EEE PC as alternative to RedFly - General Accessories

I've learnt about the very cool RedFly terminal. Sounds like a great way of turning a Windows Mobile phone into a small laptop.
Then I got to thinking about the price of the thing and tonight at my Amiga club meeting learnt that EEE PC's are now 20% cheaper than a RedFly.
So I'm wondering if there is software available which will allow you to do the same thing using a PC laptop.

Yes it's called MyMobiler. Google it... I oten argued the value in the RedFly since an EEE PC is cheaper and offers WAY more(full blown XP).

You guys simply do not understand the purpose of the redfly.
that an eee pc or something similar is a better option for a single person or even a small company can be taken for granted.
but the beauty of the redfly, from a corporate admin perspective is, that it is NOT another real machine. It is a screen + keyboard for a smartphone, nothing more. And thats a good thing, because a laptop causes huge costs in operation on an enterprise level.
Applications and os have to be licensed, user rights, updates, setups have to be serviced. From time to time a user needs support, etc.
with the redfly, you dont need these. You dont even need personal redflies for every employee. No customization, no special backup, no servers, etc. The cost savings from a total cost of ownership perspective can be HUGE. And the price to buy such a machine is a non-issue.
basically, it is for enterprise users and to be bought in volume by IT departments. For everybody else: get a laptop, it is a better value for you.

You made some good points there bommel, but I don't think it justifies the huge price of the Redfly. I've pointed out the Jointech JL7100 in another thread, which is a CE device that could be a great alternative to a Redfly, assuming the right software.
As it's CE embedded, perhaps is would not have the same 'corporate admin' issues that an XP machine could have?
If a Redfly is like a stripped down eee pc or JL7100, should it not cost less? I don't believe that the price is a non-issue for many enterprises, as if a firm were buying 500 'mobile companions', I'm sure they'd rather spend $100 per machine than $500 if it did the same thing, and the JL7100 shows this is likely to be possible.

This is not the same as Redfly; as far as I know it does not scale up the phones resolution, which is essential to make it useful.
If I were Redfly, I'd be a bit worried. Or perhaps they knew this could easily happen and have just been opportunistically pricing their product highly while it stands alone in the market?

Question - Would you buy the o2 Orbit AGAIN?

Hi
I seem to see a lot of issues witht he Orbit/HTC Artemis.
I was about to buy one so wondered 'if you were buying again TODAY would you buy this phone or another?'
Cheers.
Robin
Why not?
You are sking about Orbit/Artemis, but I believe the guys with the O2 version are the most affected by the bugs The P3300 etc. have shiped ROMs available so it is easy to restore when in trouble. The lesson here should be not to start messing around with your device if you are not in possession of the original ROM.
I have been very happy with my device and would buy again, only I am waiting for the HTC Advantage. When we start tweaking that too we will have the wailing and gnashing of teeth if people do not take precautions
Once I managed to get the P3300 Rom on my Orbit it's been a much better device.
Previously I had a I-Mate K-Jam (Wizard) and the main downside I had with it was the size of thing when it was in my pocket. I don't even notice the orbit meaning that it can now be my all the time phone instead of just my weekday phone. Previously at weekends I found myself changing the Sim Card to a smaller phone when I didn't care about having the extra features.
But if I was buying now I'd wait and see what happens with the WM6 upgrade (if it comes along).
I would buy again - not had any problems with my standard Orbit
No problems with the storage card. TomTom working well
This may be a bit off topic but it is just to erritterate what "victoradjei" said... I remember when the Magician was quite new and users who started tweaking intensively encounterred a lot of problems and I was at first very scared to buy it. I eventually bought one and waited until hacks/tweaks were reliable. As of today my Magician works well.
I would buy it again, too.
The CPU is a bit slow, but I knew it before.
Everythings works for me.
I have the P3300 and I didn't mess around with the ROM or use any tweaking programs.
It does what I want it to do - so I see no point trying to turn it into a super computer.
Bottom line is I am happy with my choice - then again, my last phone was a Nokia 6100 and that was pretty high tech for me at the time also.
I didn't buy mine (part of my job entails maintaining over 1500 O2 UK smartphones so I get to play with a few of them), but the Orbit is easily the best iteration I have used so far.
The best as in form factor and it-is-a-phone-after-all usability/battery life, responsiveness and reception quality (no 3G or keyboard are not concerns for me).
So to OP, definitely (until the next FOTM arrives)
Definately yes - THE only thing that will tempt me away is apples iphone..... Which I hope someone will make a BT GPS unit to work with it.
On the orbit The only really annoying thing I find (having now hacked the Stereo BT to work, and tweaked Today interface) ... is the camera is cr*p ....it only works outdoors, no macro, autofocus - beaten by ANY sony E !!!
I must admit it is the iPhone I am waiting for but I need a phone in the meantime..
Robin
The only issue I see is that with mSD cards going garbage.
Apart from that, I never had any problems (and if you do ... well ... it is Windows agter all !!!).
I would definitely buy another P3300, especially if there will be an updated version with mSD fix, a faster CPU and some more built-in storage. WM6 would be cool.

why ?
Its bulky, no 3G, can't load 3rd part applications, no GPS, only 8gb for music (I need at least 30gb otherwise I need to pick each day what I put on), suspisious battery life.

Not to get off of the subject, but my wife gave me the Creative Labs NOMAD Jukebox Zen (USB 2.0) one year for X-Mas.
Since then, I have taken out the 20gb laptop drive in there and replaced it with a 60gb drive
It seems like the since the iPod came along - having very limited storage space that cannot be upgraded without tossing out the old one and buying a new one - it set a trend in the rest of the market.
I look around the shops once in a while and see how mp3 players went from 60gb off the shelf now only hold a few gigs at the most for the same price.
Now this brings up the question:
Is the iPhone going to drive the technology backwards like the iPod did for the mp3 players making end user lose out in the end?
This could run and run
Although the iPhone can't do anything my Orbit can't, I am very impressed with the form factor and user interface of the iPhone - if it works as slickly as the demos suggest.
Similarly, my Nomad JB3 40Gb does a lot of things that my early iPod Photo 60Gb simply can't do - but the NJB is just such a crude device to operate in comparison to the iPod.
At the end of the day they are only products to be marketed, and for the majority of consumers the i*** interface and form factor are an easy sell.

this is my favourite type of discussion. off-topic of course ....
my counter-argument to you is why the macbook is a tiny minority. Sure its slickly marketed, looks cute and has a nice interface (although - kill me - i kind of like vista . Buts it has no pcmcia card (so my 3G card can't be used), is heavy (5lbs vs, say 4lbs for a toshiba U205) and ir overpriced. most people are more intelligent then the marketers, which is why some fish are snagged (i.e. the macbook sells at all) but most people who want a cool small laptop still go for a samsung or sony. and most sensible people get the £400 15" basic .....
Now we are WAY OFF TOPIC.........
I am intrigued by Colonels comments, I bet he has never used a Mac for real?
Many people are forced to use a PC for work but I know many people who have been PC users for years and finally tried a Mac for home use and would not go back to a PC again.
But back to my original question. )
Robin

Random laptop question :-)

I know this is very random and probably doesn't belong any where around these parts but since I own an evo what the hell. Well I own a windows vista machine its not the most powerful one out there but it served its purpose over the past few years. I'm Im downloading the sdk and I'm looking to get into writting apps for android and taking java/c+ dev classes to help me on my feet. I currently know a great deal about designing i.e photoshop, dreamweaver/css, html and a **** hair about flash/air. I want to make android games as my ultimate goal. So my question to you guys is, what kind of laptops are you devs or general users owning out there? My budget is is 1000 and I'm sure some mac fan boys will say apple but they are way to overpriced it seems as I never owned one so maybe I don't know what the hype is about. I do all my business from a very powerful windows 7 desktop. Like I said I'm just looking for some laptop recommendations from my fellow xda members under 1000 as I plan to kick start my app career with my evo. Thankx

Laptops are practically disposable. I'd say get the best you can for $500 and get a new one in two years with the other $500.
Apple laptops are not overpriced at all if you compare SIMILAR specs... Now i won't comment on the mac pro...
I compared it to a similar size and speced lenovo and there prices were the same..
Programing really isn't that intense... what else do you plan to do on it?
If your desktop will be your main... no need to spend a lot of money on a laptop.

Well I plan to do alot of this on the go as I'm attending college for these course so I need my laptop to be pretty darn strong. As I will be using most of the ish on my desktop(entire adobe suite cs5, maybe a game or 2 but mainly for designing and programming but on the laptop. Adobe products are pretty demanding when it comes to graphics and a good processors. I looked at the MacBook pro and its pretty beast I must say but is it really worth the 1400 just for the 13"? I saw some way stronger laptops with i7 processors alot cheaper. Now my laptop will be my main computer because I wont be packing my desktop around campus lol.

My $0.02 is that you keep an eye on Tigerdirect.com or just join their mailing list. They CONSTANTLY have great laptop deals. I highly recommend them.
hah yeah... i have the 15". There customer service is the best.( Look at the surveys ) But the biggest advantage of the mac is the weight, and battery life. (i love my 8 hours of web browsing while in class )
I use mine for photography mostly, and some gaming. If you were to buy a macbook por i would wait a month or two... they should be uping that line soon (the 13 inch should be more in line with what others offer)

I hear alot of great things about them so I guess I could wait another month then ill have enough to pull the trigger on the 15" if I wanted too. They seem to run adobe suite and most adobe products with no prob based on reviews i read. Thanks for the info guys ill keep looking around.

You could get a pretty powerful Asus with an i7 for that much. I would steer clear of Tiger Direct because most of their stuff is refurbs. They do have some nice deals on lappy's though. Check out Newegg too. They are very good customer service wise and if anything goes wrong during your purchase they are quick to fix it. You are going to get a much better deal online than in your big box stores like Best Buy.

I've purchased from TigerDirect and never gotten a refurb. they DO have a refurb section, but all the machines i bought were brand new.
Im gonna have to vote for ASUS also. They have a good range to fit performance or battery life or both. Got an Asus UL50V about 8 months ago, and it gets great battery life (which is what i was going for, about 8-12 hours). It also has a dual video card setup where i can switch on the fly between an integrated card for battery life, or a nvidia for better performance. On top of that, they gave me 1 year free accidental damage coverage.
But, if you are only going to be using it for programming then remember that it's basically word processing until you get to compiling. So unless you are developing massive projects, you won't need anything over the top.
Well, thats my opinion

i would say you can get alot more computer for your money if you went pc. i own a macbook from 2007 and i have not had a single complaint about it other than the fact that it was pricey. also you can always install windows on a mac and it runs windows pretty damn good. oh and one other thing haven't had any malware or virus problems.

You're probably right man, my biggest concern is a laptop with a dedicated graphics card at least 512mb preferably 1gb. Most these PC's I see have on the fly dedicated graphics so you can lower it and save battery if you don't need all the performance and switch on onboard graphics.

[HOT ROD]Future of smartphones.....we are the change we seek.

I am about to share some insight. I need Google to listen as they will be developing the future of smart phones. We need Samsung, Sharp, Sony, and HTC to get this too. They make our wonderful hardware. Lastly, we need you. Only you can make it happen.
Here is some example of the problems. I bought a Harley. I have increased the performance through adding performance exhaust and a high flow intake. I also added a new seat and forward controls because of my height.
Now take my desktop computer. Instead of using the on 20" monitor I upgraded to a 24" after I purchased it. It was laggy so we opened it up and added a stick of ram. Shortly later we ran out of some space so we got a hard drive that was faster and had twice together capacity. The new Windows 7 dropped and as fast as I could purchase it I was installing.
Now comes the present state of our smartphones. We have great phones for just long enough to see a press flier to launch the new best thing. My idea will change the industry. It will create jobs at home. It could really change the whole thing.
I will be using various examples. The first is the Epic touch by Sprint but applies to other carriers. We all know this phone has a Wimax capable modem. What if we could go to Best Buy and my the new LTE modem be right there for the purchase. I am stuck for another year in this contract but I am very eager to take advantage of the improved speeds.
Next you see they are making 720p screens. Do I want LCD or Amoled? Once I decided I run over to the geek guy squad to install. I also get a warranty just for my screen.
An extra gig of ram so I don't lag as bad on the latest racing game. If that didn't do the trick maybe it's time for a better CPU.
We call it Hot Rodding. This could be the future. You want a specific clone. You can build it yourself.
We change from asking what phone you have to saying, "Hey, what's under the hood.
At the end of our 2 year contract are phones are still up to date and easier to sell.
We still buy complete phones from manufactures. They still carry feature phones that are kept original. But there premium phones sell according to their trim line like on cars. Very much like desktop computers.
The market could be huge. Sells will increase across the board. Companies no longer will be out on 60 percent of the customers who are under contract. If they have a new CPU launching on a new phone before most customers couldn't even purchase it. Now even the ones stuck in contract can give Samsung money to upgrade their phone's components.
Android could end fragmentation. Your phones just needs certain requirement for the upgrades.
Imagine the possibilities. Best Buy and geek squad would be set. But you will once again see the boom of the local computer store.
The current phone manufactures will do great too. You might only sell them a phone every 2 years. But, they can keep it upgraded for the life of the contract.
Businesses who manufacture and sell accessories will do wonderful. They don't have to worry about case changes ever year on hundreds of models. Their overhead would go down dramaticaIly. If you are tired of that 4" screen phone. It looks like you can buy a new case and screen. All your other hardware will transfer.
If you want a phone and you take a lot of pictures maybe you will just need a better camera and video card.
The initial cost of the phone might be more. But, now it is more like buying a car and less like buying a dozen eggs with a short shelf life. If your phones motor blows out you can take it to the shop or buy the part on eBay/Amazon and do it yourself after reading the instructions.
I will update this in the morning when my brain is clear and I am not as tired. I would love to here your input. Together we can construct the perfect essay to distribute to the companies.
Seriously? I'm sure this is something that has crossed the mind of these companies before and I'm pretty sure what you're suggesting would not be profitable or logistically sound.

It would be a HUGE phone! The reason phones are small and powerful is that they are designed from the ground up as one unit. If you want a new camera how will it attach? How will the existing hardware interface deal with the new signal. Look into why the S3 doesn't have a quad-core processor in the US. The System On Chip (SOC) makes what you know and love as a phone possible but it doesn't allow you to swap pieces like a PC.

It's an interesting idea, but this mean a complete rewrite of android from scratch I believe and will make fragmentation even worst than it is right now Also there is no good profit for the OEM.
But it could be awesome to have a customizable smartphone (hardware)

It would only require the OS to be compiled with a set of standard drivers for most hardware. Kinda like windows and it's generic drivers.
I would definitely love to have the ability to interchange parts like ram, gpu, cpu, screens, cameras, speakers, leds...

Several companies have tried this with laptops over the years and they all flopped. It is a good idea but nearly impossible to execute in cell phones. Manufacturing costs simply need to be reduced so contracts are no longer needed. Like computers did mid 2000's cell phones seem to be hitting a plateau where they cant get much better/faster/different than people want. There is honestly nothing that cant be done on E4GT platform except for lte.
Deleted. Wrong thread

Your obviously young op. Hardware isn't that easy as a computer for phones. The ONLY possible thing that can happen is if a third party company makes things to replace on your phone. (Of course better things) or even they design a phone that's all for upgrading its core components. However even that will need to be replaced just like phones within months. Just look at computers. Things develop extremely fast these days. No matter what the idea isn't effective for company's.
At least not yet in the limit of hardware we have today.

You don't get it. These companies benefit from the hype of the newest phones coming out. It makes our phones look like they are less than they actually are and we feel like we need the newest thing out out on the market. These companies feed off of our weak, pathetic minds to profit themselves. Don't get me wrong, I adore your idea, I am just absolutely sure that it wont make it.

Totally impractical. You're trying to take an entirely different marketplace and apply it to smartphones. It doesn't work that way. I promise you your idea has been thought of before, and many of the reasons mentioned in this thread are why it'll never go farther than the idea stage.

I disagree.. Its always good to have options but it will never be the android market.. Google wouldnt allow that lol.. I use other markets before googles for a number of reasons.. Ideas are what make reality, without them we wouldnt be where we are at now. Not to mention in such a short time
Sent from my SPH-D710 using XDA
Also wanted to add to the op.. What if they created one device to start that the manufacturer developed new parts for that specific device which the owners had to purchase the parts they wanted to upgrade? It would be a test run and if profitable would increase there base.. Why not? Even be able to purchase new cases for other hardware? It would be profitable and all us technology buffs would have a blast.. Its putting it in motion that is the hardest.. The idea is great.

This should be the future of smart phones

It's a novel idea but I don't see it happening unless the manufacturers and carriers can find a way to milk us for all it's worth. If you must have the latest and greatest all the time your options are buy off contract or buy out of your existing one.
Sent from my SPH-D710 using XDA
Great idea. I actually had a similar one a while back when I was still rockin' my G2. I also thought about maybe an XDA phone. However, there seems to be a stale air floating around XDA as of late when it comes to "why not". Everyone wants to knock ideas that are far fetched. I doubt Android would be the way it is now if unlocking a locked/encrypted bootloader was too "far fetched". Or overlclocking a phone was pointless.
Some ideas you have are very practical. The screen and camera being a couple. Something like the processor would be difficult given current build methods but all that would take is a very minor redesign of the way it connects to the board. Also they would need to discontinue the use of the SOC model. RAM would be easy as long as it's separate from the SOC also and the connections are redesigned.
This of course would take implementing industry standards like we see in computers with SATA and PCIe. Until that happens, this idea isn't going to take off. Now there's the issue of size that was brought up. That's a non-issue really. Let's take an sdcard for example. Swappable RAM couldn't be that small? I don't see why not because an sdcard is swappable and it's small. It also has a lot of memory - 64GB+ on something smaller than the nail on your pinkie. Sure some things might increase in size a little but nothing that would cause us to carry around Zack Morris phones again. We're talking a millimeter or so at the most.
The main issue with any of this is having it catch on. No company is going to start doing it on it's own. You'd have to create a company and make phones which would cause the competition (minus Apple) to adopt this methodology also. Anyone have lots of money or really good credit?
A few problems with that theory. One, it assumes that the average person know how to replace RAM, CPU, screen, etc. Two, it assumes that the average person knows how to use basic tools and actually has the tiny tools necessary to work on a phone, and the capability or know-how to actually disassemble the device and know what to replace. Not to mention the fact that the phone's tiny connectors are easily damaged by improper handling. The problem of lacking standards has already been mentioned. But the biggest problem is size. You are very wrong if you think that making everything replaceable will not make the phone significantly bigger. Let me give you an example: I still have an 8 year old Dell laptop, on which I was able to replace the CPU to upgrade it. It was a large computer and had a socket for the CPU that made it easily swappable. On my current macbook pro, the CPU is soldered to the board, and the only thing I can replace myself is the RAM and HD. I swapped the HD for an SSD. On the macbook air, everything is soldered and not replaceable. Essentially, to make things as small as possible, you have to permanently attach as many things as possible AND use as many proprietary components as possible. You can't use many standardized components if size is an issue. While this is a good idea in theory, it is absolutely impossible in practice and would not result in increased sales if implemented. It would result in a bulky device leaving most people questioning why they should buy this over the competition. And then they will go and buy the competition. If you want more people to buy Apple, institute this. Hell, given that option, I'd buy Apple myself.

How many "average" people do you know that swap out computer components? No assumption here at all. This would be a thing only for enthusiasts - like installing a high end graphics card, water cooling, 16GB of RAM, a new motherboard, moving to Ivy Bridge, and so on.
No "average" person goes much beyond swapping out a monitor at best. Maybe installing more RAM if they're feeling really froggy.
The reason for size in a desktop is due to the wires and a lot of time, cooling requirements. In a phone there are very few wires running all over the place, no fans to route them around. No CPU heat sink to worry about melting wires. The HDD and optical drives are large and require space along with, you guessed it, more wires. RAM stands vertically and it's large by todays standards.
If you are purposefully making an upgradeable device, you are automatically sacrificing size. It's a fact that to make devices as small as possible, which is most ideal in a portable device, there can't be room for upgrades. If you look at the current ultraportable notebooks (Apple and otherwise), they generally have non-replaceable components. There's just not enough room for connectors and sockets in those devices. So, to make such a device successful, it has to appeal to the average person, not the enthusiast market. Only few companies can market a product to enthusiasts, and it generally involves hand-made cars for half million dollars each. And simply put, there's really no need for such a device. A computer is one thing, but your phone is something that gets used and abused on a regular basis. And by the time your contract expires, technology is so far ahead that upgrading would be as useful as maxing out the RAM on an 8 year old computer. If you look at the most successful gadget company out there, it would be Apple. Like them or not, their success is undeniable. Underlying that success is the theory of providing a quality product that appeals to the average customer. And that's key. Even if you could keep the exact same size but make it upgradeable, there is absolutely no way that you will ever have market out there that would warrant such a device. I'm not going to spend $200 on a phone and drop hundreds of dollars more on upgrades, only to have a worthless device 2 years down the line when the contract expires and you're due for an upgrade. And lastly, most people do not have time to tinker with their phones. We have enough things to worry about, and most of us want a device that works well out of the box, and is sufficient until time to upgrade. From what I can see, only two companies actually realize this simple concept. One is obviously Apple, and the other is Samsung. I can honestly say that the E4GT is just about perfect out of the box, if only Sprint kept their hands off of it and did not load it down with crap.

Mac users?

As much as I dislike Crapple and there products I believe that I have to get a Mac for work :/
I was wondering if any of you guys had a Mac and how is it?

best decision you can make trust me I have had to MacBooks and a mac mini. My Macbook has been nothing but great for college no slow starts, its there when you require it, will not freeze or let you down when you most need it. Theres less malware viruses ect for it so you feel a little more secure. Apple support is a plus this guys will fix any problem you have within warranty and aslong as you did not brake anything on purpose. Besides you can install virtual machine and run windows 8, xp, vista ect its like you have two computers in one.

Or you could build a hackintosh for home. Sandybridge has made building and using one with lion a piece of cake. Under 300 bucks for a nice mac mini performance machine. It's funny how people won't admit to owning any apple products in these threads for fear of being pounced on. At least this section seems better than most.
What kind of job do you have that they would use mac? Macs suck at business stuff

I have a MacBook unibody the one before the retina display have never had any problems. I recommend going to the apple store and trying them out on display.. Besides most people don't like Mac and yet they have never owned one.. So just try it out because what matters is what you want not what me or some one else likes... If you have a question just let me know Id be glad to answer

I work in IT and use them all the time. Actually fixing one right now. And from an IT stand point Macs are no good for buis. And you can run multiple OS's on any PC. That is not a Mac thing they just advertise it because they know you will need windows for something
Once you go MAC you don't go back to "PC"
been in IT since 1982.. been on MAC at my home office for 4 years now. I have 6 laptops of my own and 4 MACS also. 2 mbp, 1 macro, and 1 new while unibody for daughter at college.. I have serviced all pc's from Southern Cali to Washington DC. I have yet to fully need to break down a mac any place ... only hard drives if that. When I repair PC'S laptops at Colleges its always a windows' machine. The reason I switched over was the virus issues with PCs and the constant WTF i need to update today before I start working on my PC. Sure they both have trojans and mail ware. But PC's have viruses and MAC's do not. Meaning PC's can be made inoperable by malicious software a lot more often were as MAC will be used as pons in a greater hacking plan with implanted trojans.... but still operate. Many times without the user ever knowing. Last reason .. economics... take a look at the income scale of MAC user's .. usually a lot higher than your typical PC user. By no means am I saying PC users don't make more money than MAC users.. just are usually in my field experience in a more lucrative high paying career position than a trade "job". Granted you defiantly have infinite more options of software and best of breed hardware options building PC's. If you want to do what you want how you want .. build your own PC box. If you want to power up and get to work on the reason you power'd up every time you power up with out having to restart our machine after using it for extended periods of time opening and closing apps.. going in and out of hibernation/sleep mode for days on end..... MAC is the way to go. .................... on last note.. the pc are great .. mac's are great... the internet is bases off UNIX not DOS. MAC is based off UNIX. If dos went away.. PC would rule hands down. truly its not the hardware man.. its the software that's the issue. I for all OS's merging closely into one within the next 20 years... each upgrade of windows it becomes more MAC. its just how it goes. even Ubuntu with its unity desktop is following suite as well. out of all the computers in my home only one 2 year old Sony has Windows 7 Ultimate on it to flash my GPS and Pimped out Epizzal 4G's Touch.. LOL.. everything else Runs on OS-X and UBUNTU... .. http://forum.xda-developers.com/images/icons/icon6.gif
Did you guys know that in a few years windoze will be releasing Microsux X ... I had to contribute!
Switched in 2010 and haven't looked back since. 2010 MBP upgraded to 8Gb of RAM and a 256Gb Crucial SSD, its been plenty fast, and loaded Win7 on it, but recently pulled that off and put XP on instead.
I was so impressed with it when my PC bit the dust I replaced it with a 27" iMac.
Lol just do Hackintosh. I have one and it beats the crap out of my friend's mac. Go for SB-E and then buy an IB-E cpu.

tried to bog it down by 1. dowloading 25 gigs torrent 2. burn 8.5 dvd 3. streaming music 4. streaming hd video 5 running AI to edit newspaper add 6. surfen web news sites 7. 3 machines RDP 8. backing up data to NAS 9. apple checking for updates.. ALL AT SAME TIME. AND THE MACHINE JUST KEEP SAYING "BRING IT!! BRING IT!" no lag what so ever!.
Sorry PC's.. since I'm not a big PC gamer.... My switch has been a long time coming.. I wish they would start the IM A MAC / PC commercials again too funny.. but all of them true. LMAO.:highfive:
No it's not true because you're comparing computers with intel processors that are far superior to all its predecessors. I can do the exact things you stated with my Core i7-920 machine with no hiccups as well because the jump from Core 2 duo/quad to first gen i7s was 20% increase in performance on average. 2nd generation and 3rd generation are 10-20% better than the first gen nehelams (depending on task).
It does not matter if it's a PC or a Mac. You'll be hard pressed to make any modern CPU from Intel or AMD choke in any way unless you're doing the most demanding of tasks where intel completely dominates.
An updated windows 7 machine from a QUALITY manufacturer (not the cheap hp/dell stuff in retail stores) will last as long as any MBP. There is a reason the commercials stopped. It just didn't work anymore against the improvements in Win 7.
Also i live in the state capital of CA and have family with seniority positions within the gov't and let me tell you. Even though literally everyone has an Ipad...
Out of the thousands of computers, I did not ever encounter mac's in huge quantities. Only windows or custom OS's.
Side note #1 - MBP's use SSD's which allow for insanely fast response times.
#2 - They do get viruses / malware and are usually the fastest to be hacked in any hacking competition due to extensive security vulnerabilities that they take forever to patch which is also one of the main reasons the PCvMac commercials stopped when MS got its act together.

Mac desktops are PCs... You know a personal computer. Just like Dells, HPs, Sony and the like. OSX is pretty but I'm not paying an arm and leg for a name brand. It's like Air Jordan sneakers. Every year its the same hing different colour higher price. Sometimes add some need giltz and glam.

Just bought both an MBA 13" 2012 edition and the Asus Zenbook UX31A. It's my first time using a Mac and I've been a pro-PC person all my life, but I can honestly say that the Air is better than the UX31A, which is the top Ultrabook out right now. The specs are pretty identical, but this is a lot more intuitive and they are basically the same price.
But since this thread is about Android phones, I'll say that I usually just run Parallels to Windows 7 for my Android stuff because I CBA figuring out how Heimdall works instead of Odin haha. Otherwise, I think it's basically the same. Macs are pretty good with automatically finding drivers.

Mac & Android

So android and mac don't play well together. Apple doesn't allow mtp to work on mac and google have not updated their android file transfer app in ages and it's extremely buggy. What apps and methods you guys use to make your life easier? I have been using an app called handshaker, it's a decent app but still not as simple and solid as plugging your phone on windows.
Install windows using boot camp. Problem solved. Best of both worlds then.
Sent from my ONEPLUS A3003 using Tapatalk
I dont want to install windows as i have a macbook air with 128 gb ssd and dont want to waste 30 gigs on windows since i dont really need windows at all.
the main problem is neither apple nor google is concerned with this matter which kind of sucks. i know there's probably a very less number of people using androids and macs together but i'd still love to see some solid solution.
Yea! I've been living with this problem too! Handshaker is nice. But transfer speeds are damn slow.
Well after 20 years of using Macintosh and about 5 of using android, the only way to get things working properly to install windows. Either using boot camp or parallel desktop emulator. Those are the only two fool proof solutions sadly, like it or not.
I agree, android transfer is completely crap for Mac. Having to disconnect and reconnect all the time in order to get one out of three times it works.
It used to work fine on Sony Z1 using 5.1 but marshmallow seems to be the issue to me.

This is sad. I gave up my Mac 2 years ago after trying to get a replacement screen for a 2010 Mac book pro and they told me $400. Bought a touchscreen Dell on sale for same price, windows 10 free upgrade, better processor and RAM, SSD, etc... Apple has always made a sleek looking, good product, but their lack of support without shelling or a ton of cash is why i left their desktop/laptop products. Android is why I left their phone products. They will probably never make anything to work with an Android device unless you pay them. Strictly apples to apples (pun intended).
I do hope you find a solution, cause I was thinking about replacing my wife's I Mac with a newer one, but if I can't use it ever, I'm going to find another win 10 machine.

I just use "File Manager" from cheetah mobile, downloaded from play store. Turn on wifi transfer, type the IP it shows you into your browser or ftp client, transfer files at 10-100x the speed of mtp.
Of course, both devices need to be on the same wifi, which isnt a problem in most cases.
Im sure some other file managers out there have the same function.

yes exactly i too had a 2010 macbook pro and motherboard died. apple customer service asked to pay 36k inr ($500) usd to get the motherboard replaced. he told me apple doesnt allow them to repair motherboards and they have to replace them. i ended up getting a macbook air but even i've decided when my current mac dies i'll switch over to windows.

That is outrageous! And the unibody design was so easy to work on, seriously, 9 screws and you could do anything your self. The price I was quoted was for just the screen, the installation I was going to do myself. Unfortunately, at the time I was looking, there really weren't better prices floating around. I was finally lucky enough to find a decent priced screen just this year, resurrected my MBP and daughter is using for school.
One day people are finally going to realize everything they (apple) make is from China, costs them nothing to manufacture, then they markup like 400%. People complaining about the EPI-pen lady, but she just took a look at a business model and decided to copy it... I'm personally very happy to give my money to a company like one plus where they obviously markup the price, but just don't rip you off straight out the gate, and then make you pay out the nose if something goes wrong.
Haven't had a single issue with my old OnePlus one, which is also under the control of my daughter, and my three is phenomenal as well. Samsung is also another company I'll never give money to in the phone department. My brand new note 3 bezel broke after I put it in one of the "authorized" cases they had. Asked them to fix, and they tried to charge me a ton of money. But the Samsung TVs, wow, no one can compare, so they've got me hooked there.
After writing all this I guess I'm just becoming some sort of hippie or something. Just tired of the greedy companies taking advantage...

To each their own. Ive never had a single problem transferring files this way. On the other hand Ive had problems with plugging it in an using mtp, either with drivers or just how ridiculously slow it is.
The wifi method, theres no drivers involved, is about as fast as you can get regarding transfer speed, and I dont even have to get off my chair to find a cable.
