HTC Hero Sprint Model brewed ROMs? - Hero, G2 Touch Android Development

This may seem like a dumb question to many of you, but I've been out of the loops for years now... last rom i updated was on my HTC SDA! Anyway, I see a lot of ROMs circulating here, but am unsure if the lowest common denominator for all these is the GSM version; more so, if there's even a community for cooked Sprint ROMs here for the HTC hero. I'm looking to switch to Sprint; pick up a Hero, and hopefully put a quasi 2.1 Eclair on here before the official rls. date, and w/o all the obligatory Sprint bloatware.
Thanks in advance for any answers!

there is a CDMA Hero subforum! :]

Comparing cooked ROMS

havent been on these boards in years. got an att tilt, donated, downloaded, and never looked back. looking into getting the HTC Touch HD (Telstra version) and I keep reading how that stock ROM sucks and it'd be best flash a new ROM. that is something I havent done before so I've been to the wiki page of the phone and began reading. My only question is there are tons or ROMS out there but where can you compare the differences in them? I'm leaning towards one of Dutty's ROMs only because back when I cruised these boards heavy, his name was always being praised but I've never used his ROMS so it'd be all out of familiarity.

Froyo

Why can't we have Froyo yet already???? What's the hold up? By the time, we get it... 3.0 will be around the corner...
Yours doesn't have it?
Yep. I have it
Sent from my Evo on on the Now network from Sprint
oh and duck Apple
I'm not talking about hacked custom roms.. I'm talking about offical release from HTC. I want Froyo that is fully function including 4g
you are lucky you didnt own a Hero then. It was outdated they day i got it(two days before launch). it came with 1.5 i believe, 1.6 was already out and 2.0 was announced a few weeks later w/ the DROID. THEN 2.1 one came out and Hero owners were STILL waiting. finally 2.2 was announced and a week or so later they pushed 2.1 to Sprint Heros.
long story short, dont expect it to come out anytime soon with HTC's track record. i would recommend rooting and installing cm6, it runs great sans 4G

I'm confused. I thought cm6 has the known issues for 4g.

"without 4G"
HTC has announced 2.2 will roll out by December. If you want it that bad, i suggest trying out CyanogenMod. I never had 4G coverage around me, but after playing around with it, i would never go back to a Sense-based 2.1 ROM.

Cyanogen's mod, while amazingly awesome, has problems. There are missing features, inconsistencies between what works and what doesnt from user to user, and it's AOSP.
HTC has to make EVERYTHING work for EVERYONE all the while porting over their sense UI. All of their apps and widgets need to work on Froyo. It needs to be stable. This sort of thing realistically can take months to perfect. So don't be butthurt when you don't get it til Christmas.
I personally can't stand Sense... or any other UI put on top of android. But as long as I can root and boot up custom roms, I'm a happy camper.
uhh isn't google suppose to be the one releasing froyo since they are the makers of android os not htc? i thought htc was just the hardware
google only releases it for nexus one
they then release froyo source then hardware makers like htc and motorola use the source along to build their versions with either sense or blur
Now I can see how so many people are confused.
This isn't a simple phone, it is complex and there are many hands in the cookie jar. Please do some research about your phone, and who makes what, and you will realize it is far more complicated than "Froyo is out, how come my phone doesn't have it."
I'm very happy with the Froyo I already have. I see 4G as a totally useless feature due to its extreme battery drainage.

Uhh mayb not everyone has the time to research the whole history/background of their phone as you do...like me i switch phones every 2 months that means i'd be doing more research on my phones history then using the damn thing.

Then thinking you can come into a development forum and post a question that should be common knowledge to anyone tinkering at all in Android is just lazy.
If you switch phones every two months, then what do you care about Froyo, or even learning what your phone can do anyway...
When I make a purchase, I find out what I am buying, if it suits my needs, what limitations it has, what support it has etc. I call that making an "informed" decision.
I don't just walk into the story and buy the pretty one without knowing the above. Or else I would have an iPhone and wouldn't care about what I can do with it.
This was a lazy question posted by someone that hasn't done any reading about their phone or they would see what has to be done to get an Official Froyo build.
basically,
Froyo (aka: Android 2.2) has been released by it's maker. it's maker is Google. HTC gets licensing to install the OS on it's phones. now, when HTC first started working with Android...android was..well...it was lacking...it was lacking a fair bit. so the HTC devs put some 'Sense' onto android to make it something that the nerds can bring to their corporate executives. (cause if we nerds can't sell the boss on how cool this is...then i don't get to play it.) meanwhile, Google is trying to turn Android into a serious market contender. and its going up against some very mature code. this has a side effect of causing Google to release v1.5, v1.6, v2.1 and v2.2 rather close to each other. this is not a sustainable pace of release...it will piss everyone off. thankfully Froyo supposedly will be able to bridge us over until v3.0. at which point google has said they will proceed with a much slower version relase of Android.
Sense is not needed like it used to be. however, it'll prolly be around for a while. htc has said they will release froyo onto the evo but that is not a priority for them...the evo is yesterdays product so its more important getting the upcoming devices ready for market. perhaps the HTC/Sprint sanctioned Android 2.2 will be released by the end of the 4th quarter (or so they say).
on the good note...CM6 is rather nice. even without having 4G running yet. but really, how often do need to turn on the 4G radio? and they will get it working before long.
i must also agree w/ Bielinsk on this one....

This may be a little off topic, but if I root my EVO what ROM should I use if I want Froyo and Sense?

Check out Avalaunchmods Froyo ROM with Sense. He released an RC for it today and hopes to have a couple of little issues fixed tonight. He has a Sense and no-Sense ROM available. He's put a lot of work into them and i'll be checking out the Sense ROM for sure tonight. Probably bounce back and forth between the CM6 that i'm using now and Ava's Sense ROM.

I respect your desire for Sense, however, I see no Sense in it.

maybe because all the phones i buy are android os...and you really have way too much time on you're hand to flame someone over such a little thing...all i asked was "isn't froyo suppose to be released by google and not htc" if you don't wana answer it then leave it alone...noone wants to hear your history crap...Noone wants to know how you read every nutrient fact before buying milk or read every little thing that's on the charging adapter...maybe you have time all the time in the world to do that and all the power to you but not everyone is like...we actually have a life and don't learn the history of every little thing we purchase...and fyi forums are made to ask questions and to inform each other...so if you don't like someones question instead of flaming simply don't read it and move on.

[Q] CDMA Desire (US Cellular)

I just saw a video review of US Cellular's new CDMA version of the HTC Desire. No doubt the people who buy this phone will discover all sorts of information on this forum... info that could (I'd imagine) seriously harm their phone if they try to flash their CDMA Desire with a GSM Desire ROM!
Might it be appropriate to give this variant its own subforum? Or failing that, post some prominent warnings that the US Cellular HTC Desire is a significantly different piece of hardware?
I guess nobody with one of these has discovered the forum here yet?
(noob here). Can it really cause that much problems? I'm going to be picking up the Desire from Telus soon. Are you saying that I won't be able to use the current custom ROMS?

The Telus Desire is not CDMA - it's GSM/HSPA like all the others. Custom ROMs will work as long as they support the SLCD screen (some are written only for AMOLED screens).
I'm specifically talking about the US Cellular HTC Desire, which is the first CDMA version to be released.
And so it begins...

I have mine as well. Can we root with the guides using the desire from other carriers?

agree with the OP.
just like the sprint hero and the GSM hero.
need to be a subsection. like you said it could seriously damage the phones if they flash the wrong things. hope a mod creates a different section soon.
+1 on that. There's a lot of people out there who don't even know the different between GSM & CDMA.
Also, it would help for development in general (root and roms.)
I really think the mods should open seperate forums for Desire GSM and Desire CDMA, because as both phones use completely different radios, chances are it will wreck the phone if you put a GSM ROM on a CDMA phone.
Anyone know who any of the mods for the Desire forum are? I would just PM them but I'm not sure who they are.

[Q] Estimated time until Gingerbread ROM?

So the Nexus One could get 2.3 OTA any day now. And the Desire is basically an N1 with slightly different hardware bells&whistles plus Sense. And an official HTC update with Sense could take ages, but GingerNinja is already floating around....
If the N1 starts getting 2.3 officially on day-X, what's the likely time until a working, everyday ROM for the Desire shows up here? Without Sense, of course. Forget that Christmas would mean a delay. Just wondering when to start getting hopes up.
Apologies if this exact question has been asked and answered. All my search turned up was vague "It could be months for official 2.3 with Sense but unofficial vanilla 2.3 ROMs much sooner." Thanks in advance to all the people who do the actual work making it happen!
If it is out for the Nexus One, It should be ported for our Device within a day or two

OFFICIAL Gingerbread Sense *MIGHT* have the new Sense UI

Hey!
Today, I was doing some surfing, and came across the Sense SDK/HTCdev page on the web. It's already been covered on the forums, however I think that there may be a slight hint there as to what the new Gingerbread ROM on the Desire will include:
http://www.htcdev.com/about/
If you look at the Desire in the greyish box down the page, you will clearly see the Sense UI running in the image is the new version that is found on the Gingerbread Sense devices.
This could be one of two things:
1. A little hint as to the features of the Gingerbread ROM
2. A mistake in the Photoshop department
I'm hoping it's number one, but IMHO I think it will turn out to be number two, what with the leaked HTC Asia ROM having the FroYo Sense UI... but anyhow, let's wait and see!
What do you think?
Thanks!
-Cameron
This seems like a photoshop mistake. They just fit in a screenshot of the Sense UI they got laying around and fit it in a press shot of the HTC Desire.
But.. (there's always a but)
It somehow would make sense that they upgraded the Sense version of the Desire to 2.1 (or something similar). In the leaked Asia builds, you could find some features that were only found on Sense 2.1 + every single phone in the Desire "family" is running 2.1.
Also, remember HTC saying that there wasn't enough internal space on the Desire for Gingerbread + Sense? Yeah well, those leaked Asia updates, they had Sense + GB, didn't they? And as far as I know, that ROM was about the same size as a FroYo stock ROM.
My guess is that they were slowly porting Sense 2.1 to the Desire, feature by feature and at some point, someone said "this is going to slow, we're having more issues than planned, this is going to cost us more money and time than we planned", so naturally, HTC pulled the plug, until the community went nuts and screamed rape and fire. Sooo, they're now settling for a dirty solution: ditch some apps from the system partition, which can be found on the market.
What I can't seem to think of is why they wouldn't stick with the regular Sense that we have right now, mixed with GB. It would've been easier and less time consuming.
This is just a sequence of thoughts that I have concerning this update, don't go believing me or telling me that I'm wrong, I'm just thinking out loud, sharing my perspective
Thanks for that. I'm hoping that you're wrong though, because I'd like to get Sense 2.1 without ports but that's me, greedy as always
HTC doesn't do "porting" as many of the dev's here on XDA do, they got the source code so they only need to compile a Sense 2.1 version for the HTC Desire Which was what I meant with porting.
I'm hoping for a Sense 2.1 update as well, since I like Sense 2.1 far more than Sense 3 (based on what I've seen, tried and read) but I'm not getting my hopes up.. Time will tell ^^
No, by ports I meant that the new Desire update wouldn't be ported, so there would be no incompatibilities. Hope thats what you meant just
Hi, i'm also hope that Desire will get sense 2.1, in Poland we sometimes say that "the hope is the mother of the stupid people" after translation of course but maybe this time it will be different ;p
BTW. Official ROM's are theoretically 100% bugfree, but practically may be different or devs are making better functionality ROM

right /// hehe dokładnie
@flavio.moringa - it's clear that we will not see sense 3.0 because it's reserved for Sensation / more expensive HTC models or newer models as it provides a logical marketing policy
but 2.1 would be a very positive surprise...
