Hey all,
I'm a bit of a nub at this, but can I boot into TWRP and root my OP3, without losing stock recovery? If I remember correctly from a while back, when I Odin'd TWRP to a Samsung device, it asked me if I wanted to install TWRP and allow system modification. If I choose not to, will I keep both stock and root?
Thanks!
I am no expert by any means, but for my Nexus 6, I could use the nexus root toolkit to boot into twrp without changing the recovery. It used 'fastboot boot' command I believe, so you should be able to accomplish the same by typing 'fastboot boot twrp.img'.

I selected "don't allow system modifications" when it came up but it kept twrp so the stock OP3 rom does not overwrite your custom recovery. Though my ota installed fine using twrp so I see no reason to use the stock recovery.

It DOES still required an unmodded + system never being mounted r/w just fyi.
I just got my oneplus 3 and I really wanna root it to be able to switch out the stock android emoji's. On my OPO I were able to temporary run TWRP to get root but on this people are saying different things. AM I able to temporary run TWRP with fastboot boot blabla and then flash SuperSU and then still have stock recovery because I really don't wanna have TWRP if I can't update using the OTA's. And emoji switcher requires root so
Or am I able to flash TWRP, Flash SuperSU and then download emoji switcher and get my iphone emojis and then update with OTA not by flashing?

Hi,
Normally I'd search but as this is a non Nexus I am going to be cautious and patient. I would like to know how to block any OTA. I am rooted with TWRP flashed and I'm happy on M with xposed. I've had N and I'm in no rush for the bugs and whatnot and I'd rather keep xposed.
So for the Moto z play what is the best way to block OTA updates, and how would it be reverted, should I ever care about N.
Thanks in advance.
You may try DisableService, it should help.
Edit: Guess the right one is "Motorola Updateservices" on System Tab

This forum is crazy chomping at the bit for 7.0 and not 7.11.
I have stopped the Update without root.
If you have any kind of modification on your software, be it root or TWRP, you don't have to stop anything since the OTA will not install at all, even if you wanted to. You have to go back to full stock to install any official OTAs.

You missed the part about re-enable OTA. Just disabling the service is easy to enable again. For your idea: Take a Nandroid backup of boot, system and recovery and restore if OTA wanted?
Just an addition: It's not always easy to fulfill the conditions for OTA when rooted. Mainly: Original recovery. No whatsoever modification of /system (AdAway, Xposed, build.prop etc.). And if I'm right informed, it fails if you undo some modification, because it works on blocks, not file based.

Didn't read or see that part.
Unfortunately the way to restore your system to stock is you'll have to flash all the sparsechunks, recovery, boot.img and the OEM.img.
May probably can just leave your data alone .
Just a note, as soon as nougat drops and I get my hands on the firmware, I'll be hopefully building a stock nougat ROM.

If Xposed is installed without Magisk, and twrp flashed, this is the way to go anyway.

You can. Did this several times. Flashed July (August?) security ROM, update September and October, try flash Magisk, restore Nandroid boot, recovery and system - not working, start over. After updates flash Magisk and phh superuser, working fine. All this without change to data. Of course this only works if you stay on compatible ROM. Probably it should be stock or at least some only slightly modified.
Just got a 10 Factory Unlocked. I do need to root for Xprivacy and AdAway, etc. and of course, to make a nandroid. I suppose I could use ADB for such a thing, but TWRP surely does make life easier.
Since this is the first phone I've ever had that was already unlocked, I'm not quite sure where to start with rooting. I'm a little concerned because I'm seeing posts discussing how the radio might go wonky. Not ready to flash a custom ROM yet, I just want to dip my toe in the water for now.
I'd be grateful if someone could point the way.
BTW, the faceplate on my 10 is white, I was expecting black based on all the photos I've seen. Is this because I got the Factory Unlocked edition?
Thanks in advance!
is it on nougat or still marshmallow? i think nougat right? Xposed won't work on nougat anyway and you don't need to worry about the radio. if it's unlocked already and want to just root and you need to pass safetynet, get magisk v12. first you need to flash twrp and then flash the magisk zip to get root and be able to pass safetynet, be sure to not flash anything which modifies directly the system, otherwise no stock OTA and some apps won't work even if you use magisk hide

Haven't even turned the phone on yet - letting her charge to 100% before I do anything. I'm confused - why would I need to unlock the bootloader if I already have an unlocked phone? Or by 'Factory Unlocked' do they mean SIM unlocked, versus bootloader unlocked?

Not familiar with 'safetynet', and yes - I do need Xposed therefore it will modify the /system partition so far as I understand.
In any event, it sounds like the starting point is TWRP for anything to do with root, correct?

yes you need twrp, without it no root... the thing is there is no Xposed for nougat and I think your phone came with android 7/ nougat right? if yes, forget Xposed. but you can use apps like adaway with magisk too.
So that'S why you should search for the Magisk thread and read everything about it, before you proceed

No, the HTC 10 shipped with MM. I guess I'll have to fire her up and see where I'm at.
So, assuming that I'm on MM, then it's just TWRP, flash SuperSU from recovery, install Xposed and I'm off and running - nothing extra, correct?
How would I make a Nandroid of the current factory ROM (all partitions - not file based) using ADB just in case?

yea if MM then it's that easy.
full stock nandroid can be done in twrp, there you can backup system, data, boot and recovery
also the system image, but don't know if you need that, but you can try to backup it too, be sure to have enough space

flash magisk v12 then you have root and also can use android pay and other apps which needs passed safetynet
if you don't mind safetynet, you can also use systemless supersu
To the OP, surely factory unlocked indicates unlocked to all networks rather than bootloader unlocked ? Check this first to save some hassle. If the bootloader isn't unlocked yet, you could consider sunshine s off , it will cost you but on mm firmware you can s off and stay locked which can be an advantage. Worth checking bootloader status first though

What exactly do you need xposed for? It won't work once you updated to Nougat. And Nougat is much better tan Marshmallow at least as far as I'm concerned. All I need I've been able to find on custom ROMs and or by additional root Apps.

Can't go Nougat until Xposed is up and running.
So far:
Unlocked bootloader and went S-off via Sunshine
Installed TWRP
Made the error of allowing modification before taking a backup - not sure if I'm hosed.
Flashed SuperSU SR3 following Chainfire's instructions to send command via ADB
Flashed Xposed
Next: TiBu and restoring apps.

No big deal. I'm not ready for Nougat until Xposed is running. However, HTC has an RUU available already, so we're good to go.
http://www.htc.com/us/support/htc-10/news/
And of course, if I get bored, there are any number of custom ROMs available. I was running Maximus on my M9, I'd probably go that route again.
Hey, guys, I wanted to ask if someone tried OTA updates working with the new method of rooting released with magisk 14- a rooting method in which we do not need root or custom recovery beforehand, we just need to provide stock boot image dump to the magisk manager. This method will do us good because if OTA's still work after root we can be rooted on the stock roms without having to download full OTA's when a new update arrives. If someone can confirm working OTA's on the OOS open beta with this root method, it would be really helpful. Thank you!
As long as you take a backup of system and keep TWRP installed so you have a backup to revert to it should be fine. The risk of issues is just too high unless you don't give a **** about your personal data.

Well think of it about this. Magisk is just one big hack on the system partition. An OTA changes files on the system partition aswell. What if the OTA changes files that Magisk needs?
1. Your phone will go into a bootloop.
2. You might end up bricking it.
3. You just have to reflash Magisk.
4. Your phone becomes buggy as hell.
Thats why we also recommend to install the full zips when flashing roms and kernels that modify system because of possible conflicts.

You have missed the whole point of the post. This is a NEW method. Many people have not tried this method of root. So please, if you have any valuable information then only share. Do not litter. There should be logic to your answer and not general acceptance. Saying that many people do this or do that is not a very solid answer.

That doesn't matter. I get that it can be installed without a custom recovery. But that doesn't mean it won't conflict with possible ota's. Again, see it for yourself. Most people including me do rather play it the safe way.
I have recently updated to the lateset Oxygen OS Beta i had Magisk installed, i use Sparks Latest twrp version, with this you can install OTA updates. I dit not unlinstalled Magisk first, you do need the full rom file, but for me when i wanted to install the OTA, it found i had rooted and autmatacly downloaded the full rom. After you installed the update you can install the latest version of Magisk.

I would stay away from custom roms, I have seen too many people having problems. Secondly as of right now, A12 is buggy so that is why I stay with stock A11 from T-Mobile. With the setup I can give you, you can have any custom bootanimation and custom systemwide font you want.....
First off, download and install Magisk v25.2 app from GitHub website and install it to your phone. Next download the attached file to the folder with your platform files.....
Download Magisk from this link to your phone and install it.
https://github.com/topjohnwu/Magisk/releases/download/v25.2/Magisk-v25.2.apk
Then download this link to your platform tools folder on PC...
Download twrp-3.6.2_11-0-lemonadep.img
Download page for twrp-3.6.2_11-0-lemonadep.img
dl.twrp.me
Then download this link to your phone storage...

Bricked as in black screen? Or does it boot to fastboot? What version of lineage are you trying to run? And what OOS were you on? You need to be on OOS 12 to run lineage 19. And twrp is not the recovery to use for that.
