Craving for WM5 =/ - MDA III, XDA III, PDA2k, 9090 General

I upgraded and downgraded 2 times to WM5 already, and the only reason I downgrade is because it is too slow . I want to run WM5 fast! I wish there was a way =/, even overclocking doesn't make it as fast as WM2003SE.

what device have you got???
I have wm5.0 on my device since day 1, its fast and furious, i not sure what speed you want it, but its fast enough for me but its as fast as wm2003se on my device, i dont even overclock it either, i just installed all the patches and away i go. i have the XDA 2s device, not sure if it makes a difference.
i have had a few probelms, but a hard reset solved that, since there isnt much memory to store stuff on, i dont need to back anything up, and i have all patches on my sd card as backup if needs hard reseting, and i have only hard reset once since i installed it. 8)
all i say is read wiki carefully and you shouldnt go far wrong.

i have an xda iis too hmmm well this just caught my attention, - http://wiki.xda-developers.com/index.php?pagename=BA_WM5_Patches_ChangeLog, I see (After editing the registry you need to power off your device, wait several seconds (about 15) and soft reset. Otherwise changes would be lost!), well what I did when installing the patches is just soft reset, I never powered down for about 15 seconds, would this make the device faster? ;-)

I downgraded to wm2003 'cause wm5 randomly hang up my pda2k and I must soft-reset!
I've installed all the patch correctly and spb pocket plus 3.0
no appz to overlock

Well may be this
In my case SPB Pocket plus makes my device very slow, it works good before I install pocket plus, and I tried several versions now. Even the latest, that says that it works with windows mobile 5 is still makes it way to slow.
I guess they have to fix something before I will buy it.

constant resets on O2 xda orbit

i've had my orbit for around a month and a half now, and it's brilliant other than a few problems.
firstly the only additional programs i've installed are:
SPB Diary
SPB Pocket Plus
I do have tomtom but i haven't re-installed that since my last hard reset.
so the problems are as follows:
every now and then when i try to unlock my phone, it seems to hang, with the screen staying bright but no response no matter what i try - the obvious solution is to soft reset which works 9/10 times
however, occasionally, i get a problem where the soft reset does not work correctly. The O2 screen appears (as expected) but about 1 second after the windows mobile screen appears, the screen goes completely dark and will not come on....
This has happened many times (sometimes on a daily basis) and the only solutaion i had worked out was to hard reset and take it back to factory settings - very annoying having to go through everything altering my settings so frequently following a hrd reset.
This problem also occured just a minute ago. i decided to do a hard reset and plugged the phone into my laptop so i could synchronise all my contacts back on. However i plugged it in before a hard reset was performed. Magically the screen lit back up! i was overjoyed, thinking i'd found a solution! so i unplugged it happily. thinking i wouldn't have to hard reset but the screen goes black as soon as i unplug it from the laptop...
i have since changed the brightness settings so that it's always on full brightness. this seems to have worked and avoided me the hassle of a hard reset. However i fear this is only a temporary solution
So my questions are:
is it common for the Orbit to hang regularly, causing me to perform around 1 soft reset per day??
Are the programs i have listed known to cause such problems?
Also has anyone else had such problems?
I've considered sending the phone back for an exchange for a new orbit? is this a good idea or may i expect the same with another, newer orbit (i've neverr really had a pda/phone before so i'm a little bit of a noob in this area!)
THANKS for any help, will be much appreciated!
CHEERS!
It sounds like a faulty Orbit to me. Although I did run SPB Pocket Plus on my Orbit I found it so sluggish with the Orbits slow processor that I removed it and haven't used it for months.
What happens if you:
1) Hard reset
2) Remove Active sync from your computer by the usual PC "add/remove" programs, and then go into the appropriate PC directory and manually remove what's left
3) Re-boot PC
4) Reinstall Active sync (which version are you using? I found AS 4.2 stable in a Win XP Home environment, syncing with Outlook 2002, then more latterly with Outlook 2007
5) Just synchronise your Outlook basics i.e. Contacts, Calendar, Tasks and nothing else.
6) If you use a Micro SD card install the HTC SD Card patch (see links elswhere in the forum for the patch)
If this setup is stable for a day or two, then try adding sometheng else back on, avoiding Pocket Plus for the moment.
If the basic setup is unstable, I suggest your Orbit is faulty. Mine runs quite stably, and currently running in a Vista Ultimate environment without problem.

Can a Moderator please remove this duplicate, I've no idea why it happened!
i have good news (kind of)! after upping the backlight in system settings the screen does not appear to go blank anymore.
i tested this by turning the brightness down - the screen (almost) instantly went blank and would not come back on after a soft reset.. however i took it home, plugged it in (my settings are for full brightness when attatched to a power source, in the test i only changed the brightness when not connected to a power source) re-adjusted the brightness and it works fine again now - in the past, this would have called for a hard reset due to the screen refusing to come on!
I've since found another thread on the forum from another user who seemed to have the screen going blank problem, he/she also cited turning up the brightness (even though that sounds obvious!) as the solution - which is strange as the screen doesn't go dimmer as such, it goes completely black, i cannot see anything at all!
however i have had a crash still...
to answer the above, i am running:
AS 4.2, as mentioned
XP media centre edition
AMD Turion 64 X2
and i have installed the SD corruption fix , even when i first got the phone and hadn't installed it SD never corrupted though (newer build maybe??)
I don't really use outlook to sync emails anyway - the only things i sync are the basics that u mentioned (including notes as well, sorry). i don't think there is much point in doing a hard reset as i think i only cleared everything around 2/3 days ago.
i will however remove spb pocket plus for the mean while, do u think i should also remove spb diary whilst i'm at it to ensure the device is completely clean?
i would like to point out however pocket plus is not running all that slow at all... the reason i installed pocket plus was for the closing of a program when the "x" is clicked, rather than minimising them (as is standard!).
Anybody know any registry fixes for this so i need not install any additional programs to access this feature? or at a push, a smaller program that offers only a minimal set of features including this specific one?
One thing i have noticed, is that the more programs i install the more likely it is to crash, this seems trend seems to occur irregardless of which particular software i have installed (which is why, for the moment, i havent even reinstalled tomtom - i'm just leaving all the installation and maps on my SD card for when i need them!)
The problem is, as of yet, i have not worked out whether previously i had to hard reset simply because the screen didn't come and i had not resolved this issue yet, on or due to something else - however, each time i had to hard reset the screen would go dark and unresponsive! As i said though, the stalls and soft resets continue for the time being!
thanks for the continued help
D'OH!
screen just went blank, and no response from device, guess my solution of upping the brightness settings has only improved the problem, not resolved it!
ARGH!

Total System Failure

A few weeks ago, I flashed my wm5 rom to wm6 because whenever I used to soft reset the device, it would not turn on again without faking a hard reset and then canceling out. WM6 worked perfectly out of the gate for the first few weeks. I use the following extensively.
-- SPB Finance - stored on main memory
-- SPB Backup - backups stored on storage card
-- SPB Insight - content on storage card
-- PCM Keyboard 0.9
-- Resco Explorer
-- MS Reader
-- BatteryStatus
-- Direct Push on 24/7
-- Overclocked to 283
I powered the device on and noticed the signal strength was quite low, and it tried to connect to GPRS, but was failing. I clicked "Hide", and immediately, full white screen, and complete lockup. I didn't panic yet, and soft reset the device. It got to the green win mobile screen and then nothing... completely dead device, no lights... nothing.
I tried everything possible, including leaving the battery out for 20 min, but no luck at all. Then I tried to hard reset the device... but it said something about wiping the fat table, and it reboot, and I noticed on the main O2 splash screen, it would give the IPL, SPL, and no GSM radio version... and then would reboot again. I tried hard reseting a few times and each time the same thing!
When I soft reset the device, the orange message light would turn on, but the LCD would not power up, and then it would just stay that way. Plugging in the charger would cause the device to charge.
I tried removing the storage card, but no luck. Then for whatever reason I tried a hard reset again and this time it worked! Almost... When the reset was complete, I could not get any phone signal. The phone would keep trying to connect, then disconnect and disable itself, then try again every 2 seconds or so. It was as if the radio wasn't there anymore. No matter what SIM I put in, no radio, even though a TYTN sitting beside me got full signal on any SIM I threw at it.
I decided to re-flash the official ROM from my laptop, and now I had the radio working... but the phone would not charge, and activesync would not work. The USB was missing. When I tapped the battery icon, it said "unknown power level" and that was that.
After a soft reset, USB was back, and the device managed to stabilize. I reduced the overclock to 260, and it has been running fine ever since. I loaded all the programs back again except for SPB Insight. Reason is after installing this program previously, I would tether the device to the computer to sync the channels... and it would... but at random, it would mess up my direct push/activesync so that when the device was un-tethered, direct push would not work. I'm a bit worried of putting that program back on.
I've noticed a slew of disabled orbit threads lately, and just wanted to add my experience to this.

USB Problem

Hi, I have the HTC Touch installed on my Orbit, I have just gone to connect it to my PC but it isn't even charging it never mind connecting to active sync.
I have tried it on my other PC with another USB cable too and that didn't work either. so it's not the computers.
It will charge fine with a mains charger, is this likely to be a software error on the XDA or is my usb slot dodgy, any ideas anyone???
Try a different USB lead as that could be the problem (I bet you used the same lead on both PC's) - OOPs re- read the post and you tried another lead!! - hard reset might be the next call then if you really want to wipe the device - Mike
Thanks for the help, After 4 soft resets it decided to work, Strange. I upgraded to armetis touch 4.01 from 3.01 and it seems a lot slower and buggy. Think im gonna go back.

Was it the Vanilla/Generic 4.01 - the blue one NOT the green one - by chance?
I had the same problem and noticed that ActiveSync on the phone (the application with the green circle icon) would not run. Pressed the link on the menu and nothing opened on the phone. You should get a screen telling you to make a connection etc. I flashed it four times, all to no avail.
I downloaded the same ROM, but the GREEN version and it worked! Go figure.
If you are in the mood to try again, I recommend the Artemis Touch 4.01 WM6.1 WWE ROM - Lite without cube. It works really well, and even though it's got some of the HTC Touch apps in it, it has a lot of room left to run programs. More than I had when I loaded the Vanilla version and then installed the same HTC add-ons. I'm running SPB Pocket Plus 4 on my homescreen (I understand it to be a memory hog) and I still have 21.1 M left (after fresh boot, according to BatteryStatus). After a day of use (wifi & gprs internet (both pIE and Opera), tomtom, phone, text, email, MP3s, live radio stream, a game or two, and PIM stuff) it usually sits right around 16-18 M (using hibernate along the way, to keep it cleaned up). I'm very pleased with that as most the roms I tried seemed to suffer from memory leak. Also, battery drain isn't an issue. Overnight (10 hours of no use, but ON) I see a 2% drain. I do a lot with my phone so the rest of the day I've got it plugged in if I'm streaming or in the car etc. I can't really speak to battery drain during the day other than it hasn't been an issue for me at all. Again...very pleased.
BTW, (on my phone at least)...the Artemis Touch 4.01 WM6.1 WWE - Vanilla had no SAPsettings even though it's listed as being in there and I could not get the Artemis Touch 4.01 WM6.1 WWE ROM - Lite WITH 4 sided cube to boot. It just hung at the splash screen. The full WITH 4 sided cube has extra stuff in it I'm not interested in, so I loaded it to check it out then went back to the one I raved about above (Artemis Touch 4.01 WM6.1 WWE ROM - Lite without cube).

It was the 4.01 full version, even after I went back to 3.01 it still happens, the best way of doing getting it to work is to plug the usb into the phone and pc then do the soft reset that works everytime, Does anyone have a fix for this! I doubt it's the rom because it's done this on 2 different roms now.
Also when I try and charge it from the mains it doesnt aleways work and I have to soft reset?
Maybe a dodgy usb port then. My previous HTC phone with the same type of multi-use USB port got to where it would only charge from a desktop cradle...not the car, not usb, not the wall charger. I bought a cradle that charged the phone and an extra battery simultaneously. Then I'd keep the extra battery with me for 'just in case' - and of course, would charge the phone in the cradle nightly. The only way I could ActiveSync was via BlueTooth. That was my experience anyway. On a side note, the USB port on my Artemis seems much better - very smooth. It has a very positive feel when plugging in the cord. My other phone it always felt 'chunky' - for lack of a better word. Not smooth at all. So, I'm hopefull - or, at least I was until reading your post - that this one will last.
Problem with ActiveSync
I had this problem so you try to turn off your antivirus, firewall, antispam etc. and then try connect to PC.

HELP! - Dash Black - 6.1 Rose - MMS, Internet connectivity problems

I am not sure what is going on, my Dash was connecting fine but all of a sudden, it is trying to connect to email and draining the battery in the process. It is also failing to download weather info on the widget on the home screen. Memory is being drained and RAM is loaded down more and more. I cannot connect to MMS anymore (That was the first sign of trouble) and it seems to take forever to go from one part of the home screen to another.
I actually had a similar problem with the previous Dash that I had which culminated in it finally cutting off at random times, especially when connecting to the internet or in a call. I was able to solve the problem when it got bad by doing a hard reset but, you can imagine, I hate going to such an extreme all the time since I have to reinstall everything over and over again!
A couple of questions:
1. Is there a way to save the home screen settings? Especially the Favs and Application settings and restore them when restoring after a hard reset?
2. Can I increase the memory on RAM without having to resort to a hard reset or re-flash?
Thanks in Advance!

there's a couple of backup softwares that you can perform a full or a custom backup of your system , like a computer, it creates an .exe file that you save on your sd card, so when you have to do a hard reset, all you got to do is run your backup file and it installs everything back to how you had it when you created the file. You can search for sprite backup or spb backup.
I think the only way to access more memory on ram is to flash a lite version of a rom.

Or use the PagePool tuner, then you have to sacrifice speed for memory, you would have to modify the .nbh so have to flash again.
Tried the Backup but...
Well, that sounds good but it just restores to the same problems. Is there a way to identify the menu (CHOME) settings, which includes the favs, and still do the hard reset? It is a pain to have to restore everything. At least, after getting everything restored from scratch, I can THEN do a back up so I won't have to go through this again. It seems like this is a common occurrence with Dash/and/or Win 6.1.
As an aside, the weather is not downloading anymore either. Email hangs either Connecting or Disconnecting. I am using Stylez 1.7 Rose (which, other than these problems, I do really like!

Now things have gone south! It won't reboot! Before this, it was saying that there was no RAM, to uninstall a program to solve this problem. Since I had just done a hard reboot, I knew it could not be loaded up with too many programs!
I decided to do a soft reset, using the reboot from the new task manager. I realized that it had started to reboot but was hung up on the HTC Excalibur Energy Star Compliant screen (the new black screen in the NRG Rose rebuild.)
It is still there and I have tried to do a hard reset using the WIKI instructions but still hangs in the same place. I can't get past this screen. I perfectly realize that, should this continue, I am Screwed! HELP! I can't make a connection to reflash even!
Thanks in Advance!
10 pm: I did the hard reset following Stylez instructions, it is still being a pain, I may have to do another hard reset to get things back. I am able to send and receive SMS messages and sync up again, to some extent but things are not as they were yesterday even. Not sure what to make of this.
Okay, this is not much fun, I did a hard reset, installed minimal programs. Now not hitting the internet and it shuts off randomly. I could not get it rebooted for the longest time this morning. Finally just decided to start up and ran all day. Tried to check a web site and it was not connecting. I changed the settings and it just shut itself off. I tried to reboot but, 35 minutes later, still not coming up. It goes through the HTC Screen and vibrates then shuts off. ONCE it go all the way to the new Energy star screen but it shut off after that.
Argggggggggggggggggggggg
I just noticed that the little light is flashing red. It will do that if it actually makes it far enough in the boot up process. I have seen this before, the device is reading the battery as dead or almost dead. Since it had a full charge when it shut down, I am pretty sure that this is misreading the battery. I am trying to take the battery out and reinserting to get it to read the battery correctly. I happen to have an extra battery at home and might use that, or put it on the charger, so I can reboot and reflash the Dash.

Request for work on Charging

As most of you know, we have had an issue with charging all nand flashed Android devices, put simply, unlike windows mobile, we cannot charge while the device is powered down.
This has caused quite a few problems for users who are unaware of this, there are many posts related to dead batteries, non-booting devices etc, and although there are steps we can take to avoid this, it is perhaps a more important issue than GPS or Camera.
This is in no way disrespect to those working on these aspects, I have nothing but admiration for the way you guys have improved upon the usability and functionality of our beloved gadgets.
However I feel that we also need to address this issue, it is, for many, a major stumbling block, which causes many to return to Windows mobile, with a sense of dissatisfaction for all that has been achieved.
Much as I'd love to work on this, my skills are not in this field, and have no idea where to start looking, although I suspect it's Kernel based, since it affects all builds.
So what I'm asking for is for those with more knowledge than me, to start throwing a few ideas around, see what we can come up with.
Thanks for reading this
zenity I don't think that is a big issue cause there is a workaround.
I already post this in Warm Donut thread and I learned from polyrhythmic
When your battery is dead, plug phone into the charger and when the LED turns orange power on the device. Then leave it alone to charge.
My battery drains out at least twice a week and powering on while LED is orange always worked for me.
I know this isnt the thread for work arounds but I wanted to put my two cents in...
When phone is dead (power button does nothing):
1. Plug in for about 20 seconds
2. Unplug
3. Remove and replace battery
4. Turn on
5. Plug in again.
Well while we are throwing 2cents in the pot...
My experience was thinking I destroyed my phone cause even after being on charge for some time after full battery drain it wouldn't come on with power button... Finally poked soft-reset button and it booted right up, and since then I've learned on complete drain, plug in for a couple minutes then hit reset and it comes on...
Ive also noticed the soft reset thing, but for me the experience is mostly quite different. I havent experienced a long delay between dead battery and charging maybe but whenever my phone turns off at 0% battery, almost every time it turns on automatically when I plug in the charging cable, and I get the charging sound notification during the android splashscreen. I'm using myns warm donut on nand.
The problem is that all these workarounds are not addressing the root of the problem, we cannot charge while switched off, and this is the issue I'd like to see a solution to.
I like the simplicity of the plug in and power on workaround though, didn't think of that, lol.
when you flash nbh kernel on device, you overwritting standard bootloader, that knows about system state, when you plugging charger in - phone waits sometime and starts bootloader, that starts kernel without display powered up (you can see it on flashing LEDs) - to fix this problem, we need dump that bootloader code from winmo nbh and try to include it to our bootloader.
problem is - nobody knows how to do that
Well that's an answer, lol, perhaps not the one I expected, but at least it gives somewhere to look

OK... that gives me and idea....
BRB...
Nevermind...
I had pulled apart the winmo nbh before, so I thought I would give it a try...
I think the HardSPL most of us install to get android installed is the issue.
I flashed just the spl that came with the stock HTC rom for tilt,
it wrote OK but didn't overwrite the HardSPL and didn't fix the charging.
I know some people flash the android nbh without going to hardspl first.
my question would then be...
can anyone that has the original stock spl on the phone charge android with the phone off?
I think we need HardSPL on our phones to flash the NBH anyway, however wouldn't that affect winmo charging also?

I haven't gone back to winmo in so long...
Does the phone charge while off in winmo after installing hardspl???
Yes it does, got my spare kais on stock winmo for a work related development project just now, it charges fine when off, hardSPL 3.34.
well that just shoots a hole in my theory then doesn't it...
the contents of the stock nbh are as follows...
00_GSM_0x301.nb (radio)
01_SPL_0x200.nb (Bootloader)
02_MainSplash_0x600.nb (Bootsplash)
03_OS_0x400.nb (windows mobile OS)
when flashing android nbh's we only change the OS
most of us have changed the radio as well as flashing HARDSPL
I have changed my Bootslpash as well but I am sure that isn't the problem.
like I said... I flashed just the stock spl back to the phone.
but it didn't change the HArdSPL.
however, if the phone still charges with the winmo OS and Hardspl
I am again at a loss.
just reread this:
HardSPL prevent you from accidently flashing a new SPL (you must use Jump/Soft SPL for this) and SuperCID your phone.

so that explains the spl flash not overwriting hardspl...
not sure we want to do that anyway.
As far as I'm aware it's kernel related, but I really don't know enough about it to know exactly the relationship between the kernel and how it handles charging while off.
When switched off something must wake up the kernel in order to initiate the charging process, now why does it stop charging? That is the problem that has to be solved.
here is a quote from the wiki...
Why would I want to change my SPL back after I HardSPL?
Up until a week ago the answer you would have probably gotten is "you wouldn't." However with the release of the Official 6.1 HTC ROM there has been alot of speculation, and some real data inferring that for best performance of a ROM you should use the SPL that came with a ROM or at the very least (to put it another way) you should use a newer SPL with a newer ROM.
There is no definitive proof or specific results that can show you how one SPL will make your device perform over another. I believe I have conducted the most "scientific" experiments on this to date which you can find here. However which SPL you use is up to you based on how you feel it makes the device operate. I recommend however that you use either one of the HardSPLs or the SPL that came with your ROM. It is not recommended (at this point) to run your ROM with an SPL that is not matched to it.

maybe the SPL is looking for winmo...
do we need an android specific hardspl???
or like you said it may be kernel related.
Just looking for patterns everyone one in this thread is using the newest radio. Maybe try an older radio. My thought is that maybe the battery never went to 0 when you were using wimo and the newest radio (my case).
On a side note. It is really bad to let LiOn batteries go to 0. they are different than NiCad yet many keep the same habits. NiCad had to be drained for the memory problem that LiOn doenst have. I always turn my phone off at 10% if i cant get to a charger. Never need to charge with the phone off.
and look at that, as soon as i comment on battery stuff my phone shuts off and i have to charge with it off

Ok not the case, i just tryed with a old radio 1.65.x
Are we sure that its not working? Inside the OS the light blinks and in wimo it was solid. could it just be that once the SPL loads the kernal that the light turns off? I remember leaving my phone plugged in even though the light was off and it turned on charged to 40%(when i got to where i was going).
In the end I still think a good fix is to have the phone shut down at 5%. I remember wimo did this, and as much as you wanted to turn it back on, it just shut down(could be changed, yes). Much better for LiOn anyway. This would help keep the install from going corrupt.
