New CyanogenMod mascot: Cid - Samsung Galaxy Nexus

http://www.cyanogenmod.com/blog/introducing-cid
Preface:
“Why the change in Mascot? We loved Andy Bugdroid!”
A lot of people love Andy, our former skateboarding mascot. This was clearly evident with the polarized reviews to our announcement of selecting Caio’s prototype. We love Andy too, he has served us faithfully for close to 3 years now. However, he increasingly became a symbol of what CyanogenMod was when Steve (Cyanogen) started it, a ‘playful spin’ on AOSP, and reflective of our immaturity as a project.
We believe we’re more than just “stock Android for a zillion devices”, and we felt the need for a distinct identity; a change was needed.
This change would allow us to have a unique representative, one not reliant on Google’s mascot creation. Contrary to popular belief, both Andy and his penchant for skateboarding were Google’s design – we added the color and arrow under Creative Commons licensing, but it’s still a very slight variation of Google’s own bugdroid, as seen here. As much as we’d like to say it was ‘original’ it really wasn’t; its iconic status was achieved through the merits of CyanogenMod and our community of contributors, not as an epicly designed mascot.
This new mascot will be unique for CyanogenMod and provide an identity and attitude by which the project can continue to develop – a mature Android OS.
Inspiration for design:
We’ll let Caio speak for himself on this one:
“When I first started working on the new mascot I had this vision of making something that could also work as a polished and modern logo. I came up with two humanoid figures whose bodies took inspiration from heroes action figures and resembles the original Android robot. For the heads I started with two ideas: a power socket and a simplistic round head. I wanted CM’s own robot to feel like an evolution of what we had before, giving it its unique look – and it’s a huge challenge to try to evolve something people know and love.
The idea here was to create something cute (people love cute), modern and extremely flexible. Something simple yet iconic; so we could do thousands of different things with it. I wanted the mascot to look great everywhere in every size and color.
For colors I decided to keep the most obvious choice, which was keeping the cyan and grey from our Andy.”
Modifications:
As you can see, compared to the prototypes selected, some modifications have been made. Cid has ‘grown up’ from the child like form of the original design. Additionally, his head has taken traits from both prototypes, not quite a square block and not quite perfectly round.
While the wrench-like hands were unique, we felt trying to pitch them as ‘tweaking Android’ was a stretch, and went with the more subtle rounded hands. This allows for a cleaner look in many different forms, colors and applications.
Cid’s eyes were made wider, to allow for expressions to be conveyed, and a mouth was added to enhance this capability. The ears were added as an homage to the much loved Andy.
Caio’s opinion of the changes:
“When reviewing the design I felt the need for some distinctive features and we decided to give him some attitude and the ability to convey different emotions. Cid has big eyes and his default form rocks a challenging look — something the CM community is all about.”
And we think it looks great!
Cid (Pronounced: /si:d/):
When we started brainstorming names we wanted to pick something short, simple and fitting for the new mascot. Obviously trying to stray away from the *droid or *Andy type names we decided to pay homage to D.A.R.Y.L., B.O.B Maximillion or V.I.N.Cent and create a name that could also be an acronym.
We chose C.I.D. which is short for Cyanogenmod ID, the common thread that all CyanogenMod users share; each user’s unique place in our community.
Some of you may also be familiar with the concept of the “id”, the instinctual driving force behind our personalities. It seemed fitting, that this chaotic force and need for immediate gratification, was incorporated into the image of a OS which strives to be on the bleeding edge of Android development.
Thus C.I.D became Cid.

I like it. I hope one day we see a phone shipped from a factory with CM as the stock ROM

I like it too. Anybody want to start making some wallpapers with these?

I dig it; I may be a "mature" owner, but I'm glad they kept the skateboard. Reminds me that my skateboard has been gathering dust in the basement, time to hit the skate park. I intend to do a kick flip to hurricane grind while flashing the latest nightly.

I didn't like the old one, and I don't like the new one either. The first thing I do when I flash a Cyanogenmod ROM is change the boot animation.
Also, the skateboard is a throwback of the old Android boot screen. I remember seeing it on the G1.

nah, not sure if i like it :-/. i think it would be better if they had kept the android robot. still great rom

Honestly I'm still partial to the duck lol.

I love it

It looks creepy and weird to me, feels like they're now projecting a 'bad child' image or something, like Bart Simpson, I don't know.
I prefer the old logo since it was simple, easily identifiable, and was just plain fun to watch.
Oh wells, I still reboot in public places so people see my angry pink unicorn.

It's evil, and not in a good sense, when smiling.

I'm struggling to see why so many people are so upset about the change. Other than its a change.
Checkout the G+ post on the subject, it is depressing to see a group of people doing such amazing work, for free, to then have so much -ve babble written about something as unimportant as this. There are even people saying they will have to replace their boot animations - really - the new boot animation doesn't even exist yet!?
I'm not sure how long I've spent looking at old Andy - but it ain't long. He pops up at boot and then goes away till I reboot my phone again. So at most once a day with each nightly. The bottom line is the ROM is amazing, and will continue to be so regardless of what the mascot is.
I don't really mind what the mascot is - Cid looks cool, so does Andy - the ROM that they represent is even better though.

No one is saying anything negative about the ROM itself, the topic of discussion is the mascot change.
Everyone still loves the ROM, it's just the Mascot seems difficult to adapt too. It doesn't look friendly or inviting at all, it's just people identify to images, and with the new image it seems cold, evil, weird.
Andy was pleasantly plump, waving at you, on a skateboard, and made sure everything in your phone ran perfectly smooth. Cid feels like he might slit your throat when your sleeping if you're not careful.

it kinda gives me the creeps.
I imagine it thinking in a sinister voice "yeah sure flash me I promise you don't get stuck in a bootloop YUHAHAHAHAHA"

I actually like it. People find negatives in everything smh.
All this "Doesn't reflect maturity" **** is pathetic.
Sent from the future.

Looks too much like a power ranger.

People getting butthurt because people are getting butthurt over the the new logo...
butthurtception.
Anyway, I dont care for it ether. Dont really care ether. Im gonna use the same boot ani ive always used. It takes 60seconds to place the zip from my sdcard to the media folder.

At least it is not some pink animal.

To admins and mods: NEW XDA PORTAL IS AWESOME!!!

Hello
I just wanted to say thank you..
The new portal looks totally awesome
Whole site's new features are very usefull and it is very good
THANKS!!!
+1. Looks much better than before. Not to sound unappreciative, but can we maybe get a slicker looking skin for the vbulletin too?
I don't know if it is just me, of the portal looks like something out of engadget.com (Overrated and super biased towards everything Apple). I really don't like it that much although it is much cleaner and simple.
Just a personal opinion.

All opinions and suggesting are welcome. So if you have ideas to improve XDA porta...let us know
well the only thing I would change is the color scheme...
I kinda like black and blue...
and maybe the logo could be different...but apart from these, the new portal is totally awesome....very informative, I like the top threads and devices panel...really nice work guys!
Maybe you can make an XDA-developers logo contest...there sure are a lot of graphic artists here (I am myself)...so everyone can contribute and we can have some challenge and fun
What do you think?
Yeah, a logo contest would be great, there are indeed many talented people here. Also the design is a bit simplistic, not bad but could be better .
But do you really think Wordpress is good for such a big site, where there eventually should be user-submission, categorization and much more? Drupal or perhaps a custom CMS seems much better suited, I think.
Glad you guys generally like it. Coming up with a design to please as many people as possible was no easy task and we went through many versions. The front page is currently in beta mode, so not everything is working or looks right.
Our next project is a redesign of the forum to correspond with the new portal. That launch is a couple of weeks (or a bit more) away.
The new interface look wicked.
Thanks for all the work in throwing this together!
Knoc.
New Portal Launches Today
Congrats XDA!!!
Great young fresh looking!!!!

The echo system for comments makes me think of pocketnow.com
Great work guys! Tbh, the site was beginning to look ancient. Next a better forum skin
I guess with mass appeal comes mass market looks
My immediate suggestion is to lighten the main menu bar from the very dark brown to something more like the forums main menu color. It's easier on the eyes and brings the right amount of focus to it. Just like the pic attached.
I honestly don't like the look at all. It's too engadgety. I want this to be our OWN SITE! Something that includes everyone and not just Apple products.
Is it just me or doesn't the portal looks similar? Anyone?
Search bar, name font, menu links? Wow.
Maybe if we had a XDA-Developers logo contest, that'd be great. Really.
Please let us have a constest to design a better logo at least. Admins can set parameters such a colors and font size... etc...
New portal looks awesome especially compared to before! Great work....
+1 Plz dont mind i love xda so i want to be honest.... i also didnt liked the new theme or whatsoever.... it looks like a white page in which some thing is written not organised...
Plz change it and also the comment system extra that also should be changed i dont want it to be like other sites.... let xda be unique..
I think it looks great, and I also like the logo ... It's true, svetius, when tinkering with a site this huge, the # of opinions and disappointments you're going to get is huge.
Not that it matters re people's differing tastes and preferences, but for what it's worth, svetius, I'm also a UX Designer, and I think you've done a really clean job.
*BORAT* Whoa whoa whoa. How can I a get to this magical wizard portal?!
This is my 1st post, just wanted to say how useful this site is. Iv been educating myself about Android for the last 3 months, finally ordered myself a Hero today, i knew it was time to register.
1st thing I wanted to do was to say a big thanks but wasn't quite sure where to put it, thought this thread would be the most appropriate, appologies if there is an 'introductions' thread I missed.
Well im off to download all the tools i'l need for rooting and flashing roms now, hopefully my spanking new Hero will be here by Friday?
Wish me luck,... And once again, big up to all the mods and everyone who contributes to the forum.
Peace.
What software does it use? I have a Vbulletin forum and would love this kind of front page portal

This is my second HD3 Concept. I made the first one (link) in February 2010 - back then people didn't knew much about Windows Phone 7. I thought it's going to be similar to 6.5.x and that - at some point - we'll be able to flash it on our current devices.
That's why I came up with a phone running Windows Mobile 7 and which looked like a kitchen knife (and what's with that huge weather animation?! ).
The Concept got some attention and was mentioned on several websites and blogs all over the world. That's when I learned that Google Translate has no problems translating "What an ugly phone!" from Russian and Turkish to English. Although I designed it for my graphic novel which takes place in 2015, my futuristic HD3 specifications were taken seriously so I was heavily criticized for the hardware.
Now, a few months later, I present to you my latest HD3 Concept.
Since everyone would like to see different specs I've decided to give you guys a chance of writing your own. I will update the threat with realistic specifications written by someone who knows what he/she's talking about.
As you can see, my new HD3 has two Build-in Speakers on both sides of the screen (I really liked that about my previous concept), a front facing Camera, HDMI output and a Micro-USB port. There are 6 hardware buttons (Power, Volume Up and Down and 3 WP7 buttons). You can come up with the rest.
I decided to make WP7 more customizable so I skinned it with Sense 3 (do you REALLY think HTC would release a phone without Sense? I know Microsoft claims that all WP7 devices should use Metro, but Sense is HTC's trademark). Of course you could still change the wallpaper:

}
Finally, before you start complaining about the hardware buttons, he's an alternative version with buttons that would give actual feedback (though I think they make the phone look ugly):
Took 15 hours to complete. Enjoy!
it looks awesome.
Looks pretty nice, good job.
Damn! Wish WP7 did look like this!
Just... Just Amazing! Need it! Well done!
Great design
Wow! awesome design! You just missed the HTC logo on top.
I was hoping someone would come through with a vision i had.
Surely yours is wayyyyyyy better than what i imagined but i said a while back
win phone 7 could look decent if it had some photoshop and glossy eyecandy icons.
Your concept just blew my mind away because it fulfilled the glossy eyecandy look but youve managed to do subtle things that i didnt even think of.
Great work. Great concept.

I second that. HTC and MS make it happen.
I'd pre-order it.
It's a bit over the boundaries of what's possible with the tiles. Also I think changing the default circle buttons is a very bad idea, as it destroys the uniform layout of the entire platform.
The design language for WP7 is not just for the home-screen, but also applications, which is important to take in consideration for a custom layout.
hmm on 1st two images there is soft keys below but on the last they look pretty hardware ...
look sick
htc and microsoft NEED to see this
this is nice, I mite giving up a super amoled screen for this
now thats pretty awesome thats imagination at work

The point is that it's NOT a good idea to make a home-screen that's not using the design language of the rest of the platform.
Designing isn't about fancy colors, gradients, and bevels. It's also about usability, uniformness, and easy recognition.
Anyone can do a fancy layout, but it's few who can create a overall design language for a entire platform. And this is why Sense UI doesn't make awful lot of sense on the WP7.

im not sure how his concept would be less easy to recognize, but even if it is o well it looks great, id rather have black tiles then any of the colors they provide anyway
Yeah, the black/yellow theme is likely the option HTC will go with as default.
But I'm more explicit thinking of the circular buttons used for navigation and the application bar. It's preferable if they stay as a single stroke color used for the vector graphics used everywhere else on the platform.
Because the thing is, opposed to previous phones, HTC can't make a "Sense" theme apply so deep into the phone, as the otherwise would, as most buttons are vector graphics directly in XAML, and not replaceable images, and most Hubs are applications, and not style-able widgets.

You're taking this far too seriously. I'm obviously not working for HTC and I wasn't payed to create your vision of how WP7 and Sensu UI should look. Just like you or anyone else I have my own vision. The only difference is that I made the effort to make it "real" on some level and decided to share it with the XDA community. I think you're just being rude.
It's not like this is a preview of a real skin for WP7 that I'll be working on.
You're rather strange if you would consider 2-3 pages of praises to be a good response to your work. Criticism is the only way to improve, and being taught a bit about why the design language is important, from a application developers point of view, should help you think your layouts though, beyond what's just a fancy home-screen.
Nobody's denying it looks good, but looks is not even the half of it.

Annoyances - moved from iPhone

First, let me say up front I do not regret giving up my iPhone for the SGN2. I love this phone!
But it is not perfect. Some of my annoyances may very well be things about Android I just haven't learned yet. If that's the case, please educate me! Others are probably design or feature choices. If you know of a workaround, please share it.
1. No consistent, simple way to jump to the top of a list, page, or screen. I enabled the double-tap on the top of the phone (Settings | System | Motion | Double-tap to top) but that only works in a very few places. With the iPhone, tapping the top edge of the display provided a consistent solution.
2. I expected with the large display and high resolution to have more screen real estate on which information would be displayed. Instead all the display items (buttons, text boxes, etc.) are larger and the "Tiny" font isn't really. Sometimes I feel like I bought a remedial phone, kind of like the big print version of Readers Digest.
3. Along the same lines, why is it I can't find widgets that I can resize smaller in order to fit more information on my home screen?
4. Inflated ratings on the apps in the Play Store. Are there any 2-star rated apps? I've tried some 3- and 4-star rated apps that I would have rated no higher than 2-stars. But I have to say there certainly aren't any over-priced apps that I have run across.
5. There are Android ports or equivalents to almost all the apps I used regularly on my iPhone, but I'm sad I haven't found substitutes for some. I used Guitar Toolkit every day (for both guitar & ukulele). Thanks to forums I have found some lesser substitutes, but why do they all use midi sounds instead of actual samples of guitar & uke strings? I haven't found a substitute yet for iTunes but am still looking. And I have just begun my search for an equivalent to Camera+.
I really am fond of this phone, annoyances and all. To me, this is what the Apple Newton (anyone remember that?) would have been if Apple (Steve Jobs, actually) hadn't dropped the product after 2-3 years. I loved my Newtons which has caused me to form a strong emotional bond to this phone.
Anyone have their own annoyances--or solutions for mine?
Doug
1. There might be some application for this. Possibly. I'm not entirely sure. Android however, has complete flick scrolling. All you have to do is give it sufficient momentum, and you can fly to the top or bottom no problem. But I guess that isn't a solution really.
2 & 3. There isn't really an answer for this yet. It's bothering a lot of people. Once we get AOSP, we will hopefully get a port of ParanoidAndroid. Which will fix your issue. You can always turn down the LCD density in the build prop. But doing so will break most applications. You should be safe with setting it to 240.
4. The variety of Android phones is immense. And as such, people moving from an older model and installing the applications they are familiar with will notice an increase in performance from that application. People aren't looking at the quality of the application, but at how it affects them and their experience with it. Which is the only explanation for why Advanced Task Killer is still popular. Ignorance.
5. That happens. Some you won't find something that lives up to the iOS equivalent. Yet I've found applications that are on Android that are incredible and don't have a good iOS equivalent. Namely, PicsArt.
I don't like that the headphone jack is on the top.
And I really liked the backing and sides on the Galaxy Nexus, which I switched from to this phone. Really plasticky, not that I'm complaining. I just really enjoyed the feel of the Galaxy Nexus
I'm glad you like the phone. Be wary though, there are plenty of people on this site with an extreme hate for Apple and it's products. Though this particular forum is really well behaved, and I've only met nice people thus far. I haven't seen people attack each other for their beliefs or past yet. Knock on wood. Haha hope that helps, even though I only offered one solution to your issues.

Neither the iPhone 5 nor the iPad Mini measured up to what I was reading about in the Android world. And there was no turning back once I saw the specs and video reviews of the SGN2!
I may be late to the party but I've got my dancing shoes on now!

Yeah pressing the top is one of the most wanted features for me, at least when you flicker you finger faster then normal it goes up quicker or down so the helps in the browser. About the screen real state is really annoying to have only 4 apps down and 4 to the side I rooted my device mostly to help someone and put a mod for the screen, is better now

What do you think about the new Play Store?

I think the icons for the apps are way too big for our note. I personally think it was better before when we could actually see more apps before scrolling.
Eh... it definitely could show more on one page like it did before. I rarely go through lists of apps except for when setting up my phone after a flash. I did end up turning my phone sideways and then it showed the apps list similar to how it did before

This design is good for the elderly and hard to see people. Kind of like the Big Launcher.
But for me, I would like to see more on one screen.
I prefer the previews version.
Not sure if it's possible but yeah, it would be neat if someone could maybe modify it.
So far I hate the new layout. I liked it better before

+1 many times on the previous version. When turning pages, icons seem way too big.
Someone on Google has an increased visual prescription :silly:
I don't care for it very much. Seems like a more childish version of the store, were as the previous version seemed more mature and had a nicer style to it.
I really hope this isn't what to expect for key lime pie
noted for future reference on my Note 2
I just went through every layout available with hybrid properties in Paranoid Android and I couldn't find one I don't hate.
The best looking one was actually the 360p, the others have even fewer apps per page.
What were they thinking?!

I don't like it. Looks like the play store lost it edge. It's to big, to immature looking, and if it could display all my previous purchases that would be great.
I think the previous purchases are there. Just that the icons are 1000x bigger.
It's horrible for reasons mentioned. I tried it in a early release and quickly switched back to my modded version. Just look for modded versions and find one that doesn't auto update. I imagine they will become more popular soon enough. It was such a bad choice that I hope that dept or designer gets fired. What a sh!theaded move...
You'd think that they could come up with something better...

Or hit by a bus. It is complete and utter crap. You'd think they'd have learned from seeing Microsoft suffer with Win 8. Don't make massive UI changes that people can't opt out of. Yes I know you can access the desktop in W8, but you need Classic Shell or other stuff to get a proper start menu.

Yup... Same reason why I'm stickin with my Win7/Linux setup for a couple of more years. I was kinda excited initially but got turned off the more and more they released hints and sneak peaks for 8. I haveven considered a iMac. I helped purchase and setup one for my in-laws. Yup they're old and technologically inept lol! I wanted to sandbox them without worrying about too many viruses. Last model winxp they had (too cheap to run decent antivirus) drove me insane. My dad (graphics artist) has been preaching the praises of apple for years (way before iPod was a twinkle in Steve Job's brain) and has one also. I have to admit it is pretty nice for some things but is still too limited IMHO. Thinking about EVER owning an Apple product makes me cringe no offense cause some of em are great products just too hipster and limited in capacity.
Back to Playstore (still think the name change was stupid)... Maybe they could make it have different file views like file explore r or multiple views based on DPI a compromise next UI overhaul. I wonder sometimes if Google is making poor choices the more mature Android gets. Over simplifying things just because of the fact that a few critics claim Android is too complicated isn't a great thing. Sometimes things get more confusing and lose fuctionality in the process of simplification. Thank goodness this just a isolated case with playstore and maybe a couple of things for now. It could be way worse. Android is still the greatest mobile player around but they better continue to listen to the little guy and developers especially on the eve of Ubuntu Mobile which could take a piece of the pie.
im very happy with it they removed the dumb ass page after installing / updating apps :good:
The store seems to be going downhill ever since they renamed it from Google Market to Play Store.
it doesnt bother me. It looks much better inverted though. . I wish Google would bring back the purchased tab

XDA Classic Theme.

Not that I was super active poster in the recent years, but I was more or less always here.
I had the pleasure to read about the last happenings and so on....
Well that pleasure ended few weeks ago when I was forced to switch from my beloved and usable yellowish theme to one of the "modern" ugly/heavy/unusable themes.
I hoped in a temporary malfunction or about a scheduled maintenance but, after many week passed, is clear that it was removed on purpose.
I understand that kids tend to prefer the novelty and/or sleekness over a proven working thing, but designers /webmasters should remember that the audience is made also by people used to simple things that are just working and that don't need to be "improved", think to the almost perfect W7 style start menu and compare it with W10's one (which is already a step back).
Think to Android Gingerbread, somewhat rough and primitive, but with an unmatched usability by any of the "sleeker" following version
So as my friend the CEO of Vivaldi is used to say, "when in doubt make it an option", which is exactly the opposite of what happened here.
So pleease get the classic theme back or at least add a theme that mimic the removed one just like many other forums did when forced to upgrade the board engine for whatever reason (see My Digital Life, for example).
I'm sure my opinion here is shared by many others although not the majority of the userbase.
Thanks in advance for your attention.

There is major overhaul of the XDA website in the way.
Classic theme will not be the only casualty.

This basically. How do I get the classic theme back? The new theme is objectively worse.

Is classic supposed to be the old xda theme? This one:
{
"lightbox_close": "Close",
"lightbox_next": "Next",
"lightbox_previous": "Previous",
"lightbox_error": "The requested content cannot be loaded. Please try again later.",
"lightbox_start_slideshow": "Start slideshow",

"lightbox_download": "Download",
"lightbox_share": "Share",
"lightbox_zoom": "Zoom",
"lightbox_new_window": "New window",
"lightbox_toggle_sidebar": "Toggle sidebar"
}
Because it doesn't look like that at all, looks the same as the others with a few changes to the colors maybe (honestly can't tell the difference, nothing 'classic' about it as far as I can see).
Old prior XDA Classic is history. The new themed light/dark Classic is the closest match your going to have...

Can you put a screenshot of the new light dark classic? It looks just the same as the others to me.
PD: Thank you xda devs, for fixing what ain't broken just to justify your designers payroll.

Not broken? There have been posts about how broken the old site was every day for years.

Don't be daft, you know I'm talking about the design of the site.
I see you prefer to back blindly whatever decision is taken in the "high spheres" rather than discussing the matter.
Is not a good way to discuss, just replying with preformatted sentences like "the classic theme is dead, period".
The point is that a good theme was first removed, then replaced by a theme with the same name which has nothing to do with it, not even the colour palette!!!
So to summarize
before: who didn't like it had a choice of many modernish/metroish themes
after: who miss it has no choice other than an ugly theme which is "classic" only in its name.
As I said before, zillions of other forums boards where replaced/upgraded, for technical/security reasons, forcing them to leave behind the historical themes, but at least the webmasters attempted to provide something that resembled, as much as possible, the gone theme.
MDL forum is a notable example, but there are many others.
Why this is not done here (one of most technical forum around the web) is just beyond me.
