OK I have a T-Mobile Dash with Kavana's WM 6.1 and it *was* working just fine. I flashed the ROM about a week ago, installed SmartToolkit, and it's been running fine for a few days.
Today, out of the friggin blue, I now have a bunch of white lines on my display. They start at the very top of the screen, and fill up a little more than 1/3 of the screen. Each line is 1px thick, and it skips every other line.
I did a screen capture, but it didn't pick the problem up (the captured screen looked great), so I photoshopped the screen shot to show you folks EXACTLY what it looks like on my phone.
This morning, it was fine. I made some calls, sent some emails, and it was working fine. Just about 20 minutes ago, I noticed this problem. I have NOT adjusted any settings, added new software, dropped it, submersed it, or modified it in ANY way. I didn't power cycle it, plug it in, or do anything more than let it sit on my desk next to me.
After I noticed the problem, I reset it, and it was there. I took the battery out, let it sit for a few minutes, rebooted it, and it was still there. The lines DID appear in the windows splash screen as well as the HTC boot logo (the boot logo is not pure white, more like a light grey, so if you angle the phone down a little to darken the grey, you can see the white lines)
These lines appear above ALL screens, including running programs, system menus and messages, and even when shutting down. It does NOT, however, seem to affect the phone's performance, so I can live with it for a few more hours until I see some replies here.
Unless this something that is easily remedied, I figure these should be my next few steps (unless a guru tells me otherwise):
- Soft reset (tried, not solved)
- Soft reset including battery removal (tried, not solved)
- Re-flash ROM with Kavana's 6.1
- Re-flash ROM with T-Mobile factory install (link, anyone?)
- Call T-Mobile for device replacement.
That's my battle plan for now... any thoughts, anyone? Thanks in advance for your help.
Attached picture in my first post updated... I used photoshop to make it look *exactly* like the actual screen. That's the best I could do without actually taking a picture of the phone itself. :\
"Bump" <-- Sorry... don't know if that's against the rules here, but at this point I'm ripping the hair out of my head. Can someone please help?
I had the same problem except it was with i screen I purchased on ebay. It looked exactly the same as yours right after i installed it. It seems the screen was defective. I couldn't fix it so I got the vendor to replace my screen and the new one worked like a charm. So you may, unfortunately need to purchase a new screen.
Like hell I will... the damn thing is less than a month old!!!!!!!! T-Mobile will buy a new screen! LOL
Hey, thanks a lot, I really appreciate that!!
for sure. I wouldn't void my warranty either. Unless someone else has another solution, I would just reflash the t-mobile rom and get replaced. That's a bummer man. Hopefully you get it worked out. Glad I could be of assistance.
Thanks again!
I'm on the phone with TMo right now, and I'm starting to get pissed. I originally signed into t-mo in October last year, so it's been what, 6 months? Since then I've done 3 warranty replacements with the Wing, then they did a "Multiple exchange" to the Dash (which I cant figure out, seeing as the Dash is cheaper) and now this, with a dash less than a month old.
I think I'm going to start a new topic about this so everyone can see what kind of run-around t-mobile is giving me.
Can you say that in plain english now.

I left Sprint for T-mobile in October of 2007 (last year), when I bought the Wing. Since then, I have had to replace it 3 times. Then, on the last warranty replacement (about a month ago) I asked for an alternate model. They sent me the Dash.
Better?

Dude, who put sand in your shorts??? How the HELL do you work out this is ME?? The phone was sitting on a DESK when this happened. It's never been dropped, submersed, abused, struck, anything...
Oh wait, that's right... When I asked T-Mobile about this and they said it's a KNOWN PROBLEM, I suppose that's my fault too, right?? I think you should do a little less talking, because you're a pretty ignorant and useless member that just likes to reply to posts with meaningless, unhelpful, rude messages.
You know, I love the way some people act on this board... (Don't get me wrong, most of you are excellent and helpful, and I'm grateful) But some of you just like to sit here and make absolutely no useful contributions... you just like to chastise people and act all superior without giving any real advice or help.
Ever think maybe people come here for help? If you can't ask for it, or you can't give it, then what are you doing here?
Both of you should mellow out. I adore my dash, but I'm on my third one, (my first refurb) and it has ...issues. My last one died in it's sleep in my pocket. It isn't exactly the toughest phone around, nor the most stable. I suspect the wing is even less reliable, as I researched one at length before choosing dash.
Of course, every time one bites the dust, I think, "is it me?" It isnt that unreasonable for someone else to wonder the same.
Peace love, and good luck with TMo. I've gotten a lot more help from them with sugar than I ever got from Sprint or Verizon with any approach. Don't loose your cool.
Even though I agree with your sentiments, I'm finding it a bit hard to mellow out.
However, I disagree with you on one thing: Yes, I think it really is THAT unreasonable for someone to wonder if the problem is me.. One of the Wings TMobile sent me wouldn't even power on, right out of the box... how the HELL is that my fault, and how the HELL is it natural for someone to think that it is?? What, did I open the box the wrong way, sending a static charge through the foam and frying the circuitry of the phone??
Furthermore, to assume that I'm the problem, when I've shown no signs of incompetence or admittances of dropping, submersions, etc. is not only unethical, it's also pretty insulting.
I know perfectly well how to care for electronic devices, and if I did accidentally drop or submerse a phone, I would be embarassed to try to blame T-Mobile for it.
No, I'm sorry, but it is 100% NOT my fault, and without PROOF it IS unfair and unreasonable for someone on this board to assume so. Certainly if T-Mobile thought it was my fault they wouldn't keep sending me phones, now would they?? No, I'm sorry, but I think people here that are that ignorant are simply posting because they have nothing better to post... and perhaps they just get off on ripping into other people. Perhaps they had their lunch stepped on a few times too many in high school. Maybe they weren't hugged enough. I don't know. All I know is they have no right to make assumptions about me. I didn't do that to them, so they should show me the same respect.

that's cool man, lol....but hey thanks for the link, I actually found the thread with the official latest RUU and just ran the exe.....thanks though!!!
Had the same problem on my phone. took it to an actual sprint repair center and they replaced the lcd.
First off, sorry, I know this is a dying thread buuuut instead of starting a new one I was wondering;
If you haven't taken your phone in could you post a pic, as best you could, of the burn? I thought this was an issue with my screen as well, but when I took my phone in to the Service Repair Center to have this random reboot issue looked at I brought this up. Guy said it was from pressing too hard on the screen .... now I know I've seen LCD monitors that have had this issue, the result of someone smashing their finger into the screen and it sort of looked like this, but I'm positive this isn't the case.
I've seen pictures of others and it looks like mine, so that's what I thought it must be. Guy basically said, with all confidence, that that was the issue. Then he proceeded to tell me to not put the phone in my back pocket and sit on it. Well, no ****. Unless someone sat on my lap and did this, which is unlikely as I would have instantly removed the phone (also the spot probably would have been bigger) so I'm sure that isn't the case. But I couldn't really argue with the guy seeing as to them, the customers never know what they're talking about.
So I guess, long story short guy said he couldn't replicate my reboot issue and said a new battery would fix it. Suffice to say, that wasn't the case and I was able to replicate the issue in 3 minutes once I charged the new battery up. But; could a picture be posted? I've seen pics, now I'm searching and I'm not finding anything .... here and over the interwebs.
If this thread dies, that's fine, am pretty much at the point I'm just going to go through insurance anyways to avoid any run around.
Thanks if ya can, and if not, no big deal.

sure I'll try and post a picture later.....now on mine it's more noticable on a white screen but it can still be seen on darker screens.....it looks like 2 more may be popping up as well.....I may get **** for this, but I have the best buy insurance and I just took it up to them and they are going to send it in for repair or may junk it out for a new one (im waiting to be called back until they have a loaner phone)
Cool man, yeah I too really only notice it on white / lighter screens. Like I said I guess it could be from pressure but another pic I had seen looked similar so that's why I think that's the case, even though he sounded pretty sure. And I wouldn't sit on my phone lol I baby my electronics to the point of it being almost ridiculous. Thanks for the response.
Sent from my PC36100 using XDA App
I bought my TouchPro2 through Mobile Phones Direct.co.uk, back in June '09. Just recently it started giving me problems with the ExtUSB. Have to fiddle with it just to make it take a charge, and I've given up trying to get to to connect to PC via USB.
Today it has got to the point where sliding the screen up or down too fast turns the phone off. Then I have to press power button to turn it on again.
I understand HTC supply a 24 month warranty. At least that's what my warranty card leaflet says. I already check the water indicators on the bottom of battery and next to MicroSD slot, they are both good (white with red crosshatchings.)
I have two concerns thought.
1) Is there a way for me to confirm that the Rom/SPL etc that I am using are the official ones that won't validate my warranty. I am pretty sure I never did any modding to this phone, only to my old Kaiser. But to be sure I would like to double check. ANy advice on how to do this?
2) My major worry is that my phone has loads of scratches on the screen, on the corners where paint is chipped. The battery cover is in a bad way too, the top left corner has a small crack and the metal strip in the middle of it has broken off around the camera lens.
So I am worried that HTC will tell me that whatever my problems are are because of normal wear and tear and therefore wont fix my phone. The thing is though all these problems are merely aesthetic which is why they never bothered me too much (at least once the first scratch is out the way anyway). My phone worked fine for ages despite these superficial defects (I never used a screen protector or case, phone used to go in my pocket along with coins, keys etc., and of course it did sustain the occasional drop).
Can anyone advise me as to whether this will be a problem? If HTC refused to fix/replace it then I would rather not send it in, to avoid the fee for returning it.
P.S. Also I don't know if I still have the paper invoice to prove purchase, will the emailed invoice be proof of purchase if I can't find the paper copy?
Oh yeh and finally, I don't have any insurance, so I am completely dependent on this warranty being honoured.l
I returned my Pro2 to the UK centre earlier this year. They don't need proof of purchase believe it or not, they never asked me once for mine, however, the electronic one will be fine as say you bought it on eBay, you wouldn't have a paper copy necessarily.
Also, I was using using a different stylus, had many programs like HD Walls and REStart and so on packed in there. Changed the home screen, even edited the files in the Windows directory that mailla used, altering them to say "Kev's Messages" and so on, and they never said a thing to me. My reason for returning is that the hard keys weren't working, they repaired it and flashed a new ROM on it and they never once had an issue with the "state" (if you will) that my Pro2 was in. Also I had many scratches on the battery pack and so on so I think you'll be fine! I hope this helps!
Thanks for your reply, salemfox. I'm going to give HTC a call tomorrow to arrange for them to collect the device.
In the mean time if anyone has any other advice than please let me know before I arrange for it to be sent in tomorrow.
How did it turn out?
not good,
arguing on phone to some dude now.
they originally sent me email saying device wasnt in warranty choose 1 of 3 options
1) pay 160ish £ to repair device
2) pay 20 to have device returned to me
3) allow htc to dispose of device
obviously didnt want to choose any of the 3 options, so i rang htc. spoke to someone who repeated options to me, saying if i did nothing then my device would be disposed of. I said i want to escalate matter, he told me theres no point, they'll tell me the same thing. I said i want to escalate anwyay, he told me to fill out service escalation form from htc website. found this at http://www.htc.com/uk/serviceescalation.aspx (even though its not linked to, anywhere in uk htc site)
filled that out on 6/10/10. never got any reply or anything. last friday 22/10/10 i got another email asking which option of the 3 i wanted to choose. rang htc back, told em how come no ones replied to my service escalation form, first person told me that the guy i originally spoke to (6/10/10) WAS the guy who escalated the issue, i was like WTF?? she said hang on, passed me to someone else, who said it had been escalated , i just didnt get the reply, but that he had in writing from the people who the matter was escalated to, that phone wont be fixed under warranty, i started complainign, saying i filled out the escalation form because i wanted to speak to someone who was higher up, and that i gave my contact details so i expected a reply FROM THEM. He then said he'd let me speak to his superior, which i did, and that guy repeated the same, first saying what form did i fill out, calaiming theres only customer care form on the website, but i told him original guy i spoke to told me to fill out the service escalation form, which i found (only by googling and guessing url).
I told him check the phone convo which should have been recorded, and he would see that i was advised to fill out SERVICE ESCALATION form from HTC website, which i did. he said he will check photos to see if the visual damage is minor enough that they will continue to repair anyway, (i doubt it , coz it had one pretty deep scratch in the screen, and back battery cover was cracked in corner). He also said he'll get original guy who i told me to fill out esclation form to call me back tomorrow.
I think theyre lying, noone seems to have done anythign about my escalation form. They say that the matter was escalated and that they have it back, in writing, that phone is not under warranty, but then why didnt anyone tell me anyof this, i wasn't contacted despite leaving contact info in contact fields of escalation form.
GRRRR, i knew this would happen, any excuse to get out of fixing the damn thing, i keep saying that im not bothered about the aesthetic damage (scratched screen, small crack in battery cover) since my phone worked fine for ages WITH these problems. i want them to fix the fact that my phones extUSB connector has gone dodgy, and that phones turns off, when i slide it open.
Not had phone for ages now, using old kaiser, but the touch screen doesnt work on this.
so bascally they are ssaying that due to visual damage (scratch, crack) phone isnt in warranty. I keep saying thats not whats caused problem, so just fix problem then. they say they can't half fix phone. so i say then fix the whole thing, but dont ask me to pay for it.
I mean seriously though, i've had the phone for almost 2 years, ofcourse theirs gonna be scratches and stuff, how can they say that puts my phone out of warranty!! (((
I'll keep u guys posted. sorry for poor grammar etc.
Could tell you woes a plenty,
email me at j-r at watchet.net and I can give direct names and contacts for escalation at HTC UK. When you get the right man, not too bad but not in call centre!
BEWARE unless guaranteed in writing they will flash the device with the latest win 6.5 rom and you will lose everything.
Even if they agree not to touch it, still often hard reset!
I'm fighting them for a LOT of compensation - for time, ignoring written instructions and £80 of telephone calls. Wil sue them if don't get anywhere this week.

None of those things violate the warranty. Just hard resetting clears all of those. HardSPL and flashing a custom ROM violate the warranty.

I have noticed I had the same issue with the original Tilt, and not I am having it with the Tilt 2 (TP2). After long-term use, over time the two halves no longer close flush (slides a tad further than it should), suggesting there might be something bending or stretching everytime you close it. It closes pretty hard so there is a good chance for wear but I haven't been able to figure out yet by tinkering with it what could be a solution.
Has anyone noticed this or figured out a solution? I know it's just a simple cosmetic issue and doesn't kill the phone but for some reason it caught my attention and has become an obsession to know more

I had the same issue. Return it for a warranty exchange. Read my post HERE about my experience. I use T-Mobile, so I wouldn't expect you to have the same level of customer service from AT&T. I'm not trying to be rude there. I've had them before, and there is no comparison between T-Mobile's customer service and AT&T's.
Keep in mind that you do have a warranty on the device for one year from the time of ORIGINAL purchase. If you get the phone second-hand from ebay, you still have a warranty that continues from the original time that person purchased the device. For example:
Frank buys a TP2 in May from AT&T. Frank sells the TP2 to you in August. You now own the device and continue on his warranty, which is now your warranty, until it expires in May of the following year.
I hope this was helpful.

This is true but Idk if it's worth sending back and getting a whole new phone. Eventually the new one will start to do it too. Plus, it's a sign of simple wear-n-tear so I don't think that's covered under the warranty. I was just wondering if anyone else ran into it and discovered a tweak to align it back up. It works perfectly fine, it's just a small blemish and it triggered my interests

Once again, I can't speak for AT&T, but T-Mobile considers it a physical defect in the device and completely covers it. There isn't really a way to realign it simply. I couldn't isolate the exact cause after pulling mine apart. It could either be the rails, slides, or rivets holding it together. I figured it was free to send it back, but around $40 for a replacement defective device to use for parts. There are no "parts" to be had for this device. You pretty much have to purchase someone else's dead phone to scrap.
It may be something as easy as removing a screw or two and bending something slightly and putting it back together though. I really don't think my issue is an issue of replacing parts more than it is adjusting something. I think that opening the phone so many times bends or places force on something. Finding out what that something is will determine if it will cost, be an easy fix, or have to send it back.
Just to give you a brief rundown of everything that's happened..
I'm 17 and saved up for a few months to buy a HTC One X. Needless to say, it's probably the most expensive phone i've ever owned, since all my other phones were hand-me-downs and old phones from eBay.
This morning i wake up and go to work as usual. Just to find my phone's display won't switch on. As you can imagine, I'm tirelessly panicking and try the 3 button combo.. to no avail.
Using Fastboot to reboot didn't work either.
This phone turned into a brick overnight, and i have no idea what happened??
Just before i left for work, i did check my phone and it was working alright.. Then five minutes later, it won't display anything.
The thing is, I can't take it back to HTC either because this is my 5th replacement phone!
First one had black glue smudged on the LCD it's self,
Second one had the screen not glued down and wasn't aligned,
Third one didn't even have any glue applied and the case wasn't even attached properly,
Forth one had this problem where the screen's LCD would dilate if i touched it - even lightly,
and this one is my 5th, the antenna wasn't properly connected and now the screen doesn't work.
I've had terrible luck, and i don't know what i can do?
If you can give me any information to get me out of this, it would be much appreciated.
Although i still can receive text's and calls fine, it's just the display..
Since you’re unlocked and running a non-stock kernel and ROM, maybe some of the dev-ish folks can help you resuscitate it if it’s indeed a s/w problem.
If it’s a h/w problem, what to do depends on where you bought the phone and how old it is. If it’s within the remorse/DOA period maybe you can exchange it. It’ll be hard for whoever you bought it from to see you’ve unlocked it if nothing’s showing on the display.
If it’s outside of the exchange period you’ll have to send it in for repair. If you can’t bring it back to life to flash it back to stock you’ll have to throw yourself on the mercy of HTC Asia in getting it fixed unlocked. HTC's different repair centers seem to all have different policies related to warranty coverage for h/w faults on unlocked phones. If it is a dead display maybe you’ll get lucky.
You might want to put a note in with it telling your “I’m 17” story and how devastated you are something you’ve worked so hard for has failed. Repair techs are people too. Good luck.

I shook the device out of frustration.. and it started working for a few seconds.
What's going on here? Is it a faulty display/connection? Is there a way to possibly just send it to a nearby phone shop and get it fixed?
Sorry about all the questions, I'm shocked, happy, and devastated all at the same time.
Are HTC refusing then? That seems a bit off/ illegal... Surely under the faulty goods act (I assume the law isn't THAT different in Australia to UK) they have to take it back as it CAN'T be a year old and they can't prove the issue was caused by your mistreatment. It doesn't matter how many phones you've had... Also, where did you buy the phone from? I think you should be able to return it through the shop as THEY sold you the phone, not HTC... They are still under an obligation as they sold you the thing.
Plus, the 'I'm a 17 year old and saved up for ages thing' might work too! I'd try not to get too technical with the law if you go down this route though!
Best of luck sorting this out. It's within your rights to get a replacement (you bought the phone new, I assume?) so I'm sure this will eventually work out. Don't give up! You just need to speak/ write to the right person...

What rom were you on?
I remember my One X not charging at all while it was turned off completely although it showed Orange charging led.
It could be that you ran out of battery and phone not turning on. Due to no charging effect.
@Op,
Reading your story there's one thing that's crossing my mind.
Could it be possible the battery run dry during the night?
It sounds stupid but those things you forget easy when you're in a hurry or stressed.
I don't read anything in your post you tried to charge.

Yes. But not in every region (yet). Do a search. It's been disucssed. Also, it appears Samsung's going down the same path.

Aware of the discussion... Using the xda app and didn't pick up that the phone's been 'HTCdev'd (my fault for not reading properly - sorry, folks!). Still not sure HTC/ Samsung can legally 'sign your rights away' though. Still, not a discussion for here...
Hope you got the phone sorted anyway.

How or who fixed ur antenna problem, could be related if handset wasnt but back together properly.
I love this phone. It's sexy, fast, and did I say sexy? But I'm on my second one now. The first had five stuck pixels and the top was pealing off. This one has none of that, but the touch screen is bugged. If I touch the backspace key on the Google Keyboard, I'll hit P somehow then it will select something random on the screen. If I'm scrolling through the homescreen, an app will open out of nowhere. If I press the back button, it will register it as a slide all the way up the screen and open Google now. I don't know if this is software, but so far it looks like I'm going to have to get another M8. If that one has problems, I'm going to the S5, no matter how ugly and bloatware ridden it is. I can't believe I've gotten two lemons in a row.
On that note, does T-Mobile offer replacements 14 days after getting the replacement, or is it only 14 days after getting the original device? I unlocked the bootloader so I don't want to send it in to HTC.
Get that info from your carrier. Go within these 14 days to a tmobile shop or just call them.

I realize that, I was just seeing if somebody may have had a similar experience, and hoping this was a bug I'm experiencing now, like how my old GNex couldn't detect corners of the screen.

I had the phantom in the keyboard after installing insert coin 2.10 but after updating to 2.3.2 its all good, now the only thing that pisses me off is the whelp message on firewater s off lol :good::good:
Sometimes it makes me happy to live in "technology backwards Australia" (relatively). A year and a bit ago, my 1 year old son thought my HTC ONE X would look better in a bucket of water, maybe he was trying to make a boat.. It had been around 6 months since I had it, I don't get "insurance", IMHO, a scam for most cases over here. Drying it out with silca + rice, I got it going again except it wouldn't read the SIM card. I took it in one of the local carrier shops (Vodafone), we're discussing the possible costs, and she sees my "very colourful" ViperROM, naturally no Vodafone look or apps (LOL).
The girl says it will be "a cost involved" if I want HTC to examine + repair and/or replace phone yada yada. Memory says she said it was $50 to get HTC to look at the phone to let me know if it was repairable etc.. So, I say thanks, go home, look for Vodafone RUU. Go back to stock, go to the other shop, I talk about the phone not working, playing dumb. The attendant guy says "Ok, let see what I can do for you". He goes to a cupboard, finds a refurbished HTC ONE X, and swaps it over on the spot.. Yay for people who don't "dig deeper", as all the phone stuff was less than a day old, that kinda looks suss, unless factory reset would make the files have similar timestamps etc..
But meh, I got a new phone replacement basically, well I didn't have the POGO pins working so my cheap ebay powered case wasn't worth getting extra time, but that was ok, ROM improvements plus my own 10plus hours a day helping out some ROM + kernel devs suss out the battery, we were getting a "pretty good" daily use per charge as opposed to the start, plus I owned 2 or 3 Nexus 7s by then... heh.
And it was somewhat mind blowing walking past the phone shops with the wife+ kids seeing the M8 on release day, no "fanfare" or trying to show off the M8 as a great flagship, it was on display next to an iPhone 4 and a Note (2 or 3).. And then the S5 on it's release did get the little bit of extra 'showing off', but overall, to most ignorant people (non insult), they were just other phones there, well besides how most people know someone or have had a galaxy themselves so therefore may be drawn to that.
And I spent a bit of time at the carrier shops recently as my wife (plus myself) were able to get a new phone, which my wife did, I mainly was inquiring about cheaper or better plans of similar cost since I was happy with my G2. I get a date personally that I have to wait to get a new plan as Vodafone want to intice people to get new phones so they can finish their plans earlier than 'just' getting out of contract to another sim plan.
True to Murphey's law, my G2 got hosed that night, HAHA. Had one 'big death' like that, did the stuff needed to reload the phone with a tot file etc, but the EFS partiton was truly hosed. Baseband, simcard, wifi was truly dead on stock JB, Kitkat and various custom roms I installed that night. Next day, M8 baby!
I got a perfect unit.
