Newbie looking for explanation ... - Upgrading, Modifying and Unlocking

I'm completely new to unlocking and flashing cooked ROMs on phones, though I've done similar things on other devices (nothing PDA-like though). And I'm confused about what unlocking does, vs. flashing a cooked ROM.
I understand that unlocking the SIM let's you use any carrier's SIM, and unlocking the CID allows you to flash any ROM -- I assume those settings aren't stored on the ROM then?
If I unlock a phone, then do the official upgrade to WM6, will it remain unlocked (still branded, but unlocked)? Can't the cooked ROM unlock the phone also?
This part probably belongs on a separate thread -- I get what the ExtROM is, but what's the Radio, etc.?
(PS: I looked at all the wiki's I could find on this site, and on several others, but all just described how to unlock or flash, not the workings of it. Maybe I'm blind though, so sorry if I missed a wiki!)

radio == gsm radio == whats makes the pda a pda phone

A quick explanation on the SIM / CID unlock:
It is correct that SIM unlocking lets you use SIM from any carrier, but CID unlocking does not let you flush "any ROM".
You still have to use a ROM designed for your device with the specific drivers in it or you will brick the thing.
CID lock prevents you from re-branding (i-mate Jamin and O2 Neo are same device but you can't use O2 ROM on i-mate device unless you CID unlock it) or changing OS language (through different language ROM).
Both SIM and CID lock values are located in a special part of memory where the phones IMEI also resides. This area is checksumed and is not affected by ROM changes.
So no, cooked ROM can not unlock the phone, you need to unlock first then flash a cooked ROM.

That helps a lot, thank you both!
A radio upgrade could potentially yield a better signal and faster speeds ... cooked ROMs offer the software aspect ... ExtROMs, again software; with the SIM/CID locks on separate memory inside the phone ...
Well, I think I'm ready to try to unlock the phone and load some nifty software on it ... got my fingers crossed I can get one "cheap" that is already unlocked, but they are, from what I'm seeing, usually $150 more than locked ones. I'd rather unlock it myself!

How to upgrade and install WM6 for Qtek 9100?
I am New to this software field. I want to know how to flash the rom and upgrade devices [K-jam,Jamin,Qtek 9100,Qtek 9000 ect...]

HTC Wizard - want to upgrade, q about device lock?

Hi All,
Got an ex-T-mobile MDA Vario coming via ebay to replace my HTC Typhoon.
I want to add the AKU2 and A2DP features to it and debrand it, so am thinking the Mr Clean ROM is the way to go.
Have spent ages going through these forums and I *think* I know what I'm doing but would appreciate some confirmation.
However, I'm not sure if I'm going to have the phone's device lock code (i.e. the PIN you put in to lock/unlock the phone via the security "Device Lock" menu - have asked the seller for this but if they're not sure then I don't want to test it as if I get it wrong the phone's a brick!). Does ROM flashing replace this, and if so, what's the default?
Also, are there any caveats with the ROM upgrade? Was going to check with Lokiwiz that it's unlocked (think it is already) and CID unlocked (is this the same as application locked on WM Smartphone?) and then run the Mr Clean ROMupdateutility_wizard_noid.exe - am I missing anything here?
Lastly, I'll be using it on Vodafone UK so I'm presuming all I need to do is manually set up the SMS/GPRS/MMS etc.
Can anyone give me some pointers?
Ric

Applying T-Mobile WM6 ROM to UNLOCKED Original HTC620

Hi Guys and Gals,
so spend all day surfing through this postings here and could not find a reliable way to put the T-Mobile WM6 update on to my Original unbranded and UNLOCKED HTC 620.
Found one post about using some patching including IMEACHECK as the passwod... but can use that as it talks about unlocking , which I dont need ... or do I...
Thnaks for all the help in advance as this will hopefully not only me, but also others seeking to do the same...
Cheers
Hi,
you can do the update in the exact way described here (you need the imeicheck unlocker and a unlock key for your mobile).

Thats the one I am refereing to it dont work... still said that i need another updater...
does any one else know how to get this done
Can you tell what's the steps you are taking and what's giving the error in details? I upgraded two units with the process and have no issues.
Keep in mind, unlocking the phone via imei-check or other sources is necessary, as you need to CID unlock the unit, which the unl file and dashv2unlock.exe does. My units were both SIM unlocked, but for the upgrade process you have to CID unlock it too, as you are using a ROM from a different provider. Also don't forget to patch the updater and nbh files, exactly as listed.

I did all mentioned including the patching of the files except the unlock part as my device came straight from HTC. Are u meaning that although this is direct from HTC that I still have to go through some unlocking steps ?
what is this unl file and the dashv2unlock.exe ????
Thanks
Yes, as I stated in my previous post, your device needs to be CID unlocked, and HTC devices are CID locked (SIM lock or in other words network provider lock is different, I know HTC devices are SIM unlocked).
CID locking will prevent you to apply different provider released ROMs. Simply go to http://www.imei-check.co.uk/dashunlock.php (or another Dash CID unlock provider), supply your IMEI, make the payment, and you'll receive access to two files:
dashv2unlock.exe - The application to run on PC to fully unlock the unit
yourimeinumber.unl - Unlock file generated by imei-check, specific to your unit's IMEI number
And follow the info to the point. It will work then. I used it on two Rogers HTC S621 units, both were SIM unlocked, CID locked.

Help: Several questions about unlock

Hi every one, my phone model is HTC Hermes 8525 locked to Att. Now it is in original box with Windows Mobile 5. I want to unlock it first. I have read articles on this BBS and aware that if I want to do future Rom flashing things I might need both SIM and CID unlocked. At same time I found several unlock code provider on Ebay.com. Now the questions come up.
1) Is Unlock code got via Ebay only for SIM unlock, or it is for both?
2) Is there any risk for such kind of unlock code for my phone? What's the worst outcome for using unlocker software downloaded here?
3) If I don't unlock my CID, can I still upgrade my phone with WM6? What specific ROM of WM6 shall I use?
4) Any other suggestion is welcomed, Ad's also.
Thanks a head

Hi and welcome to xda-developers forum!
1) I think this "unlock code" will provide you an ability to disable/re-enable SIM Lock/Operator Lock, not CID Lock (as it's platform specific and required to flash unofficial ROMs)
2) The worst is device will become brick. But it could occur only if you download and flash wrong ROM.
3) No, if it's unofficial. If HTC provided a WM6 update to Hermes (I don't remember), it could be flashed.
Good luck

What phone do you have?

a couple of noob questions. hope you guys can help

i had previously accidentally posted this in the xperia section but i meant for it to be here but
im getting my tilt 2 tommorow
i ordered it online from amazon contract free ($500)
so i have some questions
1. is it sim unlocked? or will i have to go get an unlock code from att
2. will it automatically add a data plan if i put in my att sim card onto it?
(if so is there a way to bypass this)
3. whats hte diffference between cid unlocking and sim unlocking. is there away to do both in 1 method
No, it isn't SIM unlocked.
No, it will not add a data plan to your AT&T account if you put the SIM in.
SIM unlock allows you to use other SIMs in your device. CID unlocking allows you to flash any signed HTC ROM (For example, you could flash a Vodafone or a TMobile USA ROM on your Tilt2). CID unlocking really isn't necessary for most people since most people use HardSPL, but you can SIM, Security, and CID unlock with this tool here. It costs money for most people, but it's really worth it since it does all three types of unlocks.
Since you are new to the HTC Rhodium, I encourage you to read the wiki article and all stickies posted around the Rhodium forums, as well as the annoucement at the top. Hope that helps

1. ok thankyou so i shud ask att for an unlock code if i want to use it in china?/out of US
2. ohreally? i wasnt sure about this because when i went to att store and asked to buy a contract free tilt2, the guy said that they wud add a 30 dollar data plan to my line so it was really confusing
3. what about all of these roms that people are making on this forums do i need to cid unlock to use them?
oh new question are all these roms on the internet like windowsmobile specific? like will 1 rom work with 6.1 and another work with 6.5 or do they all work together
You could use an unlock code from AT&T, or use the tool I linked to in my post. As I said, it's $15, but it's very much worth it since it SIM unlocks, the money is used for good purposes, and it CID and Security unlocks as well.
While they may try to sell you a data plan when you buy it, they can't add a data plan when you insert your SIM
A CID unlock is not required to use the cooked ROMs on this forum. To use the custom ROMs on this forum, you need HardSPL. CID unlocking only allows you to use signed HTC ROMs, meaning that you can flash a TMobile ROM onto your AT&T Tilt while still running stock bootloader. However, CID unlocking won't let you run the custom ROMs you'll find online, since they aren't signed by HTC.
I'm afraid I don't understand your last question, sorry.
oh i mean do all of these roms work with windows mobile 6.5 and 6.1? or only one and not the other
All ROMs are only Windows Mobile 6.1 or only 6.5. If you flash a 6.5 ROM onto you device, you will be running windows mobile 6.5. Same for 6.1. There is no way for two versions of WM to coexist on the same device (that I know of).
where do i put cab files?

The ROM totally replaces everything (including Windows) on the device.

You put them on the device. To install them, you browse to them in File explorer mobile, then tap on them, and they will install.

Follow the instructions here, and skip over the HardSPL part if you've already HardSPL'd.
Also, since you've finally recieved your device, I encourage you to read the Rhodium Wiki, as well as all the stickies around the forum.

[Q] Noob Question RE: Unlocking

I am new to both tweaking my phone and also new to this forum.
I feel I have to ask this question because I don't want a brick!
I obtained an unlock code from T-Mobile and unlocked my phone that way.
Do I still have to flash Hard-SPL for any reason? Is there something about it that will make flashing a new rom easier or more stable?
There are various forms of "unlocking" on the phone. The unlock code you get from your carrier is to SIM unlock the phone. This allows you to use the phone with a SIM card from other GMS carriers.
You still need to HardSPL the phone to flash any custom ROMs. SPL locks the phone to only be able to flash official T-Mob branded ROMs. So HardSPL unlocks it so you can flash any ROM. Completely different from the SIM unlock.
Moved as not ROM Development.
