I want to take my XDA IIs apart to see if it's possible to;
1) tighten up the keyboard slider mechanism.
2) make the 'stops' that hold the screen in the open position a little stronger. ie screen will not no easilly drop onto my thumbs while typing in bed.
Before I start I thought I'd open the idea up to the forum....Any advice please ?
There seem to be two sets of screws to play with, two T6? on the sides and two smaller screws on the back of the screen ( when opened ) which seem smaller. There are also three screws in the battery bay which I think are not related.
I'll take a few photos while I'm inside and post.
Jeff
That would be really useful as i am thinking of doing the same, mine is starting to loosen (tho o2 are being very nice to me at the moment and offering me a new one!)
dismantled my XDA IIs
ok the phone has been dismantled. You can see a few pics at the following URL.
http://www.photobox.co.uk/album/1081010
They will load full size if you click on them a few times.
I will update the pics later with some text. Some initial observations.
1) The slider 'rail' system is spot/heat welded to the phone body - pict 2291 - does leave alot of room for adjustment.
2) The mic is actually quite large - if the mic hole in the casing was larger I think the people-ask-me-to-speak-louder problem would be improved.
3) The clip that holds the phone in the open/closed position is rubbish - pict 2295 - I would say that if this clip was stiffer the slider mechanism would function much better.
sorry. point 1 should read...

Hi, if it's not too much trouble, could you enlarge the part where the volume slider is? Mine don't seems to have any latch where the silver button can catch onto (i.e when i fixed back the casing, the button is very loose and unable to adjust the volume no matter how much i slide it up or down). TIA!
Hi - if you click on the thumbnail you get a slightly larger version, if you then click on this you get a new browser windows which gives you the full 4 Megapixel size of 2304 x 1704 pixels which gives alot of detail. These are all the ( in focus ) pictures that I have. The phone has now been put back together.
When I click on a thumbnail I get a medium-sized image, but clicking on that does nothing. Is there another way for us to get the fullsize images?
Thanks!
Replace the screen
Now the IIs is open, have you considered replacing the screen with an ordinary II? Do the connectors look the same?
Ive been reading, and can now observe for myself that the IIs screen is more 'yellow' than the II.
Thoughts?
sorry about the delay. Download the full size pics here

They're 4.5Mb !
No plans to swap the screen. Quite happy with mine.
Kudos for your bravery! Please post your solution to tightening the slider. You will undoubtedly ascend to PPC demi-god status if you find a way.Excellent work! Keep us updated please.
Cheers!
the pics in the zipped are corrupted..... its not even 4.5mb... something is wrong with the file pls upload the files again thank you so much... after looking at the bigger pics then i will be able to see if the LCD can be replace....
wertert,
Yes, zip file is only 1.5 KB... please repost.
When you took the device apart, did you notice where the WiFi antenna was and if it could possibly be relocated? A lot of people are complaining about the WiFi reception in the Blue Angel and, chances are, it's due to the antenna design/placement/location.
Thanks!
sorry about that.....I've tried uploading again but I seem to get a problem. Even uploading the raw jpg files is failing. I think my web site allocation is full up ! Does anyone have an FTP site I could put these picture on ?
pics
ps - I can also email them over. Can you get an address to me ?
sorry about the delay. Uploaded to another site. You should be able to get them from;

thanks for opening up the PDA2K for us...
1) So how did you finally fixed the loose keyboard????
2) Also, can it be that people that got their keyboard too loosed
used a PDA2K case such as the PEIL FRAMA one?
That case has a large and rather thick plastic that covers the
keyboad and goes between the keyboard and the body, it seems like it may case the keyboard to be loosed after sometime.
Thanks

Did you make any modifications to the phone to improve the ability of the mic to pick up your voice?
Krusell case loosened keyb in 1.5 months
Yes sorci's right! The gap increased since I got my i-mate into such a case with a thick plastic cover over the keys. Everyday i notice it incresing. Loox like paranoia Well, what to do with the problem? Living in Russia I got no hopes for friendly product support. Have to solve it by means of a screwdriver and a hammer. Wish me luck, colleagues.

My 2K internal pictures
I fixed my slider problem i have posted some pictures in 5 megapixel quality for clarity.unclip white plastic clips from bottom of slider plate and then Bend sides of slider plate out slightly, refit slider plate and plastic stop clips and you get smooth steady reistance all the way with no more gaps....ENJOY
Hi,
I've just got an XDA 2s, there is a gap about 1mm between the keyboard and screen, the gap is clearly visible on the bottom half of the phone, however there is no gap on the top half of the phone.
There is also side to side movement in the screen and it is extremely easy to accidently open the screen to reveal the keyboard. The mechanism is not at all rigid, could this be a manufacture fault.
I just wanted to know if anyone else has had this problem ? is ti only on the XDA2s or also on the the M2000 and MDA3.
I've had 2 replacements and the same problem is still there.
thx
yes they all have the same problem....
is this a fault and can it be repaired ?
Mine was nice and tight when it arrived, but now, 2 months later it is very slack.
Its a fault with the units - I guess they never stuck it on a jig and opened/closed it 10,000 times to see how it was afterwards.
There is a thread somewhere about dismantling the blue angel to tighten up the keyboard mechanism. I suspect however that it will come loose gain after a further month of use, and that most people will not want to be dismantling their units each month!
I doubt that it is a fault that can be easily corrected by HTC.
I cant understand why they did not include a catch to lock the KB in the open or closed position - with such a catch, the loose keyboard would not be too bad.
Nigel
almost too tight
My Siemens SX66 (from Cingular) keyboard is extremely tight and rigid. Granted I have not tried to see how many times I could open and use the keyboard in the almost month since I got my unit, but I have not detected any change in the opening effort or rigidity of the keyboard and I have used it quite a bit. I wonder if some of the initial production units which did seem to have significant issues with the keyboard are still not working their way out of the supply pipeline.

Hey so I purchased a new housing for my Universal and it arrives from Hong Kong with no instructions... I have replaced a few housings in the past but this by far is the most dificult.
I was wondering if anyone had any photos or instructions from a housing change they had done. I am right now stuck trying to remove the piece on top of the keyboard which ends up being bound to the motherboard by touchscreen connectors from the lcd. Any help would be great as I am truly in a bind.
Also, if anyone has any instructions on changing a housing on the MDA or any other IMATE/HTC product I could use those as well. THANKS.
I've changed my housing and it's pretty straight forward if you are careful and have the right tools.. A copy of the service manual with step by step disassembly and assembly is on the ftp site at..
ftp://xda:[email protected]/Universal/UNniversalL_Service_Manual_CONFIDENTIAL.pdf
The only problem I had was with the keyboard membrane in that it was slightly different to the old one. There are dimples that press against the membrane switched and these were in a different position on the space bar on the new membrane, so I found that the space bar didn't work and had to take the whole thing to pieces again. Also I found that the new housing didn't need three securing screws.
Anyway, It can be done just do it on a clear worktop with plenty of space.I printed out all the sheets and placed the disassembled part/screw on the relevant sheet, this stops screws getting mixed up!!
Going to give it a try right now. I appreciate it.
Hi Odyseus.Have you bought the keyboard too? I have found the housing but without keyboard(and mine's silver) in this shop in UK http://www.mobilefun.co.uk/product/10679.htm
I think it's a good idea to print out the sheets
I think the housing should come with a new keyboard pad? (Not the keyboard switch assembly. but the membrane with the keypads on).
Benbenben let us know how it goes. Why are you changing cases BTW? Different color or damaged?
Hi,
Due to a problem with my unbranded Touch Pro2 (UK model) I dismantled and then reassembled it. It's now working again except for the GPS which is aware of the satellites, but the signal of them always stays at zero.
I did some searching round this forum and found out (to my horror...) that apparently the GPS antenna was just a piece of magnetic tape and, you guessed it, I've long since thrown that away as I thought it was nothing more than some simple tape to keep the casing tight/decrease creaking noise/whatever.
So my question is, can anyone please tell me where the tape/antenna was positioned and any suggestions for a replacement? If anyone has any photos available marking the contact positions this would be even better.
Many thanks!
I'm having exactly the same problem. Where is the antenna and what does it look like?
Is the European TP2 so different from an US one? How can be possible that there is no info on this topic?
Thanks,
S!
Hello guys. I'm Stephen and I write from Milan.
I have a problem.
I bought from an English merchant on ebay a new housing for my One X.
All right, but just mounted the GSM / UMTS worsens considerably.
If I fit the original housing the signal returns to the fullest and receives well.
It 'possible that the housing buy in England are different from Italian?
What can be the cause of the deterioration of the signal?
Thank you.
Hi Stephen,
Until someone more knowledgable replies, I'll have to do! It's my understanding that the cell signal antenna sits in the housing and connects a copper plate to the mainboard via a set of pins, roughly in the centre of the rear side of the device.
Was the copper plate contact of the antenna on the new housing coated in some protective plastic or something? Don't go peeling anything off just yet though!
Essentially the same thing: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NfH48nbCFE4
What you can do is check out with the merchant who sold you the housing if they can refund you or something. In the mean time, check out with a repair guy who changed the housing (if you did not do it yourself). I also ordered a housing from eBay (easyphix store from Australia) and to be honest I had no problems whatsoever. The signal is fine. It could be that the unit was either damaged in transport or not replaced adequately. Does your 2G signal (GPRS/EDGE) pickup fine? If so, keep your phone network selection in that mode until you solve the problem with the housing.
