I just got my Xperia play today and notice that I can hardly feel the button being pushed down (power button). Is this supposed to happen? First time it worked fine, but now it won't even work (e.g. to turn the screen on etc).
Should I give it a few days to see if it wears in, or return it? Thanks
Fully agree with you on this. I got mine yesterday and the button was sticking. There must be some sort of knack to put the battery cover on.
Would filing down the plastic be the answer? Seems a bit odd to resort to this when it should just work.
If it isn't working now to even turn the screen on, you should return it and get another, the sooner the better . Mine works fine, always some response from it.

I've got the same thing ; resorted to keeping the case around the power button slightly open - works fine like that.
Well what I meant was that it was so far stuck down that pressing it had no effect whatsoever. Even if I tried to use my fingernail to dig into the button, nothing happened. It returned to the normal state after pulling the back cover and put it back again, but after a bit of mashing the power button round, it got stuck and became useless again.
I was thinking of filing the back cover a bit, but I might as well return it instead.
I've just got mine unlocked (via Jinx13) so I'm loathed to return mine now. Let me know how the filing goes

This happened to mine too.
It resulted in the button acting like I was long pressing it when I was simply tapping it.
It seems the top of the button was getting stuck on the casing, I flicked it off the casing a few times and haven't any problems in a while.
But still, seems an issue.
I have a similar issue or had. I was able to wiggle it free gently.
Noticed it was the hard case protector I bought for it.... It's temporary for now until my skin comes then will go caseless.

hi guys i have a real bad problem...woke up this morning and my desire wouldnt wake up when pressing the power button...screen turned on after i put the charger in but when the auto screen off turns the screen off i cant wake again until i attach the charger.also with a battery pull the phone turns off but then when i put the battery back in the phone automatically boots without touching the power button

Hey actually exactly one week ago my Desire started the same exact thing, and I could not find help anywhere. Best info I can find is that it might be moisture, but at least for me I don't think that is the case.
I ended up taking the whole phone apart (been taking stuff apart all my life, but i was still nervous) to clean it out since I've had dust in the screen for a while... I think I cleaned it out pretty well, but did not take the plastic tape off the button. This did not immediately help, but after playing with it for a while it now works most of the time, but is quite sensitive usually.. the button "presses" before it mechanically "clicks".
Anyway, If you were to become desperate enough to try this, I would recommend pulling that black plastic tape off the button when cleaning, then stick it back on. Good luck

yea im not into pulling stuff apart that i got no idea about...took it back still under warranty n its getting sent in for repair...now stuck with a piece of **** samsung omina icon....windows phone sucks the big one very hard...ill be going back and asking for at least an android as a loaner while its in for repair
ohh well that's good that it's still under warranty. I was actually using the camera at a beach during hurricane Irene and that night the power button went berserk.. continuously turning the screen on and off... before eventually just staying "pressed" all the time again. So maybe the moisture theory isn't all that far fetched in my case (I was at a beach the first time it happened, but never went near the water)

I've met with that problem.
I've unscrewed the device, I've remove the black tape, and I've used a cotton swab to clear it.
But the problem was solved, but later withing the 24hrs, It's back to auto on/off without pressing the button.
I would like to know, Should I remove the yellow transparent tape on the button for cleaning?

Hi everyone, so my Power/Lock button on my Gnex came unresponsive as of last night.
When i woke up this morning it worked! but only once , then randomly it just started working again, and then 10 minutes later nothing.
When i pull the battery, and put it back in it will power on immediately.
At the moment, if i press it, it will work once, then wont work again for another minute or so.
I'm running a custom rom, i did a reset, cleared all my data and it still persists. Running CNA, was thinking of trying to flash back to Stock but the custom rom allows the option to wake the device with the volume buttons, which is the only reason i can even wake it at the moment.
Its still under warranty, however i would go a atleast 2-4 weeks without seeing the phone and have to send it away.
I was thinking of opening it up myself (following the dissasembly videos on youtube, only need to remove 6 screws and use the little plastic pryer to seperate from the screen i think.)
Heres pretty much my question:
With the Galaxy Nexus, is there some sort of sticker that will be broken once i open up the phone that will void the warranty? If i can't fix it, will they know that its been opened?
If not, i'm going to open it up, see if the connector has come loose or something which is what i hope, otherwise for $5 i can get a replacement button & ribbon off ebay, which i would prefer to do then go through the hassle of sending away for warranty.
EDIT: Also think the reason the connector has become faulty is due to water, it was raining last night and was using my phone as a flashlight to walk up the backyard of my house. It got exposed to the rain, Everything was fine, but when i plugged my phone into the charger was when the button stopped responding. I'm guessing some water must have got into where the power button is.

I was gonna suggest the ifixit or adam outler's vids as to if there will be signs its been opened, but it seems you've already watched those videos.. supposedly the led will be lit red if there is a more serious internal water damage issue, which would completely void your warranty, i believe, so it seems like you may have to tear it down.
So after finally fixing all the other issues i had with my phone (broken screen, broken vibrate motor, broken speaker) i was finally at ease. It lasted for about a week with everything functioning until now the phone gods have again struck me down. This time i have what is referred to as a Power Cycle. Kind of like a boot-loop except the phone completely boots up into my homescreen then the power options menu pops up, and no matter if i click back or not, that **** is going to reboot on me. Its to a point where if i pop in the battery the phone auto boots. Here's the kicker though. If i take off the back case and just set it on the battery with an open back, it doesnt power cycle. But the power button on the case itself is not stuck as you may be thinking as i can depress it and the cover spring pushes it back. I've hard reset, even went back to complete stock (no root) and it still does it. the power button works (very sensitive) if you have no case on the back, but if that thing is on, it acts like the button is being pressed.
Any Ideas?
Sounds like the power button is stuck... Try taking the phone apart and cleaning the contacts. Then press the power button a few times to ensure it works like it is supposed to. Put everything back together, tighten the screws but don't torque them. Should not turn on after you put the battery back in, wait a few to make sure it doesn't. Then power it on and see how it goes.

still didnt work. i used some rubbing alcohol and a lint free cloth on it. the interesting thing is, when you take the case off, if you set your finger over where the button is (making no contact) it still registers that you are touching it. this is what i think is causing it to power cycle when the phone case is on, as it believes that it is being pressed when it isnt.

I had almost the exact same problem with my Epic Touch. Ended up being a bad power switch. How handy are you with a soldering iron? If you're pretty good, you can buy the switch for ~$10 and replace it yourself. (You can also try cleaning it - several tutorials here, and the "Captivate" phone seems to have the same switch and issues. Search both forums)
Several eBay sellers sell the switch you'll need.
So during my holiday my HOX got splashed with a bit of water from a wave. The battery was running on fumes and, when I looked at it, the phone was dead. It did turned on later while in my pocket and I happened to press the power button.
I let it dry on rice and nothing. I made the potential mistake of trying to charge it so it would heat up and it wouldn't charge. I then bought another mobile and, just to try it, I took opened the HOX and hoovered. Nothing.
Miracle happened yesterday when, just for kicks, I tried the charger again. It power up!! Everything seems fine, no visible screen damage, wifi works, everything works just fine but... screen won't respond to touch on the very bottom, say, the capacitive and menu buttons (the ones just above the capacitive ones).
What do you guys think? Is the screen dead there, maybe I didn't put the screen back properly or should I wait as some moister might yet be there?

This is a flashback to me. Same thing happened to me few weeks ago - first 3 bottom buttons stoped working, and now 7 days ago part of touch screen is not working anymore. I am going to replace lcd+digitizer+frame, lucky me nothing else need to be fixed. And IMHO trying to heat closed HTC when water was in it doesn't make a sense as a water will condense (as it is closed) so it would make more damage. Oxidation sucks :/
I do have the SIM slot opened but yeah, that's a tinny opening, not much space for water vapour to escape... it's been a few weeks since I thought it had died though, it's pretty amazing to me that it came back at all. Some tough phones, these...
Anyway, I think I'll try to take the screen out again, I wasn't too careful putting it back in because I saw it wasn't charging or powering up or anything at all.
Hey all, so I just replaced the screen (followed the great guide on this site) and now I'm getting some odd behavior when trying to boot.
The power button is completely unresponsive. When I plug the phone into power, the LG screen comes up for ~3 seconds, as normal. The LED is flashing thru all the colors per the usual as well. Then the screen goes black for another 3 seconds, all the while the LED flashing. Then LG pops up again just for a moment, then to the normal phone-is-off-but-charging screen, with the LED flashing red.
Really don't know what to make of this. I had it rooted with a one-click root from here. The only changes were deleting stock apps and enabling the front touch keys (but never had an issue with it booting after this, I did that at least a week ago). Also my PC recognizes that something is plugged in, so I guess that's good.
Thoughts?
Update: tried booting into recovery mode, I held the buttons for much longer than normal to no response. As soon as I let go, I get the LG screen. Then black. Then LG. Then an unusually long AT&T screen, then it booted. Now the power button works as it should, and it boots in that same odd fashion. And it seems that I can not go into recovery. Yikes.
I'd be fine with that except I have a dead zone across the lower portion of the screen, it's about a half inch tall and about covers the asdfgh... row of the keyboard. Weirdly if I start pressing on any other key and then swipe to any area in the "dead" zone it WILL register, as in, I can select the S key, normally in the dead zone, but swiping to it from a working area. Will try soaking the mobo in alcohol and swabbing the digitzer connector with a q-tip. Any other thoughts?
Update 2: I tried cleaning the contacts of the digitzer connection- both the end of the cable and the motherboard connection- with rubbing alcohol. Reassembled, and we're back to square one. Power button unresponsive, when plugged in I'll get the LG screen, then black, then the LG screen will flash and I'll get the chargining screen. But now, trying to boot into recovery mode does nothing. So then I soaked the mobo in alcohol, and cleaned ALL the contacts and ribbon cables on the frame. Reassembled, no change. I really hope someone sees this, as I'm at he end of my tech know-how. Tonight I'll try to reconnect my old touchscreen and see what happens. Maybe the new one is just defective? But you'd think the phone would still turn on...
God I hope somebody sees this. I feel like a complete nut talking to myself.

Okay sounds like a hardware issue with the power button being unresponsive. I would take the device apart look around all connections of the power button and look for any hair line cracks or dirty, sticky, grimmy connections. Try cleaning upall that stuff, while there I would look at the digitizer and clean that up. When done flash a new rom with the LG flash tool, allow boot and reboot normally several times before testing. I hope this helps I am new to the phone and have yet to get my repair kit for it so I will not know much more about it till I get into it myself. Hair line cracks can be easily fixed as long as its on the sadder areas. Just re sadder it

Now for the weird flashing on and off booting mine does this as well but all functions regardless are working flawlessly. My phone will need serious structural repairs but nothing I can't do just had a horrible owner. Definitely worth the trouble this thing runs so smooth better than any other I have used and it will continue to hold for a couple years cause of the power behind it. I wouldn't worry about the booting flashing like that I'm just thinking it does this to show it has been tampered with.

Hey man thanks for your reply. Reminded me to update this for anyone else who finds it.
So the new screen was definitely defective. The one time I managed to get it on there was a dead spot. I sent it back, a replacement is on its way.
Now the good news- I realized why my phone wouldn't boot. Turns out that when removing the motherboard, the top part of it got a little... bent. Nothing bad, nothing permanent, but when I mounted back onto the housing, the top part of it had a tendency to stick up a little bit. Well if you follow the small ribbon cable off the power button, it leads to two gold contacts. Sure enough on on the bottom side of the motherboard there are two nodes that would press against the contacts.
Basically, the power button wasn't even connected to the board.
So I actually put the whole thing together, screws and all, and with that, the motherboard sits snugly as it should and the button works fine.
Right now my phone is some sort of hacked up zombie, with a cracked up screen, an upper-left corner that's completely decimated/missing, and no adhesive to hold it together. Hopefully the screen makes it here soon!
Oh and I agree totally, this is the smoothest and most reliable Android I've owned, better than the Evo 3D (which I quite liked) and a GS3 (meh, it got very unreliable after a year). I'm happy the screen replacement is cheap and easy so I can keep this thing for at least another year.
Cool glad it worked out for you or hopefully will. Can you do me a solid once your screen comes in and if it replaced well all working that is could you post the site you got it on or pm me with it. I am here tons of issues with defective screens. Would like to have a reliable market to shop from.

I have never had a bad part for any kind of phone from Wholesale Gadget Parts in Bixby, OK (Tulsa area). I found them on Amazon and originally ordered because they were close and I was in a hurry. I kept ordering because they get it right. I have about a 50/50 success rate with phone parts off other sellers on Amazon. If you buy cheap, expect a high failure rate.
Glass and digitizer for G Pro is about $18 before shipping and any applicable tax.
