Hello all, I am completely new to this so please be patient.
Yes, I did indeed use the search feature on the site plus Google to try and solve this issue prior to creating this thread. Unfortunately I cannot find a solution after a couple hours of scouring.
Here is the situation:
I have TWO cingular 8525's, I've had both since April 5th and they have both worked flawlessly. I decided to upgrade one today, following MrVanx's tutorials on upgrading. The upgrades/flashing/etc.. went flawlessly without issue. The phone seems to work fine except for one issue that is really bugging me.
It is stuck with the EDGE's E as the connection, adn wont attatch to G (GRPS, 3G). I double checked with my other phone to ensure that G was available and indeed it was. After some reading I found out that by default Black 2.0 came with GPRS disabled via HTweakC. I went in and enabled it, but still the E held and G was nowhere to be found.
After a couple of soft resets I saw that initially the G appears but then disapears within a second of booting in and is replaced with the E.
So then I tried messing with the Band tab, initially it wouldnt let me change anything.. After some detective work I discovered it was because of HTweakC.. I disabled HTweakC's ability to enable GPRS and that enabled me to change the band..
I got it to be where it at least tries to connect to 3g/GPRS instead of EDGE but it just sits there.. not connecting.
Any idea? I'm pretty close to just restoring factory defaults

Deciding between E/G/U/3G, etc is actually the radio ROM's job. The OS just gets that info from the radio for displaying it.
Are you running the same radio rom on both phones? The Black installer won't update the radio -- only the OS/ExtROM.
If you go into Settings -> System -> Device Information, look for the "Radio version" number. See if those match. If they don't -- that's your problem. If they do, well, something else is going on.
Have you tried a normal Hard Reset on the troublesome phone yet?
Actually I upgraded the Radio on the one that I installed black on.. to 1.38.00.10..

Switch the device off. Press and hold the Left SOFT KEY and Right SOFT KEY, and at the same time, use the stylus to press the RESET button at the bottom of your device. You will be presented with a menu saying 'press R to reset, X to exit'. If you press R, your device will be set back to factory default settings.
Hard Reset will delete all data you have put on the device: Programs, Settings, Mail, SMS, MMS, etc., so be careful and make a backup before doing this.
After a hard reset, you will have a complete clean new install of Windows Mobile on your device.

I do that and it just takes me to the bootloader also, wont that just reset to factory defaults anyway?
edit: nevermind, i was pressing the wrong 'softkeys' but it still says it'll restore to factory defaults which i dont really want to do just yet..
change radio to 1.34 or the new 1.40 see if that helps.

same thing is happening with 1.40.. im gonna try the latest official cingular whatever.. and if that doesnt work then just restore my factory defaults
ahhh damn, hard reset and restore to factory defaults doesnt actually restore to factory defaults.. son of a b*tch.

The E indicates Edge and is what SHOULD be displayed if your network offers Edge (Enhanced GPRS) services over GSM. Your earlier OS probably didn't have the capability to show E and simply indicated GRPS.
However, if your network is 3G and you're not connecting on 3G, then maybe you should check in Phone / Options / Bands to make sure you have it set to Auto, so that it knows to access the 3G network.
I think you are seeing "normal" operation. I am on Black 2 OS with the 1.40 Radio and all working fine.

Hi,
I guess i may not understand your question but this is what i know:
factory WM5 ROM shows G or U, G for GPRS up to class 10 and EDGE and U for HSDPA if available.
Since this icon set is obviously wrong, this issue was fixed on WM6 (there is also a CAB for WM5).
All i am trying to say is your phone is now working properly and showing E for EDGE that by the way is better than GPRS.
Double check that 3G is available in your area, your old WM5 phone must show U (UMTS)
on the WM6 phone, the icon should be 3G and H when data is in use.
Sorry if i got it wrong but you don't say with icon is showing in 3G state.
As someone said before, the OS is not responsible for this but the radio. Please be sure 3G is available in your area.
a speed check will clarify this,
GPRS around 64KB/s
EDGE around 256KB/s
HSDPA 1.8MB/s usually around 800KB/s
I just flashed my 8525 to black 2.0 yesterday and had been using radio 1.38 for a while before that. Where I live is on the edge of a 3G area. I get GPRS and EDGE at home. With previous tweaks I used to get G around the house showing on the screen, but it was really Edge only the phone couldn't show it.
Black seems to be able to show G, E and 3G labels as directed by the radio.
Now with Black 2.0 I'm seeing G briefly, then it cycles to E which is correct in my area. I drove into the 3G area and the phone correctly switched to display 3G. I'm pretty sure that you are OK and are just getting edge where you are. Since G and E don't cause the higher battery use like 3G does, you should be good to go.
Ooooh I see.. So the G i was receiving before (while in wm5) was actually EDGE and if I saw a U before it would be 3G?
and now i'll be seeing E for EDGE and 3G for 3G, etc?

yup. also the 3G icon will change to H (HSDPA)=3G when data is in use.

Back when I had the base Cingular WM5 rom on my phone I was able to talk on the phone and have my data connection going at the same time. Since upgrading to WM6, XDA Live .20 and Black 2.0 I have not been able to get that feature back. To make a call it has to disconnect me. Then once I get off the phone call the data connection connects again. I tried the Allways On option in HTweakC that came with the WM6 releases but that doesn't appear to be what I am looking for. Does anyone else notice this or have a fix?
My device maintains a data connection whilst I am on voice calls. I receive emails fine whilst talking. Its on Black 2.0

yes.. try your phone and data in a 3G area... voice and data only works in 3G not edge......
I have tried it in a 3G area, right by my work I have 4 bars of 3G. But everytime I try to call or get a call it always closes the data connection.
try using bandswitch and manually fixing the phone to 3G only.. just to make sure its really on 3G and not secretly on Edge..
When I select the WCDMA Network I get the 3G Icon, when I select the GSM Network I get the E Icon. So I think it knows the difference between 3G and E just fine. I leave the "band" setting set to Auto.
BTW I am using radio rom 1.38.00.10 now, but even when I had the factory 1.16.00.00 I still had this problem with WM6. It only seemed to work with WM5. Another strange thing, in the phone app it says UMTS Cingular, just another sign it is actually using UMTS (3G).
Its just so annoying if I am online doing anything, slingbox, browsing the web, then when I want to make a call, it usually fails the first time while it disconnects then it goes through
Another odd thing probably just part of the new radio rom, when online and it starts to load data it switches to an H icon, I guess for HPDSA or whatever that abbreviation is.
Are you sure its really closing the data connection? Ignore the icons. Send yourself some emails and see if they arrive whilst on voicecall.

i was saying to do this as a test, just to make sure the phone wasnt doing something funny... just some basic troubleshooting to help find the problem...
kinda like if your car wont start.. there are different problems that could cause it, maybe its out of gas, maybe the fuel filter is clogged, maybe the battery is dead.. different things can cause similiar problems, its better to eliminate all possibilities
I tested it this morning, data and voice works fine at the same time. Called voicemail and then opened up IE and was able to load several pages while on the call.
Edit, where are you located? Is it possible there is a problem with the network there? Try downgrading back to the Cingular software and see if that works.
Shogunmark, I figured thats what you were getting at, and I tried all the options I could that would give me a connection to the network, but I still couldn't do data and telephone at the same time. Everytime I was connected online then went to place a data call it would have to disconnect me first. I tried doing a phone call then connecting online, but nothing would load.
I guess I could try going back to WM5, but I have hard spl 1.4 on so I gotta do a little rom editing of the cingular rom to get WM5 back I guess. didn't realize it was that complicated to go back to factory after installing hard spl.
Im surprised no one else has this issue. Its been like this for me pretty much as long as I have had WM6, so I doubt its the cingular network.

not at all, just drop a WM5 NBH into a folder with CustomRUU and use autodetect. it'll flash quite happily
How would I take the HTC Cingular rom (found here, http://www.america.htc.com/support/8525/software-downloads.html) and get the WM5 NBH? Or will I have to use another WM5 version?
Just chiming in to say I don't have this problem and I've used both those roms and still using WMXL 0.20 now and use data and calling all the time. I am using the same radio ROM as you now too and it still works ok.
What apps do you have installed? anything that would end the data connection for some reason? Maybe put a list of apps and customisations you've made since installing the WM6 rom you have?
You could also try it with a blank WM6 rom, manually add the data connection settings and try and see if that works? Just to eliminate 3rd party apps and thing's you've changed.
The only other similar thing i can think of is I do remember there was an issue where data would disconnect when changing between 3G and EDGE. I don't remember who had this problem or why but it could be related.
Let us know how it goes?

Use this guide to go back to the Cingular ROM.
http://www.mrvanx.myzen.co.uk/hermes_guide/Downgrade/index.html
Here are the apps I have
Resco File Explorer
Core Media Player
Slingbox
Don't run to many apps on my ppc as you can see. I mainly just use it to stream media from home (orb, slingbox), and internet connection sharing. I'll probably find some time tonight to revert back to WM5 and let you know what I find.
Well I just flashed back to the cingular rom, and guess what it's working again, can talk on the phone and be on the internet at the same time. So weird. well I guess I will try going back to Black 2.0 and see what happens.
Kanos,
Your problem is definitely not WM6. As in WM5, I can concurrently browse the internet during a voice call. As Mark said, there may be other issues specific to your case -- you'll have to methodically eliminate one-by-one... you'll have to decide if the process is really worth the time yourself.
FWIW:
Radio 1.34
HERMES 200 HT625 (in use since 7/4/2006)
Network: Manual (Taiwan UMTS)
Band: Auto/GSM(900+1800)+UMTS(2100)
Cheers
I believe it's not truly a problem with WM6, as people obviously have gotten it to work. I will definitely look into it more and keep you all updated on what I find. Right now I am still on WM5 but I will flash back to WM6, no apps installed, right after a fresh hard reset and see if it works or not for me.
I decided to try LVSW this time. Guess what it worked, I was able to both data and phone at the same time. Next test will be to install Black 2.0 again and see what happens.
My theory is this, I had XDALive .10 and maybe that version had this issue, then when I upgraded to .20 it carried over somehow and then carried over to black 2.0. Then once I went back to WM5 it reset everything. Don't ask me how, but obviously I have a lot more flashing to do to test this theory.
the imate site on wm5 proclaim this as a problem. when u r receiving data at a specific point in time u cannot receive a call.
the aust. telstra latest release says the upgrade fixes this.
to bypass going back to wm5 i just used the xda radio only upgrade to try and bypass. this was i believe only when receiving data and a call inwards simultaneously.
otherwise i have never had ur problem n likely a flash issue.
there is another i have noticed in recent releases is activesync now asks to allow data to be received when activesync this is a 4.5 change so perhaps looking for this setting may also help ur simultaneous data issue. just a guess but it might have been easy to not allow this when u upgraded to wmg which rwquired 4.5 to do this.
anyway goodluck with it.
Hello everyone.
My first post here, although I have been an avid reader for a while now. I'd like to say thanks to vp3G and others for the excellent cooked ROMS.
My question: I just started using the new official WM6 ROM from AT&T. My fiance and myself both use AT&T 8525's, and I loaded the new ROM on both of our phones. Now, we can be sitting right next to one other on our couch, and her phone will read as having full bars with the 3G icon to the left of them. Then I'll look at my phone and I have full bars with the E icon next to them.
Would anybody here have any idea as to why? Identical phones, with identical ROMs and identical radio versions, yet she gets 3G while I only seem to get Edge, with the phones sitting side-by-side on the coffee table.
I'm confused on this one ...any ideas? Thanks a bunch in advance for any help and for the great site!
-D.

Yes, they are the same. We bought the phones a few months back and both shipped with one of the new AT&T SIM cards with the 3G logo on it. I used to get sporadic 3G at home with the older radio versions, but she has always had rock solid 3G on hers. It's weird, I know.

I'm feeling kind of silly right now...I'm not sure what you're referring to. I open up the com manager in the lower right of the today screen, and then the left soft key becomes a "settings" tab. Opening that just takes me to the phone setting menu (Phone, Services, Network, etc...).
I haven't made any changes to the ROM, just using what it had available.

Ok. Go to Start-Settings-Phone
See if there is a tab on the bottom that says Band...
If you do then make sure that it says Auto on both.
If not then check out the hermes wiki and go to tweaking the hermes registry...
If your are using the 'official' att rom, and if it's anything like the old roms, then the band tab will not be there...
I recently updated my rom to Miri's WM6.5 21869, from my default WM 6, and, the internet is just horrible. Youtube, takes as long as dialup to load, searching for images, it takes a good 30 seconds to a minute to load a page of results, and it's just all bull. On my default rom i would have 4 minute youtube vids downloaded in 30 seconds, image results in 3-5 seconds.
Any idea what i can do to help this? I want to keep wm6.5, not necessarily miri's wm6.5 so if you know of another ROM that is gprs/3g speedy then by all means point me in the right direction.
Im with optus prepaid, and my orginal rom was an unlocked telstra one.
Also I've heard that a newer radio version makes a difference, although i have not been able to navigate my way to an upgrade link. current version is 1.14......
A correct solution will receive a donation, for enough to buy a 6 pack of beer (if you use paypal)

Did you check if the phone might be set to only use GPRS for data services? Head to the settings tab, hit "Communications" and see if there is an option called "3G"! It has to be set to "auto" mode! If it's set to GSM, it will only use GPRS which is slooooooooooow.
And if that is in fact the solution, don't donate the money to me but to xda-developers!
Still no luck I didn't have an auto mode but i switched it to ON haha, but unfortunately it didn't seem to make a difference in download speed

With a G it's no wonder it's so slow... It's like a 56K modem!!!
When you set up the new ROM, did it recognize the carrier and run through the carrier specific configuration thingie after flashing?
Maybe there is something misconfigured so it won't use HSDPA even if it's available... Could you go to Settings -> Connections -> Connections and tell me what kind of connections are listed there?
Also, check the following: Settings -> Connections -> Advanced Network
In the drop down list, what does it say? It shouldn't be set to "Disable"!
Hi,
I am new and just installed Android ProjectAndroid2.2Froyo.112210 on my HTC Touch Pro 2 phone. Once I had the 3G connection with the Dutch KPN working but after a reboot of the phone, I can not manage to get it working again. Wifi and BT are ok except the 3G connection.
Did a 'to default reset' and tried several APN setting but none of them turn the 3G connection back to live.
Does anyone have a solution?
Thanks in advance,
Rick.
Does the cell radio function? In other words, can you make/receive calls/texts?
If yes, then the APN settings are a good thing to look at - also, do you have a 3g icon with up/down arrows next to the signal strength meter?
One other good question to ask - does your provider require a proxy to access the 'net?
Yes, I can call and recieve calls. Also sms messages are working fine.
The only thing which is missing is the G3 data connection icon and actually the datalink.
No, the provider does not need a proxy setting. As I wrote in my start, I had it working good but just after a reboot without any changes on the APN parameters, it didnt come back again.
Thanks for your reply Arrrghhh!

Hrm. May want to try with a new/fresh data.img. If you rename your existing data.img, a new one will be created during boot. See if it helps... unfortunately deleting that file has fixed so many odd issues, it's not even remotely funny.
Okay, I will give it a go when comming back from my trip next week.
I did remove all files a couple of times and re-installing the Android software but maybe not all data has been removed? At least it did not solve the problem.
By the way, could it be caused by having the system on the SD card rather than in the phone memory? And could it be related to the type of phone selected during boot time? I am using the HTC Touch Pro 2 and not selecting the Tilt-2 but the ?210 (forgot the name and the phone is off) due to the fact that the keyboard is wrong with the tilt-2 option.

Ehm, you can wipe your SD card all the times you want, but this won't solve anything if the APN is wrong or if your carrier requires user/pass, proxy or whatever else.
So first go check you actual APN configuration in WinMo, get a paper, copy it down piece by piece, then get back to Xdandroid and modify/create a new one, checking all the settings are properly set.
Have a nice trip.
@Wind,
your right but again, it has been working with a certain set of parameters but just after a reboot without any change on APN, the phone did not want to reconnect on 3G.
Thanks for your wishes. Will get back when I return.
do not use this version modules-2.6.27.46-01232-gb7033df.tar.gz , zImage-2.6.27.46-01232-gb7033df, change it.
@muziling,
I did update the phone with your advised release and re-started the phone again. No result. Due to low battery the phone went down and had to re-charge. When the battery was full again, turned on the phone and guess what, I had a 3G icon.
Just to be sure that it was not a lucky shot (but I was thinking it) I decided to reboot the phone again and ships.... the 3G icon did not show up again.
No change inwhatever parameter was made during the reboot session. This means that the 3G performance is intermittend and depeding on a certain condition which I do not know how to find. Any suggestions?
Thanks in advance.
I have a similar problem. After a fresh install, the 3G connection works exactly the first time, I boot into android. After a reboot, the 3G connection mostly does not work. I cannot figure out, which conditions have to be met, to get 3G working. Its just pure luck to me.
btw, I have a german rhodium.
try this version, it works perfect on my rhod400

OK, Firstly, does anyone else have the Defy on the Three network and is it working alright for you??
I'm just trying to figure out whether this is a phone problem or a network issue. Basically I'll unlock the phone, go onto google, search for something and that's when the wait starts, it's really weird, I'll have full 3G signal, and neither of the little traffic arrows will do anything, which makes me think it's not a network issue. Absolutely all network traffic locks up, including gmail, market etc
But then if I make a phone call and hang up it will start working again fine. All I can think is that it's just a little software glitch in my phone. Does anyone know if Motorola will send me a ROM update/repair tool for the phone because I'm guessing it's something to do with that, or even try rolling back to Eclair 2.1 to try that. And yes, before you ask, I've tried many times doing a full wipe/factory reset and it makes no difference.
I've quadruple checked all my APN settings for Three which don't even have usernames or passwords and even checked the settings were correct in the secret service menu. Also when I had the problems I ran a ping test (in the secret menu *#*#4636#*#*) and they all returned "failed could not find ip"
It's just so weird how random it is, I can't work it out. Maybe the defy really isn't compatible with three.
If anyone's got any ideas please please please leave info below.
One other thing I forgot to mention is that the defy was previously locked to Tmobile(uk) and was unlocked using a simple unlock code, no hacking or modding involved
Hi mate,
I've been using my defy on 3 UK with no problems since Jan. I've been on eclair the whole time. Currently the 2.51 stock.
