are you trying to turn the screen off on lock screen? if so just double tap the screen

Is the phone stock or modded (rooted, custom ROM, etc.)?

Did you try to reboot device already?
Sent from HTC One m8, or maybe not anymore

Yes, the first thing I tried.

I'm not completely clear on the issue. If you just tap the power button while the screen is on, it should turn off the screen (which in turn also locks it). If holding the power button until you get the power menu, the choices should just be Power Off, Restart, and Airplane Mode. I don't think there is an option to lock screen on that menu on a stock ROM (and actually no custom ROMs that I know of).

Sorry for the delay on the answers.
It's not that i can't access the power menu, that works fine.
But if you want to lock your screen, you just tap the power buttom and that dosent work.
And I just found out that the screen NEVER shouts down!? It's always on.
When I reeboot the phone, the screen darkens, but all the icons on the desktop is visible and when i try
to tap the screen it acts like its off!?
Can't even think of whats wrong with this now.
The power buttom clearly works, but i can't lock or shout down the screen.
It's like its always on!?

I'm having this exact same issue.

My solution
Obviously this is much too late for the OP, but for anyone who might still stumble on this thread (it is still one of the top hits on Google for this issue), I got mine working again by rebooting the phone, after first disabling fast boot in the settings. (Settings > Power > Fast boot - I should note my phone is the HTC One Mini 2, but I assume the M8 isn't too different in this regard).
I had previously attempted rebooting from the power options (both restart and power off), but this hadn't fixed the problem.

The Fast boot option in Settings was removed from the M8 as of Lollipop.
Even when the M8 had this option, it did not effect "Restart" in power options. At least on the M8, restart is always a try restart; and Fast boot only affected the "power off" condition.

[Q] cool3d aces v3: power off not working/no shut down

Hi there,
I'm enjoying coolexe's ROM but I've discovered I can't turn my phone off.
Long press of the power button shows the menu with "Power off", "Hibernate", "Restart" etc. Selecting power off shows the first part of the shut down sequence (white htc screen, black screen, button lighting turns off).
Pressing the power button again (long press needed) does not boot the phone but shows pin entry screen first (ie, the phone did not shut down).
I first noticed this because over night my phone went to 0% battery while I thought it was turned off. The only way I've been able to shut it down properly is rebooting to recovery and powering down from there.
Its a minor problem but I'd be pleased to hear if someone can suggest a solution. The ROM is otherwise great!
Thanks

i don't use this rom, but i think sense 2.1 and above has fast boot feature
try: menu -> settings -> power, then make sure 'fast boot' is unticked
then when you power off the phone, it should properly be properly switched off instead of hibernating.
that worked - thanks!
(now I wish I'd figured that one out myself)

[Q] Screen not starting up for power button

Hi,
I started to get a weird problem since last week. I've had this phone for about 3 months now and never had any problem like this.
It all started one morning when I wanted to stop phone alarm. The alarm was going off but the screen was black. I pressed the power button to wake up, but it was still black. After couple of times pressing the power button the screen came up. First it was not that often but the situation started to get worse. It came to that I can sometimes cannot turn it on for a long period of time. I need to keep pressing power button, volume buttons and eventually it will come up.
This is what I've found so far:
1) When the power button is pressed, although the screen doesn't start up, I can see the three buttons at the bottom lighting up. So it is not a problem of the power button.
2) When the power button is pressed, although the screen doesn't power up, the screen seems responsive. I can feel the vibrations when I tap (I have a startup password)
3) When the phone is connected to a power supply, screen always starts up without a problem.
4) Screen will start up more frequently when the batter power is high.
It seems as though there is a connection between batters power and the screen not starting up. But then again, once the screen comes up (after not starting up), then it works fine, until I turn the screen off.
Has anybody experienced anything like this before?
I did a factory reset thinking it might be some application I installed but it didnt help.
I had to send this phone once to repair the speaker and cost more than $80 just for courier. I don't want to spend another to get this fixed.
Thanks.
I have this problem or a problem very close to this. I have a HTC One X (international version). I'm running the latest version and updates and the problem has existed for at least the last two updates.
Android Version 4.1.1
HTC Sense version 4+
Software number 3.18.401.1
I have the screen lock pattern turned on.
Sometimes when I hit the power button, the phone does not turn on and so I press it again and only after a third press does the phone turn on. I then unlock the phone and use as normal. So, several times per day I have to press the power button three times before the phone turns on. But other times I press the power button once and it turns on straight away. I've just turned the pattern unlock off to see if this makes any difference. I'll start to record the exact details of when I experience this and see if we can work out a common cause.
Hopefully if enough people report this problem then they can send out an update to fix this problem.

I'm pretty sure this is a hardware issue. I bought mine from Expansys and sent it back to them for repair. It's been more than a month and they say they're still reparing it.
In my case it was impossible for me to start the screen up with power button no matter how much I pressed it. The only thing that worked for me was to press the back of the phone just below the camera. So it seems like a hardware issue. But on the other hand, at times when I can't get the screen turned on no matter what I do, I'd turn the phone off and start again and the thing would start up like nothing happened. So while I'm pretty sure it is a HW issue, I'm not sure how a power restart makes it work.
For me I don't think that this is a hardware problem as it only started happening once I did the big upgrade from 4.0 to 4.1 and then it follows a specific pattern. That is three power button presses will always turn it on. Less frequently I also get a problem where the power button turns on the three lights on the soft buttons but the screen remains black. I then hit the power button to turn it off, and again to turn it on and the phone is back to normal again.
Is yours an international version? I bought mine an international version and had it shipped to Australia.
solved?
Hi - did anyone ever solve this? This is happening to me with my HTC desire X after having had the screen repaired, so I think it is hardware related, but the shop doesn't know how to fix it! My screen also does not turn back on when I want to end a phone call and pull the phone away from my face anymore. These problems seem related as they started at the same time. I would be grateful for help!

[Q] Catch 22 - Desire got Wet not have 3 issues!

Hi guys.
So i managed to get my desire wet/damp and whilst it still works it has developed 3 issues:
1) The weirdest of all - the phone wont go into standby, as soon as you press the power button or let it timeout the screen goes off and they instantly turns back on to the lock screen. If i leave it, it will timeout again on lockscreen and come back on, it does this forever. I have done factory resets etc, all the same. Weird right
2) Volume keys do not work - think means i had issues getting into recovery. Finally found a widget to do it and then....
3) Trackpad does not work in recovery so i cannot re-flash or try any new rom to see if that fixed (1)
Proper catch 22
Any suggestions appreciated.
Thanks

UPDATE
OK I HAVE AN UPDATE:
The plot thickens but i have managed to S-OFF my Desire and eventually install Clockworkmod Touch which obviously doesn't require me to use the trackpad button so I was able to use Recovery. I wiped the phone and tried reflashing the ROM i had been using (Insertcoin) but this made no difference, the phone still keeps waking up immediately that it goes to sleep (either with power button or by sleeping timeout).
So i decided to install a completely different ROM (CM10_VJ_4.1.2_v3.0) and this installed fine. Now the phone will go to sleep and stay asleep if I press the power button. Problem solved I thought!
Now when the phone is asleep 50% of the time, trying to wake it with the power button will cause it to reset immediately and goto the white HTC screen. When it restarted it sits on the unlock screen and keeps timing out, screen goes off, then immediately on again - weird. If i unlock and lock with power button it will behave. For some reason the Search key will wake the phone every time no issues. Only the power key to unlock causes it to reset. Phone is sleeping according to Battery info.
Any other suggestions for what I could try. Could this possibly be something hardware related now? If there a way i can log the key presses or reason it wakes/resets?
Any help really appreciated, the phone is pretty unusable with this reset issue now.
THanks

May be a hardware issue. But try installing a lighter ROM like dGB or MildWild and see if the issue persists.

Thanks mate. So i tried this and installed CM7 today and have discovered something. As i said above the volume down button doesn't work and the volume up only works with some persuasion. Once i installed CM7 the problem where I lock phone with power key and it instantly wakes up now persists (on the JB rom it at least stayed asleep but reset if power button was pressed again).
However whe i changed the display timeout to 15seconds i watched as it timed out and instantly woke then noticed the volume would increment down one notch each it woke up again. This leads me to think that rather then the volume down not working at all it is actually stuck down permanently and could be causing the issue here. Is there any way I can find out if this is the case and disable the volume keys through software or do i need to open up the phone and disconnect it?
Thanks for any help - i think we are getting there!

Flash a ROM which can be unlocked via trackpad and volume can be adjusted from the phone settings without touching volume keys and the power button on the top.
I recommend MildWild5.8 based on CM7. When I was on it, I totally forgot about volume and power keys because all the phone operations can be done without them.
Thanks thats a great suggestion. I actually worked out that the trackpad is being pressed down constantly too because on CM7 when i disable trackpad to wake the phone actually stays asleep.
Is there any way to disable both volume and trackpad buttons at the kernal/system level?

Stuck at Black Sceen Crash

I just did a reboot of my tab and it got stuck at what I call "Black Sceen Crash".
Looks like being switched off - but isn't.
It does react on screen touches with a very brief vibration.
And it gets a litte warm.
Does not react on long pressing power button - so no reboot, no download mode, whatsoever.
Guess I have to let it run out of battery - which might take couple of days with screen off. We'll see.
Any idea what to do or what could have caused that behavior? Any similar experience?
Before trying to reboot there was no mobile connection, and I wanted to reboot to get it reconnected. Otherwise no problem.
I am running stock Samsung ROM, rooted, Skyhigh Kernel, OC/UV.

Yeah, I also discovered long pressing power button alone does not force-reset the device. I managed to reset it though by press-hold Power + Home + Either Vol Up/Down. Give that a try.
I can't remember whether it was the Vol Up or Down, try one then the other if it didn't work first time. Good luck.
After a while (30 min probably) it did not any more react on screen touches and was cold. Off maybe? Still no reaction on long pressed Power Button. Tried Volume Down+Home+Power Button - and fortunately it revived the tablet. Strange. Thanks for the hint!
I face the Black screen of death and the device (T805) was not responding to any reboot, recovery or download mode actions, sent it back to Samsung support and they claim an internal piece of HW need to be replaced, I refused that and asked for refund or new device... After a week I got a replacement device...

Power Button unresponse (stuck?)

Hello,
My HTC One M8 power button suddenly went unresponsive yesterday - Nothing happens when i click it to turn on/off the screen or even get the power menu up. Sometimes it seems to be stuck (Pressing the home button triggers the screenshot function (Power + home ))
The button itself does not seem stuck or anything and i get normal response when clicking it hardware wise.
I already tried restarting which didnt solve the problem.
I'm running stock rom, unrooted version 2.22.401.5
Any idea what might wrong?

My PC currently suffers from the same button stuck issue. All I do is power it off and keep pressing the power button something like 20 times gently and continuously. Give it a shot. Make sure the button is clean in the cut outs and do the same trick to your button. Make sure you [DONT] power off the device, as there's a chance of never booting up; just some friendly advice. :good:
Sorry to bump this, but might be helpful if anyone else gets the same problem.
I sent my HTC One M8 to repair where they replaced the power button - Everything seems fine now.
