Hello!
The problem is that themes are not applying when you install a EMUI 5 firmware from e.g. Firmware Finder.
Yesterday I've installed B340 firmware from a website and then I've updated to B350 through Settings > System Update.
Themes still wasn't working. I could open the app though, but themes weren't applying. Then I've searched for a solution and it turned out that other people had same/similar problem with other huawei phones.
REQUIREMENTS:
- EMUI 5
- Unlocked bootloader
- Rooted phone
- a file manager with root support ( im using the good old version of ES File Explorer; I suggest you Amaze too)

HOW TO FIX:
1) Clear cache for Themes app from Settings > Apps > Themes > Storage.
2) Install Huawei Mobile Services from Play Store.
3) Open Themes app and login with your Huawei ID.
4) Now close Themes.
5) Download those huawei themes and extract the zip somewhere(they're taken from B340 update_data_full_CAN-L11_hw_eu.zip, but the model or firmware version doesn't / shouldn't matter).
6) Open a file explorer with root support.
7) Create this folder: /data/hw_init/system/themes.
8) Put all huawei themes (.hwt format) which you've downloaded and extracted at step 5) to /data/hw_init/system/themes.
9) Set permission 0755 for folders and 0644 for files. Check the screenshots attached to the end of this post. You apply the permissions for system and themes folder as in first screenshot and for .hwt files as in second screenshot.
10) Reboot.
11) Open Themes app and apply a stock theme. Then you should be able to apply any downloaded theme.

Oh, well... i guess there isnt any solution for non rooted phones.
Regarding warranty, as far as ive read, the phone still has warranty even after unlocking the bootloader, assuming you relock it. Ive relocked my bnootloader two times already, but i didnt have time at all to make the guide.
The moral is.... wait for official ota when the device says theres an update..... dont use oter software to try to upgrade your phone...
youll end up with something not working at the end
Ive installed the Huawei internet service app...cant even launch it:silly:
i see it in the settings/applications and thats about it.... no app icon in drawer....

You mean Huawei Mobile Services? If yes, then I see that I can't find it neither in Settings.
However, if I search in Settings's search bar for "Huawei", then it show up.
It isn't an app for app drawer.

Well, it shows my Huawei acc when I touch it. I haven't opened it right after I've installed it though. It opened automatically when I've opened Themes app and I had to login.
Also, I don't have the gapps installed.

You need to unlock bootloader, flash TWRP and then flash phh SuperUser's zip in TWRP and then install it's app from play store.
Hi #Henkate,
in first place, thank you for your hard work to bring us custom recovery, root and roms for Nova. :good:
Please, I need advice, after I unlocked the bootloader on can-l11c432b382.
Which version of TWRP are you suggesting for flashing, right now? I'm little bit confused, because there is lots of versions.
Also, what root method is best for rooting can-l11c432b382 (phh or with Magisk)?
I'm currently interested in fixing Themes app on EMUI 5, and enjoying using root.
Thank you very much. With your guide I solved the issue with Themes with P10 and EMUI 5.1 (Kangvip ROM, Nougat, B217. Same files in the same indicated folder (I had to create all the subfolders under /system)..

I'm sorry for the late reply... I don't know how I've missed your post, but there's a chance that I've seen it and forgot to reply lol. Either way, if you mention my name or quote me, I'll get a notification so that assures that I'll see your post.
TWRP - I'd suggest Grarak's one or the one I've built and shared some time ago (it's newer). There's also one posted by @Temanyan in the first TWRP thread (if I'm not mistaken) and that one doesn't have the same problem with mounting /data (which can be solved by formatting /data on the other TWRPs).
ROOT - I'd suggest phh superuser because when I've tried Magisk I've lost root couple of times and I needed to reboot or reflash magisk zip... You know, that's annoying af. I'm never going back to Magisk unless the issue gets fixed.

My phone misissed cust
So can you tell me how to extract it from stock and flash it ( maybe this is the solution )
Note : when i open the themes app there is no login (huawei id) >> " number one in the instructions "
Hey, guys, I wanted to ask if someone tried OTA updates working with the new method of rooting released with magisk 14- a rooting method in which we do not need root or custom recovery beforehand, we just need to provide stock boot image dump to the magisk manager. This method will do us good because if OTA's still work after root we can be rooted on the stock roms without having to download full OTA's when a new update arrives. If someone can confirm working OTA's on the OOS open beta with this root method, it would be really helpful. Thank you!
As long as you take a backup of system and keep TWRP installed so you have a backup to revert to it should be fine. The risk of issues is just too high unless you don't give a **** about your personal data.

Well think of it about this. Magisk is just one big hack on the system partition. An OTA changes files on the system partition aswell. What if the OTA changes files that Magisk needs?
1. Your phone will go into a bootloop.
2. You might end up bricking it.
3. You just have to reflash Magisk.
4. Your phone becomes buggy as hell.
Thats why we also recommend to install the full zips when flashing roms and kernels that modify system because of possible conflicts.

Obviously I would uninstall magisk and then install ota and reinstall magisk. Magisk is systemless so I think there shouldn't be any problem.

You have missed the whole point of the post. This is a NEW method. Many people have not tried this method of root. So please, if you have any valuable information then only share. Do not litter. There should be logic to your answer and not general acceptance. Saying that many people do this or do that is not a very solid answer.

That doesn't matter. I get that it can be installed without a custom recovery. But that doesn't mean it won't conflict with possible ota's. Again, see it for yourself. Most people including me do rather play it the safe way.
I have recently updated to the lateset Oxygen OS Beta i had Magisk installed, i use Sparks Latest twrp version, with this you can install OTA updates. I dit not unlinstalled Magisk first, you do need the full rom file, but for me when i wanted to install the OTA, it found i had rooted and autmatacly downloaded the full rom. After you installed the update you can install the latest version of Magisk.
Hi at all,
I own this device for two months now and I have read a lot about rooting and flashing. It seems to be quite difficult compared to my former Samsung and Xiaomi devices...
To avoid any kind of bricking my phone I wanted to ask if there's a way to root it. I (still) have a locked bootloader and I installed the latest update to 7.1.1 with 1st July security patch.
Is there any safe way to root and install TWRP (and afterwards some ROMs of course)?
Thank you. :fingers-crossed:
I have root on my moto z play with stock 7.1.1. if you don't downgrade you don't get bricked
To unlock and install twrp :

And to root use this:

To root is better with magisk ( second link)because don't break SafetyNet and the link is a tutorial made by me so if have any questions you can ask in the thread.

If you are in 7.1.1, unlock your bootloader, download TWRP of @Alberto97 version 3.1.1-0(https://dc4.androidfilehost.com/dl/...673368273298955814/twrp-3.1.1-0-addison.img), flash it, download this kernel( https://drive.google.com/file/d/1i8PfTQ1e-WQkZ5-zD52HzWO3LZ5luaq_/view?usp=drivesdk) and the attached Magisk.zip.
Now, after you flashed the TWRP through Fastaboot, enter into recovery mode, select INSTALL, select the kernel and swipe to flash it. Then go back, select the Magisk.zip file to flash and swipe to flash it. After you do it, just reboot you device and check if the Magisk Manager app is installed, if it is, then open it, click on "check safety net", tap OK and wait until it tests the root hiding, if it says everything is okay, then everything is okay.
Congratulations, you are rooted now with Magisk and the Hiding Feature, you can play Pokemon go as well and the same for Snapchat and that stuffs that blocks rooted users from using their apps.

I've read that flashing a kernel when you're in 7.1.1 might cause problems. Did you try this steps being in 7.1.1 or they're just general steps?
In case you were in 7.1.1, did you install xposed after those steps?
Sorry if I ask many questions, but I want to be sure that I'll not brick my phone

no problem dude, i understand your concern, i'm just like this. Actually I was asking for help until last night and got all the answers.
flashing a kernel won't cause any problem since you do not flash any kernel but for your android version. The link i shared with you is a @logotoy73 kernel, he updated it last night and i used it. It's working properly and with no issues.
Today i've tried to install xposed, but due to the forced encryption in 7.1.1 it wasn't possible, even trying with the systemless xposed(magisk feature), maybe later i'll try again then i give you a feedback.
In magisk there are some xposed modules to be able to use it in nougat, but it caused me a bootloop.
If you follow exactly what i've said, you will be rooted in 7.1.1 in a few minutes!
Any problem you have, pm me so i could help you haha

I think creating a new post won't be necessary because kernel is already in @tomparr post, but in the last page of it, the twrp you cam download from Alberto's post, and magisk from the official thread(it's actually one of the most famous threads for now hahaha), but maybe if someone else have any issue with 7.1.1 i can create the post!
Edit. If i plan to try xposed again I tell you!
I have systemless xposed running on 7.1.1 with my kernel. After installing module xposed via twrp if a long start, helps reboot.

On the first site there is a tutorial linked, just follow it. Basically get rid of supersu first. Then the tutorial probably says that you have to install a custom kernel in order to just Magisk modules because the stock one is faulty. If you ask me that's shooting with guns on pidgins. The easiest way is to get the Magisk module F2FS loopback bug workaround. Google for it. When you have it and latest Magisk zip, go to TWRP, flash Magisk and the module, then reboot. Works perfectly, though you shouldn't ever wipe or format /cache because that's where Magisk is installed now, you'd loose it.

Hello peeps
I'm currently decrypted and on a custom pie rom. I want to go back to stock OOS again but I'm afraid that as soon as i will flash it and restart, it'll encrypt storage again.
So could anyone please share from their experience, how can i keep data decrypted and prevent force encryption to happen?
It's been a while since I've messed around with OOS, but *I think* flashing a root method or a custom kernel before booting into system should do the trick.

Hello,
I flashed Magisk 17.1 before booting into the system but unfortunately, it didn't work. So we can safely mark it off for future suggestions, both of us, lol.
I will do my research and see what can be done to preserve a decrypted storage.

A little research will have told you what you needed to know. You need a kernel hat supports the no_force_encryption flag and the device has to be unencrypted to start with.
Magisk will do nothing for this.

Hi there!
I want to root my Redmi Note 8 Pro (which is already unlocked) but in most of the instructions I came across a requirement in order to do so is to be on A9.
My RN8PRO is on the european firmware 12.0.1.0 QGGEUXM so I downloaded the A9 european fastboot firmware V11.0.3.0.PGGEUXM | MIUI 11 from "xiaomifirmware.com".
I then downloaded MI FLASH PRO (v. 5.3.714.36) and I'm about to downgrade. Is there any pointer or further recommendation to follow in order not to screw things up (like any Anti-Rollback Protection that might block the smartphone)?
In Mi Flash Pro I should just click on the "Mi Flash" tab, then select the firmware downloaded (and extracted), hit "refresh", then "flash" and that's it right?
Thank you.

You don't need to downgrade to root, unless you want to use CWF recovery and ROMs.

Hi donkyshot, I didn't know that. But maybe I should be more specific: I wish to root with magisk so that I can use it's "hide root" function and use it for all the banking apps that just won't run on rooted devices.
Anyway I think it would be still wise to downgrade and put the preloader just to be safe in case I forget (I'm sure that I'll forget and having a rooted device will make me think that I can easily put a Custom rom down the road and I will brick the device), or also the preloader can be installed without having to downgrade?

Again, if you want to hide magisk you don't have to downgrade. It's working on A10.
Hiding magisk doesn't seem to work on all banking apps though.
Rooting is easy, and relatively safe as long as you follow the instructions, use correct A10 recovery and close avb.
Downgrading is risky too.
But you're right, the preloader only works on Android 9.
Remember if you'll update back to miui 11/12 android 10 you'll lose the preloader.
But if you'll decide later to just flash a custom rom it won't work with just the preloader, you'll need cfw too.
But yes it will save you from a total brick, as long as you don't flash miui rom or ota.
Read the cfw thread carefully https://forum.xda-developers.com/redmi-note-8-pro/how-to/guide-redmi-note-8-pro-megathread-t4056527
There have been reports of camera issues with latest models because of firmware and the preloader.
Don't flash or update up to the latest magisk 21, it's bootlooping on mediatek devices.
Good luck and happy flashing.

You gave me a lot of valuable information, thank you!
Now I have to decide which route to follow. Have a great day!

Hi there.
I'm sorry to bother you again, but during these days I read a lot of posts in different threads just to be more and more confused (some things I learned though ).
At a certain point I decided to follow your advice and just root my phone and not downgrade to A9 so to take the safest route (I'm fine using MIUI for the time being and don't need custom roms), but I'm not sure where to find a safe/trusted recovery for A10 since most of the instructions use recovery for A9.
Do you or anyone else have any tips?

Sure! I'm going to do it tomorrow since here it's after midnight and I feel a little bit sleepy. I want a fresh and sharp mind when I do these things. I'll report tomorrow!

 Yes I got root!
Now I just have to investigate if I can use the app "Migrate" on the RN8PRO to restore all the app+data of my previous cell (Redmi Note 4x) that wasn't restored with Google backup and Xioami's "Mi Mover".
Since the "Migrate" app requires flashing the backup via TWRP and knowing that the RN8PRO is somehow picky I want to double check if it's possible, although I think that it should be fine.

Great. Don't have experience myself with migrate app, I'm using titanium.
European update 12.0.2.0 has dropped. I'll put steps later how to update through twrp without losing data.

That's very cool, but now I have doubt, updating via twrp is mandatory now that I have a rooted device (I don't think so, but I just want to be sure) or is it just because the update wasn't pushed via OTA yet?
I know that with CFW and the preloader is a whole different story, but it shouldn't be a problem to update via OTA on a rooted phone right?
Oh god I'm confused. I'm intend to unlock bootloader and install Magisk, is the image in post #7 good for that? Do I need anything else? Sorry for my stupidity, I'm just confused with all the different guides and files :/
Edit: I'm on MIUI 12.0.1 global (QGGEUXM), Android 10

Yes, recovery from my post #7 should work for you.
Follow these instructions: https://forum.xda-developers.com/redmi-note-8-pro/how-to/guide-unlock-bootloader-flash-twrp-root-t3995919
You can update magisk through the app, stable channel only. Version 21 causes bootloops.

Is this non-CFW A10 recovery? Or CFW A10 recovery?
Thanks in advance

If you want to flash custom ROMs, you'll need to follow this thread.
Read the thread carefully and please ask questions there, I have no experience with custom ROM on this device.
