No such luck. You're most likely seeing 5Ge (with a little 'e' at the end), which is just a marketing gimmick for slightly improved 4G LTE. For example, see https://9to5google.com/2020/05/20/att-5ge-android-icon/.
You won't have real 5G unless you have a get a real (and undoubtedly) expensive 5G phone plan from AT&T.

Thanks for your reply, I am fully aware if the 5G evolution gimmick but this shows 5G with no “e” as you can see in the pictures and I do pay for the 5G plan with AT&T...So I was very surprised to see it on an unlocked phone ...crazy stuff

Your device at least see UpperLayerIndicator from network so that will activate 5G icon. CellMapper App is very good app to show if your phone connected to 5G really or not.
But maybe you just see 5G icon without having 5G-connection. From modem log could check if your device support really AT&T 5G-network: https://mt-tech.fi/en/how-to-get-4g...ons-from-your-android-phone/#Qualcomm_devices

Wow, love the Cell Mapper app. Am I correct that when you are on the Map setting it shows which direction and area is covered by each cell tower? Example: 2 towers next to each other but one is shaded to the west/northwest and the other is to the East/Northeast ...
And I love how it shows which Bands are supported by each Cell Site ...
Very cool app thanks for suggesting!!

Flashing from 4g+ to lte

Is it just a bug that when the phone accesses data it constantly flaahes real quick from 4g+ to lte?
I'm on att and next gen phone apn.

Maybe it is some kind of a bug, as I'm seeing that also and I'm on T-Mobile. I do have the option for VoLTE enabled, next time I see it doing this I'll try disabling that.

Check out my thread. I have a similar issue. I believe it's a radio or software problem that should be able easy fix.

ha glad i am not the only one!!!
I'm in France, and I have the same problem with 4G+ and LTE..
I hope it will be fixed in OOS 3.1.4

I'm having the issue here. Determined it only flashes to 4G+ when there is active data downloading. Otherwise it sits at LTE. US/AT&T here. Was considering going to T-Mobile to put a SIM in the 2nd tray and see if it does it there too, because I was thinking it was just an APN setting.
An easy way to tell is open YouTube and playback a video off of cellular..indicator will stick on 4G+. Alternatively, run a Speed Test, when downloading it will flash back and forth rapidly, however when doing the upload test it will stay on LTE.
I always thought 4G+ was the same as HSDPA+/HSUPA+ which is nowhere near as fast as LTE. Does anyone having the issue have a recent LTE phone they can swap back into and copmare speed tests?
Edit - typos.

4G is LTE. Not sure what 4G+ is. On LTE when it works I can get around 100 down.
Hmm, no 4G and LTE are different, in the US at least. 4G was marketed before LTE came about, you can see proof of this on an iPhone 4S, which did not have LTE radios but did label HSDPA+ connections as 4G. So you can thank Apple for the marketing confusion. However, upon researching this issue it seems 4G+ (with the plus, not just 4G) is the technical equivalent to LTE. It is just used in different countries, such as Singapore.
Regardless, the issue seems to have gone away after coming to work and being in different AT&T towers. I'm guessing it was just a graphical bug.
In Europe 4g and Lte is the same but the 4g+ is the new faster net

Pretty certain the one plus when using carrier aggregation shows the 4G+ and 4g when on HSDPA. Confusing for certain but when I've noticed it that's been the case (as much as I can tell without field test)

Basically combining two frequencies that use LTE for better bandwidth on the download speed as its currently mostly implemented.

Well, in Nottingham(uk) my phone works in the opposite way(EE network) it shows LTE constantly, but as soon as I start to download anything, or browsing (and possibly using more data) it switches to 4G+.I haven't realized untill I got my OP3... But love it, extremely fast ?

Yes that's exactly what mine is doing, however today it does it sometimes and other times it remains showing LTE when downloading data. I noticed when it remains as LTE, the up/down indicators in the pull-down settings don't show up, which leads me to believe even more that the LTE/4G+ toggling is just a visual bug, as they are technically the same network connection.
I took contact with the Oneplus support about this problem. They told me to send them a log with a hidden menu ( call the *#800#). He sent the log to the development team, I will tell you if I have news

I assume that would explain these less than stellar speeds? I was wondering why the upload was faster than the download...

Can confirm carrier aggregation. Started data transfer and the phone information shows a change from LTE to 4G+ and the network type line changes from LTE to LTE_CA. T-Mobile US as well.

S9 plus 5G capabilities

Does the Samsung Galaxy S9 Plus have 5G capabilities built in it or does it need a software upgrade does anyone know thanks
Sent from my [device_name] using XDA-Developers Legacy app
No,
Galaxy S9(+) does not support 5G and will not support it because there is no hardware component built in.
Even the S10 will not support 5G but maybe there will be a seperate 5G version of the S10 later this year.
Regards
S9+ and 5g

Might want to look at that network type icon again closely.
It really says 5GE. And, the "E" is really small.
That's really 4G LTE-Advanced. Not true 5G.
Have you not been paying attention to the news the past 6 months about how AT&T is lying and faking out their customers with "5G-E" on all their recent (within the last year and a half) phones?
I get that 5G-E icon in a few really small areas in Baton Rouge, LA. Including right downtown where I work. It gets a whopping 25 Mbps... woo hoo. At my house, just 5 miles away to the east, I get 120-160 Mbps on regular 4G.
Moral of the story - 5G-E ain't all that AT&T wants us to think it is.

Question Straight Talk 5G on the fold 3

Is anyone using straight talk on the fold 3? I don't understand why 5G isn't an option under the mobile settings. Customer Service is worthless. 5G is definitely available in my area. Any ideas?
I only see the 4G icon. Could the 5G signal be weak, and the phone defaults to 4G?

if you go in the settings>mobile network>network mode I do not even have 5g listed. I should have 5g/lte/3g/2g as an option and I don't. No idea and getting help is a nightmare from the CSRs. My area according to the ATT map is covered in 5g. outside or inside I don't have any 5g option.
I do not see it either. Next week I will going to my carrier. I will ask then.
I have Straight Talk on the TMobile towers. It's worked fine with 5g since I booted it up.

Call tech support for your phone company and say you want them to do a line refresh. It's not you, it's them. But before you do that, enable Visual Voice Mail (or whatever app you have) and retrieve all your voice mails because the line refresh wipes them from their storage.
I had an S20 on Metro that had problems getting 5G in places that definitely had it. Then it got to where at home it would only stay on 5G for a short while. It got worse and worse to where it flat out wouldn't switch to 5G. I called support. Went through everything they could think of.
I spent $400 on another S20. SAME #^%##$^ THING! NO 5G!
I called support again and after telling them I'd bought another phone and it did just like the other one, that's when they mentioned the line refresh. Been working great ever since. And this S20 wasn't used by a 24/7 texter so it doesn't have the keyboard burned into the screen like the other one, which I just sold today for $350.

Hi Galane, unfortunately, its not that i have bad signal on 5G, its that i can't even select 5G in the mobile networks settings. the max i'm able to get is 4G even though the phone is a 5G phone.

Question 5G status bar icon lying

Is there a way to show the TRUE network type your connected to on the Pixel 6 Pro in the status bar? Mine almost always says 5G, but when I check with SignalCheck Lite, it's actually connected to LTE on AT&T bands B12, B66, etc. I've only ever seen it actually connected to 5G-NR once in SignalCheck. It's quite deceptive of Google to have the phone show your connected to 5G when your actually not.
I'm certain it's due to your carier not Google.

I believe your carrier controls how your mobile data is displayed. I'm on AT&T and in certain areas, I get "5G E" even though it's not really 5G at all. I'm just using that as an example.
5GE stands for '5G Evolution,' and it all started with AT&T. The US telecommunications company began promoting the term back in 2018 to separate itself from its competitors in the 5G race. AT&T claimed that with this upgrade, users could reach a network speed of 400 Mbps in areas with coverage.

it's not where you buy it per say. your sim is tied to a carrier and when inserted in your phone will download some carrier specific software. most carriers 'lie' about networks. AT&T for example calls their latest 4G LTE '5G' on device and in promotional ads. also keep in mind not all 5G is equivalent and all carries denote them somewhat differently.

Ironically Google is one of the only OEMS (that i know of) that displays a more accurate signal bar, other OEMs boost it.
