Hi,
It seems my Z Fold 4 is draining battery charge faster then I perceive it should be. I lose 1% as soon as I take it off the charger, that to on standby. I have put the apps that are most in use by me under deep sleep, brightness less than 50% (around 30%), Always On Display off. However, the battery is draining out fast. I had to charge the phone twice today (just to add, I have set the max charge limit to 85%). Is there a way to optimise the battery to output better performance?
Best
Likely a cloud* app like Google backup Transport doing it. Try temporarily disabling Google play Services as Backup Transport is a dependency of it. See what it does.
Try in safe mode to rule out 3rd party apps as a cause. All Samsung's shoud be optimized.
*no SD card makes you dependent on cloud storage which uses a lot of battery. The other option is OTG flashsticks for storage. A raw deal. Google wants to force you to need their cloud services. Same crap MS did years ago.
This is one reason I run 2 N10+'s; one has 1.5tb of storage. The only cloud app I use is Gmail for security reasons.

I find the standby on the ZF4 to be one of the best I've had. Overnight it can go 12 hours and only be down 4 percent. A quick question - did you transfer data from your old phone to the ZF4?

Hi, thanks for the reply.
I probably lose 5% to 6% on standby overnight. But when I start using the phone it starts to discharge quickly (from my perspective), and no I did not transfer anything from my old phone (Note 8).

I've not noticed a quick discharge even while using the phone and I'm a moderate to heavy user. You could download GSAM Battery Monitor Pro and with a couple adb commands enable "app sucker" that will tell you exactly what apps are the ones eating your battery. You can do the same with what is already on your phone but IMHO GSAM is much better.

The only apps with high usage are YouTube, which I use regularly on daily basis, and Samsung's UI.

No SD card really doesn't make us rely on cloud storage, having a 1tb version available should work for most people and thats what i bought with my s22 ultra and fold 4. I certainly wouldn't complain if they brought it back though, still have my note 20 ultra and its handy to have.

A boot loop, system crash, forced factory reset will make you wish that data had been on a SD card. Worse to reload 400+gb of data takes hours instead of slamming the card in. I need 1tb for data, don't want apps crowding it out.
Everything I need for a full reload including installable apps are on my SD card. No PC or internet needed.
Dual drive machines are the only way to roll. The SD card is the data drive; all critical data goes here. Only apps, the download and the DCIM* folders go on internal memory. Then the data drive is regularly and redundantly backed up to hdds.

Possibly 120ghz refresh?? As long as I'm not constantly use mine its pretty good on its battery, the Hotspot does some damage tho so if I can I started using USB tethering, but there could be something with the ui5 sense I'm constantly cleaning my ram!!

Totally agree with most of that but the sad reailty is there are very few flagships with sd slots now. I use a portable SSD for backups which i do weekly so i wouldn't lose much if my phone died. I have 530gb or so of data on it and with the ssd speeds only takes maybe an hour or so to transfer. Still id love to have a 512gb sd card AND 1tb of internal storage lol

That's one reason why I'm running two N10+'s.
500gb internal plus a 1tb SD card on one, the other is 256gb internal. They get at least 11 hours SOT, up to 13 hours. One is running on Pie the other 10; no active scoped storage. They run like bats out of hell. Just well balanced work horses with an excellent form factor; more importantly they fulfill their mission. Something Samsung seems to have forgotten how to do.
In 10 years I've never been so displeased with Samsung's current flagship product line for 3 years running now. So I just keep running the N10+'s; bought the second one a year ago. Don't have much faith in Samsung anymore and the lack of a solid flagship to effectively replace to N10+ led to that decision. That decision was couple to Google Android 11 being a dog. 12 is worse and 13 looks like another fubar as well.
Maybe in another 3 years... sadly if I had to buy a new flagship phone today, it still be a N10+ Snapdragon. Same experience with the now discontinued Buds+; nothing in Samsung's current Buds lineup is a drop in equal replacement. Everything Samsung now has seems to be a battery hog. That's not progress.
i don't know about you guys, but i am loving my Fold 4.
the camera is a little bit tricky to use and i feel like i am missing some tips and tricks.... but in the end... i am glad that i got this phone.

Just updated to Android 13 UI 5.0 about a week ago and was leary of the update because of all the problems with BT and battery I've read about. My experience is completely different, not a single issue to report. I can unplug the phone when I go to bed and in the morning after returning from the gym approximately 10 hours it has only dropped 4 percent. Just about the same as Android 12 or maybe a little better.

I resolved this issue by uninstalling Samsung bloatware. Don't know which one actually helped. Now the phone holds 100% charge for significant duration but only when idle. Anything major like a phone call would drain 1% to 2% - depending on the duration of the call - of battery. Overnight it loses about 4% to 5% with Wifi on.
Can you mention which bloatware needs to uninstall in order to save battery?

I've always been impressed by the battery life on Defy ever since I owned it. I haven't owned other smartphones before to be able to make a true comparison but using electronic devices for a long time I can tell the battery usage on Defy can be impressive. However, there were times I noticed the battery was drained so quickly.
In my latest watchful examination of battery usage I have achived to use only 30% of the battery for more than two days. Here is a summary of my usage in the past two days;
4 Hours Music Playback (PowerAmp)
30 Mins wireless
About 16 hours airplane mode
No phone calls on my mobile but I did dial a number several times
I have fully charged the mobile on Friday morning and on Sunday morning the battery has 70% charge.
Hint:
As it was stated in user manual it is recommended to charge the phone from mains socket whenever is possible. I can confirm that I've seen battery improvement after recharging the battery by mains socket after several times.
Since I don't have a use for MMS I have renamed the APN server. The same trick can be used to disable data and that saves battery life too if you don't use your phone to push/pull data.
In the past 2 days my network type has been set to 2G only. The automatic setting certainly have dramatic affects on battery.
Before going to bed I put the phone to airplane mode since the reception in my bedroom is very weak and this increases the battery usage.
With simple measures the battery life can be extended (noticeable) more than what you'd expect.
I'm very pleased with the battery usage so far. Nonetheless, I will buy a spare battery as soon as it is available in the UK.
Happy New Year XDA
Yours are the most impressive stats for the battery use. I've set my Defy into saver mode, and the network data to 2G as well (I only use it to sync up with Gmail (plus Calendar and Tasks) and my employer's Exchange email) and get down to 50% after two days of moderate use, which is enough for me not to worry about running out of juice if I'm away from home for a few days. Yes, the Defy can be pretty frugal with battery use.
I ended up having my original Defy swapped because of concerns that the battery wasn't up to scratch and the new one's been brilliant.
I'm in 3G all the time, never put it in airplane mode, and after 62 hours I still have 20% left - that's with me having used it for some calls, texts, web browsing, facebook and a good couple of hours of Angry Birds as well.
Definitely the best smartphone around for battery life IMO.

What does mains socket mean? The wall outlet (I am in the US).
If so, how else would you charge? Computer USB?
If its the bit in the wall that the electricity comes from then its the same thing :L and yeah you can charge it from a computer USB but it takes a little bit longer

Yeah, seriously.
I'm not talking about hours of calls, more like 15 minutes or so. Maybe an hour or two total web browsing and facebook and perhaps an hour on Angry Birds.
Part of the reason it lasted so long was that I just didn't touch the phone on Christmas day at all, so that was 24 hours with basically zero use, which is unusual.
The next charge last more like 2 days, which I think is closer to how I'll be using it normally.
if you put it in air plane mode, and a couple hours later u turn air plane mode off. will u get all of your notifications? like calls, texts and stuff that people sent to u while the phone was in airplane mode
There is true gem on the Market named JuiceDeffender Beta - I used it since my Milestone and it really does what it says it does. All the hints you mentioned already included in the program and are being controlled by it. For example, as soon as you display turns off your network automatically switches to 2G. In paid version you can even adjust processor's speed when needed (underlocking of course, in terms of battery saving) However i am currently on free version and it's enough to make the battery last almost twice as longer.
I had some problems installing it on Defy, but they were all gone as soon as I rooted the phone.

How did you get the 3G -> 2G to work? I can not enable that feature, as I am not using a CyanogenMod rom and I can not download/install AOSP helper as it suggests. I am using the beta and UltimateJuice, which I purchased after seeing what features it provided. I'm using the CPU features to do what SetCPU did for me - no need to have two packages with overlapping features installed.

In practice the only ROMs known to work are CyanogenMod (any version) and the Nexus One stock ROM..

ok so I used my phone for about 3 hours last night tweaking things and playing with stuff and didn't charge it overnight and used it a bunch today and the battery indicator looked like it was at about 70%. probably not accurate, but the fact that it's even still on amazes me because it's probably got 8 hours of playing with it and 6 hours of standby and still going strong.
I think a full drain then a full charge might reset the battery indicator for accuracy, I wish we had like a "current widget" for WP7 to see the ma drain.
how you guys doing on HD2 WP7 battery drain? Mine seems to be even better than WM6.5
I have the exact opposite experience as you. My HD2[7]'s battery life is crap. It was fully charged last night and I had left it in my drawer with the Wi-fi off. After coming from work a half hour ago, I saw that the battery was almost drained.
Also, shouldn't the battery icon show the plug when the phone is being charged? My phone is on and booted into WP7, the red light is showing but the battery icon shows no animation or the plug. EDIT: WTF IT FROZE ON ME, I had to remove the battery!
Finally, what's with the random reboots? I've seen 2 already.

I think its something related to the SD cards you are using.
If the Sd card you are using is not compatible with WP7 then you will get random reboots.
And the main thing here is that there is no specific way to know which SD card will work and which wont work with WP7
By the way my battery is somewhat draining faster than the Android I was using on my HD2

What I meant to say was, we don't know which SD card will work with WP7 on HD2.
I wasn't talking about the official WP7
Well the stock 16gig TMOUS card works just fine.
my battery seems to be fine, i use my scale based on my school schedual. with android from 7 am to 4 pm around 50 to 40 percent.
today running wp7 i unplugged it around 8is and about 6 is it had very little black on the battery icon. im going ot charge it up fully, then kill it, to see if that helps reset the battery stats
Well when i first flashed WP7 my battery was over lasting.. After i manually rebooted because i just felt like doing so, my battery has started to drain a little bit to fast.
Are there any marketplace apps that can monitor this stuff yet?
Update: Last night, after making sure that my phone was fully charged, I turned off the wifi and removed the SIM card and didn't touch the phone again until a half hour ago (about 12 hours standby time in total). The indicator is showing about 50% battery life remaining. This SUCKS, and any helpful comments about this will be appreciated.
just considering its not supposed to be on the phone...
also what theme are you using
and since microsd polling it may have a lot of impact on standard battery life...
plus, let's be real, it is an htc...they're not battery efficient

Here are my settings: Dark background theme, purple (hate the color normally, but somehow manages to look nice on the HD2), 30 seconds lockscreen timeout, Wifi off, Location off.
I tried removing the MicroSD, but the phone then becomes unusable with frequent freezes and reboots. I'd love to check if the card is affecting battery life if the damn phone would let me to.

HTC puts bad batteries in their 4.3" phones. They've been using 1230 mAh batteries forever (over a year). Blackberry curves come with 1150 mAh batteries so you can see what that size is somewhat optimized for: feature phones and smartphones with small non-touch screens.
Most smartphones with a 4"+ screen running Android or WP7 have 1400+ mAh batteries (the i4 and Droid X also have 1400, Galaxy S and Incredible have 1500). That's why the battery life is bad.
And it's also the reason why I've never really given the phone much consideration - the battery and the TFT LCD screen they used on it.
That being said, the battery life depends on you usage. When I used my HD2 as myprimary device the battery life was terrible. Once I got my Vibrant and used it only as a PMP, the battery life was terrific because it didn't have a SIM Card and I only used it on WiFi and to play Music and Videos.
But people who use Curve 3Gs as their primary devices and are constantly BBMing and/or SMSing people in addition to calls report days-worth of uptime (emphasis on the plural).
My battery life is on par with what it was on android (about 12-16 hours with moderate usage of web, email, facebook, and heavy twitter) and its configured the same was as my android:
1) wifi is on when I need it (maybe 20-45 minutes a day for some marketplace downloads or something)
2) location is always on
3) screen is set to manual, low and 3 minute time-out
4) I have 3 IMAP email accounts that check between every 15 minutes and every 30 minutes.
5) I have a VERY active twitter account that updates every few minutes (not sure exactly as it doesn't appear to be live tile integrated)
6) facebook and google sync
7) HTC HUB is usually running updating the weather and stocks as often as it likes
8) dark brown theme
9) ringer off and no haptic feedback
Hope that helps anyone.
I do agree that the HTC supplied battery is sub-standard. Does anyone know where I can see what the battery percentage is acutally at? I only have the icon in the top right.
Just as a bit of information, my HD7 gets significantly better battery life than my sister's Galaxy phone. Also, those of you removing the SIM, make sure you also enable airplane mode, incase the phone continues to still search for signal... Battery size isn't as important as power management, though I do agree I wish we had a bigger battery on our HD7s... we might have sacrificed a little space for it though...
I think the battery meter is off. After about an hour of playing with Netflix, Zune and watching videos with the ign app my battery meter indicated that I had a lil juice left. I went to sleep without charging the phone. I was sure it would be dead when I woke but it wasn't. I was able to get about 2 more hrs out of it while using the Zune player streaming a playlist I saw.

There is no third party multi-tasking in WP7 and Android Users usually have more apps/services updating stuff in the background. Yes, WP7 will get better battery life than lots of Android Phones and even theHD2 with the same battery in it due to that simple fact along, nevermind all the other exceptions and the obvious disclaimer: different use patterns are different.

I have ATK or whatever it is installed on her phone, not sure if the AMOLED screen uses more juice though
Don't get me started on task killers and android. ATK may be causing the poor battery life. Those process and apps you think your killing are just gonna restart and cause more battery drain. Android does not need task killers. I suggest trying auto killer wich tweaks androids internal memory management to be more or less aggrsive. Phone must be rooted though.

I won't have much luck with that lol, her phone, her rules... I might convince her some day though
Ok, I know there are ways to improve battery life, and mostly this is dimming the screen. However, I love to keep all my screens at fill brightness. My eyes are bad enough without me squinting and bright screens help me see better.
Problem is that I can LITERALLY watch the battery percentage tick off on both of my note 8.0 devices. I have had multiple notes, from the note phone, note 10.1, other note 8s, and more. Right now I have two note 8.0 (not the first ones either, gave an old one to a friend) and a note pro 12.2 that my wife uses. I would like to get another 12.2 but dont have the money. So just have the note 8.0 devices. They are nice, I like the compact size and better portability, and I held onto them for the kids to use for school as well....however, when the battery power goes away in an hour or less of usage, they become pointless.
Does anyone else get the same issue? I have wiped and reset the devices and just cannot get long battery life. So much pain that I hardly keep them charged anymore.
I have rooted many devices and so that is not new, but I did not want to go making customer setups on devices for the kids. THough, now with the battery issue I may just do that. Would love to find a ROM like I have on an old HTC one S (original model) that was so good I once stayed all night on 5% power while tethering. .
So, does anyone else experience poor battery power on kitkat? and Can anyone recommend a good battery saving ROM? Do not need anything fancy, just good imrpovements and normal use of device with better battery.
Thanks Everyone!
I had this problem with my Note 8. What solved it for me was removing the back cover, unplugging the battery connector, then reconnecting it. Apparently it will recalibrate the battery by doing so.
Sent from my AT&T Galaxy Note 3 using Tapatalk®
Since your rooted, installing Xposed Framework and Wanam Xposed or Wanam DVFS Disable will work to correct the issues.
Have found a number of issues with Android itself. Google play music was disabled by me because of media issues with large storage. Would suck up battery power.
There are a number of threads and info about battery drain.
I do not recommend opening the device unless warranted, nor do I recommend using a calibration tool. Since it is not a permanent fix the tool will need to run again at a later time.
Your battery poll is not accurate enough for me to select which selection fits to the tablet. No 8.0 Note will be able to go 12 hours on internal battery.
I get 8+ hours on a full charge, with screen 1/3 to 1/2 brightness, and power save enabled. WiFi on, GPS not used but enabled, and a few Google apps and widgets disabled.
Cleaned up, and disabled image cache through Wanam Xposed. Running Greenify and enabled within Accessibility.
Battery usage will be skewed by apps and widgets installed and running in background. I use an Xposed module called Bootmanager to limit apps that I do not need at startup. Also I use Receiver Stop to limit wake ups by certain apps. I selectively found some widgets and removed them as well.
One oddity nobody has mentioned but it runs with all devices that have SD card slots. An SD card will draw power from your device. So some SD cards may draw more current than others. Not much within SD card spec, but newer tech SD cards may and have shown less current use by design.
I run a super fast SD card, so its tech may have lower current usage over HC SD cards.
The battery disconnect worked for me; I went from kinda bleh battery life (3-4 hours screen time) to excellent (7+ with data and GPS always on).
My battery is draining like anything and i doubt if it will last 6hrs. also, fast charge isn't working. for the first couple of charges, it worked and then it started taking 12 mins to charge one percent!
Please check for latest system updates. Please ensure to use the adapter and USB cable that came with your device. Also Recommend to go to settings/Power Management to adjust Auto-start Manager and power saver. For more details and trobleshooting assistance please see the pre-installed ASUS Support app and select Assistance. There is a lot of helpful info in this app.

Already done for me, and the batterie still draining :\
1 charge = 4h Screen On max (brightness low)
Edit : Sorry it was for this topic, but same problem http://forum.xda-developers.com/zenfone2/help/kernel-android-os-battery-usage-t3107761
Also, I think it will help to post what model/specs you have. 2GB or 4GB, etc. I know the battery life is so so on this device, however it seems to affect the 4GB one more.

4Gb for me yes
Bad battery draining on my 4GB too. Asus needs to fix this and update to Android 5.1 quickly. It's bad for a phone to get a bad battery reputation on launch....it may never recover its image unless a fix is released quickly.
I have the same issue
Hi,
I have the same issue, it was charging in fast charging mode for first 2 days now it is taking hours to charge fully
Bear in mind that the fast charger will only kick in when battery is below 68% charged, and I thinks slows down when charge gets up to that amount too. At least that's my understanding of it.
It's only logical I think that the 4GB version has higher battery usage. Android loves to fill up the RAM unlike Windows (which loves to free us the RAM). So maintaining more cache would definitely require more RAM. I made the mistake of buying the 4GB. I hope the battery optimisations in 5.1 will help reduce the issue.
I am no expert but these are just my thoughts.

i suspect the issue with the 4GB ram model is the higher boost clock of the processor (more voltage and battery drain)..
if anything, the ram should be helping to keep power consumption in check since you dont need to keep reloading apps over and over.. unless of course theres a misbehaving app
try the usual tweaks such as "disable wifi scanning even when off" and the startup manager.. should help with you mileage somewhat.
if you're willing to root, you can freeze/uninstall many asus apps like dr safety as well

Oh im all rooted and greenified. But yes the higher clock speed can definitely be a culprit. And yes as you say.. RAM should help. But coupled with the known memory leaks of lollipop and stuff, I think the RAM might also to be blamed. Anyway waiting for a sfotware fix soon.
Do you guys have latest software? I think I just got an update a day or two ago, version 2.17.40.6 for my phone. I'm finally starting to see reasonable battery drain now. 12 hours, with screen active 5 hours during that time.
Also disable lots of useless apps from starting with Auto-Start Manager.
What are the top 5 draining apps?

Hi, just got the asus zenfone2 2gb a couple of days ago, and I have the same problem. Charging takes 8 hours at least for a full charge and battery drains from 100 to 20 in only a couple of hours. When I bought it, the problem was already there at the first boot. It took at least 20 minutes to get it from dead to have it finally go on. I took the phone from the box and it was dead. I don't know about asus, but I am sure that every phone that I have ever bought had at least a little bit of power when first taken out of box, but this phone was different. Was it a factory defect or am I just charging wrong?

Make sure the cable is inserted in the charger all the way. Or try another charger or cable.

Ha ha ha my 10/2/15 post...
... updated info...
yes, 4gb version. 64GB ram (32 GB memory card)
yes, even did (I bet this screwed it up worse) an update earlier this week.
before that I was able to get device booted or at least saw a cable.
I have tried at least 6 different USB micro charging cables, and several power sources..
(portable battery, direct ac power, ASUS supplied charger, and 3-4 other chargers (cube/hi power, etc)
...STILL wont get power..
yeah right.
I) I hate the non-removable battery.
2) device (in past) has just dropped dead, and t00k 3-5 hrs before it had a charge sufficient to boot phone
3) upgraded OTA updates, last one early this week.
3) current status:
Phone dead, wont charge:
(have a usb cable that turns from blue (nothing attached or full
battery) to Red (connected or charging)
it is solid blue...
also tried the charger that came with device, as well as a hardwired ac (USA) charger, and some fast chargers I have (4a/5v)
The blue light on the USB cable is telling me that:
* the cable is getting power from the source
* The device is not recognizing the cable or power source .
ALL in all, I liked this device (except for battery), and now I am frustrated
I figured out that the fast charge didn't work when any power saver was on. Just put it on normal and then try. That should solve the problem.
in stock rom there are so many bugs so u guys who still didn't try custom roms, try that and it will help to extend battery life and performance also

Don't forget to switch of all Google apps , in Lollipop Google is a battery killer.
And, this helped me, read the faq's in Asus Support on you're phone.
I bought this phone for the increased battery life (3000mAh and Asus claims over 12hrs battery life) compared with my Zenfone 5.
Very disappointing so far.
After tuning the apps the battery lives for 10hrs but only in standby. In case of gaming or making phone calls the battery life is horrible.

The "3000mAh" don't really means something, because each phone consumes more or less power. And what Asus claims is claimed by Asus, the manufacturer so it might be faked a bit.
Has anyone experienced drastic loss of battery charge? I had mine on the charger and after unplugging for 13 min it went from 100% to 87%
There might be a app that drains a lot, i had a fast drain too, not as bad but once i deleted a few apps it was better. I have over 100 apps on this phone :X
Odd thing is , I just did a factory reset and if I don't use the phone the stats show 14 hrs + but.as soon as I start using it . It starts dropping super fast
Are you rooted? Have you Xposed installed?
Do you have a microSD inserted?
Never rooted this phone and I do have an SD card in it, would that affect?
Yes/no , sometimes the SD files can be somewhat corrupted which in turn makes your media scanner run non stop,.if you pull your SD and put into a Windows cpu, and run a program to scan for corrupted files,. I've not had high battery drain but I do check my stats and Android O.S. is by far the largest consumer (damn I miss root) verizon

Try to use it without microSD card for a while and look at what happens...
On my old Moto Z many reported overheating and battery drain with uncompatible cards...
Anyway post a screenshot of your setup - battery stats after some hours since boot up...
