Is an OFFICIAL dash/excalibur 6.1 ROM coming? - HTC Excalibur

Big props to kavana and others for their excellent work, but I'm always uneasy about installing unofficial/unintended ROMs. If I knew that an official 6.1 ROM was coming, say within the year, I might stick with 1.33 for now. Are there any rumors or rumblings at all about a possible release date? Or has it been confirmed NOT to be coming?

Even when T-Mobile comes out with an official ROM. I wont be upgrading to theirs. Maybe I'll upgrade, if HTC rolls one out.
I'm waiting for Googles OS, personally.

Be careful, especially if T-Mobile does not support SDHC cards. The US roms limit you to 2gb. The 1.33 rom allows at least 8gb (I use one).
I can not understand why T-Mobile US does not allow SDHC in their rom, when the actual OEM supplier of their phone supports SDHC with the Dash.
I would think it constrains their sales.

with respect the the SDHC and lack of support. and retro-support via new ROM. As far as marketing is concerned, if they release a new phone that supports SDHC and is more expensive than the DASH i would understand why they would choose not to retro-support SDHC for the dash since people won't be as apt to buy a new phone for the SDHC support if they already have a phone that already supports SDHC.....i don't like it, but i would understand their reasons

ALL ABOUT THE MONEY

I hope they do come out with the rom soon.
I would upgrade to the cooked roms now, but nobody seems to have dumped the 531.6 that my Dash currently has, in case I don't like the 6.1 rom I would like to go back to 531.6, but looks like I can't do it.

Are we getting Android on the S620? The pictures of a device running Android look more like an S640.
Back on topic: I will wait for someone to cook up something nice after the official drops.

this thread was started about an official 6.1 release, so we shouldn't get distracted with android.
I'm not sure why you would want a new unproven OS anyway. WM has zillions of applications and works quite nicely. I'll wait for 2 years after android is live before even considering it.
quite frankly I would like an official HTC 1.33 release, which doesn't seem to be around yet.

The Excalibur, although used much in practice isn't high on the support list i think. HTC will put its effeorts into the new devices and not the older ones ...
However I would also like to see an Official 6.1 ROM for it ...

Official release date
Apparently the official release date will be Apr 1.
http://www.pocket-lint.co.uk/news/news.phtml/13612/14636/windows-mobile-61-coming-april.phtml
Of course, that doesn't mean there will be an official update on that date or anytime near that date, but since the Dash is still a high profile T-Mobile phone, I'm going to guess it will be released soon.
Also, I had a quick conversation with some Windows mobile people at the MS booth during a recent event, they said to expect a release soon. (His words, 'don't worry, it's not going to be a September release, you'll see it much sooner')

Now that the dust had settled, does anyone know if we will ever get an official upgrade to 6.1 for the S620? It doesn't seem to appear in any of the official microsoft lists
(Thankfully cooked ROMs exist )

Official WM6 upgrade for TyTn is confirmed

The official HTC forum in Norway has confirmed that HTC will release an WM6 update for TyTn.
http://smartmobil.no/Article639.phtml
Sorry if this information is outdated
Its also on Qtek's swedish site that theres 5 HTC phones definitly getitng the official upgrade.. http://www.qtek.se/sweden/nyheter/senaste_nytt.aspx
I'm sure it has already been covered someplace else on the forums already mind.
Yea, i think it have been posted earlier today/this week. Says late summer, so im thinking july, august
well, this is great news.
let's hope the official update will have all problems fixed etc.
Cingular announced this a few weeks ago. Actually they confirmed WM6 for the 8525, blackjack AND treo 750. No release dates though, but engadget reported that the Blackjack update is probably going to be released the earliest.
official WM6
Hi
Its true that TyTn gone have an official WM6. But I’m not sure that they can delivery it in June or July because TyTn Europe couldn’t jet delivery a new Swedish MW5 Rom witch been known since months on xda-developers forum it was suppose to delivery in January 07. so I satisfying so long with current WM6 such as Black, LVSW etc.
regards
Yes, and the question is: witch one will be better? Or better suiteable...
I believe that the heroes here (we all are) investigated so much in this stuff that I will make this statement: HTC learn from XDA or you lose!!! Probably they've read all our treads and learnd from it.
Question: What do you think concerning this matter?
I think Cingular/HTC waits for the developers here to solve all the problems then they just copy and release what was done here Saves them time and money developing their own stuff. lol

Its true though... even if an offical release becomes available for my Vario II, I'm not totally sure that I would upgrade giving tha I'm so happy with my LVSW WM6 install
i have the same sentiments... the roms here are almost "made to order" with features that majority of us agree on. I really can't imagine upgrading to an official "operator" or "manufacturer" rom unless there's a big boo boo in the one's i've installed from here (which there have been none I might add).

I presonally prefer official ROMs over these user-made. WM6 roms I've tried do have more or less annoying bugs and unusefull software (xcept maybe for vanillas).
Original roms are (or at least should be) guaranteed to work on phones they have been made for.

Yes, advanced users here provide very much, but not that many actually developes the OS itself. They just add tweaks
and some freeware programs in it.
Oh and believe me, there are more gurus out there as well. This is just a forum with few experts and I doubt they
do this for a living, more like a hobby.
For free? How many times you have paid for a rom that operator releases?
And WM6 for free? I'd say that's piracy. You do pay for at least to upgrade from Windows XP to Vista?
When you buy a new computer that comes with an OS, you can't assume that you are entitled for a free upgrade
to OS when ever one is released.
I find the best thing this forum has to offer is free problem solving when it comes to bricking your device when
you either don't have a clue what you are doing or then something goes wrong while flashing your phone.
Hats off for the expert for that.

It is quite different thing for several reasons:
1. You can't go and buy an OS for a PocketPC or smartphone. Moreover, there is no and can't be a market for OSes for such devices: any build is device dependent. Show me that shop, and I'll buy Symbian or Linux for my TyTN!
2. When you buy a motherboard, you expect free BIOS update, especially if the original is buggy. For embedded devices (STB, modem, router, MP3 player etc) you do expect free firmware update, especially if the original one is buggy. No matter that the firmware is based on a Linux or even no OS. Windows Mobile is just a part of the firmware for our devices.
And, because Windows Mobile is always buggy, we do expect free updates!
Yes, you get free updates for BIOS as you do get for your phone. They are called ROM updates, which include fixes for radio, bootloader, OS fixes and stuff, but NOT a new OS.
As I see it, when a new OS has been released, it will be sold as a part of a new phone (OEM). As you can't purchase OEM versions you are stuck with the one you currently own, but you still do get free updates.
I would find it quite strange if you would be supported with brand new OS for no additional cost, since I believe the operators/manufacturers sure has to pay license fees for
new OS's.

Don't be so restricted, look wider!
Manufacturers get money from selling their devices. If they won't update the OS on just released models (and TyTN is far from EOL), they loose sales. Then they can give the same ROM to us, old owners, for no cost for them.
Then, they just announced new models on almost the same hardware. They have to use the new OS on them, so they have to make the new ROM for them. But if they won't update our ROMs with the new OS, they'd have to continue supporting two different lines of ROMs, instead of one with small very specific changes. It's additional cost. Or, drop support for recent devices, means loose their face and then sales of new devices.
Believe me, it's not free, and not for no cost from us. We paid enough to let them support us until EOL, and they earn enough from such upgrades.
Just like owners of other devices paid for all the firmware updates, we paid for our updates. The early we purchased the more we paid, BTW. An update with the new OS for recent devices for HTC is cheaper than no updates or updates with old OS. Even if the update would be less stable/useful than WM5 AKU3.5!

If Microsoft provides the upgrade to the OEM for free (which it looks like they are doing for WM6) and the OEM provides the upgrade to current owners for free (which it looks like they will do when they eventually do it), then it is not piracy.
Keep in mind that Microsoft really makes its money on its core products (currently Vista, Office 2007 and Exchange 2007). They REALLY want users (especially enterprise users) to upgrade to those new products. If you have a Windows Mobile device, you need WM6 on those devices to take full advantage of the new features in the core products, so why wouldn't they give it away? It will pay for itself twice or three times over. Besides, as other users have pointed out, WM6 is really just a bug fix maintenance release for WM5.0!

Sure u all know but Windows Mobile 6.1 to be released on APRIL 1st

Windows Mobile 6.1 to be released on 1 April
(I Read Bink.nu daily so thats where I got the news from, Bink is truly the most credible MS news man in all of the Land)
Pocket-lint has learnt from sources close to the matter that Microsoft will announce the much-rumoured refresh to its mobile phone operating system, Windows Mobile, on 1 April 2008.
An improvement over Windows Mobile 6 released in February 2007 the new version, unsurprisingly named 6.1, will be a stop-gap measure to keep both consumers and industry happy until the launch of Windows Mobile 7.
Leaked screenshots of 6.1 have already done the rounds in the blogosphere, and show the system has been simplified with the screens displaying less mess than the Vista-inspired version 6.

Not to sound cynical but.........1 April.......
I am an ADMIN and I handle frontpage news at theHotfix.net so I do my research i have my sources and OBVIOUSLY I use other news sources, this seems legit, its NOT offical from MS, but a credible source from within MS says thats the date, I dunno, I posted it on my SITE
Hmm. So what do they know about the hard reset issue that nobody else does? April 1?

Considering how bad my HTC/AT&T experience has been, I may bail out before HTC makes WM6.1 available for the AT&T 8525.
It took them nine months to come out with WM6 for my device.

I find my official 6.0 adequate, I'm not even sure what I'd look for in a 6.1.

Anyone have any info on the projected release of the official T-Mobile(US) Windows Mobile 6.1 ROM available for download from their website?
Just out of curiosity, did you hear they were even planning on releasing an official 6.1 ROM for the DASH?

lol I got that same vibe from the customer care team! "We have no knowledge of a Windows Mobile 6.1". Like there's some sort of federal figure that'll come from the shadows and abduct them if they utter the words...
It probably depends on just how long tmo-usa is planning to keep selling the DASH. It's been around for a while and they had to put WM6.0 on it because it was still selling fairly well.
I know tmo isn't what it used to be when it comes to putting out hot, new phones and end-of-lifeing older ones, but it just wouldn't seem like a smooth business move for them to put out WM6.1 on such an old phone. After all, they want you to keep buying new ones at contract's end.
Still, it might take a single tmo developer about a day-and-a-half to take one of Kavana's or Ricky's ROMs and brand it for an upgrade

It's not as responsive as I see it in the youtube vids.
Seems to run flawlessly.
I notice a real slow down when I import contacts. I have quite a few.
and what is with the new versions of WM?
To the question : "WM6.5 or WM7 on diamond ?", the answer is "YEEES ! you will have WM6.1++ !!!"
I think it means we won't have them from HTC, as they probably reserve it for a brand new phone they'll try to sell us...
But XDA developpers are the bests, so i'm sure we can expect them to cook a nice WM7 Rom as soon as it will be available...
Let's hope WM7 will be able to run on our Diamonds. Can't wait till the release!
Not too sound too negative, but I mean WM6 kills the diamond - it makes it choke (cooked ROM's or not).
Hopefully that won't be the case for WM7. Because up to this point, I'm rooting Android all the way
This is pure speculation from all of us, since we're talking about an unreleased product. That said, Windows 7 beta seems a lot snappier than Vista (I know - doesn't say much) and slightly faster than XP. So, maybe WM7 will run faster than 6.1?
Some people have mentioned WM7, I highly doubt HTC will release 6.5 for the Diam/Raph/BlackS, never mind 7.
Good thing we have xda-devs, though I suspect that 7 will require new and diff. hardware in phones, such as multitouch.
how reliable is the news?
yea wm really sucks.. ms is really poor at innovation..
diamond doesnt have multi touch?
anyway been waiting for a new official rom for a damn long time.. was tempted to flash to a cooked rom.. so i guess can wait till jan for now to see what they offer..
Hopefully they resolve issues like memory leak.. and learn from the forums what the users really expect of the diamond and tf3d..
LOL when it be wm7 upgrade you ll have another **** phone from htc so what are you solving here i consider that due to ms is poor bastard* wm7 will be at 2010...just look to articles and news...

The guy interviewed is:
"Selskapets produktsjef for de nordiske og baltiske markedene, Christer Högström" ==> "HTC's Chief of Products for the nordic and baltic markets, Christer Högström"
So probably as reliable as it gets before the actual download is available.
Edit:
HTC actually got a bunch of questions regarding WM6.5 on current models, to sum up they're answers:
HTC will have to pay an upgrade license per device for 6.1 to 6.5, the details regarding this is not all worked out yet, so he couldn't answer if there would be released official 6.5 updates and if it would be free or a upgrade fee involved.
I suppose most/many of the hardcore users would be interested in upgrading if the fee vs gains is the right...
Don't hold your breath!
If HTC release an official 6.5 ROM upgrade for the Diamond, I will video myself eating my device and post it on YouTube for all to see! New OS means sales of NEW devices.... this makes good sense for businesses. Why offer an upgrade for a device someone has already bought when they can sell you a nice new device with the latest OS installed?
Thank goodness for XDA Developers, that's what I say! We will have our upgrade one way or another!

Making an upgrade available for some small fee wouldn't be that bad. Bussinesswise I understand your viewpoints but on the other hand, I buy my phone for 500EUR ($800 or something) I think for that price I can get some service. If I get bad service I wouldn't stay with HTC, but frequent updates will make me buy another one (or your operator will buy another one for you with ur contract), if that's 500EUR every 2 years I think they can be really happy.

Windows Mobile 6.5

Ive heard its out (officially) and ive been seeing themes and such for it. Should we be upgrading our TP2? I know were suppose to get a free upgrade from 6.1, but not sure how i would get that. Ive tried to update though Windows Update on my device, but it never can get a connection (weird)
Where have you heard it's officially released? Last I heard it was early next month.
There are leaked copies around and the chefs are cooking 6.5 ROMs. I'd expect the official (free) upgrade to go up on the HTC site some days / weeks after the official release, when the carriers will release their versions is down to them

6.5 is going to be released officially on October 6th. When the carriers release their own version, it will most definitely be after that date. Also, Microsoft has not once used Windows update for WM, and they won't use it to upgrade you from 6.1.

Windows Mobile 6.5 and Marketplace Available Oct 6
It's also been stated that HTC plans on releasing their update on that same date. Meaning that you can upgrade your unlocked/unbranded phone then. One of the advantages of not having waited for the local carriers to release their version. You don't have to wait for them to release their update either

Any links where HTC has mentioned it that they intend to release it on 6th oct for everyone? i am really looking forward for it
Anyone here have a 6.5 ROM that can compare differences with 6.1? I've used 6.5 briefly on a Tilt and I'm not really seeing the benefit besides the bigger icons. TouchFlo with 6.1 on my TP2 seems to be fine to me. 6.5 seems to be a little cumbersom. What's the real benefit of 6.5 anyway? I think I'll skip and wait for 7.
