My phone has been acting terribly. The home screen is basically blank, except for the top and bottom soft buttons. I seem to be able to access all my programs. I cannot access any of my contacts though. When I tap contacts it goes to the contacts screen but there are none there.
Is there another way for me to access my contacts, so that I can write them down and save them before I hard reset?
Hard resetting will delete them, correct?
I have total commander installed, and can access that.
thanks
Use PIM backup to backup the contacts to sd card and restore afterwards

download one of these and back eveything up.... pim back up (backs your contacts, texts and what not to your sd card where you can then restore back to your phone after you hard reset)
microsoft myphone... very cool. Download it and run it. You log in using your windows live account and it backs it up to the "cloud" You can access all your contacts and calendar events, texts, photos, videos, documents etc etc on the internet on a dedicated website. It can back up your phone every day if you want it to automatically. It can even use your location to find the phone if it gets lost.. well to an extent. Restoring is as easy as reinstalling the program after you hard reset and running the restore mode.
Microsoft outlook... This is the most common I think. Use Microsoft outlook and back up your contacts and what not. Connect your phone and "Active sync" it so it backs everything up. After you hard reset, re connect your phone and re-sync all the data. Depending on your carrier I think most carriers provide a trial of this program on the installation cd you got with the phone if you don't already have outlook installed on your computer. You also need to have "Windows Mobile Device Center" or whatever windows XP uses if you still use XP.. again those can be found online free or on the cd you got when you bought the phone.
Do a little reading on all of those.
They're all really straight forward.
awesome! microsoft myphone got it all....
thank you much
hopefully a hard reset gets this phone back on track now....

This is a culmination of my previous threads. I've realised I'm not going to get an answer to each of my current problems so I'm going to have to hard reset and start from scratch. Which is just what I needed.
Summary of my problems:
- Speed dial numbers tell me the number doesn't exist, but then calls it anyway
- Can't add new speed dial numbers
- Can't add new contacts full stop
- MSN doesn't work
- Can't sync contacts (or anything for that matter)
So I am going to hard reset - but my problem is I need a way to back up my contacts, I don't want to be manually typing in dozens upon dozens of names and numbers. I have tried PPCPimBackup, but this doesn't seem to back up those stored on my SIM (most of my contacts are on my SIM). I can't find a way to move my contacts to the phone from the SIM - "Save to contacts" in SIM Manager tells me it was successfully added, but it wasn't - there is no Outlook version of that contact.
What can I do about this? Is there a way I can back up my contacts, bearing in mind that syncing doesn't seem to copy them onto my computer and PPCPimBackup only seems to back up Outlook contacts? I do have an SPB Backup of my PIM stuff from when I was on WM5, but that's what has caused this problem, trying to restore it. I have tried searching these forums for other ways to back them up but it's like finding a needle in a haystack. Is there a program that can read PIM.vol?
What on earth should I do? Or is physically writing down all my 100+ contacts then typing them in (and losing all my stored SMS) my only option?
Device: O2 XDA Orbit, as out of the box in July, then upgraded to WM6 with the O2 official thing.
Computer: Vista Ultimate x32, Outlook 2007.
Somebody correct me if I'm wrong but surly if your numbers are on your SIM they shouldn't be effected by a hard reset.
If your worried take the sim out before you try it??
hard reset won't remove anything from your SIM
I'm going to be upgrading my TP2 to another device soon (perhaps an HD2), and I'm wondering- what's the best method for backing up SMSes?
I've been using PIMBackup 2.8 for ROM flashes-- it restores all the messages, but the threading gets screwed up (all the other person's messages appear first, then all of mine).
Took a look at Sashimi, but it seems a bit complex just to backup/restore SMSes. Any other solutions?
(the SQLite data stores on the iPhone are so convenient -- SMSes in sms.db, contacts in AddressBook.db, etc., not that you even need to worry about them normally with the iTunes OS upgrade process)

It's free, automated, and you can you can even access your archived messages from a webpage, so you can just retain recent/current threads on your phone to avoid bogging your SMS module down.
Ah right, hadn't thought of that (MyPhone seems quite useless otherwise-- its contact/calendar sync seems incompatible with Outlook, Exchange, and even MS' own web offerings...).
Just it set up for SMSes, though... let's see if this works
i backup 3 ways before flashing a new rom.
1. PIMbackup, 2.PowerSMS, 3. Myphone.
WHy? i don't know but i use Myphone to restore them
Also to get them to thread properly go into your settings and set the sms threading option to classic (turn threading off). Soft reset, restore you messages, once all are restored then turn threading on and soft reset again.
Let the device site for a while (depending on how many txts your restoring) and they should be threaded properly.
Sometimes MyPhone rethreads them properly without doing this but sometimes it doesnt, i dont like to take chances and have the xml in my UC set the device to classic (unthreaded) message style, so i can just restore, enable threading then SR.
best of luck
I think I'm going to do a reset, but thought I would seek advice first before I go ahead and do it.
What steps should I take before resetting?
I've been having problems with my contacts with gmail, and how my phone doesn't appear to sync (ie I add a contact to me phone, and the new contact doesn't show up on gmail later when I check).
So, what should I do?
Get an app to backup any text messages, make a good note of home screen layouts so you can get em back how you want.
Apps that store any customisation on the phones memory are going to revert to defaults, anything that stores to SD should be OK.
The phone will remember things like custom background/wifi passwords as they're sync'd to the cloud.
contacts require relinking!!!!
I did a factory reset today and I had to re0link all my phone contacts to my facebook contacts manually (again like when I just got the phone) is there any app or other way to avoid that? not that I'm planning to reset my device very often but it'll be good to know.
If your contact names are the same on the phone and on Facebook, it figures it out for itself.
not all of them are, even the ones that ARE the same the phone doesnt link automatically nor suggests as links! I copied my contacts to my SD card but I dunno if I copy them from card again later would they be all sorted like they are now or should I do it again!
I'm sort of stabbing in the dark here, but my issue is this: When I open my received text messages, the peoples contacts that I have sync'ed with facebook should show their photo. This is how it worked when I first got my phone.
I have done a few factory resets since then, and yesterday loaded a new rom. I loaded my contacts that I had backed up to SD card.
For some strange reason ALL of my contacts have hiphens ( - ) in their phone numbers. I think this is causing some texts to not be delivered.
Also, when in the messages window, all of my contacts photos wont be displayed. But if I go to the people directory they are displayed fine.
Now, is there a way I can delete the cache or similar without factory resetting the rom?
I have rom manager, and I used this to reboot into recovery before loading a new rom. In there was options for deleting cache and things (to be honest I didn't know which was the correct one so I did them all before loading a new rom). Now when I go into rom manager it just loads a sign like this a!
so I cannot try that again.
Thanks for any help given!!
Why did you back up to memory card if they're going to be saved to the cloud via your Google account?
Otherwise I have no answer for your question.

I had all sorts of problems with the facebook integration.
The magor one I had was that the phone would automatically use the facebook phone number and not the one in the phone which was very annoying when people put fake numbers in their facebook profile or don't update for their new number and also all the numbers had a +44 on them which meant my phone wouldn't dial them at all!
My advice is remove your facebook account and see what happens. The try adding it again. If the problems persist then keep it removed. Life will be easier without your phone and facebook contacts being merged and updated all the time... trust me!
Phil
Thanks for your replies.
Regarding the backing up of contacts, does anyone recommend a GOOD FREE app for backing them up? I simply do not wish to use Google to back up my contacts. They are personal, and I would prefer to keep them on the phone. Google contacts is pointless to me.
If you would like Google contacts I have no say but I would rather not have my contacts spread out all over the place, with different versions etc...
It's going to take me forever to edit everyones phone number, and each time I flash a ROM I'll need to do it again..
Worst still, since flashing PaYs ROM the Google sync actually worked for the very first time since receiving the phone - So, now Google contacts has all of my contacts but the phone numbers have dashes is ( - ) which is wrong. Like the person above me, us in the UK have issues when dialing strange numbers!
Google contacts is fine, means you never have to worry about them being backed up as it's automatic...otherwise you've gotta sync them with yur email client on your PC which is hassle...I was a stickler for backing up to Outlook but now use Google...
The dashes come up after restoring contacts from the SD card...don't know why it does it but it can't be removed (another reason not to back up to sd card)
while in the htc people app, just press menu button then you can export your contacts to your sd card, which you can then later on import again.

Can you please explain the point of this post? Is that a French flag?

You asked for a way to back up your contacts without syncing them with google contacts, I provided you with a way to save them without having to use any app.
(it's the dutch flag, just made the World cup soccer finale)

Fair play, but it is this way of backing up contacts that is giving us the problems as per post #1 and this discussion
I have done a few factory resets since then, and yesterday loaded a new rom. I loaded my contacts that I had backed up to SD card.
For some strange reason ALL of my contacts have hiphens ( - ) in their phone numbers. I think this is causing some texts to not be delivered.

Congrats on the world cup. I have stopped paying attention since we lost.
sorry my bad, i'll let you guys get back at it
Try contact2sim
Limitation of course is the small sim memory for numbers only.
Astro file manager has some backup capabilities. HTC sync....

My AT&T HTC Tilt 2 is nearly a year old now, and I've recently run into a very irritating problem. Every time I try to use the "Update Now" feature (Contacts -> Updates and Events tab -> Menu -> Update Now) to update contacts' Facebook pictures and whatnot, the entire UI crashes and has to reload. No error messages or anything like that at all; the screen simply freezes for 15-30 seconds and the HTC Launching TouchFLO 3D screen comes up.
This issue has expanded to encompass any time I try to edit a contact (on that note, the "Link to Facebook account" button no longer does anything except cause TouchFLO to crash) or even open the Updates and Events tab.
I'm still using the same ROM that came with the phone (hard reset once or twice, so essentially the same thing), meaning Windows Mobile 6.5. Like I previously mentioned, I'm using the TouchFLO 3D UI (my attempt to update to the Sense UI went terribly).
Is there anything I can do to fix this, aside from hard resetting again? I've got a lot of contacts (more than will fit on my SIM card, in fact), and I'd really rather not go through all the steps of personalizing my phone for a third time if I don't have to. It'll be like November before I'm eligible for an upgrade with AT&T, so that's not a viable option right now, as much as I might like it to be.
Another side note: Using Windows Mobile Device Center, is there a way to basically copy all of my contacts and whatnot from my phone to my computer without adding in the contacts from Outlook? I'd really rather not deal with a bunch of random email addresses sitting in my phone's contact list. If this is possible, I may just try to use this method, hard reset, and then put the contacts back on the phone. The rest of the personalization isn't nearly as time-consuming as adding in another 80-ish contacts and then fixing the names of the ones I managed to fit onto the SIM card (because the SIM card saves them in the format of "Smith, John" in the last name field and nothing in the first name field...).
I've also got a 16GB microSD card, if that would be of any benefit in any of these endeavors.
Any and all help is appreciated! Thanks!
Any ideas?
Not sure about all your facebook issues, but a great, quick and easy program that can save and restore contacts anywhere (including your storage card, if you like) is PIM Backup:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=1189061&postcount=1
I use it all the time since I flash daily and I NEVER have any problems restoring my 200+ contacts using PIM Backup.
