Being somewhat new to the site and appreciative of the hard work the chefs put into cooking the ROMs up, I was wondering what most people considered a reasonable donation to the chef of your choice? I won't mention which ROM I am using, but have been extremely pleased with it and want to make a donation. Of course, I expect some big numbers from all the chefs, so all you non-chefs chip in with a suggestion. And yes, I did a search for this but did not find anything on chef donations (only site donations).
Thanks and looking forward to your suggestions.
Maybe a good starting point would be what you would be prepared to pay for an official upgrade? (We all know they will be free, if they are actually available)
I am not suggesting you pay that.
Its a good question though.
I'm happy to admit I have made an odd donation of a tenner to the odd chef, as a token of appreciation and a couple of beers.
Use beer as your guide...about what you'd pay for a 12 pack. If you drink good stuff (and have more money) kick in $20. IF you drink Meisterbrau, send $7.
Personally, I usually send a little bit with each update (20 bucks for 2.0; if I'm liking the new 2.5, another 10 - 20).
Hope I'm not being too cheap, but I do have a truck to support.
If you only drink single malt scotch, then you should pay a tarriff of $100.

My personal opinion is that $50 - $100 is a good range..
But, then, I am a cook, so, I'm probably highly biased
Bad elf! When I accepted donations over all the stuff I did over at TC and at my site I never said a amount and tried to tell people to keep it small (which in turn is a karma modifier that only increases your amounts!). So long story short, elf gets nada!
But seriously, it's whatever you can afford and feel like you WANT to give. Donations are that, your WANTING to give a gift back to those that gave you something. If you blow $20 a day in eating out, then maybe $20 is a good number... What kind of "spending money" do you have for odd's and in's...

I was just kidding.. Seriously though, it comes down to this.. If you think nothing of spending $20 on something else you really want, then tip $20. If $100 is pocket-change for you, do that. If $5 is all you can throw around, that's fine too.. There really isn't a 'normal' donation. And, it is just that.. No cook will tell what your donation is, and everything is appreciated!
Thanks guys! Very helpful.

If anyone can help me obtain a newer (or release!) WM6 rom, I'd be ever so grateful. I'd like to do some cooking on it, and release it on here.
I can help you get it off your phone if that's they only way you have it! Or, of course, an .nb is good too
PM me if you can help.
I'm sure LVSW can help you with that
The only problem - it may cost you $2.5/MB

You are a genius...cooking a rom with some heavy bugs and WHAT A COINCIDENCE, you are the only man who can fix it...only by skype
a true entrepreneur!
An Opinion -
This is a developers site where people help each other and learn for free.
That's why this site is so amazing and successfull.
Asking for donations or money to help others for a fee should be stopped immediately. If anyone wants a donation or money for services (sick) then create your own private site and do it from there!
The argument that thier time is money and cannot help noobs, then they have no place on this site.
Also, ALL DONATION requests on this site should be for XDA-Developers and XDA-Developers Wiki sites ONLY.
This is a call to the administrators of XDA Developers: Please keep this site to the standards that it always is and has been.
^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
Could not possibly agree more with this.
Its disgusting and unethical.
Each to their own, but do it in your forum/web/blog not here.
I am all for donations, and praising/rewarding/bribing the creators of these excellent tools/roms etc.
Its a crying shame when that gets turned into a profit making, scamming situation and preying on noobs and constantly asking to be PAID (not donated to) to hep using free information just because they can't be bothered showing the way and would rather charge to do it themselves.
donations are DONATIONS!
(not talking about legolas)
If I want to reward a developer It`s my choice! to do that, I need a link for donations.
and guys, I dont know why your bugging LegolasTheElf,
here he gives he`s support with no demand, out on skype where he give`s more attention he want`s a payback - it`s he`s choice.
I and a big portion of all of us want to reward the developers!
donations is the only way and I hope you`ll see whats so important in donations.
Don't even think of removing the concept of donations.

I agree - BUT donations should not be solicited from this site.
Its getting ugly!!
Developers can link to their own sites and ask for donations from there.
Not from here. This can be controlled by the administrators.

ok guys... enough with all of that... Its fine to have links to accept donations... we always ask that the person donates to the board, but in some instances people would like to donate to the person that helped them.. we dont make posts asking for donations, we arent begging.. its there for an option to person, not mandatory.. we are here whether we get donations or not... end of discussion.. im locking this thread, its gone way off topic. sorry lego, gotta lock it..

lastly, it's sad that people have actually bought the rom...pathetic!

It's a disgrace that someone can make money for something that is readily available "Free" and not credit & royalty Kavana.
Wow, I can't believe people are doing this. But there is nothing we can do about it I figured because the Rom is not copyrighted material; therefore, anyone can sell it unless Kavana copy rights, which I believe can not be done since its a "cooked" rom rather then an official rom.
Somebody Has to Destroy This Guy
I swear to God, if something isn't done about this, and pronto, I am going to completely go postal on this guy.
So, for the feds out there reading this, if something happens to that guy, I probably did it. He deserves it, and good luck catching me. HAHAHA!
Haha he does deserve it, especially for doing something like this
you can report him through the ebay pages, but don't forget to use the "ask seller a question" button. I have sent a few to let him know we're not happy about it. He gets enough and maybe he'll take it down. Also, I told him I was going to contact every bidder to let them know where to get it for free.

Oh sounds good, I will do the same thing as well... I am going to let everyone know that they could download it from our website... It seems as if people are getting ripped off by buying a free program... Kavana and Ricky put together this for us for free therefore it should be this way... No one should try to sell it... If anyone has the right to sell the program it would be Ricky and Kavana.

Hello!I`m a memmber of this forum for some time and now for about 2 weeks i changed my device and go to other part of this forum but i noticed that almost all power users from here are waiting for donations to make something once all of this wasn`t like this what happend with that days?
I'm not power user or cooker but a donation isn't a must: you can do or not do it.
They spend a lot of time to do their works and if I want to donate some € for a good work I do it else I can use the SW without problem and w/o donation.

If people are not releasing something because they will only do so if they get donations they are violating Forum Rule 8. Feel free to report them.

Most of them make roms because they like to do it and they want to, that's it!
It's wrong to put in BIG words in the signature and everywhere else, as if the roms that they do, are really, really, really hard work.
What hard work? lol! Nobody force them to make roms...

As a modder I put in lots of time into my work. I release about 4-8 ROM variations a week. I also release some other minor stuff, packages for chefs and a few other things. There are plenty of sleepless nights for me. A little something in return is always nice.
Here is a little story and how end users can be greedy too.
A couple of weeks ago I had to sell my device for finacial reasons. I posted in my ROM thread that I will not be releasing a new ROM because I had to sell my phone. I came back online around 3 hours later to find about 140 private messages in my inbox. All but 3 asked for my ROM without a thanks and/or sorry to hear about your current situation. That got me very mad. So I changed how my ROMs were distributed.
All of my Lite and Super Lite ROMs, ROMs with no TF3D 2.1 or 2.5 or for Public use. All my TF3D2.X are for private users. To be a private user you have to be an active member of the community who comes in here and tries to help others. You are not a user who just downloads stuff, does not say thanks and then always complains about a few bugs. Or if you prefer you can make a donation. Lets say you would rather not bother helping others, don't have the time too or just want to say thanks to the modder with a little donation.
For myself I do not use TF3D and I take the time out to make something I do not use for myself for the end user so what is wrong with getting a little something in return for my time?
Every other thing I do on XDA is up for grabs for everyone...

Have you ever tried to make a ROM? To say it is not hard work is just plain stupid.
I do agree with you with the big buttons and what not...
You should be thankful that people on here like make ROMs. Have any idea what it would cost you to walk into a phone store and have something like this done, that's if even they know how too?
If it is not hard work then give it a shot and see how easy it is.
Some people are just so ungrateful...

Shocked. But if it's a donation...
I'm a chef, but I don't ask for any donation for releasing my ROMs.
I develop my ROMs for the people who wants it, and I'm happy to help you all to have a good OS and functional PDA.
However, my "Donation" link is always in my signature because if someone would like to help my hard work with his donation I'll be happy to accept it... but I'll continue to release my ROMs even if noone donates.
As for now, noone donated.. and I released a lot of versions of my ROMs, and I don't ask for any obligatory donation ^^
Chefs here doesn't ask for anything... donation is only for "giving" a simple "Thank You!" for the hard work we are doing!
Sincerely,
kholk.

That is very generous of the user. Even if he does not follow through with the device, that must be a great compliment to receive.
Possible solution
I don't know how xda feels about this but could they place something akin to google adwords into the topic so that the user who made the topic could get a piece of the pie. Of course xda would get a cut too. =p
This might be like the question "how much do you tip at a restaurant" because its very suggestive based on personal biases, etc. But at least there is that 18% base consideration. SO, I'm asking what is a typical donation made to the awesome devs who give us these ROMs to play around with? I want to contribute but I don't want to go so low as to be insulting and of course i'm not going to go too high either.
So for those that have donated and/or received donations, what is your opinion?
I've personally donated everything from $2 - $20
I really don't think there's a wrong answer, and I don't believe there's such a thing as "too small" of a donation. I don't see how anyone could be insulted by receiving a donation, even if it's paltry. Little amounts add up, and anyone would rather get 100 donations of $1 than 2 donations of $10.
Just as a heads up - most of the donations I've made have not been met with any thanks; only a few people have ever said anything. And no, it wasn't correlated to the amount I gave. I only bring it up to tell my experience.
I don't take it as an insult if I don't get thanks; devs are busy! That said, if someone thanks me for a donation, it certainly increases the probability that I'll send them repeat donations in the future.
i think 5 bucks is the perfect donation. won't be missed by you at all. and if you want recognition for your gift, then it's not a gift. i personally give donations in 5 dollar increments.
I'll let a new less developed rom for lack of words, bake. I'll then follow it for a while and when it seems like it cant go any further I'll flash it. If its up to snub and the dev is interacting with the thread then I'll send a donation. As far as amounts, its all up to you. There is no right or wrong amount. When I was over on the captivate side, there was a member that sent somewhere near $130 to a dev because his captivate bricked and he was going to stop developing an insane rom. Which he then bought a new phone and continued developing the rom. your guess is as good as mine If his phone actually bricked. based off his sincerity in interaction with the community, it probably did. Thats enough of my ranting, you get the point.
Thanks for the feedback guys. Good points all around.

Any donation is better than none. The devs will be thankful for whatever you can afford. I have seen donations as small as a single dollar all the way up to 100 dollars.

There is no minimum or maximum amount ...as mentioned above...
I've donated to several developers over the years...and generally spend $25.00 to $50.00....
It is money well spent....and also lets our devs know we appreciate the countless hours of work...
$50.00 is a good chunk of cash...but if a dev takes 24-48 hours to compile a rom....then they get $1.00 to $2.00 dollars per hour for that $50.00 given...
A buck an hour isn't much for all of that time away from Family and Friends to give us great work....
The more we give...the more we get...
Don't break the bank....but give what you can...and I promise it will come back to you....in many forms....g
