Hi guys! I don't know if this thing belongs here, but since I'm an owner of a Blue Angel device, I'll put it here anyway. Is it possible to create a simple device which has the following components:
- An IDE adaptor (don't know if this is the right term, but what I mean is a cable which can be connected to standard HDDs', CDROMs', etc.)
- A power input to provide external power to the HDD or CDROM connected to it.
- A bluetooth radio allowing a device (PDA, cellphone, laptop) which is bluetooth enabled (like my Blue Angel) to connect to it via bluetooth. I think the directory bowsing profile, or network profile should be supported.
The purpose of such a device is to allow my Blue Angel to read CDs' and copy data from hard drives. I know it would mean carrying an extra device, but considering the advantages it would give me (reading CD's and HDD's without the need for a PC) I would surely consider adding it to my gadget bag.
Does such a device exist? If not, is it possible to make something like this?
Sorry, but it can't be done. The Blue Angel's USB port is only a USB Slave port, meaning it only works if plugged into a computer.
I dont think a bluetooth drive adapter exists, but maybe something wireless could be used??

I would also suggest WIFI. Bluetooth is way too slow
Toshiba used to sell a Bluetooth hard drive called the "HopBit". I don't think it was ever sold in the US but Dynamism imported it for a while. It seems to be discontinued though.
Hey there,
my G Pad is currently running the nightly build of CM11 (updated on Jan. 20).
I wanted to try out the external USB functionality. Despite the fact that the tablet does not support additional external power while using the USB host, PCap for Android doesn't work due to the fact, that the ALFA Wifi adapter (RTL8187 chipset) doesn't show up as USB device properly. Actually it's a bit strange.
My USB Hub, external Keyboard and my mouse are working as they should. Mass storage is also showing up. These devices seem to be handled correctly by the operating system. The problem is, I can not use the external Wifi adapter, because PCap tells me, it can't find any USB devices.
I installed the app 'USB device info' which is devided in two parts. The 'Linux' tab shows all devices (including the external Wifi adapter). It uses /sys/bus/usb/devices to determine what kinds of devices are connected to the tablet. Just like lsusb (shows all devices as well including the Alfa network adapter) everything is correct.
The other tab of 'USB device info' called 'Android' doesn't show any devices.
Could anyone explain what's the difference between those two tabs ('Android' and 'Linux') and why the devices are not visible in 'Android'. I guess the operating system is hiding the device, and that's the reason PCap capture is not able to find it.
Thank you guys.
I've been around Linux for a few years now, and have had my Galaxy Tab 3 7.0 for about a year. I've run into a bit of a problem that maybe someone knows how to get around. I have some knowledge of android because of the relationship to Linux... but still rather a newbie.
I'm trying to get my Tab 3 to communicate with a Bolutek BLK-MD-BC04-B serial to bluetooth adapter. I have no problems pairing it with my tablet, but once paired only certain software packages will connect with it... and I have no use for a bluetooth communications terminal (the usual software). I can get everything to work on my main computer (running Ubuntu 12.04LTS) the way I want, but I can't find /dev/rfcomm0 on my tablet. I've tried several software packages from the Google store, but to no avail (so far).
What I'm trying to accomplish overall is getting a piece of equipment I have to work with an android tablet, that at present only works with Windows software. I've got W95 working on a virtual machine in my tablet (a tiny tad slow, but it works well enough) using the no-longer-maintained program "Limbo" and the only thing stopping me now is getting the signal from the serial port (on the equipment) to the virtual machine in my tablet. The adapter works as it should, the only problem is the android bluetooth.
Does anyone know how to get the tablet to connect to the Bluetooth adapter (it's already paired), and then assign the communications to rfcomm0 (or maybe put a virtual link to ttyS0/ttyS1)?
Better yet, is there also anyone with experience working with this Limbo software who could give suggestions how to get a serial port working in it? (It should be easy to do once I figure it out - I've got the whole thing working fine on my main system using Virtualbox, and it was easy.)
I'm on an extremely tight budget (dirt poor actually - typical graduate student) and need to work with what I have, so please no suggestions of buying a new tablet or anything like that.
Thanks!
I have a Pumpkin model KD-C0109-US-A single DIN RK3188 800x600. I would like to use my cell phone to provide a network connection to my HU through USB reverse tethering. The cell phone connects and shows itself as tethered but the HU does not show any network connection. Pumpkin customer service says that reverse tethering is not supported. They suggest using wi-fi hotspot from the cell. I would prefer hard wire through USB so that the phone would be powered while using it as an internet source. The reverse tethering apps have not worked. Is there a firmware upgrade or other work around that will un-cripple the HU and make reverse tethering possbile? Has anyone had success with this? I would also be interested in learning about tried-but-failed approaches to avoid repeating mistakes.
I am really perplexed. The following is the "explanation" I received from the reseller of my unit:
"Thank you for your message/email!
Sorry for replying you late due to different timezone and working time!
Actually as you can see, this is the car radio player, not cellphone, so the Android system was deep modified by the factory, which is already do not have the USB tethering function, cause the USB on the radio is only for USB reading and 3G USB dongle to plug. It is not support that any more. I hope you can understand. If you need to charge your phone, could you mind use your original car USB port to charge it?
Best Regards!"
Does this make sense? Reverse tethering seems to be a common thing in android as in

Help!!
Good luck with this..
Not as easy as you may think, and as that thread points out, there are many that can't get it going on multiple units..
I think you are up against an Android coding layering problem in general.. As I have used reverse tethering alot on windows based machines, as in laptops to throw internet out to rooms that have been to far out of range of signal.. And or hotel rooms so I can use a tablet.. But those setups are using dedicated software that is adding another set of drivers into the windows operation system and setting up a new communication set..
So as been pointed out by your supplier..they don't have the necessary "modules" loaded into thier Android base to service this want..
Not saying that it wouldn't be impossible to implement via scripts.... But there will be a bit of work that needs to be done..
i wouldn't mind do this aswell i have the same headunit (well mine is eonon but yeah)
Hello,
The modem that worked 100% of the time in KGL MTCB units, the Huawei E173u-2 doesn't work anymore.
The manufacturer sent us a list of modems that are - to say the least - very exotic in Europe.
Does anybody have a list of compatible modems? What modems do you guys use?
Do MTCD units support 4G/LTE modems or still only 3G?
Make use of an old phone, making wifi hotspot! - works best for me.
No need to buy slow sticks. Blackberry Q5 is very cheap - and LTE 4g wkan-hotspot is in.
Try the "chinese" umts stick for umts/wcdma that are sold within the headunits. these mostly are 7.2mb/s download. not statisfying, is it?
Yep, the UMTS stick is crap. I bought a Huawei E8372 LTE-WiFi-Stick. This one runs much better.
I tried a Huawei 3131H USB stick and it works fine (3G). The connection appears as a mobile 3g regular icon on the head unit. Sometimes the stick connects, but there's no visual feedback on the unit (still works).
Then I switched to a Huawei R216 (modem/wireless router with battery) with 4G, also works fine. The connection appears as "shared via cable" - 2 small overlapping computer icons. It also works seamlessly. You cannot connect the head unit to the modem wifi while connected via USB (makes sense and I don't know if there's any setting to switch from shared cable connection to wifi)
Hotspot with internet connection (from various phones) - works without a hitch and you can do it with an older phone connected to the USB for power, I tried with an old Samsung S3 Mini and it worked.
The Vodafone tech guys said that their stick modems may not be compatible with my setup, because they had people returning them after tying to connect them to tablets via cable. I suspect that's the case for the headunit too, so I didn't risk it - Vodafone Mobile K4607-Z (from ZTE) and Vodafone Connect USB Speed 6 4G (Huawei I think) are the ones in question.
Hope this helps.

What units do you guys have? Out of curiosity? KLD, KGL, etc?
GS (Xtrons)
Some one test the Huawei E367U-8?

Surely this has nothing to do with MCU version and is dependent on the ROM?
Zubie
I bought a Zubie. It plugs in to the OBD2 port and provides wifi to the car through my Verizon account.
In order to still use a bluetooth OBD2 adapter simultaneously, I bought an OBD2 splitter cable off amazon.
I love this setup.
DOES NOT WORK:Telstra Pre-Paid MF823 4G USB (ZTE MF823) (Unlocked via ebay code)
Only works if when initially plugged in, does not work when resumed from standby or swapped from wifi: HUAWEI E122
Also, There is a big difference for applications activity between a "Cellular" data connection and a WIFI connection (Tethered/hotspot). EG. Spotify set to only download on WIFI connection cannot differentiate between your home WIFI connection and a hotspot or Play Store set to update on WIFI only. This can become costly if you're on a small data plan.
Huawei e3372 (4G/LTE) works perfect when updated the MCU (MTCD_KDV1.82_1 Aug 26).
Initially I've tried with MTCD_KDV1.52_1 May 4, but didn't work.
but nevertheless, there's not 3G or LTE icon signal, there's a Network icon (two computers like MsWindows icon) like if it was an ethernet connection.
I've tested and it works at LTE speed. Cool! :good::good:
Only there's only one problem: This network connection is preferent over WiFi, so, to connect to a Wifi Nework i've to unplug the USB dongle. It's impossible to connect to a WiFi when the dongle is connected.
Joying posted a new 4G dongle, but looks like it works more as a wifi hotspot:

100% a hotspot, the unit is simply powering it.

I've actually got the R216 and I can't make it connect via USB at all - just using the wifi connection.
Could I ask what MCU you are running and roughly where you see it in the network settings?
Thanks!

hey, I have the R216 from Vodafone Romania and I just plugged it in in one of the 3 USB ports with a microSD cable (works on any of them, with no special settings) and threw it in the glove box. My unit is a HotAudio MTCD 5.1. As for the MCU, it worked with both the default one from May, and with the updated one from this forum (June, I think). Can't exactly recall the versions, 1.53 and 1.63 I think. The modem works with both cable sharing and hotspot simultaneously. The unit takes the cable connection as a priority from the modem (you can not plug it in the USB, but choose the Wifi from the same device). I also found out that in some ROMs, the cable net speed is vastly superior to the wifi one

Awesome - thanks heaps!
I have Vodafone Australia version, so probably similar. I think I have one of those MCUs and I'm using the June version of @Malaysk's great software.
Will have to check things out further - my unit has this thing where only one of the usb ports is assigned to be used with the modem, and I can't remember which one I plugged my usb webcam into.
Thanks again for responding.

In my unit's printed schematics & cables, the single shorter one is designated for modems (and has a separate port in the back of the unit). I just plugged the modem in the other 2 for curiosity. For HotAudio MTCD i think there are only 2 MCUs anyway, I couldn't find more. ROMs don't seem to matter, I went through 2 factory versions, 2 Malaysk versions and now I use a Xtrons one,no issues. If you can't get it to work, it may be the modem's firmware to blame.
Silly question, what do you guys use for the SIM card? Surely you don't pop it out of your phone and install it in the modem every time you go for a drive?

Separate sim. Here in Australia I am using a sim from Aldi Mobile on the "Pay as you go" plan.
Still waiting to find a working 3G/4G sim modem for the MTCD
