Hey!
Today, I was doing some surfing, and came across the Sense SDK/HTCdev page on the web. It's already been covered on the forums, however I think that there may be a slight hint there as to what the new Gingerbread ROM on the Desire will include:
http://www.htcdev.com/about/
If you look at the Desire in the greyish box down the page, you will clearly see the Sense UI running in the image is the new version that is found on the Gingerbread Sense devices.
This could be one of two things:
1. A little hint as to the features of the Gingerbread ROM
2. A mistake in the Photoshop department
I'm hoping it's number one, but IMHO I think it will turn out to be number two, what with the leaked HTC Asia ROM having the FroYo Sense UI... but anyhow, let's wait and see!
What do you think?
Thanks!
-Cameron
This seems like a photoshop mistake. They just fit in a screenshot of the Sense UI they got laying around and fit it in a press shot of the HTC Desire.
But.. (there's always a but)
It somehow would make sense that they upgraded the Sense version of the Desire to 2.1 (or something similar). In the leaked Asia builds, you could find some features that were only found on Sense 2.1 + every single phone in the Desire "family" is running 2.1.
Also, remember HTC saying that there wasn't enough internal space on the Desire for Gingerbread + Sense? Yeah well, those leaked Asia updates, they had Sense + GB, didn't they? And as far as I know, that ROM was about the same size as a FroYo stock ROM.
My guess is that they were slowly porting Sense 2.1 to the Desire, feature by feature and at some point, someone said "this is going to slow, we're having more issues than planned, this is going to cost us more money and time than we planned", so naturally, HTC pulled the plug, until the community went nuts and screamed rape and fire. Sooo, they're now settling for a dirty solution: ditch some apps from the system partition, which can be found on the market.
What I can't seem to think of is why they wouldn't stick with the regular Sense that we have right now, mixed with GB. It would've been easier and less time consuming.
This is just a sequence of thoughts that I have concerning this update, don't go believing me or telling me that I'm wrong, I'm just thinking out loud, sharing my perspective
Thanks for that. I'm hoping that you're wrong though, because I'd like to get Sense 2.1 without ports but that's me, greedy as always
HTC doesn't do "porting" as many of the dev's here on XDA do, they got the source code so they only need to compile a Sense 2.1 version for the HTC Desire Which was what I meant with porting.
I'm hoping for a Sense 2.1 update as well, since I like Sense 2.1 far more than Sense 3 (based on what I've seen, tried and read) but I'm not getting my hopes up.. Time will tell ^^
No, by ports I meant that the new Desire update wouldn't be ported, so there would be no incompatibilities. Hope thats what you meant just
Hi, i'm also hope that Desire will get sense 2.1, in Poland we sometimes say that "the hope is the mother of the stupid people" after translation of course but maybe this time it will be different ;p
BTW. Official ROM's are theoretically 100% bugfree, but practically may be different or devs are making better functionality ROM

Probably justa an original sense with gingerbread... they seem to have problems with speed using sense 3

@flavio.moringa - it's clear that we will not see sense 3.0 because it's reserved for Sensation / more expensive HTC models or newer models as it provides a logical marketing policy
but 2.1 would be a very positive surprise...

hey guys seems like HTC is keeping the spirit up and giving the Desire a gingerbread OTA update by the end of june
not that our devs haven't already got gingerbread on it but like this we will have HTC sense the right way it's supposed to

Number 6, enjoy your short moment of fame.
Remember you have to share it with a increasing group of people who post stuff that has been posed before.
Search for a post next time instead of creating a post that has already been created about 10 times already. Seriously, no wonder why coutts left this forum. Full of idiots.
Yeah, but you could have said this in a much friendly way...
That was nice. No but seriously, I was in a **** mood and seriously, people should read more. Personally, I go through the forums and search to find stuff and I read an awful lot of posts (quite sad to be honest). It just gets on my nerves sometimes.
Been on Oxygen for a few weeks and frankly exchanging Sense for 300MB of onboard (not SD) app space is worth the loss of Sense. Using dialer1 and handcent and a bundle of other neat apps is great. Also have double the battery life that I had either 2.2 Stock Sense
oursoul, why do you insist on posting that very same line/paragraph/sales pitch on every single new thread that is popping up regarding the *ahem* "latest" news of Gingerbread OTA.
Bumping up your post count?
Did you find a replacement to take the "Notes" info from gmail contacts and link them all together which sense does? Thats the only reason in holding on TBH
It`s been official now, I`am reading on some site.
I prefer the Sense Dialer so dont like any of the current stock ROMs, so will wait patiently for the OTA.
Any better similar ones, that has contacts pics and facebook integration?
did anyone hear the leaked android 2.3.2 Galaxy S release?
I'll be disappointed if the Galaxy S gets a gingerbread update before the Desire... HTC will be slipping if that happens!
You know the drill mate.. the update will roll out.. it will be filled with bugs.. rants all over the place about how Sammy manages to make ****ty firmwares and then out of nowhere HTC will pop the update for us making the Desire again the first non developer device that gets the newest Android itteration
Or something along those lines.. I hope..

what will be funny is that by time June/July has come and we our 2.3 update, there is no doubt 2.5 (2.6) will have been announced and we'll all want that version instead.
Hopefully we'll atleast get the updated Sense with the update.
if Samsung roll out 2.3.2 then I hope HTC roll out 2.3.3 at least
also I would like them to fix the htc mail client too so it works with hotmail eas...
It's going to be annoying in 2.3 that you can't link Google contacts with Facebook ones, that was one of the things I missed when using Gingerbread ROMS. Looking forward to going back to an official ROM though whenever it's released.
I've been using the DevNull Rom, which is supposed to be a stock Android Rom, since yesterday.
HTC Sense is definitely more user friendly and intuitive....... has a lot more features too.
However, I find it to be quite unstable and kills the battery pretty quickly, and let's not forget the stupid apps like stock and peep.
Coming from HTC Sense, stock Android takes a while to get used to but I'm glad I made the switch 'cause my phone is a lot more stable now and the battery life has improved considerably.

a)partition tables are not related to this thread
b)what you are pointing out is just plain ridiculous. There is definitely no point in getting 300mb of internal space when a decent SD card outperforms nand. You can't fit use other roms either which are meant to be used with large caches, and you could brick your device.
Oh, and c) you don't get any of the aosp bugs either

@Erklat: what aosp bugs are you talking about? I'm thinking about flashing oxygen because it is said to be bugfree.
I am almost certain that HTC's Desire gingerbread Rom will use the old sense version. Nandspace is simply too small. HD -ROMs only work because of high use of A2SD and HTC can't use that on official ROMs.

i just got response from htc regarding my question will GB update for Desire/Bravo contain Sense 3.0...this is what they sent me:
Thank you for contacting HTC.
In regards to your enquiry, kindly note that the 2.3 gingerbread upgrade has not been released for the Desire phone yet, but it will be relased soon.
kindly note that that the upgrade will include the new HTC Sense 3.0.
Wow! that's really great!
So they are suggesting that the leaked Rom was a very early test build and not close to final.hmm
Sent from my HTC Desire using XDA App
I highly doubt this.
If it would contain a Sense upgrade, it would be 2.1, but certainly not 3.0
First of all, the hardware of the Desire isnt capable of running Sense 3.0 without a bunch of hacks (see custom roms) and secondly, it would affect sales on their newer devices.
Also see:
http://www.engadget.com/2011/04/14/htc-sense-3-0-will-only-support-sensation-evo-3d-flyer-and-new/
If you copied and pasted that message from your email then the sender hasn't spelt the second released properly.

I also find this highly unlikely.
Why would HTC want to update what is an end of life device with their latest sense version?
It doesn't make sense (excuse the pun).
From a commercial point of view, if they did that, they would be shooting themselves in the foot, and I don't think they are that stupid.

Imo they would be stupid if they do not provide updates. I will never buy a Samsung smartphone again just because of that...
Apple always provides latest updates for their phones and that is a good thing.

HTC is anything but stupid. Look at the way they market discriminate their products, adding and subtracting bits and pieces here and there. What they can't do is stop unofficial development, hence the upcoming invite to developers to contribute to making their products more "desirable".
Here's an idea: why pay for r & d when you can get it for free?
i just got another reply from HTC, it looks like they were to hasty with the first answer:
"In regards to your enquiry before, about the HTC sense version 3.0 with the 2.3 gingerbread update for the HTC Desire phone.
I do apologize for contacting you again, but I have just received an update from HTC, that the Desire phone will receive the 2.3 gingerbread upgrade/update soon. However unfortunately, there is no confirmation yet in regards whether the updated Desire phone will have the new sense version 3.0 or not.
I really do apologize for the inconvinience."
looks like the modders here on XDA will still have something to work on... but, fingers crossed....

We can just hope for sense 2.1, we will never get sense 3.0 officially, of course not now already..
HTC seemed to plainly say awhile back that no phone other than dual cores (being Sensation and Evo 3D) will get sense 3.0 going forward....
So I still think the best you can hope for is 2.1

Please wait while we find an agent you are now connected helpen.U Dries.Dries: Hi Nick, thanks for contacting customer support from HTC. Currently I am here to read your question.
Nick: Good morning
Nick: Okay
Dries: What is meant exactly with your question?
Nick: I have a Desire
Nick: but I read some rumors about an update end of May
Nick: but I would like to clarify
Nick: And some say there is in sense or sense 3.0 2.1
Nick: So I thought I take a minute contact
Nick: Because I mean the HTC Wildfire S has the same memory as RAM and ROM which has Sense 2.1, so I thought why would not the normal Desire
Dries: I ask a moment. Please be patient if you please
Nick: Okay I wait
Dries: It comes with Sense 2.1
Nick: Wow I'm really happy!
Nick: And you also know when it comes around?
Dries: Unfortunately I can not say exactly when it will roll out this update, but was soon to begin.
Nick: Okay so before July?
Dries: I can assure you unfortunately.
Nick: Okay, because the earlier leaked test builds gingerbread still had a 1.9 older sense, but I am glad that my desire so with a recent version of sense comes
Dries: I understand that.
Nick: Well I know just enough until now
Nick: Thanks a lot for everything!
Dries: That is welcome. I can today somewhere else help?
Nick: Oh no it is enough
Nick: I wish you a nice day!
Dries: Thank you for contacting, I wish you a nice day.

EDIT: im going to ask again for confirmation hahaha just to be sure (A), PS: the chatting is so funny lol..
Sorry to say this, but he probably mixed the desire with the desire HD, a regular mixup from HTC customer service rep's.
All indicates that the Desire is getting a modified Sense 1.9 update, with bits from the 2.0 Sense that came with the Desire HD release.

perhaps suggest calling it the HTC Desire (BRAVO) ORIGINAL - not the Desire HD - Ace...
and/or make them say which model they are referring to, rather than you saying it
I still don't believe it. Until I see it on my Desire it won't exist

I dont really see the point of this as right now the "Sense" scene is all about Sense 3.0 which already has a working beta ROM in existence. Most Sense users are all using either InsertCoin, RCMixS or like me Reflex S which has Sense 2.1 + 3.0 features and most are stable.
When the Sense 3.0 ports are our of beta i bet that even if HTC do officially release this update, no one is really going to care.
The devs here have been rolling out updates faster than you can get used to the new version they just released yesterday.
I chatted today also with HTC and he said that de Update comes in Q2 - THIS MONTH! I asked him "Is this true? or will it be an desaster like the Hero update?" The Said: "No, it comes this month!"
The question of Sense 2.1 he answert with: "Desire will get Sense 2.1 but it can be with an later update! But the chance is big that it comes together"
He said this in german and i translated what he said quick and dirty

The point is that there is probably a big HTC customer base that don't wanna root or flash custom roms. Actually I believe it's bigger than the custom scene. And this is their only hope for an update.
The XDA forum has become a place for any kind of Android fan for info and such, not for just developers and cooks.

But yes it's nice with some kind of confirmation for those wanting sense ports, but a timeline would be even more appreciated.

I think this is a noble cause, but there are some big problems with it.
1) HTC had tremendous trouble updating the Desire to Gingerbread, due to the small internal memory size. Squeezing ICS with Sense on top into that same limited amount of memory just isn't going to fly.
2) Even if they could, they're not going to make the effort anyway. The Desire may have been HTC's flagship at one point, right now it's just a 2 year old phone that has seen its fair share of updates. Right now, they'll focus on their current flagships - and could you blame them? If we want their official ICS + Sense experience, we'd just have to buy one of their newer phones. Unless they bring that to our old Desires, which is why they're not going to - their main goal is to make money after all.
3) This doesn't belong in development, post it in the General forum.
If so could HTC will stop manufacturing the focus of software development takes. I love HTC!

1) I wrote about HTC Sense in this petition. If it is possible to remove it from this rom everything will be perfect
2) if moderators move this theme to general topic, i will agree with them, but it's closely connected with development.
Never hurts to try, but I think this one is in vain.
They would either have to change hboot partition layout or do something else crazy. There just isn't enough space left on a stock hboot at the moment after installing ICS, let alone Sense on top of it.
The reason we can use ICS is because of A2SD setups where we gain additional space. HTC can't expect this from everyone in a rom for consumers.
i suppose you could petition to get source or drivers released so the amazing devs can cook stuff up for us, that would make more Sense, get it sense lolllllllll

1) I wrote about HTC Sense in this petition. If it is possible to remove it from this rom everything will be perfect

Why would they remove their trigger?
This makes no sense. I'm Desire user but I'm with HTC 100% on this.

As others have said, this will never happen:
1) HTC will not remove Sense from any update - even HTC's new phones with Android 4.0 coming out will still have Sense. As far as HTC is concerned, Sense is what sets them apart from other makers.
2) With Sense, the only way to fit ICS on the Desire would be to change the partition layout. However, no manufacturer will release an update that requires changing the partition layout, for multiple reasons (necessity of unlocking bootloader, warranty invalidation, likelihood of bricking phone, etc)
On the other hand, both Sandvold's and dk_zero_cool's ROMs are pretty much usable as daily drivers. I think we can be pretty happy with how well supported our Desire is by the dev community, and forget about support from HTC (Case in point - Gingerbread: Did anyone actually use the Gingerbread update from HTC? IMO the custom ROMs from this site were all a million times better)
very good idea, it is on that ICS will be well on my desire
Good idea, guys))

My knowledge on this is limited, but Im fairly sure the partition layout could be changed in an update if they wanted it to be. Correct me if Im wrong, but the partition layout is defined in the HBOOT, and HTC have updated the HBOOT via updates in the past.
That said, I am fairly confident they wouldn't do it for other reasons (it'll wipe the users /data partition, and the Desire is now an old phone that they don't see any reason to update).
Would love HTC to prove me wrong though and release an ICS update (or at the very least, updated drivers & kernel/etc that would make things a lot easier for the devs here)
signed as well

I hope you all know this is pointless
