[Q] Factory reset and upgrade question - T-Mobile, Samsung Galaxy SIII

HI everyone,
My girlfriend has a T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy T-999 phone and she is using Straight Talk as her provider. She is using Android Version 4.1.2 ( which I wanted to root before I factory reset her phone- which I did before via the Dial Pad but at the last option after I wait the 30 seconds to a minute the last option isn't there; so I left it alone. and updated her phone to 4.3 ) But it isn't necessary to root her phone today unless it's very easy.
What I wanted to know is, is it safe to Factory Reset her Phone and than allow Kies to upgrade her firmware to 4.3 and still be able to use Straight Talk as long I put back in her APN settings that she is using right now?
Now as for me,
I own a
Verizon S4
AT&T S4 - Which was blacklisted because I bought it off Craigslist and a man called it in stolen and got me for $550.That's a story in itself
2x AT&T S3-One has a cracked screen but the digitizer is working fine, it's just the outer screen that is cracked, and I have a working S# which I use on a daily basis.
My issues, I will look up and spend some more time on XDA today and learn how to do everything correctly.
I wouldn't mind testing everything I learn either on the cracked S3 or my blacklisted S4 which are both on AT&T network.
I have rooted only phone back in the day,( a long time ago via dial pad which i think it might of been on 4.1.1. firmware) .- phone that would cause an issue on my part. Now, when I am not working I search and have read MANY MANY times on XDA and wanted to let everyone know that I appreciate everything that you all do on your own free time. But most importantly today, i need to work on her phone and get it updated and working correctly.
Thanks in advance for anyone who responds to this post.:good:

Are you trying to root or unlock? The first part about the dial pad and option not being there sounds like the unlock method, I don't know of any root method involving the dial pad

Yes, that should be fine, but if it is rooted or modified it may fail to initiate the flash. In this case go to the firmware thread linked in my sig and flash the firmware via Odin. (Let me know if you have any questions about that)
Off topic but I have to ask if you'd be willing to try something on that spare AT&T device. But if you are at all skeptical or uncomfortable doing this, it is perfectly fine to decline....
In case you dont know, AT&T once again seems to have decided to withhold the stock firmware for the new 4.4.2 update. This causes tons of problems for users here on xda! I have built the stock firmware for the I747 myself, but have no way to test it, so ive been sitting on it for nearly 2 weeks! If this is something you'd be willing to consider, please let me know. (I will tell you everything I know about the possible negatives before you do).
Like I said, if you're not comfortable doing that, its perfectly fine. Im just trying to find someone with a spare S3 willing to take the risk of testing it. (Risk is minimal imo, or I wouldn't even bother asking). But please do not be afraid to tell me no! (And you dont have to explain yourself if you do!)
Sorry for going OT, I just have to take the opportunity to ask when I can! I just dont want to ask someone to test on their primary device because there's always a chance things can go wrong.

Yes i am willing to help you out. I just need to run out to BJ's and get some food for my kids and the Cat food I should be back in about an hr or so, once I am back , i am willing to help you out with this. I will do a simple backup of the phone but you will have to walk me through the steps since I haven't rooted a phone nor done any flashing, if you don't mind doing something like a Google Plus hangout, i am more than willing to help you out with this project. Is that ok with you?

Yup that'll be fine. Thank you! Ill pm you in the meantime to let you know about any potential negatives before actually committing to flashing it.
Just so you know now though, worst case scenario is a hard brick. And we have not been able to get our debrick method to work on kk yet.
I am confident that will not be the result, but there is always that chance when flashing anything, tested or not. Just be aware that currently we cannot recover a hard brick updated with kk. You can pay for a jtag service, but if it did come to that I wouldnt be able to help on the cost more than just a few bucks.
Like I said, that is the worst that can happen, but if I thought there was a good chance of it, I wouldnt bother asking to begin with.
Thanks again and check your PM's when you get back.

Right now, the way I am looking at it, is I have another phone S3 running 4.2.1 and those S4's, People like you have committed their time over and over again, it's the least I can do. And if it does get hard bricked, when there is a time and it is fixed, you could just help me or by than I will know exactly what I am doing, and can do it myself. But I am willing to help you out and take the chance. I will PM you when I get back bud.
When I get back I will finish talking to you and than we can start.

How can I get my Nitro back to stock

I recently let a guy borrow my phone while we were fishing a bass tournament and he dropped it in the lake. He gave me his nearly brand new Nitro as a replacement. The problem is that he had rooted his Nitro and didn't back it up before he rooted it. I want to get the phone back to stock like it came out of the box but being the noob that I am, I have no idea how to do that. I am sure I could pay LG to do it for me for a price. I am a disabled vet and my disability checks aren't as big as my active duty checks were so every nickel I have is more than accounted for. Is there anybody out there that can help with the software and directions? I am fairly computer savvy but I have a long way to go as far as my cell phone knowledge goes. Thanks a million for any help you guys can provide!!

If you can wait just a couple more days, there will be a very easy way to install the latest Android version to your phone that will restore it to factory defaults but with the new Android version released by AT&T. It's supposed to officially release on July 31. Once that day comes, you should be able to follow these steps: http://www.lg.com/us/mobile-phones/ATT_Update/index.jsp
Thanks!!
Man, it will be that simple? No more root or anything? I know I must sound like a complete moron but until I learn alot more about roms, etc, I just need my phone to be stock. He said it had clock mod or something like that. I assume all that will be gone as well? As soon as I get an upgrade availability, I am going to use this LG as a guinea pig as I learn about phone customization. I'm sure I'll end up ruining it but maybe I will learn something first. Thank you very much for the response. I can definitely wait a couple more days.

Well have fun lol. that tool does seem pretty easy. I bet it could be used in case anything gets screwed up to... but you never know..
And clockworkmod is a backup type thing where you can flash zips ( like roms, kernels, etc ), or make backups of your phone, and restore them.
But really though if you dont care about a little faster phone and a little more custumization then normal you probally wont need to flash roms and such
but have fun

Yeah, that update method will remove Clockworkmod and you will be unrooted. There actually wasn't a very efficient way to get back to 100% stock until this new update comes out, so it's pretty good timing on your part. ;p
Well, guys, I got my phone updated...I think. Right in the middle of the update, my doorbell rand and my dog took off for the door and pulled my usb cable out of the phone. I got it plugged back in withing a couple of seconds. It seems to be working okay. I wonder if it messed anything up. I tried to re-do the update but the LG Update tool said the phone was updated and wouldn't update again. I guess we will see.
That's not good...

[Q] Helping fiance root his Candian/Bell S3 SGH-1747M

The thing is, we weren't even going to root it. I thought that Teamviewer Quicksupport supported all S3's.
I looked and he is running 4.1.1. So...I'm not sure what the big deal is, but no matter what, Quicksupport is not "supported" when we go to the Play Store. If there is a simple fix, I would love this, because he is not tech-savvy and this is why we got this model.
However -
I've only rooted one phone in my life before, when there was only really one way of rooting. It seems I have read that problem abound with these S3 models - more specifically, IMEI may be lost, and choosing exactly which way to root, since there are varying stock kernels.
I see this thread here on the IMEI backup/injection. Am I safe to assume, that is where I start? (I have read that the Bell is just a ATT version, so will the ATT version instructions work here? I will ask in that thread but not sure).
Then - once that is done - I have to pick a way to root it that works for Bell's SIII SGH-1747M. That is where I am running into a bit of a wall. I wonder if I can get someone who has done this with this model to help me out and pick a safe way to mod it? Do I need to post more info to help decide this? I can get on his device and get whatever info is needed.
I also read, that perhaps Bell's stock kernels either do or do not need unsecuring (not quite sure after a lot of reading) before doing anything else. I really am trying to learn - it's just all very daunting and when I'm reading and not understanding, I can still read til the sun explodes and never be able to do this correctly. Well, maybe if I had an unending supply of phones.
Thank you for your help...
I would just ask in the IMEI and other forums but they are not available to me (either post count too low or I'm not sure).
Sincerely,
Foxdev

Also, does anyone know with this model if Teamviewer Quicksupport just doesn't work at all? I cant get answers from Teamviewer. If it did I wouldn't need to root the stupid thing!
i don't understand why you believe you need to root to have this app supported. i attempted to use the app and it told me i needed to download an app from here. try that before you root?
edit: also i am rooted and it still did not allow me to use the app. rooting isn't your solution here

[Q] Samsung note 2

First of all I would like to thank all of you hear that have sound wisdom in dealing with my nightmare. I'm so new to this that my last phone's antennae is still on the top of my care and phone is in it's big carrying bag LOL. I'm 50 years old but am not done trying to learn something new. Here's the problem. I have a note 2 i317 that i bought online from someone. It's build number is jedi xp 9 android 4.1.2 Dernel version 3.0.31 SaberKernel_07+ptmr3 ect ect. So I have little to no signal strength and cannot hook up to the internet. I've called straight talk and spent an hour or two with them as well to no avail. I've been up and down these posts but I'm lost as how to employ some of the things that I have read about. Remember that I'm a noob to the max. I would love someone to put the instructions on how to fix my phone, in plain english that i can understand. I thought I might have a bad sim card as well but don't know how to check it. I've put at least 6 different apn's in and nothing. My old phone worked great in my house now i have this 500 dollars ornament that I can barely even get calls on. PLEASE can someone help me? I would be very grateful to say the least. I've read if you install something wrong that you can brick your device (whatever that means, but it doesn't sound good). I will be anxiously awaiting for the bravest soul to write me back. I say brave cause with me it might take a while. Sorry
Sincerely
Ed

Would love to help you Ed, need more information on what you mean by 'low signal / cannot connect to internet'. Do you have normal phone service i.e. make calls & send receive texts?
Did the phone ever work at one point, or once you gained possession and tried it, you got the described result? I don't have your AT&T version phone but may be able to help with more info from you.
Is the modem is ur carrier modem?
Have u tried to change the modem to your carrier modem?

Yes it does work with voice and text messages but no mms and I can't connect to the internet cause of the weak signal I suppose. I haven't tried a new sim card just yet. Installed one that they sent me 5 months ago but when I called them today to activate it was no longer any good. They told me I took too long to activate it and they were sending out another one. As for the signal ...it's very weak. Like one bar two at the most. When we went to oshkosh over the weekend I saw that most everyone was on their cell phone and I couldn't call my kids unless I went searching for an area where my phone would work. I never had this problem before with my other phone that was through straight talk. I spent all day today looking for some more possibilities here and saw that maybe my modem on the phone is no good. I tried to download one and I did but haven't put it into the phone cause I'm scared that I might do it wrong and then the phone will be even more messed up than it is. i believe it's this one i717-ics-ucle2. The guy said it worked good for his straight talk. But if you all think that it's something different then please let me know. Thank you all very much for your time and patience with me. I will definitely try to learn more now that I found this wonderful website.

Hi Ed,
the phone has been modified by the owner who sold it to you. He has changed the software oh the Note2. The Problem is we don't know whether there was any problem in signal for him as well. First check whether the SIM is working fine on any other phone. If it does, then I'm afraid you might have to restore the phone to the original Software to make sure this is not a Hardware issues.

from ur model no its the AT&T variant so post your prob here they will be able to help better http://forum.xda-developers.com/forumdisplay.php?f=1870 in Q&A thread
chk under settings/more settings/network mode- if its auto and see if it works and is there any circle on your signal bar
if not do some reading in AT&T thread it will help you rather thread there will get you prominent response
stock rom + patches http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2354944 the patches will help you get the right apn and work right with at&t
modem http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1986480
and yes dont try to use traingle away in custom rom as it need stock rom orelse it may lead to brick , just do some reading there or wait for proper assistance from some1 using the At&T variant
Ed, I'm hoping the links provided to you from other posters has helped. Some of the suggestions have been to try flashing new modems (you're hesitant) and even to install a new ROM. If you have managed to correct your problem, kindly update the thread so other users can benefit from your experience.
If you've had no joy, pursue within the forum for your specific device (AT&T it seems) and good luck!

Hi all and thanks again for the help you have given me. I just got my new sim card today and it seemed to help. I can get on the internet now but my signal is still only one bar and sometimes not there at all. But at least I can connect via wifi. So the sim was partly to blame. Tweeny...I never said that I wouldn't put another radio or modem on my phone, I'm just not too sure about how to do it just yet. I don't want to ruin my phone anymore than it is. I should just dive into it and see what happens. If anyone else has anymore ideas as to why i have poor reception and also I still can't mms, please let me know. Thank you all once again. I will be a regular visitor here and hopefully one day I can be as confident and resourceful as all of you. God bless you all
Hi ed
i reckon u could read up and try flashing a different modem. beyond that flash a different rom. but u obviously have a lot of reading b4 that. good luck

[Q][HELP]S3 Hard Bricked after Flashing Illusions

I FIXED IT
Here's the Link to my Guide.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2369125
Okay, So here's what I did.
I flashed the latest Illusions ROM for my S3 and the Slim AIO 7 for 4.2.2 (since Illusions is based out of SLIM, AOKP, PA, CM, ETC). Then TWRP 2.6.0.0 said that SuperSu wasn't installed (what the heck?!?!?) and it prompted me to install su so I was like "What the heck, why not" so I swiped for yes. Then the screen went black for a good 20 minutes. I got worried, did a battery pull and tried to but straight to recovery... no bueno. Same for booting to dl mode. I plugged my phone in to my computer without the battery and the red LED comes on for 10 seconds and then it dies. It prompted windows to install the QHUSB_DL driver and it failed. WHAT THE HECK JUST HAPPENED?!?
Is there anything I can do to unbrick it?
Do I have to JTAG/JIG or what? If so, can anyone direct me to it? (Last resort)
I'm on the MD4 bootloader and modem.
I really need to get this phone fixed before I go to basic on the 23rd of July.
Other info: Yes, I already went to the local Sprint store (not to get a replacement. That would be irresponsible of me considering my S3 is built by me from the MoBo on up) to get help on flashing it back to stock.
Jtag is the only way and you need to send it to someone who does that.

Okay, So here's what I did.
I flashed the latest Illusions ROM for my S3 and the Slim AIO 7 for 4.2.2 (since Illusions is based out of SLIM, AOKP, PA, CM, ETC). No. Looks like I'm going back to my ogEvo. Won't be able to use that service until after the Navy is done with me. FML. I still can't believe I made a noob mistake. -_____- I have never bricked a phone and this is ironic because i usually de-brick phones... not brick 'em.

I JUST FIXED IT! LOL. I'm in the middle of Barnes and noble and I just fixed it. I'll put down directions for a HOW TO for my method, but it involves having Linux.
HARD BRICK FIX W/O THE JTAG!
and I'll have to give credit. I finally figured out how to dd that file that was posted by (I don't have his username atm) but yeah! I got it to work. His method needs a little more instruction.
Just booted to DL mode
Yeah, if I may, please don't make a guide thread for that. It will only encourage people to flash international roms.

glad to hear you got it working.

Yes, well, some people would like the convenience of not having to send their phone off and spending 60 dollars to get it fixed. And there are many ways to hard brick an S3 and I think that this would be a convenient way of fixing their phone.
Mine was a legit mistake. I'm a veteran flasher of ROMs and everyone does slip up.

Well if you do something like that, you should own up to it and pay the $60 bucks to get it fixed. International roms don't magically wind up on your flashing queue in recovery.
I obviously can't stop you from posting anything, but just keep that in mind.
Good day.

Yes, well. I can't exactly do that since I'm in the Navy and I'm going to be gone for the next two months. I prefer to find a method BEFORE paying the 60 dollars to unbrick. Dude, this to help everyone. YES I MADE A MISTAKE. We all do. I understand its frustrating. Even I get frustrated. But why should I pay 60 dollars to have someone else fix my phone when I can fix it myself? I'm not a noob at flashing.

It's a fine line we walk... We here at XDA want to be helpful to "noobs," but we also want to express the importance of reading and critical thinking before acting.
This argument came up a month or two ago. There's an easy way to make the ROMs check the phone model prior to flashing. This would be a great way to prevent hard-bricks, as the installation will abort on the wrong device. The issue that arises is two-fold:
1) There are many Devs and not all will implement this device check.
2) People will start getting lazy with their flashing, as it seems "idiot proof."
We are actually seeing this with the newest CM10.1 releases. Despite it being clearly spelled out in installation threads (if they read the last 3-4 pages of the thread), a lot of people are trying to flash them without updating their bootloader. They then get the infamous system 7 error. I was answering threads one after the next with people asking the exact same question about the system 7 error. A simple 5-minute perusal of the forums (or even just the CM thread) would've yielded the results, but people don't want to put in the "hard work."
In the case of hard-bricks and your guide, I don't fully agree with CNexus (it happens from time-to-time, but he's a quality guy and dev). If it works a good percentage of the time, I think it's a valuable tool that can help a lot of people. That being said, one of the "good" things about a hard-brick is that people generally learn their lesson after one. I've seen people here on XDA that hard-bricked their device (due to carelessness), had to get it JTAG-ed, then came back to become advocates for reading the posts/directions thoroughly. It's amazing how $60 and losing your phone for a week will make people a lot more sober about flashing a Rom.
I don't doubt for a minute that having an "easy" fix for hard-bricks will reduce the impact of this lesson.
That being said, I also believe that having this guide is a good thing. My recommendation would be to rewrite the beginning of the guide to include a strong disclaimer about the dangers of flashing a Rom not meant for your device. I understand that you're trying to take the approach of "hey, we are all noobs at times, it's not that big of a deal," but I think it'll reinforce the lazy mentality of a good number of flashers.
Just my two cents. I'm glad you were able to fix your phone and to find a way to boot into download mode from the SD card so you can rewrite the bootloader partition from Odin.

SM-G925T problems. Please help ASAP. Thanks

I have yet to find a answer to this question anywhere. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
I have a SM-G925T and I had rooted and flashed roms to this device in the past and have been able fix all of the problems I have run into until now. I am not currently able to use my phone for texting/caling/mobile data until I connect to wifi (with wifi calling on t-mobile) I am not able to do anything, but when I do connect to wifi I can make calls and tests. I have been looking everywhere and not seen anyone with the same problem. I feel as though I corrupt the EFS folder or IMEI as my IMEI now shows 360000000000006 and the actual IMEI is entirely different. If anyone has an answer to this that doesn't involve sending it to Samsung I would love the help.
What have you tried to fix this problem? Reset APN? Reflash rom? What rom are you using? Also dont sent it to Samsung, just ask for tmobile to replace it unless you dont have insurance.

The problem is rooting.
Returning to stock will fix and solve all your problems.

i ran into the same issue 2 days ago and searched this plus many other sites for a solution. i kept getting answers saying something about a root key needed to be fixed. or the other answer i was getting told was to flash [KERNEL] UniKernel v8-0002 COH9. i ultimately ended up taking it back to t-mobile and got a new phone. but the manager told me it was missing certificates and the stock kernel. i hope this little piece of information helps, and i hope you have better luck in restoring your phone than i did.
Every time this phone S6edge, gets an update it becomes harder and riskier to root the S6e and still have a working phone.
This top of the line device (until the S7 gets here) isn't your average phone to experiment with, try a plain android like a nexus Google phone, there's probably a handful of developers working on the Nexus alone Vs one (maybe) for the S6e?
I know xda forums are all about taking control of your phone but not this puppy, you must surrender to Samsung on this one.
My phone is 6 months old and works great, even after updates it just gets better and better and after marshmallow gets here this phone will be a greater device.
I have stayed stock and never attempted to root because I was following and reading all threads started on the S6e and it was a hot mess, a lot of stuff and phones going wrong at first and as soon as some one found an exploit Samsung had it removed and safe root went right out the window.
I have learned to like stock and I'm ok with it. And my phone works all the time.

Totally agree!
+2!!!!!
I personally have had no problems with rooting my phone or with custom roms. The only time I had an issue was when I changed my boot splash. The first time I bricked my phone and had to use emergency recovery with Smart Switch. I am also going to suggest you try that before you return your phone. Make sure you backup you internal SD first though because Smart Switch will erase everything. I think it will fix your problem be cause the emergency recovery is started with your serial number. so I do believe it will fix your efs issue. It is definitely worth a try.
Future reference. TWRP does backup your EFS if you click the checkbox for it.
