So I activated Universal Switch on S6 Edge to check it out, something went wrong in the settings (long story short, got a pop up while setting it up), now screen unresponsive.
It works, I just get this blue horizontal line scanning the screen and nothing else but the power button and home button works. Tried safe mode, no bueno. How can I disable US feature without resetting to factory or at least no data wipe (if possible!)?
Android 5.0, rooted with pingpong, no custom recovery, knox 0x0.
All help is appreciated.

Fixed!
The way I had fixed this is by holding down the power button, both up and down sound buttons, and the home button until it restarted. When the device turned back on it gave the option to turn the setting off. Hope it helped!

how to turn off universal switch
hit home button 3 times
Thanks alot
It worked buddy
It doesn't give me the option to turn it off
Hi,
I have been struggling with Universal Switch on a Samsung S5 Neo. I switched it on, but was never able to switch it off again.
These are findings so far:
-> Did a factory reset using "Sound Up", "Home" and "Power" button simultaneous.
-> The device comes back and wants to configure itself again.
-> I restored my settings from Google, but this immediately brought back "Universal Switch"
-> Factory Reset again and configured the device, but told Google that I want to use it as a "New Device".
-> Now I can use my device in a proper way.
-> In Google Play Store I find all my Apps which were linked to my account and reinstalled them and I am back in business again.
-> Took me half a day to sort this out.
The programmer who designed and programmed this should be hung and shot and poisoned, because this is absolute Crapware.
Hope this helps for all the others who are suffering.
You can also push the home button three times and it should turn it off.
thank u ur the best
Ok, so i have exactly the same problem except my home button doesn't work
Anyone one know how to sort this without having to take it in to a store?
I was faced with this problem before and looked everywhere and couldnt find a fix. This was a while ago. So I dont remember what I did to clear it. I was cleaning off the screen and touched the home button as I was wiping it off and the problem began again.... I just came across your comment because all the others failed. I pressed the home button 3 times quickly and the blue lines stopped scrolling. In addition, I went over the accessibility and I turned off the "Universal Switch" option as much as the option allows. I hate this function. I do not use it or need it (for my needs). I hope I can remember what to do next time this happens. I swore to myself I would remember last time, but apparently that wasnt a guarantee. This time, I will write it down and put is somewhere I know I will find it next time I see these nefarious blue lines scrolling. Hopefully I wont see it again since I disabled it more than it was to begin with. Thank you ever so for commenting. You saved me a lot of frustration!
great fix

When I m eg in the Market or running Internet and press the Home Button I don t return to the home screen anymore. I must have changed something but don t now what.....
no ideas anyone?
Ideas about what?! You're not describing your problem. What happens when you press Home?
I only see the screen 'flicker' 1 time
Have you tried rebooting the phone? Is your phone rooted? Is it unlocked or branded? C'mon, give some more details if you want help!
You might try installing "Home Switcher" from the Market and see if it helps.
Rebooting does not help. Original 2.1 rom, installing home switcher does not help either. Did I clean install last night, home button worked fine for some hours and after this there s again the same problem => no returning to the home screen and only a short 'screen flicker' when pressing the home button.
I would speak to HTC if that did not work. They should repair it for free because its under warranty.
It's unlikely to be a hardware issue if it sometimes works.
When using Home Switcher, what apps show up in the list? (might be a rogue app that is stealing the home button function by registering itself as a launcher application).
Do you have any apps installed? (you said you have done a clean install but it's not clear if you installed any apps after that; please note that you might have enabled backup to your sd card [Settings -> Privacy] and that even after a clean install some of your settings will he restored from that backup).

I'd suggest booting into safe mode as this will stop all 3rd party applications from running. If it works from there, it seems pretty likely that the issue is related to an application you have installed.
To get into safe mode, power off your device, and then power back up again whilst holding down the menu button, and keep it held down until the phone has completely booted. Once booted, you should find it says "safe mode" in the bottom left corner of the screen.
Note that if you do this, all your 3rd party widgets on the home screens will stop functioning - even when you have exited safe mode. You will need to delete and re-add them.
Regards,
Dave

Very good idea/advise.
This worked for me
Reading through this thread made me wonder whether the fact my Home and Search buttons suddenly weren't working could have been caused by an app I installed the day before (No Lock).
Before uninstalling it I decided to give it a test. It was on "Locking Disabled". I set to "Locking Enabled" and tested the Home button - voilĂ , it worked. Tested the Search button, it worked too.
Set the app back to "Locking Disabled" - Home and Search buttons still working.
My buttons, home and both volume buttons are dying. I think it's just wear and tear really which is bad because I've had it less than a year.
So I've had the Optimus G since last night, and I noticed there was an AT&T update, but I postponed it. However, after postponing it three times, it launched the update automatically and forced me to update. The phone rebooted into the update screen, going through a firmware and software update before rebooting again. It got to the AT&T "Rethink possible" logo and stays there forever. No amount of hard resets help. I had root before the update, but I've read on here that others had root and updated just fine.... has this happened to anyone else? Do I have any other option besides going back to AT&T?
EDIT: How do I boot into recovery mode? I've read that for other LG phones you have to hold down both volume buttons while holding the power, but when I do that it just goes to the AT&T splash like usual.
Did you try holding the power button? I was able to get into download mode by pressing pwr/vol+/vol- simultaneously with usb plugged in, but I don't know if that will help your situation.
Yikes, sorry to hear that. I had no problems and kept root.
Sounds like a return if you can't get it going quickly. You shouldn't have to deal with that on a mandatory update.
Good luck!

From the manual, that I downloaded from the LG website (not sure that this helps, if you don't know what to delete):
5. Using Safe Mode and System Recovery Using Safe mode
To recover your phone when malfunctioning.
1 Turn off your phone and reboot. When you see the booting animation (Rethink Possible SM) press and hold the Volume Down Key . Your Home screen will then be displayed with the words "Safe mode" in lower left corner.
2 From the Home screen, tap the Menu Key and tap All settings > General tab > Applications.
3 Tap one of the available tabs at the top of the screen and select the application you wish to uninstall.
4 Tap Uninstall and OK to confirm.
5 After uninstalling the application, turn off and reboot your phone.

Neither of these solutions did anything, but thanks anyways.
Bummer sorry to hear that. Is the att store far away? I really don't think this has anything to do with root.

No, it's only a few miles away, but as a college student with no car it makes things a little harder. I'm not sure what happened, I'm surprised they forced me to update...

Is the phone stock or modded (rooted, custom ROM, etc.)?
Did you try to reboot device already?

Yes, the first thing I tried.
I'm not completely clear on the issue. If you just tap the power button while the screen is on, it should turn off the screen (which in turn also locks it). If holding the power button until you get the power menu, the choices should just be Power Off, Restart, and Airplane Mode. I don't think there is an option to lock screen on that menu on a stock ROM (and actually no custom ROMs that I know of).
Sorry for the delay on the answers.
It's not that i can't access the power menu, that works fine.
But if you want to lock your screen, you just tap the power buttom and that dosent work.
And I just found out that the screen NEVER shouts down!? It's always on.
When I reeboot the phone, the screen darkens, but all the icons on the desktop is visible and when i try
to tap the screen it acts like its off!?
Can't even think of whats wrong with this now.
The power buttom clearly works, but i can't lock or shout down the screen.
It's like its always on!?
I'm having this exact same issue.
My solution
Obviously this is much too late for the OP, but for anyone who might still stumble on this thread (it is still one of the top hits on Google for this issue), I got mine working again by rebooting the phone, after first disabling fast boot in the settings. (Settings > Power > Fast boot - I should note my phone is the HTC One Mini 2, but I assume the M8 isn't too different in this regard).
I had previously attempted rebooting from the power options (both restart and power off), but this hadn't fixed the problem.

The Fast boot option in Settings was removed from the M8 as of Lollipop.
Even when the M8 had this option, it did not effect "Restart" in power options. At least on the M8, restart is always a try restart; and Fast boot only affected the "power off" condition.
So I was prepping the tablet to sell it.
Did the factory reset.
Then when it booted back up to the "welcome to Samsung" screen, I somehow must have pressed a button that enabled some weird feature.
Now whenever I press a button, the tablet speaks out in a voice to let me know what that button is.
But that's all it does. None of the buttons actually do anything.
lol what did I enable? I spent some time and couldn't figure out how to disable it back to regular mode?
EDIT: As soon as I gave up and asked for help, I finally sort-of figured it out.
When you press a button and it tells you what the button is for (but nothing happens), you just double-tap the button and then the button works. I was able to reboot and kick off another factory reset which should get rid of that feature.
For future reference, it's probably something in accessibility (under settings) that you accidentally enabled.
I have a Samsung I9250 which I've unlocked, rooted and loaded with Lineage. The Lineage version is 13.0-20171126-NIGHTLY-maguro. The recovery is TWRP and the root is through SuperSU FREE (CM) v2.79-SR3. The On/Off button doesn't usually work. If the phone is off then pressing On/Off has no effect. Occasionally it works for no reason I can see, it seems to be random, but for the most part it simply doesn't have any effect. If the phone is on then the same is true. Turning it off from the On/Off button is usually impossible. I get round this through Settings>Display & lights>Wake on plug. This means I can activate the phone by connecting it to a PC using its USB cable. This will activate the phone immediately if it is off. It doesn't help with turning it off and I am usually reduced to taking the battery out. The phone is effectively useless although it is clearly NOT bricked. When I can turn it on it works fine.
I don't know if this is a hardware or software problem. If it's a software problem I don't know if the fault is in Lineage or TWRP or SuperSU. I noticed that the problem existed before I installed SuperSU. Has anyone else come across this problem? I'm reluctant to bin the phone because I spent such a long time getting Lineage on to it, but, if I can't turn it on or off it's not really a phone. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
@erich_vogt it's more a hardware problem, you can buy a new button (find link of online stores in accessories section or google.it).
for easyness you don't need to plug charge/usb everytime, you can set volume button waker, find in settings > button (don't remember where correctly, it will be somewhere there) then use volume switches to wake it.

There have been power button bugs, but only in the OS. If it's not turning on from off, then I think the switch is broken! A common failure in old phones, which is why "volume button to wake" is important, to reduce load on the power button.
Thanks very much for offering to help.
I already had the option for the Volume control buttons to wake the phone turned on. It's here - Settings > Buttons > Volume Buttons > Wake up device. This worked for a while then stopped. I disassembled the phone to look at the On/Off button. I tried turning the phone on directly from the metal contact pad beneath the plastic button. This worked. When the phone had booted I checked to see if there was another nightly update for Lineage. There was the 3rd of Dec update. I downloaded and installed the nightly update using TWRP. It reported a successful install. The phone rebooted and never got past the Google boot-up screen. I waited for a few minutes and the took the battery out and tried turning on again from the metal contact pad. The phone booted but again got stuck (or seemed to) on the Google boot-up screen. I'm afraid that's it for me. This doesn't appear to be related to anything I have done or not done. The phone is just taking up too much time and it will have to go the the local recycler. Life is, as they say, too short. Thanks again for your suggestions.

3rd dec nightly has problem with booting, get back to older than it.
Reset volume button waker, if it stopped working. I never had problems with volume buttons.
I'd second the idea of it being software. I've had problems with all builds after 20171112. I get the impression there was something overlooked when the developers unified the builds for different GNex variants.
If you still have the phone, try that 20171112 build.
I don't know how to roll back to an earlier build. The phone will not boot. If I try VolumeDown+On/Off to try to get into TWRP Recovery mode nothing happens. The adb bridge option is turned on but if I connect the phone to my PC with a usb cable it does not appear in Device Manager as it used to. If I run ".\adb devices" it is not listed so clearly adb cannot find it. I don't know what else I can do.

Ah, ok. Sorry, I thought you could still do more than that, but it was rebooting and unusable in that sense.
That's well beyond any help I can offer you. I hope you got any data off it.
