USB-C to Ethernet (Dongle) freeze/reboot - Moto Z2 Force Questions & Answers

Hi,
As a beginner i started to use some Custom ROMs. Now my Z2Force retired and i wanted to use it in a secure and flexible way.
Problem using Ethernet-Dongle:
When i plug the Ethernet-Dongle over USB-C, the smartphone shows an Ethernet-Connection, but:
1. LOS 19.1
The WiFi-symbol is flickering and sometimes it shows up the Ethernet-connection, especially using the Browser. Some seconds after that, everything freezes and the phone reboots.
2. Similiar Custom ROMs
Similiar behaviour :-/
What i know:
1. Realtek chipset does not work, it is a Asix one, which shows up, but do not work properly.
Do somebody has an idea, how this could work?
P.s: I've seen on a Lineage OS ROM for x86 PC, where Ethernet is customized as VirtWiFi (Virtual WiFi?)

[Q] Weird USB problem

When I connect my HTC Desire (I've had it with custom ROMs and the stock ROM) to my PC in any mode, my external hard drives stop functioning.
My phone does not connect properly and my 2 western digital USB hard drives stop working. I cannot use either one of the devices until I disconnect either the hard drives or the phone.
I'm currently on Windows 7 (64-bit), i5, MSI P55-UD2, 4 Gb RAM
Has anybody had similar experiences?
Can't say i have, very strange. May be a conflict on the USB ring, irq etc but i would expect a full on freeze or BSOD with that. Try downloading the drivers again and see if that helps
The weird thing is that when I disconnect my phone I do not have to reconnect the drives or anything. They just simply start working again.
Thanks for the tip. I will try it anyway but I do not think that it has anything to do with the android driver.

[Q] USB constantly loosing connection in 10s intervals

Hi!
I am trying to connect my new G Pad 8.3 via USB to my laptop.
The G Pad vibrates shortly and reports the connection is established (MTP) then looses it after 10 to 40 seconds only to start that cycle again until I pull the plug.
Charging is impossible and so is transferring data/USB debugging etc.
Anyone else experienced this?
Notebook has USB3.0 and is running Ubuntu/Linux and Windows - both operating systems cause the same behaviour.
G Pad is LG-V500, 4.4.2 Kernel 3.4.0, Build KOT49I.V50020a
Any help would be greatly appreciated!
I don't have my G Pad so far but I would try:
- Use USB 2 Port not USB 3
- Try to use an OTHER USB Port then before
- Try an other USB Cable (maybe the original or from an other device like phone)
- Does it work with your Phone for example?
- Windows, but what Windows Version?? XP, Vista, Win7 Pro or HP , Win 8 , Win8,1 ???
- Windows is a VM or a "real" installation?
- Did you try the Pad on an other Computer (maybe from a freind etc.)
- Is the Pad in original State or root, other ROM / Kernel etc. ? You postet the version numbers but no further information.
Edit:
I forgot something....
- Does it happen while the Notebook is on AC or on battery or both?
Thanks for the answer, here are some details:
- tested notebook models: m3800 and xps15
- usb3.0 ports only
- native Ubuntu 14.04 (legacy mode)
- native Win8.1 (uefi mode)
- multiple cables tried
- phone and other devices work like charm
- pad is running stock rom w/o any hacks/changes
Further research lead to this:
- works on almost every desktop pc I tried it with
- works when using a passive USB hub
- works when using an active USB hub
So, current workaround is to use a tiny USB hub for connection. Seems like an issue with the usb controller itself (since problem persists through reboot and across operating systems)
Still would prefer to find a way to directly connect it...
Hey,
thanks for feedback.
I worked for 2 really BIG Companys (but not Dell ) in the Customer Support for their Notebooks/Computers till last year when Win8 came out
and had already similar Problems to this but not the exactly same issue like you have.
I can not tell you a solution right now but maybe I can give you some hints, as you seem to be a "advanced user"
I find it strange, that the issue appears on both OS's, so it might "incompatible" and there is nothing we can do on your problem except the workaround that you are already using.
In the simmilar cases I had, it was something with the powermanagent of the Notebook. So I would recommend the following:
- Driver Update for the USB Controller itself
- Check if there is any powersaving feature enabled , if yes disable it - maybe this will help.
Sorry, but I can not tell you where exactly on Win8 as I am still using Win7 and never supportet WIN 8 ... Only have seen it on some
Computers in store ...
- Also it might be an option in the BIOS, so check the BIOS of your Notebook and change the USB settings (if there are some available)
Sometimes there is something like "USB legacy support" in the BIOS options, or some other USB settings. Try to change them and then test again.
Is there a port-replicator or docking station available for your Notebook?
Maybe you can use the G Pad directly connected to the portb replicator or docking station then ...

Chinese crane 3G N708 android unit - what WiFi dongle?

Hi there. I found a number of info about similar systems, so may be you can help with quite a simple question.
I've got a chinese unit to be built in the car running Android 4.0.4 (yes, it's a while ago). It has not yet a WiFi device built in, but supports an external adapter to be connected to USB - therefore it has a dedicated cable, I guess OTG.
I tried already 2 different WiFi Dongles having USB interface - without success. So I'd like to know WHAT SPECIFICATION such a dongle should have before I just try buying others. (The actual models have WiFi built in, so the sellers of these things have no longer "such dongles" to sell.)
I have the following information:
Seems to be a modell named crane-3G (does that make sense?)
Modellnr: N708
Android 4.0.4
Is there alternatively a way to make another adapter work? I can install APK files using a memory card. But, sorry, I'm not familiar with installing devices on an android system...
Thanks, if you can help!

Treble GSI Question

Hi, as the title says, had a question about using GSI's now that treble is available for our phone. I understand that in order to use treble, we must first flash the newest build of Lineage, and then install a GSI. My question is, if Lineage is installed, does it somehow serve as a base that the GSI installs over, or is installing it only pertinent for updating the partition layout? I guess more specifically, if I install the new Lineage, and then flash a GSI over it, will I experience the same bugs in Lineage in any potential GSI installed?
In my case, it's with android auto, since it doesn't seem to work/project over USB with any car I've tested on any of the currently available ROMs. The app works in Lineage, and the phone can connect via Bluetooth to a car, but it doesn't recognize that it's physically connected to a car at all via USB, so it fails to project to the vehicle's display, meaning I need to constantly look down to where it's plugged in at to interact with it instead of through the vehicles built in touch screen, keeps me going back to stock honestly because it's a feature I need access to.
If I install a GSI where auto is properly working, should it work for me as well or no because Lineage doesn't support it currently and that was flashed before the GSI was?
Thanks

I think that is kernel side as our HDCP goes to the greybus instead of USB-C for the projector mod. I know through wireless it works. Tried it on my friend's 2016 Hyundai Santa Fe.
GSI's will have the same bugs via vendor and boot. Also, unless the GSI supports moto mods, those won't work either.

Oh, I didn't think motomods had anything to do with android auto. It doesn't use the pins on the back or anything, just usb, but I can't project via USB, it just brings up the USB select menu (charge, mtp, ptp) and neither of my cars support wireless android auto. I didn't think there were any cars out yet that actually support wireless android auto.
Oh well, guess stock it is for now, thanks for the info.
Edit:
@Uzephi hey, sorry to be a bother, you said you were able to use wireless android auto on a friend's vehicle. I'm assuming that means it's enabled on custom ROMs since it doesn't appear to be on stock. Do you happen to think a mod like this would work?
https://forum.xda-developers.com/ge...droid-3-0-proxy-gateway-android-auto-t3813163
Just curious, because if I could use wireless projection for it that would work just as well to me.

Android Auto uses video over USB. Our ancillary video output is rerouted to the greybus for the projector. Only way to get SElinux to work correctly on aosp was to keep that routing and nix USB video.
I honestly don't know. I did it for kicks to see if his Android Auto app on his Santa Fe would Sync with my phone and it did. It wasn't any projection, it was just the two apps talking to each other. Is that how yours is or is your phone running android auto and the radio is taking the phone's screen as a projection? Because I could be wrong. That is the only thing I could think of why yours wouldn't work.

Ahh gotcha, that makes more sense now.
I can pair the device to the vehicle over bluetooth and use the android auto app that way to play music and stuff, but yeah, normally it takes the phone's screen as projection, so I can use the car's 7in display for android auto without having to play around with my phone. Understanding that video over USB is disabled makes sense as to why auto isn't working. I'm guessing this means it won't work on custom ROMs without a custom kernel, and that would have to disable SELinux and reroute video to USB, correct?
Thanks for all the info, always good to learn something.

Yes that is correct. The Z2 development crew tried but the workaround would have been messy and not true SElinux enforcing which makes me wonder about stock rom tbh.

Question Poco F3 fails on file transfers

I'm on Arrow OS v12.1 if that matters. I've been having issues transferring my music over usb to my Poco F3, random files are not transferrable and there doesn't seem to be any rhyme or reason as to why. The files aren't corrupted because I can play them in my music player and even trying to transfer them one at a time it aborts the file transfer. I haven't seen much online about how to fix this and nothing has worked so far. I've set usb default to file transfer and turned on preventing the phone from going to sleep while charging in the developer settings. Also updated my bios because I saw something about it being a potential ryzen issue but updating didn't work. Any other things to try to fix this would be greatly appreciated.
I've the same issue with my PC. Ryzen 3000-series based.
One of the USB ports on the back works the most reliable, but only when I disable my Custom Settings from BIOS (e.g. Overclock / Undervolt Settings)

I'll try that out when I'm back at my computer then. Glad to know it's not a problem exclusive to my phone since it was hard finding anything online about this issue.

What you said there about USB-issues on Ryzen is correct. Some motherboards with some AMD-based chipset (I think X570) suffer from USB issues... ^^
For me the unreliable USB-connectivity also caused hardbricks in the past, because during the Flash over Fastboot Mode, it would just randomly disconnect.
Nowadays I've resorted to only using that one USB-port for any Data-transfer (e.g. phone or USB Drive). But only when I disable my CPU and RAM Undervolt, because if I don't do that, the USB-connection still ****s itself.
Oh and keep in mind that MTP (the protocol through which your phone + PC talk to each other), sucks ass. It's a decades old standard by Microsoft made in the 1990's and needs to be revised badly!

Do you know what usb port it is on your pc? I have a b550 gaming plus and I've included a picture of the ports on the back.

On my Asus Prime X570 Pro, in the picture below the most bottom-right USB-port. "USB 3.2 Gen 1".
Not even the neighbouring USB-port works reliably, so it is literally that only one.
Mind you, I troubleshooted the heck out of this motherboard, its BIOS settings, Windows... everything. At this point, I'm extremely sure it's a motherboard which is affected by the common AMD USB issues.

I found the special usb port on my own. Thanks for the help, I was able to put all my music on my phone without any files being skipped.

As for Wireless Transfer, I recommend SyncThing from Play Store. It's "manual" and requires set-up on PC too, but it's the most reliable, open-source, and no ads. Will flawlessly transfer 100s of Gigs or whatever.
