I have an unhealthy habit (well, according to my wife anyway ) of replacing my phones every 3-4 months. So far this year I had 8525 (excellent phone but a bit too bulky for my liking) and Nokia N75 which is my current phone. However, I am sorely missing a real keyboard and would like something a tad smaller/slimmer then 8525. So far my choices have been narrowed down to Dash and Blackjack. I was able to briefly fondle both phones and am now at the crossroads, which one to choose?
Both phones share many similarities but there are also major differences. Being a 3G user on at&t network I have been spoiled by both 8525 and N75, so as far as data is concerned Blackjack is a clear winner. However, BJ has some major annoyances that I am not sure I will be able to tolerate. First, whoever designed the keyboard on the BJ should be slapped with a live wet trout. To make d-pad flush with soft keys was a major oversight IMO. Second, I do not care for a proprietary charge/sync/audio port. I like Dash's keyboard much better and the curved shape feels really good in hand. Wi-fi is a bonus but is something I can definitely live without. Otherwise, both phones appear to be fairly similar.
I am leaning towards purchasing Dash, but am afraid that lack of 3g will frustrate me. Can anyone who's using or used both phones share their thoughts as to which one I should choose? Is at&t EDGE fast enough to handle streaming audio like Shoutcast? Money is not an object, both phones are about the same price.
Sounds like to me that you'll like the HTC Cavalier more. With twice the speed of the Dash at 400mhz, it also carries 3G capability. The only downside is that it's about $500+ in most sites. I use the Dash and I love it but don't count on EDGE streaming anything with decent quality. Depending where you are at, EDGE vary in speed. I get about 120kbps on average which is slow for me. It does the job and I won't complain since I'm only paying $5.99 for the internet access. As for Wi-Fi, it's a BIG PLUS. I know you mention that you don't care much for it but trust me, you'll want it if you purchase the Dash. Wi-Fi is a luxury feature at the moment since not many phones actually have it especially in such a slim factor like the Dash. Whenever I'm home, I turn on my Wi-Fi and hope one day when T-Mobile has officially set up their 3G network, I'll be browsing and zooming through my webpages without the Wi-Fi.

He's talking about T-Mobile T-zones Internet which is $5.99 a month
The T-Zone internet access is sort of hit or miss. Everyone used to be able 'utilize' The TZones $5.99 plan for full internet access. Originally designed for limited web service on a vanilla cell-phone -- we all used to be able to use it's proxy settings on our WM devices and cheat our way into full Edge internet access. Over the past year T-Mobile has been working on ways to enforce this basic TZone access on WM devices. Seems these changes are being implemented by region, as it still works for many, but not all, T-Mobile WM device using subscribers. It stopped working for me about 6 months ago, with WM5. There's a bunch more about this here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=306361
WM6 includes a T-Zones update, which enhances with a separate WAP browser that gives you TZones limited access to the web (movie times, weather, news, etc) For a couple bucks more a month, you can sync your corporate or personal email accounts to TZones, and to your device. Messenger, IE, and anything else that connects to the Internet won't work with TZones.
If you're unable to jury-rig your Dash for unlimited access at the TZones rate, they want you to purchase the $30 per month 'Total Internet' plan that includes unlimited EDGE and HotSpot WiFi access. You can opt for the Blackberry plan, no WiFi -- unlimited EDGE for $20 -- comparatively pretty reasonable.
You asked about Shoutcast with EDGE. Don't know about AT&T, but with T-Mobile, not so great. Fine for lower bitrate voice audio like newscasts. Music skips >a lot< and video can be downright frustrating. What I find better is packing 20 hours or so of recorded Shoutcast streams from my laptop to the 2-gig MicroSD card in my Dash. Using ULEAD video products, I've converted about 10 hours of video into high quality files that all fit on my 2-gig card with a lot of room to spare. I'd say microSD card useage is a better consideration than streaming (with the Dash). There's a learning curve, but it pays off
As to which is better -- I'd say a overall a Dash is better, mainly as a hold-over device until all the new gadgetry that'll be out in 6 months, or better yet, a year. I helped someone set up their BlackJack. It's nice too. What I didn't like about the BJ: battery life. Without changing something in the registry, the broadband-service radio stays on, even if you aren't currently using, or just don't use, broadband. Prior to the registry change, the device barely made it through a day -- low battery alerts after 7-8 hours. After the change, it's on par with the Dash, however, will only use AT&T's EDGE service. The average user isn't going to think to Google this, or find the software that lets them make the change.
With a 2-year commitment, you can get a Dash for free via Amazon.com or LetsTalk.com. There are probably offers for the BJ, but I'm not familiar with AT&T.
As you have an interest in audio -- the 2.0 Bluetooth on the Dash produces amazing sound on a set of Motorola S9 headsets (also Bluetooth 2.0). I believe the BJ is Bluetooth 1.2 even after a WM6 upgrade.

Hi, some more thoughts about both phones... I own a Blackjack, my girlfriend a Dash, so I know them quite well.
Well, if you really are a 3G user... this is a big plus for the blackjack. I am from Germany, so I am not sure if it makes sense the German/American EDGE/3G networks, but here in Germany the blackjack is definitely much quicker with HSDPA (up to 1,8 Mbps) compared to EDGE.
But this is the only "objective" factor that I can mention. Oh, maybe one more: I like the Wi-Fi support omy Blackjack very very much. But here in Germany the Dash is also offered by O2 (called XDA Cosmo), and this version offers Wi-Fi as well. If you have the opportunity to get the Dash including Wi-Fi support (I think the original HTC devices support Wi-Fi as well) I would go for it...
Just a few more points that I noticed:
- the standard battery of the Blackjack is really weak, the dash will work longer. But I got a 2nd, extended battery with my blackjack, and I am quite happy with it. Disadvantage: it is thicker than the standard battery, so the device is not so slim/elegant anymore. Anyway, I think it still looks great.
- in my opinion, the blackjack "feels" better - I think the keyboard is a little more solid (?), and - sounds stupid - I really like to touch the blackjack, don't know how Samsung did it.
- On the other hand, I prefer the display of the Dash/Cosmo (I think it is a little brighter/clearer)
I emailed HTC Support two days ago and told them how disappointed I am with the company for delaying the WM6 packages.
This is the response I got:
Hello Sir,
The Rom update for the Windows mobile 6 for the S620 has not been released yet. Please be a bit more patient. As soon as the update will be released (hopefully end of September) It should be available for download from the E- Club section of the HTC website.

I'm seriously considering selling my S620 and buying a Blackjack because they HAVE actually made the s/w available already.
HTC's support has been very poor - I know this from earlier experience.
Hang in there ... I'm told by my contact at Microsoft the WM6 for S620 will be released by HTC on 17-Aug. Which means sometime within 2 weeks of that ;-)

In preparation for the upcoming release of the I-Phone O2UK are rolling out an upgrade to the network and are adding EDGE. OK, it is not 3G but it is better than what we have right now!
http://www.theregister.co.uk/2007/09/14/o2_edge/
What speed is Edge? I see a reference to an unlimited data tariff on that Register article anyone have any further news on that? I am just considering leaving O2 due to their poor data tariff offerings.
Edge is about 3 times quicker than GPRS. 3G is mostly about 4 times faster than GPRS.
I've been on the O2 Simplicity Tarrif for a couple of months but I got really feed up when my £15 bill ended up totalling £35 after a couple of weekends away data usage.
I'm off back to T-Mobile and if they (o2) release a unlimited data tarrif then I'll be back but I've a funny feeling that any unlimited data tarrif will be limited to Iphone users.
For four Slots Edge can (in theory) go upto 236
I'm thinking of going with 3 but I have to research their tarriffs and coverage. I'm told they have the best deal going for data currently (less than a tenner amonth for unlimited 3g connection). Shame the Orbit don't support 3g

Which was the whole point about my first post on this thread.
Does the Orbit support edge then?
Would we ever know that we were connected by edge, is there a diferent icon we would see?
You know the little square with the 'G' on it when GPRS is available? Well if EDGE is available you get a little square with an 'E' on it.
I have noticed this over the past week, that I sometimes come upon an Edge enabled area.
Hmmmm, I'm nearly jealous.
But are O2 actually going to do something with their tariffs, so you can actually afford to use this new speed?
out of interest if you use the mms number to browse the net do you get charged? as it doesn't come out of your 1mb free browsing...
i've noticed mms uses 'my work network' which has the '02 active' connection...

It is charged by the minute as a dial-up connection (except for MMS which is free for incomings)
Well since I'm due an upgrade and O2 have sent me a canvassing letter I thought I'd phone them about their upcoming data packages. The lady told me that they were due to roll-out an unlimited data tariff on the 1st of October. I couldn't get any more than that out of her, no pricing info etc. It's only a fortnight away so I told her I'd wait until the 1st then phone back.
I did ask if there were any future plans for 3g or if they were sticking to edge but I don't think she understood the question: "I think they will just stick with what they have got"

Iphone will be available in the UK from the 9th November, at the Moment O2 are building up there Broadcasting towers to try and keep up with the Demand, at this moment there only 30% fully running.
There will be no iPhone with 3G capabilities yet,
The iPhone is a peice of **** anyway. It does nothing that the majority of HTC devices can already do or be made to do, but without being locked down to what Apple thinks the customer should be allowed to have.

Yeah I get this at Home in Northampton but as soon as I travel out I do not get this
...reading between the lines.....
The new iphone tariff on o2 which matches my current tariff is £45 - compared to the £35 I pay, but offers unlimited (ish) GPRS....
Using my powers of deduction I guess this will probably mean the unlimited browsing option (web'n'walk equivalent) will be £10.
If they charge any more than this there will be uproar!!!
(wonder if they will let me reduce to a lower tariff so I don't have to pay £45 a month?
Does GPRS use an awful lot less battery power than wifi too I guess?

ok i am laughing here a little, the iPhone will be a 16gb when its released, the 8gb has been scrapped, the Edge is 3 times faster than normal GPRS plus there are some new features available.

The iphone is 8gb not 16gb (the ipod touch will be 16GB) according to O2 and CPW.......or is Steve Jobs telling little lies?
Ok, as it so happens, I have both a T*Mobile Touch Pro 2 and an AT&T Tilt 2 sitting here in my hands and I'm trying to decide with him I'm going to keep. In doing so I thought I would write a little review of both phones side by side.
I'll call the T*Mobile Touch Pro 2 the TP2 and the Tilt 2 the Tilt 2
1. Cost
I paid $50 for the TP2 + $11 next day shipping. My plan is about $70 a month and that's with the insurance. Now I'm going to be hit with a $175 ETF so the final cost for the TP2 is $225.00 without any rebates or hassles.
I paid $300 for the Tilt 2 + $15 for next day shipping. My plan is about $70 a month without insurance. I had to pay a $18 upgrade fee + $100 for the Microcell to have any chance of using the phone in the house.
Winner: TP2, especially if you are free and clear of your current contract
2. What's in the box
The TP2 came with the battery, wall charger, Multifunction audio adapter, stereo headphones (wired), screen protector and a really nice case. Overall it felt like it's a well put together package with everything you would need. The screen protector was decent (though I'll order a real one from Boxwave).
The Tilt 2 came with the battery, wall charger, Multifunction audio adapter, and a screen protector. Compared to the TP2, this seems cheap. I mean come on, No head phones? Lame! I will say I had less problems installing the Tilt 2 screen protector though due to the the bottom buttons being flush against the bottom of the phone.
Winner: TP2
3. Build Quality
The TP2 has a standard keyboard but slightly smaller hardware buttons. It also has an external MicroSD slot and reset button. Over the back, it has a larger mute button and larger grill area over the speakers. However it's case is harder to remove than the Tilt and it lacks the PTT button.
The Tilt 2 has a very flimsy feelign back cover and just feels cheap. While it's buttons on the front are larger and has a PTT button, it lacks just about everything else. Like ruining the keyboard, having to open the case to insert the SD card let alone reset the device is criminal.
Winner: TP2
4. Memory
I'll be honest here, this isn't a fair comparison. 6.1 vs 6.5 but anyhow..
TP2:
Storage - Total: 285.57MB, In Use: 55.46MB, Free: 230.11MB
Program - Total: 181.21MB, In Use: 78.21MB, Free: 110.00MB
Tilt 2:
Storage - Total: 226.30MB, In Use: 89.12MB, Free: 137.18MB
Program - Total: 187.08MB, In Use: 101.36MB, Free: 85.71MB
Winner - Draw!
5. OS
TP2: Windows Mobile 6.1 with TF3D 2.1.38165.1
Tilt2: Windows Mobile 6.5 with TF3D 2.1.19183217.0
Winner: Tilt2
6. Installed Apps
TP2 is fairly light on the bloat. It does come with TeleNav and Handango InHand, Presenter 5 and Google maps. It also has a nice application for checking your account status, etc which I found to be pretty neat. The down side is Opera isn't the default browser. I didn't try TeleNav so I can't comment on it.
Tilt2 is pretty bloated. There's Mobile Web, AT&T Music, Navigator, AppCenter, Mobi4Biz, WorldCard Mboile, WikiMobile, MSN Weahter, Facebook, My-Cast Weather, Online Locker and more and more. Now I'm going to guess some of this is useful, but man that's a lot of bloat.
Winner: for me the TP2 but you might find some of the apps useful.
7. Signal
I live in Cary NC which is just outside of Raleigh. Today I traveled all around the triangle to see how the phones would do.
TP2 - Had good signal strength pretty much whereever I went for voice, but I almost never saw 3G. I did get a lot of Edge, but according to T*Mobile's map I should be square in the 3G area. I have to call tomorrow. Inside my Office I had 4 bars for voice and Edge while at home I had 2 bars for voice.
Tilt 2 - I had a number of cases where I had 3G but # of bars was slightly below the TP2. At the office, I had 4 Bars and 3G but at home at I 0-1 bars and 3G.
Winner - Draw (TP2 for voice, Tilt 2 for Data).
8. GPS
Both suck and are as laggy as my Fuze. Come on HTC! Now both are untweaked and I'll be trying out their included GPS apps tomorrow on the way to work but I expected more.
9. Customer Service
TP2 - Getting this phone was easy. It's available in my local store but I choose the $50 offer. Simple to order and express to get here.
Tilt 2 - My god AT&T sucks and it's because that are so bad I started the switch to T*Mobile. They lied to me, never contacted me when they said they would, and shipped me the phone even though I canceled it.
Winner - TP2
Final Thoughts
Sorry AT&T but I'm still switching. I am a little worried about the lack of 3G signal but I'll call T*Mobile tomorrow and find out what the deal is. But their phone is cheaper, made better and in my case gets a better signal.
But the real winner here is the solid design. AT&T I can't believe you made the choices you did. Even if I ignore the keyboard, having the SD slot and the reset button under the case is just stupid.
Winner: TP2!
When I played with a T-Mobile Touch Pro 2 for a while I thought it was ugly compared to my unlocked Touch Pro 2. Even the rep in the T-Mobile store was in awe of my unlocked version.
The T-Mobile version is all square and boxy. It doesn't have that "classy" look that the rounded chrome dezel gives the unlocked and AT&T versions.
AT&T screwed up when they changed the keyboard layout, and a reset hole would have been nice. But I'm fine with the Micro SD slot being under the battery cover. I never change mine, and it's not like you have the shut the device down to access it anyway.
T-Mobile probably wins on the cost though.
I have been thinkiing of switching to t-moble as wel.l There 3g coverage is the only thing that has been keeping me staying put. There is limit 3g/ evo coverage on post for all networks. There are times were i would have one bar and other would have none with their services. The only advantages that att give in there training flyer are thier 3g network, optimized keyboard, ptt, and all the special att apps.

Have a look here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=550431
A very deep comparative is shown
I have both AT&T & TMO services and for the PPC handsets, I have gone to AT&T, at least since the Fuze. The AT&T 3G is just that much better for me in comparison to TMO's, and I am in So Cal (if I didn't need GSM, I would have grabbed VZW instead, that's what I use on my laptop).
I compared TMO's 3G and it doesn't seem it is matured enough judging by how my daughter's G1 almost not getting 3G half the time. I looked at the TMO's TP2 and even with the killer price of $150 (before the $50 promote), I simply didn't like how it felt & looked, seriously, who at TMO decided on these colors? And the squared-off edges made an already large device seem even larger.
OP,
I'm interested in knowing if you would be able to find out if the Radio Hardware is physically the same in both versions of the T-Mo Branded Touch Pro 2 and the Tilt 2 (I know the specs say they aren't but...).
I'm curious to see if there's a way to use my Unlocked T-Mo Branded Touch Pro 2 (or even the Unbranded Touch Pro 2 for that matter) on AT&T's 3G Network through a simple ROM Flash (and/or vice versa).
I'm sure you'd be helping plenty of others by looking into this.
Thanks!
Edit:
Who knows, maybe the physical chip supports more frequencies and are locked only through firmware... A similar theory once existed with the i900 Omnia... I guess it's worth a look.

Who knows, maybe the physical chip supports more frequencies and are locked only through firmware... A similar theory once existed with the i900 Omnia... I guess it's worth a look.

The answer is NO.
Buy a Tilt2 if you want ATT 3G service.
Buy a Tmo TP2 if you want Tmobile 3G.
Unless you can live with EDGE speed, then you can use ANY GSM TP2.
Hi guys,
Just wondering when will WinMo7 be released and what will the chances of us seeing it on our Vogues. Even though they will be about 2 years old by then.
Thanks for everyone's hard work.
Windows mobile 7 will be released in 2010. There's little to practically no chance that it'll run on our old devices. Officially, at least.
Take this with a grain of salt:
On LinkedIn, there has been two profiles (that I'm aware of) that cited working on the development group of Windows Mobile 7 for optimization of the MSM7x00 series chipsets.
That seems to imply that Windows Mobile 7 will run on MSM, but whether or not it comes to fruition (or provides for a decent user experience) is yet to be seen.
The biggest difficulty we'll probably face is an overhauled driver model, which would leave our devices without drivers that we can simply copy over.

Especially because we use resistive screens...
IMO, 6.5.x is where our phones will stay, if we are talking Winmo. Also IMO - that is also the case for majority of devices out there, even the ones being sold right now so how's that for getting your bang for a buck on the Vogue???
The Vogue is, given it's age, price, and specifications, a truly awesome phone. It's no wonder that it's one of HTC's most popular models ever.
Thanks for the insight guys. Good info.

agreed... the few times i called verizon i actually got a guy who has an htc ozone now but had the vogue.. he couldnt say enough good things, said verizon almost plans on them being regarded as the blackberry soon i dont know the truth to it but hes just sayin their brands are only gonna get better and soon it'll be a more recognizable name
right now i ask people if they heard of HTC and people are clueless
I love my HTC.
that said Im a realist.
providers are too busy scamming customers into monster contracts and bloated data plans to be interested in a real competitor to the blackberry.
competition drops prices...and therefore profits too.
I know full well Ièll be getting a blackberry in the near future as there is no BB messenger for win mobile yet.
the closest thing (msn messenger ish) uses 3x the data and requires me to have a major data plan.
unless htc decides to host that data and compete...like adding or buying into bb messenger. and getting on board with something to compete with the iphones appstore... theyre placing themselves in a solid 3rd
next to all the other regular phones with calendars.
im seriously disappointed.. i love win mobile and its customisations etc
but wheres the supported appstore so I can find decent software and apps for 2 dollars like the iphone... really we need to admit this
its the supported store thats getting these developers paid...and why theyre getting good apps and fast
and requiring full internet for messaging... bb messanger doesnt need it.
i just thank the programmers for threaded texts

well depend with witch provider you are with , i'm with bell and my vogue htc let me use unlimited data plan for 5$ per month, with ev-do tech that is twice as fast as 3G ,
yes you are wright win mobile apps are way too expensive, they should aim at this htc should allies them self with windows mobile to implant real competition with Blackberry and IphoneCRap ,
it is sure something is coming with Palm getting best phone of the years when everyone tough they where buried long ago , LG that as the EVE that look great , htc as to be able to come up with something that will be about the same price to be in the competition,
what is killing everyone at the moment is the exclusivity of the carrier , as long that this will stand we will be charge crazy price for are plan and are device , we must complain to HTC , and carrier like Bell and Telus to stop getting the exclusivity on new model so every one can have a true good mobile experience ,
Sorry bobsters
the only people to complain to is HTC and our federal government.
In the last few weeks the CRTC denied WIND-MOBILE its liscence to operate because they were apparently not CANADIAN enough... Then was IMMEDIATELY OVERTURNED by the federal government.
This is because (in my and MOST other Canadians opinions) the CRTC is so deeply in the pockets of rogers bell and telus that they stink of phone company genetalia.
not a single consumer friendly decision has come out of the CRTC in regard to phone internet and TV in yeaers.. the posotive ones were mandated by the federal government against the CRTC's reccomendations and will.
WIND mobile a subsidiary of YAK, out bid the likes of bell and rogers for the newly released cell frequencies over a year ago.
in that time Rogers and bell have slowly reduced prices whilst becoming hosehold names for having the largest cellular profits in the world (also charging the highest rates in the world too)... and then by addition the new CEO of Rogers claimed that Canada couldn't support another major carrier.
ya?!?!?......... thats why you skyrocketed the charge for bulk minutes being sold to the likes of Virgin & Fido who both sold out to you in the last few years.
I dont work for wind, but I cant wait... if they can hold their own and not get baught out they'll steal a nice big chunk outta bell and rogers and telus... then maybe out the competing ceo's in youtube video's when they come with the bribe money and CRTC in pocket.
My phone is hacked to run on another carrier tahn origionally locked (IMEI swapped) also so I can have the phone without a data plan.
if you check your bill against everyone eltse. your probably paying close to $100/month... for a phone that has the internet hamstringed and capped, using old technology that has serious black holes in coverage.
my unlimited regular intenet at home costs me an additional $50/month
when I make a call it goes toa tower then is routed through fiber optic to a server and then handled like email or streaming audio....
why is this 2x the price??
the rest of the world pays $125/month for unlimited everything... including tethering and national long distance at roughly 7mb/s (high speed ultra)
that means I could save roughly $150/month on not having a home phone or home internet or a long distance plan...EVEN WHEN PACKAGED.
canada sucks
please excuse the rant.. needed to be done.
foot firmly inserted... just waiting for a push
So I just got off the phone with ****-T&T a couple hours ago and I'm really pissed.
I called them to clarify their "grandfather clause" exceptions to the data requirements for smartphones because I have had a Tilt without data for over 2 years now. The Tilt is on life support now so I was looking into getting another phone outright without an upgrade so they don't force data on me. I have no need for data because I am in the wifi spots 24/7 and only need a smartphone for e-mail capabilities.
It turns out that despite being grandfathered, if I get a smartphone any other way other than insurance claim my ATT Tilt, then they will require that I add data. Even though I don't need data. ****ing bull****.
And it looks like they don't have any more Tilts so they are going to send me a Tilt2. I have heard mixed reviews about the Tilt2, so I decided to come and get some opinions for those who have had it and tested it for a while here.
Any input regarding the Tilt2 (good or bad) is welcomed before I decide my next step. I have been with this ****ty company since they were Cingular and I am getting fed up with their bull****!
First off, calm down. If you really love(d) your tilt, which I'm guessing you do looking at your username lol, then you would look around on ebay, craigslist, amazon, etc for some good deals. They're all reliable sources, minus craigs, so you definitely have one option there.
But if you insisted on getting a tilt 2, I would have to say no. I fell in love with it for the first 2 months I bought it but the love slowly faded away. WM 6.5 is truly remarkable in all that it can do but over time the small laggy/choppy responses gets to you...it did for me. But another cool thing you can do, if you hadn't known, is dualboot android.
Honestly, go get yourself a nice android phone. Android is the next leading OS next to Apple. And until WM 7 comes out (which is Winter 2010/Spring 2011), WM will be far behind.
Good luck.

Thanks so much for that honest response. I liked my Tilt since it was my first smartphone and over time, I got to flash roms so it was fun. But with WM sucking so much and all the issues with flashing Manila roms, when it started dying, I decided I would go for another phone.
I was looking into the Blackberry Bold 9700 because of the remarkable e-mail client, but ATT shot down those dreams rather quickly. I just don't get it. Why does it matter what phone I am using if I don't need a data plan. It's just frustrating because they are feeding into the persona of that big greedy corporation that doesn't give a crap about customers.
And you just reiterated all of my concerns about the Tilt2. Although it has gotten some solid (4/5) reviews on some tech sites, customer reviews are 2.5 or 3/5 because of lagging, bloatware, etc issues.
Well alot of the customers bad reviews are from using the stock ATT Rom included with the Tilt 2. If you flash a new ROM almost all of the lagging, choppiness and bloatware is completely gone. I was afraid when I first got my tilt 2 as well because of all the negative reviews from people, but after flashing a new ROM I instantly fell in love with it. Almost everyone whos seen my phone is extremely jealous of it because of the nice screen, full keyboard, and the beautiful User Interface, and most of those people have owned iPhones. You'll have to experiment which ROM is the best for you, but I have no doubt with all the wonderful chefs here on XDA you'll find one that you love. Also If you buy an unlocked phone, not from AT&T you wouldn't have to buy a data plan, I got mine of eBay, and didn't have data on it for about a month. Plus with the Android development coming along smoothly for the Tilt 2, my guess is a very amazing full port will be available within this year. But I would have to agree with urkrnboy90 and say that WM 6.5 is far behind Android, and Android is an amazing OS.
I ran into the same issue about having to upgrade my plan. I told them I would be looking for another providers and they changes their tune real quick and let me add 2 smart phones without having to add the 30.00 a month data plan per line. They need to have a reasonably priced family data plan for smart phones. Sorry but i'm not gonna pay more for my cell phone internet than my home internet. Considering I have a 12mb cabe internet for 50.00 a month. If they can get me that kind of speed or faster for 60.00 a month we can talk then. I love my cell rom v10.1 only fix i needed was the keyboard fix and it runs much better than the stock rom.
I like my tilt 2 but thinking of selling it and getting a HD2.
I started getting the unlimited data for $15 several years ago on my V3i Razr and upgraded to a Palm 750 and then went to a Q9h by then I was not under contract anymore, I then bought a Tilt (ebay) stuck my sim card in it and never looked back. I bought a Tilt2 about 2-3 months ago and so far I havent been charged the $30 "PDA" plan still on the $15 so If I were you I would buy another phone on ebay and stick your old sim card in it and see what happens. I have heard of people doing this and being ok UNTIL they updated another non-smart phone on their plan and it knocked them out from under the grandfather clause, good luck.
Assassin5150, XanderCorp and 03hdfatboy, thanks for the input. I went to the ATT store by my house to just give the Tilt 2 a test run, but unfortunately, they didn't have any on hand. I wanted to get a feel for the phone.
It's interesting because I was on the phone with a Rep and then the Floor Manager for about 30-45 minutes and they were just reading off the cue-cards. I have an old sim-card and even though they give me one of the newer ones, I never put it in my phone. So I am hoping that if put it in another phone, the old sim card won't work like the new ones where they will know which phone I have. Did either of you have the old sim-card?
I have a tilt2 and I am very satisfied with it. I had a touch pro first, and I will say that for some reason that the tiltt 2 is a lot better. and as far as the data plan, it would be easier to just buy the tilt 2 outright and not get a data plan. AT&T is getting ridiculous if I might say so my self
I went from Tilt to Tilt2 (Fuze was garbage) And I love It, but you do have to tweak it a little, remove bloatware, and store all availble on your SD Card, and the Speed is nice, and I'm running Stock Rom and I absolutely Love it, I don't care for the Sense/TouchFlo so I use Mobile Shell ! But overall I'm Satisfied with it, And Will keep it til a good Android is Availble, WM7 is not for me. Oh And Also most of all your TILT programs are compatible with your TILT2 , though I would look for the upgraded ones for a better screen image.
Another positive vote for the Tilt 2.
Stock it can get sluggish but I am using the Energy ROM and OMG this is a new phone all together.
The SPB Shell is also a nice option.
First off, the data plan requirement for smartphones is not exclusive to ATT. Most other carriers require this too. Sure, you don't have to like it. But it seems like the OP is implying that ATT is alone in this policy, when they are not.
Second, I moved from the Tilt to the Tilt2, and the old phone just doesn't compare. Sure, the stock Tilt2 ROM can be sluggish. But the stock ROM on the old Tilt was even more so. I was actually pretty happy with the responsiveness when I upgraded. Also, a lot of tweaking can be done to improve the stock speed. But I eventually went to an Energy ROM, and its just amazing how much faster, more functional, and stable it is now. Not completely mandatory to flash a new ROM, but its a nice option.
And in just about every other respect, the Tilt 2 is far superior. The screen is much larger, higher resolution which makes it just gorgeous. I quite like the form factor (though some complain about the size/weight). Its sleek, sexy, and has a nice feel. Its almost identical in footprint to the iPhone (and competitive smartphones), just thicker since it has a real keyboard (which is a very fair tradeoff). Speaking of which, the keyboard is wonderful. Since the phone is bigger, so is the keyboard, making it even better then the old Tilt. The camera is better than the old Tilt, and the speakerphone is excellent (just about the best on a cell phone).
Bottom line, the Tilt2/TP2/Rhodium is the best smartphone around right now with a hardware keyboard. Windows Mobile has its drawbacks, of course. Especially now that its the "lame duck" of phone OS's until Windows Phone 7 comes out. Plus, the Rhodium is really getting pretty far along in age at this point (I hate to say it). If I was looking for an upgrade right now, I'd be seriously considering an Android phone. That's assuming you can live without a real keyboard, seeing as waiting for new Androids does not seem like an option.
First off, please let me say I know I am NOT supposed to say much about the Tilt2 since I am on Tmo Pro2, but hey, they are pretty much the same thing and I was with AT&T ever since they were Pac Bell until I finally had enough of with their spotty service at my home...they even suggested me to move LMAO This is going to be a rather long post since I am going to try to put my two cents in for a few different replies I've seen...so please forgive me.
Anyway, I had, sorry, have, the Tilt, rock solid phone nonetheless. Much like my Treo 650, the Tilt is like a freaken rock. I remember I did update the ROM before and tried both with all the apps AT&T loaded into the phone and without, not much different between the two. I tweaked the phone with regedit and made it to the way I like it.
I bought my phone right out. Back then, the BS was a bit easier to deal with. Called the first store and they said they had it in-stock (within first week Tilt was out,) went to the store, asked for the phone, the girl asked "Are you going to re-new your contract?" Errr, nope, not planning to (nor did I tell her about the $15 internet plan.) "Oh, the phone was sold out this morning." What? I just called 15 mins ago. Anyway, same story went on for two more stores till I learned to say "yes, I am renewing my contract." My credit card was out almost the same time as they pulled the phone out from the back. Heehee.
At some point last year I finally had enough with their poor services around my house. Thru out a whole month, I was back and forth with their 611. One said it's because I live right next to a police station and their radios are robbing my signal...er...LOL...ok, I didn't know NexTel runs on GSM nor did anyone ever tell me police radio required SIM! One said it was because I wasn't on the $30 PDA plan and she wanted to changed it, which I told her no cause at the time I was on the phone with them I was on an unlocked Samsung candybar. One told me it was handset issue, which I told them nope, cause I have Tero 600, 650, Tilt, Blackjack, unlocked quad bands and non of them get any signal! One said it was because I never turn my phone off to allow the phone a chance to update itself...ha, you turn the phone off and expect it to update itself while it is off? GOOD ONE! One said it was because I had an old SIM and told to go to the store and get a new SIM at no cost to me. Ha, the sales tried to charged me for the SIM until he read whatever there were on his screen. Anyway, to proved them wrong, I called 611 and as we were talking about the signal, my call dropped just when I got near my house. The BS with AT&T, I got a lot horrible stories, still beats the crap out of me as to why I stuck with them for so long. Anyway, what I had learned was that whether old SIM or new, they know what phone you are using. I didn't ask the detail but I think the cell signal itself put out the IMEI number since they read that number back to me when I was using an unlocked quad bands. If you were to call them for any issue and you are paying for the $15 plan instead of the $30 one, try changing your SIM into an older or any candy bar phone a day or two before you actually call AT&T. Unless you darn sure it's "handset" issue, otherwise, there isn't much of a need for them to know which phone you are using. Anyway, I did it like that thru out my Tero, Blackjack, Tilt and all the way till I canceled my account with them. I don't even remember how long my contract had been gone.
Anyway, I waited too long for the them to push the Tilt2 to the market plus all the bad services I went thru with their 611, so I left.
Speaking from using Pro2, I don't have much complain. RegEdit pretty much made it work the way I want it to. Would I go back to my Tilt? Nah. Tilt is a really great phone, I love it so much to the phone I didn't even bother to look at any other phone as long as they can't tilt! Hey, the tilt part of the Tilt can get to ya! But as tech moving forward, the phone is stuck in the past. There are a lot Tilt2 or Pro2 can offer that Tilt can't really match up. Now, I know it's not the best compare you can do, but try stopping by Tmo store, most of them, even the some in the middle of the mall have the Pro2 sitting there with the battery and SIM in. Give it a try...I haven't get a change to play with Tilt2, so please, for all you Tilt2 users out there, BE EASY on me if you gonna beat me up for my comments I know Tmo Pro2 is running on a lot less preloaded apps than the Tilt2...gosh, I can only imagine how much apps AT&T preloaded in it since they did that to Tilt. But serious, it's the WinMo 6.5 you are going to test out...
Anyway, good luck.
If you buy it fully out right they can't make you do ****
I have a Fuze, a Tilt 2 and an iPhone. Among them all I think fuze is the most well build phone I've ever had, it just has that feel of solidity when you hold it, and the magnetic stylus tip just screams for quality.
I dont do too much sms, so I haven't really used the hardware keyboard on the tilt2 as much, but when I do use it, it really shines. It's way better than the Fuze keyboard or any BB keyboards.
I would say go for the Tilt 2, you wont regret it, but you do need to flash to a new ROM, cus the stock Rom is pretty darn slow...

Do you know of an HD2 that's compatilble with US AT&T 3G?

If I were you I would get the unlimited data plan if you still can. USA today just recently said ATT is getting rid of their unlimited plans for 14.99 for 200mb or $25.99 for 2GB. So if you don't sign up for unlimited now, you will never get it with ATT again. Plus they dumped their prepay deal so they pretty much suck now. I'm not gonna run a credit check for a $40 bill each month. So I switched to Tmobile with my ATT Tilt(1). Well turns out Tmobile runs on a different band then everyone else so to use 3G with Tmobile you have to have an actual Tmobile branded phone. Was planning on going back to ATT with the unlimited data then stumbled onto a slightly scratched up Tmobile Touch Pro 2 for $150. Snatched it up and livin the good Tmobile life. Turns out here Tmobile 3G is 10 times better then ATT. Even where guys are sleeping with their cousins I still get a strong 3G signal. And finally this happened at work which was funny as hell. My coworker has an iphone and ATT 3G. We have a lil cell phone war. I start up my youtube and show HD youtube as good as your desktop. He runs his youtube and it looks all crappy and low res. He then claims its because he's on 3G and if he were on wifi it would look as good as mine. Well I hooked up my 3G into a wifi router and damned if he wasn't right. His youtube was in HD when he was using my tmobile 3g conn. on his wifi iphone. Thought it would make a great Tmobile 3G war commercial. Lesson is all those maps and 3g speeds don't mean jack when you provider is limiting what you can do on your phone.

Probably the LEO or international HD2 and not the Tmobile branded one.
I am happy with my Tilt2, I am using the cell rom. my phone kept its stock rom just long enought for me to get it home and flash it, I upgraded from the Tilt to the Tilt2, the phone is overall better, I just wish it had the flash like the Touch Pro.
Hmm. Thanks for all the input everyone.
So I was debating between the Tilt2 or the Bold 9700. Both phones will cost me $50 to get brand new so price isn't an issue. My main issue was no data + e-mail. I want a phone that works wonders with e-mail because that is the reason I need a smartphone.
After setting my heart to the 9700 and being very close to committing to it, I hear all this stuff about how you can't access Blackberry's e-mail (i.e. push e-mail) w/o a date plan because of ATT, RIM, and other providers requiring it. This brings me back to square one because the phone loses some of its spark if I can't have access to RIM's amazing e-mail client. Let's face it, outside of the e-mail, Blackberrys don't really get a lot of praise for the OS.
So for those of you who use Tilt2's e-mail, how is that? After reading so many responses, I am back to 50/50 or 60/40 in favor of the Tilt2. If all it takes is a ROM flash, then I don't have too much problems with that. But can you get push e-mail to the Tilt2?
you can actually get two push email on TP2, one for windows live and you can setup another one with outlook.
The only thing TP2 lacks is a little speed bump and flash light for camera.
I'm fully satisfied with my TP2, though I'm gonna import an HTC Desire from australia which works on AT&T's 3g band. After heavy research over the past few month, I feel android is the ultimate os that suits me the best..
Not sure if this would really require it's own area, but this is the official thread for the T-Mobile Cellspot.
It has been released today 9/17/2014 and most, including myself, are reporting a delivery date of 9/26/2014.
I think most of us here are wondering how much work will need to be done to customize it the way we normally customize our routers, as well as anything that can be done to work better with the work many of our favorite developers have been gracious enough to bestow upon us!
Anyone else order one today?
I must say, I do love it. Much faster than my last E2000 router for obvious reasons and much better when it comes to the settings. I am very pleased.
I got mine from the store when they activated my phone on Monday. It replaced my Cisco E3200, but I only have 15Mb down and 1Mb up service with Time Warner, so I don't notice any speed difference. In fact I've had a lot of trouble getting it to work consistently. My Windows 7 64 bit PC sometimes takes over a minute to connect after I log in. With Speedtest, a lot of my pings are over half a second, and a lot of tests have been under 1Mb/sec down and up. I'm tempted to reset it and start over, but it's been working fine today.
Here's the thing I'm wondering...just how necessary is the cellspot?
I briefly had a TMobile phone last year, and that phone supported an apparently early version of what they're pushing now; the only difference being I don't think it would hand a voice call back over to the cell network. However, that feature ran perfectly on my standard wifi gear without any additional help from me. It even worked pretty well on just about any wifi connection I was able to jump on.
It seems the only advantage to the cellspot is it's a rebadged Asus 802.11ac router for cheap. What's TMobile's angle on offering it so cheap?

I used Wifi calling on Sprint with my old router and haven't noticed any difference in call quality with T-Mobile and their cellspot router yet. With Sprint, the call wouldn't automatically transfer when I got in or out of range. T-Mobile says theirs does switch mid-call, but I haven't tried it yet. They also say that calls have priority, so a big download in the background won't affect call quality.
As for the cheap price, I paid the $25 deposit, but will have to return it if/when I leave T-Mobile or pay full price for it. I suppose it's great advertising for both T-Mobile and Asus.
