HTC Hermes Official Upgrade to 6.0? - 8525, TyTN, MDA Vario II, JasJam ROM Development

I'm on T-Mo in the US (who doesn't have the hermes/tytn) and I use an unlocked/unbranded hermes/tytn. Does anyone know if htc will release an official upgrade without having to go through a carrier?

I'm sure they will, seems as though pretty much everyone that can upgrade, will be.

Already discussed
This has already been announced by HTC.
However, I have it on good authority that there won't be any competing with the US carriers, that is to say, the carriers will be given the opportunity to release their ROMS on the carrier branded devices first, then HTC will release theirs.
It would actually be faster to release them from HTC first, but they don't want to anger their alliance partners.

Has HTC really announced this? Is there a link for it? Do you know the date when they're proposing to do this? I also have the Dash and upgraded it over the weekend. I actually don't see that many great improvements on it and the ones that are require that your Exchange Server be 2007, which my company is not moving to any time soon. We're still on 2003 sp2 and until they see a need for the change, they're likely to wait. However, there are some things that are definitely worth it.
I tried searching on HTC's website, but no luck.
Ok, sorry, i just found it using google. I saw it on engadget.

I talked with a tech support guy at AT&T and asked about the WM6 upgrade and he said they will direct people to the manufactures website to download the upgrade.

Official WM6 upgrade for TyTn is confirmed

The official HTC forum in Norway has confirmed that HTC will release an WM6 update for TyTn.
http://smartmobil.no/Article639.phtml
Sorry if this information is outdated
Its also on Qtek's swedish site that theres 5 HTC phones definitly getitng the official upgrade.. http://www.qtek.se/sweden/nyheter/senaste_nytt.aspx
I'm sure it has already been covered someplace else on the forums already mind.
Yea, i think it have been posted earlier today/this week. Says late summer, so im thinking july, august
well, this is great news.
let's hope the official update will have all problems fixed etc.
Cingular announced this a few weeks ago. Actually they confirmed WM6 for the 8525, blackjack AND treo 750. No release dates though, but engadget reported that the Blackjack update is probably going to be released the earliest.
official WM6
Hi
Its true that TyTn gone have an official WM6. But I’m not sure that they can delivery it in June or July because TyTn Europe couldn’t jet delivery a new Swedish MW5 Rom witch been known since months on xda-developers forum it was suppose to delivery in January 07. so I satisfying so long with current WM6 such as Black, LVSW etc.
regards
Yes, and the question is: witch one will be better? Or better suiteable...
I believe that the heroes here (we all are) investigated so much in this stuff that I will make this statement: HTC learn from XDA or you lose!!! Probably they've read all our treads and learnd from it.
Question: What do you think concerning this matter?
I think Cingular/HTC waits for the developers here to solve all the problems then they just copy and release what was done here Saves them time and money developing their own stuff. lol

hahaha, lol, man, its cool.
They will read your post and theirs faces will be red.
Its true though... even if an offical release becomes available for my Vario II, I'm not totally sure that I would upgrade giving tha I'm so happy with my LVSW WM6 install
i have the same sentiments... the roms here are almost "made to order" with features that majority of us agree on. I really can't imagine upgrading to an official "operator" or "manufacturer" rom unless there's a big boo boo in the one's i've installed from here (which there have been none I might add).

For sure, this is the development field of WM6.
Where are the going to find such gurus as here?
And for free....

I presonally prefer official ROMs over these user-made. WM6 roms I've tried do have more or less annoying bugs and unusefull software (xcept maybe for vanillas).
Original roms are (or at least should be) guaranteed to work on phones they have been made for.

Yes, advanced users here provide very much, but not that many actually developes the OS itself. They just add tweaks
and some freeware programs in it.
Oh and believe me, there are more gurus out there as well. This is just a forum with few experts and I doubt they
do this for a living, more like a hobby.
For free? How many times you have paid for a rom that operator releases?
And WM6 for free? I'd say that's piracy. You do pay for at least to upgrade from Windows XP to Vista?
When you buy a new computer that comes with an OS, you can't assume that you are entitled for a free upgrade
to OS when ever one is released.
I find the best thing this forum has to offer is free problem solving when it comes to bricking your device when
you either don't have a clue what you are doing or then something goes wrong while flashing your phone.
Hats off for the expert for that.

I found this comment interesting - and technically, it sounds true , so as not to diverse from the original post, I've started a new thread incase anyone else wonders what the legalities are... I don't know, I'm just wondering myself!

Great news...
I wonder if this is the reason the upgrade that was announced for Q1 still hasn't been released?

It is quite different thing for several reasons:
1. You can't go and buy an OS for a PocketPC or smartphone. Moreover, there is no and can't be a market for OSes for such devices: any build is device dependent. Show me that shop, and I'll buy Symbian or Linux for my TyTN!
2. When you buy a motherboard, you expect free BIOS update, especially if the original is buggy. For embedded devices (STB, modem, router, MP3 player etc) you do expect free firmware update, especially if the original one is buggy. No matter that the firmware is based on a Linux or even no OS. Windows Mobile is just a part of the firmware for our devices.
And, because Windows Mobile is always buggy, we do expect free updates!
Yes, you get free updates for BIOS as you do get for your phone. They are called ROM updates, which include fixes for radio, bootloader, OS fixes and stuff, but NOT a new OS.
As I see it, when a new OS has been released, it will be sold as a part of a new phone (OEM). As you can't purchase OEM versions you are stuck with the one you currently own, but you still do get free updates.
I would find it quite strange if you would be supported with brand new OS for no additional cost, since I believe the operators/manufacturers sure has to pay license fees for
new OS's.

Don't be so restricted, look wider!
Manufacturers get money from selling their devices. If they won't update the OS on just released models (and TyTN is far from EOL), they loose sales. Then they can give the same ROM to us, old owners, for no cost for them.
Then, they just announced new models on almost the same hardware. They have to use the new OS on them, so they have to make the new ROM for them. But if they won't update our ROMs with the new OS, they'd have to continue supporting two different lines of ROMs, instead of one with small very specific changes. It's additional cost. Or, drop support for recent devices, means loose their face and then sales of new devices.
Believe me, it's not free, and not for no cost from us. We paid enough to let them support us until EOL, and they earn enough from such upgrades.
Just like owners of other devices paid for all the firmware updates, we paid for our updates. The early we purchased the more we paid, BTW. An update with the new OS for recent devices for HTC is cheaper than no updates or updates with old OS. Even if the update would be less stable/useful than WM5 AKU3.5!

If Microsoft provides the upgrade to the OEM for free (which it looks like they are doing for WM6) and the OEM provides the upgrade to current owners for free (which it looks like they will do when they eventually do it), then it is not piracy.
Keep in mind that Microsoft really makes its money on its core products (currently Vista, Office 2007 and Exchange 2007). They REALLY want users (especially enterprise users) to upgrade to those new products. If you have a Windows Mobile device, you need WM6 on those devices to take full advantage of the new features in the core products, so why wouldn't they give it away? It will pay for itself twice or three times over. Besides, as other users have pointed out, WM6 is really just a bug fix maintenance release for WM5.0!

Any news on HTC version of WM6?

Does anyone know the latest or expected date for the generic HTC version of the WM6 rom?
cheers
I've called HTC Europe yesterday. They answer me the rom could be available at end of Juni or July.
(sorry for my english)
thanks for the reply, but bad news now July is getting mentioned :-(
cheers
Gus
ok, sorry. Where do you find this news ? (for my information)
umm, you gave me it??
I called them too... They confirmed that they 'hoped' that it would come out still in June... But no more specific information other then in the already existing press release in regard to WM6 in general on their website.
Frustrating, that the branded devices 'go first', and that it's merely a political issue not to release the upgrade yet...
If at least a 'decent' expectation would be set, one could choose between the unlocking and the WM6 version of T-Mobile...

Same thing, I called UK hotline and they mentioned somewhere between the last week of june and the first one of july.
It's very frustrating, I've got six I'd like to update and have already been down the unsuccessful road of using the T-Mobile ROM.
I wish HTC would get their skates on with this for people who have been brand loyal to HTC instead of buying a carrier specific model (Dash, etc).

S620 WM6?

Anyone heard anything more about the WM6 upgrades for the S620 that HTC was supposed to put out in the May/June timeframe? There's not much time left in that "frame" - was hoping to hear something by now. I'd prefer to not have to mess with trying to put the TMo ROM on there.
nop there has been no news at all keep checking this page:
http://www.europe.htc.com/support/software/
It's pretty much July. I'm expecting an update to come out yesterday.
Any other source, other than the website where we could have any more information?
Download link for T-Mobile's WM6 is here:

Anybody joined the HTC eClub?
I think they are gonna distribute the WM6 that way, since I can't register my Dash there I can't confirm. Can someone with a S620 sign up and see if the update is available now?
htc club
Hi i have joined the club, as i have a HTC s620. There have been no updates as of yet. I will be checking the site most days, so as soon as i hear anything i will post here
No updates other than some audio driver. This is really getting annoying.
Does anyone know if the VoIP feature will be included with this HTC release? (I'm talking about internet calling if nobody knows what I'm talking about.)
September!!!!!!
Below is an email I just got from HTC:
The Windows Mobile 6 update will roll out from June. The provisional date for the S620 is believed to be in September. We have no more accurate information than that and as it is a provisional schedule, it is possible that if any last minute problems are encountered in the final testing phase, it may be delayed.
Thank You for your enquiry. Should you have any other problem, please do not hesitate to call us. Your local number can be found at http://www.europe.htc.com/support/csbyphone.html

yeh i know thats why september is in bold in the email above.
Too bad there is no real competition on the market. Otherwise I would switch now. This is pissing the customer in the face.
I really love my S620 it's great hardware but not sure if I can hold out with WM5 too much longer.
S620 upgrade WM6
I called their support line on Tuesday (July 3) and the gentleman on the phone told me to expect the WM6 update around late July. I don't think they know for sure.
If I knew how to clean a rom of all that T-Mobile garbage I'd upgrade to WM6 using the T-Mobile rom.
So, just to amuse myself (and possibly others), I called HTC's hotline again, asking when WM6 comes out for the S620. The gentleman on the phone read me the email that was sent out to the phone support folks about WM6, and it went a little something like this:
"WM6 is a big OS upgrade, and all new HTC devices are using WM6, so basically HTC is tailoring the WM6 upgrades for each of their devices that support the upgrade. The Sprint MDA upgrade for WM6 came out 2 days, however, HTC will be releasing the WM6 upgrade for the S620 at the end of July, but no later than the middle of August."
<sarcasm>
In summary, HTC is aware of our concerns and doesn't contradict themselves.
</sarcasm>
Tell them T-mobile already has released WM6 and since the device is actually made by HTC its absolutely ridiculous that T-mobile can tailor the device quicker than HTC can.
The Cavalier is out this month so I can see alot of people ebaying their S620 and going for the much more powerful S630, probably what HTC are hoping anyway and why they are delaying the update. Furthermore they probably didn't sell as many of the Vox as they would have liked because people realised that the Excalibur/Caviliar form factor is so much nicer.

Yes but the T-Mobile WM6 ROM is crap.
I have it on my Dash. It is full of bugs and memory leaks. I am waiting to HTC to release the S620 WM6 ROM, then I'm going to buy an S620 and ditch my Dash.
Give them time to get it right and not hastily release a buggy ROM.
This is very disappointing. I hope this is not the case with all the said upgrades.
htc is delaying it for 1 reason because they what people to get fed up and by a new phone with wm6 built in. EXAMPLE: htc x7500 which has wm5 and htc x7501 has wm6. now you can already buy the x7501 at CompUSA for $899 just check if you dont believe me. but wm6 upgrade for x7500 won't be out untill september, makes no sense to me

WM6.5 official upgrade

Hi,
I thought I read somewhere HTC would release this upgrade for the tp2 today? Does anyone know if this is the case, and where to get it? I could not find anything on HTC's site re WM6.5.
Thanks.
Noone knows a thing. Everyone expects the release to be tomorrow. But since some providers are already releasing it today, who knows?
There isn't any hard evidence to say when it's going to come out.
This is on Microsoft's site, hope it makes things clearer

I asked htc tech support the 6.5 question. They responded in minutes. That's a response speed I certainly did not expect! Very good, though I'm sure they are fed up answering the same question...
They've advised they are currently dealing with the license packges from microsoft (whatever that means), but no release date was mentioned. Doesn't sound far away though.
Hi,
I have downloaded on HTC Support site an update for my TP2 from Orange.
The file is named RUU_Rhodium_Orange_FR-B2B_1.19.73.5_Radio_Rhodium_3.45.25.14_Signed_Ship.exe dating October 1st 2009....
Can anyone tell me if it's WM 6.5 ? Or just an update of my 1.19.73.3 (51489) WM6.1 ?
Thanks
EDIT : Stupid question after reading at Microsoft that the WM 6.5 availability date is not yet known....

Not possible. I know the Sales Representative for WM Norway. He told me. I have known the release dates for a quite long time now.
This is a message on HTC's website:
If you have a phone from Orange or another provider though HTC won't be providing the update (not too sure I have much faith in Orange to provide an update).

Availability
The HTC Touch2, Touch Diamond2 and Touch Pro2 with Windows Mobile 6.5 are available through selected operators across Europe now and will be rolling out to other regions in the coming months. The new HTC HD2 will be available soon with selected operators across Europe, before rolling out to other regions.
Notes to Editors
Customers with an original HTC Touch Diamond2 or Touch Pro2 will be able to update their phone via a new ROM which will be available from HTC’s website in the coming weeks at www.htc.com.

I just received it via email.
/\oops the person above me got it too. /\
Did anyone else wake up this morning to a 6.5 update?
No really, I woke this morning and slapped my TP2 to shut off my alarm to be alarmed myself, I had a Windows Update telling me to upgrade to Windows Mobile 6.5. I pretty much crapped myself at that point, it started off and gave my the orange installation screen, than after a minute or two it gave me an installation failed message.
After that I frantically tried running Windows Update but the connection timed out continuously. Just wondering if I am the only to receive this?
If this happens tomorrow I promise pictures, but was this an isolated incident? Or did everyone else get this via Microsoft?
As much as I want 6.5, I'm in no rush, the internet is on fire with "6.5 sucks" stories. I personally just want TouchFlo3D 2.5, that twitter integration is calling my name.
/firstpost
HTC sure plays spoil sport - with expectations.
(i know they never told they will release the update on 6th, but when a date was announced by microsoft the two companies should have worked together to release the updates for every phone in their list. This is so not good for their PR).
I really dont see how microsoft expects to win the mobile phone war. By the time they come out with WinMO 7, they will again be miles behind, if all they could manage was a shoddy job at winmo 6.5 which apparently has nothing great to talk about - except IE - and who uses it anyway!)
I stuck to winmo all these years, as 5 years ago it was a good business phone and it also supported bberry.
This year i finally split and bought a bberry as there was no update for TP2 coming for months. - again, its a function of marketing - keep customers happy. I know there has never been a promise by htc on integrating bberry software on winmo, yet, after a point, people start expecting.
Somehow these giants just dont get it when it comes to customer service and marketing. Microsoft has definitely lost a customer the day i split and bought a second phone which is a pure bberry. The next upgrade, i will skip winmo entirely and look at the offerings from android and webos...
live long and prosper microsoft - if u can!....
T-Mobile Germany released the update today:
http://www.t-mobile.de/shop/handy/0,4855,2963-_16608-0-8949;CNC-4,00.html
Yes, i've found it too. After uownloading and unpacking i got a file named "RUU_Rhodium_S_TMO_DE_1.85.111.1_Radio_Rhodium_4.49.25.05_Signed_Ship.exe". With 7zip i've seen, the date of the NBH is 17th of September, don't know which version they used.
But i don't want to have this (i guess) buggy and extremly branded system on my device. I'll wait for an unbranded HTC-release or one from O2(DE), these are nearly unchanged too.

Typical O2 UK - Jellybean ETA

I read that jellybean was rumoured to be released to other network providers by the end of this week so..
I decided to check with an "o2 Guru" if they could tell me when Jellybean will be rolled out to the O2 branded HoX
As expected they could not answer my query - see below for the chat
You're through to Guru Steve.
Steve: Hi I'm Steve. How can I help?
Andy: Hi steve
Steve: Hello.
Andy: I was hoping you can tell me when Jellybean firmware will start to roll out on my HTC One X handset?
Steve: I'll check the info for you.
Andy: Thanks
Steve: Whenever a new software is launched by the manufacturers, we investigate and make sure that there is no issues in it which may affect the phone. Once it's done, it's shared for all our customers on our website. As of now, the investigation isn't done, so you'll have to wait for a few weeks until it's launched by us. Your patience and understanding is appreciated.
Andy: What stage are you guys currently at with testing? Do you have a ETA for the rollout to O2 customers?
Steve: I'm sorry this done by our software engineers and there is no exact timescale but once it is released on o2 you'll surely get the update about this.
Andy: The update has been released by HTC for unbranded devices and other service providers, o2 are always behind the pack with updates which is frustrating, Do you know how I can unbrand the device?
Steve: Yes the HTC has released for phones which are not network locked. Just to inform you that we don't want our customers to face the difficulty after upgrading the software that's the reason it is first tested and then it is released to network phones.
Andy: If the handset was not branded by O2 then I could flash the generic one that was released by HTC - Some customers have an idea what they are doing when it comes to software for their devices, I think it would be good to have an option to opt in for branding or opt out for development purposes
Andy: This is making me think twice about renewing my contract next summer - I would rather be paying money for a device I have full control over than to be treated like just another consumer
Steve: I respect your decision but I hope you can also understand my limitations as software are released by the manufacturer and then it is sent to service provider.
Andy: Yes I can understand you cannot answer any of my questions as your role is limited to a service desk and you can only give out information given by each division within your organisation. This is not directed at you personally, O2 can never clarify these things - your software team should give out better communication to you guys on the front end
Steve: Yes I can understand and I'll also surely forward your feedback to our relevant team.
Andy: LOL, Ok Im sure that will help me - Goodbye
So still no answers for O2 branded devices - My next move is to approach HTC and ask if they can tell me how to SuperCID
Don't expect any better help from HTC UK.But good luck in your quest.
I think tc was kinda rude, it's pretty obvious this call center guys don't know anything..
In fact most companies are hiring external help, so they know even LESS about the situation
Sent from my HTC One X using Tapatalk 2
The solution is simple:
Bye bye htc and scamming branded phone companies, buy your handset unbranded without a contract!
