i am watching my dad's cat this week while he is on vacation, last night i had my at&t 8525 on my lap while working on my laptop. the cat wanted to get on my lap and i said no. not wanting to give up he jumped one last time claws out. the cat jumped on the screen of the 8525 and cracked the screen. my dad refuses to help me out with the phone at all saying accidents happen. my question to you all is what should i do about the phone, replace, wait for 8925, chance a warnty exchange by saying its a power problem or pay the $200 or more to get the phone fixed at HTC?
second question, what to do with the cat?
You've broken only the digitizer or also the lcd?
If you don't know the way to answere to my question is:
can you see pictures on the screen but when you tap on it nothing happend or the phone does wat he want?
yes?
OK! you've broken the digitizer.. 25$ and then you have to change it with your hand.. it's not difficult but the first time it appear complicated and if you're interested i can post you the whole sequence (note: you've to solder a flex cable)
If you can't see anything on the screen or you see a large scratch like black ink you've to change the lcd+digitizer pack.. 100$ or someting less maybe (80$). The full pack (lcd+digi) is very easy to change, without solder or moving.. there is only srew and connector to open.
Let me know.
For the cat: have you got a car? do wat you have to do and then go to your dad with the corpse and say: "accidents happen"
Bye
replace lcd

What are you 9 years old still ? You're like a kid runnning to "mommy" saying... "mommy, I broke my toy... what do I do now ?!? will you buy me another one ?".
You have a broken phone. Your options are limited. Why are you asking us what to do ? Do you want us to make a decision for you ?!
Fine... Buy another 8525!

look the 8925 is comming out in a few days, and i dont have the money, but if i just had to buy another one i would go for that one, if i can fix it for cheap i want to do that. the reason my father is even involved is because its his cat, i would drown the thing but its not mine.
this is for the cat.
Dont know what to do about the phone, but here is something funny that you can try on the cat.
Instructions.
Get and empty can of favorite pop ( coke or pepsi )
Put in empty can 3, 4 or 5 little rocks or something that mekes noice when inside can. ( tape the can oppening if you want for lasting pleasure )
Get plastic bag, the ones you get when you buy your groceries.
Put the can with the small, rocks inside the groceries bag.
Grab cat and put each loop of the plastic bag on each of the rear legs of the cat. ( make shure the cat legs dont get untied from the loops of the bag for lasting pleasure )
Hope it helps, let mi know if it worked.
( by the way this is not going to harm the can in any way. but it will be super funny to see )
dude.. your phone looks bad... i agree with SegiRoPi's advice on what to do with the cat..
From what I have read, there's no hope for the phone or the cat! If U don't want to do the bag trick, then get it a pair of cement shoes and go to the nearest bridge...
FIX maybe

i found a site with instructions hot to take the phone apart, and i have a bid in for a new LCD and DIGITIZER. we will see what happens, its a hell of a lot cheaper thn HTC fixing it at 200+ then add tax.

lol, judging by those pictures...can you really expect people to believe the pressure of a cat did that, you had to have atleast jumped up freaking out, and the device hitting something hard caused that, come on now....
Step off, CD... I'd say a cat could certainly do that kind of damage by standing on it (mine could, anway).
That aside, I've replaced a screen and it can be done, although it's by no means for the faint of heart. It's pretty much a complete teardown to get to it.
Oh, and the LCD is definitely broken so forget about replacing the digitizer only (which I wouldn't advise anway unless you're really good with a soldering iron).
Is the cat still alive?
There are several places you can get a digitiser/screen kit (a quick search should find some links). You can download the HTC service manual and other useful info from Mike Channon's web site http://michael-channon.spaces.live.com/.
As for the cat, I think you know where to poke the broken parts
this is the second thread Ive read this morning which has some "smart arse" replys, I mean how constructive is

Agree with ratcom. Lay off the guy, he has had a bad enough day.
(this post too is a blatant attempt to increase my post count)
Get a new screen or pay to have it repaired. Considering it's your dad's cat and you were doing him a favor, he should at least pay some of it. That's what a responsible pet owner would do anyways.
As far as the cat, its hard to blame it as its just doing what your dad has let it do for however long he has had it. When a child has bad behavior, do you blame the child or the parent who has allowed the bad behavior over time?
Fixing the issue
i told you all in post nine how i was going to fix it, and the cat jumped with his claws out and hit the screen. i had a day to cool off and i found a way to fix it and its cheap. i gotta say thank you to the guy who said it could be done and peeked my intrest, and the guy who posted the link to the service manual.
the cat is unharmed, after all he is just a kitty, i will post a picture later in an edit
this is'nt the cat in question?

Lets be honest - who cares who's (what's) at fault - it's still a CAT - poke the broken glass up it's bum n tell it not to do it again...
shave it or snip one side of its whiskers shorter than the other.

Hi everybody.
2 weeks ago my MDA PRO has decided to get DIVING license and rendered itself completely useless. I have taken it to the t-mobile shop since I am still in guarantee period (well I did dry it with the hair dryer)
So t-mobile sent it off to their aftersales department and today they called me and sayd that they are declaring the device Total Loss and that it is not covered by the guarantee since they found evidence of liquid. Anyhow it does not help to argue with the lads there (especially if it is true)
But the reason I am writing this is: I am going to fetch it on monday(I meant the wrek) is there something I could do with it besides taking it apart and looking what's inside? Any suggestions are welcome
suggest it rained on the way to the shop, so that's when it got wet?
I had an ipod go like this a month or two back. Nothing I could do could get it going again, including leaving it in the airing cupboard by the hot water heater for a week.
That sucks! I took out insurance on my o2 EXEC out of fear of that.
they can see on the residu if it was clear water like rain, salt water or water from a pond.
when you have insurrance lose it or maybe they will steal it from you, thieves cant see if it is broken in advance....
good luck
No need! My insurance covers accidental damage.
insurance (maybe off topic)
Hi mates,
I was just wondering where you guys get the insurance from. I tried to find one and couldnt get any insurance.
Thank you
H
Ah, I'm with o2's Insurance Gold Monthly package, which I took out when I bought my Universal from them. (As an o2 XDA Executive)
mate easy peasy
ok,get ur pda then post it with postal insurance .post from your workplace to your home, you can say that you went on holiday from work and left your device and a work mate had to post it to your home as you were away
take a pic of it all of before hand and in tact viusaly(you can say he did this pic as the company has had probs in past with damages and its policy to take pics of all fragile goods prior)
when it arrives at home jump up and down in the bugger till its mashed or locate a pic of a mashed pda the exact same
then claim it was done during transit with your postal recipet and pic evidence
cant say i have done it and it works out fine
I'll add the Disclaimer:
JaceUK, his wholly- or partly-owned subsidiaries and affilliates take no responsability for anything that happens to your device while undergoing these procedures. Do NOT try this at home, I repeat: Do NOT try this at home.
No really, Don't.
OK guys...
I have gone today to pick up the wreck and tmobile has made me an offer I gould not resist. My subscription has another year to go till sept. 2007, so if would prolong my subscription for another year they in the same rate plan they were prepared to give me an MDA Vario for free. Of course I took the offer.
Then when I cam home and was setting up my MDA Vario and waiting for the sync to finish I opened my broken MDA-PRO which had a huge yeloow sticker on it saying that there is oxidation found indside and that this device is unrepeirable... What do you thing I hit the power button and the device woke up battery was low I loaded it and the device is still running. All my data was intact. Thank god it did not happen in the store...
Anyhow I am going to see how long it works.... keep you posted
HAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!!
THAT is brilliant.
Now for goodness sakes insure them!
I know isn't it?
I was with a friend who actually was the first one to notice that the device works in the store and he was shouting: "It Works, It Works" I almost shot him... Luckily the clerk was bussy with something else and did not hear
But it is absolutely Brilliant
Oh And I have also an official Letter from T-Mobiel that states that my device is a total loss and is beyond repair

LOL...Lucky you, My friend also had a MDA Vario that fell in a puddle and he dried it out and the next day it started working again. Guess there is hope hahaha
OK..
The device is working and I think I am going to keep the big yellow sticker saying that there is OXIDATION found in the device and that it is unrepeairable LOL
Anyhow the battery is screwed up, it depleetes too fast. After a 1 minute long phonecall to my voicemail I am down from 90% to 60% so this can not be good.
ANYBODY who's Universal died and they can not revive it PLEASE let me have your battery....
if you think it's worth it, but yourself a new exec battery, can't be that expensive. So which one are you going to carry around now? The more powerful but semi-reliable Pro or the mediocre Vario? >:>

That oxidation sticker could mean they saw some corrosion on a power regulator or somesuch which is shorting and killing your battery. I wouldn't use it further, I'd open it and scrub the board with an old toothbrush and some IPA.
This problem is more than your battery IMO but it's cheap enough to buy another to test it out.Lend you battery to another universal owner if you know one and see if it flattens so quickly in their device.

I got a good luagh from that one. LMAO. "jump up and down in the bugger till its mashed" And that was the best part. Poor lil bugger!!!
Well the battery depleetes too fast and the device would not sync on any PC (I have tried 5). So I have opened the device and saw the OXIDATION myself, just like fluffcat1 suggested with a dry tooth brush I have cleaned the whole thing and put it back together, and now everything is perfect, although the battery still depletes too fast.
Since I am between jobs now I am not going to spend money on a battery but simply use the device as a navigation system. I got the Brodit holder and all. So this is going to be a great navigation, large screen...
Already installed the latest AKU 3.2 ROM and installed TT5 with ! GB SD card completely full wit the maps of most of the wester Europe. From now on I am going to keep the thing in the car so my wife does not have to complain about the small screen of the TT5 on her Nokia 6680. Sounds like a perfect situation.
I still have the MDA Vario (which I aplanning to give to my little brother) and the QTEK 8500. Plus in the end of september I can prolong my subscription and get myself the long awaited TyTn or MDA Vario II (does anyone know when will it be available from T-Mobile Netherlands?
OK I have a T-Mobile Dash with Kavana's WM 6.1 and it *was* working just fine. I flashed the ROM about a week ago, installed SmartToolkit, and it's been running fine for a few days.
Today, out of the friggin blue, I now have a bunch of white lines on my display. They start at the very top of the screen, and fill up a little more than 1/3 of the screen. Each line is 1px thick, and it skips every other line.
I did a screen capture, but it didn't pick the problem up (the captured screen looked great), so I photoshopped the screen shot to show you folks EXACTLY what it looks like on my phone.
This morning, it was fine. I made some calls, sent some emails, and it was working fine. Just about 20 minutes ago, I noticed this problem. I have NOT adjusted any settings, added new software, dropped it, submersed it, or modified it in ANY way. I didn't power cycle it, plug it in, or do anything more than let it sit on my desk next to me.
After I noticed the problem, I reset it, and it was there. I took the battery out, let it sit for a few minutes, rebooted it, and it was still there. The lines DID appear in the windows splash screen as well as the HTC boot logo (the boot logo is not pure white, more like a light grey, so if you angle the phone down a little to darken the grey, you can see the white lines)
These lines appear above ALL screens, including running programs, system menus and messages, and even when shutting down. It does NOT, however, seem to affect the phone's performance, so I can live with it for a few more hours until I see some replies here.
Unless this something that is easily remedied, I figure these should be my next few steps (unless a guru tells me otherwise):
- Soft reset (tried, not solved)
- Soft reset including battery removal (tried, not solved)
- Re-flash ROM with Kavana's 6.1
- Re-flash ROM with T-Mobile factory install (link, anyone?)
- Call T-Mobile for device replacement.
That's my battle plan for now... any thoughts, anyone? Thanks in advance for your help.
Attached picture in my first post updated... I used photoshop to make it look *exactly* like the actual screen. That's the best I could do without actually taking a picture of the phone itself. :\
"Bump" <-- Sorry... don't know if that's against the rules here, but at this point I'm ripping the hair out of my head. Can someone please help?
I had the same problem except it was with i screen I purchased on ebay. It looked exactly the same as yours right after i installed it. It seems the screen was defective. I couldn't fix it so I got the vendor to replace my screen and the new one worked like a charm. So you may, unfortunately need to purchase a new screen.
Like hell I will... the damn thing is less than a month old!!!!!!!! T-Mobile will buy a new screen! LOL
Hey, thanks a lot, I really appreciate that!!
for sure. I wouldn't void my warranty either. Unless someone else has another solution, I would just reflash the t-mobile rom and get replaced. That's a bummer man. Hopefully you get it worked out. Glad I could be of assistance.
Thanks again!
I'm on the phone with TMo right now, and I'm starting to get pissed. I originally signed into t-mo in October last year, so it's been what, 6 months? Since then I've done 3 warranty replacements with the Wing, then they did a "Multiple exchange" to the Dash (which I cant figure out, seeing as the Dash is cheaper) and now this, with a dash less than a month old.
I think I'm going to start a new topic about this so everyone can see what kind of run-around t-mobile is giving me.
Can you say that in plain english now.

I left Sprint for T-mobile in October of 2007 (last year), when I bought the Wing. Since then, I have had to replace it 3 times. Then, on the last warranty replacement (about a month ago) I asked for an alternate model. They sent me the Dash.
Better?

Dude, who put sand in your shorts??? How the HELL do you work out this is ME?? The phone was sitting on a DESK when this happened. It's never been dropped, submersed, abused, struck, anything...
Oh wait, that's right... When I asked T-Mobile about this and they said it's a KNOWN PROBLEM, I suppose that's my fault too, right?? I think you should do a little less talking, because you're a pretty ignorant and useless member that just likes to reply to posts with meaningless, unhelpful, rude messages.
You know, I love the way some people act on this board... (Don't get me wrong, most of you are excellent and helpful, and I'm grateful) But some of you just like to sit here and make absolutely no useful contributions... you just like to chastise people and act all superior without giving any real advice or help.
Ever think maybe people come here for help? If you can't ask for it, or you can't give it, then what are you doing here?
Both of you should mellow out. I adore my dash, but I'm on my third one, (my first refurb) and it has ...issues. My last one died in it's sleep in my pocket. It isn't exactly the toughest phone around, nor the most stable. I suspect the wing is even less reliable, as I researched one at length before choosing dash.
Of course, every time one bites the dust, I think, "is it me?" It isnt that unreasonable for someone else to wonder the same.
Peace love, and good luck with TMo. I've gotten a lot more help from them with sugar than I ever got from Sprint or Verizon with any approach. Don't loose your cool.
Even though I agree with your sentiments, I'm finding it a bit hard to mellow out.
However, I disagree with you on one thing: Yes, I think it really is THAT unreasonable for someone to wonder if the problem is me.. One of the Wings TMobile sent me wouldn't even power on, right out of the box... how the HELL is that my fault, and how the HELL is it natural for someone to think that it is?? What, did I open the box the wrong way, sending a static charge through the foam and frying the circuitry of the phone??
Furthermore, to assume that I'm the problem, when I've shown no signs of incompetence or admittances of dropping, submersions, etc. is not only unethical, it's also pretty insulting.
I know perfectly well how to care for electronic devices, and if I did accidentally drop or submerse a phone, I would be embarassed to try to blame T-Mobile for it.
No, I'm sorry, but it is 100% NOT my fault, and without PROOF it IS unfair and unreasonable for someone on this board to assume so. Certainly if T-Mobile thought it was my fault they wouldn't keep sending me phones, now would they?? No, I'm sorry, but I think people here that are that ignorant are simply posting because they have nothing better to post... and perhaps they just get off on ripping into other people. Perhaps they had their lunch stepped on a few times too many in high school. Maybe they weren't hugged enough. I don't know. All I know is they have no right to make assumptions about me. I didn't do that to them, so they should show me the same respect.

that's cool man, lol....but hey thanks for the link, I actually found the thread with the official latest RUU and just ran the exe.....thanks though!!!
Had the same problem on my phone. took it to an actual sprint repair center and they replaced the lcd.
First off, sorry, I know this is a dying thread buuuut instead of starting a new one I was wondering;
If you haven't taken your phone in could you post a pic, as best you could, of the burn? I thought this was an issue with my screen as well, but when I took my phone in to the Service Repair Center to have this random reboot issue looked at I brought this up. Guy said it was from pressing too hard on the screen .... now I know I've seen LCD monitors that have had this issue, the result of someone smashing their finger into the screen and it sort of looked like this, but I'm positive this isn't the case.
I've seen pictures of others and it looks like mine, so that's what I thought it must be. Guy basically said, with all confidence, that that was the issue. Then he proceeded to tell me to not put the phone in my back pocket and sit on it. Well, no ****. Unless someone sat on my lap and did this, which is unlikely as I would have instantly removed the phone (also the spot probably would have been bigger) so I'm sure that isn't the case. But I couldn't really argue with the guy seeing as to them, the customers never know what they're talking about.
So I guess, long story short guy said he couldn't replicate my reboot issue and said a new battery would fix it. Suffice to say, that wasn't the case and I was able to replicate the issue in 3 minutes once I charged the new battery up. But; could a picture be posted? I've seen pics, now I'm searching and I'm not finding anything .... here and over the interwebs.
If this thread dies, that's fine, am pretty much at the point I'm just going to go through insurance anyways to avoid any run around.
Thanks if ya can, and if not, no big deal.

sure I'll try and post a picture later.....now on mine it's more noticable on a white screen but it can still be seen on darker screens.....it looks like 2 more may be popping up as well.....I may get **** for this, but I have the best buy insurance and I just took it up to them and they are going to send it in for repair or may junk it out for a new one (im waiting to be called back until they have a loaner phone)
Cool man, yeah I too really only notice it on white / lighter screens. Like I said I guess it could be from pressure but another pic I had seen looked similar so that's why I think that's the case, even though he sounded pretty sure. And I wouldn't sit on my phone lol I baby my electronics to the point of it being almost ridiculous. Thanks for the response.

see, I was planing to sell my MT3GS, but I had to get down from a 3 meter high sealing for a show, and when I was practicing how to get up there fast I forgot to get the phone out of my pocket, so I got up there, and when I sat down, it fell to the floor (I was sitting in a really thing place).
Luckily, the floor was wooden, and the screen didn't break, actually it works (and slides) perfectly well.
BUT the problem is that now the screen (the part you slide so you can use the keyboard) is kinda separated from the keyboard, I can press and it goes back to it's place, but as soon as I stop pressing down, it separates again.. I was wondering how can I fix this, and if a simple disassembly (and re-assembly) would fix this.
omg, I really wanna fix it, this phone is REALLY special for me!! (I bought it on my first trip w/ friends to the US)..

Its easiest to have HTC fix it, or just get it replaced.
get it replaced?
that will work if you like the SLIDE, but if you want THAT PARTICULAR phone, try to get it fixed with HTC

how much would I have to pay for it? And how can I contact them? (SORRY, for being such a dummy, and thank you for wasting your time helping me)
$90 (USD) for full replacement, so i guess it would be less for fix

I've looked up in htc.com but I can't find a section to ask them for the replacemnt.. where do I do it?
SCIENCE!!!
Nah, it froze up after user "t" on voxer added me as a friend(most likely a fake hacker account). After pulling the battery it locks up on the HTC boot screen. when booted into recovery it seems the system and cache partitions will no longer mount. Verizon let me upgrade(as i was out of insurance replacements) early to a rezound(which appears to be following a similar S-OFF situation-whiny impatient do-nothings crying foul over the wait and then of course the wait itself)
anywho im willing to give it to anyone interested in research and development. you just have to pay shipping(if its even worth it lol). If no one wants its just gonna get chucked.
BTW-off topic but whilst i wait for my rezound to come in the mail a friends letting me use a motorola photon on his sprint account and that phone sucks. the camera button sticks(its like 2 weeks old)and it freezes every so often.
You can probably still save it. Do you have adb set up?
yeah but everytime i try to flash a new recovery or anything at all for that matter(including trying NANDROID restores)it freezes and i get a failed message in adb and fastboot. something along the line of "to many reads" or something.
Did you try unrooting?
well its on GB(Virtuous Affinity), and from what ive read it has to be on froyo to unroot, and without being able to flash anything i kind of...cant
after reading this-http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1393538
it would seem it wasnt a hacker, but the tiniest drop of coka cola that fell on the front speaker grill, the voxer user thing could have just been a coincidance as this guys phone seems to be doing the exact same thing.
http://forums.androidcentral.com/incredible-2-rooting-roms-hacks/120950-guide-unroot-revolutionary-incredible-2-a.html
so.. how much for shipping??
I don't think i can save it but i hate to see if just thrown away
yep, even flashing using the pg32img method causes it to freeze, but ive editted my last post right at the same time you posted this so im fairly sure its useless to everyone now, but if someone wants a fancy paperweight its still up for grabs
and andy-shouldnt be much- it weighs almost nothing and with USPS flat rate shipping boxes maybe like 10$, ill take it by the ups store tomorrow when i go to pick up a case for my rezound(theyre right next to each other).
theres one thing im not-nostalgic except for the inc1 which was a soldier. it brought a tear to my eye when i found it dead.but for saving it, if it is a moisture problem, here in Birmingham(al not UK) we have smart hpone repair places all over the place, the only reason i didnt take it to one of those is verizon went way out of their way to ensure i wouldnt switch to sprint(which i threatened to do)

yeah that why im thinking it was that tiny drop of coke that slid down the side of the can a drip right into the front speaker grill(note to self-dont leave the phone in your lap whilst drinking something)tried to blow it out, but probably just blew it further in.
edit:because it was only a drop and not much you can have it for your fiance, then take it to a smart phone repair shop. I dont know what the prices are around you, but here its only like 95$ to clean it out(if the screen has moisture damage they replace it for a hell of alot more, but this ones fine), being that its probably that drop causing a small short. If your wary id be happy to send some pics.

That's one powerful drip.
yeah, you know lol, like when your drinking from the can and the slightest bit slips by and gets all over your nice white shirt-well it landed like bullseye on the speaker.-its either that or the hacker theory cause they both happened right before the phone went nuts

I bet it was that Carnivore got into your phone and devoured itself from within the motherboard...
