This is my second HD3 Concept. I made the first one (link) in February 2010 - back then people didn't knew much about Windows Phone 7. I thought it's going to be similar to 6.5.x and that - at some point - we'll be able to flash it on our current devices.
That's why I came up with a phone running Windows Mobile 7 and which looked like a kitchen knife (and what's with that huge weather animation?! ).
The Concept got some attention and was mentioned on several websites and blogs all over the world. That's when I learned that Google Translate has no problems translating "What an ugly phone!" from Russian and Turkish to English. Although I designed it for my graphic novel which takes place in 2015, my futuristic HD3 specifications were taken seriously so I was heavily criticized for the hardware.
Now, a few months later, I present to you my latest HD3 Concept.
Since everyone would like to see different specs I've decided to give you guys a chance of writing your own. I will update the threat with realistic specifications written by someone who knows what he/she's talking about.
As you can see, my new HD3 has two Build-in Speakers on both sides of the screen (I really liked that about my previous concept), a front facing Camera, HDMI output and a Micro-USB port. There are 6 hardware buttons (Power, Volume Up and Down and 3 WP7 buttons). You can come up with the rest.
I decided to make WP7 more customizable so I skinned it with Sense 3 (do you REALLY think HTC would release a phone without Sense? I know Microsoft claims that all WP7 devices should use Metro, but Sense is HTC's trademark). Of course you could still change the wallpaper:

Finally, before you start complaining about the hardware buttons, he's an alternative version with buttons that would give actual feedback (though I think they make the phone look ugly):
Took 15 hours to complete. Enjoy!

it looks awesome.

Looks pretty nice, good job.

Damn! Wish WP7 did look like this!

Just... Just Amazing! Need it! Well done!

Great design
Wow! awesome design! You just missed the HTC logo on top.

I was hoping someone would come through with a vision i had.
Surely yours is wayyyyyyy better than what i imagined but i said a while back
win phone 7 could look decent if it had some photoshop and glossy eyecandy icons.
Your concept just blew my mind away because it fulfilled the glossy eyecandy look but youve managed to do subtle things that i didnt even think of.
Great work. Great concept.

I second that. HTC and MS make it happen.

I'd pre-order it.

It's a bit over the boundaries of what's possible with the tiles. Also I think changing the default circle buttons is a very bad idea, as it destroys the uniform layout of the entire platform.
The design language for WP7 is not just for the home-screen, but also applications, which is important to take in consideration for a custom layout.

hmm on 1st two images there is soft keys below but on the last they look pretty hardware ...

look sick
htc and microsoft NEED to see this

this is nice, I mite giving up a super amoled screen for this

now thats pretty awesome thats imagination at work

The point is that it's NOT a good idea to make a home-screen that's not using the design language of the rest of the platform.
Designing isn't about fancy colors, gradients, and bevels. It's also about usability, uniformness, and easy recognition.
Anyone can do a fancy layout, but it's few who can create a overall design language for a entire platform. And this is why Sense UI doesn't make awful lot of sense on the WP7.

im not sure how his concept would be less easy to recognize, but even if it is o well it looks great, id rather have black tiles then any of the colors they provide anyway

Yeah, the black/yellow theme is likely the option HTC will go with as default.
But I'm more explicit thinking of the circular buttons used for navigation and the application bar. It's preferable if they stay as a single stroke color used for the vector graphics used everywhere else on the platform.
Because the thing is, opposed to previous phones, HTC can't make a "Sense" theme apply so deep into the phone, as the otherwise would, as most buttons are vector graphics directly in XAML, and not replaceable images, and most Hubs are applications, and not style-able widgets.

You're taking this far too seriously. I'm obviously not working for HTC and I wasn't payed to create your vision of how WP7 and Sensu UI should look. Just like you or anyone else I have my own vision. The only difference is that I made the effort to make it "real" on some level and decided to share it with the XDA community. I think you're just being rude.
It's not like this is a preview of a real skin for WP7 that I'll be working on.

You're rather strange if you would consider 2-3 pages of praises to be a good response to your work. Criticism is the only way to improve, and being taught a bit about why the design language is important, from a application developers point of view, should help you think your layouts though, beyond what's just a fancy home-screen.
Nobody's denying it looks good, but looks is not even the half of it.

HTC DIAMOND stuff is ugly.

I keep downloading roms (no offense to the cookers) but why is everyone bent on using that ugly htc diamond theme? I mean really we have hundred thousand color touchscreens, with high resolution and there are black / grey icons on the HTC home plugin? What about the 70's alarm clock "clockface" that I keep seeing everywhere? Who thought up that hurly looking eyesore? Lets get some color in there. And a black background is just a sin with these beautiful screens.
I'm not opposed to busting out photoshop and doing anyone a favor. If you are creating a rom right now, and are looking for a "new look" to your interface, give me a hollar. I am an interface designer by trade. Lets really get these phones looking good!
Heres some of my work for my own interface software. Granted its not what I plan on doing on a phone, but I'm just saying the skills are there. I'd just like to put them to use for "someone". I can't really do it without a chef!

Dude I totally agree with you. In fact the way its been lately, everytime I flash a new ROM and see a Diamond-based theme by default, I cringe and quickly change it. I honestly do not see the appeal of the Diamond theme (my opinion, I know).
I like the new Diamond Home screen... the clock and icons are much better looking.
OMG AMEN!!!
The thing is, the black theme is slick, simple and clean.
Not too much of anything, discreet. That's what people apparently like.
Not to mention of course that for marketing purposes, black is not considered as the color of death (which is actually) but the color that represents luxury.
In other words, having a black theme gives the impression of having something expensive. Good job marketing guys
So, maybe the clock can be changed, not something I really fancy, but it's kinda "oldschool", you now that's hype...
Everything is a question of trend...
I personally like it, that's not to say it isn't being overused.. but non the less. I just prefer a simple black screen.
here's something for you

lots of color
Wow, theres like 10 diffrent themes included with that ROM.
Me personaly, I like the black theme with the white oldschool clock and new icons. It just looks really classy and retro.

Design is always subjective. I do prefer the Diamond theme. Clean and simple. I hate the screen with so many colors and graphics. Just that there are millions of colors we can use doesn't mean we should use them all. A bit amateur to me. No offence to everyone, I hope.

He he full use of the screen real estate eh bro? I like it simple. Plus I don't use GPS as I have one in my car lol.
I agree with OP....Black is not only boring to me, but I feel like it's the hardest color to see when your outside!
I like Poorly Duck's Vista theme....i think the chef's getting together with the designer's is a GREAT idea....nothing i'd love more than not having to customize every interface after a flash...one less thing to do
Colors
Well, you can use the diamond stuff but it doesn't have to be black
There are "peaceful" ways to use color without creating an eyesore. We all know there are common rules to follow when creating a color scheme. Anyone who has painted a house knows that.
As long as you follow those trends, you can add all the color you want without any distractions.
yeah black is nice and cool and elegant, especially if you work as an executive hehehe. Simplicity is what you call it. Colorful themes are for those little kids hehehe joke only, no offense....to each his own dude.
Just do your stuff and stop bashing other people's hardworks
PS: yeah....there are lots of Diamond themes there that are not necessarily black, and still looks great

"HTC Hero is the world’s first Android-based phone with a
customized user interface
HTC Sense to be integrated across a portfolio of
phones beginning with HTC Hero
LONDON – June 24, 2009 – HTC Corporation, a global designer of mobile phones, today debuted HTC Sense™, an intuitive and seamless experience that will be introduced across a portfolio of phones beginning with the new HTC Hero™. With its distinct design and powerful capabilities fully integrated with HTC Sense, Hero introduces a unique blend of form and function that takes Android to new heights.
HTC Sense is focused on putting people at the centre, by making your phone work in a more simple and natural way. This experience revolves around three fundamental principles that were designed by quietly observing and listening to how people live and communicate.
‘HTC Hero introduces a more natural way for reaching out to people and accessing your important information, not by following the status quo of today’s phones, but by following how you communicate and live your life,’ said Peter Chou, Chief Executive Officer, HTC Corporation. ”HTC Sense is a distinct experience created to make HTC phones more simple for people to use, leaving them saying, “it just makes sense.”’
HTC Hero
HTC Hero continues HTC’s leadership in cutting-edge design that focuses on introducing a variety of distinct devices to represent your own individuality. Boasting bevelled edges and an angled bottom, the HTC Hero is contoured to fit comfortably in your hand and against your face while you’re on a call. The HTC Hero is built to last, beginning with an anti-fingerprint screen coating for improved smudge-resistance and a longer-lasting, clearer display. The white HTC Hero includes an industry-first, Teflon coating, resulting in an improved, durable white surface that is soft to the touch.
With its 3.2-inch HVGA display, the HTC Hero is optimized for Web, multimedia and other content, while maintaining a small size and weight that fits comfortably in your hand. It also boasts a broad variety of hardware features including AGPS, digital compass, gravity-sensor, 3.5mm stereo headset jack, a five mega-pixel autofocus camera and expandable MicroSD memory. HTC Hero also includes a dedicated Search button that goes beyond basic search, providing you with a more natural, contextual search experience that enables you to search through Twitter, locate people in your contact list, find emails in your inbox or search in any other area in Hero.
HTC Sense
Built on a culture of innovation and a passion to enhance people’s lives, HTC shapes the mobile experience around the individual. Debuting on the HTC Hero and available on all new HTC devices moving forward, Sense delivers on three basic principles: Make it Mine, Stay Close and Discover the Unexpected.
Make It Mine
Make It Mine is about feeling your HTC phone was created for and by you. To do this, HTC encourages you to dictate and organize how you want to access the people and content in your life in a way that fits best for you. For some, this means adding glance-view widgets that push content like twitter feeds, weather and other content to the surface while others may want quick access to business-focused information like email, calendar and world-times. HTC is also introducing a new profile feature called ‘Scenes’ that enables you to create different customized content profiles around specific functions or times in your life.
Stay Close
Today, staying in touch with the people in your life means managing a variety of communication channels and applications ranging from phone calls, emails, texts, photos, status updates and more. HTC Sense takes a different approach by integrating these communication channels and applications into one single view, enabling you to stay closer to your important people. With HTC Sense, friends’ Facebook status updates and photos, along with their Flickr photos are included alongside their text messages, emails and call history in a single view.
Discover the Unexpected
Many of the most memorable moments in your life are experienced, not explained. HTC Sense is focused on providing a variety of these simple yet innovative experiences on your HTC phone that will sometimes bring you moments of joy and delight. It can be something as basic as turning the phone over to silence a ring or as simple as improving the smart dialler for making calls quicker. HTC Sense also includes ‘Perspectives’, a new way for viewing your content such as email, photos, Twitter, music and more in different ways.
Availability
The HTC Hero will be available to people across Europe in July and in Asia later in the summer. A distinct North American version will be available later in 2009."

Looks sweet. Hope it won't take too long to be ported over to our HD's
Not of sure if I made myself clear, will be available for both Android and WM, so port should be very quick once the cabs can be extracted from a WM device.
this is what i allways disliked about TF3D
WOW! looks nice!! lets hope they can keep the RAM usage down!
Always hated TF3D for lack of customization. This seems really to change all that.
Thanks for the promising news
Regards
/Frewys
Amazing interface. Can't wait to get this it. I was working an a more iphone-esque interface (iHd) but if this can get ported then I would give up on that. Looks brilliant.
Hopefully HTC will encourage third party widgets and we can get lots of functionality in this UI.

+ 1 for that, fingers crossed!
Was using manilla!!! Sucked for a while! When i moved to ms3..manilla got better and alsmost perfect in a sence!! Then i disliked some functions of ms3 and moved over titanium inteface that in the newer builds is fast, stable and fully custom! I liked it!Once i settled down..(as i thought!) now that !!... Man i cant wait!
htc bringin' the 'wow' effect to winmo devices ^^
The information out is conflicting: WMowerusers is saying Sense UI will come to WM Devices. IntoMobile is quoting MobileBurn, which says that it will NOT be coming to WM.
Hard to say for now.
We need a public press release from HTC.
Personally I won't believe until it it's out, hacked and available in cooked ROMs
Really looking for to this being ported, looks amazing!!
although until then i would like something to pass the time....

Thanks anyway....
Cant wait for this new UI!!

Hmm there's something strange about that chart. One of those columns just doesn't look like the other three. Wonder if options were made to reflect that?
When I made the chart, I tried to find as many categories as possible. I did not think about opinions, I just tried to collect facts.
The coulouring was done AFTER the original chart. Thus, the chart itself is in no way influenced by my opinion.
If you think categories are missing, please tell me! I want as many facts as possible, regardless of which OS they favor.
That said, I did do the colouring according to my opinion. I did not color one column after another, thus I also did not deliberately colour one of them with more green than others.
I think my methods are as balanced as they can possibly be.
If you have another opinion, feel free to colour the chart differently!
(there is no copyright )
Again: Feel free to colour the chart differently, to show your opinions!
Please don't flame each others' opinions! State your own opinions by colouring the chart, but fon't flame!
Also, if you think categories are missing, please tell me!
Anyone with knowledge want to add Symbian?
I hear Nokia plan to release a few great devices, but I don't know enough about Symbian, unfortunately.
I think it all depends on your view of each item. I don't think most of them can be shown as pure green or red, except maybe on the items that either have it or they don't. For example you may say full multitasking on OS is green but what comes with that? More apps may bog the system down or make the battery not last as long. I know on my Touch Pro2 I always kill an app from the task manager when I close it because I don't want it to effect anything like that. So in someone else's eyes full multitasking may not be a good thing. And differences in opinion can go either way on most of those. So yes that is your opinion and I respect it but I'll stick to the chart without color for a less biased view of the OS's.

You know what, I really cannot believe that people on this forum are even having this discussion.
UNIX was a multi-user, multi-tasking operating system RELEASED IN 1969.
That's 40 YEARS AGO.
So if you try and take the M$/Apple side on this argument, it's tantamount to admitting that technology should take a 40 year step backwards, and that you honestly believe that the development of timesharing/multi-tasking, which reinvented computing and made it accessible to every person, was a bad thing.
@Kloc
Wasn't that disclaimer big enough? Didn't I say it's purely MY OPINION?!
What the f*** is so hard to understand about that?!
I want multitasking, that's why it's green.
I want customization, that's why it's green.
I hate iTunes, that's why it's red.
And so on. If you have a different opinion, you can make your own colours!
I encourage you to state your own opinion (for example taky my chart and change the colours), but mine is NOT up for discussion!
The coloured chart represents my own, very personal opinion! NOTHING ELSE.
That is why I do not post it in the first post of this thread. The chart in the first post is NOT coloured, because it is FREE FROM OPINIONS.
Everybody is able to take the NON-COLOURED chart and from his own opinion.

Yes and Apple and MS's OS's are both multitasking and multithreaded OS's. Just beause they won't allow everyone to use it doesn't mean it can't. Non multitasking systems are something like old DOS. You go to print a document and you have to wait until the entire thing is printed before you can do something else. These systems are nothing like that. They are trying to innovate how multitasking is used in order to have effeicency on their devices.

This is some concept that was found in someones bin. It was most likely done during lunch break as a joke. In fact I'd say its quite old.

That is one of the most terrible UI designs I have ever seen in my life.
0% chance of this being pushed onto the market.
I don't like it to , but if we know how to change the uix format we could make everything possible , the ui is a grapical interface ( see it like a gameplay)
would be real cool if we could find out if they realy changed the uix or that it just is a mockup ( when they realy shanged the uix then I would love the have the files )
Looks like new UI for Symbian or MeeGo

Nokia actually does have permission to edit the UI. Highly doubt they will though as it'll be a lot of effort for what? Someone from Nokia said they rather just spend that time making apps than modding the UI

I agree, I've found the DLL that contains the "Start Screen" uix/uib files. Just wish I had a way to open & edit them. It'd basically be the same thing as editing cHome CPR's as it's still an xml type layout with scripting added. People have edited these files before in Messenger/Zune, but the format has changed. I just changed my Zune's background.
Nokia does NOT have permission to edit the UI.
Only hubs, and apps. Just like the other OEMs.

The article this post is about, it specifically states they do have permission;
Remember that on Feb. 16, 2011, at the "Windows Phone Day" seminar, when asked if they would change the Windows Phone UI, Nokia's Chief Technology Officer, Rich Greene, said:
'We certainly do, in the context of this agreement, have the right to manipulate the UX, the UI, etc. but...I'm not speaking for the plan, I'm speaking as the Chief Technology Officer: Why would you? Let me clarify.

Now if only there were someone @ Nokia who could "leak" the tools they have to edit the files...

It specifically states she;
This particular designer was transferred from Nokia to Accenture in September of 2011, so it's very likely that she is no longer working on Windows Phone UI designs since Accenture is the company that Nokia is now outsourcing all of their Symbian related work to.

""We certainly do, in the context of this agreement," Greene said, "have the right to manipulate the UX, the UI, etc."
This led some to believe that Nokia has the ability to create a custom skin for Windows Phone, but this is not true. A spokesman for Microsoft's Window Phone team confirmed to Crave this week what we were told from the very beginning--that like the rest of the handset manufacturers, Nokia can only customize the OS through hubs and applications, and making any changes to the actual UI is not allowed."

The question remains, who is right? You can't take either persons' word. Would need to see the actually contract that was signed to see who is right. So, what can be said is Nokia may or may not have this right, which remains to be seen.
I still tend to believe they do as why else would they have tools to edit the UIX/UIB files to create this mock-up shown. MS wouldn't just give those tools to just anyone.

I can agree with that. No one knows, and they haven't actually modified anything.

Its just that, a mock up. Nothing more, and it was made in spare time as a side project.

I would assume that Nokia do have the right to edit the UI, they have been given some higher permissions than other OEMs and Microsoft would have offered them quite a bit to make the jump (they've been trying to persuade nokia to get on the Windows hype since Windows Mobile 6.0).
I wouldn't think of anything as drastic in this thread though... I do see it likely that they change the font to Nokia Pure and small tweaks like that.
If Nokia's change that to the interface.... I would not buy one...
One you said "she" I was going to say...Oh there's your problem but, I figured I would get in trouble for a comment like that...sorry if anyone took offence...
but, Man, that UI is bad....
Hope Nokia does not go about skinning WP7. It would lead to same problems as major Android skinners - Samsung and HTC - phones.
We have to wait for ICS for 5 months because HTC has to develop a new version of Sense..

New CyanogenMod mascot: Cid

http://www.cyanogenmod.com/blog/introducing-cid
Preface:
“Why the change in Mascot? We loved Andy Bugdroid!”
A lot of people love Andy, our former skateboarding mascot. This was clearly evident with the polarized reviews to our announcement of selecting Caio’s prototype. We love Andy too, he has served us faithfully for close to 3 years now. However, he increasingly became a symbol of what CyanogenMod was when Steve (Cyanogen) started it, a ‘playful spin’ on AOSP, and reflective of our immaturity as a project.
We believe we’re more than just “stock Android for a zillion devices”, and we felt the need for a distinct identity; a change was needed.
This change would allow us to have a unique representative, one not reliant on Google’s mascot creation. Contrary to popular belief, both Andy and his penchant for skateboarding were Google’s design – we added the color and arrow under Creative Commons licensing, but it’s still a very slight variation of Google’s own bugdroid, as seen here. As much as we’d like to say it was ‘original’ it really wasn’t; its iconic status was achieved through the merits of CyanogenMod and our community of contributors, not as an epicly designed mascot.
This new mascot will be unique for CyanogenMod and provide an identity and attitude by which the project can continue to develop – a mature Android OS.
Inspiration for design:
We’ll let Caio speak for himself on this one:
“When I first started working on the new mascot I had this vision of making something that could also work as a polished and modern logo. I came up with two humanoid figures whose bodies took inspiration from heroes action figures and resembles the original Android robot. For the heads I started with two ideas: a power socket and a simplistic round head. I wanted CM’s own robot to feel like an evolution of what we had before, giving it its unique look – and it’s a huge challenge to try to evolve something people know and love.
The idea here was to create something cute (people love cute), modern and extremely flexible. Something simple yet iconic; so we could do thousands of different things with it. I wanted the mascot to look great everywhere in every size and color.
For colors I decided to keep the most obvious choice, which was keeping the cyan and grey from our Andy.”
Modifications:
As you can see, compared to the prototypes selected, some modifications have been made. Cid has ‘grown up’ from the child like form of the original design. Additionally, his head has taken traits from both prototypes, not quite a square block and not quite perfectly round.
While the wrench-like hands were unique, we felt trying to pitch them as ‘tweaking Android’ was a stretch, and went with the more subtle rounded hands. This allows for a cleaner look in many different forms, colors and applications.
Cid’s eyes were made wider, to allow for expressions to be conveyed, and a mouth was added to enhance this capability. The ears were added as an homage to the much loved Andy.
Caio’s opinion of the changes:
“When reviewing the design I felt the need for some distinctive features and we decided to give him some attitude and the ability to convey different emotions. Cid has big eyes and his default form rocks a challenging look — something the CM community is all about.”
And we think it looks great!
Cid (Pronounced: /si:d/):
When we started brainstorming names we wanted to pick something short, simple and fitting for the new mascot. Obviously trying to stray away from the *droid or *Andy type names we decided to pay homage to D.A.R.Y.L., B.O.B Maximillion or V.I.N.Cent and create a name that could also be an acronym.
We chose C.I.D. which is short for Cyanogenmod ID, the common thread that all CyanogenMod users share; each user’s unique place in our community.
Some of you may also be familiar with the concept of the “id”, the instinctual driving force behind our personalities. It seemed fitting, that this chaotic force and need for immediate gratification, was incorporated into the image of a OS which strives to be on the bleeding edge of Android development.
Thus C.I.D became Cid.

I like it too. Anybody want to start making some wallpapers with these?
I dig it; I may be a "mature" owner, but I'm glad they kept the skateboard. Reminds me that my skateboard has been gathering dust in the basement, time to hit the skate park. I intend to do a kick flip to hurricane grind while flashing the latest nightly.
I didn't like the old one, and I don't like the new one either. The first thing I do when I flash a Cyanogenmod ROM is change the boot animation.
Also, the skateboard is a throwback of the old Android boot screen. I remember seeing it on the G1.
nah, not sure if i like it :-/. i think it would be better if they had kept the android robot. still great rom
Honestly I'm still partial to the duck lol.
I love it

It looks creepy and weird to me, feels like they're now projecting a 'bad child' image or something, like Bart Simpson, I don't know.
I prefer the old logo since it was simple, easily identifiable, and was just plain fun to watch.
Oh wells, I still reboot in public places so people see my angry pink unicorn.
It's evil, and not in a good sense, when smiling.
I'm struggling to see why so many people are so upset about the change. Other than its a change.
Checkout the G+ post on the subject, it is depressing to see a group of people doing such amazing work, for free, to then have so much -ve babble written about something as unimportant as this. There are even people saying they will have to replace their boot animations - really - the new boot animation doesn't even exist yet!?
I'm not sure how long I've spent looking at old Andy - but it ain't long. He pops up at boot and then goes away till I reboot my phone again. So at most once a day with each nightly. The bottom line is the ROM is amazing, and will continue to be so regardless of what the mascot is.
I don't really mind what the mascot is - Cid looks cool, so does Andy - the ROM that they represent is even better though.
No one is saying anything negative about the ROM itself, the topic of discussion is the mascot change.
Everyone still loves the ROM, it's just the Mascot seems difficult to adapt too. It doesn't look friendly or inviting at all, it's just people identify to images, and with the new image it seems cold, evil, weird.
Andy was pleasantly plump, waving at you, on a skateboard, and made sure everything in your phone ran perfectly smooth. Cid feels like he might slit your throat when your sleeping if you're not careful.

it kinda gives me the creeps.
I imagine it thinking in a sinister voice "yeah sure flash me I promise you don't get stuck in a bootloop YUHAHAHAHAHA"
I actually like it. People find negatives in everything smh.
All this "Doesn't reflect maturity" **** is pathetic.
Sent from the future.
Looks too much like a power ranger.
People getting butthurt because people are getting butthurt over the the new logo...
butthurtception.
Anyway, I dont care for it ether. Dont really care ether. Im gonna use the same boot ani ive always used. It takes 60seconds to place the zip from my sdcard to the media folder.
At least it is not some pink animal.
