"HTC Hero is the world’s first Android-based phone with a
customized user interface
HTC Sense to be integrated across a portfolio of
phones beginning with HTC Hero
LONDON – June 24, 2009 – HTC Corporation, a global designer of mobile phones, today debuted HTC Sense™, an intuitive and seamless experience that will be introduced across a portfolio of phones beginning with the new HTC Hero™. With its distinct design and powerful capabilities fully integrated with HTC Sense, Hero introduces a unique blend of form and function that takes Android to new heights.
HTC Sense is focused on putting people at the centre, by making your phone work in a more simple and natural way. This experience revolves around three fundamental principles that were designed by quietly observing and listening to how people live and communicate.
‘HTC Hero introduces a more natural way for reaching out to people and accessing your important information, not by following the status quo of today’s phones, but by following how you communicate and live your life,’ said Peter Chou, Chief Executive Officer, HTC Corporation. ”HTC Sense is a distinct experience created to make HTC phones more simple for people to use, leaving them saying, “it just makes sense.”’
HTC Hero
HTC Hero continues HTC’s leadership in cutting-edge design that focuses on introducing a variety of distinct devices to represent your own individuality. Boasting bevelled edges and an angled bottom, the HTC Hero is contoured to fit comfortably in your hand and against your face while you’re on a call. The HTC Hero is built to last, beginning with an anti-fingerprint screen coating for improved smudge-resistance and a longer-lasting, clearer display. The white HTC Hero includes an industry-first, Teflon coating, resulting in an improved, durable white surface that is soft to the touch.
With its 3.2-inch HVGA display, the HTC Hero is optimized for Web, multimedia and other content, while maintaining a small size and weight that fits comfortably in your hand. It also boasts a broad variety of hardware features including AGPS, digital compass, gravity-sensor, 3.5mm stereo headset jack, a five mega-pixel autofocus camera and expandable MicroSD memory. HTC Hero also includes a dedicated Search button that goes beyond basic search, providing you with a more natural, contextual search experience that enables you to search through Twitter, locate people in your contact list, find emails in your inbox or search in any other area in Hero.
HTC Sense
Built on a culture of innovation and a passion to enhance people’s lives, HTC shapes the mobile experience around the individual. Debuting on the HTC Hero and available on all new HTC devices moving forward, Sense delivers on three basic principles: Make it Mine, Stay Close and Discover the Unexpected.
Make It Mine
Make It Mine is about feeling your HTC phone was created for and by you. To do this, HTC encourages you to dictate and organize how you want to access the people and content in your life in a way that fits best for you. For some, this means adding glance-view widgets that push content like twitter feeds, weather and other content to the surface while others may want quick access to business-focused information like email, calendar and world-times. HTC is also introducing a new profile feature called ‘Scenes’ that enables you to create different customized content profiles around specific functions or times in your life.
Stay Close
Today, staying in touch with the people in your life means managing a variety of communication channels and applications ranging from phone calls, emails, texts, photos, status updates and more. HTC Sense takes a different approach by integrating these communication channels and applications into one single view, enabling you to stay closer to your important people. With HTC Sense, friends’ Facebook status updates and photos, along with their Flickr photos are included alongside their text messages, emails and call history in a single view.
Discover the Unexpected
Many of the most memorable moments in your life are experienced, not explained. HTC Sense is focused on providing a variety of these simple yet innovative experiences on your HTC phone that will sometimes bring you moments of joy and delight. It can be something as basic as turning the phone over to silence a ring or as simple as improving the smart dialler for making calls quicker. HTC Sense also includes ‘Perspectives’, a new way for viewing your content such as email, photos, Twitter, music and more in different ways.
Availability
The HTC Hero will be available to people across Europe in July and in Asia later in the summer. A distinct North American version will be available later in 2009."

looks very nice, Wonder if it can be ported to the HD and how much memory it uses. I get angry if im using more than 50% RAM

I hear you brother.
Looks sweet. Hope it won't take too long to be ported over to our HD's

Not of sure if I made myself clear, will be available for both Android and WM, so port should be very quick once the cabs can be extracted from a WM device.

this is what i allways disliked about TF3D
WOW! looks nice!! lets hope they can keep the RAM usage down!
Always hated TF3D for lack of customization. This seems really to change all that.
Thanks for the promising news
Regards
/Frewys

Amazing interface. Can't wait to get this it. I was working an a more iphone-esque interface (iHd) but if this can get ported then I would give up on that. Looks brilliant.
Hopefully HTC will encourage third party widgets and we can get lots of functionality in this UI.

+ 1 for that, fingers crossed!

Was using manilla!!! Sucked for a while! When i moved to ms3..manilla got better and alsmost perfect in a sence!! Then i disliked some functions of ms3 and moved over titanium inteface that in the newer builds is fast, stable and fully custom! I liked it!Once i settled down..(as i thought!) now that !!... Man i cant wait!

htc bringin' the 'wow' effect to winmo devices ^^

The information out is conflicting: WMowerusers is saying Sense UI will come to WM Devices. IntoMobile is quoting MobileBurn, which says that it will NOT be coming to WM.
Hard to say for now.
We need a public press release from HTC.
Personally I won't believe until it it's out, hacked and available in cooked ROMs

Really looking for to this being ported, looks amazing!!
although until then i would like something to pass the time....

The HTC roadmap published at CTIA Miami site contains the description of HTC Polaris. It is designed for GSM and WCDMA networks. Its design resembles that of HTC Artemis (P3300), however it has more powerful features: a VGA-display, large memory size, a 3-megapixel camera and so on.
The specs of HTC Polaris:
* Networks - GSM/GPRS/EDGE 850/900/1800/1900 MHz, WCDMA/HSDPA 2100 MHz
* Operating system - Windows Mobile 6 Professional
* Chipset - Qualcomm MSM7200 (CPU 400 MHz)
* Display – 3.5” touchscreen VGA
* 128 MB RAM, 256 MB ROM
* MicroSD-slot
* Bluetooth, Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g
* 3-megapixel camera with auto focus
* miniUSB, USB 1.1
* Digital compass
* GPS/AGPS
* FM-radio
This is the only device from the roadmap with the approximate release date (set for October 2007).
http://www.mobile-review.com/fullnews/main/2007/June/22_eng.shtml#14509
WOW!
A faster CPU, VGA screen, and 3MP camera would be great!
Seems to be the perfect device.
Expect 3 things:
to big (3,5" Display)
No SDHC, and only MicroSD (should be SD compared to size)
No USB-Host
Display – 3.5” touchscreen VGA
if this also is true...... eat **** iphone
I think i've found my next phone come upgrade time.
please tell me it has a 3.5mm headphone socket and I will kiss you.
HTC get a deal to have opera installed and market this one well and it could piss all over iphone sales.
Imagine the adverts now;
iPhone.......Oh is that all it does
I already see the iPhone as inferior. First of all...who cares about Apple - thier main marketing tactic is not "look how you can use me" - it's " look how you look with me".
I think its a joke that their iPhone didn't come with built in GPS (look at the tear downs, there is spare room in that phone) (www.ifixit.com) nor is it a 3g phone. I think its rather insulting...only slightly less insulting than the idiots trying to sell them here in Europe when no known way to SIM unlock them exists.
Our phones are light years ahead in basic functionality.
*EDIT*
I stand corrected,
The iPhone can be unlocked....but it is still more hype than the price tag can justify...
http://nanocr.eu/2007/07/03/iphone-without-att/
The only thing I miss about my DXA 2i (HTC Alpine) is the big screen. The Orbit's features with the form factor of the Alpine gets my vote.
I think thats slightly unfair.
Iphone was marketted as being years ahead of it's competitors. Now that's just rubbish in terms of tech and functionality. However I think it's wrong not to give Apple it's dues in terms of interface, all it's pinching and finger sweeping is impressive, and it's no coincidence that we aim to emulate some of this from applications like Slide2Unlock and utilising Wisbar etc to emulate its GUI, to newer advances like HTC's Touchflo
Not only that but I do believe aesthetics are important. The iPhone does actually look good, now taste is a personal thing, but the iPod still manages to outsell much better MP3 players partly based on it's looks, partly it's simple interface, but mainly because iPod bother to market the thing. To me the release of the iPhone is important, not because it's a marvel of technology that deserves to be queued up for in the cold, but because it should give a kick up the arses to HTC et al about how this market should have been theirs by now, but they will watch the PDA/Phone market slip through their fingers unless they do something about it.
The Polaris looks a good step in the right direction, although it's still a bit ugly, but is anyone gonna queue up for it's release? It's the better phone compared to the iPod, but which will we see on the shelves of Phones 4 U and CPW.
This is going to become my next upgrade
Artemis has got a 2.8" Screen, will Polaris really have a 3,5" one???
Since it looks exactly like the artemis i cant believe this. If the display is larger the whole thing would be scaled up by 25%... I hope this is a typing mistake or something.
just made a image to compare sizes:
left is artemis (2.8'' screen), right is polaris (3.5'' screen)
What the iPhone is ahead is the multi-touch screen
If those stats are true, that phone is a beast.
pocketnow.com has a newer concept picture (obviously CG) that is intriguing. In this concept it is using a flush screen like the touch. With the ability to get closer to the edges of the phone it might be less bulky than the scaled picture above.
If that is the case it is going to be a hard choice between the Kaiser and the Polaris. Time will tell I guess.

I don't think it is just wishful thinking, most of HTC's large devices have full sized SD card slots.
This device is definately an Iphone-killer - whoo-ha.
If the people at HTC would get touchflo better implemented...
(there are still "breaks" in the handling of the device where you have to take out the stylus and click on small buttons or use the d-pad...)
For instance you touch to the photos:
Once you open a photo you can´t scroll through all your pictures without using the d-pad - why?
But HTC seems to be on the way... hopefully Tochflo 2.0 solves this and some other issues...
Mic
I did like the look of the iphone at first, it did seem very well done, smooth. Like it all worked together. And with the OS at 700mb I should think so too.
However it has some major MAJOR flaws.
First, no 3G. Which for a phone ahead of its time its not even keeping up with the now.Then there is the lack of MMS. Yup, this future, super advanced phone cant do MMS.
Then the lack of 3rd Party apps. The killer of all. They tie you into a 2 year contract and you cant install your own apps. What about expense tracking? What about en eWallet and WHAT ABOUT GPS!
So apple are saying, their phone which is 5 years ahead of everything else cant do GPS and the other stuff my artemis can? Weird.
Yes the screen is nice and the multi touch too. But that doenst make it ahead of the rest.
If I could have tomtom on it I may be tempted to switch. But its a closed system. Its the reason MACs arnt mainstream and the Commodore Amiga died. Closed architecture is a death sentence to every thing. Closed architecture suits the old folk who just want something to do what it was designed to. I personally love the tweaking and making it do what I want it to.
Bring on the Polaris. Just needs WM7 and its sorted.
Looks like it'll be a super-beefed up artemis rather than a large version which is what I hoped for.

Got a Blackberry Javelin

Hey guys, bought finally a Blackberry Javelin (Curve 8900) and want to share my initial impressions. Maybe of interest for you because you like the BB form factor in general. I think the classic Blackberry form factor employed in all wide BBs, the BlackJack and the Excalibur is the best form for a phone.
Had Blackbarrys from my company for years, then the BlackJack great phone with worse speaker quality (very low volume) more than a year, tried the Excalibur now as I wrote in another post. Great phone with excellent xda-dev-support. But still some weaknesses. So I bought the Javelin in a weak moment:
Pros
- Excellent hardware & build quality, small, tight, solid, round, smooth, much better than the bold which has its name for a good reason. Better materials than most phones.
- The keyboard rocks. No other keyboard matches this keyboard, even better than the Bold because less finger movements required. The old Treos come very close (680, 750). Perfect form, space within keys and hub => short and crisp hub. Blackjack was too hard to press, Excalibur too long hub and wobbly feeling, Treo to round, but similar crisp hub and space between keys.
- The trackball, so precise and fast, EPIX could match, but the software implementation of the touchpad isn't on par with RIMs trackball implementation.
- Great screen, not the Touch Diamonds resolution but it's near
- Great UI, really!. After a days you understand how many thoughts the RIM engineers made, e.g.: the Media Player is despite keylock fully accessible, shortcuts everywhere like R for reply, overall you are pretty fast with the OS.
- Slick and unobtrusive GUI design
Cons
- No ActiveSync OTA only expensive BIS/BES service
- No xda-dev community instead somehow weird BB forums
- Feels somehow closed/undocumented like a black box, couldn't get Google Maps to work, maybe because of missing BIS/BES service
- Browser is for a BB browser very, very good but doesn't match latest Opera on Touch Diamond.
- A2DP sound quality good but cannot be tweaked to the max as with WM devices.
- No 3G but EDGE
If you ask me to choose one phone, I couldn't decide for one (currently the Javelin and the Touch Diamond, because there's no up-to-date WM phone with BB form factor). Overall the WM phone is capable of everything and a lot of stuff can be done a little better (e.g. A2DP quality tweaking) and the UI of WM6 plus Touch Flow isn't that bad. The Javelin is a rock-solid experience, hardware and software are seamlessly put together, better than by the iPhone done. I miss some features with the Javelin but at the end of the day the core and few non-core phone features like cam and media are prefectly realized. At the moment I use both phones with multiple SIMs depending on my mood.
Oh nice thanks for putting this information together. This could be very useful from some who are deciding to upgrade their dash.
Not ever, not in a trillion billion years. No blackberry has nor will one ever be held to my head.

lol, well I went out on a limb, I have a strong personal dislike for the BB
crackberry
THE only thing in my opinion that the BBs have that is any good is their tracball, that's it. My buddy from work has a curve/javelin and I think it sucks, that's just my opinion, not trying to disrespect anyone, cause when we were comparing phones ,even though he loves his bberry, he was amazed at how much customizability and how much more fun the dash is. That's all.
Yah the trackball is amazing, I got to give that to you...

This is my second HD3 Concept. I made the first one (link) in February 2010 - back then people didn't knew much about Windows Phone 7. I thought it's going to be similar to 6.5.x and that - at some point - we'll be able to flash it on our current devices.
That's why I came up with a phone running Windows Mobile 7 and which looked like a kitchen knife (and what's with that huge weather animation?! ).
The Concept got some attention and was mentioned on several websites and blogs all over the world. That's when I learned that Google Translate has no problems translating "What an ugly phone!" from Russian and Turkish to English. Although I designed it for my graphic novel which takes place in 2015, my futuristic HD3 specifications were taken seriously so I was heavily criticized for the hardware.
Now, a few months later, I present to you my latest HD3 Concept.
Since everyone would like to see different specs I've decided to give you guys a chance of writing your own. I will update the threat with realistic specifications written by someone who knows what he/she's talking about.
As you can see, my new HD3 has two Build-in Speakers on both sides of the screen (I really liked that about my previous concept), a front facing Camera, HDMI output and a Micro-USB port. There are 6 hardware buttons (Power, Volume Up and Down and 3 WP7 buttons). You can come up with the rest.
I decided to make WP7 more customizable so I skinned it with Sense 3 (do you REALLY think HTC would release a phone without Sense? I know Microsoft claims that all WP7 devices should use Metro, but Sense is HTC's trademark). Of course you could still change the wallpaper:

Finally, before you start complaining about the hardware buttons, he's an alternative version with buttons that would give actual feedback (though I think they make the phone look ugly):
Took 15 hours to complete. Enjoy!
it looks awesome.
Looks pretty nice, good job.
Damn! Wish WP7 did look like this!
Just... Just Amazing! Need it! Well done!
Great design
Wow! awesome design! You just missed the HTC logo on top.
I was hoping someone would come through with a vision i had.
Surely yours is wayyyyyyy better than what i imagined but i said a while back
win phone 7 could look decent if it had some photoshop and glossy eyecandy icons.
Your concept just blew my mind away because it fulfilled the glossy eyecandy look but youve managed to do subtle things that i didnt even think of.
Great work. Great concept.

I second that. HTC and MS make it happen.
I'd pre-order it.
It's a bit over the boundaries of what's possible with the tiles. Also I think changing the default circle buttons is a very bad idea, as it destroys the uniform layout of the entire platform.
The design language for WP7 is not just for the home-screen, but also applications, which is important to take in consideration for a custom layout.
hmm on 1st two images there is soft keys below but on the last they look pretty hardware ...

The point is that it's NOT a good idea to make a home-screen that's not using the design language of the rest of the platform.
Designing isn't about fancy colors, gradients, and bevels. It's also about usability, uniformness, and easy recognition.
Anyone can do a fancy layout, but it's few who can create a overall design language for a entire platform. And this is why Sense UI doesn't make awful lot of sense on the WP7.

im not sure how his concept would be less easy to recognize, but even if it is o well it looks great, id rather have black tiles then any of the colors they provide anyway
Yeah, the black/yellow theme is likely the option HTC will go with as default.
But I'm more explicit thinking of the circular buttons used for navigation and the application bar. It's preferable if they stay as a single stroke color used for the vector graphics used everywhere else on the platform.
Because the thing is, opposed to previous phones, HTC can't make a "Sense" theme apply so deep into the phone, as the otherwise would, as most buttons are vector graphics directly in XAML, and not replaceable images, and most Hubs are applications, and not style-able widgets.

You're taking this far too seriously. I'm obviously not working for HTC and I wasn't payed to create your vision of how WP7 and Sensu UI should look. Just like you or anyone else I have my own vision. The only difference is that I made the effort to make it "real" on some level and decided to share it with the XDA community. I think you're just being rude.
It's not like this is a preview of a real skin for WP7 that I'll be working on.
You're rather strange if you would consider 2-3 pages of praises to be a good response to your work. Criticism is the only way to improve, and being taught a bit about why the design language is important, from a application developers point of view, should help you think your layouts though, beyond what's just a fancy home-screen.
Nobody's denying it looks good, but looks is not even the half of it.

Nokia will be able to customize 'everything' in Windows Phone 7

Stephen Elop, in his financial and strategy briefing continuing Nokia's marathon Capital Markets Day, just posed an interesting rhetorical question: will Nokia be able to "customize everything" on Windows Phone 7 in order to differentiate itself? "Yes!" was Elop's ebullient proclamation, though he quickly pulled it back to say that Nokia likely won't make extensive use of this freedom to tailor Microsoft's OS. Instead, the company will be cautious and seek to maintain compatibility rather than pushing the boat out too far in tweaking the underlying software. That's a major shift for Microsoft, who forbade HTC from skinning Windows Phone 7 with Sense, something the Taiwanese company would surely have loved to do, and limited it to the introduction of a self-contained Hub. Now Nokia's saying it -- perhaps exclusively -- has been given the liberty to play around inside WP7 to its heart's content. We'll see how important that turns out to be whenever Nokia delivers its first device bearing its new smartphone OS. An insider tip tells us the current plan is to introduce such a handset by the end of 2011, potentially based on current hardware. Who's ready for Xbox Live on a future version of the N8?
Source: Endgadget http://www.engadget.com/2011/02/11/nokia-will-be-able-to-customize-everything-in-windows-phone-7/
Does this mean tht v can have hope of getting in deeper thru the roots of WP7, as nokia will surely hav a foot in, all v hav to do is follow them in...right? bt the only thing is tht the "microkia's" are still a lil far off. by then v probably wil already be down inside...eh...
Hope they won't change much。。。
Nokia Maps, Nokia Navigation etc. Those would be the most important things... And a look like this!

A few more edges would be fine...I don't like this rounded design.
But, if these will have free Ovi Maps Navigation and those ultra clear black AMOLED-screen, I'd definitely go for them!
Hopefully they don't change a whole lot other than maybe apps. We've seen how multiple UIs has affected the fragmentation and performance of Android. If it's properly executed, and we have the option to use the standard Metro UI, I'm up for it, and as long as it doesn't hog the CPU performance any different than current devices, I'm up for possibly purchasing it. The reason why WP7, at least to me, is so appealing is because it runs so fluid and has a "togetherness" feel to it. All of the apps, the menus, etc all have the same design to them while not detracting from variety of apps.

Does this mean tht v can have hope of getting in deeper thru the roots of WP7, as nokia will surely hav a foot in, all v hav to do is follow them in...right? bt the only thing is tht the "microkia's" are still a lil far off. by then v probably wil already be down inside...eh...

Look what we've found! This is the first image you'll see anywhere of the early fruit of Microsoft and Nokia's budding new partnership. We have it on good authority that the technicolor phones on show are conceptual devices produced by the two companies. You shouldn't, therefore, go jumping to conclusions about retail hardware just yet, but hearts should be warmed by the familiarity of Nokia's new design -- the shape of these handsets is somewhere between its recent N8 and C7 Symbian devices and there is, as usual for Nokia, a choice of sprightly colors. The trio of keys adorning the new concept's bottom give away its Windows Phone 7 ties, but also remind us that the N8 and E7 are highly unlikely to receive any WP7 upgrade love. The best part about this whole discovery, however, might be that it confirms Steve Ballmer's assertion that the engineers of both companies have "spent a lot of time on this already."

Damn this is exciting, isnt it...m sure things r about to go into top gear for WP7 n microsoft/nokia...while apple wil probably just end up whining about everything...wat say? as for these "microkia's", they r beautiful...i kno i want one...n i want one now!!! m sure most of u do.
They look awesome!
I hope they make something like these, I can see myself with the b;ack one and the wife with one of the pretty coloured ones!!!
exactly my thoughts...the black one looks quite 'orgasmic'...
How wrong I am, wife prefers the black one!
the black one rocks.... but mostly because the damned tiles aren't showing... anyone else notice this?
Just fu***** beautiful,i want the Black version
Saw these on engadget this morning, badass looking phones
I hope they bring back the old "Fascia" things they had on the 3310s etc and have multiple back covers available for you to buy in different colours and designs.
I want the black one but with black tiles!!!

Black background and white tiles !!
Gorgeous. Lets hope they will produce them as we see them.
The problem is how long will it take Microkia to make it to market. They will be in trouble if they cannot make it before this holiday.
Gotta say... I think I see the phones of the future...
black one looking gr8....
Now I like this quite a bit, but it kinda looks like my Focus...
That was my thought. This looks almost like a Samsung Focus. At least the front of top are very close. The rear is tapered which I do like a little more.
Hopefully, we'll be seeing even more designs from Nokia (hardware keyboard hint, hint).
Hey guys, guess what, the concepts hav just been officialy shown at MWC by nokia...they r real, n possibly coming this year itself...
Nokia hints we'll see first Windows Phone 7 device this year!!!
Nokia may still sticking to the official line that it will begin shipping Windows Phone 7 devices in "significant volume" in 2012, but it just dropped a big hint at its Mobile World Congress press conference that we could be seeing the first device even sooner -- like this year. That word came from Nokia's Jo Harlow, who said that her boss would be "much happier" if the timing of the initial launch was in 2011. As you can see above, Nokia's also kindly confirmed that leaked Windows Phone 7 concept that we just got our hands on Friday, and it's shed yet more light on the behind the scenes intrigue that led up to the switch to Windows Phone 7. According to Stephen Elop, the "final decision" to go with Windows Phone "just happened on Thursday night of last week." Elop then later then expanded -- in response to a question audience about whether he was a trojan horse -- that the "entire management team" was involved in the process, and that "of course the board of directors of Nokia are the only ones that can make this significant of a decision about Nokia," which they made on Thursday night.

I read this article in the main Windows Phone 7 section and I have to say it is exciting news.
Not only are Nokia providing their expert knowledge in hardware which will only make WP7 better to use but they will also be combining Ovi Stores with Windows Market Place. This means the famous Ovi Maps with voice guidance and the ability to download maps to SD card for offline useage will be available as well as other applications which were bought out on Symbian.
Nokia has also divided the company now into two businesses. One for mobile phone development and the other for smart phones such as WP7, Symbian and Meego. Some people are saying this is because Nokia fear a takeover from Microsoft but it certainly looks like Nokia are taking no chances.
