Back when I had the base Cingular WM5 rom on my phone I was able to talk on the phone and have my data connection going at the same time. Since upgrading to WM6, XDA Live .20 and Black 2.0 I have not been able to get that feature back. To make a call it has to disconnect me. Then once I get off the phone call the data connection connects again. I tried the Allways On option in HTweakC that came with the WM6 releases but that doesn't appear to be what I am looking for. Does anyone else notice this or have a fix?
My device maintains a data connection whilst I am on voice calls. I receive emails fine whilst talking. Its on Black 2.0

yes.. try your phone and data in a 3G area... voice and data only works in 3G not edge......
I have tried it in a 3G area, right by my work I have 4 bars of 3G. But everytime I try to call or get a call it always closes the data connection.
try using bandswitch and manually fixing the phone to 3G only.. just to make sure its really on 3G and not secretly on Edge..
When I select the WCDMA Network I get the 3G Icon, when I select the GSM Network I get the E Icon. So I think it knows the difference between 3G and E just fine. I leave the "band" setting set to Auto.
BTW I am using radio rom 1.38.00.10 now, but even when I had the factory 1.16.00.00 I still had this problem with WM6. It only seemed to work with WM5. Another strange thing, in the phone app it says UMTS Cingular, just another sign it is actually using UMTS (3G).
Its just so annoying if I am online doing anything, slingbox, browsing the web, then when I want to make a call, it usually fails the first time while it disconnects then it goes through
Another odd thing probably just part of the new radio rom, when online and it starts to load data it switches to an H icon, I guess for HPDSA or whatever that abbreviation is.
Are you sure its really closing the data connection? Ignore the icons. Send yourself some emails and see if they arrive whilst on voicecall.

i was saying to do this as a test, just to make sure the phone wasnt doing something funny... just some basic troubleshooting to help find the problem...
kinda like if your car wont start.. there are different problems that could cause it, maybe its out of gas, maybe the fuel filter is clogged, maybe the battery is dead.. different things can cause similiar problems, its better to eliminate all possibilities
I tested it this morning, data and voice works fine at the same time. Called voicemail and then opened up IE and was able to load several pages while on the call.
Edit, where are you located? Is it possible there is a problem with the network there? Try downgrading back to the Cingular software and see if that works.
Shogunmark, I figured thats what you were getting at, and I tried all the options I could that would give me a connection to the network, but I still couldn't do data and telephone at the same time. Everytime I was connected online then went to place a data call it would have to disconnect me first. I tried doing a phone call then connecting online, but nothing would load.
I guess I could try going back to WM5, but I have hard spl 1.4 on so I gotta do a little rom editing of the cingular rom to get WM5 back I guess. didn't realize it was that complicated to go back to factory after installing hard spl.
Im surprised no one else has this issue. Its been like this for me pretty much as long as I have had WM6, so I doubt its the cingular network.

not at all, just drop a WM5 NBH into a folder with CustomRUU and use autodetect. it'll flash quite happily
How would I take the HTC Cingular rom (found here, http://www.america.htc.com/support/8525/software-downloads.html) and get the WM5 NBH? Or will I have to use another WM5 version?
Just chiming in to say I don't have this problem and I've used both those roms and still using WMXL 0.20 now and use data and calling all the time. I am using the same radio ROM as you now too and it still works ok.
What apps do you have installed? anything that would end the data connection for some reason? Maybe put a list of apps and customisations you've made since installing the WM6 rom you have?
You could also try it with a blank WM6 rom, manually add the data connection settings and try and see if that works? Just to eliminate 3rd party apps and thing's you've changed.
The only other similar thing i can think of is I do remember there was an issue where data would disconnect when changing between 3G and EDGE. I don't remember who had this problem or why but it could be related.
Let us know how it goes?

Use this guide to go back to the Cingular ROM.
http://www.mrvanx.myzen.co.uk/hermes_guide/Downgrade/index.html
Here are the apps I have
Resco File Explorer
Core Media Player
Slingbox
Don't run to many apps on my ppc as you can see. I mainly just use it to stream media from home (orb, slingbox), and internet connection sharing. I'll probably find some time tonight to revert back to WM5 and let you know what I find.
Well I just flashed back to the cingular rom, and guess what it's working again, can talk on the phone and be on the internet at the same time. So weird. well I guess I will try going back to Black 2.0 and see what happens.
Kanos,
Your problem is definitely not WM6. As in WM5, I can concurrently browse the internet during a voice call. As Mark said, there may be other issues specific to your case -- you'll have to methodically eliminate one-by-one... you'll have to decide if the process is really worth the time yourself.
FWIW:
Radio 1.34
HERMES 200 HT625 (in use since 7/4/2006)
Network: Manual (Taiwan UMTS)
Band: Auto/GSM(900+1800)+UMTS(2100)
Cheers
I believe it's not truly a problem with WM6, as people obviously have gotten it to work. I will definitely look into it more and keep you all updated on what I find. Right now I am still on WM5 but I will flash back to WM6, no apps installed, right after a fresh hard reset and see if it works or not for me.
I decided to try LVSW this time. Guess what it worked, I was able to both data and phone at the same time. Next test will be to install Black 2.0 again and see what happens.
My theory is this, I had XDALive .10 and maybe that version had this issue, then when I upgraded to .20 it carried over somehow and then carried over to black 2.0. Then once I went back to WM5 it reset everything. Don't ask me how, but obviously I have a lot more flashing to do to test this theory.
the imate site on wm5 proclaim this as a problem. when u r receiving data at a specific point in time u cannot receive a call.
the aust. telstra latest release says the upgrade fixes this.
to bypass going back to wm5 i just used the xda radio only upgrade to try and bypass. this was i believe only when receiving data and a call inwards simultaneously.
otherwise i have never had ur problem n likely a flash issue.
there is another i have noticed in recent releases is activesync now asks to allow data to be received when activesync this is a 4.5 change so perhaps looking for this setting may also help ur simultaneous data issue. just a guess but it might have been easy to not allow this when u upgraded to wmg which rwquired 4.5 to do this.
anyway goodluck with it.

Guys--you won't believe this, but the problem is it's the NETWORK! If you have a GSM/GPRS XDA II running on T-mobile or Cingular in the US and you've been having problems with the gprs disconnect you're not alone.
I've spoken repeatedly to Dubai--they know it's an issue and they're working n a fix but don't have a time frame yet. I've downgraded to the original ROM and I've cooked the ROM using 1.40 and downgradng the caller ID files to the 1.17 build to eliminate the gprs disconnect problem.
NOTE: if you use a goodlink or other push technology this is a pretty good fix, but the problem still comes and goes because the problem is the NETWORK!
I get a t-mobile tech I know to level with me today on the phone. The fact is, the 'internet.3.voicestream.com answering modem disconnected please check your settings or reset your device' message is occuring because there are intermitent problems on the t-mobile (and he claims cingular as well) networks do to infrastructure damage. It seems some of the e-mail servers and answering modems were clustered in the south. T-mobile knows this but isn't talking about it.
So, before you strip your device down again and rebuild from scratch (AGAIN!), soft reset. Use the phone and disconnect the gprs. Try again later. The network may be up then.
Damn, I wish they had told me that before. I've spent weeks and days rebuilding this device with different ROM versions.
Right now I'm back on ROM version 1.02 that shipped with the IMATE (PDA2K_CDLWWWE_11222_169_10200_ship.exe you can download that fromt he IMATE web site or from onthe gosolutions via FTP) device because that's what certified with the goodlink license. Can't hurt. Then I can yell at goodlink too.
But so you know the issue looks network related!
oh good grief......I was seriously about to do something like that and decided to check the forum out one last time before i did.....and am I grateful that I did!!!!
I used to be able to connect to the TMobile GPRS network pretty ok...now I have to either toggle the flight mode or soft reset it every time just to get it to connect.....no amout of tweaking the connections or even the clubimate CAB file have made no difference....I have the 1.40 and the radio is at 1.12...and as I mentioned, it was working last week...and now its this...I didn't want to upgrade to the radio 1.13 and after seeing this,I am going to wait......I have had enough of my PDA2K crashing on me..... :x
A few people have been having the same issue as me with more recent AKU3.* ROMs, wherein the radio features (GSM/UMTS,GPRS etc) - cease to function. Symptoms include the connectivity icons becoming non-responsive to stylus-press, and phone calls starting, but no call being made (silence) - and calls refusing to end.
This has been driving me nuts, and just when I think a new ROM (CE or Radio) has solved it, it re-appears. I have been playing around with everything I can to either diagnose, or solve this problem, and this is what I have found:
The phone only locks up, when handover between GSM and UMTS has occurred several times. I use the Hutchison 3 network in .au, and the coverage in Sydney is a bit spotty - hence the frequent handover to 'Roaming', and back again. Now that I have disabled the GSM functionality (i.e. just use UMTS, in the 'band' menu in 'Phone' settings) - I haven't had a single phone lockup.
To the other people having this issue: does this pattern of use sound familiar? I.e. is your main carrier UMTS, roaming to GSM? I'd like some feedback to see if we can isolate this, or if this solution works for other people
Hey
Had this problem many times with all kind of roms.
Usually the icons would react to clicks, but internet wouldn't work and also calling.
When I would turn on flight mode, the right icon (your reception) would change and gets a little cross (telling its disabled). But the left one would still be stuck on G/U as connected. It would take a min or 2 before it finally updates to a little cross saying its disabled. Then I can disable flight mode again and the phone would work (most of the time)
I live around 70 km from my work and I drive back and fort every day. In the car my universal is in the charger and I have always live messenger connected and AS for email.
during this trip my reception is lost twice, besides that it switches a couple of times from Umts to Gprs.
I've updated my phone to 1.14 radio en helmi 3.5 aku rom. And have experienced a couple of times what you discribed. The 3G and G/U icons wouldn't react to the stylus and the phone seems to be stuck. The device itself still works. But I have to soft reset to get it going again.
So after reading your story I can say this scenario refers to my experience.
I'm gonna try your solution from off today and let you know
I have only GPRS here and this problem happens to me with all AKU3.x versions even with different radios (1.09 -> 1.14.10) ... I still believe it has nothing to do with ONLY hand-over ... I reverted back to AKU2 and it never happened since then
Same here....
I have similar experiences with UMTS and GSM handover issues. I observed that sticking to one band (in my case GSM since it is more prevalent than the other in countries I go to!) is the way to go. When in M1, I got dropped problematic calls and my SMS were delayed but when I stuck to GSM only then everything was back to normal. I have been trying out the new Radio Rom 1.14.10 with Helmi AKU3.5 for 3 days now and am not having handover issues! Could be the Radio Rom or the Rom itself but if it acts up again then I know what to do then! Hope this helps!!!
The problem is in rilgsm.dll file.
I can tell that it is solved in crossbow.

would replacing the file in the current aku3 roms with an older one fix it?
i myself dont have the problem but allot of 3.2 wizard testers do.
Good to know, that I'm not the only one with this problem. I have seen this behaviour in all ROMs, not just the AKU3 and can confirm that it iseems to be related to the switchover between UMTS and GSM.
It also only seems to happen only when you have the internet connection open, which will always be the case when you use push-mail.
I had similar problems with the MDA III, whish I used before. Maybe it will get fixed in Crossbow - but by then we'll likely all have new phones.
^^
My internet connection is also always active. I have now switched from AUTO network to WCDMA (umts).
Going to see if this helps. After that I'll try the GSM band to see if it makes a difference
But it's something my device always had problems with, so I guess it's ROM independent
I'd like to see if that rilgsm.dll can be re-used. Unfortunately, the coverage of UMTS in the area where I live is far too spotty to be comfortable with pinning the radio band to UMTS.
However, I'm interested in your thoughts.
I must say that I agree with biso007. This problem started to occur when I upgraded to AKU3 roms. Before, I was on AKU2 with the exact same radio rom (I didn't flash it!) and never had any issue. Combined with mamaichs comment that it is related to a DLL file, I would say that the problem is indeed not related to a radio-ROM but to the AKU ROM.
Just my 2 cents....
I had same problems with Radio lockups on my UNIVERSAL. I've tried different ROMs with no luck. BUT after changing my Radio rom back to latest from T-mobile (1.10.03) everything back to normal- all day driving with GPRS on - no lockups at all!!! 100% solution is..... use old radio rom.
Would not mind downgrading...
I have lockup issues as well... if this really helps, I will downgrade the Radio ROM without hesitation. Where can I find thsi Radio ROM; is it on the xda-dev FTP site?
Thanks,
-Ireneus
Hi All!
Yes, this issue is the most annoying among all other issues, and it makes UNI impossible to use as the phone for business communications.
I confirm that lockup issue existed on EACH radio version I used and on EVERY ROM version.
I don't think this issue is caused by the GSM Band switch or Internet connection active or anything else specific, because this lockup happend even on networks with no 3G at all and no internet connection active and also BT and WiFi off.
It happens when I start intensivelly use my UNI for calls, sms, open contacts, view appointments (note: No 3-d party software at all).
I also mentioned that the issue happens more often with the battery level below 50% or so and almost rarelly happen on external power.
Another "good news" here is that if you receive an SMS during that intensive operations, you will permanently lose it after the phone lock up.
Thank you,
Dmitry.
I wonder is this is just a Universal issue? Or do other devices have the same issues; I mean as frequently as on the UNI.
If it is just the UNI than indeed it is useless as a phone and nothing more than a beeping, brick with a nice VGA screen. I basically fidn it hard to believe that this is the case and I would like to know if there is anyone out there, who does not have lock-up issues with the UNI and I would also like to know from the people who are testing Crossbow if the lock-ups still happen?
All input appreciated.

I have an interesting situation with my Orbit. This never occurred with WM5, but only since WM6.
Description:
After a fresh boot, the device works perfect, and connects to GPRS when needed, and I am able to direct push my email all day long. Now, if I go into Comm Manager, and stop the phone radio, and then start it again, I am no longer able to connect to GPRS, and neither are any other applications. ActiveSync and DP don't work anymore, neither does IE.
The only solution to the above is to soft reset the device again, and things go back to normal.
Troubleshooting:
I've tried the regkey to keep GPRS always on. I've also tried to disable any today plugins that could be causing this issue. I've even tried a hard reset, but the same behaviour occurs. Oddly enough, this problem also occurs on a WM6 based Hermes device, and never did before when using WM5.
Something weird is going on with GPRS and WM6 in general. Sometimes, I will be on the train without reception, and when my phone gets signal again, GPRS will say it is connected, but it is not. I have to soft reset.
Needless to say this is annoying. Can somebody confirm that this issue exists with the base O2 WM6 rom? What about some of the other ROMs here that you guys/girls have? Does the same behaviour occur? My ROM and radio are just the defaults, no upgrades, etc.
N.
Hi There,
I am well aware of the problem, I currently work in a telecoms company and the main device we ship out is the XDA Orbit (Artemis).
Currently we are downgrading all devices so as to ignore the problem, but a permanent solution is being worked upon.
The HTC Touch's radio is identical to that of the Artemis, this problem does NOT exist on the Touch (Thanks for testing Pof!) So I atleast have ground to work upon, it is not related to the radio itself but the RIL (Radio Interface Layer) driver.
I'll let you all know if (or rather WHEN) I find a solution.
i've had loads of trouble with this issue and here are my findings:
the dopod sea 3.7 rom and and anything else based on it are the worst affected.
the o2 wm6 rom isn't too bad
tom and meschle's roms are both pretty much fine
I do a 20 minute tube journey every day so i have tested this quite well!
cheers
alex
I'm having the same issue in the Artemis Touch 2.1 Rom.
I found that when I disabled the Phone option, the Flightmode-option would enable. Now, when I want to enable the phone, I tab the Flightmode option to disable Flightmode. It then enables the phone automatically and successfully opens the GPRS connection.
Just done this a couple of times but for now this seems to be a workaround.

The times I have had the issue with the O2 rom and the v.occasional times I have it with Tom/Meschle roms restarting the radio via flight mode always fixes it. With the Dopod and other 3.7 roms the whole radio seems to crash and you can't even get it into flight mode so soft reset is the only option.
This has been tested on all versions of the Artemis radio that are available.
same problem here on prophet. can connect. if i go ffline due to no signal, i cannot connect. after i switch to flightmode and activate phone again gpry works again. any patch?!.

No patch, just better roms.
The problem is one of the most annoying ones you can have: it appears only from time to time and you don't know when and even when it does you don't notice.
Simply my phone is not accessible for others even it shows full range and so on. The message "...the phone is switched off...". This problem occurs in as far as I remember 3 releases of ROMS (full, vanillas, etc). The radio ROM was also changed. I don't remember having such issue in early WM6 or in original 2005.
Since it's not related directly to any of the releases I post it as a new thread.
Now I have 3 options:
1. Downgrade to 2005
2. Throw the unit through the window, wait until end of contract and buy an iPhone
3. Try to fight with T-Mobile UK - which is not really an option since I just recovered from fighting with Orange for over a month
Does any of you experienced such problem?
Any known issues with downgrading to 2005 like ISPL required before flashing original ROM?
Any suggestions?

Well, I got the answer - couldn't wait and did the downgrade using original ROM. If anyone interested it went without problems. No ISPL needed. Connected, fired-up the exe file and worked OK.
I'll see how about the availability problem.
Ok, seems that it's only me having the conversation ;o)
I apologize for the thread location - it doesn't seem to be related strictly to WM6 anymore as I...
...installed WM5 and did some tests:
(I have voice mail switched off)
- Call waiting enabled = no calls allowed when GPRS active
- Call waiting disabled = no calls when transferring data (large file) but received when no transfer
- Used W660i SonyEricsson handset - could receive calls regardless of GPRS activity
Rang T-Mobile tech support where they told me that this is network feature that when internet connection is active no calls are allowed and since my voicemail is turned off all callers get message that my phone is switched off. In the light of GPRS specification and my tests this is a bull****.
Now I'm asking anyone on UK T-Mobile Web'n'Walk and who wants to help - please do such test. Just try to call your number from different phone when opening a web-page.
This is pretty important to me - I need internet on the move and don't want to get rid of my MDA.
Thanks in advance!
Hi there,
I'm on T-Mobile UK too and I ran some tests myself and found that you are absolutely correct. When you transfer data you cannot receive phone calls.
I've got an O2 device with me I can do some more tests on and I'll also try and borrow my Wife's Samsung and test that too. I'll post my findings here.
Cheers
Alex
ok, i've just tested this on an O2 3G device and there was no problem, next to try a none windows mobile t-mobile phone.
seems this problem has been around for while and on other networks.
http://www.freenfo.net/mobile/archive/index-t-64022.html
ok, final test and conclusion.
I tested the same o2 phone as above but in a NON 3g area (i.e. gprs only) and found the exact same issue.
conclusion: this seems to affect all types of phone and multiple networks but only when using gprs NOT 3g.
I'm suprised we havent heard more about this problem.
cheers
Alex
Thank you Alex very much for your help.
I did some research on the topic last night and found the same info as guys in the thread your linked. It must be that T-Mobile UK operates in NOM-2, which allows to suspend GPRS session only when no data is transferred. When packets are transmitted the device doesn't 'see' incoming calls as it's 'busy' with dealing with the packets. NOM-1 is 'able' to encapsulate information about incoming call into one of the packets and the device is notified about - so it can react, suspend the transmission and pick up the call.
The fact is that our MDA/Artemis uses Class B of GPRS which doesn't allow simultaneous CDA/GPRS at the same time. Even if it can suspend active data transfer it is the network that has to support that feature.
What I must notice is that I had lot more problems wiht this when I was using WM6. It seems that there were some packets transmitted by the system or something. I had my mail set to check servers every 15 mins at the beginning but lately ony once an hour or two. Other soft that could transmit anything was Weather module from SPB or Touch. Now when I'm on WM5 and was checking the issue during loading a page I was unavailable but as soon as a page was completely loaded my phone was accessible back.
My surprise is that if the 'issue' seems to be quite normal and there is nothing to do about it why I couldn't find any info about it here. Doesn't it affect anyone of our community?
I may be wrong with the WM6 expirience but still. If WM6 works fine in that respect it must have happened that someone missed a call when browsing the net.
i hadnt noticed to be honest

Did you try ringing your phone when it was loading a long page or downloading a file?
TBH I think I've noticed it just as much on WM6 as I did (or didn't) on WM5, I think I put these odd voice mails turning up down to weird WM issues! Now I know the truth though.
Obv. there isn't a lot we can do about this and I'm not prepared to turn off my Windows Live Mail or my direct push. I think we just have to wait until our contracts are up for renewal and get over to a 3G device - I'm liking the look of the Touch Cruise myself, or the Touch Dual if I want that keyboard back and by the time my contract is up I think they should be on T-Mob UK.
does the same thing happen in Edge areas or as that rolls out will the problem disappear?
I'm not sure about how EDGE works but the problem affects GPRS rather than 3G due to the fact that GPRS and the incoming call are submitted alongside each other and 3G is seperate. I don't think t-mob uk have edge running yet so I can't test, perhpas some else can test for us.
Bro.. My first 3rd party ROM is the Touch 3.0.. and yes.. my connnection did go off once a while (no bars as well).. that was kinda irritating. I have to go to connection manager and toggle my data connection or something like that, before my phone will get the GSM signal.
And yea.. the original WM5 and WM6 have no such issues.. I wonder if this is because of the new radio version..
Hello there,
What I Have: Att 8525 Herm100
Rom: Att's Mobile 6
Everything is stock but the extended life battery
The problem I am having is when ever I try to activate my WiFi the phone doesn't do anything. I am not sure if there is a wifi card or not but that's want I want to know. I have tried everything from activating it in com manager to going into the settings and activating it manually and nothing happens it acts like I didn't even hit the button to activate it. Is there a wifi card in the phone or is it integrated on the motherboard in the phone. Note: I bought this phone off e-bay and the wifi never worked when I received the phone.
I am new here and if there is a post about this already I am sorry.
I hate it when that happens.
To begin, there were two ATT OEM WM6 roms relevant to the 8525 that I noticed deep in the bowels of XGA.
I chose the later file (higher revision numbers) I found it here:
http://wiki.xda-developers.com/index.php?pagename=Available Original Shipped WM6 ROM Versions
From comm manager when I click the tower button on within a second the spinning windoze icon shows something is happening. It then starts "sniffing" for my preset wifi connection (ATT supplied 2wire portal 802.11g).
Now, if yours does not show the spinning windoze working icon when you turn on wifi? There obviously is a problem. This could be software, or hardware related (duh). If there is no error message related to "wifi is not an option, unavailable, or screwed" then my first guess is there is something missing or damaged in the ROM update that was applied to your device. As far as I know all 8525 (herm100) were shipped with wm5. It had been mentioned in the volumes of xda that the first AT&T WM6 rom was a little buggy. Try the later released AT&T WM6 update.
It was a run file so no muss no fuss. Sync the phone run the update from the pc, three minutes later the phone is flashed to ATT WM6 professional.
You could take it to a ATT shop? But, I think that without a doubt they would hand it back and say you need a new phone with a 20 year contract and 3g data plan even Obama would blush at.
Try the hard reset. take a picture of the startup screens so you have the numbers and see if the wifi startup is working after the reset. If not then compare the numbers to the above mentioned roms. If the indications are you have the first issue of WM6 from ATT try flashing the second release. If that still fails then your device could indeed have a hardware problem.
The wifi is indeed built into the system and if that chip on the board is not working it could be a overly expensive problem. Possibly a shop has a working board they would swap out cheap? Otherwise, it is a fun phone you can keep notes on, run gps software if you have a bluetooth gps receiver and software like tomtom.
To be honest the wifi on my 8525 has been convenient when around the house to check the local weather radar when I hear a thunder outside, or browse headlines from the porcelain room or even leave messenger turned on incase a gamer friend is looking for someone to get shot up in a game.
I have used the live search voice thing to amaze the neighbors once. But, the limited range of wifi is a real drawback to how truly wonderful that addition could be.
HELP Please! Wi-Fi not working!!!
Hi to XDA all users !!!
MY Hermes - HTC TyTN [Herm200]
I bought HTC Hermes myself year ago.
there was flashed a WM5.0, I've just downloaded from here HARD SPL & WM6,1 (Custom) Flashed.
Wi-Fi will works on WM5.0.
Well here I am at 6.1 flashed and now is not working Wi-Fi. When i pressed Power ON - loading long and nothing happens.
Other methods are also tried on Commanager and Settings - but did not help.
What do I need to do my dear.
HELP!
Thank you for your attention!
Hi Nurk.
Since the wifi worked on wm5 but failed after the 6.1 flash. I would guess the problem is in the 6.1 components. You might start with contacting the kitchen rom you employed for WM6.1 thread and see if this has happened to others. Next step would be to check the radio rom version. I did see on xda an assortment of Radio roms.
If your not totally in love with the current rom you have flashed? Try another 6.1 or even a 6.5 and see whats poppin.
