I have an interesting situation with my Orbit. This never occurred with WM5, but only since WM6.
Description:
After a fresh boot, the device works perfect, and connects to GPRS when needed, and I am able to direct push my email all day long. Now, if I go into Comm Manager, and stop the phone radio, and then start it again, I am no longer able to connect to GPRS, and neither are any other applications. ActiveSync and DP don't work anymore, neither does IE.
The only solution to the above is to soft reset the device again, and things go back to normal.
Troubleshooting:
I've tried the regkey to keep GPRS always on. I've also tried to disable any today plugins that could be causing this issue. I've even tried a hard reset, but the same behaviour occurs. Oddly enough, this problem also occurs on a WM6 based Hermes device, and never did before when using WM5.
Something weird is going on with GPRS and WM6 in general. Sometimes, I will be on the train without reception, and when my phone gets signal again, GPRS will say it is connected, but it is not. I have to soft reset.
Needless to say this is annoying. Can somebody confirm that this issue exists with the base O2 WM6 rom? What about some of the other ROMs here that you guys/girls have? Does the same behaviour occur? My ROM and radio are just the defaults, no upgrades, etc.

Hi There,
I am well aware of the problem, I currently work in a telecoms company and the main device we ship out is the XDA Orbit (Artemis).
Currently we are downgrading all devices so as to ignore the problem, but a permanent solution is being worked upon.
The HTC Touch's radio is identical to that of the Artemis, this problem does NOT exist on the Touch (Thanks for testing Pof!) So I atleast have ground to work upon, it is not related to the radio itself but the RIL (Radio Interface Layer) driver.
I'll let you all know if (or rather WHEN) I find a solution.
i've had loads of trouble with this issue and here are my findings:
the dopod sea 3.7 rom and and anything else based on it are the worst affected.
the o2 wm6 rom isn't too bad
tom and meschle's roms are both pretty much fine
I do a 20 minute tube journey every day so i have tested this quite well!
cheers
alex
I'm having the same issue in the Artemis Touch 2.1 Rom.
I found that when I disabled the Phone option, the Flightmode-option would enable. Now, when I want to enable the phone, I tab the Flightmode option to disable Flightmode. It then enables the phone automatically and successfully opens the GPRS connection.
Just done this a couple of times but for now this seems to be a workaround.

The times I have had the issue with the O2 rom and the v.occasional times I have it with Tom/Meschle roms restarting the radio via flight mode always fixes it. With the Dopod and other 3.7 roms the whole radio seems to crash and you can't even get it into flight mode so soft reset is the only option.
This has been tested on all versions of the Artemis radio that are available.
same problem here on prophet. can connect. if i go ffline due to no signal, i cannot connect. after i switch to flightmode and activate phone again gpry works again. any patch?!.

No patch, just better roms.

A few people have been having the same issue as me with more recent AKU3.* ROMs, wherein the radio features (GSM/UMTS,GPRS etc) - cease to function. Symptoms include the connectivity icons becoming non-responsive to stylus-press, and phone calls starting, but no call being made (silence) - and calls refusing to end.
This has been driving me nuts, and just when I think a new ROM (CE or Radio) has solved it, it re-appears. I have been playing around with everything I can to either diagnose, or solve this problem, and this is what I have found:
The phone only locks up, when handover between GSM and UMTS has occurred several times. I use the Hutchison 3 network in .au, and the coverage in Sydney is a bit spotty - hence the frequent handover to 'Roaming', and back again. Now that I have disabled the GSM functionality (i.e. just use UMTS, in the 'band' menu in 'Phone' settings) - I haven't had a single phone lockup.
To the other people having this issue: does this pattern of use sound familiar? I.e. is your main carrier UMTS, roaming to GSM? I'd like some feedback to see if we can isolate this, or if this solution works for other people
Hey
Had this problem many times with all kind of roms.
Usually the icons would react to clicks, but internet wouldn't work and also calling.
When I would turn on flight mode, the right icon (your reception) would change and gets a little cross (telling its disabled). But the left one would still be stuck on G/U as connected. It would take a min or 2 before it finally updates to a little cross saying its disabled. Then I can disable flight mode again and the phone would work (most of the time)
I live around 70 km from my work and I drive back and fort every day. In the car my universal is in the charger and I have always live messenger connected and AS for email.
during this trip my reception is lost twice, besides that it switches a couple of times from Umts to Gprs.
I've updated my phone to 1.14 radio en helmi 3.5 aku rom. And have experienced a couple of times what you discribed. The 3G and G/U icons wouldn't react to the stylus and the phone seems to be stuck. The device itself still works. But I have to soft reset to get it going again.
So after reading your story I can say this scenario refers to my experience.
I'm gonna try your solution from off today and let you know
I have only GPRS here and this problem happens to me with all AKU3.x versions even with different radios (1.09 -> 1.14.10) ... I still believe it has nothing to do with ONLY hand-over ... I reverted back to AKU2 and it never happened since then
Same here....
I have similar experiences with UMTS and GSM handover issues. I observed that sticking to one band (in my case GSM since it is more prevalent than the other in countries I go to!) is the way to go. When in M1, I got dropped problematic calls and my SMS were delayed but when I stuck to GSM only then everything was back to normal. I have been trying out the new Radio Rom 1.14.10 with Helmi AKU3.5 for 3 days now and am not having handover issues! Could be the Radio Rom or the Rom itself but if it acts up again then I know what to do then! Hope this helps!!!
The problem is in rilgsm.dll file.
I can tell that it is solved in crossbow.

would replacing the file in the current aku3 roms with an older one fix it?
i myself dont have the problem but allot of 3.2 wizard testers do.
Good to know, that I'm not the only one with this problem. I have seen this behaviour in all ROMs, not just the AKU3 and can confirm that it iseems to be related to the switchover between UMTS and GSM.
It also only seems to happen only when you have the internet connection open, which will always be the case when you use push-mail.
I had similar problems with the MDA III, whish I used before. Maybe it will get fixed in Crossbow - but by then we'll likely all have new phones.
^^
My internet connection is also always active. I have now switched from AUTO network to WCDMA (umts).
Going to see if this helps. After that I'll try the GSM band to see if it makes a difference
But it's something my device always had problems with, so I guess it's ROM independent
I'd like to see if that rilgsm.dll can be re-used. Unfortunately, the coverage of UMTS in the area where I live is far too spotty to be comfortable with pinning the radio band to UMTS.
However, I'm interested in your thoughts.
I must say that I agree with biso007. This problem started to occur when I upgraded to AKU3 roms. Before, I was on AKU2 with the exact same radio rom (I didn't flash it!) and never had any issue. Combined with mamaichs comment that it is related to a DLL file, I would say that the problem is indeed not related to a radio-ROM but to the AKU ROM.
Just my 2 cents....
I had same problems with Radio lockups on my UNIVERSAL. I've tried different ROMs with no luck. BUT after changing my Radio rom back to latest from T-mobile (1.10.03) everything back to normal- all day driving with GPRS on - no lockups at all!!! 100% solution is..... use old radio rom.
Would not mind downgrading...
I have lockup issues as well... if this really helps, I will downgrade the Radio ROM without hesitation. Where can I find thsi Radio ROM; is it on the xda-dev FTP site?
Thanks,
-Ireneus
Hi All!
Yes, this issue is the most annoying among all other issues, and it makes UNI impossible to use as the phone for business communications.
I confirm that lockup issue existed on EACH radio version I used and on EVERY ROM version.
I don't think this issue is caused by the GSM Band switch or Internet connection active or anything else specific, because this lockup happend even on networks with no 3G at all and no internet connection active and also BT and WiFi off.
It happens when I start intensivelly use my UNI for calls, sms, open contacts, view appointments (note: No 3-d party software at all).
I also mentioned that the issue happens more often with the battery level below 50% or so and almost rarelly happen on external power.
Another "good news" here is that if you receive an SMS during that intensive operations, you will permanently lose it after the phone lock up.
Thank you,
Dmitry.
I wonder is this is just a Universal issue? Or do other devices have the same issues; I mean as frequently as on the UNI.
If it is just the UNI than indeed it is useless as a phone and nothing more than a beeping, brick with a nice VGA screen. I basically fidn it hard to believe that this is the case and I would like to know if there is anyone out there, who does not have lock-up issues with the UNI and I would also like to know from the people who are testing Crossbow if the lock-ups still happen?
All input appreciated.

I'm experiencing strange problem with GPRS on WMXL 0.10
After upgrade, GPRS can attach just when radio starts.
When attached, GPRS works just fine, but if GPRS occasionally deattaches (corresponding icon with 2 opposite arrows and 'x'), there's no way to attach it, besides restart of radio (phone off/on through comm.manager, or network select).
If I set "search [G] on start GPRS connection" via GB-Soft Tweak (instead of default "Search GPRS [G] on start radio") it never connects (unless network reconnect happens)
PIE silently does nothing, Opera says "Could not establish network connection [Error:33]".
Before upgrade WM5 could easily reattach GPRS if it was off.
Any ideas ? I've searched through the forum with no success.
Radio versions 1.35, 1.34, 1.27 were tried with the same symptoms (SSPL)
Thank you in advance.

I would wait and see if the same happens on v0.2 ??
Have you used HTweakC to set the auto-attach? That is how I do it and I must say that I've not experienced this issue.

Certainly, i'll upgrade to 0.20 as soon, as it would be possible.
But I wonder, if i'm the one, who meet the problem.
Im the same. My connection on WM5 AKU3.3 was rock solid and if lost, would always reconnect. Now it is upredictable at best. Probably 80% of the time its fine but if I disable the connection overnight using bandswitch when the connection reenables I can pretty much guarantee that the data connection wont reconnect. None of the programs that should start it such as activesync will do so.
This is the one glitch that has had me considering going back to WM5, but Im hanging on for the next version hoping this will come right.
Ive tried different radio roms but makes no change. Currently using 1.27 which seems to be the best of the bunch.
Really want to stay with WM6 as I love the built in apps, especially the new email but this seems like a typical beta glitch.

Yes, and it works - when radio starts, GPRS successfully attaches and everything is alright.
Until it occasionally deattaches (2 contrary arrows and 'x' icon instead of [G] appears) and there's no way to use it, besides radio restart or network reselect.

Well, I've flashed AKU3.3 and GPRS reattaches transparently.
Is WMXL 0.2 worth of trying in order to fix this issue in your opinion?
Or, it needs "special" radio version? It seems interaction with Radio has changed in WM6.
I have the same experience with WMXL 0.10, when the connection is lost trying to reconnect will crash the connection manager.
No matter how many times you tap in the PIN for your SIM it will not reconnect.
So then it is down to soft reset or switching off to get things working again.
The HSDPA addin also don't seem to work for me. Even after shutting down the 3G / GPRS connection to change the band in HTweakC or in settings/phone/band.
i'm experiencing exactly the same.
after connection is lost gprs won't reconnect or if so it takes very long (10min?) even with a good reception. my gprs and 3g connection was very solid before upgrading to wm6. tried 1.27 and 1.35, same problems. even with nothing installed: same problem.
i've never experienced anything like that before. not on my hermes with wm5, not on my htc wizard or htc universal with wm6.
it has to be something about hermes and wm6. i don't know what it is. i did a HR many times and wanted to see which app is causing the problem (actually resco explorer runs weird on my hermes with wm6), but nothing. as i said even with nothing installed (just the pushmail being used) it's still the same.
and it's really annoying.
still no solution or explanation?
same problem here, FWIW. no solution AFAIK. I see Daniel has found some bug in WM6 as it relates to his bandswitcher app here:

What is WITH everyone bumping the old WMXL threads???
Hey guys,
I recently upgraded my T-Mobile UK MDA Compact III to WM6.
I now have an intermittent problem with the GPRS/Internet. Basically, if fails to connect.
From what I've read, I think I need to delete my current connection settings, and then run the CAB from the WM5 Rom.
Has anyone on T-Mobile UK, done this with success? If so, can you point me in the direction of the CAB file you used?
Cheers,
Tim
I just set mine up manually.
Go to T-Mobile Website, click on phone support
http://www.t-mobile.co.uk/help-and-advice/phone-support/
enter your phone number and follow instructions for setting up MMS and you get a .pdf with instructions to set up both GPRS and MMS.
Delete any current settings and follow the above instructions.
I too am getting these issues. I have recently upgraded to the WWE dopod WM 6 rom (official HTC release) 3.7.707.1. I started to notice that if my phone was out of reception for any amount of time GPRS would fail to reconnect until a soft reset was performed. I have added the radio 02.94.90 to try and resolve this but no joy. I have added the GPRS settings exactly as per the TMob site again no joy. GPRS Auth is set to PAP which I think is correct.
One point to note is that I have not installed any items from the Dopod ext rom.
Once I have soft reset the connection will be fine until I lose reception again.
Hi,
Same issue here with all WM6 ROMs I've tried so far (to at least some extend). Most noticable is irritating behavior in Google Maps with WM6. In WM5 when the connection is unavailable the GPS tracking just continues till data comes in again. In WM6 the result is an error message. It's one of the reasons that makes me consider going back to WM5 for quite a while now. New features are nice but if old ones aren't at least as solid as before it makes no sense when you need them.
Recently I bumped into the every same issue you describe (requiring a soft reset) with B&B 3.7.. Which is a step worse in terms of stability then what I experienced before. At the same time there have been periods that I don't bumb into the issue. So I'm not sure what the cause is. My guess is that it's triggered when you've been in a bad reception area for some time.. But I don't have any hard facts to confirm the exact trigger of the problem.

I thought i'd try hard resetting my phone today to see if it would help but still no joy. the problem appears to affect voice as well as data and only occurs after at least 15 - 20 mins out of reception.
any ideas folks? I would go back to wm5 but the tmobile rom isn't available.
Hi All,
I have thesame problem previously with my Wizard. Found out that one my today plug-in is the culprit. The plug-in is "Battery Status Today ......" the one that shows the , Operator's name, speed, temp, V, A etc of your PPC on the today screen.
I dunno whether this is true and working for anyobe but in my case, my GPRS back to normal after after disable the plug-in. You can try the same too.
Other way, is to disable all non-standard today plug-in, test your Egde/GPRS with connect and disconnect(pressing the red button for more than 3seconds).
Activate one plug-in at a time and do the same test. Hopefully, you can indentify the problem and solve it.
regards,
morisa
Downloading the O2 ROM to see if that helps.. I have a feeling it might resolve this issue (fingers crossed!). I will post back here if it does.
Cheers
Alex
Once off the tube this morning my phone connected straight up and downloaded my emails. I hope I'm not speaking too soon but I think the O2 ROM has resolved the issue which would suggest it is a bug in the Dopod SEA ROM.
I will probably get the radio upgraded to 02.94.90 at some today and test that too.
Cheers
Alex
02.95.90 is now available

I know excatlh the problem you mean as mine has done that for a long time. however, since I flashed Helmi's Wm6 rom mine hasn't done it again. it maybe the fix you need then again it may not depending on your device.
Mine is originally and Orange M2000 and prior to trying Orange's last official rom and t-mobile's latest rom as well it was still doing exactly as you described. make sure your moel is listed in helmi's description of compatable devices. and remember to do pim backup and backup you Storage arear before flashing as it combines internal storage to main memory in the wm6 rom
hope that helps
I just got my BA a few days ago. Did the WM6 upgrade today, and the wlan was doing this.
I noticed that it was happening after I'd sync'd it and the wifi connection was disabled by ActiveSync. I went into the Connection Settings on ActiveSync on my computer (ver. 4.5) and checked the "Allow wireless connection on device when connected to the desktop"
So far, this has worked. I've been able to sync my BA, disconnect, and reconnect to my wireless connection without having to do a reset first.

This appears to be a bug in the ROM. Activesync on the phone doesn't always realize that the connection is gone and gets 'stuck' in a loop trying to sync to a now-missing computer. Closing activesync on the phone will also clear it and allow the wifi to work after syncing.
i flashed it with wm6 but the wifi probelm still exists,,,only the lamp flashes but no tower is showing,,,,,,,,,,and i tried the wlan manager,,,and the com manager nothing helped
I have exactly the same problem, i think its an hardware error.
the problem started half a year ago with wm2003, yesterday i flashed wm6 but the bug still exists
after multiple switch on-and-off sometimes the wireless works, sometimes it takes just a while 5-10 minutes.
if theres somewhere a solution, please let me know
after a soft reset open CommManager, Setup, Wireless LAN an Select "TURN ON WLAN".
This dont conect.
But, after you do that, you can use te On/Off button of Wifi on te CommMannager with any problem...
You need to do this, only one time after a Soft Reset.
Can this be done via a script, reg key or even a Visual Basic App that opens the Comm Manager and the Wireless Manager and selects these in sequence? I have a profile switching software (PhoneAlarm) and it works a treat all for the activatation of WLAN. Sometimes it works fine, others, it doesn't.
As I am running WM6 and it's lovely undocumented feature (bug) of the time and password both being in volitile memory, each time I take my battery out, I have to rebuild the 'ken device as I cannot unlock the screen. I have resorted to using SPB backup nightly and a reboot after backup (as the device seems to work better with a daily reset (hey, it ain't stable yet - we are still waiting Billy)). This is where the Wireless issue comes into play.
Do I settle for Profile switching with wireless powering on correctly or do I backup my device and ensure that I am not re-imaging the stupid thing every day when I take out the battery! Mobile device - bulldust! Not very mobile when you have to keep it plugged in to ensure the battery doen't run out! My Laptop is more mobile!

no, that doesnt work with my BA
Hello,
i am facing some problems with my Hermes and I really don't know what is going on, the problems is that, although it shows that is connected to the telephone network, if somebody calls me it doesn't ring and is not responding. At that time that is not responding if i try to call the phone screen shows that is dialing but it is not, if i click the "End call" it doesn't end until it times out, after that it is not responding again and it needs a reset. After the reset it's working again until the next time that will crash.
I am using Schap's 4.31 rom with 1.54.30.10 radio
What do you suggest that i should do?
I got the same problem with older Schap's ROMs. When I flashed to K's or anything else (not based on Schap's) the problem disappeared.
I had the same exact issue, my solution to this issue was to replace the radio with 1.47.30.10. It has been 5 days without any issue. I hope that helps.
you just changed the radio? or the windows rom also?
I've had this issue on my Hermes, although it was evident on WM5, which is one of the reasons I upgraded to WM6, which alas just created other problems

nah i don't think i will downgrade to WM5, maybe i will try another rom.
also the battery doesn't last long, maybe 3 hours, i don't know why is that, and maybe that is what is causing the problem.
I just downloaded the radio from this link http://www.parkingdenied.com/filebrowser/Hermes/Radio+Roms
If I was you, I will try Radio down-grade first.
Good luck
When the phone freezes on the "dialing..." screen it is cuz the phone lost its network connection (although it wont show it). U can remedy this by turning the "phone" part (not the whole device) off then on again, so it will reconnect to the network.
Also, some radios are very power draining. Try check here for feedback on different radios.
Basically, there is a good chance all this messin u up is ur radio
