Question weird screen glitch on status bar SM-S908E - Samsung Galaxy S22

greetings,
recently acquired a brand new SM-S908E.
After a couple of weeks of usage I have this odd black area covering part of the status bar. Phone hasn't been dropped or anything.
It doesn't show up in a screenshot.
I will attach a picture.
Thoughts? From what I understand it may be a hardware fault.. hoping not as claiming warranty is not likely to be possible for me unfortunately

Defective screen, let me guess you bought it cheap from a reseller instead of authorized Samsung store

Looks like some notch option in the developer settings. Maybe see if developer settings are enabled and if so you can look for something like simulate a display with a cutout. Maybe that helps.

[Q] Screen off center?

So I have my DHD since Oct, and I just recently noticed the screen seems to be off center, or misaligned. It's not a big issue, but I'm curious if others are like mine. If you look at the pics you can see the black boarders on each side of the screen, and the one on the right is bigger, but it's not just a thicker boarder, but if you look close (if you look at yours you may need to angle it in light to see the true boarder and the emptyness) you can see the screen seems to be positioned more to the left, and it seems to go from top to bottom (meaning at the top the boarder is right next to the screen, and the gap gets bigger as it gets to the bottom). Inside the boarder there is black empty space, but only on the right side. The left side is right next to the boarder. It almost seems like the screen underneath the glass is shifted. I hope I didn't confuse anyone, but I'm just wondering if it is misaligned there may be a way to fix it.

Really? Why would they put more space on the right side? I'm not talking about the space from the bar with the apps, phone, and settings to the end of the wallpaper, but the space from the wallpaper to the painted black boarder on the glass.

oh i can see it now, no i dont have that black border maybe email htc about it?
Mine also same...right side gap and today i give to service centre .
first the updated software but solution. Then they received and said to change LCD. Now waiting to come...from service center..
Wow, never really noticed about this, until i saw this thread, mine is also slightly off center to the left.. But not noticeable and i can live with it.. very hard to see the differences.. less than a milimeter..
I've just noticed this on mine, only had it since launch! Mine looks almost as if its mounted at a slight anti clockwise angle.
Looks like HTC QC team were on holiday when the DHD was released!
Miny is a tiny bit off centre too, although I would have never noticed if it was not mentioned here. I would be prepared to live with it but I also have a spec of dust under the screen since new and I also have the camera blur problem, so this squint screen if the final straw for me... it's going back to HTC. Hopefully with these 3 problems I will get a new handset from them rather than a repair. There's only so much you can polish a turd

Yeah I just noticed it on mine about a week ago. I probably wouldn't have, but I was trying different cases, and one made it look funny, so I looked closer. At first I thought it was the case, but then saw it was the screen. Without the case on I don't really notice it. Funny you say that about the spec of dust. I have one also. on the opposite side of the volume rockers. I can only see it on a pure white background. Thanks for you input. I was just wondering how may were like that. It seems like more than just me.
Reply from HTC
I emailed HTC about the screen being off center, and I included the pics form this thread, and even gave the link. Here is what they replied with:
"Thank you for your inquiry regarding the display on your HTC Desire HD device.
If this issue coincided with the installation of a third party application, please remove the application and evaluate the result. If removal of the application appears to resolve the issue, the application is likely the cause and you should contact the application provider for further assistance.
If no third party application is involved, please soft reset your phone by powering it off, removing the battery, waiting ten seconds, and then reinserting the battery and restarting the device.
If your device's display continues to be off center, I recommend you restore it to its factory default settings by performing a factory data reset. This will permanently erase all installed programs and data files on your phone; you will therefore want to first back up all files to your storage card or to a third party application from the Android Market. Use HTC Sync to back up Outlook contacts and calendar files, or Google Sync to back up your Google contacts and calendar. Calendar events are color-coded: green for Outlook, blue for Google, and orange for Exchange. You can back up text and picture messages by forwarding them to an email address. It will not affect files on your storage card.
To reset your phone, please press Home > MENU and then tap Settings > SD & phone storage > Factory data reset > Reset phone > Erase everything.
If a factory data reset does not resolve your device's issue, I recommend you contact our HTC Return Merchandise Authorization (RMA) and Repair Department for further assistance. Please contact them by dialing 1-888-617-1113. Their business hours are 8:00 AM to 8:00 PM Eastern Time seven days per week. Please have the device serial number (S/N) available when you contact them. You can find the S/N in the battery compartment of your phone.
If you need to contact us again, please include the device S/N in your response."
I guess maybe a factory reset will reposition the screen?
And who says Customer Service responses are scripted.
Of course, a factory reset will magically reposition the screen. Why didn't we think of that.
factory reset not work for me..........my desire hd sent to HTC head office.
You guys want QC issues? On the first DHD I had 2 weeks ago, the speaker grill above the screen was not straight. It was on a 2-3 degree slant and was visible, especially when using it with a case.

I have that too. The left side of the grill is almost touching the bottom right by the screen while the right side is up a bit more. You can really see more of the aluminum in between the right side than the left, so I have a dust particle under the screen, the screen is off center, and the grill is slanted. I'm calling HTC to get a new one for sure.
UPDATE
Well well well. I sent my phone to HTC to fix my issues. Just got it back today. 100% perfect! The screen is positioned beautifully. They even removed the one little spec of dust that I had trapped there. I really thought it would come back with a note saying they couldn't fix anything. I am very impressed. I guess with the screen being off center is what made the SIM cover be off also. When I looked at the phone from the front the right side SIM cover was in more than the left. Well now it's 100% perfect! The only thing they didn't (couldn't) fix is the speaker grill being at a slight angle. Since it's CNC'd into the aluminium body they would have had to replace the entire body. I can live with that now that the rest is perfect. Oh and I know it's my same phone since I made little tiny marks where only I could see them, and they are still there now.
could you stop to report problems in your devices? i'm pretty sure if i'll look further i'll find some issues too, and i will blame it on you! =oP
until now i didn't find anything, but the glass of the right side of the screen is a little bit off of the frame and everytime i need to pull down the notification bar i feel like i'm fingering paper... weird thing!

LOL Yeah mine had that too. On both sides. Like the screen was lower than the frame, but now everything is flush and even. I got my phone originally out of the second batch HTC made, so maybe they corrected all the problems, because now it's perfect.
i told you so, a issue just appears today! =o\ i'm stuck in car mode, according to my searches, a short in charger cable let you mobile feels like you plugged in a car dock, what active car mode... but, now it believes i'm in a dock even with cable unplugged... i guess i should create a thread about it! =o\

[Q] Dark Blue Vertical Line of Pixels - Not Covered with TEP?

I have had my EVO since August and had the screen replaced twice for dust under the digitizer this Fall. Latest screen (003 Nova) has developed a blue vertical line about an inch from the right edge of the screen. This 1 pixel wide vertical line is a dark blue color regardless of the surrounding background. Seems like it is more/less noticeable depending on the temperature of the phone but has not shown any signs of going away for about a month now.
Took the phone into a Sprint store and they said it is deemed cosmetic and thus not covered for replacement under TEP, regardless of whether or not it is a hardware issue since it does not impair the functionality of the device. Phone has not been dropped and is in otherwise immaculate condition.
Anyone have similar experiences and/or possible solutions? Thanks.
That's not cosmetic, it's a defect. I would replace it in my store.
Sent from my HTC Evo 4G on the Now Network.
Well I guess this means I should try another store when I get a chance.
Hopefully another store views it correctly as a hardware defect. It's pretty annoying to look at the line every day.

That is absolutely ridiculous. I would replace it in my service center. I would call customer service and let them know exactly what that service center told you. If you did not physically damage the phone, and there is no water damage, then the phone should function EXACTLY as it did the day you bought it.

[Q] Faint vertical lines on screen

Hi guys, I don't quite now how to explain this, but I'll give it my best. I've had my g3 for almost two weeks now and I've started to notice very faint vertical lines on the screen when on a white background, I can see them right now while writing this. It also happens in the settings screen. I'm not certain if there's something wrong or if it's always been this way and I hadn't noticed. Has anyone else noticed this? I wouldn't even say the line have a colour, it's just an alternate of darkish and white lines. I could just be looking too close, but I'm not certain.
Also I have noticed a slight black blur when using knock code, like when you would touch an old lap top screen, although a lot fainter. It only happens in one little section of the screen, but I noticed it when using the white stock wallpaper. It only seems to happen when I tap for knock code and I have noticed it when I apply slight pressure to that area. I have been delicate with the touch screen since, but I don't believe I used much pressure in the first place.
Hope I explained it well enough. Anybody else noticed anything similar? Am I being paranoid and these things normal?
There is large discussion on the "lines." I see them too, but think it is a result of the resolution itself. Nobody can say/prove what it is AFAIK.
If I press real hard on the screen in certain spots, it seems like I can replicate the second thing you're talking about. If yours does it when just lightly tapping, I'd exchange it.

Hi,
Thanks for replying. I'm glad that the 'lines' aren't just in my imagination. Can you point me in the direction of the discussion on the lines?
I bought the phone online, but took into the store today to compare it to their demo model. It definitely doesn't have the same issue when I tap it. The salesperson wasn't sure what it was but she's going to send it in for repair/replacement. It sucks... now I'm going to have to wait till I get it back. The shop said they would have replaced it on the spot if I hadn't bought it online but from the store too.
Hopefully they get it back to me quick.
I hope no one else has this problem.
I think it's not the resolution itself, it's more about the software or kernel or something, LG implemented an oversharping thing which makes texts appear too sharp, but it's not only about texts, it's about the overall display! Notice when you scroll through LG Health page, you can see the lines moving, or changing in visibility, etc..
I have the same issue on my phone. There are very faint vertical lines most apparent on white and green colors and they seem to be rainbow colored. I have seen this issue with the at&t, t-mobile, and sprint versions of the G3 which my friends have.
It's not caused by the over sharpening effect because even after I flashed a fix for it, it still appears.
Almost as if it's like one of those 3d card/poster effects.
Hi guys,
is there any news on any fix on this?
I have the same problem. Should I RMA my phone?

Dark stripe with low brightness

Hi,
I bought recently a new Samsung galaxy tab s4 and the first time I watched a movie laying on bed with the lights off (low screen brightness), I noticed a dark stripe on the screen...
https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=TqcpX6g0ciE
Well... Is this normal? I guess it's not. Should I return it?
Thanks!
I have this too on my Samsung Note 4. It is a common defect of AMOLED displays, where the temperature and luminance degrades the pixels over time, increasing the probability for burn-in.
You can try to find which app caused this, by matching up the dark area with the app contents. For me it was YouTube and 8 Ball Pool that I was using for long periods at full brightness --- when playing a fullscreen video or game, the screen will NOT turn off. I kept forgetting this, and went to the bathroom or kitchen leaving the screen on!
Did you buy it second hand, used? The previous owner or you may have likely used full brightness and showing a static image for long periods.
There is nothing you can do to fix it. The S4 is still a new flagship model so you may be able to get a replacement.
Well... I bought the tablet two months ago, brand new, and I have barely used it. Like... twice a week or so.
My sister has the same model, used it a lot more and it hasn't developed dark stripes.
I cannot find a match except, maybe, the Google search bar. I guess I will try to get it returned. I cannot accept this on a 500€ tablet. Should I know this before hand, I'd bought a Huawei tablet for half the price.
Or maybe I'm overreacting and I simply got a defective unit.

Thanks what was your brightness set at ? Man in the video link you posted the text at the bottom looked crazy bright ? On mine it looks fine please note i did move the image like you did my brightness is set at dead center on the second icon so about 25% or 30% ish (im guessing)
Also i set the brightness half way, and i do not get that black bar!
I had the same problem on the tab S3. Samsung text said it was a known issue, affecting about 30% of all screens. It is replaceable under warranty. Eventual getting through the first round of tech support, ask for support team to handle your issue. My tab S4 had the same issue, but it wasn't as noticeable. I accidentally folded into a fold-up couch and demolished it, whenever I got a replacement under AT&T insurance policy, the tablet I got had a perfect screen! I'm taking has best care of it as I possibly can, as it is literally the first perfect screen I've seen on the S Series tablets. It may be frustrating to deal with the 5 to 10 day turnaround time, but as an artist who actually works on Gray backgrounds quite often it was worth the effort.

Thank you for testing this on your tablet. Actually, the overall brightness was about 15-20%. But that was enough for a dark/dim room.

Oh, do you have any references for this?
Ouch. I can feel the pain of the couch event.
Well, my tablet came today from the tech support... They wiped the memory and cleaned some greasy fingerprint marks.
But they did not solve the problem. I guess they even tried to find out what was wrong.
I'm starting to be unhappy with Samsung...

No direct reference as it was a tech I was speaking with on the phone. Just ask specifically to be forwarded to support team. Then you will only be speaking with one service rep, and they will be in direct contact with the tech that handles your tablet. They can even ensure it goes to the repair center closest to you.
Well... I'm feeling like this story needs an end.
I actually send the tablet to the repair center and they changed the screen. The lady at the store were I purchased the tablet told me that the problem was a loose flex cable inside the tablet, but... Who really knows? The repair sheet doesn't mention that.
Anyway, the tablet is better now, but not 100%... It still shows a slight darkening towards a corner of the screen, barely noticeable under normal circumstances but that does indeed shows with test images. The good thing is that this is not a dark band anymore.

How to tell if your G8 is brand new or refurbished?

Just bought an LG G8 off Ebay. Seller sold it as new and unused and had a 100% positive rating. The phone looks and feels new - no scratches on the body, works really fast. Except for this:
https://preview.redd.it/smamclrvzo191.jpg
Personally, I've never seen such a thing on a phone screen before. Has anyone else experienced it on their G8?
Meanwhile, in the phone's hidden menu the battery cycle count shows 0 cycles so far and the battery health is rated 'good'. Not sure if these stats can be somehow reset and/or edited in any way. I also managed to register my G8 purchase on the LG Canada website using the phone's serial number without any issues.
Therefore - how can you tell if you're really getting a brand new phone, or a refurbished/renewed one? Among other things, my biggest concern is water resistance - as far as I know, refurbished phones are no longer water-resistant. And I had to get rid of my old HTC U11 exactly because of excessive water damage that messed up the screen.
Image forbidden.
The OS version should correspond to its manufactured date.
Never assume any "waterproof" phone is waterproof... a lot of people with destroyed phones who did.
Sorry, there you go.
P.S. If a phone gets a factory reset, wouldn't that rollback the OS to its original factory state/date as well?

No, a factory reset only erase the data on the user data partition. All upgrades stay intact.
In settings, phone, software information will give the firmware build dates. Not sure how LG handles that though.
Run Screen Test on it, and see how the display looks.
Ran the Screen Test app, swiped across the various colors and patterns and didn't notice any other screen issues, apart from the one near the notch. For some reason, the app blacks out the notch area and the greenish spot is barely visible at all, but you could still see its bottom side on almost every color, if you know where to look. Don't have another device lying around at the moment to take a photo, unfortunately.
Other than that, the software is Android 9 with Android security patch level March 1, 2019. The original box in which the phone came with says "Manufactured: 03/2019". IMEI written on the box and in the phone's settings is also a match. The only box issue was the broken seal.

It sounds to me like the original owner saw that pixel issue and decided not to keep it. Unfortunately, devices like this do get sold as 'new', or 'open box' or etc etc.
It's very difficult now to buy a phone with all of the shenanigans going on. Phones are so expensive you'll clearly find some unscrupulous people doing business. I doubt the phone has been refurbished though. Even a refurb from the mfg isn't going to 'reset' everything to zero to make it look new. That would be illegal.
Maybe contact the mfg to see if they can do anything about the screen issue. Are returns allowed on the device? I'd consider that also as the screen issue might be something I'd constantly be noticing, but maybe not for you? Personal decision there.
Personally, I prefer the blacked out notch visually - I even blacked it out when setting up the phone and noticed the spot a little after. The issue is that I don't seem to be able to remove the notch with all apps - Facebook and Chrome, for example, still whiten out the area around the notch and the spot becomes visible. I'm still on Android 9 though, so this could potentially be fixed in future upgrades. You would probably know better if that is the case.
About the returns thing - return for technical defects seem to be always allowed on eBay. Also, I've paid through PayPal and there's some buyer protection there as well, as far as I know. It was an overseas order though (US>EU) and organizing a return might be a bit of a hassle. Not to mention that I've paid import duties as well - and I'm not sure if those are refundable at all. Maybe I should ask the seller for a partial refund to compensate for the issue, as this would be the easiest solution.

I would consider returning it. I don't like being screwed around with...
The detect may spread as it may be a problem with the display control matrix rather than a pixel(s).
The fact it wasn't still factory sealed tells the story. Also at that age the battery will have a 50% charge or lower from being stored so long.
I got my new Samsung N10+ from here. He answers his phone and seems like a good guy.
The N10+ box was factory sealed and the real deal. He buys lots of unsold phones and resells them. I blew off a lot of other vendors as the the level of trust was higher with this one. He's got none of your model in stock though or even listed suggesting available new models are rare. Call him, see what he says. He may have a better plan.

Of course. No one likes that. Normally, I would return it as well - but if I do that now, I'm basically writing off 25% of its value that I've paid already for import VAT at the customs. And that makes the situation more complex.
I got in touch with LG's local authorized repair shop and will go there in person on Monday. Ironically, I had my TV's backlight replaced by the same repair shop just a few months ago. Based on their diagnostics and price quote, we'll see if it actually makes sense to keep the device.
Just rechecked the seller's profile on eBay - still 100% positive feedback, not a single negative review on his profile, including for the same model that I purchased. Apart from anything else, this should mean that he would be helpful and flexible enough in resolving this, in order to avoid a bad review.
