Rogers HTC TYTN upgrading wm6 - 8525, TyTN, MDA Vario II, JasJam ROM Development

I am new to these forums. I just recieved my HTC TYTN from rogers (Canada) today and was disappointed to find out that they dont have windows mobile 6 upgrade. The PDA has everything I want except this. The more I read on here the more confused I am getting.
My question is if anyone could help me on weither I should try flashing this device with a 3rd party rom or return and get another phone. If I return it I dont see any other PDA's that have all this one has. The HTC touch has no key pad is it any good?
By reading on here its not hard to tell you guys know your PDA's. I dont mind paying more money I just want whats best for windows mobile 6. Any advice you guys can give would be much appreciated.

i have it from 1 year and half and i really cant complain about a single thing
ok, i would complain about the lack of support on publishing new roms, but xda cooks provide enough of them
if you upgrade the phone with the roms you can find here, you will break the warranty, but there s a guide to "refurbish" the phone eventually
and if you follow mr vanx guide on flashing the phone, you wont really have troubles. easier if you use windows xp than vista, but doable on both.

Thanks for the input, I would really like to flash it, I read the guide and flashing seems pretty straight forward but I suppose murphys law is always present. Maybe I can save the current rom and flash it back if needed?
I might wait until tomorrow and sleep on it. I hate to void the warranty on a new device, but I dont see anything else to replace it with on the rogers site.
The reason I want windows mobile 6 is so I can remote desktop onto my servers to monitor and reboot if nessesary when I am not home without carrying the laptop around with me.

From win2005 to Win2003 - Is it easy to downgrade?

I am tempted to install w2005 in my BA but I'am a little afraid that some things I like could not work well. So, I want to know if the downgrade process is easy to execute. Thanks
About as easy as the upgrade, as far as I gather. But know that you will not be able to hide and lock your extended ROM again, which may affect your warranty. And this is sort of like a Ferrari F-50: If you wonder if you can afford it, you can't. In other words if you're not sure you can make this, and live with the results, you shouldn't. On the other hand I'm very satisfied with it! (WM5, not the F-50 - I know I can't afford that!)
I've upgraded and downgraded back and forth 4 times so far. I've decided to stick with WM5 because I got tired of doing it.
So. My conclusion is that back to w2003 is easy. I am starting my w2005 adventure.Thank you GUYS

Windows Mobile 5

Can someone please let me know how I can go back to Windows Mobile 5 from Windows Mobile 6. I am currently trying to figure this out so any advice will help. Thank you.

there isn't any difference. do the same steps with the wm5 rom as you did with wm6. there is thread here discussing this at length.

I called T-mobile and got my Dash Replaced because I was sick of the restart bug. The one they sent as a warranty replacement had WM5 on it. I just stuck with that ROM.
why didn't you just flash back?
no wonder carriers hate putting out new software. people can't figure it out and cry for a new phone.

I take some offense to that. No one has been able to come up with a real solution for the restart problem with the T-mobile WM6 ROM. Others who flashed back wrote that things were missing from the ROM. I am not someone who just quits on new software without trying to figure it out. I troubleshoot for a living and just got sick of the issue, didn't feel like Hard reseting yet again, called My Carrier and they offered this as a solution while they wait for something to come out from Microsoft. I didn't "Cry for a New Phone", it was the solution offered and I took it.

Samsung i780 - Is it possible to run Hard SPL and other ROMs?

Hello Everyone!
I want to thank you all for making this site so informative and to the point - as I have been a frequent visitor since the days of my first (original) SPV. I have finally decided to try a different phone to my usual HTC choice and have just got the Orange i780 (which is a great phone! )
I was wondering if it might be possible to run something like HARD SPL on it and then put on a cooked ROM as the supplied Orange ROM is, as ever, far from thrilling. I would appreciate any help and if anyone wants some more information about the phone (as so little is currently available at the moment) ask away - and I will reply as soon as I get the chance.
Thank you!
I was going to get one of these, is it worth having? Have orange removed all the samsung stuff and put on their own stupid menu?
yup- they have. But its a gorgeous phone so as soon as it becomes possible to put new ROMs on it, it will be one of the best ones around in its form factor. Its nice to have something that feels half the weight of the TYTN2 and more than half as thin
Has anyone got an english rom working on the German Version of the i780? I see it is availiable on www.handit.de at a much cheaper price.
Has anyone tried the SDHC compatibility yet, I want to order a MicroSD card and will get the 8GB if it supports it?

Definetely. It's the fastest WM device ever. The mousepad is really cool. Better resolution (also yet, many programms have problems with it, not correct displaying etc.). Amazing build quality.
One thing that's missing is a cooked rom. The Software has bugs over bugs. a developer customized rom would be amazing.
But the device itself and esp. it's performance (processor) is the best ever!

As a favor to the community would you be so kind as to upload the SDHC drivers from the i780 to the FTP section of the site? That way people with other Samsung devices (SCH-i760, SGH-i760, SCH-i730 etc) could perhaps get full usage out of their SD Cards? The SGH-i780 itself looks pretty cool. Did it come unlocked?
Re: drivers
Hi Dominick,
I would e happy to help but have no idea what thedrivers you are talking about are or how I could get them off the phone - so if you can give me step by step instructions, I will happily do so. No, the phone is locked - and I can't wait to be able to put on cooked ROMs and use another SIM with it. Apart from the ROM gripes, loving the phone!
So in the i780's current state is it full of bugs?...generic and orange branded?
Also, would it not be possible to dump the rom from the generic and then flash to the orange branded device.
Thanks
J273
You make it sound like putting on a diff ROM would be very easy - please let me know how! I have always had to use HardSPL and other methods prior to that... Itsnot really full of bugs, its just the annoying ROM orange with useless things there and ... well I just want to run Schap's ROM for example or any other I choose
Sorry i got no idea im afraid....But i thought thats the way it works.....Use a rom dumper which will dump the rom to a memory card and then build a installable ROM from the dump of the generic handset.
Might be wrong though.
I don't think the i780 is full of bugs, more a couple of glitches which aren't too annoying.
There is no vital bug and there is nothing which can't be fixed with the next OS update.
The most annoying thing was actually that the i780 didn't come with any navigation/GPS software and apparently only Google Maps and Garmin XT mobile seem to work fine, the others(like Tom Tom 6 for example) require the tool GpsGate to work with the i780.
The i780 is VERY fast, not only the CPU but also the GPU. I actually started to love this little thing, it really is a stylish and pretty light powerhouse.
Right now, I think the i780 is the most powerful Windows Mobile 6 Professional smartphone on the market(considering CPU & GPU performance) and also the most underestimated device too. Battery life is decent too, build quality is impaccable. I just wish Samsung would have provided a 5MP camera and a quadband GSM/Triband UMTS functionality, especially since the new Marvell CPU seems to provide hardware support for both.
I have managed to get hold of an Italian version but need a UK ROM .... anyone managed to get hold of one?
Is there any other way to change the ROM to English?
Is this the one from ebay?
I should be getting mine in the next few days
Cant you like hard reset it same with HTC's and then select the language at the start?
Have you tried holding down 6 and the # key when you power the phone up..this should hard reset it....if its like other samsung win mobiles.
Yes from Ebay ... arrived next day .....
Have done a hard reset ... no joy.
Ahh thought so.....I was going to bid and then it ended.
Hmmm.....i would of thought all the roms are the same
Really lovely piece of kit though .... using it anyway .... crash course in Italian ! LOL
ha ha ha....
Theres gotta be a way to change the language ...hopefully someone will know.

Exchanging 6900, which rom?

I'm exchanging the xv6900 for a xv6800, for the keyboard.
What's the latest info on what rom I should return it with?

You can't go back! Not exactly sure how your gonna pull it off. Someone else said they changed the startup images to look like the stock, but it's pretty risky. If you return it with any ROM, I would suggest cooking a new ROM to match as closely as possible. The only problem is, the Radio is changed, and the info will be displayed on boot up. I imagine at some point, someone would notice it.
Bottom line is, you've completely altered the device, which voided your warranty.
Warranty
Yeh, I knew the risks, maybe stuck with the Vogue.
I'm within the 30 days return for exchange time.
So what happens if they don't like my radio version?
They simply wont exchange it? Or do they close the account? Or do they escort me out back and shoot me?
BTW

No prob! But, if they do see you've altered it, depending on when they notice, will probably depend on their action. Who knows, maybe if you can make it look official, and they accept, then it's their fault for accepting and can't refuse down the road.
Personally, I traded in my 6800 for the device, because of the extra amount of memory. The only differences I see that really stick out is the keyboard and WiFi, both I could live without. But, I couldn't stand the small amount of memory. I would imagine the worst they would do is refuse the trade, I highly doubt they would terminate the contract.
Found the Geeks thread
This looks like a good link for 'fixing' your Verizon to close to original.
I finally found this after many searches and after posting here
Anyone following this link, be sure to read everything here, there's considerations about the radio version and brinking the phone, so be careful.
Acutally this link is for the 6800 Titan, I'm looking for the Vogue one if there is one....

Problem is, there is official stock ROM available to flash, which you've probably seen by now. At least there wasn't a couple of weeks ago. That's why the xv6900 ROM threads have warnings everywhere.
i am working on a way to get the xv6900 almost all the way back to stock. it is a multistep process but i have done it once. if you want more info let me know...
Sure
I'm keeping the 6900, thanks to some tips about the lower memory size of the 6800. It is kinda frustrating to have to decide between a keyboard or more ram. But also the size of the 6800 would make it less pocketable, I want the keyboard, but the same size as the vogue....
Anyway if I do need to return this for some reason it would be great to have a thread on converting it so yes pls thanks.

If you haven't yet, get Resco Keyboard. About $20, it's one of those things you must have.
touchpal
i personally think touchpal is the best if you use 6.1 you need to use the 6.1 version or your phone will reset while texting i send around two thousand a month and traded my mogul for the touch for the more memory and believe me the touch is the one to have especially if you put alot of stuff on your device

htc roms on non branded

Hey guys,
Sorry this has to have been answered on the forums but i dont know what search string to use so i thought id just ask with the risk of been shouted at,
I have only ever worked for cellular networks within technical support areas that re brand htc phones so i have always had to cid unlock etc, but since moving on i have bought a blackstone unbranded! whats the crack, can you install any rom out the box? due to the £500 price tag of this phone i dont want to kill it!!
cheers
Branding is all just software-based anyway, so you can flash any Blackstone ROM you like.
If you don't want to risk killing it, don't flash. There's always a chance that it will brick your device
yeah i always do my homework before flashing and have never had a phone killed yet, although up untill now i have never had to pay for one myself always got them for free!! thanks for your advice
