My Desire has stopped going into landscape, Is there a way you can turn it off incase i accidentally did that. The only app i recently installed is LogMeIn.
Has anybody got any Ideas?
Have you checked if Settings -> Sound and display -> Display settings section -> Orientation is checked? If it is, uncheck it and then check it again. If it still doesn't work, reboot the phone and if it STILL doesn't work ... beats me...
Exactly what it was, thanks so much mate!
rebooting
Newbie question
When you say reboot do you mean factory reset?
No, i mean turn the phone off and then turn it on.
For example - hold the Power button on top, until a menu appears, choose power off. when it shuts down, power it on and that's a reboot.
Lol thought u meant hold down power press left tight up down square triangle etc etc
Well if you continue like that you'd do Desirality ... which would possibly brick your phone
// end offtopic
To keep it on topic - you can also take out the battery

I've managed to muller up my phone. I've been switching back and forth between ADW Launcher and HTC Sense for a little while.
Today, I was going through all my apps to make some space, and I cleared the data in HTC Sense. The next time I went home using Sense, it force-closed. Then for some stupid reason I thought it would be a good idea to check "use as default" for Sense, and now I just have a phone which constantly force-closes as it tries to go to home screen. Reboot makes no difference. I can't get past the force-close to clear default in HTC Sense.
My phone is not rooted. I think my only option now is to do a hard-reset, but how, if I can't get into settings? Need my phone up & running again asap. Would prefer not to have to reset it (therefore preserving all my apps, customisation) but am prepared to do anything at the moment.
Any advice, please?
I think if u turn it off, turn it on again and press the volume down button the select it from the menu does it, ive never done it before but i think thats it.
You could try booting into safe mode first.
With the phone off, hold down the menu button and power up the device. Keep holding down menu until the phone has completely booted up and you should be in safe mode (it will say "safe mode" in the bottom left corner of the home screen if it has worked.
If it boots into safe mode ok, chances are your problem is a widget on one of your home screens as safe mode will not load any 3rd party applications/widgets.
Failing that, you'll probably need to clear storage from fastboot as langers1 has suggested.
WORD OF WARNING - It seems that safe mode will nix any 3rd party widgets you have on your home screens. You will need to delete and re-add them.
Regards,
Dave
Thanks.
A quick Google search brought up the relevant info from HTC:
Performing a factory reset using phone buttons
If you cannot turn on your phone or access the phone settings, you can still perform a factory reset by using the buttons on the phone.
1. With the phone turned off, press and hold the VOLUME DOWN button, and then briefly press the POWER button.
2. Wait for the screen with the three Android images to appear, and then release the VOLUME DOWN button..
3. Press VOLUME DOWN to select CLEAR STORAGE, and then press POWER.
4. Press VOLUME UP to start the factory reset.
EDIT: Damn, I should've waited for your reply Dave - I've just reset the phone :-(
Never mind, at least it's working again
does anyone else's cwm jump 2 spaces at a time when tryin to select in item? its completely random and then sometimes when i press the menu button to select an item the recovery goes to sleep. pressing the menu brings it back up but since i cant use the menu button to select items i have to pull the battery
Strange and how do you get acces to the menu button in recovery mode. Or do you mean the power button.

when the power button puts the phone to sleep in CWR that means you accidentally disabled the Go Back option. You can cycle through the menu with the up button a few times and you will see a note about the Go Back option being enabled. Going the other way you will get a message about the Go Back option being disabled.
The overly sensitive buttons issue is being worked on. Someone is developing a CWR option that increases the font and greatly improves this situation. I'll try to find it and post back here. I don't think it's up to full speed yet though.
Good luck.
Could be a bad flash or the wrong cwm image. There's a toro and a magure. Make sure you have the right one. I sugest flash again.

First time it happened to me I almost had a stroke. I had just wiped everything(!!) and when I hit the power button and the screen went dark I really thought I had selected reboot without having a rom installed!! Sure was glad it turned out to be something simple.
Hey guys,
When I woke up today my phone had some serious issue.
I can turn the phone on and off with the power button, but when the phone is lit and I want to
lock the screen, the button does not work. I can hold it in and get to the power meny, but when
i just tap it, nothing happens...
Do any of you know why it occour? Havent done anything unusual...
Clearly the button works, because I can enter the Power meny...
/Thanks

are you trying to turn the screen off on lock screen? if so just double tap the screen
Is the phone stock or modded (rooted, custom ROM, etc.)?
Did you try to reboot device already?
Sent from HTC One m8, or maybe not anymore

Yes, the first thing I tried.
I'm not completely clear on the issue. If you just tap the power button while the screen is on, it should turn off the screen (which in turn also locks it). If holding the power button until you get the power menu, the choices should just be Power Off, Restart, and Airplane Mode. I don't think there is an option to lock screen on that menu on a stock ROM (and actually no custom ROMs that I know of).
Sorry for the delay on the answers.
It's not that i can't access the power menu, that works fine.
But if you want to lock your screen, you just tap the power buttom and that dosent work.
And I just found out that the screen NEVER shouts down!? It's always on.
When I reeboot the phone, the screen darkens, but all the icons on the desktop is visible and when i try
to tap the screen it acts like its off!?
Can't even think of whats wrong with this now.
The power buttom clearly works, but i can't lock or shout down the screen.
It's like its always on!?
I'm having this exact same issue.
My solution
Obviously this is much too late for the OP, but for anyone who might still stumble on this thread (it is still one of the top hits on Google for this issue), I got mine working again by rebooting the phone, after first disabling fast boot in the settings. (Settings > Power > Fast boot - I should note my phone is the HTC One Mini 2, but I assume the M8 isn't too different in this regard).
I had previously attempted rebooting from the power options (both restart and power off), but this hadn't fixed the problem.

The Fast boot option in Settings was removed from the M8 as of Lollipop.
Even when the M8 had this option, it did not effect "Restart" in power options. At least on the M8, restart is always a try restart; and Fast boot only affected the "power off" condition.
So I activated Universal Switch on S6 Edge to check it out, something went wrong in the settings (long story short, got a pop up while setting it up), now screen unresponsive.
It works, I just get this blue horizontal line scanning the screen and nothing else but the power button and home button works. Tried safe mode, no bueno. How can I disable US feature without resetting to factory or at least no data wipe (if possible!)?
Android 5.0, rooted with pingpong, no custom recovery, knox 0x0.
All help is appreciated.

Fixed!
The way I had fixed this is by holding down the power button, both up and down sound buttons, and the home button until it restarted. When the device turned back on it gave the option to turn the setting off. Hope it helped!

how to turn off universal switch
hit home button 3 times
Thanks alot
It worked buddy
It doesn't give me the option to turn it off
Hi,
I have been struggling with Universal Switch on a Samsung S5 Neo. I switched it on, but was never able to switch it off again.
These are findings so far:
-> Did a factory reset using "Sound Up", "Home" and "Power" button simultaneous.
-> The device comes back and wants to configure itself again.
-> I restored my settings from Google, but this immediately brought back "Universal Switch"
-> Factory Reset again and configured the device, but told Google that I want to use it as a "New Device".
-> Now I can use my device in a proper way.
-> In Google Play Store I find all my Apps which were linked to my account and reinstalled them and I am back in business again.
-> Took me half a day to sort this out.
The programmer who designed and programmed this should be hung and shot and poisoned, because this is absolute Crapware.
Hope this helps for all the others who are suffering.
You can also push the home button three times and it should turn it off.
thank u ur the best
Ok, so i have exactly the same problem except my home button doesn't work
Anyone one know how to sort this without having to take it in to a store?
I was faced with this problem before and looked everywhere and couldnt find a fix. This was a while ago. So I dont remember what I did to clear it. I was cleaning off the screen and touched the home button as I was wiping it off and the problem began again.... I just came across your comment because all the others failed. I pressed the home button 3 times quickly and the blue lines stopped scrolling. In addition, I went over the accessibility and I turned off the "Universal Switch" option as much as the option allows. I hate this function. I do not use it or need it (for my needs). I hope I can remember what to do next time this happens. I swore to myself I would remember last time, but apparently that wasnt a guarantee. This time, I will write it down and put is somewhere I know I will find it next time I see these nefarious blue lines scrolling. Hopefully I wont see it again since I disabled it more than it was to begin with. Thank you ever so for commenting. You saved me a lot of frustration!
great fix

It happens to me too, have you solved this problem? Please tell me what to do im freaking out right now
me too @Alifanasya
same issue
it works with OTG cable + mouse
A few days ago, my HTC One M8 came up with a little box on the screen saying "to restart the phone, Press the power button and the volume down button for 10 secs". I had not done anything to the phone so i went to swipe it away and it would not. I could use any apps or panels under the message but the box with the message stayed there.
Then another panel came up with the "shut down, restart and airplane mode" when i did not even press the power button to get to that panel. It would then keep switching between the power saver screen (blank screen) then back to the "airplane mode" box randomly. And the power button becomes hyper sensitive like its a touch button rather than a press button.
Ive tried to factory reset the phone and clear out the cache but to no avail. I thought it might have been a virus...managed to put a virus checker on but found nothing.
Phone is stock and nothing changed on it. Had it for over a year now with no probs
Android version = 6.0
HTC Sense = 7.0
Software = 6.12.401.4
Please help...or is the phone knackered?
Thx in advance
Sounds like your power button is malfunctioning. Not a whole lot you can do, except maybe cleaning around the button, to see if some debris or residue is making it "stick". A more extreme measure, might be to take apart the phone and clean around the button. But such an invasive measure might not be worthwhile (and may do more harm than good), as the problem may be with the electronic components themselves.
