How to Determine The Wear and Use of a Used LG G3 - G3 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I need to buy a used LG G3 D851 off eBay. I'm trying to determine if there is a way to find out the wear & usage on the G3. Looking at the physical condition of the phone isn't useful (cases & screen protectors protect against wear & tear). After buying (and returning) two broken G3s I've learned that "refurbished" means "we cleaned it with a towel", and that "new" means "a used phone in the original box".
As I understand it the only thing on any mobile phone that really wears is the camera which degrades over time. I thought that there was a hidden menu option that had an entry on how many photos were taken, which would help, but I can't find it.
I was hoping there would be a hidden menu timer or counter somewhere that can tell me how often the phone has been used?
Any hints or suggestions would be greatly appreciated! :good:

I have had close to a dozen LG G3s over the last 4 years. I have been trying to find a decent D855, but run into D850s , 851s, LS990s and VS985 for parts.
The biggest problem with these is the poor manufacturing of the components on the motherboard. The phones are dirt simple to take apart and swap parts on, and, by now, you should assume that the phone you are about to buy is not what you think it is.
Like George Washington's axe. Someone swapped the handle, then someone swapped the blade...
If you trust the seller to be honest, get a used one that has had little use and ask the seller if it bootloops, has wifi issues, bluescreen, fadeout...these are all motherboard problems.

Thanks @rs899 that's the problem I've had. In one case I bought what was supposed to be a D851 but it was a screen-locked LS999. Another one had WiFi that didn't work. In every case the phones were advertised as refurbished and "passed our extensive in-house diagnostics".
In every situation I had to file a complaint with eBay to get a refund as the seller was not cooperative.

At this point in the phone's life, it is unreasonable to spend much on these. I myself put a couple of phones together out of parts , used them a few days, and sold them as "used" on ebay fairly cheaply. If anyone complains in 30 days I will have them ship it back and refund them (or just simply refund them). The motherboards are a time bomb. The MBs in the ones I sold may not have been used much and may last for some period of time...or not.
I have a D-851 that I thought was pretty reliable. It has started to forget my wifi. The end may be near for that one.

@rs899 thanks for the info. BTW I have long fingers, and the back buttons on the LG G3 are perfect for me (I looked at the G4 but it is famously unreliable even when new & too big for my needs).
My daily driver is a rooted LG G3 running stock KitKat. I'd like to upgrade to a Marshmallow ROM but I'm nervous about losing functionality on the phone if the upgrade goes bad. So my plan is buy another LG G3 D851 and do the upgrade on that, then transfer my nandroid backup & microSD card to the new one. Maybe I'll give it one more shot on eBay & see if it works out. If you have a d851 for sale DM me your eBay ID & I'll check it out!

I don't have anything for sale right now. I have a D-850 I am playing with and figured out how to put Lineage 17.1 on, but now it drops wifi. I have that D851, but I don't trust it either. A very bad D855. Nothing I would either use or sell to my worst enemy...

You wrote that you replace parts on these G3 phones. Do you know if the ear speaker on the front of the phone loses clarity over time? I'm wondering if I should go through the trouble to replace mine. Thanks

[Q] Backlight dead?

Hi,
I just get a e-980.
With no special reason, the screen stop working, I realized under the sunlight, that my LCD still working, but I have no more backlight.
I can barely see white color shapes.
Is it a ''normal'' issue with those phones?
- I've opened it, clean contacts from ribbon cables. - didn't work
- I've done a complete stock reflash with LgFlashTool - didn't work
If you guys have no clue, I'm scared that I'm dealing with a brick, and get back my old reliable desireZ
thank you
Guess first thing to do in such a situation is to check if there is some obvious glitch- maybe brightness turned down to zero, phone not waking up die to some mod etc.. If does not work, then next is factory reset.. Next is a tot flash and then visit to the service center

yep. All done.
Like I said, I can receive calls/txt. I ear the unlock sound, etc. I can see LCD ON under bright sunlight.
Right now, I'm just thinking to throw it in the garbage, a 250$us phone that worked 2 days !!! Wow, people told me to never touch LG, I start to believe them.
Maybe some body here can sell me a functional LCD with broken digitizer??, mine is brand new.
I just dont want to dump more money in it, since the HTC is working strong, even for a 4 yo device
I'll try with LG warranty service, but it was a final sale
Exactly same issue with me too
I bought my LG OPTIMUS G PRO a few days back refurbished, it worked flawlessly for around a week. A few days ago its screen went blank even though it was possible to use screen blank like answering calls etc, i thought humidity has affected it and buried it in rice for one day and it worked again but after 2 days it again went blank and this time burying it didn't help. I am without luck now and looking for some workaround. Please someone help us if anyone knows how to fix it?
Awaiting eagerly for some suggestions.:crying:
Mmm seem to be a LG problem...
Event on optimus G forums people seems to have this trouble.
You just remind me something, went the screen go off, it was 90% rel humidity here, good point.
I tried to put it under high heat and the freezer. no luck.
All I want to know it's if it's the main board problem or screen.
Last time with LG pos, my brother had the LG 3D, wow, pos as well, nexus aren't the best phone as well.
HTC ftw, but the latest models are so no-user friendly on the hardware, seems like they try to copy apple.
My moto milestone 500mhz (2009) still working better than this, lol.
If you don't have a warranty, I'd open it up then clean and reseat the screen dongle connector.
This happened to my optimus g. Suddenly the screen went dark. I opened it up reseated everything and it didn't help. Thinking of buying a mee lcd when I find one cheap enough

yeah, but how you'll be sure that problem wont came back in a year?
The last time I heard about backlight stop working/burn, it was on compaq laptop with pentiumII processor.
1 1/2 year old phone, that's not normal.
any way, I put the phone in a bag of rice for the night, powered up, and the back light came on for 3 seconds.
-- 5 days and still have NO supports from LG.
This is just a thought. I had something similar happen in one of two ways, either the screen turning all red or dark. It was an issue with a night reading program, Twilight. After I managed to turn that off the problem went away.
If you have programs like Lux or Twilight running or anything that can control the screen try and turn them off.
Update.
I didn't touch the phone for days, leaving the battery out. Then I put it back just to be ready to retry a clean flash.
Screen all black.
I had something to do, I leave it on my desk for few hours, and when I came back to play with it, the screen light up. It's been a day , no issue, but some times the screen flicker.
It will probably let me down soon.
Strange issue : the home button led light doesn't work anymore.
Is it because I flashed the telcel stock rom on the e980 at&t?

They just don't care, the moment I said that I bought this phone to the US and use it on a Canada carrier (Rogers / At&T , dont need to unlock the phone! ) , they flush me .
WTF???????????
Seriously people, don't deal with them.
So far, what I learn is that more this device is getting old ( wtf? a year or so isn't old) they have observed this issue.
Be careful pals, don't over use it
IF you buy a LG product, do not expect customer support. My e980 had a failed battery at 10months, LG basically told me to go screw my self. (Wanted me to pay to ship the phone, which would cost more then a new battery, and why do they need the phone when the battery is faulty, i gave up, bought myself a new battery, and have been good since. ) other then that, i like their hardware, ive had a G2X and now the G pro.

I see a lot of people try to blame manufacturer for the issues of their phone. LG, HTC, Samsung, Apple.
Remember, they all offer one year warranty. So if your phone is still under warranty, go RMA. I already got two HTC and one Samsung exchanged.
If your phone is not under warranty, did you buy it used ? Then you should blame the previous owner or yourself. Why did this happen to your phone ONLY while ten's of thousands of users here are fine?Did you do something that may cause the issue?
This is not personal. I just try to say something fair when I see people said "Never touch LG/Samsung/HTC.."
It won't help your phone come back. And it did mislead other users

It doesn't sound like they told you to "go screw yourself" exactly. It actually makes quite a bit of sense that a manufacturer would want all of a faulty device to arrive rather than that their customer just send them the parts they assessed as faulty. If they had to send you a new device, they would probably want the old one intact.

I called LG to exchange my Nexus 4 earlier this year. I call only once and they give me a shipping address( HTC also give address when I called ), asking to ship within 10 days or so .
They did NOT ask the carrier of my Nexus 4.( T-Mobile if you want to know ). They just check Imei and verified that the phone was under warranty.
I did not send the phone back to LG in the end. Someone bought it from me. The Nexus 4 has light yellow tint on display but hardly noticeable. The buyer don't care..
My point is, OP, I guess you did not told us that your phone might not be under warranty

Asking you to shipping back to factory is Exactly what is called customer service.
All manufacturers do so!
They need to run full software and hardware check on your device, making sure that all parts are working when they return the phone to you.
You might care a few bucks shipping cost . But truth is that maybe battery was not just the faulty part. Something else MIGHT go wrong as well. They need to find out once you call in for RMA.
It is YOU don't know what customer service is, Not them.

Stay on G4 or move to OnePlus 3?

Guys, how do you think?
I have my G4 (S/N 512), camera is perfect, CPU is good, screen is excellent.
I don't care about updates, but I love Cyanogenmod, clean Android etc. I want to mod my phone, personalize it in every way I can. Unfortunelly I can't with locked bootloader. I could just unlock it, but I'm aware of bootloop. When it'll happen my phone will be just paper clip. So I'm thinking. The OP3 is near. OnePlus got great terms of guarantee. But still, I'm kinda in love with G4. I jumped from SGS3 to it. So it was my designed phone.
Anyway, what do you think? Will my phone brick? Move to OP3?
Stay until you get the bootloop (as you expect). It is kinda risk now to jump over to OP3. I know the rumoured specs are good but you wont loose by waiting a bit for some few reviews
lol op?Support epic joke.
Which serial number is your phone? I have a 510 device and i believe those are safe from the bootloop issue because those have the v1.1 motherboard. I unlocked the bootloader on mine because of this and it has been quite nice with CyanogenMod 13. However, like yourself i'm debating whether to upgrade the phone later this year. I don't 'hate' the G4, in fact it's a nice phone with a fantastic camera, screen and good performance. But there's something about it that i don't like, i bet this sounds stupid but it's just such a boring phone, honestly. Before this i had the OnePlus One and that felt like something genuinely special, and i kinda wish i'd stuck with that instead of buying the G4.
I doubt i'll go back to another OnePlus device because of their shocking customer service, if you end up with a bad device then it seems like you're gonna be ****ed for a few months. There was one person on Reddit who sent his phone back in February and still hasn't received it as of yesterday, like what the hell is that about. I'm going to wait and see what the new Nexus devices are like in about three months, i think that's the way forward for me because it would be nice to have a device which receives updates quicker than anything else, and always stays on top with the vast developmental community behind it. Only problem with those is the price and lack of a memory card slot, but we'll have to see what happens, maybe the prices will be a little more affordable this time to compete with the OP3 and similar devices.
What about Moto Z Force, if it's not only for US market? Depends on the price of course.
I just upgraded from my G3 to a factory refurb G4 and so far I really like it all except for the issue where you cannot wake up the phone by double tapping the screen like 99% of the time. There's supposed to be a way to upgrade the lg keyboard app unless you are, like myself, on Verizon in which case they so graciously removed all the useful settings menu items such as app upgrades, etc...

i have 601 how do i know what MB version i have?
If you want to hear my opinion for new phones:
Wait 1/2 to 1 year. Why?
• You know, if the phone will get its love by devs.
• It's also much cheaper.
• Many little hardware-bugs will probably be fixed.
3 good reasons to wait. New != better. Sad new world, I know. Except it's a Nexus: Same price until new one is released, same hardware - but devs will love it .

There should be a sticker on the inside of the box which states the serial number and has the motherboard version at the end in closed brackets. But as your phone is 601, it will have the updated motherboard and so you're safe from the bootloop problems.

Considering OP3 already has a CM13 build going and kernel sources out, I'd honestly get rid of the G4 while its still worth something. I would've done the same thing if it weren't for the fact my piece of garbage G4 decided to bootloop literally days before the OP3 release.

My double tap to wake used to work great. Then I got bootloop issue, had phone repaired from LG, and double tap to wake basically NEVER works. Not sure if it'd be worth a FDR or what.

Mine bootlooped friday and I'm going to get the OP3 in the next few days. I'm trying to get my G4 repaired, if LG dont do it then I'll use my insurance to have it replaced. I plan on using the time I have without it to see how I lkthe OP3. If I like it, I'll sell the G4, if not, I'll sell the OP3.
I've read a lot of bad things about OP3's support, but in trying to get my G4 repaired, it can't be much worse than LG's (edit: since I made this comment, I've been on LG Chat on their website with a really helpful guy called Carl who's said my phone is covered with a 2 year warranty and they will fix it - much better than the cookie cutter email response team).
No removable battery on the OP3. They claim to charge their phone to 100% in 45 minutes. The G4 can be at 100% in about 3 minutes from shutoff to reboot with a fresh battery installed. I love my G4.
I loved my G4 till it stopped working and LG refuse to fix it because rooting voids the warranty.

This statement is false and very dangerous for users. All smartphones, even with S/N starting with 60x are prone to bootloop problem. I have my LG G4 with v1.1 motherboard, S/N 602 and guess what happened to it...

Well, that's news to me. When i bought my G4 in December the bootloop problem had already become widely known, and i did extensive research into it on XDA and other websites, but at the time all 510 and 511 devices were deemed to be completely safe. If those devices were affected by the bootloop problem then i wouldn't have even considered buying it.

LOL, there are even cases of the new G5 bootlooping. LG has become such a joke. And it's a shame because the G4 would've been a perfect phone if they had caught the bootlooping and image retention issues while testing it.

Thinking Of Buying A G4. Two Questions!

Hey all
As the title states I'm thinking of moving on up to a G4 from a Nexus 5 (5X specs are terribly underwhelming to me, haha) and I'm this close to giving in and buying a used H818P in pristine condition. Just a couple questions
1. How prevalent exactly IS the bootloop/stuck at bootlogo issue? Is there a way I can reliably avoid it (serial numbers? undervolting?) and is there an established fix that can take me back from the brink if it happens? Searching XDA and Google has me very nervous with the ambiguity
2. Are there stock AOSP images/flashable zips for H818P? I don't really go for fancy feature-heavy ROMS.
Help a guy out, haha. An expensive paperweight is the last thing I need! Thanks!

right now i dont see manny bootloops like before but i say as long as you get a 6xx serial chances are very low. there hasnt been anymore massive reports of bootloops. so make sure you have a phone that in any way you can claim warranty.
only tmobile h811 and some european h815- you need to see wich ones can have bootloader unlocked rest is stock rom. maybe only root. in the case that you are in LP.
Ah this is something I didn't know, haha. No AOSP is obviously a deal breaker for me. Off to search for a 6xx serial H815 on eBay, or just stick w my trusty N5 until a good flagship comes round
Thanks fellows!
I wouldn't recommend it. My first H815 G4 (S/N 506) bootlooped, after that I got a replacement (bricked phone got stolen while on its way to repairs) with a 512 serial number.
Although anything higher than 510 was said to be "safe", just yesterday evening that replacement H815 G4 bootlooped, as well.
So from my personal experience there don't seem to be "safe serial numbers" and I'd definitely not buy a used phone (as that will probably have only a very short warranty or even none at all).

Well for all I've been able to gather - and I was made to read up by my own SN508.. one dying on me - teh internets will make you thing all '15-manufactured (SN5xx) G4's will bootloop sooner or later, the reported expectancy being a year and a day ))) (No kidding here, mine died a year and 2 month, and I wasn't running much of core-heating stuff like games or bloody arsebook app)
The avalanche of reports seem to cut off around SN603, give or take, tho
a) there's a vague talk about refurbs with SN6xx being basically old bootloopers factory-baked
b) have to keep in mind that with the average life expectancy of "a year and a day" there are TWO possible reasons for lack of '16-year bootloop reports:
- LG fixed it
- It's the same ****, only it's time didn't come yet.
I can't help but admit it is an amazing phone while it works. Not to mention the only one of recent flagships (barring g5 of the same) with both replaceable battery and a SD card - a trend I so wanted to support with my buck.
With all the knowledge and experience I have now I'd say this: new one, SN610+, at a bargain price AND with warranty - a buy. Else - skip.

G5 Worth the upgrade??

Hey everyone!,
Im thinking of moving up to a G5 within the next month or 2 because the G3 has caused me way to many problems for me.
Let me list out what faults I have found with my G3
_____________________________________________________________________________
- Wifi going off even when im near the router or probably a room or 2 away from it.
- Random bootloops
- Earphone jack problems <-- There are solutions out there but they haven't fixed it at all for me.
- Editing the Build.Prop on the headphones section but that didn't work either. (Back buttons stopped working lol)
_____________________________________________________________________________
These problems that im having to deal with everyday especially with the earphone jack problem when i'm at the gym It will constantly skip tracks, pauses tracks and opens google voice search. I even went to a phone repair shop and they can't fix it and told me to tell the manufacture to get a replacement even though i don't have no warranty on this device.
It's kinda getting to a point where I just don't want nothing to do with the phone anymore. I even went onto another rom to fix the problem but that doesn't do nothing at all.
So. What do you guys think G5 or Another phone?

I don't think its worth the upgrade. I was able to fix the earphone jack problems by going into the Google app and disabling things.
I get random bootlooop when I overuse the phone and its at low charge( when it overheats and is at 15% or less battery)
I have literally disabled everything that triggers the voice search but yet still it changes music and pauses music all the time. I'm not too sure yet. Thanks for the tip though
sounds like your g3 is dying
just replace it, or get a g4. you shouldn't have those types of issues you discuss. they seem hardware related.
I have both G3 and G5 and to be honest, it the G5 isn't a great phone imo. The g3 runs better for me and the G5 I have had issues with the camera (telephoto one). The fingerprint sensor 9/10 times doesn't register correctly. It isn't worth upgrading to imo. The G5 made me realize that LG isn't a brand I'll consider for phones in the future, unless their quality goes way up. Go with OnePlus 3T, or wait for OnePlus 4 to come (here soon). Quality phones on the cheap with good community developer support.
As per the headphone issues, you can buy the headphone jack piece online. It's super easy to replace and the part is cheap. I wouldn't give up on your G3, very easy to replace parts on this device.

Thats the only thing within the space of 7 months it has already started to break down on me. But I've bought the G4 now but what I'll do is try to repair the earphone jack and see what i could do with the wifi problem. The G4 is coming tomorrow (Wednesday) but if this phone goes the same way as the g3 I'll most likely not go with LG phones again, I mean don't get me wrong the phone and camera is just outstanding to me but there is too many problems especially with it's famous bootloop that hasn't been fixed by lg even they admitted its a hardware fault.

Yep! I managed to get a g4 now like i said before if this phone messes up on me (Touch wood it doesn't! aha) then I'll just go to another phone... and the earphone jack is easily replaceable so i may just get it repaired and see if i can get the wifi repaired there has to be a way to get it fixed.

G4 SEA Bootloop (Rooted, non-original battery) any options?

Whew boy has this been a troublesome phone. I purchased a new LG G4 off of Amazon January last year. It it had a warranty, it's long expired. I live in the US but mine is a SEA (Singapore) model H815. The serial number starts with 510, which I initially hoped meant it wouldn't bootloop, but it has become obvious even newer models still do it. Now mine has as well.
I tried the hairdryer trick but can't get it to stay on for more than a couple of minutes and bootloops again. Doesn't sound permanent anyways. Doesn't stay on long enough to do anything at all.
As expected, LG support has been no use. When I called (what I assume to be the US support line), they asked for the IMEI and immediately said it wasn't their problem due to the region and I would need to speak with the Amazon seller to get the contact for the right LG branch. I will try that if necessary, but I fully expect to not get anywhere.
To complicate matters, my G4 is rooted (I used the root injection method and still have a locked bootloader). Might make convincing LG to repair even more difficult, assuming I can get that far.
And on top of that, the original official LG battery that came with the phone was defective. It overheated and expanded, it pressed against the display, which now has extreme pink-purple tinted image retention. This fades but is ugly and annoying, though something I can live with (I found an app that seemed to help). I disposed of the original battery immediately (fire/explosion hazard) and replaced it with a TOTHL. Works great, but i'm concerned that it will be another roadblock in getting a repair.
So suffice to say, I have grievances and won't be using LG again (kind of missing my old first gen Galaxy S now). But it sucks to be stuck with an expensive paperweight and I am without a suitable replacement at the moment. Does anyone have any advice for how to approach this situation and possibly get it repaired? Or am I out of luck? I'm not sure whom to contact in this mess, and i'm also not sure if anything can be done given all the complicated factors (rooting, using a third party battery, display issues, it being an international SEA model etc). Any advice would be very appreciated.
