yr contract from Vodafone via carphonewarehouse) arrives through the post from CFW warehouse and I happily use it for a week...i apply all the updates, all is good. Then I go to use a nav app on a walk and find it's not turning. googlemaps the same, no compass apps are working either. I return it to a CPW store on Monday and swap it for a new one. Googlemaps looks ok instore so I walk away.
That day at home I start playing and find the compass needs constant calibration so I suspect a problem and log a call with HTC. That night, I accept the 4.4.3 OTA update and immediately following that, the compass now locks up as it did with the first one.
Logged the extra info with HTC and they took me through a factory reset, cache wipe, safe mode...still same problem.
THe compass will occasionally rotate on first opening googlemaps but within seconds will 'lock' up and refuse to move unless you navigate away from the app and back again..at which point it works a few seconds then locks up again.
Anyone else got a stock M8 experiencing the same problem ? can't be just me surely ! It wasn't until this M8 that I even had the need to calibrate the compass and I've had loads of HTC's in the past..
Ant.
Hi Ant,
I have exactly the same issue. No amount of 'resetting' will fix it. The compass is off by 90 degrees and then freezes completely after a few seconds. I've only noticed this as I write 'Metal Detector' apps for Android and couldn't figure out why nothing was working properly on my new M8. The magnetics on X, Y and Z are completely screwed up, see my post here if you're bored http://www.basic4ppc.com/android/fo...applications-using-the-magnetic-sensor.45170/
Coincidentally, I also got my phone last week from the Carphone Warehouse as well...
Chris
---------- Post added at 04:20 PM ---------- Previous post was at 03:55 PM ----------
Also I've just ran the Hall-Sensor Test using HTC's inbuilt test function. If you type *#*#3424#*#* into the phone does it fail the test also?
My hall sensor seems ok on this one...I was using a dotview case on the first unit and decided not to use it on this unit until I knew what the problem was as I was suspecting the magnet in the dotview could have been putting the compass out. It's possibly worth you (and anyone with the same problem) raising a ticket with HTC. I did it via the live chat on their website and they were very good (although you'd need to set aside time to go through the whole factory reset / wipe cache / safe mode diagnosis before they'll escalate the issue).
as with anything like this...the more people that have the issue and raise it the better but it's only you and me at present ! I also logged a call with Vodafone who said I had the option of returning it today (the last day of my 14 day cooling off period) for a replacement or different model but I said I'd like to keep it for now but wanted them to log the issue. If it's a hardware issue, we have a 2 yr HTC warranty..if it's firmware, then it'll get fixed anyway so I'd rather keep it than mess about with a different phone.....however I am annoyed because a month or so ago I vowed never to go HTC again having had 5 One X's replaced over 2 years (screen creak, faulty wifi antena - the squeeze test (had this twice), faulty radio antena draining battery), and here I am again...
Ant.
I'm using the freebee case that came with the phone. Does the compass still freeze with your replacement then?
I had the same woes with my One X but I keep returning back to HTC each time
Chris
The replacement needed regular compass recalibration...I noticed it only because I was specifically looking for a problem. It was fine all day, just needed calibrating all the time...then I noticed the 4.4.3 update notification so thought I'd accept it to see if that fixed the problem...then the compass started to freeze up completely and has been like that ever since.
The first unit I had I didn't notice any problems until the first time I USed the compass on a walk..that was a week in, and I'd already applied the 4.4.3 update..I imagine i would have had the same calibration issues had I used the compass before I'd applied 4.4.3.
Cheers
Ant.
I updated my phone to 4.4.3 within minutes of stepping outside the shop so no idea of it's behaviour before hand. The Carphone Warehouse has a 28 day windows of opportunity to replace a faulty handset. After that period it technically has to be sent away to HTC for repair/replacement. The 14 day 'rule' is the cooling off period relating to your contract (i.e. if you suddenly you discover you have no phone signal at home when the operator claimed you should have etc).
I'm getting mine replaced in a few days. A friend of mine who works at the CPW is going to see if the replacement phone is likely to be of the same delivered batch to the central warehouse in a hope of possibly identifiying a dodgy batch..
Just to keep this thread updated as well, my replacement M8 which came with 4.4.3 preinstalled this time still has the issue of the compass freezing after a few seconds.
All magnetics readings on X, Y and Z axis are zero.

had the same problem. it's the sensor_hub.img, htc screwed it up somehow. don't know, what's wrong exactly, but flashing 3.x firmware only, which contains new radio and sensorhub, fixed it for me. everything works again, beside gps... just don't get a fix, neither in sense nor in aosp based roms. sometimes one sat, sometimes two, but never full fix. damn...
Some of my friends use M8 didn't have the issues, but there's one had the same issue, didn't know why....
But the navigation is alright, only the digital compass will point the wrong direction,
my friend had contacted the HTC call center, and HTC already knew it and will enhance the digital-compass function.
I think it's software issue, but not everybody will come across it.

unfortunately it IS software issue, sure it worked just fine. then the updates came and now...
Maybe this is isolated to your carrier?
I have an AT&T M8 that's been bootloader unlocked and S-OFF'd, currently running the 3.28.401.6 firmware, and I have never had a single issue with the magnet sensor, even using a dot-view case.

Not Vodafone specific as there's some guys on another forum on Verizon with the same issue. Looking at my version, I have HBOOT-3.18.0.0000 and kernel 3.4.0-ge224610

Is Vodafone GSM or CDMA?
I also got the problem on 4.4.3..
sesnor stuck on 0 data..
can someone confirm the problem fixed on 3.28.401.6 OTA?
hope its not hardware.. thank you..
for me it did, at least partially, which means the following:
gps still is not working. this is on gpe & slimkat, sense shows the same.
btw, vodafone should be gsm.
I contacted UK HTC support today regarding my ticket and was told they are aware of a compass problem with ALL M8's following the last update and this will be fixed in the next firmware release due mid October 'so anytime now' . So don't hold your breath...but at least confirmed by HTC that this is a firmware issue that will get resolved.
I'm not sure what is different about my phone, but the compass is working just fine. I recently re-ran the Developer Edition RUU and let it up take OTA updates to 2.22.1540.4. Other than having to calibrate it in GPS Status, I haven't had any issues. For giggles, I took out my old Motorola Electrify, calibrated its compass, and the two were within a degree or so of each other. (which, given the hardware, seems reasonable)
my stock M8 bought a month ago took the OTA update and ended up with 2.22.401.5 (in the UK). so maybe your revision doesn't have the same issue ? I'm still a bit unconvinced to be honest. For HTC to be including a fix in a release that's already going out they must have known about the issue ages ago to be able to fix and test ready for this release. I raise a ticket a week or so ago and HTC support don't know anything about a problem....either they're rushing in a fix or tried to keep the problem a secret....or haven't fixed it at all...
does someone know, if there ARE different revisions of our m8...? haven't informed myself til now about that, maybe someone already knows the answer?
jshamlet, is your gps working? do you get a fix in gps status and tool box? btw, gps essentials is a very nice app, too

Well that was interesting. I just took my phone out to a nearby field, turned the GPS on (which I normally leave off to save battery), and the compass went wacky. I was able to recalibrate it, but it started jerking around a bit, as if it weren't updating very fast. The GPS, however, locked on to 12-14 satellites and got a solid fix. Even in my office, it is able to see 9 and get a fix.
What is odd is that the compass was pretty spot on until I turned the GPS on, and it seemed fairly stable. The minute I turned the GPS on, the compass started acting up.
