From win2005 to Win2003 - Is it easy to downgrade? - MDA III, XDA III, PDA2k, 9090 General

I am tempted to install w2005 in my BA but I'am a little afraid that some things I like could not work well. So, I want to know if the downgrade process is easy to execute. Thanks

About as easy as the upgrade, as far as I gather. But know that you will not be able to hide and lock your extended ROM again, which may affect your warranty. And this is sort of like a Ferrari F-50: If you wonder if you can afford it, you can't. In other words if you're not sure you can make this, and live with the results, you shouldn't. On the other hand I'm very satisfied with it! (WM5, not the F-50 - I know I can't afford that!)

I've upgraded and downgraded back and forth 4 times so far. I've decided to stick with WM5 because I got tired of doing it.

So. My conclusion is that back to w2003 is easy. I am starting my w2005 adventure.Thank you GUYS

I just upgraded to the 8525 what should I do first?

I upgraded from 8125 to the 8525 and would like to upgrade the rom to wm6. I would like extra memory. I'm staying with cingular/ATT and plan on just swapping my sim card. Do I have to unlock my phone? What do I need to do and which rom is the latest/best w/most free memory and still ATT friendly. Thanks. I've read through the post, but I'm a little overwhelmed.
Chris
You want a good rom that is AT&T friendly, I would say vp3gs rom hands down.
welcome to the 8525. start here...lot's of good info and reading. then let us know if U still have specific questions:

You knw ive seen alot of first post were people dont knw what they want they state basic things like whats the best rom, how do I upgrade, ect. I was really suprised to find that you knew what you wanted and look you got some good advice, Im glad to know that even though this community tends to flame noobs that if you ask your question correctly that you will get the information you request. Way to go.

Having been in your exact place just a few short weeks ago, i'll tell you my experience. The very first thing I did was upgrade to Hard SPL v7. From my reading, this is essential to keep from bricking your phone. Although it's not fool proof, but it makes it much harder to mess everything up. I looked around and read all the different threads on all the ROMs. From looking at the pictures and reading the info on each one, I decided on VP3G 3.60 as it's an official ATT rom with some extras. I also switched radios a couple of times to find the one that gave me the best reception for my area, which ended up being 1.50. I didn't unlock my phone unless updating to any of the above did that. There is a site that goes through each install window and tells you what to choose, but I can't seem to find it right now. I don't full understand all of this stuff but i'm slowly learning it. Good luck on your updates and hope it goes as smoothly as mine has.

Right now I'm running dutty's ultralite http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=329642 I started with Black, then went to some others and like VPG quite a bit, then tried TNT, then Cyphol's Gold, and finally I'm at the ultralite stage as I found that a lot of them just had stuff I didn't want/need and I preferred to take care of all of that myself (you'll determine that on your own though).
Definitely get HardSPL, and just play around with some of the main ROMs, the ultralites will have more memory by definition, but you may find that some are just too bare bones.
With regards to walkthrough's look at mrvanx's site, http://www.mrvanx.org/cms/ he has a ton of great walkthroughs that are ROM specific. Should get you started quite nicely.
Install HardSPL
Install vp3G's WM6 AT&T Rom
If you picked up retail less then 30 days ago, take it back and pick up a 8925/Tilt.

Thanks so much for the quick replies. My phone will be here on Tuesday, I ordered a refurbished. I will post an update w/shipped rom when it get's here. I waited for the Tilt to come out so they would clearance the 8525. I got my 8125 for $79 and now the 8525 for $99. Not bad I guess. Well I think I will try vp3gs first. I think if I try the Ultralight's, I have to unlock the memory area or something correct me if I'm wrong. W/Vp3gs rom, it should be like flashing a new rom from AT&T. But I will follow the directions to Hard-SPL first then to VP3Gs. Thanks again. Will post more on Wednesday.
Chris
Ok, followed all the directions in the forums. Everything went perfect. Very easy. I now have VP3Gs latest and upgraded the radio to 1.54.07. Everything works. I've added my old software. Found out that SPB Pocket Plus 4.0 brings the Hermes to a halt so I installed 3.2. I like the tabs on my today screen and the task switcher better than the HTC. Battery life seems a little less than the 8125. I think it's a little less than with 1.43 radio. I'm in central NJ and I didn't seem to notice a different between the two radios. My phone came with an old version of everything. I think the radio was 1.16 or something. Anyhow I will post more later. Thanks again everyone for the advice. Still shocked at how easy it was.
Chris
Before doing anything to your 8525; Research Research RESEARCH!
The last thing you want to do is put anything on your new phone right away. I know you want WM6 and probably can't wait to get it on your phone. First you need to research as much as possible until you feel comfortable, really comfortable with what you are planning to do.
I have vp3G's WM6 on my 8525. I waited and researched threads for over 2 weeks before commiting to it. So far so good I have to say. Read this guide first, it'll give you a good idea of what you will be doing. I'm not trying to tell you whats best here, I'm new to this too and just want to give you a heads up. Beware of people who tell you what they think is best for your phone, especially when they don't bother to tell you why.
Good luck, you're going to like your new 8525, although after sending back my original phone for a keyboard issue I went through 2 remanufactured 8525's before AT&T finally shipped me a brand new one. The screens on the reman'd ones kept locking up .

Rogers HTC TYTN upgrading wm6

I am new to these forums. I just recieved my HTC TYTN from rogers (Canada) today and was disappointed to find out that they dont have windows mobile 6 upgrade. The PDA has everything I want except this. The more I read on here the more confused I am getting.
My question is if anyone could help me on weither I should try flashing this device with a 3rd party rom or return and get another phone. If I return it I dont see any other PDA's that have all this one has. The HTC touch has no key pad is it any good?
By reading on here its not hard to tell you guys know your PDA's. I dont mind paying more money I just want whats best for windows mobile 6. Any advice you guys can give would be much appreciated.
i have it from 1 year and half and i really cant complain about a single thing
ok, i would complain about the lack of support on publishing new roms, but xda cooks provide enough of them
if you upgrade the phone with the roms you can find here, you will break the warranty, but there s a guide to "refurbish" the phone eventually
and if you follow mr vanx guide on flashing the phone, you wont really have troubles. easier if you use windows xp than vista, but doable on both.
Thanks for the input, I would really like to flash it, I read the guide and flashing seems pretty straight forward but I suppose murphys law is always present. Maybe I can save the current rom and flash it back if needed?
I might wait until tomorrow and sleep on it. I hate to void the warranty on a new device, but I dont see anything else to replace it with on the rogers site.
The reason I want windows mobile 6 is so I can remote desktop onto my servers to monitor and reboot if nessesary when I am not home without carrying the laptop around with me.

Any way to root my Evo without using a computer????

Just got a replacement Evo today and really wanna root and flash CM7 or MikFroyo, but my laptop is getting repaired and I was wondering if it was possible to root by downloading and flashing files right on the phone?? I know this is a longshot....lol....Please no flamers.....
I looked around for the same thing a while back before rooting and didn't have any luck. I think you need the computer. I'm pretty much a n00b so I could be more than wrong here.
Yeah, something like jailbreakme.com for the iphones. I hear ya. I haven't seen anything come up on any blogs, or anywhere on this forum. (and i assume they'd be among the first to know)
sorry mate!
Not as of yet, at least not permanently. There's a program called z4root but doesn't make it permanent. As soon as you reboot the phone it's back to stock. I'd just be patient and wait for your laptop. In the meantime keep doing your research and reading about the different problems you may run into, etc. That way you'll be prepped for almost anything. I read about rooting for about three months before actually doing it, best choice with the phone other than the initial purchase.

How can I get my Nitro back to stock

I recently let a guy borrow my phone while we were fishing a bass tournament and he dropped it in the lake. He gave me his nearly brand new Nitro as a replacement. The problem is that he had rooted his Nitro and didn't back it up before he rooted it. I want to get the phone back to stock like it came out of the box but being the noob that I am, I have no idea how to do that. I am sure I could pay LG to do it for me for a price. I am a disabled vet and my disability checks aren't as big as my active duty checks were so every nickel I have is more than accounted for. Is there anybody out there that can help with the software and directions? I am fairly computer savvy but I have a long way to go as far as my cell phone knowledge goes. Thanks a million for any help you guys can provide!!

If you can wait just a couple more days, there will be a very easy way to install the latest Android version to your phone that will restore it to factory defaults but with the new Android version released by AT&T. It's supposed to officially release on July 31. Once that day comes, you should be able to follow these steps: http://www.lg.com/us/mobile-phones/ATT_Update/index.jsp
Thanks!!
Man, it will be that simple? No more root or anything? I know I must sound like a complete moron but until I learn alot more about roms, etc, I just need my phone to be stock. He said it had clock mod or something like that. I assume all that will be gone as well? As soon as I get an upgrade availability, I am going to use this LG as a guinea pig as I learn about phone customization. I'm sure I'll end up ruining it but maybe I will learn something first. Thank you very much for the response. I can definitely wait a couple more days.

Well have fun lol. that tool does seem pretty easy. I bet it could be used in case anything gets screwed up to... but you never know..
And clockworkmod is a backup type thing where you can flash zips ( like roms, kernels, etc ), or make backups of your phone, and restore them.
But really though if you dont care about a little faster phone and a little more custumization then normal you probally wont need to flash roms and such
but have fun

Yeah, that update method will remove Clockworkmod and you will be unrooted. There actually wasn't a very efficient way to get back to 100% stock until this new update comes out, so it's pretty good timing on your part. ;p
Well, guys, I got my phone updated...I think. Right in the middle of the update, my doorbell rand and my dog took off for the door and pulled my usb cable out of the phone. I got it plugged back in withing a couple of seconds. It seems to be working okay. I wonder if it messed anything up. I tried to re-do the update but the LG Update tool said the phone was updated and wouldn't update again. I guess we will see.
That's not good...

[Q] Factory reset and upgrade question

HI everyone,
My girlfriend has a T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy T-999 phone and she is using Straight Talk as her provider. She is using Android Version 4.1.2 ( which I wanted to root before I factory reset her phone- which I did before via the Dial Pad but at the last option after I wait the 30 seconds to a minute the last option isn't there; so I left it alone. and updated her phone to 4.3 ) But it isn't necessary to root her phone today unless it's very easy.
What I wanted to know is, is it safe to Factory Reset her Phone and than allow Kies to upgrade her firmware to 4.3 and still be able to use Straight Talk as long I put back in her APN settings that she is using right now?
Now as for me,
I own a
Verizon S4
AT&T S4 - Which was blacklisted because I bought it off Craigslist and a man called it in stolen and got me for $550.That's a story in itself
2x AT&T S3-One has a cracked screen but the digitizer is working fine, it's just the outer screen that is cracked, and I have a working S# which I use on a daily basis.
My issues, I will look up and spend some more time on XDA today and learn how to do everything correctly.
I wouldn't mind testing everything I learn either on the cracked S3 or my blacklisted S4 which are both on AT&T network.
I have rooted only phone back in the day,( a long time ago via dial pad which i think it might of been on 4.1.1. firmware) .- phone that would cause an issue on my part. Now, when I am not working I search and have read MANY MANY times on XDA and wanted to let everyone know that I appreciate everything that you all do on your own free time. But most importantly today, i need to work on her phone and get it updated and working correctly.
Thanks in advance for anyone who responds to this post.:good:
Are you trying to root or unlock? The first part about the dial pad and option not being there sounds like the unlock method, I don't know of any root method involving the dial pad

Yes, that should be fine, but if it is rooted or modified it may fail to initiate the flash. In this case go to the firmware thread linked in my sig and flash the firmware via Odin. (Let me know if you have any questions about that)
Off topic but I have to ask if you'd be willing to try something on that spare AT&T device. But if you are at all skeptical or uncomfortable doing this, it is perfectly fine to decline....
In case you dont know, AT&T once again seems to have decided to withhold the stock firmware for the new 4.4.2 update. This causes tons of problems for users here on xda! I have built the stock firmware for the I747 myself, but have no way to test it, so ive been sitting on it for nearly 2 weeks! If this is something you'd be willing to consider, please let me know. (I will tell you everything I know about the possible negatives before you do).
Like I said, if you're not comfortable doing that, its perfectly fine. Im just trying to find someone with a spare S3 willing to take the risk of testing it. (Risk is minimal imo, or I wouldn't even bother asking). But please do not be afraid to tell me no! (And you dont have to explain yourself if you do!)
Sorry for going OT, I just have to take the opportunity to ask when I can! I just dont want to ask someone to test on their primary device because there's always a chance things can go wrong.

Yes i am willing to help you out. I just need to run out to BJ's and get some food for my kids and the Cat food I should be back in about an hr or so, once I am back , i am willing to help you out with this. I will do a simple backup of the phone but you will have to walk me through the steps since I haven't rooted a phone nor done any flashing, if you don't mind doing something like a Google Plus hangout, i am more than willing to help you out with this project. Is that ok with you?
Yup that'll be fine. Thank you! Ill pm you in the meantime to let you know about any potential negatives before actually committing to flashing it.
Just so you know now though, worst case scenario is a hard brick. And we have not been able to get our debrick method to work on kk yet.
I am confident that will not be the result, but there is always that chance when flashing anything, tested or not. Just be aware that currently we cannot recover a hard brick updated with kk. You can pay for a jtag service, but if it did come to that I wouldnt be able to help on the cost more than just a few bucks.
Like I said, that is the worst that can happen, but if I thought there was a good chance of it, I wouldnt bother asking to begin with.
Thanks again and check your PM's when you get back.

Right now, the way I am looking at it, is I have another phone S3 running 4.2.1 and those S4's, People like you have committed their time over and over again, it's the least I can do. And if it does get hard bricked, when there is a time and it is fixed, you could just help me or by than I will know exactly what I am doing, and can do it myself. But I am willing to help you out and take the chance. I will PM you when I get back bud.
When I get back I will finish talking to you and than we can start.
