I have had my EVO since August and had the screen replaced twice for dust under the digitizer this Fall. Latest screen (003 Nova) has developed a blue vertical line about an inch from the right edge of the screen. This 1 pixel wide vertical line is a dark blue color regardless of the surrounding background. Seems like it is more/less noticeable depending on the temperature of the phone but has not shown any signs of going away for about a month now.
Took the phone into a Sprint store and they said it is deemed cosmetic and thus not covered for replacement under TEP, regardless of whether or not it is a hardware issue since it does not impair the functionality of the device. Phone has not been dropped and is in otherwise immaculate condition.
Anyone have similar experiences and/or possible solutions? Thanks.
That's not cosmetic, it's a defect. I would replace it in my store.
Sent from my HTC Evo 4G on the Now Network.
Well I guess this means I should try another store when I get a chance.
Hopefully another store views it correctly as a hardware defect. It's pretty annoying to look at the line every day.

That is absolutely ridiculous. I would replace it in my service center. I would call customer service and let them know exactly what that service center told you. If you did not physically damage the phone, and there is no water damage, then the phone should function EXACTLY as it did the day you bought it.

What is considered a light leak? Is this considered a light leak? It is not noticeable unless I look for it specifically.

Also, could I exchange a phone I bought from Best Buy at a Sprint Store? Apparently, Sprint tele-sales can't do anything about Best Buy orders.
Yep that looks like light leakage to me. Pic could be better tho. I read some people say that sprint told them it was normal. Its clearly not

Is the light leak normally there or at the bottom of the screen where it meets the black side casing?

I think it can be both. Mine is anyway...I have slight light leakage at the bottom, and also some on top of the buttons where it meets the screen like the OP. It's really visible in the dark and discolors the bottom section of the screen.
I have light leak above the soft keys that leaks onto the screen like the OP's pic, but nothing where the glass meets the case. I don't feel any play in the glass either. I think I'll give it a few more days then decide what to do, maybe the glass will start coming up.

Same light leakage issue. The biggest problem I have with my phone is the crappy battery cover (003 Epson). I'm not bothered at all by the leakage, but this 0.5mm flaked up battery cover is making me uneasy.
I'll probably wait a week for a new shipment before swapping my phone (or could even wait for the white Evo)
my light leakage is at the very bottom of the phone and very little screen separation but enough for me to exchange the phone but not enough for me to do it in a hurry! im afraid im gonna get one that is unrootable and root is a big deal for me
So does anyone know if you can exchange your phone at Sprint if you bought at BB?
I called Sprint and they told me to take it to Best buy where I bought it. I'm not sure if this is the problem that everyone is having..
I have the 0002 screen
Edit: I tried posting a pic but it wont let me
I light leakage below the action buttons where the screen meets the edge of the phone. Should I have it replaced?

I have been on the phone with both places, Sprint says to take back to BB because it is inside the 30 days and BB says to call Sprint because they have 0 phones in stock to exchange (saying if they did they would) Back and forth so if BB doesn't get any phones before 30 days which the guy told me the first ones they get and it is inside 30 they will hold for me to exchange. I f not and it goes over 30 days I will deal with Sprint. Which I still don't get because if I have a problem before my 30 days it is not my fault you do not have stock so it should be exchangeable until you have phones 30 days or not, I am still tempted to email the district man of BB in my area and express my opinion about since we do not have stock that clears them from honoring a 30 day warranty
The Best Buy held thier word and called Sat with a replacement, the exchane was quick. I was satisfied.
I have light leakage and grounding issues. Never bothered me. But I called today and will be getting my replacement tomorrow. Bought from Best Buy.
From the HTC Evo!!
Also, BB extended my 30 day return.
So even better.

Ok ..so far best buy has been king on honoring their 30 day warranty not like Sprint corp stores that will give u bs on problems like these..or will just throw u a refurbished cell...I been w Sprint for 6 yrs and the last 4 times I upgraded I went to best buy and no complaints even radioshack its on sum bs......I had my evo replaced 4 times till 2days ago got a evo w no light leakege at all and good battery cover....

Um.. I'm pretty sure that IS normal? My new HW003 did that out of the box. The light leakage that people are returning their phones for comes around the edges, where the screen meets the main part of the phone.. I don't think this is really an issue.

I've been noticing dust collecting under the top left corner of my screen. Anyone have any suggestions on how to fix this? Or am I goin to have to take it to a Sprint store and have it replaced?
I just noticed the same problem with mine. This is not good for my OCD.
So I'm thinking of bringing my phone in to a Sprint tech to look at the dust under the screen as well as a small area about the size of a pencil's eraser that is brighter than the rest of the screen (Only obvious with white backgrounds).
Would it be a bad idea to show the tech my EVO as is which is rooted? Would they care if they're just looking at the physical screen?
Same thing on my EVO dust top left corner. This is the second one that has done it. Dust shoot plug doesn't help either. I bought something similar to this but it didn't help:

You will have to bring it to a Sprint repair center and have your screen replaced. My phone had dust on the top left corner as well. The Sprint employee told me there was a slight screen separation so he replaced it with a brand new screen. I unrooted my phone before bringing it in.

I was afraid I'd have to do this. Guess I have to weigh my options here. Have a dusty screen or go through the timely process of unrooting, then rooting back and having a fresh screen.

Same here I have TEP so I generally get a new phone about every 6 months so I'm not sure its worth it to bring it in.
Just to let everyone know here is how it all went down.
I called the Sprint repair center and told them about the dust under the screen. Of course they said I would have to bring it in for them to look at, but they could fix it. So I asked the guy about rooted phones he said as long as I am not having software issues he could careless.
So took my phone down at lunch went and ate came back all done. They replaced the entire display. The guy said it was all one piece so they replaced everything. I looked at the old display and I have no idea how the dust is getting in there. He said the displays have 3 revisions mine was a revision 2 replaced it with a 3. So take all this with a grain of salt. Just telling you all what he told me.
He also said he liked my ROM,... nice.
Will that be enough to warrant a replacement from Sprint? It's obviously a manufacturer's defect and a huge cosmetic flaw. Anything else I would have to tell them to get it replaced? I'm covered under the Total Equipment Protection plan, so I know everything other than water damage and total destruction is supposed to be free. My plan is to just say, "Hey, my phone has been like this since I got it, and I didn't think anything of it until I saw my friend's EVO with absolutely no light-leakage and realized what a huge defect this was. I feel this reflects poorly on the build-quality of the launch models, and I would like a new hardware revision if possible."
Edit: My screen glass is also slightly coming off in the lower right-hand corner, so light is even leaking straight out that way as well.
As long as they have a screen in stock, they will fix it for free. Make sure the store you take it to has a service department. They replaced mine for dust under the glass, so actual separation is a no-brainer to me. Mine is also a 002.

What do you mean a "screen in stock?" Are they going to physically replace the glass? There's nothing wrong with the screen itself.
(Damn, I keep hitting "thanks" instead of "quote.")
On my phone there was just dust under the glass. They replaced the whole thing because it is one assembly...LCD, digitizer, and glass including the outer black bezel. When I took mine in the tech said, "let me make sure we have a screen in stock", then said they did and to come back in an hour. Phone was good as new when I returned.
They will fix the glass if they have it in stock. they will take your apart, and reglue a new piece of glass. If they dont, they will order you a refurbished phone, which could have worse leakage than you have now.
I have dust under the screen as well, but haven't taken it in because I don't want to unroot the phone or get a refurb back...
if I call the service center that is near me and they have a screen, can I just make the phone look stock or do I have to unroot?

I took mine in fully rooted and running Fresh with Riptide's theme...not a word was said. Rooting would only be an issue if you were seeking a software related repair. Of course, there are those that say otherwise, so do whatchalike.
I'm running cm nightly, so I'll probably flash a stock look before going in.
Thanks

Hm. Not sure if I want to deal with the hassle of un-rooting and re-rooting if I'm not going to get a new device.

i do not see why they would need to replace the glass as well. im not about to loose my screen protector. i might just buy a lcd on ebay and do it myself. i also have white spots and severe light leakage.

You will definitely not get a new phone. I went through this with them about 2 months ago. I had a launch day Evo that had light leakage and the screen was loose on it. I was told it was pretty much normal in the store and they even told me it was not a known defect, how this is true is beyond me. Anyways, they send a replacement to me and it had worse light leakage than my original so I had to take it to the store to prove this Sprint. After that I had to sit on the phone forever with Customer service and they finally shipped another replacement. Well guess what... it had light leakage as well. So, in the end I took the one that had the least light leakage but it still has some. They are going to want to replace your screen or a refurb. I even went through retention to try and get a new phone which is like the highest up you can go through customer service and they wouldn't even give me a new one. So, if I were you keep what you have because more than likely a replacement is going to have leakage as well. Hope this helps some, but unfortunately HTC likes to crank out Evo's so fast that the quality control isn't the best.
You shouldn't have a problem. Sprint will try to fix it. There are pretty bad light leakage problems from a detached screen causing the glass to rise up and not sit flush. If this is what you are experiencing, Sprint will fix it. The next thing they would do is just give you a refurbished phone or a NIB (new in box). The latter is obviously best but go in. The worst they will do is give your phone back to you and tell you to go through Asurion but I doubt that.
Light leaking is not keeping your phone from working so there would be no replacement.

I might try it. I'm going to be jumping ship on the 20th, anyways. A newer EVO could make a $50 difference on eBay, and it wouldn't matter if my warranty was voided due to being rooted. I'll leave CM6.1 on there for ****s and giggles.

Well I had the light leakage too,I just took a tiny bead of glue, ran it along the edge and everything is fine......you can't even tell where I glued it.problem solved.

I have light leakage on the left and right edges of my screen respectively when the phone is switched from normal to landscape view.
normal view leaks light on the right side , and landscape leaks light on the left side once the leds' switch to adjust homescreen position.
any one else have this problem? it's quite noticeable in a dark environment if you do...
how should i go about correcting this through verizon?
I Know they're going to try and push a refurb on me one way or another, how do i get around this as it's an obvious manufacturing defect and i JUST bought my phone on release date, it's 1 month old....???
please note this is not a screen or vertical light bleed, it is on the outermost left and right edges directly left and right of the home screen buttons and definitely switches sides as the leds switch from normal to landscape direction
I have issues with my charging port loose, I as well bought on April 28th, 1st day, and since I'm outta my 14 day return they will only replace with a refurb, I'm considering doing it now, since most likely the refurb will be one that someone bought and brought back for another phone, so the refurb should be good as new, not to mention there is no way to tell if it's refurbed, my inc1 amoled ive had replaced 6 times and everytime there was no way to tell its refurbed. not too mention if the refurb comes and you're not happy with it, send the refurb back!
Can't say that I notice any light leaks on mine. I'm in a dimly lit area, not a dark area, though. I bought mine a short period after launch.
Refurbs are just as good as new devices. In fact, refurbs generally have better quality control. If I had the option to buy a refurb I2, I would have.
called tech support, the first dumb lady told me to bring it to a store and they will fix the plastic peiece(ya ok) called right back, got this great guy, and sent me out a refurb within 5 min.
Hi, I got this OnePlus 3, it had a very slight pink tint in right half and no tint on left (on white screen) so I got it replaced. Now the replacement is even worse, bottom and right side is much more pink than before, only top left side is fine, even on grey, I can see the top left portion is more bright than rest. What to do guys, I'm afraid third replacement will be even worse, I previously owned Nexus 6 and it had only pink tint in low brightness not this kind of uneven hue. Please suggest something.
Well, there's nothing you can do except replacing it ...
It can't be worse every time, you'll run out of bad luck eventually ?

They may not replace the phone. But they should change the screen again.
Go to the one plus service center.. the ones they own and manage.. not the ones outsourced.
Btw, I have a similar issue.. on specific greys, the left side (about half a inch) seems brighter than the right side. Only on greys. All other Colors are just fine.
I took it to the non-company owned service center, the guy there couldn't really tell the difference as much as I noticed, but he agreed that he can try changing the screen. Though I haven't really gone that route yet since the phone is less than a month old. Will wait for some time and see. The color variation is fairly minor and not many people I have shown it to have been able to tell the difference.
