hi guys i have a real bad problem...woke up this morning and my desire wouldnt wake up when pressing the power button...screen turned on after i put the charger in but when the auto screen off turns the screen off i cant wake again until i attach the charger.also with a battery pull the phone turns off but then when i put the battery back in the phone automatically boots without touching the power button

My money is on a hardware failure. Do you have a stock ROM ?
hey yea i went and unrooted and reinstalled my carriers stock ruu....still same problem.looks like taking it back to the shop for them to fix
Hey actually exactly one week ago my Desire started the same exact thing, and I could not find help anywhere. Best info I can find is that it might be moisture, but at least for me I don't think that is the case.
I ended up taking the whole phone apart (been taking stuff apart all my life, but i was still nervous) to clean it out since I've had dust in the screen for a while... I think I cleaned it out pretty well, but did not take the plastic tape off the button. This did not immediately help, but after playing with it for a while it now works most of the time, but is quite sensitive usually.. the button "presses" before it mechanically "clicks".
Anyway, If you were to become desperate enough to try this, I would recommend pulling that black plastic tape off the button when cleaning, then stick it back on. Good luck

yea im not into pulling stuff apart that i got no idea about...took it back still under warranty n its getting sent in for repair...now stuck with a piece of **** samsung omina icon....windows phone sucks the big one very hard...ill be going back and asking for at least an android as a loaner while its in for repair
ohh well that's good that it's still under warranty. I was actually using the camera at a beach during hurricane Irene and that night the power button went berserk.. continuously turning the screen on and off... before eventually just staying "pressed" all the time again. So maybe the moisture theory isn't all that far fetched in my case (I was at a beach the first time it happened, but never went near the water)

I've met with that problem.
I've unscrewed the device, I've remove the black tape, and I've used a cotton swab to clear it.
But the problem was solved, but later withing the 24hrs, It's back to auto on/off without pressing the button.
I would like to know, Should I remove the yellow transparent tape on the button for cleaning?

I just got my Xperia play today and notice that I can hardly feel the button being pushed down (power button). Is this supposed to happen? First time it worked fine, but now it won't even work (e.g. to turn the screen on etc).
Should I give it a few days to see if it wears in, or return it? Thanks
Fully agree with you on this. I got mine yesterday and the button was sticking. There must be some sort of knack to put the battery cover on.
Would filing down the plastic be the answer? Seems a bit odd to resort to this when it should just work.
If it isn't working now to even turn the screen on, you should return it and get another, the sooner the better . Mine works fine, always some response from it.

I've got the same thing ; resorted to keeping the case around the power button slightly open - works fine like that.
Well what I meant was that it was so far stuck down that pressing it had no effect whatsoever. Even if I tried to use my fingernail to dig into the button, nothing happened. It returned to the normal state after pulling the back cover and put it back again, but after a bit of mashing the power button round, it got stuck and became useless again.
I was thinking of filing the back cover a bit, but I might as well return it instead.
I've just got mine unlocked (via Jinx13) so I'm loathed to return mine now. Let me know how the filing goes

This happened to mine too.
It resulted in the button acting like I was long pressing it when I was simply tapping it.
It seems the top of the button was getting stuck on the casing, I flicked it off the casing a few times and haven't any problems in a while.
But still, seems an issue.

Yesterday and today, things have gotten worse. If I tap the button to turn the phone off, I get one of several responses. Nothing happens, or the phone turns off then turns back on a couple seconds later, or I get the power options menu as if I were holding the power button.
Sometimes the phone will just spontaneously turn on with nobody touching it.
I have kept it in a silicon case the past two years that keeps dirt out of the controls. I wash the case at least weekly and make sure there is no cruft buildup in it or on the phone.
I have tried using a duster can to blow out around the power button. Sometimes it seems to help momentarily. Other times there is no effect at all.
Anybody ideas or suggestions?

Mine use to do that because it would get stuck against the cut out for it in the back cover. I just took a file and made the cut out where the button fits slightly bigger, and all has been well since. Good way to test is to leave the battery cover off, press the button a couple times and see if it still gets stuck.
I took the back of the case off yesterday and tried a few times. Results were still random.
It almost acts as if there is something down inside the switch itself.
Thinking seriously about going online and activating the Boss Lady's old DInc and using it for a few months.
I had this same problem with mine a while back. The screen would turn on at the slightest tap and if I tapped the button to turn it off the power menu would come on. I wound up taking it to best buy and collecting the insurance policy I had on it, refurbed dinc was the result. It seemed to be an issue with dirt/dust in the power button.
If you don't have insurance and are willing to void any warranty you may have crack it open and take a can of compressed air to it... but this should be your last option.

It definitely has grime underneath it.Use a can of compressed air or an air compressor tank with air gun to blow it out. Smart-phones don't take kindly to being taken apart.
As I said in the OP, "I have tried using a duster can to blow out around the power button."
So disassembly and blowing out the case did not work.

Saturday night, gave up and ordered RAZR MAXX.
Sunday morning (and ever since), no problems!

I have the p600, bought at Best Buy a few days after launch. Have it rooted using auto root. It has been running perfectly until today. It started taking a few presses of the power button to turn it on after the screen went to sleep, I thought nothing of it and assumed I was just not pressing the button hard enough.
Then a few hours ago, it just stopped turning on again after the screen went to sleep. If I power it off (long press on power button) it will reboot and the display is on again, and it works fine until it goes back to sleep.
After pressing the power button, the menu and back button light up, and If I hold the tablet in a bright light, I can see the images on the screen. So I know the LCD is working, but for some reason the back light won't turn back on after going to sleep. If it were a bad back light, then obviously it wouldn't work again after rebooting.
I tried a factory wipe - same problem
I did an Odin flash with MK1 stock rom - same problem
I suspect a hardware issue, but Ive been reading about this "sleep of death" that can happen with android devices. Fixes range from installing new kernels to replacing the device.
Anyone experience this or know what is going on?
**UPDATE**
A possible fix for this (and it worked for me) is to take the back cover off, disconnect the battery, and plug it back in again.
I have included pictures of what you are looking for.
When taking the back cover off, I was able to do it with just a credit card. Start at the charge port and carefully get between the casing at the cover, move around the outside, popping the outside clips (look at the photo of this). The inner clips will still be holding after you get all the way around, then simply work out the inner clips 1 at a time. It was a little difficult the first time because I wasn't sure how it was attached, but the second time I took it off, it was pretty straight forward.
When putting the cover back on, follow the same procedure. Start at the charge port, get those clips in, then work your way around the outside, careful not to push to hard on the inner part of the tablet, apply your force at the edges. once the edges are clipped in all the way around, simply press in the inner clips (you will feel them snap in)
I can post more pictures for people who want them. I might even make a short video of the procedure, all in all, its pretty straight forward. It's a relatively easy cover to remove.

Battery connector removed (you will see, it is just the white part that comes out, use a small screwdriver or pry tool just behind the wires, and lift up, its cliped on the sides)
These are the internal and external clips, you will see that the "hole" looking ones are the internals, they are in there pretty good, take care when prying them out not to damage the cover or clip mount
Interesting.. I just received my p600 today. I had an occurrence similar to this - I hope there isn't some flaw in them we are uncovering... I'll have to wait a week or two before rooting to see if it occurs again.

ya, good idea on the root. Im not sure how the warranty bit being tripped is going to play out should I need a replacement given that we don't even have custom kernels or rom's yet.
I am going to downgrade the firmware to MJ4 and cross my fingers. Wish there was a faster way to DL these other than slow ass sammobile lol.
Had the same issue on my 10-day old device during a flight back from the US to the UK which was highly inconvenient.
Anyway, what I noticed was that when opening the magnet cover or turning on from sleep, the tablet actually woke up (touch buttons lit up) but the screen backlight wasn't turning on (if I held it at a certain angle, I could see that the screen was showing the home page but just no backlight).
Another side effect of this was that, even after rebooting and having the screen backlight on, the brightness setting was doing nothing.. I could set it to auto or manual brightness and adjust the slider and it stayed the same brightness regardless. As with others, a factory restore had no effect.
In the end, given that I'm kind of boned for the US warranty living in the UK anyway, I just opened it, disconnected the battery connector, reconnected it and started it up. After that, no problem.. brightness and wake-from-sleep started working again no problem.

I am using the the bookcover also, wonder if the magnetic cover is somehow screwing it up. Im glad you said you opened it up to DC the battery. That was on my list of things to try! too bad there isn't a way to DC the battery with a USB jig. cross some wires or something.. as a EE, one would think I would know a trick that would accomplish that.. lol.
im downgrading firmware and going to do a full nand-erase with bootloader update, and see what happens

After playing with it for several minutes to ensure it was working (turning it off and on a few times over and over) I put the rear cover back on. But as soon as I had done that, the problem started again.
I removed the cover again.. unplugged the battery.. but this time, after plugging it back in, the problem remained. After a few more unplug/repluging of the battery and it not working, I decided to unplug the LCD, digitizer, and the backlight ribbon cables. I booted the device without these attached, let it boot fully, then powered it down, removed the battery connector, re-attached the ribbon cables then the battery, booted it again, and the screen was back to normal.
Ill keep playing around with this to see if isolate the problem, but it seems like there is something going on with the connectors, or some sensor/detector/controller getting "software stuck". When the screen is turned off, this sensor/detector/controller is either not getting the right information sent to it, or, it is has gotten stuck in some process it can't resolve (happens a lot in hardware engineering). It can happen when something shorts, and sends the device into a shutdown state (watchdog trips). The rear motherboard has A LOT of flex to it, and I had to push kinda hard on the rear cover to re-attach it. I wonder if when the back of the tablet gets pushed in just the right way, in just the right spot, it causes this screen issue to happen.
Either way, this is pretty unacceptable for a $600 device. The good news is that there is no warrant seal on the rear cover.
After use auto root. did you reinstall stock recovery?.

How difficult is it to remove the back cover? Any plastic damage caused?

Already took em That was the first thing I thought of when I was taking it apart. I will try to get them posted soon.
Tablet turned on and off like normal yesterday and today. Not a single forced reboot was required. However, while taking notes today, I noticed a dead zone on the right side of the screen. Touch works fine there(with fingers), but the spen won't work. It just jumps over the area. The affected area is a vertical line from top to bottom.
Since I have not been using the spen lately, I can't be sure if it is a symptom of the sleep of death, or a result of removing the ribbon cables and not seating them properly when I reattached them. I'm going reseat the cables and see what happens.
I just got my Note tonight and have this same issue. I got it at Amazon and it came with both seals broken as others have found. Was surprised it seemed to already be on, when I hit the power button the buttons lit up but no screen. Grabbed a flashlight and could see the backlight wasn't turning on. Tried turning it off and back on, or so I thought, but no dice. I figured I had a bad unit and set up the RMA with Amazon.
I then went and stuck it on the charger and held the power button for a long time, and the charging screen popped up. Turned it on, seemed to be working fine until I hit the power button, and then the backlight wouldn't turn back on again until I rebooted it. I took all of the updates and did another factory reset, same issue.
Now, I also bought a smart cover. After taking the updates but before the reset I tried it, it'd shut off the Note but the backlight still wouldn't turn on when I opened it up. HOWEVER, after the factory reset, I opened and closed it a few times and it worked correctly. I then tried the power button a couple of times and it also worked correctly. For the record, my brightness controls DO work correctly.
At this point I'm not sure what to do. I _really_ want this tablet, and Amazon is out of stuck so I can only return it for a refund. I don't want to do that since I got it on sale and it no longer is.
EDIT: Also, I just tried closing my smart cover and hitting the power button with the cover still closed, and the screen DID turn on. So I'm not sure if that partially throws the theory of the magnet going out of whack out the window or not, since it should turn on even if the cover is closed.

I just checked Amazon and they have them in stock. Do you think maybe because so many people are getting replacements over and over they are just recycling them and selling them as "new?" Do you have the link to where people are reporting getting them with both seals broken? Thanks.

I got mine from BH Photo. It works perfectly and all seals were intact when I opened it.

i just drop my p600, all the digitizer is broken now, but its still working, i dont want to tear down it, because it can stop working, so, can you please tell me if the digitizer is atached (glue and heat) to the screen, or is it just a plastic holder as its predecessor note 10.1?...

Just someone post the images of rear back of Note 10.1 (2014) for both P601 and P600 to see the diff when Disassemble the P601 and P600 for replacement purpose?
(mine is P601 and i think i need replace SIM card holder-it's broken since few times take it in-out).

Taking into account the shock of impact, it is normal to my opinion to have strange behaviour of the device...
Would be better to have full time access to battery in order to make hard reset ... or to have dedicated button for this purpose.
