The seller claims he cannot trace it
Its a stolen Phone or registred as such
hold volume down + power to force shut down the phone and then quickly do the recovery key combo / download mode combo before it reboots
This does look like a stolen phone and should be returned.
One of the hazards of buying second hand phones etc.
If you bought it through somewhere like ebay then claim the money back. If you didn't then it's a case of buyer beware and need to chalk it up to "you live, and you learn"
Rule no. 1 dont trust e-bay for used electronics
Rule no. 2 dont buy used electronics without seeing with your eyes.
Been dealing with used phones for almost 5 years, never had any issue.

If i were you, i will request refund and return the phone to seller.
If you are past the return dates, i would pop in a simcard and keep the phone charged.
Then lodge a police report saying you got scammed buyingthis suspected stolen phone.
When the original phone owner come knocking on your door, you have the police report with your intentions stated to protect you from legal liability, and just return the phone to the owner.
Or.. still the phone for parts

no solution
hello everyone, today ebay stepped in and said i can no longer get my refund because its more than 30 days since i opened the return case,
since this phone is stuck with me, i know the screen can cover some of my losses, but i really want to know if there is another solution to this
thank you
As already stated, this is most likely a stolen phone that's been resold. Next step would be a police report and making sure it finds its way back to the rightful owner (or simply just handing it over to the authorities).
Keeping it and/or selling it for parts when knowing it is most likely stolen is morally ambiguous and in many parts of the world likely illegal.
This thread has run it's course, so I'm closing it now.

I recently purchased a Samsung Galaxy S II T989 off of craigslist. It was described as Brand New, and came with box and all original accessories, etc. Still had screen protectors and everything on it, so i assumed i would have no problems. I am using AT&T and wanting to unlock it so that i wouldn't have to switch carriers. I paid a pretty reputable website 25$ for the unlock code, which i received and entered as directed.
I attempted to enter my SIM and i get an invalid SIM message. I called Samsung to figure it out and they had me send them the phone. They received it and inspected it to ensure nothing was wrong. They then tested the IMEI which came back as a black-listed phone, but would not disclose the reason.
So t-mobile will offer me no help what so ever, nor will samsung. I try calling the *#7465625# number to test if the phone is unlocked, but i get an error message stating "The process com.android.phone has stopped unexpectedly" and i have only one option which is force quit. I used the factory reset option a couple times to see if this helped at all, and got nothing.
I only have experience with iphones, so i really know nothing about the android OS. I've heard a lot about "rooting" and such for the unlock but it's like a whole different language for me. If anyone could help it would be greatly appreciated. This phone has just been sitting in my drawer for the past month because i have absolutely no idea what to do.
Sounds to me like you may have bought a phone that someone perhaps filled an insurance claim on. I know I had a phone taken once and filed a claim on it and got a new one, eventually got the old one back and when a friend took it in it was taken on the spot. This may or may not be the case.
Yup sounds like someone bought a phone, Reported it lost,Kept the replacement, and sold you the stolen one. The same thing happened to me about a year ago with a HTC G2 from craigslist. You could try rooting (really not as scary as it seems) putting a new ROM then try to unlock again

That is what i'm assuming the case is. I've heard of friends and such running into the problem, but never thought i would fall victim to it.
Do you know where i might be able to find a rooting guide for a complete noob like myself? Step by step in depth kind of stuff? Would the fact that the phone is blacklisted cause me to get the error i'm getting whenever i try to test the unlock? Is it possible to unlock the phone for another GSM carrier even though it is blacklisted with t-mobile.
Explore all the options of getting your money back. If no good, you can always try to get someone to chqnge the imei for you, beware tho, its same illegal as changing vin plate on a car. Theoretically noone will help you, but practically, there are plenty shops selling nintendo cardridges with 100 original games in one...

You cannot ask on here how to fix this problem. It is against the rules, and illegal. This thread will be closed.. Just saying.
Ebay it with bad efs in the title, sell for parts, will probably get a coupe hundred for it. Don't buy a phone off frauds list unless you meet them at the retail store and have the number ran. At least then if they report it stolen you have some record of the transaction and may be able to get it UN black listed. Crappy situation that is for sure.

As stated, the course of action you were proposing is illegal and therefore discussing it on the forum will not be tolerated.

So there I was, riding a bicycle at work and like a badass that I am,I decided to go hands free. Well, some mysterious force decided that idea wasn't going to work out today and down I went. Got a few scrapes and bruises, nothing major but my phone.....oh dear. Like any loyal phone, it took a hit for me and in exchange it gained nothing more than "thank you" and a completely broken display. (I'll post some pictures tonight when I get off work). Anyhoo, I turn to you guys as to what I should do from here. I have a few ideas but not entirely sure which would be the cheaper/faster solution:
1) I am with T-Mobile and my headset insurance transfered over to my GN. I could send it in for repair which I'm not entirely sure T-Mo will honor my phone and pay a deductible. I imagine its somewhere around $150
2) Purchase a $180.00 display from Amazon and repair it myself.
3) Report the phone as lost (not sure how well that will work)
Thats all I have in mind as of now. Please guys, need some desperate advice. Cannot go without my GN :crying:
I would try to go the insurance way first and if you don't like what they say about it, they'll probably give you an estimate or something, go to option #2
Option #3 is actually insurance fraud and I would be careful to even post about it...
I'll give them a call later and get an estimate. My only hope is that it wont be too much. As far as the lost claim, thanks for that info. That was actually a suggestion from a co-worker didnt know how it would even work out.
How about a sale price. I could sell it on eBay and buy a brand spankin' new GN. The phone boots and everything, its just the display thats completely gone. You reckon I could geet ~$100 for parts only?

I doubt you will be able to earn much from a broken Gnex on ebay. Best bet would be that you "lose it" you know like, riding the bike and it slip from you. If you want to go legal, check how much it would cost you to send it to their repair center. Usually it's around 150$ (that's exactly how much it costed to me last time i broke my phone), but it might change depending on your carrier, why it's broke, etc. I would say that you try to change the screen yourself on a last chance hit. Pretty complicated and if you have broken connector in phone, you will pay for nothing.
Wouldn't reporting it as lost be insurance fraud or something? Don't do that
So turns out Asurion doesn't cover it. After being told by T-Mo initially when I first got it that It WOULD be covered, I now get a no. Paying Premium Headset Protection for nothing, magnificent. My only options right now are to sell it for parts, I find ~$100 a semi-reasonable price seeing as how the display is only $150 ish.....250 for a fixed GN is not bad. I would then be purchasing a brand new GN...
For the curious:

I'm posting an update with the intent of helping others who may run into my situation, where the insurance company doesn't directly cover the GN.
So after going through days of complications with Asurion, much more than I typically care for, ( 3 Claims, multiple faxes due to them "not receiving them" and a week and a half of calling them every day) I finally managed to get them to somewhat cover the loss. Since the beginning they could not find the GT-i9250 model anywhere on their list of covered devices and they always insisted on the Nexus S, which is worth considerably less than the GN. I had to get in contact with a claims adjustor which could only give me a phone comparable which is completely understandable. They gave me the option between HTC Amaze 4G and the Samsung SGSII STANDARD (Whatever that means?). I ended up going for the GSII which I will be selling to buy another GN. I just miss my GN that much
Would the SGSII STANDARD be the i9100? Because the image they showed me did not look anything like the T989 (T-Mo SGSII).
Hey guys,
So I recently bought what I thought was a new unlocked HTC One M9 off eBay and while it most certainly is new, it's definitely not unlocked. At least I cannot get it to register on my service provider's network.
What I received is a US AT&T model and while it sees all the different GSM service providers when I search for network operators it won't actually connect to the one that I have a SIM card for.
I've managed to flash ARHD and I've even S-Offed using the premium sunshine method but it still won't connect. What else can I try, would flashing a different radio make a difference?
So what "exactly" does it say when you put your sim in and try to register on the carrier network?.
I wish I stole my HTC M9.
Does it have the proper APN loaded for the service provider you are trying to connect to?
Who is your carrier, and how are you trying to activate the phone *22890? You may need to find and then manualy change your prl.

It does have the APN settings loaded but it's not an APN issue; the phone won't actually register with my service provider's network. Initially before I loaded ARHD I received the following error message phone not allowed mm#6.
"Not allowed on network" means "stolen device". It will be blacklisted on ceir.
The person on ebay robbed you.
i wish i stole my HTC M9" is my signature. The fact you picked up on that says to me that you know your device has been reported stolen and blocked by its carrier.
This practice is becoming more and more common. The seller sells the device at a cheaper rate and the buyer seemingly gets a bargain however, once the phone is received by the buyer as working the seller reports the device as stolen and claims on his insurance policy for another device. Rinse and repeat. Large scale, undetectable insurance fraud!.
The requirement for reporting the device as stolen is just a police report/statement and a crime reference number. It is too easy to lie to the police!.
The buyer then assumes it has developed a fault because it used to work but funny enough, 2 weeks in, the device wont connect to any network and no-one has a clue what is wrong with it because it costs to access ceir, which no-one is willing to pay for.
When you get this = "not allowed on network" it means "your device has been reported stolen".

I thought you had typed that intentionally and were being sarcastic, implying that I had stolen this phone. I didn't realise signatures are shown as part of the post and not after an underline.

If it was me I'd report it to ebay and the police.

Report it, not just to the cops and ebay, but also to paypal if that was used and to the phone company. The phone is still possibly salvagable with a little work, but i dont think we can discuss that on here.
Hi Folks I hope you can help me with a problem I'm having.
Five days ago I took my mate 20x (international version) off its charger(original) and noticed that it had turned off while charging. I tried to turn on the phone but nothing....
I charged it once again with another cable, another plug and repeated this 5 times with different cables and adapters. Then I held "power" and volume "down" to reset it, but that didn't work either.
Next up I connected it to two computers but no signs of life, I left it connected to my computer (win 10) for two days and later noticed sound that it connected to my computer. It evens softly vibrates when I turn it on and off. The screen however stays black and even though hisuite reacts, it says "not connected" .
Now and then the huawei logo appears but it's stuck on it, no configuration of button pushing wakes it out of it, except the power button which kills it again.
I bought my device in the UK, so Huawei Japan won't service it, or even look at it.
Do you think this problem can be solved by replacing the battery, or the symptoms a case of something worse?
Hisuite enters recovery mode but when I click recover it says "your device is not supported for recovery.
I am out of my wits....:crying:
Thanks in advance,
Serge

Huawei UK has two year warranty, it might be a defective mother board .
Which supplier did you purchase it from in the UK?

Thanks for the quick response, I bought the phone on ebay, it was used. It was fine for 5 months so I don't think the seller sold it to me in bad faith. I don't know however where he bought it, and Huawei UK doesn't have the mate 20x in their line up.....
Try to go to recovery mode if possible and factory reset the phone..

Thanks tried that...nothing.
I guess it's really bad luck and I'm probably out of 600 euros... I haven't read of other people with this problem so I guess I just got a lemon and order a new one somewhere. I really like this device.
If its warranty left just contact huawei and send it to them for service.

Chatted with huawei, here you go:
I see. Indeed, the warranty will be regions specific in most of the cases so that might represent an issue in regards to fixing it there, but something should still be sorted out with the service center. The warranty will apply, no matter where the customer is living, but it's more a matter of sending the device to the service.
Yes, indeed. He needs to contact the service center either here: 0123 361 9320 or here https://sbeglobalservice.com/contact/
Thank you so much for going through all the trouble, now I have to figure out if there's still some warranty left. If there's not then this is going to be a costly thing...

Bought the phone from someone on Offerup and the deal was too good to pass up...long story short the phone cannot uninstall or exit from retail mode and I wanted to know if there was a way to remove the retail mode / mdm account associated with it. The account cannot be removed by normal means and I have tried watching some youtube videos - default passwords did not work. I do know it is an AT&T phone from the way it boots.
Just a guess, but it may have been a stolen Demo unit. If so, my only guess to fix the issue is by manually flashing a fresh copy of the firmware through ODIN. There are plenty of tutorials online on how to do this. Just a heads up, I wouldn't be surprised if it may be tracked and or blacklisted if it were stolen.
**** thanks for the heads up. thank you for pointing me in the right direction.
I would try a factory reset first

If this is a stolen device it is a crime to buy and keep stolen devices. I suggest you to give phone to local law enforcement and they can check for any registered match of stolen phones. If it turns out within a few weeks that the device is reported stolen then they will either send it back to store where it belongs or keep it as evidence. But if they find nothing, then they will contact you back and tell you to come and pick it up again. Which means you can keep it and then you may do reflash methods.
By doing this you have low chance for law enforcement to arrest you and think you stole it. Don't forget to tell them you bought it from a person through offerup and you noticed device is stuck in retailer mode. Which you suspect it might be a stolen demo device from AT&T store or something. So they won't think you stole it.

Solid ADULT and logical advice. THIS is the ONLY way to live your life. Good luck.
I thought retail demo units were missing hardware like the radios for signal?
why put it in if it has no intention of being used?
I could be wrong.
I would return it for a full refund if possible.
If purchased with a MC or Visa contact the bank to try to do a charge back to the vendor.
The bank requires the device be returned however advise them it appears to be stolen.
You may also want to file a complaint with your state attorney general's office.

They are full functioning devices but software locks them into retail mode to deter employees and others from stealing them.
Retail mode cannot be easily removed without the retailers passcode. There are some universal passcodes online you can try but most of them do not work anymore.

Greetings to all. While I appreciate all members contributing to this thread, this is indeed something that we do not condone as per XDA Rule #9:
9. Don't get us into trouble.
Don't post copyrighted materials or do other things which will obviously lead to legal trouble. If you wouldn't do it on your own homepage, you probably shouldn't do it here either. This does not mean that we agree with everything that the software piracy lobby try to impose on us. It simply means that you cannot break any laws here, since we'll end up dealing with the legal hassle caused by you. Please use common sense: respect the forum, its users and those that write great code.
