Question Intel MSM Tool? - OnePlus 9 Pro

I think I read somewhere that the MSM Download Tool only works on intel PC's. Is that true? If so can anyone please explain why?

I have a ritzen 3 5300 and have no problem with the msm tool

You've been able to unbrick your phone with it on your amd pc?

You've read wrong. Not only is there no reason for it not to work on any x86 PC, I've had it worked perfectly fine on my AMD laptop.

Make sure to disable driver signing on PC, uninstall Qualcomm and OnePlus drivers, reboot PC, download latest Qualcomm and OnePlus USB drivers and install, reboot PC and check in device manager to see if when the phone is in EDL mode that it is recognized as 9008 under ports....

It works just fine on my intel pc. The only thing I had to do was install qualcomm drivers. Def didn't have to disable driver signing.

My point was it works fine on my intel pc but not at all on my amd pc. On the amd pc everything works fine, adb fastboot etc but not edl for msm tool.

Has nothing to do with AMD. I have a Ryzen 5600X system and have zero problems. AMD uses the same base X86 instruction set as Intel and Intel actually uses AMD64 for their X64 instructions so there is zero reason for such an incompatibility.

I have also read about the AMD Ryzen having issues with OnePlus. But that was a long time back when I had my OnePlus 3. After that, atleast for the past two years, I have not read any reports about this.
May be your chipset belongs to a particular series which has this problem. Please search the OP 3 forum to find if any solution was found.
EDIT: If my memory serves me right, using a USB hub in the place of the USB port seemed to solve the issue, atleast for some.
EDIT2: Please read THIS and THIS. There are solutions given. Seems like a combination of Ryzen and USB 3 port issue.

Glad that I could help.

So it’s not an AMD issue, it’s a USB 3 issue then. That’s not surprising or even unusual. For the record though, MSM Tool has always worked fine with my USB 3.2 Gen 2 Type-C port on my X570 Unify board. Glad that you got it sorted though.

I don't think that it is a USB 3 issue simpliciter. Because the USB 3 ports in my laptop with Win 10 (now Win 11) work without issues. It should have been a combination of a particular version of the Ryzen chipset with USB 3 as I said earlier. May be you both have a later version of the chipset in which this issue has been sorted out and the other user has an older version.

Or the users are simply not installing the proper chipset drivers. This was an issue even with the Xiaomi flash tool a few years back. People were having issues with USB 3.0 ports, it turned out, that their chipset driver was missing so was the USB 3.0 on Ryzen boards giving issues.

Windows 8.1 Fastboot

I'm on a fresh install of Windows 8.1
Here's what I did.
1. Installed HTC Sync Manager
2. Installed Minimal ADB and Fastboot
3. ADB works fine, boot into bootloader.
4. Windows shows Unknown USB Device (Device Failed Enumeration) in Device Manager
Running fastboot devices returns nothing
I can connect my phone to view files, I can ADB on my phone, the only thing I cannot do is fastboot. Why is this happening and how can I fix it?

From all of my research, you're the first person I've heard of having it working. Any specific drivers used? I'm very curious (currently, I have to use a backup machine to push TWRP updates to my VZW One)
Same thing here. 8.1 broke fastboot. Is this a Microsoft problem specifically because if it is I seriously doubt they will be in a hurry to patch it.

I have found out something based on the VMware experience. Can somebody try it out and report back???
I feel that the fastboot problem in windows 8.1 is related to the USB port.
For those people that having problem, are you guys using USB 2.0??? If yes do you have USB 3.0 port in your computer??? The real problem maybe is that fastboot only works with USB 3.0 but not USB 2.0 in windows 8.1...
I tried both USB types, and half a dozen drivers and workarounds, and nothing.
I don't believe the dude above got it working. He is probably thinking Win 8, not 8.1. I have it working on 8.
Flash Image GUI will probably do everything you need to do in fastboot without the need for a computer. I just threw 8.1 on one of my extra PC's, I'll see if I can get the drivers going. I feel like this was answered in another thread though, I think it is in the rumrunner thread...

I've just had this problem last week, and now got a solution...
Hi guys,
For anyone interested, due to something DreamerTKM said - I tried both USB 2 & USB 3 sockets on my Dell L701X laptop and both failed:
ERROR: Unknown USB Device (Device Failed Enumeration)
I did a clean install of Win 8.1 Pro and it still failed...
Anyway, I was using Windows 8.1 Pro default drivers for my system when this issue came up last week - default as in Microsoft's own out of the box drivers (drivers on the install DVD and Windows Updates) for my CPU chipset, USB chipset, etc... - my entire system (except for my nVidia graphic card!)
My laptop is now a few years old and my official "Dell" CPU chipset drivers are not compatible with Win 8.1, so I need to rely on Microsoft for these, but my USB 3 originally had Dell supplied "Renesas USB 3" drivers which I hadn't installed or even thought about installing as my USB 3 socket worked - and worked well...
...anyway, after installing the original Renesas USB 3 drivers the fastboot commands work once plugged into a USB 3 socket! USB 2 still wouldn't work though, but now my Win 8.1 laptop can do fastboot commands through a USB 3 socket.
I understand not everyone will have a Dell L701X laptop but the moral here is before blaming Microsoft and their Windows 8.1 O/S (which is truly awesome), try installing the correct drivers first!
DreamerTKM - thank you for putting me on the correct path with this!
Hopefully this post may help some of you!

guyz if u r working on win8.1 just plug it in ur usb 3.0 then it will wrk...if u put in usb 2.0 it wont!

Full fastboot and ADB support is available in windows 8.

I have been using fastboot and adb with no problems on Windows 8.1 since January. But the issue is much more than simply using a different USB port. Here is the tutorial I used. http://www.droid-now.com/2013/10/fix-working-fastboot-drivers-windows-8-1-x64/ Certain security features of 8.1 need to be bypassed to install the modified drivers. Also see this guide: http://forums.team-nocturnal.com/index.php/topic/1362-how-to-adb-fastboot-in-windows-xp-7-81/ I used this just for ADB, but it looks like he's updated his guide for fastboot as well. Hope this information helps.

Updated HTC Drivers?

As some of you may know, Windows 8 and 8.1 kills ADB and Fastboot. Does anybody have any workarounds?
Right now I can only get "Device Failed Enumeration" in device manager.
We really need HTC to send out some updated drivers.

But, I would like to get this working in the future.

Windows 8.1 changed unsigned driver policy. Again. Every version since Vista has made it increasingly more difficult to install drivers that are not WHQL verified.

Be Advised, Under win8.1/X64 that if you have(like me) an Intel 8 /c220 (or with a 4th generation like intel I7 4770k) you may encounter a big mess , and perhaps you''l have to do a clean install of win 8.1 : all the usb2 DEVICES were disconnected after the first iusb3xhc.inf driver install !! So no more usb/Bluetooth keyboard+mouse , fortunately i had an old ps2 keyboard and i was able to delete only with "tab/alt Tab/ctrl tab" keys the "intel usb3 extensible " line in device manager, and as soon as i done a refresh (ALT+A) in device manager the previous driver(Microsoft) was reinstalled by win 8.1 andall the usb2 devices connected (mouse/keyb/hub etc)

see there there's in the last comments at the bottom , Andrew(tks to him!)a link + modified drivers for intel8/c220)
and for me it worked mouse/keyB were functional during all the process
next step check the fastboot adb is working now
Try creating a live ubuntu CD and run that. You will then be able to use the Linux platform to adb without editing your boot partition on your pc.

I had this issue with Nexus 5. It was problem in Windows USB drivers. I was messing with them and broke something.
Have you been messing with drivers? And, is laptop in the game or desktop PC?
Reinstalling the Windows would solve it, but I bet it is something with USB drivers. Reinstall first drivers for USB (and not phone USB drivers, I mean drivers for USB port on motherboard).
One thing I didn't see you mention trying is a different USB port. Sometimes individual ports on your computer can die for whatever reason (physical stress, electrical shock, etc).

I think some drivers have to be installed for viewing in MTP..
I have provided a zip file of Asus Android USB drivers... There is a folder named MTP... I think you have to install those drivers.. These drivers are compatible with XP,VISTA, 7..
Please confirm the working of MPT/Drivers if successful
I have the same issue.
Windows 7 only recognises the ZF2 once out of around 10 connection attempts.
I found that deleting the USB common drivers and re-booting Windows works for one new connection, but after that the problem returns. I think the drivers that are automatically downloaded are not very reliable / stable.
I find that if I keep unplugging / re-plugging the cable, it will eventually recognise it.
It's a bit of a pain to be honest and it doesn't matter how many different cables or different USB ports I try it makes no difference.
I just spent 20 minutes with this issue ... until I realized I was using my HTC USB cable. I decided to follow the most common suggestion and plugged in the ORIGINAL ASUS cable that came with the ZF2. Worked flawlessly.
Hope you have the same luck!
Ended up being something wrong with a quick charge driver on my mother board with this. Ended up reflashing BIOS and removing that and it fixed my issue. Talked to other people as well and a lot are reporting they have to use the cable it came with as well.

Phone keeps disconnecting on AMD Ryzen 5 3500U laptop

Hello,
My mother's phone (redmi note 8 pro 64GB global version) keeps disconnecting and connecting to laptop (Windows 10, Ryzen 5 3500U, both on USB 2 and USB 3 ports) when plugged in via USB cable (used 2 different cables), so basically cannot copy files from the phone.
Tried the same laptop and same cables with a Redmi Note 8T and a Samsung A70 and both worked just fine (so it shouldn't be because of the USB ports nor the cables).
The question is, does anyone know if there are needed any additional drivers loaded apart from what Windows sets up? Did anyone experience this(if so, was there any fix found)?
I have seen a similar post on Acer forums (it was on a Ryzen 5 3550H laptop) so I guess it might be an incompatibility between the MTK driver and AMD processors (Unfortunately there was no usefull information regarding fixing the problem).
I think it has the official MIUI 11 with android 10 installed (not sure if the update was performed or not, I can ask my mom later to confirm).
Unfortunately, the best I could do was to connect remotely to the laptop as I am not able to go and get physical access to the phone.
If I missed any usefull details, I will try my best to find out and fill the gaps.
I have the exact same problem with my laptop which has a ryzen 5 3550h, was wondering about this for days, finally someone asked the question, oh and i also know of the post on acer forums, unfortunately I haven't found a solution, but if someone does, please let us know.
edit: I've also seen a lot of people saying it's a windows 10 issue, but I assure you,it isn't,I've tried on linux as well, except on linux the phone isn't even detected, which further goes to show that it isn't a driver issue, but rather some sort of incompatibility with ryzen based usb hubs and this phone, the zenfone max pro m1 has a similar issue(only occurs during fastboot).'
I'm don't have a wifi connection and my data is limited, but could you try and see if it works with a custom ROM,if it does we can report the issue to xiaomi.
Have you tried plugging into an multi port external usb hub as most have their own chipset and that will sit between your phone and your pc, It`s worth a shot.
Also some motherboard uefi bios you can select a usb 2.0 mode or some type of compatibility mode.
Don't have one ?

Unfortunately don't have a usb hub nor do I think it's worth buying one for this issue (as it is not that bad, I could be using some wireless file transfer I guess but it would be a bit more complicated to set it up remotely xD).
When I'll have the chance, I will try to guide my sister through bios to see what's in there.

Huh, weird. Never heard of a usb device not detected on linux (unless it's a hardware problem like a faulty cord). When you say it doesn't show up, I suppose you mean in lsusb? Does dmesg say anything weird?

i don't think it's a faulty cord,i've tried multiple,on ubuntu the device connects, but charges only, and doesn't appear to be detected,to me it seems like some sort of hardware incompatibility issue between mtk and certain ryzen hubs, as for dmesg,i'm not very familiar with it,but i'll let you know once i understand how to use it.
I do own acer 2500u laptop and on one usb 2.0 port i do observe same behaviour. It is some incompatibility with ryzen/mediatek devices.
What about 3.0 ports?
My laptop has only one usb 3.0 port and it is working fine with the rn8pro.

Have you tried installing the MTK USB driver correctly?
try to check again in the device manager when you connect the device Redmi Note 8 Pro is there a name portable devices there?
in my opinion it's not the fault of the RN8P device because the RN8P still uses Quallcom hardware for chargers and USB and it's universal..
To be sure to try again another Xiaomi device and is it connected?

Every other xiaomi device works perfectly fine, tested the redmi note 7 pro, redmi note 4 and the redmi 7a,as for installing the driver, I've done that several times on different versions of windows as well, if it were a driver issue on windows, it should still work on linux, right? but it isn't even detected, as for device manager, I can't exactly see any new device or anything, but there is a connection sound and a disconnection sound playing on loop(on windows only). I was considering downgrading my bios, but then I found another user with the same laptop on an earlier version claiming to have the same problem.

if so is it possible that the RN8P device hardware is having problems ??
make sure to return with another computer / laptop and also make sure the data cable is still functioning, also use the USB View application to see all connections on your PC / laptop. You can see and delete several devices that are often connected.

I will try to install the MTK USB driver manually and check if it is working. With Redmi Note 8T works fine (but it has the Qualcom Snapdragon).
I will also ask my sister when she has time to try and connect to our desktop (an old intel pentium 4 xD running on windows 7)

It'll probably work an an intel computer, it works on my intel core i3 5005u laptop just fine.
I don't think installing mtk usb drivers manually is going to be fruitful but do let me know what happens
Well, the phone connects well on the old intel desktop, on the ryzen laptop even after manually installing the driver is the same issue.
I checked now and the phone is on android 9 MIUI 11.0.3.0 (if that helps).
I guess they'll use either the old computer to copy the videos/photos or I will just help them set up wireless connection.

I have the same issue, same circumstances, except that I have an intel i7-5500U Laptop. I reinstalled the USB drivers too and there was no effect on the issue. My RN8P keeps connecting and disconnecting from my laptop making file transfer nearly impossible. I also fear to change the recovery of my device in case it disconnects while the process is working. I encountered this issue in November when I first bought the device and I assumed it was a power issue from my laptop's USB port or something. It occurs irrespective of the USB C cables I use as well.
I tried and tested the phone with a cheaper laptop I got from university. It has an Intel M3 CPU I think. In my brief testing, I found no disconnect issue on that device. I am entirely confused as to why this happens. Blame mediatech I suppose.
Oh one more interesting piece of information. My phone appears as a collection of network drives, not as a flash drive. Even my Sd card appeared as a network drive. Could this have something to do with it? (Edit i just tested this again, and the phone now displays my drives as flash drives... weird)
I really want this issue to be fixed haha. I want to flash this phone soon.

i don't think it's a faulty cord,i've tried multiple,on ubuntu the device connects, but charges only, and doesn't appear to be detected,to me it seems like some sort of hardware incompatibility issue between mtk and certain ryzen hubs, as for dmesg,i'm not very familiar with it,but i'll let you know once i understand how to use it.

Again, what do you mean by "doesn't appear to be detected"? Does the kernel detect it? i.e. does it show up in lsusb and/or dmesg?
In case you're not familiar with those tools, just run lsusb and dmesg (no other options needed) before and after plugging in the device and check if anything changed in the output.

Hii dude i have the exact same problem. I have a redmi note 8 pro and an acer aspire 7 which has a ryzen 3550H chip . I have bought a usb hub and tried it and it worked . But it won't work in fastboot mode . When you turn the device into fastboot mode and connect the device to pc via a usb hub it keeps connecting and disconnecting . I want to install a custom rom on my RN8pro . I some how able to unlock the bootloader and now I'm trying to install custom recovery but because of this issue I can't install it . I have tried installing a lot of adb drivers , Xiaomi drivers, media tek drivers also every drivers on the pc but i think it's not the pc problem. I think it's the phones problem. If you find a solution for this please inform me . If you just want to transfer files from phone to pc then you can buy a usb hub then the phone storage will appear on the pc . But i have better solution. You can download a application called feem it is a wireless file transfer app and It works fine .
