Replacement GPS antenna? - Touch Pro2, Tilt 2 Windows Mobile General

Hi,
Due to a problem with my unbranded Touch Pro2 (UK model) I dismantled and then reassembled it. It's now working again except for the GPS which is aware of the satellites, but the signal of them always stays at zero.
I did some searching round this forum and found out (to my horror...) that apparently the GPS antenna was just a piece of magnetic tape and, you guessed it, I've long since thrown that away as I thought it was nothing more than some simple tape to keep the casing tight/decrease creaking noise/whatever.
So my question is, can anyone please tell me where the tape/antenna was positioned and any suggestions for a replacement? If anyone has any photos available marking the contact positions this would be even better.
Many thanks!

I'm having exactly the same problem. Where is the antenna and what does it look like?
Is the European TP2 so different from an US one? How can be possible that there is no info on this topic?
Thanks,
S!

Problem with trackball!

Hi guys,
The trackball on my Orbit has stopped recognising being rolled up, left or right, and the silver clickwheel is stiff. Is this repairable myself, or should I be looking at a new motherboard?
Cheers,
Nick
hey dontpannic, don't panic
at least not too hard.
It is possible to exchange the trackball unit. You can sell a new one on the internet (I bought one via eBay, it was in your country and very cheap) Allthough, it is kind of hard to get the old unit out of your phone. You will have to totally apart your phone, because the trackball unit is stick to the daughterboard which is behind the LCD
There are a number of guides to help you apart your phone, you can find it somewhere on this forum. Once apart, you can blow the dust out and uncover your current trackball (mine was kind of hidden ) Or you can get the whole trackball off the board and replace it.
(I should note I got my phone apart couple of times, so have some experience. It can be tricky)
ciao!
I agree with amfasis, it can be tricky but gets very easy once you've done it a couple of times and know what to expect (how much force to apply separating parts...)
Everything on the daughterboard is pretty open under the cover so I suspect something sticky got dripped in there (cola?) from the symptoms you mention.
I thought I had a problem with my daughterboard as well since I was getting random scrolling action in all applications, but it turned out I had some dirt stuck on the side of the screen giving a bad signal on the touchscreen.
I took apart my whole trackball and even took the silver cover off the silver scroll wheel toggle and took out the tiny spring... that was an adventure getting it all back together correctly after cleaning!
I chalk all of it up to an excellent learning experience and now have no fear of taking it all apart just to look at it again. You will too.
Good luck!
Thanks guys! Will give this a try and see what happens

Need help on Wi-Fi/Bluetooth antenna.

Hello everyone.
I recently got a used TP2 with torn off wi-fi/bluetooth antenna.
I started experimenting with insulating tape and aluminum foil and managed to find an antenna shape that works quite well, but I don't know if it is as well as original antenna.
Any information on shape and size of original antenna would be very useful to me. Wi-Fi antenna is situated under the back cover, on the bottom of a phone, right between miniUSB and stylus. If at least anyone could make a good hi-res photo of antenna, I would highly appreciate that.
Thanks and sorry for my English, if its not quite well.
Looks like you should be talking to the guy on this thread!
Thanks again, I finally got a nice photo on my local forum and made an antenna identical to the original. Amazingly, original shape performs a bit worse than inverted-F type that I came up to while experimenting. To compare antennas, I measured a signal level from three WiFi access points with WiFI Monster and the level is about 3-5 dBm higher with inverted-F shaped antenna. It also seems to be higher regardless of antenna orientation, so i guess the gain pattern is OK, its still omnidirectional.
And improvement is even more noticeable with bluetooth headset (i tested on Plantronics Explorer 230), which now has a max distance about 12-15 meters (compared to 7-8 with original shaped antenna).
That is an interesting observation. I wonder if you could show us all the pattern, someone may be interested in modding their original antenna.
Photos attached.
On the first you can see what is left from original antenna.
On the second there are some variations of inverted-F shape (these are made from copper, not aluminum foil):
The bottom right performed best, on the third it is taped to the phone.
A couple more words on antenna modding.
As I found out, antenna does not like soldering for some reason (can't tell why, don't know enough about RF engineering), so I just fixed a new antenna to the remained piece of original with a masking tape. It should be better to make the whole antenna from one piece of copper foil, including the inner part, even though it will require partial phone casing disassembly.
Here I attached a file with exact sizes in millimeters. Antenna itself is actually about the same size as original, but extends a little further on the feeding line, which positively affects its performance.
And another interesting fact: TP2 has a miniature RF connector on the mainboard right next to antenna spring contacts, so it is definitely possible to use an external antenna.

[Q] GNex Screen Replacement from another GNex

Hi guys,
I searched the QA section but I didn´t find anything suitable. So here´s my issue:
I have a broken screen on my GNex GSM. The digitizer and the OLED is fine, only the outer glass layer is broken.
That´s really annoying so I want to exchange it. Here´s my plan:
Buy a broken GNex GSM on eBay where the screen unit is still ok. Do the replacement with my current phone and be happy again
I´m not quite sure if this will work. I teared my GNex apart and found out there is some electronic circuits glued between the OLED and the magnesium frame.I don´t know if the circuits affect any data or IMEI or anything like that.
Is there somebody out there you has experience with this procedure? Will I lose data? Will I lose root capabilities? Will my IMEI change?
Kind regards
Christian
Changing the screen will not affect ANYTHING else on the phone - only changing the mainboard would do that

Where did you buy your Screen Replacement?

I changed the thread title to hopefully get a bit more visibility. It seems that my issue stems from faulty replacement parts. So that leads to my question:
If you have replaced your screen/frame; where did you get your parts?
Are you happy with the product, or did you have issues as well?
-- Original Post Below --
Last week, Precious hit the parking lot at work and the screen shattered.
I ordered a replacement screen online, and followed the iFixit teardown to disassemble Precious, and rebuild it.
New screen works great, no dead pixels, no touch issues.
However, I'm terrified that I have damaged the antennas when removing the back panel.
I don't have any raw numbers from before, but I'd estimate that I'm getting about half as much signal strength as before. Prior to the replacement (even after the screen was cracked) I managed ~2 bars in my basement, and large buildings. Max strength outside. After screen replacement, I have no signal in my basement, and can barely maintain a data connection while inside large buildings (work, malls, etc).
I opened it back up to ensure that everything was reassembled properly, and everything LOOKS right. When removing the back panel I don't feel like I cause much torque to the case, but now I'm not sure.
Is it possible that I damaged the antenna during removal? Does anyone know how I can test the antennas? Any other ideas?
I appreciate any suggestions!
Thanks
It sounds like you and I are having similar issues as I have recently replaced my LCD screen and now have noticeably reduced cell signal reception. Have you found a fix for your issue yet?
My replacement screen will be here tomorrow. Ill post back if I have reception issues.

I have no leads unfortunately. I can't even find what leads are what radios. Upon closer inspection, there is a single antenna in the mid-frame as well.
Does anyone know which leads are for which radios? That might help isolate the problem, as I don't seem to have any bluetooth or wifi issues, only cellular.
I assembled my old cracked screen, frame and phone back to the way it was originally and now my reception is back working correctly, besides the cracked screen of course. I'm chalking this up to possibly some knock off screen/frame part that might be using different materials and is causing this signal degradation. I'll be returning this one and have already ordered a new part from another distributor. Hopefully I'll have better results once I get it installed.
Would you mind sharing where you purchased your faulty one from? I ordered mine from wholesalegadgetfix on ebay. Item: http://www.ebay.com/itm/151951830737
Please keep us updated on the quality if your second attempt, and who you sourced it though.
Thanks!
Here's the link to the first one that I purchased:

The new one that I just purchased today is the exact same one that you linked to. If you are having issues with the screen and frame purchased from them I am worried that I will yet again have the same reception problems. The site said OEM part, over 100 sold and they have a good rating so it looked like a safe bet.
Either way, I will update when I get the new one installed. Not looking good now but fingers crossed.
I'm not having any signal issues with the display I bought. I did the screen/digitizer assembly only though. No frame on mine.

Crap, I was hoping it would be the other way around. It sounds like there is at least one supplier out there creating a flawed product in one way, shape, or form.
Thanks for the link PiousInquisitor. The screen only route isn't an option for me, because my speaker grill has a hole in it from the drop (that was the impact point).
Does anyone have a lead on a known good Frame/Screen replacement part?

Thanks for the suggestion but I am in the same boat. I have to replace the whole screen/digitizer + frame assembly.
My new replacement LCD/Digitizer and frame came in and I installed it over the weekend. I've done some testing between work and my home office down in the basement, and I'm happy to say that I have reception again in each of the areas where I wasn't able to connect before. One thing I'd like to point out is that this time I cleaned all of the contacts with alcohol and tightened down the screws far more than normally would. I actually took a screw and screwed it into each of the holes first before installing that plastic mid-frame to make sure each screw had the room and wasn't blocked for some reason. I'm not sure if doing all of this was really needed but I thought since that plastic mid-frame is used as part of the antenna system, I wanted a close tight fit, so it couldn't hurt anything. So far so good, if anything changes I'll come back and post an update.
Good Digitizer/LCD/Frame combo.
I had the same problem as you in that the first screen/frame combo I ordered off ebay was a great screen but the frame was not a perfect fit for the mid-frame assembly at the bottom that contains the cellular antennas and therefore I had poor signal after installing it. I tried numerous ways to make sure the antenna contacts were good but nothing worked. I put the shattered screen/frame back on and had full signal. After returning that one I ordered the following one from Nevada that advertises Gorilla Glass and the oleophobic coating that the original did and it works great. Full signal, full 1920x1080 resolution and a perfect fit.
I'm not able to post the URL so just go to (www diymobilerepair com/lg-nexus-5x-lcd-touch-screen-assembly-frame). Its missing the periods after www and before com.

The 2nd screen replacement worked great! Phone works like new. Fortunately I was able to return the first screen I purchased for a refund and purchased the screen on frame that you mentioned. Thanks for the recommendation!

Can anyone loudspeaker with two pins work on any mobile device?

Hi, so, just spent 10 minutes trying to figure out how to post on this site. (Although having posted before -_-)
Anyway, I recently got ahold of a BlackPhone 2, a phone that for some reason has a high value, but low interest. The problem it has is related to the speaker, the loudspeaker sounds muffled as if it had drowned in water. I looked online and couldn't find a replacement anywhere, there were hardly any videos of disassembling the phone nor any threads with pictures. So once the phone came to me (bought through eBay) I couldn't help but think it was Xperia inspired. The shape, materials, etc... With no help from the internet, I decided to disassemble the phone myself, it was easy, exactly like an Xperia...
Now I've found the speaker, exactly like an Xperia.... it's basically a small rectangular component with two pins sticking out on one side, they make contact with the smaller board on the bottom of the phone. I couldn't find a replacement part for this online, so I'm now wondering whether or not I could use another speaker with two pins in the same location? Such as an Xperia replacement part?
Thanks for any replies!
