Android on Cavalier - HTC Cavalier

putting wm6.1 in it is dear hard let alone android, wonder if this will ever happen..not to many developers here in this section although this phone really knocks a puch!..

Question to all members...

After a deep thinking and consideration I thought I need to benchmark the market -or in this case the Forum. I have been having Jasjar (Universal) for quite sometime now and was not so sure whether I keep it or not.
Every span of couple of months new device is launched with this feature or that benefit. Many that have proved functionality and other proved to be a total disgrace to the ppc industry
And since I am a member in this forum for almost over a year now, I wanted to ask all -at least who will visit this thread- how many of those are using Universal and those who are using other devices ranked in this Forum? If any would -thankfully- be coming up with serious statistics of the wide use of Universal vs. other devices and brands this would definitely indicate the global domination of such device and the versatility not to mention that with the latest ROMs this device became more and more dearer to me as much it is to others -I reckon so!
I am sure this would help all those programmers to focus more on developing roms and apps compatible with Universal than others. I would ask anyone who reads this post to contribute in voting and comments would surely be appreciated.

Why not start a poll?
Universal
Hi Cyber-mate
To let you know; I do love my Universal and I'm using it 24 hours a day!
So I think I'm the first who answers your question
'Yeah... Lets start a poll'.
Cheers, Leo
Hi Cyber-mate
Have to say, I have persevered with the Universal, and that since the genius rom builders on here have cooked up some of their magic I am at last a happy Uni owner. I bought mine in Sep/Oct of 2005 and I can honestly say now I find mine usefull. I'm not a heavy user, but it is my main squeez (so to speak).
Regards
Mavrik
The reason there are so many devices, is because the market can support them as different people like different things.
There is no such thing as the best device, or the perfect device, it's what you think suits your needs the closest.
Currently, the Universal is the highest specification device, but soon the Athena will be out, but this is much larger, and not designed as a mobile pda phone, and also the Omni, which is the replacement for the Universal.
Really though, if you like your Universal, then great, if you don't, then listening to other people's views on what is good or bad will only confuse you.
We like the Universal, but there are many more that hate it.
I love my unversal too, and I think I keep it until I can get an Apple iPhone.
Or maybe I never change it to another device, because it has all thing in one, except GPS. But I can live without it, still we have BT GPS on the market.
Confused!!!...
Not sure what you want!!!...
Benchmark PDA? Yes I like my Universal!!!...
Benchmark Forum? Yes this is a good forum!!!... Of course, somethings are not allowed here but can be found somewhere!!!...
Benchmark self cooked ROM? This is definitely the best before WM6 starts to be banned!!!... If this banned forever, well one good thing less!!!...

You see CWKJ, there are 100s of opinions from 100s of poeple. However, being a person among a large comunity that consider Universal as a gr8 device that has got the all-in-one! I mean, just check any of those posts with a ROM related topic, you'd see more than 100k entries and with no doubt this indicate that it is widely used and YET proven to be a
top-of-the-list device.
I am sure many more would agree with me and to tell you the truth, Apple IPhone is a pansy one.
We are talking FUNCTIONALITY here and not looks and colors! A device that can connect wirelessly, bluetooth, camera, keyboard and many others proves to be a true Pocket PC.
And hey, one more thing, when we talk about a Pocket PC, we aint talking mobile phone, I mean apple to apple
Hi,
about the Universal, I have to say it's a wonderful device which can be very useful and helpful. Thanks to its VGA display you can browse Internet really well not like those other devices with smaller resolutions.
The "laptop alike" makes it again very useful to write anything, even long texts.
I think about it more like a little laptop replacement (...ok the OS is not really a good OS replacement but I guess this would change with Linux...). It's another way of PPC, since I got my Hermes (about two weeks ago) I see how it's different, I use the Hermes with just one finger (almost everything) while I don't use the keyboard too much....on the other hand with my Uni I almost did everything with the keyboard.
So now with these two devices I have to say I use the Hermes as an "stable" PPC and the universal to try every new ROM is created, I'm trying to learn how to cook them, etc so now I think I'm enjoying the Uni even more!

Rhodium vs Hero

Guys and gals,
Being a WM user since probably 5-6 years, i am having a "faith crisis" :-(
I am a proud owner of TP2 running wm6.5, and am loving all the development, hacking and customisability you get with WM (thanks to this great community obviously).
Problem is i am being more and more drawn to android OS, and its rapid development, applications, net integration etc.
was wondering if there's anyone out there with rhodium having the same doubts??
Rhodium is bloody good piece of hardware, and its a shame to let it go, but looking at Hero....
well, its tempting. cant have both :-(
Well, my single biggest reason for buying a TP2 was the keyboard, so....
ditto, Keyboard is the main reason.
Keyboard Keyboard keyboard... and more customization and hacking then any other Mobile OS.

Why not just run Andriod on your Rhodium..........................
Hero has no keyboard and can not run WinMo (Not without a great deal of Dev work anyway) Rhodium can run Android with very little work required and you could still run WinMo too.............
Hope that helps persuade your reasoning...........
Rhodium looks way better too
Cheers,
Beasty
Agree with beasty.
Rhodium has keyboard that for some (like me) is a must!
Also Android is a young and unmature OS, perhaps in the future can be an option but not for now.
Just my 2 cents,
The TP2 because of WM customization, flexability, business use, rom flashing, tweeks, etc......
ok well w eneed someone to get started on androiid for the tp2 n now doghnut has native cdma
iPhone is 100% toy, Android phones are 90% toy, WM phones are 50% toy. Some of us have to do real work sometimes, and we're not buying our phones for the fart noise apps.

ROFL,
I wonder how many are using that on WM though, I know it is available..........
You are correct though, WM is purely for business use as its main function.
Android is coming up fast but still needs a lot of work to convince me to be my main PDA OS.
IPhone, so far behind, the kids can keep it.

According to the Engadget review of Hero, the Sense UI is quite sluggish. So all that glitters is not gold.

Why do I want WM6.5 on my BA?

My apologies if I'm posting in the wrong area...
SO, I recently aquired an SX66 and am deciding on the 2003se Tmo rom, or WM6.5 (or whatever.
I can't find a concise answer: why do I want WM6.5?
What does it do that 2003se doesn't do, or why is it better?
Is it stable?
What are the major drawbacks to using WM6.5 on my BA?
Are there problems with going back to 2003se?
And what are the chances of bricking my device, provided I follow the instructions correctly?
AND what is (are) the most common mistake(s) that will brick my device when upgrading to 6.5 (besides cutting power/usb in process)?
I know some or all of the answers to these questions are out there (I've been looking), but it would be nice to have an idiot's single post to refer to for the most basic questions/answers.
TIA!
Hi,
if I were you I would never put WM 6.5 on your BA, I don't like 6.5. I would stay 6.0 or 6.1.
But WM 6 Has more compatibility with programs and has more functionality.
I don't know if its stable, because I cant get it on my BA( I have Ran WM 6/ 6.1/6.5 on a Kaiser).
Further someone else will awnser I think
Why not on your BA (do you have a ph20b?)?
im not sure about your taste in operating systems but i'm a XP loving vistahater.
wm6.5 is vista merged with OSX for your 5 year old phone. I flashed one of my BAs with it last night. it was horrible. speed wise, i about threw the phone against the wall. GUI wise? No more start menu, no more programs menu, no more settings menu. it's all been replaced with that ohsowonderful honeycomb gui. sure, it MAY be better for fingers, not that the old style was that hard, but christ almighty it makes doing anything hairpull-hard.
shortversion:
go with wm2003 or wm5. i find they're faster. i prefer 2003, since it runs all in RAM.
as for your brick question, i aint too sure. i'd like to know how exactly you brick one of these meself. i can't find anything on it, the documentation of the BA is surprisngly lacking for most of this.
I like the new builds of 6.5 with the big bottom bar, but it is so much less functional. I would definitely go with something besides 6.5, although in my experience I found it faster than any other version of winmo. I have had a few lockups, but mostly just with the comm manager/internet.
its hard to judge its fastness since its so..hard to navigate. i can't even read the icons, let alone try and use it.
microsoft trying to copy apple does not produce good results, methinks.
and hte new homescreen irks me. its usability is horrible, its better on blueangel but on the hermes it was just bad.
I still use WM2003 because:
1. The device is designed for this OS.
2. I don't have needless time to spent for OS experiments.
3. I like small and fast Office versions like the old Word and Excel Mobile.
4. I like the build in encryption in Excel Mobile.
5. I don't like the soft keys (>= WM5), because they replace more usable and faster menus.
6. All applications I need run under WM2003.
I'll change my OS when I change my device (currently hoping for the HTC Thoth.).
You guys are great.
To be hones, I hate M$ (no flaming, please) and have been running Ubuntu Linux for about the last year. I especially hate Vista.
I also appriciate the insight into the feel of the WM6.5 os. I don't care about newest, latest, or greatest. I want "works great", so it looks like I'll be sticking with the Tmo 2003se rom.
Thanks ya'll.
..why not install linux then? i got linux working on mine. i cant seem to interface witht he actual phone though. perhaps thats tonights project.
interesting thing to play with though.

I also tried Linux on my BA. It's wonderful and plenty of possibilities but ... only possibilities because the hardware is not open and people needs to hack this device.
I don't want to buy anymore a device that needs the work of some guys like xplode working hard to get these devices running properly.
I don't want to spend thousands of hours getting my 500 Eur. mobile connected to wifi. And when I ask the carrier he says me that they have no plans to solve the problem, so I solved myself the problem (thnks a lot, xda-developers).
No, no and nooo. So I decided to stay with my BA in Windows 2003se wwe and wait ...
-Hum: HTC blackstone. Very nice but Windows. No more Windows, please.
-Hum: Neo Freerunner. Open but no future.
-Hum: Iphone. Very nice. Very closed. No, thanks.
-Hum: HTC Dream. Linux but hiddenly closed Android on top capturing my traffic. NOoo.
-Hum: Palm pre. Linux but WebOS in the same way that Android or Iphone. No, thanks.
-Hum: Nokia's N900. Linux debian. Open. May be this is my phone. I will wait a couple of months to see your opinions.

Why WM 6.5?
because sooner or later, it will have more compatibility than the old OS.
more compatible with the new apps, games, tools, hardware like gps, a2dp support, wifi type N,and many more.
maybe today WM 6.5 maybe still craps, have a lot of bugs, etc, but newer OS is designed to be better from the previous one, it's just about time whether m$ can make it better or just make another mistake like vista..we'll see
that isnt entirely relevant to the blueangel though.
yeah. wm6.5 is the new wmstandard, so new hardware will have drivers for it and not for the others.
but we're not talking new hardware here. we're talking a device built in 2004 for wm2003, there is no new hardware for it. as for new appz and gamezzzz, wm6.5 is mostly a new interface from what ive gathered. the OS core isnt changed to the point of changing older APIs. programs should work both ways.
and sooner or later? its supposed to be replaced in a year. methinks nobody is going to jump on the bandwagon that fast.
pointis, its bad. unless you like the new interface, its no different. except slower.
I flashed on the newest tmo uk rom for 2003se, and I'm happy with it. I"m used to the 2003/se OS, and all the progs I know about and have a copy of, work on it.
Linux seems like a great idea, but I don't have time to spend getting it right.
I might try WM5 or 6/6.5 after I get my hands on the universal that's on it's way, but I need my phone to work, and work well, right now.
..i hate you. the universal needs to drop a few hundred bucks in price so i can grab 3 of them. it seems like a nicephone, i want it. damnit.
if you want i can DD my linux SDcard and upload the image. just dd it to a sd, pop it in and run haret. methinks it should work. actually im going to do that.
it was quick, feel free to better clean up the article but i have created a quickstart guide using my image for linux on hte BA.
http://wiki.xda-developers.com/index.php?pagename=BlueAngel_Linux
i'm tired and fizzled out, so anyone feel free to rewrite it to more easily understandability.
Kind of off topic, but the linux for the BA is ran off an sd card? Kind of like a live cd that doesn't touch the roms and storage(s); just pop out the sd and soft reset, and everything is back to WM? I would totally advertise that aspect of it... it might get more people into linux for the HTC devices (or maybe I just caught up to the bandwagon)
of course. thats how all linux is ran on htc phones from my knowedlge, i havent heard of anyone actually replacing WM with it.
If its any help
Is it stable?
Yes both 6.1 and 6.5 is stable enough.
I tried every rom and tested throughly and decided to stick to Sun Dreams 6.1 as it is very stable
What are the major drawbacks to using WM6.5 on my BA?
None
Are there problems with going back to 2003se?
Nope, as long as you dont repart you ll be ok to go back to 2003 (someone pls correct If I am wrong) But I dont think you would wanna go back to 2003se as most of the todays apps designed to run on wm5 and later
And what are the chances of bricking my device, provided I follow the instructions correctly?
Slim
Make sure no ones using the microwave washing machine and the dishwasher whilst they are hoovering you ll be fine. Just read the instructions over and over till you are ok with it. Patience and make sure both batteries device/laptop whatever charged up and Use XP as it makes things easy.
AND what is (are) the most common mistake(s) that will brick my device when upgrading to 6.5 (besides cutting power/usb in process)?
make sure you have the right rom !!! you ll be fine
I know some or all of the answers to these questions are out there (I've been looking), but it would be nice to have an idiot's single post to refer to for the most basic questions/answers.
I remember my first time I was totally scared !!!
i wasnt scared.
i was more scared when i realized i had a flash going on my harrier and had just popped out the battery. bricked to ****.
and 2003 is better than them. faster. and **** appcompatibility. OS speed matters more.
Yeah, there are no linux or android flashable roms... yet, but in regard to reasons to upgrade
1.smooth flick (or kinetic) scrolling basically everywhere in the operated system
2.some built in app are updated i.e. internet explorer, contacts app
3.compatibilility with newer programs, alot of newer programs wont run on 2003
4.new today screen with bigger font and new plugins
If any1 would like to add feel free to do so.

is it just me?

i cant stick with a rom for more than 2 or 3 days..without getting annoyed with it....am i a jaded rom junkie or is windows just not cuttin it
same here
i actually just flashed back to stock because it's so snappy. within 24 hours i'll probably be on the latest mightyrom 2.1 build again.
I know what you mean ! WM just doesn't seem that good anymore, it's like it stalled at the release of WM6.
I have started to think that this may very well be the last WM (or for that matter Microsoft) product I have anything to do with. Slowly all of my PCs have moved over to Linux and I feel my phone's going to go that way too.
WM7 better be a revolution and not just playing catch up or, in my opinion, WM will die !
Same here on the Microsoft front: although I'd never be seen dead with an iPhone, my brother's 'Hero' Android phone is very tasty and some of the newer Android handsets are powerful little beasties
My PC's used to run Windows but now have Ubuntu quite happily running on them - I can even sync my phone quite happily with SynCE so who needs Windows even if you have a Windows mobile phone?
hero is a nice device...but cant compare with that tiny screen...come to think of it...android on the tp2 screen is prob the only advatage to windows mobile....idnnoo i dnt wanna beat this topic to death tho....
the only rom that suits me for day to day use is josskoss 1.5...and i say that after probably trying ever single rom on this site...and some htcpedia...i am really begining to think im just spoiled by options ha
A dear friend of mine call me a "flashing whore"
But apart from the joke, it is a pleasure to flash every new ROM out!
Is part of maintaining our devices up to date with much better ROM´s than the original ones!
Thanks to XDA and Chefs & Devs is that I remain with WM, if XDA wouldn´t exist WM have died a loong time ago
orb3000
Very true! I must agree...started with the wing..then tilt then g1 and now tp2...I can't imagine how anyone could have ever used the wing as is out of the box..
Honestly, when you reach the point where you spend more time flashing ROM's than actually using your device, I think it's time for one of two things. Either get a Windows phone less flasheable (i.e, most non-HTC models), or move to a different mobile OS.
Lol, I love a fresh flash, and am a bit of a flashing addict myself. I get some pretty bad flashing withdrawl if I'm traveling and can't flash I also have to agree with Orb3000; XDA & its developers are the only things which keep me with Windows Mobile

Goodbye Windows Mobile... Hello Android

Retiring my TP2 today. Just had to get that out of my system.
Signed,
Another unsatisfied customer.
Quitter.
You are darn right I am a quitter! And proud of it! I just can't believe I lasted this long.
lame. though i would love an android phone with the form factor of the tp2. the keyboard and tilty screen has made every iphone user i know impossibly jealous. but its not a phone i can recommend because of windows mobile. windows mobile works well, with a custom rom, registry hacks, and custom installed programs. android is just easier out of the box. i look forward to htc releasing an android phone with a good slide out keyboard.
Nobody can blame you for leaving this device. You're the third person who's posted a thread about abandoning the Rhodium, and I doubt you're the last. I'm personally holding out for the HTC Vision and it's beautiful looking QWERTY, but there are so many great options out there it's extremely tempting just to sell my Rhodium on eBay and buy a Desire or some other decent phone right now.
Yeah dude I was originally going to hold out for that HTC Vision also, but I just can't take it any longer. Flashing custom WM ROM's and installing certain cabs and reloading all my tweeks and stuff is just too time consuming. Holy cow do I waste a lot of time reading xda! When you see how fluid some other devices are out there, at some time you have to ask yourself what the point of all this is? There is nothing WM can do that Andoid can not do and better (for me that is). I have tremendous respect for the developers on this site but I think WM is a dying breed. The TP2 should not have been as crippled as it is either.
I dunno, I have to wonder if there's a big difference between your TP2 and my Tilt 2 because I am having very few issues with mine even after modding the hell out of the stock ROM (no compelling reason to go to a cooked one yet). Yeah, WinMo has its issues, but I've been using it since WM2003 on a Viewsonic PDA, so I'm pretty familiar with it. My Tilt 2 does everything I need it to, much like My Incite did. The only reason I upgraded was because I needed a larger screen for my failing eyes. Anyway, I was just ribbing you. I might go to an Android at some point, but for now, my Tilt 2 has me covered. The honeymoon isn't quite over just yet.
I left the party and went over to Android. For me, it was more of a preemptive thing -- WP7 is an abhorrent POS and while I probably would have stuck around if a 4.3" device with WinMo 6.5 was being released, it looks like the TP2 is all she wrote for WinMo.
XDA was absolutely crucial to my being able to use and enjoy my TP2. But I don't have to live with buggy software anymore (actually, the things I got from XDA were stable, but the commercial products were certainly not).
If anyone is interested, Sprint in coming out with the Samsung Epic, a 4" SAMOLED 4G Android device with a slide out keyboard. But I've moved on to the Evo. I've coveted the HD2 and its Snapdragon processor and 4.3" screen for ages.
In the end, MS finally killed whatever enthusiasm I had for the platform.
You know I tried everything. I too modded the stock and still this thing lagged. The best I could do was cooked ROMs but still it was one thing after another that just got me to the point where I was milliseconds away from shattering my phone into a thousand pieces for some gratitude. Talk about rage! I honestly think I have worn out the reset button. And as far as WP7, give me a break. I can't believe that Microsoft is so far behind the game and now they are trying to reinvent the wheel. Cell phones and cell phone technology are a crazy booming and growing business. It's sad when a technology company tries to reverse engineer something because in this day and age by this time it's just too late.
tbh ever since Android came out, i always wanted one but since it started hitting the market, every damn person i know has an Android and it ticks me off because it totally reminds me of how iPhone got all popular, now Android is in that stage, teens are having the Droid incredible, EVO 4Gs its insane because i bet you 95% of them dont even know how to operate it, thats why right now im sticking to my roots by staying with WM because no one knows what the heck it is(except XDA ), i rather have something different from the crowd.....i started with WM and ill hang on to WM until the whole WM thing just dies which probably wont happen for awhile you never know
man thats a tiny slide out keyboard on the vision. im not so sure about that one.
If different is what you are going for then I say stick to WM. Personally for me, I need function and ease of use. To me, Microsoft is their own worst enemy for not delivering without making us spend hours on xda fixing their mistakes. Although it can be fun here on xda, it can be really frustrating as well.
To me, WinMo seems designed by the same people that design the desktop platform and not by people who actually use it every day. Too many things that just don't make sense (but easily fixed by others, fortunately). I think M$ needs to hire a few XDA developers and put them into the development cycle for WinMo. If WinMo 7 isn't a significant improvement it will be the last WinMo version because once the phone manufacturers stop supporting it in favor of Droid and others, death will be imminent.
And when you see Microsoft developing apps for iPhone and Android yet still plug away at their own software ala "Kin the spectacular failure" I can't help but be embarassed to be a part of this. Playing catchup in the tech world is just plain silly to me. Here is an article about it posted 3 days ago:
http://mobile.venturebeat.com/2010/...developers-to-catch-up-to-iphone-and-android/
Don't know if everyone's already seen this:
http://www.infoworld.com/d/mobilize/windows-phone-7-dont-bother-disaster-211
"The developers at Mobile Beat quickly recognized the labor-intensity of this UI method and one asked the Microsoft rep if anyone had bothered to test it with users. The answer was essentially "no" -- a scary thought indeed."
Sounds just like what I said earlier.

Then, be sure to read this as well.
I dunno, maybe it's because I've been using WinMo since 2003 but I'm comfortable with it. The biggest problem is there are still remnants in the 6.x versions being used on phones from when it was ported from PDAs back with version 5. Too much stuff designed for a stylus and not a finger. Another problem is that WinMo is not designed for idiots like iPhone users who have no concept of the level of customization that WinMo allows. I like that I have to be more knowledgeable to get the most out of my WinMo phone. It means I can more readily identify when something doesn't work right and why and fix it myself. I also love that I can make my phone more personal and not look like anyone elses. Every iPhone I've ever played around on, with the exception of what apps were on it, was identical to every other one in looks and function. Maybe this is OK for those with limited ability to mod their own phone, but I'm a tinkerer by nature and it would drive me crazy. Been modding my phone since my first RAZR way back in 2006 and wouldn't have it any other way.
I also like that I'm not tied to any one company for apps. For all the complaints I hear about so few developers writing for WinMo I have yet to not find an app for my needs. In fact, there are usually about 4-5 apps that do the same thing and almost always at least one is free. Sure, some are crap, but choice is a good thing. Certainly much better than limits.
I love my Windows Mobile phone and if WP7 improves on it even just a little, I'll probably stick with it.
Personally, I am really liking my WinMo 6.5 tilt 2. Yes, it has a cooked ROM and a few other tweaks, but so did my iphone that I had before this Tilt2. IMHO, as far as useability, and business is concerned, the Tilt2 is all business and not so much a toy (which is what I look for in a phone, since I run a home business from it.).
Scott
I think anybody who has taken the time to flash a custom rom for themselves here can be considered a power user. Everybody on this board wants more than the next guy. But what do you do when you've been let down and this place just isn't enough anymore? I have had Windows CE devices since 2002 and as silly as this sounds, my favorite device was my old T-mobile MDA with WM 5.0. Why? Because it worked. Now I realize that we are trying to do a lot more with our devices, but even simple tasks like text messaging and the actual phone part seems to get worse with each new OS. When I watch the videos for WP7 I am very let down. Customization is key to the MS fanbase. So the things that I would like are either getting worse or going away. Why MS didn't just turn over the whole program to XDA is a real mystery isn't it? Since I honestly think that we are the only ones who really care.
