HELP! - Dash Black - 6.1 Rose - MMS, Internet connectivity problems - HTC Excalibur

I am not sure what is going on, my Dash was connecting fine but all of a sudden, it is trying to connect to email and draining the battery in the process. It is also failing to download weather info on the widget on the home screen. Memory is being drained and RAM is loaded down more and more. I cannot connect to MMS anymore (That was the first sign of trouble) and it seems to take forever to go from one part of the home screen to another.
I actually had a similar problem with the previous Dash that I had which culminated in it finally cutting off at random times, especially when connecting to the internet or in a call. I was able to solve the problem when it got bad by doing a hard reset but, you can imagine, I hate going to such an extreme all the time since I have to reinstall everything over and over again!
A couple of questions:
1. Is there a way to save the home screen settings? Especially the Favs and Application settings and restore them when restoring after a hard reset?
2. Can I increase the memory on RAM without having to resort to a hard reset or re-flash?
Thanks in Advance!

there's a couple of backup softwares that you can perform a full or a custom backup of your system , like a computer, it creates an .exe file that you save on your sd card, so when you have to do a hard reset, all you got to do is run your backup file and it installs everything back to how you had it when you created the file. You can search for sprite backup or spb backup.
I think the only way to access more memory on ram is to flash a lite version of a rom.

Or use the PagePool tuner, then you have to sacrifice speed for memory, you would have to modify the .nbh so have to flash again.

Tried the Backup but...
Well, that sounds good but it just restores to the same problems. Is there a way to identify the menu (CHOME) settings, which includes the favs, and still do the hard reset? It is a pain to have to restore everything. At least, after getting everything restored from scratch, I can THEN do a back up so I won't have to go through this again. It seems like this is a common occurrence with Dash/and/or Win 6.1.
As an aside, the weather is not downloading anymore either. Email hangs either Connecting or Disconnecting. I am using Stylez 1.7 Rose (which, other than these problems, I do really like!

Now things have gone south! It won't reboot! Before this, it was saying that there was no RAM, to uninstall a program to solve this problem. Since I had just done a hard reboot, I knew it could not be loaded up with too many programs!
I decided to do a soft reset, using the reboot from the new task manager. I realized that it had started to reboot but was hung up on the HTC Excalibur Energy Star Compliant screen (the new black screen in the NRG Rose rebuild.)
It is still there and I have tried to do a hard reset using the WIKI instructions but still hangs in the same place. I can't get past this screen. I perfectly realize that, should this continue, I am Screwed! HELP! I can't make a connection to reflash even!
Thanks in Advance!
10 pm: I did the hard reset following Stylez instructions, it is still being a pain, I may have to do another hard reset to get things back. I am able to send and receive SMS messages and sync up again, to some extent but things are not as they were yesterday even. Not sure what to make of this.

Okay, this is not much fun, I did a hard reset, installed minimal programs. Now not hitting the internet and it shuts off randomly. I could not get it rebooted for the longest time this morning. Finally just decided to start up and ran all day. Tried to check a web site and it was not connecting. I changed the settings and it just shut itself off. I tried to reboot but, 35 minutes later, still not coming up. It goes through the HTC Screen and vibrates then shuts off. ONCE it go all the way to the new Energy star screen but it shut off after that.
Argggggggggggggggggggggg
I just noticed that the little light is flashing red. It will do that if it actually makes it far enough in the boot up process. I have seen this before, the device is reading the battery as dead or almost dead. Since it had a full charge when it shut down, I am pretty sure that this is misreading the battery. I am trying to take the battery out and reinserting to get it to read the battery correctly. I happen to have an extra battery at home and might use that, or put it on the charger, so I can reboot and reflash the Dash.

Phone kept resetting after soft reset!

Ok has that anyone had this issue with their Orbit?
I had noticed that the keyboard was not giving me any predicted text choices while typing, so I tried to change the input method to no avail. So I decided to perform a sft reset to sort the problem.
Oh was I not happy with the result as for over 5 mins all that was happening with my phone was the screen would light up o2 screen, green screen then enter pin and reset and it would do this again and again.
So even after removing the battery for a few minutes not change once I attempted to start the phone. I even reset the device via the button on the side and it made no difference.
I was just getting ready to bite the bullet and sound off the o2 when I remembered reading on here of something similar happening so I searched and found a posting saying to try and press soft reset just after phone started. And guess what it worked after that so what I want to know is why or what I did to get my phone working again?
Any ideas guys, only thing I can add was the phone was plugged in to my workstation USB so was charging when the initial soft reset was performed while using Valksoft's space reclaimer reset option.
Thanks
JC
Ok an update the phone is now doing this everytime it is turned off. And since the last time it occurred I have been unable to get the phone to work.
Any ideas, I believe it could be a registry issue with the phone as I had recently installed a couple of programs that worked fine for a couple of days then while installing a dictionary several programs were uninstalled in error.
So after installing again this problem has arisen. It is possible that this was not th cause as I hae noticed tat the last scheduled back up was on the 22/01/07 so Monday's was not carried out possibly due to this?
my orbit has also this bug. after a soft reset he is booting up till the pin entry and then a boots again and again. Up to 5 times
Yes, my Orbit sometimes needs to reboot 4 times before it will sucessfully bring up the Home Screen. Anyone got any ideas on why???!!!??
I had enough of it doing this so I have done a hard reset and the problem has gone now just need to set everything back as I want it as backup still had the initial issue once it was retored.
I guess it was to do with the registry but not sure what exactly, maybe redundant reg keys etc?
I've experienced same problem on my dutch t-mobile mda compact III.
Happend after installing different programs, but i can't find the exact cause.
when i remove the microsd (on which i installed the programme's) the device starts en doesn't softreset when phone screen shows.
At first i thought it had to do with programs that tried to connect to gprs before even entering the pincode of the phone. But even without pincode it keeps restarting.
Happend on my 1gb microSD once en also on my 2 gb microSD.
Hope that someone knows what the cause is, so i can prevend it from happening.
Resets caused by the Memory Card Fault
Look at the posts regarding the memory card corruption if you back-up the card format it and then put it back everything is fine for a while. Not puttting a My Documents folder on the storage card usually helps with this issue...
rebooting.
hi,
as you well understand there are only 2 possibilities: software and hardware failure.
Surely, you don't want to think about hardware failure, because in this case the solution is to send it back to seller or to service center. Except for the cases caused by battery and sd card. These are 2 elements you can replace on your own easy.
However, "instability" of the device normally caused by installed software.
The first thing you do, like it or not, if you have a problem, hard reset your device.
BACKUP your DATA before hard reset!
You can try to to remove software piece by piece, but could be time consuming thing and not necessarily lead you to a good result.
Radical approach is to return device to "factory state" - hard reset.
If after hard reset you still have a problem with your device like accidentally rebooting, address to service center or ask seller to to replace the good.
regards,
rebooting.
double post.
I had the issue once... card corrupted. Had a back up so formatted the card, put data back in, issue gone.
This has happened to my orbit a couple of times. But I think if I reset by pressing the reset button on the side of the machine it only resets once. Resetting after installing apps for example from the prompt is bad, do it later by pressing the actual button. This seems to work for me but only time will tell.
my htc p3300 has reset problm
my htc p3300 restarts automatically while im calling or using net it starts autuomatically it goes till green screen where it shows wm 6.1 then restarts again n again i dnt know plz tell me is it software or hardware problm

constant resets on O2 xda orbit

i've had my orbit for around a month and a half now, and it's brilliant other than a few problems.
firstly the only additional programs i've installed are:
SPB Diary
SPB Pocket Plus
I do have tomtom but i haven't re-installed that since my last hard reset.
so the problems are as follows:
every now and then when i try to unlock my phone, it seems to hang, with the screen staying bright but no response no matter what i try - the obvious solution is to soft reset which works 9/10 times
however, occasionally, i get a problem where the soft reset does not work correctly. The O2 screen appears (as expected) but about 1 second after the windows mobile screen appears, the screen goes completely dark and will not come on....
This has happened many times (sometimes on a daily basis) and the only solutaion i had worked out was to hard reset and take it back to factory settings - very annoying having to go through everything altering my settings so frequently following a hrd reset.
This problem also occured just a minute ago. i decided to do a hard reset and plugged the phone into my laptop so i could synchronise all my contacts back on. However i plugged it in before a hard reset was performed. Magically the screen lit back up! i was overjoyed, thinking i'd found a solution! so i unplugged it happily. thinking i wouldn't have to hard reset but the screen goes black as soon as i unplug it from the laptop...
i have since changed the brightness settings so that it's always on full brightness. this seems to have worked and avoided me the hassle of a hard reset. However i fear this is only a temporary solution
So my questions are:
is it common for the Orbit to hang regularly, causing me to perform around 1 soft reset per day??
Are the programs i have listed known to cause such problems?
Also has anyone else had such problems?
I've considered sending the phone back for an exchange for a new orbit? is this a good idea or may i expect the same with another, newer orbit (i've neverr really had a pda/phone before so i'm a little bit of a noob in this area!)
THANKS for any help, will be much appreciated!
CHEERS!
It sounds like a faulty Orbit to me. Although I did run SPB Pocket Plus on my Orbit I found it so sluggish with the Orbits slow processor that I removed it and haven't used it for months.
What happens if you:
1) Hard reset
2) Remove Active sync from your computer by the usual PC "add/remove" programs, and then go into the appropriate PC directory and manually remove what's left
3) Re-boot PC
4) Reinstall Active sync (which version are you using? I found AS 4.2 stable in a Win XP Home environment, syncing with Outlook 2002, then more latterly with Outlook 2007
5) Just synchronise your Outlook basics i.e. Contacts, Calendar, Tasks and nothing else.
6) If you use a Micro SD card install the HTC SD Card patch (see links elswhere in the forum for the patch)
If this setup is stable for a day or two, then try adding sometheng else back on, avoiding Pocket Plus for the moment.
If the basic setup is unstable, I suggest your Orbit is faulty. Mine runs quite stably, and currently running in a Vista Ultimate environment without problem.

Can a Moderator please remove this duplicate, I've no idea why it happened!
i have good news (kind of)! after upping the backlight in system settings the screen does not appear to go blank anymore.
i tested this by turning the brightness down - the screen (almost) instantly went blank and would not come back on after a soft reset.. however i took it home, plugged it in (my settings are for full brightness when attatched to a power source, in the test i only changed the brightness when not connected to a power source) re-adjusted the brightness and it works fine again now - in the past, this would have called for a hard reset due to the screen refusing to come on!
I've since found another thread on the forum from another user who seemed to have the screen going blank problem, he/she also cited turning up the brightness (even though that sounds obvious!) as the solution - which is strange as the screen doesn't go dimmer as such, it goes completely black, i cannot see anything at all!
however i have had a crash still...
to answer the above, i am running:
AS 4.2, as mentioned
XP media centre edition
AMD Turion 64 X2
and i have installed the SD corruption fix , even when i first got the phone and hadn't installed it SD never corrupted though (newer build maybe??)
I don't really use outlook to sync emails anyway - the only things i sync are the basics that u mentioned (including notes as well, sorry). i don't think there is much point in doing a hard reset as i think i only cleared everything around 2/3 days ago.
i will however remove spb pocket plus for the mean while, do u think i should also remove spb diary whilst i'm at it to ensure the device is completely clean?
i would like to point out however pocket plus is not running all that slow at all... the reason i installed pocket plus was for the closing of a program when the "x" is clicked, rather than minimising them (as is standard!).
Anybody know any registry fixes for this so i need not install any additional programs to access this feature? or at a push, a smaller program that offers only a minimal set of features including this specific one?
One thing i have noticed, is that the more programs i install the more likely it is to crash, this seems trend seems to occur irregardless of which particular software i have installed (which is why, for the moment, i havent even reinstalled tomtom - i'm just leaving all the installation and maps on my SD card for when i need them!)
The problem is, as of yet, i have not worked out whether previously i had to hard reset simply because the screen didn't come and i had not resolved this issue yet, on or due to something else - however, each time i had to hard reset the screen would go dark and unresponsive! As i said though, the stalls and soft resets continue for the time being!
thanks for the continued help
D'OH!
screen just went blank, and no response from device, guess my solution of upping the brightness settings has only improved the problem, not resolved it!
ARGH!

Total System Failure

A few weeks ago, I flashed my wm5 rom to wm6 because whenever I used to soft reset the device, it would not turn on again without faking a hard reset and then canceling out. WM6 worked perfectly out of the gate for the first few weeks. I use the following extensively.
-- SPB Finance - stored on main memory
-- SPB Backup - backups stored on storage card
-- SPB Insight - content on storage card
-- PCM Keyboard 0.9
-- Resco Explorer
-- MS Reader
-- BatteryStatus
-- Direct Push on 24/7
-- Overclocked to 283
I powered the device on and noticed the signal strength was quite low, and it tried to connect to GPRS, but was failing. I clicked "Hide", and immediately, full white screen, and complete lockup. I didn't panic yet, and soft reset the device. It got to the green win mobile screen and then nothing... completely dead device, no lights... nothing.
I tried everything possible, including leaving the battery out for 20 min, but no luck at all. Then I tried to hard reset the device... but it said something about wiping the fat table, and it reboot, and I noticed on the main O2 splash screen, it would give the IPL, SPL, and no GSM radio version... and then would reboot again. I tried hard reseting a few times and each time the same thing!
When I soft reset the device, the orange message light would turn on, but the LCD would not power up, and then it would just stay that way. Plugging in the charger would cause the device to charge.
I tried removing the storage card, but no luck. Then for whatever reason I tried a hard reset again and this time it worked! Almost... When the reset was complete, I could not get any phone signal. The phone would keep trying to connect, then disconnect and disable itself, then try again every 2 seconds or so. It was as if the radio wasn't there anymore. No matter what SIM I put in, no radio, even though a TYTN sitting beside me got full signal on any SIM I threw at it.
I decided to re-flash the official ROM from my laptop, and now I had the radio working... but the phone would not charge, and activesync would not work. The USB was missing. When I tapped the battery icon, it said "unknown power level" and that was that.
After a soft reset, USB was back, and the device managed to stabilize. I reduced the overclock to 260, and it has been running fine ever since. I loaded all the programs back again except for SPB Insight. Reason is after installing this program previously, I would tether the device to the computer to sync the channels... and it would... but at random, it would mess up my direct push/activesync so that when the device was un-tethered, direct push would not work. I'm a bit worried of putting that program back on.
I've noticed a slew of disabled orbit threads lately, and just wanted to add my experience to this.
N.

SLOW and my contacts are not showing, but are there if someone calls?

This is the third time I have had this problem. Randomly my phone slows down to a halt, the data connection does not work, most setting icons take 10 minutes to load if they do at all yet my texts still work.
There are NO apps running in the task manager.
I have removed most of my programs.
My mods are just removing the TF3D crap, nothing serious.
My stock task manager icon is missing from the top right.
and when I rebooted the phone I would get two errors, one with opera and the other with ~pcom-something.exe"
The other times I reset to unit to "factory out of the box" but I am sick of resetting up the phone with my apps, mods and such.
Has anyone seen this before?
What rom do you have on your phone ? What do you mean by removing all the tf3d crap? And have you flashed different roms without using task29 in between? It sounds like its time to task29 and reflash.
Sorry, I removed the TF3D stuff with mostly registry edits. I am still on a stock 6.1 rom.
Well, it could be pretty work-intensive to try and track down exactly whats causing your slowdowns and freezes, and since you have had to keep on hard resetting it, I would think that you dont really have much to lose by flashing a new rom. If you like the stock 6.1, you could just download it from the Windows Mobile Rom Developement subforum. Alls you would have to do is hard spl your phone and then flash it, it should take less than an hour start to finish, including downloading the rom.
Also:
My stock task manager icon is also missing from the top right.
and when I rebooted the phone I would get two errors, one with opera and the other with ~pcom-something.exe"
I can set this back to a stock ROM with the phone itself and I have all my apps on my card. Doing all the registry things is a pain only because I did not memorize them... YET, haha.
Is there a better task manager to see whats eating up resources?
If you're running the ROM that actually came stock on the Tilt II, then the hot fixes for the issues you are describing can be found here on HTC's website.
http://www.htc.com/us/support/tilt-2-att/downloads/
I'm on verizon, will it matter?
Mother F-er.
Just rebooted to try and get the errors again and instead got this:
"The device is unable to boot because either you have turned off the device incorrectly or tired to install an application from untrusted source.
Press Volume Up to reset your device or press any other button to cancel.
The operation will delete all of your personal data and restore the device to it's factory default settings."
I guess my decision is made, but wow I am not happy. This phone may go into a lake.
... edit:
Volume up does not do anything. AWEsome.
Yeah it matters, here are some Hot fixes for you're touch pro II. Don't know if they will help ya though: http://www.htc.com/www/supportdownloadlist.aspx?p_id=250&act=sd&cat=all
I took the battery out again and put it back in. Same message and the volume up did not work again.
So I pressed volume up about 100 times then held down the power button. Nothing changed.
Then.... I slide open the keyboard and closed it. Put the unit down and about 45 seconds later I heard all 100 volume up presses in a row. The stock WM volume menu was over the windows boot screen, and then the task bar showed up. Then the unit shut off and rebooted but took forever. It looked normal , but SLOW.
Now:
"A problem has occurred with Opera9.exe"
then:
"A problem has occurred with cprog.exe"
WTF is going on. I have not installed/uninstalled ANYthing for weeks.
set the phone to factory defaults last night and changed everything back. Meh.
Thanks for the ideas guys and I will be doing those "hotfixes" very soon!
Cheers,
Dan
Well, this phone is doing it yet again.
It barely works.
everytime I press something it takes between 5 seconds and 1 minute to do it.
i have no signal
most programs do not even try to start
resets change nothing (done this about 100 times today)
What the hell is going on with this phone? This was just as random. Was working as normal until around noon and then it just slowed way down and I could not make calls or answer them.
Grr.
so:
when I reboot the phone, I have the green start up screen for ~5 minutes.
the phone does not work after it fully starts up.
I can not open "remove programs"
I do not have the task manager in the top task bar, but when I go into settings and open task manager, there is nothing running.
I run "cleanRAM" on level 3 and there is no change.
It is still very slow I have not installed anything new at all, so this sudden change reasoning is unknown. This may be my last windows phone as I am growing tired of these random major failures.
Well verizon sent me a new phone.
*PHUCK*, its WM6.5 and I hate it.

[Q] Poor Response Time and Reboots?

Hi all
I'm running DeFroST 6.1a, stock DF kernel, and radio 5.11.05.14. Please bear with me because this might be a little long, as I try to explain everything I have done which landed me into a somewhat sticky situation.
A few weeks ago, I flashed the JAMT theme by ClassicalGas, and what I noted was the sudden loss of LED notification (and I don't seem to be the only one, actually). So I poke around, search the forum, and one user said he had gotten the LED notifications to work again by extracting the theme files from the JAMT framework-res.apk into the DF's framework-res and flashing the whole DF again.
I decided to try my hand at it, did a NAND, wiped, then flashed the "modified" DF - which caused my phone to be stuck in a bootloop. No biggie, just have to restore my NAND. I wipe, then when I'm about to restore my NAND, I get hit with
Code:
Error : run 'nandroid-mobile.sh' via adb!
Which, after some googling, could mean a couple of things, like the checksum is wrong, or battery is low, etc. But before I do anything, I hit the wrong button in recovery, then my ROM boots up (wiped). The first thing I realize during the starting phone set up application is that about half of my screen is not responding, but once I get out of the initial set-up, all functionality returns
I power down, charge my phone a good bit, _wiped_, then I did a NAND restore , without any problems this time, restoring my original problem free-state, and everything seemed fine
A couple of days later, on vacation, I was playing a Tower Defence game on my phone, and the whole thing froze on me. I popped out the battery. This is real strange because that game had always worked fine before.
I then try a bit of Zenonia. At certain points, my phone freezes up. Characters on screen, monsters, etc are all still moving around mind you. All EXCEPT me. There seems to be no response from touch whatsoever. I get a little frustrated and press the "home" button as well as the "power" button.
After some waiting, my phone screen goes off. I find out that it has went back to the lock screen, and when I unlock, its back to the home screen, with Zenonia still running in the background.
I inferred that my phone's response has been super delayed for some reason. It happens for over a week, sometimes, seemingly to resolve itself after a good wait, and sometimes never (which requires me to pop out the battery). Sometimes, it "hangs" so badly that my phone itself began force restart. Also, out of all the times it restarted, there was _once_ it was stuck in the bootanimation.
And I also have noticed, if my phone has been on the whole day, at night, my SMS app (stock) seems to move very slowly - in terms of when I type out my reply, the phone seems to lag behind and cannot keep up with my usual typing speed. Even pressing the "reply area" requires me to wait for some time until the keyboard pops out (not stock, but never had problems with it before).
Sometimes, unlocking the phone when I last left it as the SMS screen would also cause some lag when I unlock. Reboots from the power menu seems to clear it up (until the next time it happens again).
Last night I tried some Kongregate Arcade, which needed flash. At some point of playing, whenever I was about to receive an SMS, the phone seem to _not_ response to my touch once again, while baddies on the flash game still continued to move around and hit me.
At first I thought it might have been a problem with SetCPU's governor (does interactive cause problems? Regardless, SetCPU was not a problem before the NAND). No matter, I changed the governor of my screen off AND my "normal" profile, but still no dice.
Also, could it be a memory issue? I doubt it, I hadn't installed anything else before and after the NAND, and I manually clear any unwanted running processes (and I have been, since I've gotten the phone).
So, dear XDA, what exactly is wrong with my phone? I hope its not hardware, and I'm hoping that flashing a new ROM might help, but I haven't done so until I have heard some opinions :/
P/S: Probably at wit's end here...
Edit: I'm not sure if its related, but once when I pressed the home button when all forms of input didn't work (buttons, touch screen) when I was playing Zenonia, Launcher Pro was "about" to FC, giving me the option to kill it or to wait.
le bump with a summarized, easy on the eyes version.
1 )Bad attempt at theming DF 6.1a leads to bootloop.
2 )Wiped in preparation to restore nandroid, but accidentally boot up the device instead (boots to a "wiped" Defrost without all the bells and whistles). Top half of screen during the google account setup, wifi setup, time zone set up not responding. Problem goes away after exiting set up.
3 ) Wipe again in recovery, tried to restore NAND once more, but "Error : run 'nandroid-mobile.sh' via adb!"
4 ) Power down, charge phone, successfully restored NAND.
5 ) Phone is fine until I play games (which worked fine before). Some games totally freeze up the phone, while others are still running (monsters moving on screen and attack my unmoving character), but all forms of input is not recognized (button pressing, touch screen pressing, etc).
6) These "half-freezes" (inputs do not work, but the game still is running) also occur when playing flash games, right around the time I'm about to receive an SMS.
6 ) Whatever commands I pressed while the phone was "frozen" registers when the phone "unfreezes".
7 ) Sometimes freezes cause the phone to reboot, sometimes have to pull out the battery.
8 ) If phone has been on the whole day (regardless of heavy or light usage), stock SMS app seems to slow down and become unresponsive around late evening. A reboot fixes this.
9 ) Once, launcher pro was not responding, and I was given the choice to wait or kill it, when the phone recovered from a "half-freeze" (unrelated?)
Not a setcpu problem, because I have been using the same profiles since I got the phone, but I did play around with the governors to see if that changed anything.
Not a memory issue, because I dont install much, and I regularly manually kill unwanted processes.
Not sure why your phone acts like this and don't know a simple solution. But before tracking down the error, it's mostly and surely faster to install another ROM or just reflash this ROM and only install the apps you want to try - saves you some headaches... Also try to repartition/reformat your sdcard. I too had some issues with lagging system but i was only able to resolve it by flashing another ROM. I don't think it's an hardware related issue though...
Thanks for the response
Just flashed a new ROM. Gonna poke around and see what happens. Will report back.
Whats the best way to repartition an SD? Instead of Gparted of course. I'm not on Linux (my ubuntu installation went bad).
There are definitely thread about this, but before I flashed DF 6.1a (coming from DF 6.0e), I switched my recovery to AmonRa, selected ext2 partition of 0mb (because I had a 256 partition before, and then I wanted a 512mb) and then partitioned it again with a 512mb.
Honestly, it doesn't sound like the best way to do it, but that was what some threads said.
EDIT: Phone seems fine now on GV 1.1 How could a nandroid affect the phone so badly? hrm.
Partitioning with AmonRa's recovery works perfectly fine for me. You just have to set the ext2 partition to the desired size (i use 1024 as recommended on other threads - at least for sense roms). Afterwards upgrade ext2 to etx3 and maybe ext3 to ext4 (i have done this).
I too had to throw away some nandroid backups and start clean. Don't know why. I thought it has something to do with my "experience"...
